The beginning of Colorado's mining industry is linked on one side with that of the Appalachian districts and on the other side with that of California, because the first discoveries were made by pioneers when on their way from Georgia to California. In the summer of 1849 a party of seven Georgians were taking a herd of thoroughbred horses across the continent to the Pacific coast. They reached Camp Lyon, on the Arkansas river, in October, and, meeting James Dempsey, a Government guide, they were persuaded by him that it was too late to cross the mountains that season. His advice was accepted, and, moving northward, they established a winter camp at the junction of Cherry creek with the Platte, close to the site of the city of Denver. Upon a sand-bar, lining the south side of the river, they built two cabins. During the closing months of 1849 they prospected the alluvial banks of Cherry creek, but they made no attempt to penetrate into the mountain canyons, near them, westward, for fear of the Indians.* They found gold in several places along Cherry creek, and particularly at a spot 16 miles up the stream from their camp. From the feathers of the wild geese that they shot they obtained quills in which they placed their gold-dust. This party of Georgians consisted of Dr. L. J. Russell and his brother, Green Russell, also A. T. Lloyd, G. W. Kiker, and P. H. Clark. Early in 1850 they crossed the main range of the Rocky Mountains by the Bridger pass and went on to California. The Dizon open pit mine of Benguet Corporation in western Central Luzon, Philippines has yielded some 182 000 t copper, and about 26 000 kg gold and 48 000 kg silver as by products since it started operation in November 1979. The 140 million tonne orebody is associated with a small quartz diorite porphyry stock emplaced in volcanic rocks on the basal slope of a stratovolcano complex as stockworks, fracture fillings and disseminated sulphide mineralization averaging 0.43% Cu, 0.93 g/t Au and 2.5 g/t Ag. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the mineralization that developed fairly distinct mineral assemblages within and around the intrusive. Post-ore volcanic activity later gave birth to an upward-flaring diatreme which broke out south of and adjacent to the orebody and partially destroying it. Subsequent volcanic activity buried the mineralized area along with the rest of the stratovolcano's surrounding slopes under a thick deposit of pyroclastic and laharic debris. Erosion eventually removed the volcanic cappings over Dizon and also exposed the quartz diorite porphyry stock which might have resulted in the truncation of a sizeable section of the Dizon deposit. The chain of stratovolcanoes that comprise southeastern Zambales range hugging the southeastern edge of the Zambales ophiolite is part of a west-facing volcanic arc that extends for some 300 km along the western margin of central and southern Luzon whose development has been correlated to the subduction in the Manila Trench located off the west coast of Luzon. Prominent WNW-trending lineaments that cut across the ophiolite appear to be splays of the Philippine Fault whose intersection with the Mt. Pinatubo stratovolcano complex might have localized the emplacement of a number of intermediate stocks along with the gold-rich porphyry copper mineralizations associated with some of them.

When in charge of the Glen don Iron Works, the importance of good methods of filling was forcibly brought to my attention, and it occurred to me that the first step toward the discovery of the best plans was the accumulation of exact information as to the distribution actually effected by various chargers; also, that something could be done in this direction by careful measurements in the furnace, to be afterwards recorded for comparison on drawings. The figures shown herewith have been prepared from such measurements, and nearly all of them refer to Glendon, where the fuel used was anthracite and the ore-mixture about threequarters of New Jersey magnetic ores and one-quarter of brown-ores from the vicinity of the works. Every occasion furnished by the blowing-in of furnaces was utilized, but the data accumulated rather slowly in this way; and, opportunity oEering to make special trials at no great expense, the figures from 2 to 7 were thus obtained. The trials were made by dumping a hopperful (6 barrows) of material at once into the furnace, and, when all the fuel of a round (12 barrows) had been put in, the profile of the upper surface was obtained by stretching a steel tape across the top on a diameter and at a known height. By measuring down from this with a graduated rod, the profile was easily obtained with sufficient accuracy, especial pains being taken to get correctly the crests of the ridges and the bottoms of the hollows, as many intermediate points being included as seemed necessary. This was repeated on another diameter when there was occasion. The same course was followed for the limestone and ore.

