The analysis of structure using joint set statistics is well known. Other data such as the position of discontinuities and the contacts between rock mass units cannot be easily incorporated in simple statistical analysis based on orientation alone. Algorithms to model the structure of rock slopes using measurements of the orientation and position of discontinuities are being developed by CSIRO Exploration and Mining. These algorithms provide a capability to model the structure of a rock slope and estimate the likelihood of the formation of hazardous blocks in existing or proposed rock slopes and identification of the location and size of these blocks. The algorithms provide the basis of structural modelling to identify potential failure mechanisms in rock slopes.

Let's review the economic factors in mill design. Talking about engineering economics in mill design reminds me of an old' saying "There are several ways to handle women but nobody knows what they are." I'm sure that the same economic factors do not apply to each of our mill designs, but for the sake of emphasis, it is well to review a few of them. They are so simple that we are apt to feel they are not important. Other speakers today are talking about the engineering factors of mill design, but I'm asking the question "Have we checked the economic factors involved in these designs? Have we checked the obvious? Many great discoveries have resulted from analysis of the things that appeared to be obvious all the time. What are some of these economic factors? Perhaps the most basic one is simply the value of minerals in place if minerals have value in the ground, they have value only because many important and different considerations add up to the probability that the minerals can be mined, beneficiated and disposed of profitably. The size formation and quality of the ore body, the distance from market, and the transportation available to the market area, depreciation rates, taxes, and the ownership interests involved are but some of the factors that must dovetail into the answer of profit, an answer prerequisite to hoped-for financing.

"A description is given of a series of tests performed to determine the comparative effects which dynamic and static straining, in compression, have on the physical strength properties of mild steel and an aluminum alloy. The dynamic deformation was imposed during the passage of single stress pulses of about 100 micro-second duration. These pulses were recorded with strain gauges mounted near both ends of the specimen. The resulting records were analysed using a simple wave theory; there from the dynamic stress-strain curves for the respective metals were deter-mined and were then compared with the static stress-strain relation. The respective hardnesses of the metals after deformation are evaluates by means of static stress-strain curves in compression. The micro-structures of the metals before and after deformation are also shown. It is observed that dynamic de-formation considerably modifies the rate of strain hardening. This modified hardening appears to be persistent. The observed differences in physical strength properties and micro-structures are discussed in the light of the accepted dislocation theory for metals."

"The model described is a design and economic planning tool for analyzing surface mineral deposits. Mineralization, topography, costs and significant geologic features are input to the model. The results are:(i) final pit limits yielding the maximum total profit,(ii) annual cut-off grades and plant sizing yielding the maximum present value, and(iii) annual maps of the pit and annual production statistics for the mine, concentrator and smelter.Additionally, summaries are printed of the block mining sequence and cash flow. A special feature is an option to include dump-leaching operations. Stockpiling of material can also be simulated by the model. The model is built around theories of dynamic cut-off grades and a pit design algorithm. The dynamic cut-off grades maximize present value by examination of all economic and physical constraints for the optimum combination. The pit design algorithm is a set of rules formulated to find the maximum value from a special graph. The graph is different from graphs of analytical geometry, being made up of points and arrows connecting some of the points. These graph elements describe the relationship between any point in the deposit and the material which must be mined to get at that point. The model was designed to bring together the interdependent theories of economics, pit design and production scheduling."

The Taylor Creek lead-zinc deposit is on Taylor Creek, approximately 1-1/2 miles from tidewater, at the head of Duncan Canal, on the east side of Kupreanof Island, Petersburg district, southeastern Alaska. The property was located in 1903, and a 30-foot discovery cut was put to the west tank of the creek. Very little prospecting end developing has been done since that time. The property was examined by J. C. Roehm, associate mining engineer, Territorial Department of Mines, Juneau, Alaska, in June 1946. From exposure n the creek, a mineralized zone with possible dimensions of 1,700 feet by 1,000 feet was indicated. The general strike was northwest, and the dip was low and variable to the northwest. During September through November 1948, the Bureau of Mines conducted a project on the property. Four diamond-drill holes, totaling 770.5 linear feet, were drilled from the surface and 280 lineal feet of hand trenching done. The mineral deposit was found to occur as patches that appear to be a replacement in dolomitic limestone. The patches of mineralization are small, irregularly shaped, and irregularly distributed. Maps showing the location of the drill holes and trenches, analyses of the cores from the drill holes, and anal lee of the samples from the trenches accompany this report (see, also, appendixes A, B, and C).

