Beneficiation of low-grade nonmetalliferous mineral deposits by electronic color sorting is currently undergoing a period of rapid development. For those deposits in which the specific gravity, strength, soundness, and electric and magnetic properties of the ore and gangue are similar, the possibility of separation by color, reflectivity, or fluorescence offers hope for the utilization of much poorer quality ore than previously thought possible. For those ores in which consistency of color is required or for which a dry process is preferred, the electronic color sorter is particularly adaptable. Tests performed late in 1966 and reported herein are the result of continued interest in the dry beneficiation of gypsum and the development of higher capacity color-sorting machines. These tests should be considered only as an indication of the efficiency of the process and only with respect to the low-grade, untreated ore tested. Although most of the ore mined in Martin County, Ind., is of acceptable quality, a few thin carbonate strata and irregular nodules of dolomite and limestone are present within the main evaporite bed (Fig. 1).

In 1874 my attention was called to what seemed to me an interesting and new nickel and cobalt combination found in Ludwig and Carter's copper mine, near Mason Valley, Esmeralda County, Nevada. With the assistance of Mr. A. Hebberling I made several partial analyses of the mineral or minerals. I also communicated with my friend, Professor H. B. Cornwall, of the John C. Green School of Science, College of New Jersey, who analyzed a couple of specimens which I forwarded to him. The copper ore occurs in the mine principally as carbonate and to a certain extent as silicate, the latter generally in connection with clay seams or bands. In some places, together with the copper silicate and clay, generally interstratified with them, there occurred a compact shining black mineral (a) containing nickel and cobalt. Occasionally, in cavities, in connection with (a) was found a black substance (b), either massive and in this case very similar to (a) but with driller lustre, or forming an incrustation with rough and botryoidal surface and radial-fibrous structure, or granular and earthy. A few specimens were found having on the surface very fragile black needles (c) sometimes 1/2-inch long, interspersed with needles of malachite. Thin-seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges can be further amplified depending on such factors as labor unions, federal and state regulations and market characteristics. This article explores the turnaround situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Co. (TMC), a medium-sized, underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania. The company has used a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations and communications to improve its cash flow from negative to positive within a projected five-year span. An intensive upgrade-rebuild-replacement program for mining equipment and systems has also been established to support other management activities. Discussion Thin-seam coal mining is an industry within the broader industry of coal mining. Thin seam mining faces the same cost pressures and engineering problems as its higher-seam competitors, without the advantages of moving volume per foot of extracted material. To stay at economic parity with others requires additional creativity within the management team to extract higher productivity gains from the existing workforce and mining systems. The Tanoma operation is a deep mine in Indiana County, PA, about one hour northeast of Pittsburgh. Coal is extracted from the Lower Kittanning "B" seam. Henry M. Parks, director of the Oregon. Bureau of Mines and Geology, has supplied the following information regarding a recent discovery .of manganese ore in Jefferson County, Oregon, about seventeen miles southeast of the railroad at Eagle Point, a station on the P. & E. Railway. The occurrence is about five miles southeast of Lake Creek Post Office and near the confluence of Lost Creek with the south fork of Little Butte Creek. The manganese ore occurs as psilomelane and pyrolusite, disseminated through a flat bed of volcanic tuff breccia; at a point where the bed was penetrated by a churn drill hole, the thickness of the ore-bearing stratum was 30 ft. Development thus far has consisted of open-cuts, one of which exposes a face about 40 ft. high and 75 ft. broad. Other smaller open-cuts have followed the bed for a. distance of 400 yards. The nodules of manganese mineral vary from a maximum of 25 to 50, lb. down to the size of beans and others as small as mustard seed. These grains, when clean, average from 55 to 58 per cent. manganese. A 12-ft. groove sample in the face of the main open-cut yielded 14.86 per cent. manganese. The peculiar occurrence of the manganese nodules should present but slight difficulty in concentration. This report is the 25th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations, and the 7th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.3 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1960, and furnishes references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1960 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned can be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Miscellaneous section; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications, Coal programs of the Bureau of Mines extend over the wide range of theoretical and applied studies indicated by the table of contents. Fundamental research on coal structure and on the properties of coal will, over a period of time, increase the general knowledge about coal Which scientists and engineers may use in answering practical questions and in solving problems in the mining and utilization of coal. More applied studies are conducted in connection with the developement and evaluation of new mining techniques and the effective processing and utilization of coal and of coal products. Health and safety activities, analyses of coal being mined, and technical advice and assistance to Federal agencies in connection with fuel and boiler-water problems are among the practical services handled by the Bureau.4 5