Located in North West Queensland, XstrataÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) is one of the largest underground mines in Australia with annual production exceeding six million tonnes of ore with average copper grades of three per cent. As at 30 June 2006, the Ore Reserve inventory totalled 87 Mt, with annual diamond drilling planned at >40 000 m in order to convert existing resources and test and define exploration targets. The role of the geology department within MICO is to collect, interpret and communicate relevant geological information to ensure the optimal extraction of ore. Routine underground inspections across multiple ore sources are undertaken and the information derived is then distributed to a range of professionals, operational personnel and management. The information is a æreal-timeÆ geological view for the stakeholders. Ongoing data collection and interpretation has developed a strong geological input to all mine planning processes within MICO. This has created strong synergies between mine planning professionals and a throughput benefit has been seen all the way to the concentrator. The MICO geological framework also provides avenues for a geological focus away from short-term production requirements, and as a result significant orebody scale observations and patterns have been realised that have led to an increase in the accuracy of geological and resource models. This has provided practical benefits for short-term scheduling and production, whilst enabling the realisation of long-term benefits that have a strong potential to increase the volume and value of the MICO resource. This paper will discuss the various mine geology contributions at MICO and illustrate some examples where mine geological input from graduate level has added significant value to the MICO business.

A broad zone of intra-plate volcanism occurs for some 3000 km along the E. Australian coastal regions, extending from far northern Queensland southwards to Tasmania, westwards to western Victoria, and into southeastern South Australia. The age range, taken over the whole region, extends from Eocene to Holocene. Wellman & McDougall (1974) recognised the occurrence of three distinct types of volcanic occurrences: (a) Lava field provinces, dominantly basaltic and commonly strongly undersaturated, but of variable size. Large lava fields are especially exemplified by the younger provinces in northern Queensland (e.g. Nulla, McBride), and western Victoria. (b) Central volcano provinces, in which a reasonably well defined volcanic edifice is discernable. Such provinces are built of mildly undersaturated to saturated mafic lavas, but are also characterised by felsic volcanism (and often substantial mafic and felsic intrusive phases). Examples are the Springsure-Minerva Hills province, the Tweed and Focal Peak Shields (southeastern Queensland to northeastern N.S.W.), and the Nandewars, Warrumbungles, and Canobolas volcanic centres (N.S.W.). (c) A single leucitite province in N.S.W. Wellman and McDougall (1974) were able to show that the central volcano provinces exhibit a remarkably regular southward age migration pattern, the calculated migration rate being 66 + 5 mm yr , and these authors interpreted this in terms of the northward passage of the Australian plate across a fixed 'hotspot' within the upper mantle. The leucitite province also fits this migration pattern. The lava field provinces apparently exhibit more erratic regional age distribution patterns, but Sutherland (1981) has interpreted the data in terms of a multiple 'hotspot' model. Quaternary warping and uplift of antiformal schist ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand, has resulted in recycling of alluvial gold from widespread, generally weakly auriferous, Miocene fluvial gravels that unconformably overlie the schist, into aprons of fan sediments along the range margins. Basement erosion during uplift has been limited and so gold input from sparse gold-bearing quartz veins in the schist has been relatively minor. In an eluvial cycle on the slopes of the ranges, chemical remobilization of gold occurs during oxidation and erosion of the Miocene sediments. The typically fine-grained (300 - 400 ¦m) gold undergoes chemical modification and grain size enhancement of up to two orders of magnitude, and much of it is redeposited in a large number of relatively small alluvial fans along the range margins. Groundwater mobility within the fans results in minor additional gold mobility and grain size enhancement. During range uplift, a small number of relatively large axial streams and rivers have developed in structural lows between growing antiformal folds. Axial streams 'gather' their flow from consequent streams draining the folds, and flow parallel to a range axis for some distance before cutting across it in an antecedent gorge. The axial streams rework alluvial fan sediments along the range margins, and transport mainly fine-grained gold from the fans along the ranges. This gold is redeposited where the axial streams emerge from a range in the neighbouring structural basin. Axial streams drain relatively large areas of range surface, and thus reconcentrate significant quantities of gold in a small number of relatively large fans and fluvial deposits. The processes of gold collection and re-deposition by axial streams are essentially the same, regardless of stream size. Coarse-grained gold produced by chemical remobilization, is more difficult to transport in fluvial systems, and thus remains in close proximity to eluvial environment where it was formed.