Goethite is an important naturally occurring sorbent for divalent heavy metals and has often been used as a model compound in studies of adsorption on oxide mineral surfaces. Surface complexation modeling, surface spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques have all been applied to goethite adsorption. Modeling studies have shown that usually several different sets of fitted parameters are equally successful in representing surface charging and adsorption data. Surface spectroscopic data are proving valuable in determining the nature of the surface sites, and refined models now incorporate structural information on interatomic distances and coordination numbers. Multisite surface complexation models can give very good fits to surface charging and adsorption data, but further improvements are needed to better represent surface reactions involving exchange of protons and divalent cations. Recent experimental and modeling studies on adsorption of divalent transition metals on goethite are described and the present status of the field is assessed.

Al/Mg/Ti laminated metal composite sheet (LMCS) can combine the merits of each of metal components, and obtain excellent performances. It incorporates the advantages of high strength, light weight, easy melt and atomization, and good space adaptability to substitute for the bumper Al sheet of Whipple shield structure for space debris shield. The Al/Mg/Ti LMCS was fabricated by hot roll bonding technology in a certain sequence. The manufacturing process and parameters were analyzed and studied, including the first rolling reduction, roll boding temperature and stacking structure of each metal. The microstructure of dissimilar metals and bonding interface were characterized and analyzed. The optimized manufacturing procedures and parameters were presented based on the microstructure and mechanical properties of LMCS. The research results offer some guides and references for controlling the shape of bonding interface, optimizing the annealing process, improving the mechanical properties of Al/Mg/Ti LMCS.

The Azores islands are located on a triple junction where the American, African (AFR), and Euroasian (EUR) plates meet. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), oriented N-S, represents two branches of the T; an E-W branch defines the EUR/AFR boundary called the Terceira Rift. The nature and structure of this plate boundary, as well as the dynamics of the interaction of tectonics and volcanism remain unconstrained. The Azores plateau is seated on a mantle domain of anomalously low seismic S-wave velocities, and gravity and geoid anomalies, where the apparent thick crust is thought to relate to larger degrees of melting initiated at greater depths [1]. The cause of these anomalies is controversial but many authors consider the presence of an anomalously hot/wet enriched mantle probably supplied by a plume [2]. The geochemistry of the subaerial and most submarine lavas from the plateau reinforces the plume model beneath the Azores [3-4]. The origin, size and present location of the plume is under debate but an area near Terceira is the favoured plume centre [5]. [ ] SEAFLOOR HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS IN THE AZORES AREA (36ºN ? 40ºN) More than 150 active and fossil hydrothermal systems are known in the oceanic seafloor [6]. During the drilling campaign conducted between October, 1942; and May, 1943, to prove the extent of the scheelite deposit worked by King Island Scheelite N.L. at Grassy, King Island, Tasmania, 35 holes were drilled and 606 samples recovered and assayed for their content. Of these, 238 came from outside the limits of the orebody and were for the most part barren, although a few contained some scheelite. The present statistical analysis is made only of the 368 samples taken from diamond-drill cores of the orebody itself.Drilling Pattern and Sampling MethodsFrom the purely statistical viewpoint, it is realised that methods employed in selecting sites for diamong.-drilling, and of collecting samples from drill cores, do not give a completely unbiassed set of data for analysis. Fig. 1 is a sketch plan showing the relativepositions of the drillholes, which were inclined at an angle of depression of 50 deg. The pattern does not conform to a properly randomized and' regularly-spaced grid, the positions of the later holes being determined by the results obtained from previous holes.Statistically, the bias is, therefore, favourable. The unequal spacing of the drill holes and the lack of uniformity in direction of the lines along which the holes were drilled are unsatisfactory from the mathematical viewpoint; but it is realised that these irregularitiesare difficult to avoid in determining by the most economical methods the extent of such an orebody, and are dictated by geological rather than mathematical necessity.Sampling, also, is lacking in complete uniformity. Each sample is approximately 10ft. in length. However, owing to the fact that 100% recovery of core is rarely achieved, and actual lengths of samples taken are ,primarily governed by the length of the drill runs,and secondarily by lithological changes, there is a considerable amount of variation in the sample length.AssayingWith the exception of 28 samples from three drill holes all samples dealt with in this paper were assayed in the Melbourne University Ore-Dressing Laboratory of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. These assays were given to the nearest 0.05% WOg as it was considered that more accurate determination was not possible. This fact has been taken into consideration in the frequency analysis below. The 28 assays determined by the Tasmanian Mines Department were given to the nearest 0.01%.

