Process water is an important consideration in the development of a nickel laterite project. Depending on the location of the ore body, sufficient fresh water may not be available and it may be necessary to use seawater (or saline groundwater) for ore preparation. This introduces various species, which have major effects on materials of construction and leaching chemistry. This paper summarizes batch testwork completed at the Falconbridge Technology Center. The leaching behaviour of eleven different laterite ore samples were compared using seawater and fresh water. For brevity, six of the eleven samples are reported here-the other five samples showed similar results. Each ore type was leached under identical conditions in both freshwater and seawater and the leaching chemistry compared. The batch test results were confirmed in a continuous pilot plant, and leach kinetics for the two systems were compared. Keywords: high pressure acid leaching, laterites

This paper gives a brief description of VirtuoBlast technology ù a new, automated and highly interactive stereo vision technology which has been developed in CSIRO Exploration and Mining. VirtuoBlast technology is an integration of three advanced technologies - close-range digital terrestrial photogrammetry, oblique stereo imaging or high-speed stereo imaging, and temporal-spatial image matching technique. VirtuoBlast has been developed for the automated 3D measurement of blasting through rapid collection, processing, analysis and visualisation of 3D data related to blasting. A major field trial has been undertaken in August 1998 at the KCGM super pit. The field trial involved three applications of the technology, namely, pre-blast 3D surface mapping; post-blast 3D performance measurement; and temporal-spatial modelling of dynamic blasting process. This paper presents some results from this trial with emphasis on the application of VirtuoBlast technology to pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement. Application to the temporal-spatial 3D modelling of dynamic blasting process will be presented in a separate paper. Pre- and post-blast surface models derived using both VirtuoBlast technology and conventional field survey method are presented. The differences in results using the two mapping methods clearly show that the digital photogrammetric technique has many advantages over conventional survey methods. Results of pre- and post-blast from the field trial have demonstrated the potential of VirtuoBlast technology to efficiently perform pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement of production blasts. Demonstrated applications of VirtuoBlast technology to automated 3D measurement of blasting are showing an exciting future in advancing blasting science and modern blast design. The basic technologies are in place, however, continued improvements to the functionality, robustness and outputs are needed. The challenge is to build on the current state-of-the-art, by developing techniques and hardware which can be easily transferred to and implemented by the mining community. Current and future research and development will see improvements in imaging systems, automatic image processing and 3D data analysis.

The separation in gravity concentrators is based on the density difference between valuable and gangue minerals. In addition to density, many auxiliary parameters like particle size, shape, feed rate, pulp density etc. plays an important role in the separation. The performance efficiency of gravity units is largely based on the interference of such auxiliary parameters during separation. Many gravity concentrators are used for the beneficiation of cassiterite ores and performance of which are varying with different feed material, particle size and required enrichment from the unit. Selection of gravity units is generally based on laboratory testing and data collected from the previous experience. In the present investigation cassiterite ore collected from Uljin deposit, South Korea has been subjected to various gravity units like jig, spiral, and Knelson concentrator with the intension to pre-concentrate the ore. Second stage concentration was carried out using shaking tables. The article mainly summarizes performance evaluation methods employed for gravity concentrators. Selection of gravity circuit for the beneficiation of cassiterite was made on the basis of the recovery-grade curve, and Tromp curve methods. "The paper presents dimensionless design diagrams for estimating the stand-up time of a tunnel face in saturated ground of medium-low permeability. The diagrams cover a wide range of ground parameters and apply to shallow tunnels (overburden less than two diameters). As the time-dependency of the face stability in water-bearing ground is associated with the consolidation process in the soil ahead of the tunnel face, the stand-up time is determined by means of hydraulic-mechanical coupled spatial stress analyses. The results presented are important for tunnel engineering practice, e.g. when estimating the feasibility of atmospheric interventions in the working chamber of a closed shield. INTRODUCTION The response of water-bearing medium-low permeability ground to tunnel excavation is time dependent. The time-dependency is due to a transient seepage flow process that is triggered by the excavation and develops slowly over the course of time. Experience shows that the short-term behavior the ground is more favorable than the long-term one: the deformations increase with time; the tunnel face may be stable initially and fail only after some time. The time over which the tunnel face remains stable is called the stand-up time. This paper investigates the time dependency of the tunnel face stability assuming that all time effects are due to consolidation rather than creep. This assumption is reasonable for shallow tunnels crossing water-bearing soils. In the problem under analysis, the unsupported tunnel face remains stable under the undrained conditions prevailing after excavation, but collapses before reaching the drained conditions prevailing at a steady state. The assessment of the stand-up time is important from an economical point of view for both mechanized and conventional tunneling through weak water-bearing ground, as a long stand-up time removes the need for face support or ground improvement works during standstills, thus saving time and money, while short stand-up times require hyperbaric interventions or the implementation of costly and time-consuming auxiliary measures."