Pillar extraction carried out using various methods (split and lift, Wongawilli and Old Ben) involves the formation of narrow fenders (commonly 7 m of coal) formed by driving "splits" for lifting off with a continuous miner. The strata above a split and fender adjacent to the goaf consists of a cantilever beam (usually >3 m thick) that extends from the solid coal and bridges across the fender. Lifting off the fender from the split in safe conditions depends upon the bridging capability of the cantilever and the fender strength. The nature and competence of the immediate and near roof, the support capability of the coal fender and the presence of faults and or joints can adversely affect the bridging behaviour of the cantilever. Insufficient knowledge of these parameters can lead to extraction under dangerous conditions. Remnants of fenders ("stooks") also support the cantilever and their dimensions are critical to obtain regular caving and goaf falls. Stook area, goaf roof span and roof stand-up time after lifting can be related and only a relatively small increase in stook area of 10-15 m2 can lead to a significantly increased stand-up time, especially under a massive roof. Such conditions strongly influence the re- distribution of abutment stresses and can create increased outbye pillar loading. Based on detailed underground geotechnical investigations, it is concluded that strata caveability, roof cantilever behaviour, fender H:W ratio and remnant stook size are all critical parameters for successful and safe pillar extraction.

In the authors? experience inappropriate water management in hydraulic fill masses has been the root cause of most barricade failures. Inappropriate water management can lead to high water pressures, reduced effective stresses and increased barricade stresses (Kuganathan 2002). In addition the high hydraulic conductivity and non-plastic nature of most hydraulic fills makes susceptibility to piping failure (Cowling et al. 1987) a high possibility in many hydraulic backfills where a static water head is available. In order to avert both of these failure mechanisms it is essential to control the elevation of the phreatic surface within the fill mass. This is usually achieved through campaigned filling and resting periods. The duration of filling and resting periods are often estimated using some form of stope drainage simulator. Due to the random nature of many characteristics that influence the fill mass hydraulic conductivity, simulation of hydraulic fill drainage can be difficult. The high consequences of inaccurate phreatic surface estimates combined with the high variability in drainage properties often results in operators taking a conservative approach to this modelling. This conservative approach can lead to significant delays in the filling cycle which can have a major impact on the productivity of many hydraulic fill operations and can often results in an unnecessary movement towards capital intensive paste fill systems. This paper presents a water management technique which combines a simplified drainage model with in-situ monitoring to provide a rational approach to water management. With an accurate drainage model filling operations can be carried out at optimum efficiency without compromising safety. The implementation of this strategy has lead to a significant increase in filling rates at a number of Australian filling operations. A brief case study from one of these sites has been presented.

In presenting this brief historical perspective, it is not my purpose to address myself to the geophysicists, to most of whom the story is already well known. My objective is to draw the attention of those who hold the belief that geophysics is something new, typically twentieth century, to the fact that fundamentally, whether it was known by the name of geophysics or not, the science is an ancient and an honorable one. It began many centuries ago, and our modern civilization and its commerce owe a great debt to its founders, who today are likely to be overlooked and their names forgotten. The word "geophysics" means the physics of the earth, and is descriptive of a science that in many ways bears the same relationship to geology that astrophysics does to astronomy. When dealing with distant stars or deeply buried rocks, the experimenter cannot reach them to obtain samples, which can be taken to his laboratory for study. He therefore exhibits the resourcefulness of Mahomet in the mountain episode, and makes the terrestrial globe or the cosmic universe his laboratory, studying the effects of distant bodies on certain "fields of force" which come to him across interstellar space, or through the rocks that make our earth. The application of these- techniques of the physics laboratory to the study of the stars is the science of astrophysics, and to the investigation of the earth is geophysics. Yet the origin of the most valuable contribution to the world's trade and commerce ever made by geophysics remains lost in deep obscurity. Unknown even is the country wherein lived the unsung genius who invented the first geophysical instrument, the mariner's compass! Worse yet, it is not certain whether this invaluable guide of man had its beginnings in Europe or in Asia. A Chinese legend tells of the Emperor Hwang-ti, who attacked his enemy Tchi-yeou on the plains of Tehou-lou in the year 2634 B.C., whereupon the latter magically raised such a fog that the Emperor could not pursue the retreating troops. Not to be outdone, the mighty ruler constructed a chariot that indicated the cardi-