Recent studies and limited tests indicate favorable results utilizing high accuracy electronic detonator technology over conventional non-electric pyrotechnic systems. This study discusses the application of this technology using the Daveytronic programmable system in an on-going production basis. The study quantifies the performance as it relates to fragmentation, excavation, vibration and productivity in an eastern U.S. aggregate mining operation.

This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using large tractor dozers in land reclamation of strip-mined areas. The procedures used are patterned after engineering models developed for evaluation of military ground vehicles in cross-country operations. Tractor dozer manufacturers furnished information on capabilities of existing equipment and ideas on the practicability of using dozers larger than those currently available Generally, they believe that current dozers in the 500? to 700-horsepower range are about as large as can be built and remain economically feasible. However, one manufacturer has a wheeled dozer rated at 1200 horsepower, and another is testing a tracked dozer of about the same horse-power.

Electrochemical, chemical, and image analysis techniques were utilized together with statistical analysis methods to determine the effect of various anode impurities on copper electrorefining performance. Results indicate that arsenic is a beneficial anode impurity. Anode lead and sulfur are shown to decrease electrorefining performance. Specific emphasis is given to the influence of individual elements on current efficiency, slime particle generation, and cell voltage parameters.

A discussion of the various factors affecting the accuracy of volume fraction determination by the direct comparison X-ray diffraction method is presented. To minimize errors introduced by nonrandomization effects such as preferred orientation and large grain size, as well as errors introduced by statistical effects, an iterative mathematical analysis is introduced. This analysis is applied to all observable diffractio~ spectra from a given specimen by means of computer techniques and is statistically superior to the standard direct comparison technique which utilizes only one or tm sets of intensity spectra. The computer program also presents a graphical interpretation of- the results which enables the investigator to visualize and readily assess the scatter in volume fraction estimates caused by deviations from randomness. Finally, the iterative analysis is applied to experimental data collected from a series of plain carbon steels in both the as-received and spheroidized conditions to determine the volume fraction of cemen-tite present in each case. The results show markedly good agreement with chemical analyses for all spheroidized specimens. In theory, quantitative X-ray diffraction is a power-ful analytical technique for precise determination of the volume fractions of various phases present in a multiphase poly crystalline aggregate. There are two generally used methods; both utilize the fact that the intensity of a diffraction line of a particular phase is a function of volume fraction of that phase present in the aggregate. The more common method is the so-called internal standard technique where a known amount of standard substance is mixed with the aggregate containing the unknown. The resulting ratio of the intensity of a particular diffraction line of the unknown to the intensity of a diffraction line from the standard is used to find the weight fraction of unknown material by reference to the intensity data obtained from a previously prepared set of standards containing the same amount of standard material. The details of this technique are outlined in standard works on X-ray diffraction.' The disadvantages of the technique are that it requires the use of powder specimens and that the powder mixture must be homogeneous near the surface to the maximum effective beam depth. The alternative technique is the direct comparison method in which the ratio of the intensity of a diffraction line of a phase in the aggregate to the intensity of a second-phase diffraction line yields the ratio of the volume fractions of each phase present. This method has been applied most extensively to the determination of the percentage of retained austenite in martensitic steels and to determining the amounts of hcp and fcc allotropic modifications in pure cobalt5 and the amounts of hexagonal and rhombohedra1 modifications in graphite.8 This method is applicable to bulk as well as powder aggregates and is the technique which will be considered in the following text. It is the purpose of the present communication to show that by combining the results of X-ray diffrac-tometry with the use of high-speed digital computers the results of the direct comparison quantitative X-ray analysis technique can be optimized by using all of the data available on a diffraction pattern. THEORETICAL DISCUSSION In optimizing any quantitative X-ray diffraction experiment, the problem of accuracy vs time to collect and analyze the experimental data arises. For any method to be practical, it is required that both experimental and analytical procedures are reasonably short. In most of the previous work performed by the direct comparison method, intensity data from only one or two sets of peaks were used to calculate the volume fraction of phases present in the aggregate. Consequently, rather long-time experimental measurements are required to assure that the intensity data are sufficiently accurate to justify the use of one or two sets of data. By using computer techniques to analyze the experimental data it becomes feasible to use all of the available data on a diffraction pattern. By so doing, the time spent in measuring any one diffraction maxima can be appreciably reduced. Although this results in poor counting statistics for any one maxima, the number of data points available for analysis is greatly increased. Based on the above discussion, it will be assumed that a continuous scanning counter-diffractometer technique will be used to collect intensity data from a two-phase mixture. The integrated intensity of the ith diffraction line from the a phase in the aggregate is given by:'" where is the volume fraction of the a phase, The various quantities in Eq. [la] are angular independent while those in [lb] depend on the hkl spectrum of a particular phase. The meaning of the individual quantities in Eqs. [la] and [lb] are given in Appendix 1. It is convenient at this point to outline briefly the factors which will affect the measured intensity of any one hkl spectrum. a) Extinction effects arise from two independent experimental conditions. A theoretical model is presented for describing the process and an experimental machine was built. The present testing results are included.