During a research program to develop improved methods for recovering elemental sulfur and useful sulfur compounds from secondary source materials, the technical literature was searched for pertinent articles on processing methods. This report summarizes results of the literature survey and describes the more important processes that have been used or suggested for recovering sulfur and sulfur compounds from all non-Frasch sources. The bibliography presented represents a survey of the available English language literature on the subject through 1958, with particular attention focused on the period 1950 through 1958. Engineering Index and Industrial Arts Index were the principal guides used in the survey of this period. Chemical Abstracts was used to a limited extent to identify a few key foreign articles and patents. The Sulfur Symposium (4)4 published in November 1950 by Industrial and Engineering Chemistry includes a broadly representative selection of the literature up to 1949. Therefore, this reference was used extensively to locate and list pertinent articles on processing methods reported in the period prior to 1950.

Since 1990 and the publication of the Ergonomics Program Management Guidelines for Meatpacking Plants by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration, numerous reports of companies implementing ergonomics program have been published. However, despite these numerous reports, no examples of implementing an ergonomics program in the mining industry have been reported. In 2000, NIOSH initiated a long-term project to demonstrate the implementation of an ergonomics process designed to identify and reduce exposures to ergonomic risk factors found in mining. The mine selected for this project was the Jim Bridger Mine, a surface coal mine located 35 miles northeast of Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, WY. This paper discusses how a large, surface coal mine implemented an ergonomics program and the lessons learned while doing so.

It is as easy to sell a War Savings Stamp as it is in ordinary postage stamp, and we have launched a great drive to establish sales stations everywhere. The plan is simplicity itself! Your town, city, county or State Director can furnish you with supplies, posters and publicity matter. You can get the stamps from your post office or bank. Such stations should be at every pay window of manufacturing, industrial and mercantile establishments, and at every retail counter in the country. These stamps should be the easiest bought merchandise in the world, and when these agencies are established this end will have been accom-plished. Therefore, please lay extra pressure on the thought of immediately establishing these sales stations.

Phosphate deposits are distributed widely over the earth's surface. Of the known areas of deposit, eight fields are of particular interest because of their vast reserves of high grade phosphatic material and the volume of their production that goes to the world's great consuming areas. These fields, in the order of their present economic importance, are situated respectively in Florida, French Morocco, Kola Peninsula of U.S.S.R., Tunisia and Algeria, Tennessee, Mon- tana-Idaho-Wyoming-Utah, Ocean and Naru Islands in the Gilbert group, and in Egypt. The Rocky Mountain deposits have a comparatively low ranking in the phosphate trade of today, but this field contains one of the largest known reserves of phosphatic material, associated with which are recoverable trace minerals, which are of increasing importance in our national economy. The first discoveries of phosphate rock in the western states were recorded in Cache1 and Rich² counties in Utah, respectively in 1889 and 1897. Mining operations were begun on these deposits near Montpelier, Idaho, in 1906. During the latter year geological studies of the phosphate beds were started by Weeks and Ferrier of the U. S. Geological Survey. These studies have been continued to the present day by a distinguished roster of the Survey's technicians. Operations ill Colorado oil fields in 1934 were not quite so extensive as in 1933, but much better results were obtained and one new oil field was discovered. In all, 26 wells were drilled, of which 9 were oil wells, 1 was a gas well, and 16 were dry holes. New oil production totaled 10,220 bbl. and new gas production totaled 33,714,000 cu. ft. This compares with new oil production in 1933 of 1238 bbl. and new gas production of 14,307,000 cu. ft. Dry holes in 1933 totaled 29 as conlpared with 16 in 1934. Oil was discovered in the Hiawatha gas field, Moffat County, in 1934 in the Mountain Fuel Supply Company's No. 4B Wilson, C. NE. NW. of sec. 23, 12N., 100W. This well was completed in a sand in the Wasatch (Tertiary) at 2304 to 2337 ft., after plugging back from 3797 ft. It made 20 bbl. of oil initially. No. 4B Wilson is the first well in the Rocky Mountain region to discover oil in commercial amounts in rocks younger than Cretaceous, and while it is not expected that Hiawatha will develop into an oil field of important proportions, eventually it may produce a considerable amount of oil as the gas pressure declines. The mining companies on the page opposite are among the elite industrial 500 in Fortune magazine's June Directory of U. S. firms that rang up the largest dollar sales volume in 1967. The companies are listed according to their 1967 sales rank, which is given along with their 1966 rank for comparison. Mergers played an important role in the addition and deletion of several companies to the list. Tenneco, Occidental Petroleum and Gulf & Western Industries made the list of mining companies by their purchases of Kern County Land, Island Creek Coal, and New Jersey Zinc, respectively. In turn, these three companies disappeared from the list. General Aniline & Film acquired Ruberoid, and Ideal Cement is now a part of Ideal Basic Industries -a name change only. Only two companies, St. Joseph Lead and U.S. Smelting, Refining & Mining, were actually displaced from the list. The mining industry increased its sales 14.5%, placing fourth among the 22 industrial classifications listed in the Directory. However, among the ten biggest losers in sales were four mining companies-Kennecott Copper, -33.8% ; Asarco, -21.8% ; Amax, -16.5%; and Anaconda, -15.1%.-which was mostly a result of the copper strike, except for Amax which suffered strikes at its molybdenum and aluminum operations. Mining heads the list of industries for return on sales and assets per employee, while it rests at the bottom with respect to sales per dollar of invested capital.