This paper presents some of the results obtained during the field season of 1919 while mapping, in detail, the stratigraphy of the Gogebic Range in Wisconsin. The detailed stratigraphic section for the range was first published, in 1919, by W. 0. Hotchkiss,1 State Gcologist of Wisconsin. The idea of the continuity of the definite succession thus established was the result of underground work in the productive part of the range in Michigan and Wisconsin, where most of the required data also were obtained. The bulk of the range in Wisconsin is heavily covered by drift; in fact, there is but one satisfactorily exposed section across the entire formation, few partial sections, and only scanty outcrops of any size. Evidently mapping of the detailed members of the formation could only be established at a few points; and if from these small areas the .unexposed portions were to be mapped by projection, the only apparent method for projection was straight-line interpolation modified or supported by data from the scanty outcrops and from test workings. It was found that by tracing a magnetic line, the position of which in the formation may be determined from test pits and outcrops, the projection of that member through the drift-covered areas can be accomplished. The magnetic line serves as a datum horizon within the formation to which reference may be made in correlating outcrops and ledge matter thrown from test workings. The foot wall is easily located also, and from the two datum horizons thus available and the known proportional thickness of the several members in the type sections, outcrops and artificially exposed ledges can be correlated by lithological characteristics. As a result, the tracing of magnetic lines became the basis of our work on the stratigraphy and we were able to carry the mapping of detailed members throughout the length of the range. It was found that the magnetic horizon at the base of the Tyler slate was most easily followed by the dip needle; that discontinuity caused by cross-faulting could be established; that folding along the strike could be detected in a repetition

In 1990, the Queensland mining industry had come to the conclusion that new safety and health legislation based on risk identification and control was required if the mining industry was to be effectively and efficiently regulated. In particular stakeholders in the coal mining industry had arrived at this opinion after the industry had suffered a number of major underground explosions over the 14-year period between 1972 and 1986. Also by 1990, a general consensus had emerged across both the coal and metalliferous mining sectors that mining industry was over regulated and, more to the point this over regulation did not encourage industry to identify and address the underlying causes that had led to a cycle of major mining accidents in the state. The prevailing opinion was that the prescriptive legislation left the ownership of risk management with the regulator and not with the mine operator. This paper discusses the background to the development of the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and the progress made in improving safety and health since the statutes came into force on the 16 March 2001. The paper discusses the issues that had to be addressed during the development of the legislation including the interaction with other legislation based on based on risk management principles that either overly or interface with the mining legislation. The effect the underground explosion at Moura No 2 in 1994 had on the final content of the new legislation is also considered. Health is often the neglected twin of safety and health legislation and the paper previews the health surveillance system being proposed in Queensland to ensure that health of mine and quarry workers is afforded the same priority as their safety. By increasing the structured management of occupational health problems in our mines there is an opportunity to make significant improvements in mine safety In conclusion the paper reviews the results to date since the introduction of the new mining safety and health legislation in Queensland on the 16 March 2001. Progress has been made and more is yet to be achieved

