"The average heat requirement per barrel of crude refined in the United States rose from 579,000 B. t. u. in 1940 to 584,000 B. t. u. in 1941. This marked the second successive year in which there was an apparent loss in fuel efficiency at refineries. This ""loss"" took place despite an increase in crude runs, which used to be an invariable indicator of a lower average.Probably the chief factor in the increased heat requirement in 1941 was the gain in the over-all gasoline yield from 43.1 percent in 1940 to 44.2 percent in 1941. Possibly another important factor was the further use of obsolete equipment to increase throughput.The refiners used more of all kinds of fuel excapt coke in 1941 than in 1940. However, the only fuels which increased materially in relative importance were refinery gas, which contributed 51.6 percent of the total heat units in 1941 compared with 50.7 percent in 1940, and natural gas, the share of which rose from 17.1 percent in 1940 to 18.0 percent in 1941. The changes in the percentages for the other fuels were as follows: Oil decreased from 25.7 to 24.1 percent; acid sludge fell from 2.7 to 2.5; coal remained at 3.4 percent; and coke (including steam) fell from 0.5 to 0.4 percent.New records for fuel efficiency were set in all three of the districts east of the Mississippi, namely, East Coast, Appalachian, and Indiana, Illi¬nois, etc. All the ether districts reported higher average fuel requirements in 1941, except the Louisiana Gulf and Arkansas-Louisiana inland.Since the year of the first statistics, the refiners have steadily increased their purchases of electricity. In 1941 total purchases were 1,862,996,000 kilowatt-hours, or 11 percent more than in 1940."

"A model for gold leaching was developed and implemented into a simulator. The simulator uses a description of the ore that is based on the mineral composition and precious metal content. The model accounts for the distribution of minerals and precious metals through the size intervals. An ore texture model based on precious metals and minerals grain sizes within the ore is used to predict the exposed surface of the species in the various size intervals. A model is proposed to predict the rate of dissolution of any species dissolution using the exposed surface, particle size, cyanide and oxygen concentrations, temperature, pH and agitation. The flow of slurry through a leaching tank is modelled using a parallel arrangement of perfect mixers to simulate a bypass and a Cholette-Cloutier mixer model. The simulator can be used for circuit optimization but was developed to provide an environment for learning the basic concepts of process analysis methods. Examples are given to illustrate the application of the simulator for planning tracer tests and sampling campaigns.INTRODUCTIONThe constant pressure to improve the operation of processes that are already close to optimum imposes to plant engineers to be aware of the available process analysis tools and to be able to use them to assess process operation and make a diagnosis to possible problems. Some of these tools are:•,Sampling the streams of a process;•,Data reconciliation;•,Analysis of mixing in reactors;•,Estimation of rate parameters;•,Optimal tuning and flow sheet modification;•,Automatic control and real time optimization.Although some of these tools are part of the curriculum of many university engineering programs, the students are not exposed to actual process analysis problems. In addition the complexity of the ore dressing processes compounded with unavoidable measurement errors and plant disturbances can discourage many motivated engineers. These factors often lead to an incomplete valorization of the collected data and a poor return on the investment associated with the sampling, testing and analysis of the samples.Simulators are readily available for process optimization (Yalcin and Shang, 2006) by allowing:•,The simulation of various flow sheet configurations;•,The simulation of a change of operating conditions;•,The simulation of various control strategies;•,The training of plant operators.However few simulators have been developed with the objective of providing an environment for training plant engineers and technicians to the use of tools for process analysis and optimisation."

This paper will review several flyrock incidents that occurred recently in the South African mining industry to highlight that potential difficulties of the historical approaches to the problem of flyrock based on correlation studies and regression analysis, including artificial neural networks and similar techniques. These process are not capable of addressing two core issues – root causes of flyrock and projection velocity. A further shortcoming of correlation techniques is that they give no information on the influence of rock size and shape on the flight distance. The scaled depth of burial model for crater blasting in the collar zone and bench face does not specifically address the question of flyrock velocity. A third approach, based on flight trajectory calculations, often neglects the very significant effects of air resistance on the trajectory. Some trajectory models incorporate air resistance but use an implausible fragment velocity model that cannot propel sizeable rocks to distances much beyond 150 m. (Approximately 500 ft.) Nonetheless, trajectory calculation incorporating the effects of air drag affords the most promising approach to the prediction of flyrock range. A unique and insightful feature of the proposed realistic flight modelling is that it collapses all suspected causes of flyrock, many of which are not well understood, to just a single parameter – the launch velocity. This indicates that the root causes of flyrock lie in the mechanisms of momentum transfer to broken rock and suggests new avenues of study for the explosives industry. In this paper we use the trajectory model to identify certain conditions on the bench whereby the impulse of gas pressure acting on fractured material on or close to a free face is enhanced, resulting in a greater transfer of momentum to potential flyrocks.