A survey of pillar conditions was carried out at 21 operating limestone mines that use the room-and-pillar method. The surveyed pillars were all located in rock that was classified as “Good” to “Very Good” using the RMR rock mass classification system. The average pillar width was 14.5m and the width to height ratio varied between 0.53 and 3.52. Pillar conditions were rated using a visual rating system that accounts for the effect of geological structures as well as stress related fracturing. Nine cases of pillar instability were recorded. Pillar instabilities were typically limited to individual pillars or small groups of pillars within an otherwise stable layout. Local geological structures such as inclined discontinuities or weak bedding planes contributed to instability in seven of nine cases that were observed. Elevated pillar stresses contributed to instability in the two remaining cases. All the unstable pillars observed had width-to-height ratios of less than 1.5. It is concluded that pillar instability is most likely to be caused by unfavorable geological structures in pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.5. Stress related instability such as rib spalling becomes more prevalent when the average pillar stress approaches approximately 20 MPa.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating pyrometallurgical and chemical methods for extracting copper from sulfide ores under conditions that provide for control of gaseous and solid emissions. Under this program, a new electrothermic reduction process was developed to produce blister copper after collecting essentially all of the sulfur by a single-unit operation. The process feasibility was indicated by a laboratory-scale investigation that demonstrated chalcopyrite concentrate can be roasted to less than 1 percent sulfur and that the resulting calcine can be reduced with carbon to blister copper by a cyclic process in a single arc-smelting furnace. Pilot-scale tests in an 800-kV-A electric-arc furnace demonstrated that 98.4 pct of the contained copper can be continuously recovered as metal by operating at bath temperatures between 1,350° and 1,375° C. Smelting rates of approximately 225 lb of blend ft2 of bath surface/hr resulted in power consumptions of approximately 520 kW-hr/ton of blend. The blister copper that was produced contained less than 0.1 pct iron while the precious metals reporting to the copper product and gangue material elimination were similar to those in a conventional smelting operation.

Instability of rock slopes often occurs in the form of excessive movement of bodies that are bounded by discontinuities. The well known limit equilibrium analysis for wedges and blocks suffer, however, from procedural simplifications and from the basic deficiency of limit eguilibrium analysis--the rigid body assumption. Thus, stability analysis for 2-and 3-plane wedges with a wide range of additional features regarding failure modes and external forces have been developed. The deficiency, due to the rigid body assumption, was corrected by an approach that includes the effects or the in-situ stress field and of the stiffness of discontinuities. The final step in making limit equilibrium approaches more valid was achieved with the method of artificial supports which makes it possible to identify among all possible failure modes the critical one and to determine the corresponding factor of safety. The analytical development includes the creation of appropriate computer codes and routines for programmable pocket calculators.