Prior to use of this model siphon finisher, the only means of evaluating metallurgical performance of the siphon finisher was by pilot plant studies. These are costly and require large quantities of material. A model siphon finisher and a test procedure which permits the evaluation of siphon finisher metallurgical performance has been developed. Metallurgical results between the model siphon finisher and pilot plant or commercial units show fairly good correlation. The upgrading of magnetic taconite concentrates by hydraulic concentration has been practiced for several years. In the 1940's, Braund1 used a multistage upflow classifier to upgrade magnetized magnetic concentrates. In present taconite plants, the SiphonSizer, marketed by Dorr-Oliver, Inc., has been particularly suitable for upgrading magnetic concentrates. When the hydraulic SiphonSizer is used to upgrade the concentrates in the finishing portion of the overall flowscheme, the unit will be called a siphon finisher to distinguish this application from classification. Prior to this work the only means of evaluating the metallurgical performance of the siphon finisher was by pilot plant studies which are costly and require large quantities of material. Therefore, it was desirable to develop a model siphon finisher and a test procedure which would simulate siphon finisher performance and require only small samples of material. This model would permit the evaluation of small samples such as drill core samples and be useful in evaluation of commercial siphon finisher design and performance. THE SIPHON FINISHER The siphon finisher, as shown in Fig. 1, is a tank equipped with a system of water jets which distribute the hydraulic water uniformly across the bottom of the vessel with an energy release for agitation in the teeter bed. The feed to the siphon finisher is intre duced through a feed well in the center of the unit. The silica and middling particles overflow a peripheral weir into the overflow launder. The magnetite fraction is discharged by a siphon or a modulated discharge valve. The molybdenite deposits at Climax, Colo., have recently attracted considerable notice, because of their great size, as compared with other known deposits of the same mineral. Climax station, on the Colorado Southern narrow-gage railway, was at one time the Fremont Pass station on the Denver & Rio Grande. It is 141/2 miles northeast of Leadville, and exactly on the divide between the headwaters of the Arkansas and Blue Rivers. Climax station is 11,300 ft. (3444 m.) above sea level. The working tunnel of the molybdenum mine is about 1 mile from the railroad, and 900 ft. above it, at an elevation of 12,200 feet. The climatic conditions are severe, and snow can be expected during any month of the year. This mountain, therefore, was well prospected, and the presence of a bluish mineral and a yellowish one resembling sulfur was known to the old prospectors. They thought for many years that the blue mineral was graphite, and it is difficult to say when it first became definitely known that it was molybdenite. Claims had been staked as early as 1896, but it is evident that the prospectors at that time were looking for gold. In 1902, several claims were acquired by H. Leal, who drove a tunnel about 900 ft. (274 m.) long, probably to intersect a fault, which shows on the surface, and was thought to be a possible gold carrier. THE molybdenite deposits at Climax, Cool., have recently attracted considerable notice, because of their great size, as compared with other known deposits of the same mineral. Climax station, on the. Colorado Southern narrow-gage railway, was at one time the Fremont Pass station on the Denver & Rio Grande. It is 1412 miles northeast of Leadville, and exactly on the divide between the headwaters of the Arkansas and Blue Rivers. Climax station is 11,300 ft. (3444 m.) above sea level. The working tunnel of the molybdenum mine is about 1 mile from the railroad, and 900 ft. above it, at an elevation of 12,200 feet. ELECTRICAL prospecting by potential methods has been applied to mining problems for some years and determinations of the depth to bed rock have been made, but so far as is known it has not been used previously in the solution of civil engineering problems, such as investigating the foundations of dams. During the past winter and spring the senior author has been engaged as consulting geologist in studying the site of a large darn on the upper Connecticut River and has had the satisfaction of introducing electrical prospecting to foundation problems. The valley across which the dam is to be built is underlaid by a deeply buried preglacial gorge which is filled with glacial deposits. An extensive drilling campaign was in progress, but the work was unusually slow and expensive on account of the number of boulders in the overburden. The necessity of speeding up the work was pressing and it was decided that much of the needed information could be obtained by geophysical methods. After investigating the various methods and conferring with the company engineers and with the consulting engineer, Albert Crane, a contract was made with the Schlumberger Electrical Prospecting Methods, and an observer with apparatus was sent to the dam site the first of April, 1928. The problem was to determine the depth to rock at various points in order to prepare a contour map of the bed-rock surface and outline the buried gorge in the vicinity of the dam site. Over one hundred determinations of depth have been made and the bed-rock topography, is now known in considerable detail. In addition, some information has been obtained about the nature of the overburden. The drilling has been continued; in fact, two additional drills have been put to work, and the electrical determinations have been checked at several points. At one of these the depth to rock given by the electrical work was 142 ft. and the drill found rock at 147 ft., an error of less than 4 per cent. The