William Clinton Brown, Brooklyn, N. Y.: The demand for an apparatus for cooling water for condensers, refrigeratingmachinery and air-compressors, as well as water-jacketed furnaces, has led manufacturers to put such an apparatus on the market, so that it is now possible to purchase a cooling-tower, properly designed and constructed, by simply stating the amount of water to be cooled and the temperatures of the hot and the cold water. The principle is similar to that described by Mr. Henrich, but wood is not used in the best apparatus. There are two great objections to wood: First, it cannot last long under the very trying conditions to which it is subjected; and second, it absorbs the organic matter with which water in constant use becomes impregnated, and the resulting odor is very disagreeable. A few days ago I saw a cooling-tower and condenser, built by the Henry R. Worthington Co., in operation at the Edison electric-lighting station in Brooklyn, N. Y., cooling the water for a 700 horse-power condenser. It consisted of a large stack of iron, about 15 feet in diameter by about 30 feet high. This stack was filled with tiling through which the water falls. A whirligig distributes the water evenly over the top, and a large fan, about 6 feet in diameter, driven by a 10 horse-power electric motor, blows air into the bottom, thus giving a positive circulation. The water, in running down the sides of the tiling, is met by the blast of air, and enough is evaporated to cool the rest. The vacuum-gauge on the condenser showed 26 inches; so the condenser was undoubtedly getting sufficient cool water.

There has been a longstanding acceptance that burden plays a major role in the magnitude of ground vibration amplitudes generated from surface blasting. Much of the data that this belief is based upon is empirical in nature and may or may not represent an example of false inference. Recent published reports have rightly questioned the influence of burden and confinement on blast vibration amplitude, suggesting that the fracture condition of the rock mass is a better indicator. The increased investment in electronic detonators as a tool to control ground vibration amplitudes demands an understanding of vibration production detailed enough to make use of the vastly improved timing accuracy that they provide. A more accurate relationship may be found if we strip away the assumptions of the past and search for the underlying mechanism of vibration production in surface blasting. We must answer the question: What happens at or near the borehole when an explosive charge detonates that produces ground vibrations?

With the end of the official apartheid legislation in the early 1990s, South Africa was heralded as a non-racial country. However, racial awareness has been reintroduced into the country with the Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Gender and racial transformation are the current order of the day. All organizations are required to reflect in their make-up the demographics of the population as soon as possible. Scorecard shave been drawn up to measure the rate of transformation for gender and race in organizations. The mining industry in South Africa has been in the forefront of this transformation legislation and scorecards. This paper seeks to show the effect of gender and racial transformation on mining engineering education and professionalism by analysing the changing demographics of graduating mining students at both the South African universities offering a degree in mining engineering, the professional registration of mining engineers with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and the membership of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the vocational institute for mining engineers. It also demonstrates the absurdity of gender and racial quotas based solely on the demographics of the current population of the country. This paper shows the degree to which mining engineering has transformed in both gender and race.

For a state whose roots are in mining, most Colorado residents probably do not realize that the industry still contributes heavily to the state’s economy. In 2005, the industry contributed, directly and indirectly, about $8 billion to the state’s economy, according to the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). It employed nearly 10,000 people at mines and support businesses. And the mining industry in Colorado is one of the highest paying occupations in the state, averaging about $80,000 a year in wages and benefits. The state’s coal mining industry produced nearly 36 Mt (40 million st) of coal in 2005, valued at $800 million, the CMA said. That was seventh in the nation. And Colorado’s only major gold mine produced 10.2 t (329,000 oz) last year, valued at $124 million. That was third in the nation. And Phelps Dodge’s Henderson Mine produced about 12.7 kt (28 million lbs) of molybdenum, valued at $350 million. Colorado is the largest molybdenum producing state in the nation.