THIS paper gives a brief account of the geologic and production problems encountered in the Grass Creek oil field, the methods used in their solution, and the beneficial results obtained from the work. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance received from J. H. Pearson and Miss Ninettta A. Davis in the collection of the data and the preparation of the cross-sections. Permission for its publication was given by the officials of the Midwest Refining Co. and the Ohio Oil Co. The Grass Creek oil field is located in Ts. 98-99 W., R. 46 N., Hot Springs County, Wyo. The productive area includes about 2 1/2 mi. (4 km.) on the apex of a great anticlinal fold occupying more than 150 sq. mi. Fig. 1 shows the structural contours of the field. Oil was dicovered in the field in June, 1914; development proceeded rapidly and production rose to a maximum in 1918. The marketed production has been approximately as follows: BARRELS BARRELS 1915 94,073.5 1918 2,946,774.27 1916 1,404,183.97 1919 2,000,584.84 1917 2,780,697.51 1920 1,485,080.94 About 350 wells, 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) deep have been drilled to reach the upper oil sands; two companies, the Ohio Oil Co. and the Midwest Refining Co., operate the entire field.

This report analyzes electrical accident data in the metal/non-metal mining industry. Accidents are categorized to determine their root causes. Special attention is given to accidents associated with inadequate or defective grounding of mine power systems. Recommendations are made concerning proper grounding practice, especially for dredges and for quarries in hard rock or sand. The costs of instituting the recommended practices are estimated for model mine power systems which are based on field data obtained from 37 mines and several electrical contractors. The expected benefits of various suggested safety practices are also estimated.

THE following example of the practical application of engineering geology is of interest in that it demonstrates the advantage of keeping accurate records of all wells, whether drilled by one's self or by others, together with the advantage gained by gathering such data during the process of development. The fault described was found in the autumn of 1915, during the hurried development caused by the discovery of the famous Gusher Bend pool in Red River Parish, Louisiana. The writer was at the time employed by one of the operating companies as geologist, and the example is a portion of the routine work. LOCATION The oil fields of northern Louisiana and east Texas are located in Caddo, Bossier, De Soto and Red River Parishes, Louisiana, and Marion County, Texas. A very narrow strip of the eastern portion of the latter is productive. The producing oil pools are known as the Caddo Field, in the northern part, and the De Soto-Red River Field, in the southern. The two fields are 60 miles apart. There are several gas fields between then, but no important supply of oil has been found, though there are several producing wells in the Anona chalk, locally called the chalk rock, in the Elm Grove gas field in Township 16 North, Range 11 West (see Plate 1).