"The mechanical behavior and the fracture characteristics of composites with DGEBA/TETA epoxy matrix reinforced with up to 40% in volume of continuous and thinner ramie fibers were evaluated by tensile tests. Specimens with selected thin fibers aligned along the tensile axis were room temperature tested to rupture. The fracture surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed significant increase in both the ultimate tensile strength and the elastic modulus. The fracture analysis indicated the possible mechanism for the fiber/matrix interaction, which could be responsible for the composite performance.IntroductionThe fiber reinforced polymer composite emerged in the middle of last century as a versatile engineering material for applications requiring mechanical resistance in association with lightness. Its most commonly used example is ""fiberglass'', i.e., a thermoset polymer matrix composite reinforced with glass fiber. Indeed, ""fiberglass"" has a specific strength of the order of 500 MPa.cm3/g, which is the double of the strongest steels like the maraging. This motivated, at earlier times, ""fiberglass"" to replace many conventional materials including wood and natural fiber composites. Today, ""fiberglass"" has a wide range of uses from aerospace systems and appliances to sport and leisure components. However, its fabrication as well as those of any synthetic fiber such as carbon and aramid composites, requires a relatively large amount of energy. Presently, a growing concern exists regarding the consequences to the environmental by gases like C02 associated with both the energy consumption and the processing of synthetic fibers and their composites. These gases are well known responsible for global warming [1]."

The prevalent strategic approach in the mining industry is one of planning. However, it is widely recognised that planning does not work in complex and uncertain situations (Mintzberg, 1994), such as those associated with ‘above ground’ non-technical orebody complexity (Trench, Packey and Sykes, 2014). Mintzberg, Ahlstrand and Lampel (2009) suggest the focus instead should be on strategic ‘thinking and doing’ and using the many ways to think about strategy to make sense of complex, uncertain, and unique situations. They therefore place great value in cognitive flexibility. Scenarios development utilizes several different thinking styles and thus assists with this type of flexible strategic thinking (Figure 1). The ‘Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) Scenarios’ were developed with the ‘Oxford Scenario Planning Approach’ (OSPA) (Ramírez and Wilkinson, 2016). The OSPA aims more to improve the thinking skills of decision makers, rather than forecasting per se (Wack, 1985a, 1985b). As such, this paper focuses less on the content of the scenarios and instead on the practical value of scenarios in strategizing. One of the important technological challenges facing the iron ore industry in India is to find commercially viable technologies to process alumina rich iron ore fines and slimes. The key to solving this problem lies in developing selective reagents for the separation of iron oxide minerals from associated gangue minerals like quartz, gibbsite, kaolinite and montmorillonite. We present in this paper our successful results on the dispersion-flocculation of three different natural iron ore slime samples from mines in India using the reagent combination of PVP dispersant and corn starch flocculent. All the three samples contained hematite, goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite minerals as confirmed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effect of various process parameters such as pH, dosage of reagents, settling time and pulp density was studied. We were able to produce a concentrate assaying 66.2% Fe and <2% Al with a yield of 67.4% by weight (with a recovery of 77% of iron values) using PVP (1 ppm dosage) and corn starch (20 ppm) for one of the slime sample (Sample I) assaying 58.2% iron (Fe) and 3.8% aluminium (Al). The XRD analysis of settled and dispersed fractions revealed that alumina-containing minerals like clay and gibbsite mostly remain in the dispersed phase while iron-bearing minerals tend to concentrate in the flocculated fraction. We are regularly told that before making a new investment one should seek the advice of his banker. If we were to place the subject matter of this paper before bankers. other than those who have experience in our mining camps, their reply would probably be evasive. However, if for example: a mining company asks them for a loan and offers as security certain mining investments, they are, in most cases, explosively candid. The idea is preposterous, unless, under Section 88 of the Bank Act, the mining company is able to deposit with the bank, gold or silver bullion, to an amount sufficiently in excess of the loan, to provide for what the banker describes as a reasonable margin of safety in case of contingencies. In addition the directors of the mine personally must jointly and severally guarantee payment of the loan. With any of these conditions missing the banking atmosphere becomes chilly. The local manager explains that the general situation, and particularly European conditions, are so unsettled that head office has warned him that his discretionary powers must not be exceeded under any circumstances.