A quick, safe, and effective method has been developed that allows workers to clean their dust laden work clothing periodically throughout the day. For the mining industry, this technique is much more effective than the current federally approved method of using a vacuuming system. This newly designed method is relatively inexpensive and can be easily installed at any operation to allow workers to clean their clothing without contaminating the worker, the work environment. or co-workers to elevated respirable dust levels. This clothes cleaning process uses an air spray manifold to blow dust from a worker's clothing in an enclosed booth, which combines the dust for capture and removal by a baghouse dust collector. Since the air exhausted by the dust collector causes the booth to be under negative pressure. no measurable quantities of dust were ever measure escaping from the booth to contaminate the work environment and/or other workers. The worker performing the cleaning process is required to wear a half-mask fit- tested respirator with an N 100 filter, hearing protection, and full seal goggles. Dust samples taken inside the respirator of test personnel performing the clothes cleaning process showed very minimal to no respirable dust. This clothes cleaning process was performed in less than 20 seconds and was significantly y cleaner than either the Federally approved method of vacuuming, or the most common method or using a single compressed air hose. It was also determined during this research that polyester-cotton blend coveralls clean more effectively than coveralls which are 100 percent cotton. The newly designed clothes cleaning process has potential application to any industry where workers' clothing becomes contaminated with most any type of dust or product.

InteRmetallic compounds are formed in many binary metal systems. Some compounds are stable to their melting points, and others decompose at lower transition temperatures. Even those of the first class are dissociated in the liquid state, as indicated by the continuous form of their solubility curves at their melting points1. While the lattice structures of some of these compounds have been determined, their thermodynamic properties have not been investigated. In this paper is described the determination of the free energy and heat of formation of the compound CdSb, which is of the first class mentioned above, melting congruently at 455' C. This compound shows a rhombic structure, and the lengths of the edges of the elementary cell containing four molecules are: a = 6.52, b = 8.60, c = 4.16 A.' There are three possible methods of determining the free energy of formation of a compound of this type. The first method, applying the third law of thermodynamics, requires the measurement of its heat capacity preferably to liquid hydrogen temperatures, and a calorimetric determination of its heat of formation. The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO² = CdO + CO + Sb From the known free energies of formation of CdO, CO² and CO the free energy of formation of CdSb could be calculated. The third method measures the electromotive force of a galvanic cell in which the cell reaction is the reversible formation of the compound from the elements. The first method is generally applicable, but requires elaborate experimental equipment. The method of thermal analysis, so important in the development of metallographie science, has of recent years been falling into disuse owing to the development of other physical methods which give result's easier of interpretation and which can be used for the study of either equilibrium or transitional conditions because they do not require a continuously changing temperature. Nevertheless thermal analysis remains useful in the study of reactions that take place rapidly, and the simplicity of the experimental technique and the general availability of the apparatus involved are point's in its favor. Theoretically, thermal analysis is capable of giving specific and latent hat measurements and therefore should permit the study of reactions on a more fundamental basis than any other method. It is, however,difficult or impossible to obtain quantitative heat measurements from cooling curves obtained in the usual way. Even if the furnace containing the sample is cooled or heated at a linear rate, or if a gradient furnaec is employed to maintain a constant rate over a large range of temperature, the heat flow from or to the specimen depends on its previous history, for the difference of temperature between the specimen and its surroundings varies. The emissivity of the specimen surface, moreover, is unlikely to be constant. The able mathematical analysis by Russrll,1 although it prevent,s misinterpretat,ion of data, has an effect rather the reverse of that intended, and leaves the reader doubtful of the possibility of ever obtaining quantitative results from thermal curves. Nothing can be done to apply thermal analysis t'o the study of equilibrium conditions of reactions that arc not completed at rates of temperature change above about 1° C;. per minute, and this unfortunatetly excludes most solid transformations in alloys.† For the determination of liquidus

IT is most remarkable and valuable property of mediurn and high carbon steels that they should be so susceptible to heat treatment, the wide range of variability in tenacity, ductility, etc, due to the normal influence of the carbon in the untreated material being enormously inereased thereby.The physical properties of steel and other metals are much more closely related to their structure than to their ultimate analysis.For instance, we may by chemical analysis determine the carbon content of a steel to be 0.5% ; but this information alone is insufficient to enable us to say what are the physical properties of the metal.Such a steel may possess 11 tensile strength of anything from 35 tons per sq. in., with much ductility, up to 80 tons per sq. in., with practically no ductility, according to its heat treatment. A microscopie examination, on the other hand, would show the structural composition of the steel, from which its physical properties could be approximately deduced.