electrical work has also been checked by the geological study, and it has been found that when the electrical determinations are in agreement with the geological expectations they are probably reasonably accurate. The Similkameen mine is located about 100 miles east of Vancouver, British Columbia, and ten miles west of Princeton, where the mine personnel live. Princeton was the first town in the British Columbia interior, originally the home of Cree and Blackfoot Indians and later settled by men of the Hudson's Bay Company, miners, cattlemen, and others looking for gold. After gold, there were coal mines and then copper mines . The Granby Consolidated Mining Company, Limited, operated the Copper Mountain ore bodies from 1926 to 1930 and from 1937 to 1957, mining 34 million tons of about 170 copper ore, mainly from underground. In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the Ingerbelle property on the west side of the Similkameen River. Newmont then purchased the assets of Granby and formed Similkameen Mining Company to develop and operate the Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies on both sides of the Similkameen River canyon. The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies lie within rocks composed of andesite tuffs, agglomerates, and argillites. Chalcopyrite mineralization occurs as a dissemination. Original ore reserves were estimated at approximately 75 million tons grading 0.52% copper. Mining is carried out on a three-shift, seven-day-week schedule at a rate of about 60,000 tons of ore and waste per day with four 10 cu yd P & H 1900 shovels which mine and load a fleet of 100-ton Lectra Haul trucks. Among the unique features of the design and construction of the Similkameen project was the construction of 4. 5 miles (7. 24 km) of new Trans-Provincial No. 3 highway by the company to the specifications of the British Columbia Department of Highways. The old highway traversed the Ingerbelle pit area. Along the relocated highway is a 4, 000 ft (1219 m) long berm which conceals the mine pit. This area has been replanted and now looks like the original forest scenery. Another interesting feature is that the tailings from the concentrator flow by gravity over a 1000 ft (34% m) suspension bridge, which crosses the Similkameen River canyon then passes through a tunnel to the dam site, a distance of 59,000 ft (17,980 m) to the cyclone station. When the Copper Mountain ore bodies are mined, the ore will be transported by belt conveyor on a second suspension bridge across the canyon to the Ingerbelle concentrator. "INTRODUCTIONIn a jig, which is primarily a coarse mineral concentration device, the bed of mineral particles is pulsated with a stream of water resulting in the particles of different specific gravities. It operates in a cyclic manner – the jig cycle consists of four stages, namely, inlet, expansion, exhaust and compression. In the inlet stage the bed lifts up en masse. Near the end of the lift stroke the particles at the bottom of the bed start falling resulting in the loosing of the bed which, in turn, causes its expansion or dilation. During the third and fourth stages the particle resettle through the fluid, and the bed collapses back to its original volume. The pulsation and suction are repeated to bring about stratification with respect to specific gravity across the bed height. Various parameters affecting the stratification process include amplitude and frequency of pulsation, bed thickness, rate of hutch water flow, and feed characteristics. This paper first presents a review of various jigging theories and then describes a new approach to mathematical modeling of jigging employing the discrete element method.JIG MODEL BASED ON DISCRETE ELEMENT METHOD (DEM) APPROACHThe jig models based on DEM essentially involve tracking the position of each particle incrementally, applying Newton’s law of motion and a force displacement law at the contact. The model presented here is based on a three dimensional mathematical description of solid-solid and fluid-solid interactions. In this model, the force balance on a particle is extended to account for the effect of continuously varying fluid on the particle. The total force on each particle is made up of a known external body force, fluid particle interaction force and particle-particle and/or particle-wall interaction force. The fluid-particle interactive force is primarily made of drag and buoyancy. Di Felice’s correlation is used to evaluate the drag force. Solid-solid interaction is described by treating particles as discrete elements that are indestructible but interact with each other and any other elements present, such as walls, when they make physical contacts. A pair of spring and dashpot represents a contact The contact forces are computed from the amount and the rate of overlap of the particles at the contact. The motion of the particle is due to movement of the fluid, which transmits its energy through the particle-particle contacts. A computer program incorporating both the contact and the fluid model has been developed. It takes the operating parameters such as amplitude and frequency of the pulsating fluid, pertinent data concerning particle properties and the geometry of the jig bed as inputs."