The Carlin Trend is North America's premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada's Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km'- (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of 16 out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont's exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont's Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output.

A visitor to the Northern anthracite coal-field in 1844 wrote: " History and song have hallowed the valley of Wyoming, and everything pertaining to it seems wrapped in an atmosphere of romance." Song and history have since been almost forgotten in the rush of enterprise and business energy, while the invested capital which has built 160 colliery plants, producing last year 17,031,826 tons of coal and giving employment to 50,000 men and boys, lends an atmosphere the inspiration of which is the very sustenance of prosperity and progress. The fundamental cause of this great valley's financial strength, however, rests on the fulness of its mineral wealth. Its mountains surround and its cities are built upon anthracite coal. Its foundation, physically, financially and socially, is coal. Its geology has governed its growth and developed its greatness. In 1768, ten years, prior to the celebrated Wyoming massacre, two Connecticut Yankees, named Gore, settled near Wilkesbarre, Luzerne County, and, burning Pennsylvania anthracite in their blacksmith's forges, were the first to utilize it as a fuel. Its first use in the household was also at Wilkesbarre, where, in 1808, Judge Fell burned it in an open grate. Carbondale, Wilkesbarre, and Scranton were early recognized as the coal centers of the field.

THE Rock Chapel plant of Consolidated Quarries Corporation (Fig, 1) is three miles northeast of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia, It was opened about eight years ago for crushed stone aggregate. This paper reviews a number of experiments that have been tried in drilling and blasting, and gives the practice in use today. The rock worked is a bare dome of granite gneiss about 3000 ft. in diameter, rising 150 ft. above the surrounding ground (Fig. 2). It is uniform in composition and quality, without seams, and extends down-ward to unknown depth below the quarry floor. A water well drilled 600 ft. remained in the same rock. The principal difficulty encountered in blasting is an easy split, which tends to break down the rock in large blocks.

Through close cooperation with geophysical and geological test work by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in Beaufort County, the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory assisted in the evaluation of North Carolina's most valuable mineral resource, the Pungo River phosphate deposit. After a core evaluation study, the flotation process for the concentration of North Carolina phosphate was demonstrated in a 500-lb per hr pilot plant in Asheville. Tonnage samples of phosphate concentrate were produced for customer evaluation in the United States, Europe, and the Far East. Plans for a larger pilot plant to be erected at the plant site at Lee Creek were prepared for TGS. The larger pilot plant was operated by TGS in conjunction with a test dredging operation which led to the adoption of a dragline dry mining method to move 90,000 tpd of material for the production of 10,000 tpd of phosphate concentrate in the all-flotation phosphate concentrator. Calcining, dry grinding, and byproduct studies complimented the construction of one of the world's largest and most modern fertilizer raw-feed complexes on the eastern North Carolina seaboard.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to evaluate the optimum design for a rock-breaking explosive charge that could be fired unconfined in a gassy or dusty coal mine without the danger of igniting the flammable atmosphere. Charges of various shapes, with and without cavities, were tested in a gallery using 3-by 3-by l-ft concrete blocks as simulated boulders. For these tests the optimum charge, in terms of cost, weight, and convenience in handling, consisted of a flat l-1/2-lb charge of permissible explosive seven-eighths of an inch thick and 7 in in diameter encased in a l/2-in thick layer of fine salt (NaCI). This work demonstrated that it should be possible to produce an inexpensive explosive rock-breaker charge that would be safe to use in underground coal mines.

The Lafayette Bluff tunnel, currently under construction for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), will be among the widest highway tunnels in the United States. The 199-meter tunnel is being constructed in a closely jointed, variably weathered diabase rock mass. Cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 4 meters to 27 meters, and is less than the tunnel excavated width of 18.3 meters for about 60 percent of its length. These factors dictated special support and lining design, limitations on excavation sizes and required sequences for support installation. Tunnel excavation is by controlled blasting, with multiple top headings and bench. Rock support and lining consists of external portal beams, rockbolts and reinforced shotcrete. A final concrete lining provides structural support for the rock mass and the membrane waterproofing system.
