The end of the war in Europe and the Pacific failed to curb the upward trend of production in Venezuela,- which easily surpassed that of any previous year. The total production for 1945 amounted- to 323,369, 430 bbl., which was 26 per cent over the total for 1944, the previous peak in the history of the oil industry of the country. This increase was caused mainly by the greater demand for petroleum in the last stages of the war; the fact that the danger from enemy submarines had been overcome, which allowed all oil companies to use increased shipping facilities, and the fact that more materials were available for drilling operations. However, the materials supplied were by no means adequate and considerable credit is reflected on the Venezuelan petroleum industry for the increased production obtained by utilizing all available equipment to its fullest extent.

A study was carried out to evaluate various batch flotation models for the recovery of minerals in a UG2 platinum ore. The major minerals in a UG2ore can be grouped as platinum group minerals, chromite, and siliceous gangue. This study also examined the entrainment of minerals during flotation. The models were ranked using statistical methods and an analysis of model-fit residuals. Entrainment parameters obtained from model fitting were evaluated for logic using a simple mineral-to-water ratio versus time plot. The foremost conclusion from the study was the importance of entrainment modelling. The measurement of water recovery increased the size of the data-set, and the inclusion of a simple entrainment model was statistically significant. The overall fit to the data was improved, and the entrainment model provided logical information on the recovery of gangue minerals that were not considered to be floatable.

Pulverized Fuel Combustion The apparatus shown in the illustration is a complete equipment f r supplying coal to boiler and metallurgical furnaces, cement and lime kilns, dryers, and to all furnaces requiring a temperature and quality of fame under prompt and easy control. It is claimed that the Aero Pulverizer makes practicable the highest efficiency obtainable from burning coal. It makes coal burn like a gas, a flame, the physical and chemical character of which is regulable- a flame that may be elongated or shortened, thus placing the zone of highest temperature where needed- a flame that may be made oxidizing, reducing, or neutral, as occasion may require. The coal is burned as pulverized, and there is no storage of the powder with its attendant hazard. Artificial drying before pulverizing is not necessary if the coal supply be sheltered from rain and snow. Where the Aero is used, it is wholly a furnace question whether a dryer should be installed; it is not at all a pulverizing or storage question. Labor is reduced to a minimum. Slack coal at low cost yields its last B.T.U.

"Physical as well as mathematical modeling was carried out to investigate the exothermic mass transfer in liquid metal systems. In these systems, the exothermicity induces unique heat, mass and momentum transfer phenomena. Moreover, these phenomena are deeply coupled and they are further complicated by the presence of a moving boundary.In the physical model used, ice cylinders were immersed into sulfuric acid solutions, because the intermixing of ice with sulfuric acid is very exothermic. In this low temperature system, velocity and temperature measurements in the sulfuric acid were made as well as measurements of the ice melting in the sulfuric acid.The mathematical model developed solved simultaneously the heat, mass and momentum equations numerically, utilizing the control-volume finite difference approach. The enthalpy method was adopted to track the moving boundary. Predictions made by the mathematical model were in close agreement with the results obtained by the physical model.The results from the mathematical model were further validated with experiments involving high temperature liquid metals. Specifically, data were obtained in an experimental setup involving (a) dipping silicon cylinders into high carbon liquid iron and (b) dipping nickel cylinders into liquid aluminum. Results from these experimental studies supported the predictions of the mathematical model."

This study focused on the chemical reactions between uranium tailings fluids and cores of subjacent bedrock from the site of the Cotter Corporation uranium mill at Canon City, Colorado. Actual and synthetic tailings fluids were forced through cores of bedrock. The pH of the effluent solutions was the dominant control on the behavior of dissolved species in solution. The pH depended on the presence or absence of calcite cement in the rocks. Calcite neutralized acidic raffinates and caused the precipitation of iron, manganese, aluminum, and possibly uranium. Chloride, sulfate, and sodium were not retarded upon passage through the cores, and sulfate and chloride should be useful as tracers of escaping tailings fluids. Zinc, copper, cobalt, nickel, uranium, and vanadium exhibited high mobility under acidic conditions and were strongly retarded at elevated pH. Calcium was released due to dissolution of calcite and ion-exchange. Magnesium was not retarded in concentrated solutions, but showed moderate retardation in dilute fluids. Potassium and ammonium both showed early retardation followed by breakthrough and mobility. The behavior of molybdenum was strongly dependent on pH, with retardation at low pH and mobility at elevated pH. Selenium was highly mobile under all conditions. Selenium should be a better tracer than molybdenum for many situations. Precipitation of carnotite appears to control the solubility of uranium and, possibly, vanadium. With the exception of the precipitation of aluminum and silica, all reactions were rapid.

he microstructure of galvanneal coatings formed on extra low carbon and interstitial free steel substrates has been characterized using electron microscopy (TEM and SEM) and x-ray diffraction. The coatings are found to consist of a mixture of gamma, delta and zeta phases, of which delta is the main constituent. The amounts of each phase influences the powdering resistance of the coating which was evaluated using reverse Olsen testing and 60" bending. For the three heat input conditions considered, IF coatings were always found to contain a significant amount of gamma and only those which retained zeta phase on the surface exhibited a satisfactory powdering resistance. In much the same way, ELC coatings with relatively thick gamma layers performed satisfactorily only when some zeta was retained. It was also found, however, that coatings with minimal zeta and gamma had an excellent powdering resistance. The latter coatings were produced under galvannealing conditions of lower relative heat input. These results indicate that in addition to the zinc bath composition, coating weight and galvanneal thermal cycle, the base steel chemistry also has an effect on the coating microstructure. Knowledge and control of all aspects of galvannealing is therefore essential to consistently produce acceptable coatings.