An underground mine using room and pillar and retreat mining methods was developed during the 1950?s. In 2009 an open cast mine was opened in the same reserve with the objective of mining five coal seams including the one previously mined. Recently, a series of slope failures were detected at the open cast mine. The surface mine map was overlain on the underground mine map, and it was observed that the slope failures were located above a retreat mined area where the overburden had caved and the ground subsided. The deformation and displacement attributable to subsidence caused a loss of strength in the overburden strata. The objective of this paper is to study the causes of slope sliding (or failure) due to the ground subsidence of rock layers above oldmined out areas. A map was created to overlay the two mines -- the abandoned underground mine and the active surface mining. Two- and three-dimension numerical modeling was conducted to simulate the slope behavior and to verify whether the mine subsidence was the cause of slope instability. This study indicated that the subsided rock layers were the cause of slope instability and sliding.

This report details the preliminary calculations governing the underwater collapse of an oil pipe via explosive lensing. An explosive lens changes the detonation wave produced by an explosive by changing the geometric conditions of the explosive (Zukas and Walters, 1998). Multiple lenses can be focused on a central location, generating a series of precise detonation waves collapsing in on a specific point. This report will assume a spherical-shaped, single explosive charge and explain how the authors determined the explosive charge size needed to seal a metal pipe while focusing on one explosive charge acting on part of the pipe. Future calculations will analyze the combination of multiple explosive charges acting on the pipe as a whole.

Innovation in the tilemaking ceramic industry is stressing properties like powder flowability, ability to toughen green tiles, so turning technological requirements of ball clays ever stricter in terms of plasticity, dispersion in water, rheological behavior, workability in the green state, refractoriness and firing colour. Technological performance of ball clays was improved by taking as benchmark the highest quality raw materials on the market. The mineralogy, plasticity, methylene blue index and ceramic response of the Patagonian ball clays are analogous to those of European clays, but improvement is needed to approach the highest quality materials. On this basis, the Frente A, Super, Puma, and Lote 8 deposits were selected and their characteristics enhanced by additions of highly plastic and white-firing corrective clays targeted on the benchmark. Porcelain stoneware formulations, containing improved ball clay mixes, were experimented at both laboratory and industrial scale. The improved ball clays behave like the best raw materials currently used, although modest changes occur in the mechanical properties, water absorption and whiteness of the fired products.

SAG mill throughput is often a bottleneck in increasing metal productivity. Improved size distribution control in the mill feed can be used to increase mill production. This can be accomplished by controlling blast fragmentation as a function of energy input and rock characteristics. Such an approach requires the integration of rock fragmentation and comminution modeling. The optimal mill feed size distribution is determined by adapting a population balance comminution model to a measure of rock hardness or fragility which is also relevant to the rock fragmentation that is achieved by blasting. The relation between the size distribution and fragility of the feed and of the mill&apos;s product and the critical size in a SAG mill is examined.

The method of chloride-hypochlorite leaching has the advantages of short process, low pollution and higher in reaction rate compared with the traditional leaching method. In this research, NaCl - NaClO solution is used to leaching gold from a refractory gold concentrate, and the influence of NaCl and NaClO concentration, reaction time to the leaching rate were investigated in this experiment. The raw materials and the leaching residue were characterized by a series of analysis methods such as XRD, XRF, SEM and EDS. Results indicate that the leaching rate and the desulfurization rate can be achieved at 96.26% and 98% with most optimum conditions as follows: NaCl concentration 50g/L, NaClO concentration 200g/L, Liquid-solid ratio 10:1, the best reaction time was 150 mins. And these conditions should be guaranteed pH<8.0, ORP>900mV.

Os aços austeníticos HP são empregados na fabricação dos tubos de fornos de reforma a vapor, sobretudo pela manutenção de sua elevada resistência mecânica e à corrosão, a temperaturas superiores à 700°C. Contudo, intercorrências durante a operação podem causar o bloqueio do fluxo interno de matéria-prima, gerando um aumento rápido de temperatura na parede do tubo, muito superiores àquelas de projeto. Este tipo de falha é conhecido como surto de temperatura, e pode levar à formação de grandes trincas longitudinais no equipamento. As caracterizações das transformações ocorridas no surto são importantes para determinar os parâmetros de detecção dessa condição através de ensaios não destrutivos. Por isso, com a finalidade de analisar a resposta magnética de amostras que sofreram surto, foram avaliados dois casos. O primeiro corresponde a análise de uma amostra proveniente de um tubo de reforma a vapor que sofreu surto de temperatura durante operação. O segundo caso, corresponde a amostras com estado V de evolução microestrutural, que foram submetidas a um ciclo térmico para simular o surto. A análise foi realizada via microscopia de força magnética. Os resultados obtidos mostraram resposta magnética no contorno dos carbetos da amostra surtada em serviço e na amostra com simulação a 1050°C.

Consistent increase has been the mark of North American potassium (K) consumption. In 23 of the last 25 years there was upward progress The pace of usage has quickened in the past three or four years This, together with a predicted accelerated future demand, has created unprecedented interest -and activity in the potash industry. Potassium enjoyed a ninefold increase in consumption from 1940 to the present time in North America (Figure 1). Since 1950, it increased from just over a million tons of potash (K20) annually to nearly three million tons in 1964. World-wide usage exclusive of mainland China is now about 10 million metric tons. Some predictions call for another doubling in consumption in the next 10 to 15 years, About 20 percent of the four million tons of K20 produced in North America is now exported overseas and this percentage is likely to increase in the years ahead. Ten years ago, exports represented only 3-1/2 percent of total K2O production from this continent.

In this paper a sample of the apatite flotation from Cajati-SP was studied. Four alternatives of depressants were analyzed: corn starch, cassava starch, sodium hexametaphosphate with corn starch and sodium silicate with corn starch. The cassava starch had a gain of 7.5% in the metallurgical recovery and a collector consumption 13.8% greater than corn starch. Alternatives with hexametaphosphate and silicate sodium had a loss of 6.7% and 7.8% in recovery respectively in comparison with corn starch.

"As a part of the wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines, metallurgical services were extended to other Government agencies engaged in purchasing and stock-piling some of the more critical and strategic materirals. At the request of George A. Easley, representative of the MetalsReserve Company, beneficiation studies were made on a sample of complex tin-tungsten ore from the Urania mine in Bolivia, South America.The low-grade Urania ore (1.9 percent Sn and 1.55 percent W03) contained a very complex of cassiterite and scheelite with iron sulfidesand quartz. The problem involved in concentrating this ore was the removal of sulfides and silica by stage flotation and gravity concentration for the production of a marketable tin-tungsten concentrate. The sulfides and primary quartzite were readily rejected, but the secondary quartz was intimately associated with cassiterite, and ultimate recovery depended on treatment of minus 560-mesh (theoretical) sizes.The ore was amenable to concentration by ore dressing. Seventy percent of the tin and 83 percent of the tungsten were recovered in a product that assayed approximately 20 percent Sn and 20 percent W03 and that met grade ""F"" specifications of the Metals Reserve Company for mixed tin-tungston concentrates."

Mining activity in Mexico began in the 16th century when the Spanish realized the mining potential of the new territory. Since that time, mining has evolved into a strong and vital industry for the country. Good professionals in the mining-related fields are fundamental to the growth and improvement of this industry. Since the end of the 18th century, formal education in mining has been available at the University of Guanajuato, in Guanajuato, Mexico. This school created one of the first schools of mines on the North American continent in 1828. In recent times, some other programs have been created at other universities. Universities offering mining related programs Listed here are the seven universities in Mexico that offer mining related degrees. They are the University of Guanajuato, UNAM, the University of Zacatecas, the University of Chihuahua, the University of Sonora, the University of Coahuila and the University of San Luis Potosi. The University of Guanajuato is the only Mexican university that offers graduate studies at the master&apos;s level. No PhD programs in mining engineering are offered at any Mexican university. Programs at each university are of different duration. They are: • University of Guanajuato-Five-and-a-half years, divided into five years of classroom instruction and six months in the working place. • University of Zacatecas - Five years of classroom instruction.

Construction of the North Hollywood line of the Los Angeles Metro System required crossing the Hollywood Fault as the twin transit tunnels extend into the San Fernando Valley. The Hollywood Fault is considered active and represents the largest active fault that the North Hollywood Redline extension will cross. The feature is a thrust fault with the north plate overriding the southern plate and creating the Santa Monica Mountains in the process. South of the fault lies the alluvial valley and Hollywood. North of the fault are the Santa Monica Mountains which rise locally to more than 1200 feet. The average overburden at the seismic section is about 300feet and is overlain by Runyon Canyon Park, a municipal park with environmentally sensitive areas. The actual fault plane was anticipated to lie within the southernmost120 feet of the 600 to 700-foot-wide fault zone. The special seismic section constructed for the tunnels consisted of an enlarged cross-section with special lining, drainage and finish features that will facilitate the restoration of metro service in case of a major event occurring on the Hollywood Fault. The discussion will address the geology, the procedure used to define the design event and predicted displacements, the unique design features as well as the construction methods used and the instrumentation and the results obtained.