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan includes mining of the:unmineralised banded iron formation (BIF), Mt Whaleback Shale, Mt McRae Shale, Mt Sylvia Formation, and parts of the Wittenoom and Jeerinah Formation. With the exception of BIFs, all other units contain zones with varying amounts of sulphides and carbon û æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has a propensity to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulphide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Mining reactive shale at the Mt Whaleback mine must be undertaken in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Key tasks in the mining process include:100 per cent identification of blastholes that may contain reactive shale; 100 per cent correct loading of blastholes with specified blasting products; 100 per cent of reactive shale mined, hauled and dumped in designated overburden storage areas; 100 per cent containment and treatment of ARD water onsite; and ongoing research into ARD, self-heating and spontaneous combustion. Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments.

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in development of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. Final Report Volume III - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 94-L Bridge Conveyor describes the various noise control modifications to the bridge conveyor, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information.

Evaluation of raw materials for mineral wool is one phase of the Bureau of Mines broad program for the more effective utilization: of our mineral resources. The experimental work and test-evaluation results on several raw materials as useful components for the production of mineral wool are presented in this report. Samples from all sections of the United States, including copper slag from Tacoma, Wash., pebble phosphate slime from Florida, and granites from Massachusetts and Minnesota, have been blown into mineral wool successfully in the laboratory tests. Maximum conservation of the Nation's mineral and manpower resources requires maximum utility of those resources. Al though the domestic reserves of oil, gas, and coal are tremendous, judicious use of these fuels through the use of proper insulation will insure the highest thermal efficiency. The effectiveness of mineral wool as a heat-insulating material has assumed an increasingly important role in the national economy, and it has become a fuel saver in countless applications. The most immediate concern to many is the use of mineral wool in the home, which promotes uniform temperature and minimizes drafts by reducing heat transfer through the walls, ceiling, and floors. There are, however, many industrial and commercial uses that require large volumes of mineral wool each year.

Distal rhyolitic tephras from the Taupo Volcanic Zone are widespread in the Auckland urban region. Some are primary air fall or flow deposits but most are reworked. Their presence indicates potential hazard for the Auckland urban region from future eruptions of central North Island volcanoes and associated secondary effects. Geotechnical problems occur as a result of weathering of the tephras yielding sensitive materials.

Certain alloys1 that, as a result of quenching, are retained in the form of homoaeneous solid solution are known to increase in hardness and strength on standing at room temperature or on heating at slightly elevated temperatures. Other alloys2 that, on rapid cooling, are held in the form of homogeneous solid solution, as, for example, certain steels, behave in like manner on heating to somewhat higher temperatures. The observed increase in the hardness and strength of these alloys, referred to as " aging"' or as "secondary hardness," is widely accepted as being occasioned, either in whole or in part, by the precipitation in submicroscopic form of such constituents as were held in supersaturated solid solution as a result of cooling in excess of a certain critical rate. In earlier discussions of the cause of age hardening or secondary hardness, the question of the hardness of the precipitated particles does not appear to have been raised. At present, however, the general opinion appears to be that age hardening and secondary hardness are occasioned by the precipitation of hard particles within the supersaturated solid substance.3 The authors may be wrong in their belief that the last is a prevailing opinion. Yielding rock bolt support systems have been developed to accommodate ground movement in shifting ground such as in coal operations; in creeping ground such as salt, trona, and potash; and in swelling ground associated with some clays. These systems, designed to remain intact despite ground movement, should enhance mine safety and help contain costs in areas where rebolting of rigid non-yielding systems is typically required. Four such systems were tested in straight tensile pulls in the laboratory. They include the Slip Nut System from Dywidag Systems International USA, Inc., Ischebeck's bolt mounted Titan Load Indicator, Rocky Mountain Bolt Company's Yielding Cable Bolt, and a rock bolt installed variation of the yielding steel post developed by RE/SPEC Inc. The first two systems are currently marketed products and the latter two are prototype systems. Each system responds to load and displacement by yielding in a unique manner. All are designed to yield at predetermined loads. A description of each system and its yield function is provided. Each system was tested over its prescribed yield range in a test machine. At least five tests were performed on each system. Each system yielded and continued to provide support according to its design. Each shows promise for ground control use in shifting or creeping rock. This work helps to illustrate the comparative differences in performance between these specialized systems and the applications where they may be most useful.

Mond gas-producer tar, and, in fact, all tars obtained from the retorting of coal where steam and air are admitted to the retort, are of entirely different chemical composition to the ordinary coal tar made in the gas or coke works. These tars contain none of, the aromatic hydrocarbons - benzene, toluene, naphthalene, and anthracene, sought after by the ordinary coal-tar refiner.The distillation of Mond tar shows it to consist of phenols of high molecular weight, unsaturated hydrocarbons of high gravity and low viscosity, paraffin wax, and resinous substances of whose composition little is known.The physical properties of Mond producer tar are also peculiar. It has a "short," granular texture when cold, which might be likened to candied honey. It "dries" (hardens) when exposed in thin layers to the air, and, for a coal tar, it cannot be considered sticky. This latterò property, combined with the short texture, prevents its being used successfully for road-making or macadamizing.The drying properties and the paraffin wax contained in: this tar cause it to hold up large percentages of water, probably in the form of emulsion. When containing as much as 10% to 15% moisture it appears to be quite dry.
