This paper applies the methods of statistical analysis to the interpretation of core analysis data of dolomitic limestone from the San Andres formation at Wasson and the Clearfork formation at Fullerton. Probability relationships are shown to connect the porosity and the permeability and the porosity and the fluid saturation. For example, the porosity-permeability relationship expresses the probability that a sample of porosity,f, will or will not be permeable. The over-all porosity frequency distribution of the reservoir together with the frequency curves of permeability (one for each class interval of porosity) provide a precise basis for computing the weighted average productive porosity of the reservoir for any assigned value of the minimum productive permeability. The probability that the permeability of a core specimen from Fullerton will exceed a given value appears to be dependent on the percentage porosity of the specimen, its void structure type (i.e., porosity in the qualitative sense), and the given value of the permeability. If continuous profiles of void structure type and porosity are available together with the appropriate porosity-probability of permability plots, the nes pay thickness may be estimated. The Invasion Index of a well is defined in terms of the porosity and permeability data. This index is suggested as a basis for comparing wells as regards their suitability as fluid-injection wells. Three problems of importance in the exploitation of limestone reservoirs may be stated as follows: 1. The determination of the productive porosity of the reservoir. The productive porosity is defined as f = fPVP/V [II in which Vp, is the volume of the reservoir that is sufficiently permeable to oil to give up an appreciable fraction of its original oil in place during the economic life of the reservoir; fp, is the arithmetic mean porosity of the permeable volume v*, and V is the total volume of the reservoir. 2. The determination of the number of feet of oil-bearing porous rock that will produce at a commercial rate into the well bore; i.e., the net pay thickness. 3. The choice of fluid-injection wells in a secondary recovery program. The ultimate recovery of the reservoir is proportiona1 to the productive porosity. The productive capacity of the well is proportional to the net pay thickness. The principal purpose of this paper is to show that the methods of statistical analysis when applied to core analysis data of dolomitic limestones offer a useful approach to the solution of these three problems, as well as others of importance in reservoir engineering. The use of these methods was suggested by the work of Jan Law.1

-4s a result of world economic conditions brought about by the European war and the consequent loss of European markets for Venezuelan crude, production in Venezuela decreased from 205,433,000 bbl. in 1939 to 186,134,000 bbl. in 1940, or 9.4 per cent. This decline interrupted a steady annual increase in production from the country, which had been continuous since 1932. The Maracaibo Lake Basin in western Venezuela accounted for 135,738,000 bbl. during 1940, or 73 per cent of the total, as against eastern Venezuela's production of 50,396,000 bbl., or 27 per cent of the total for the country. Corresponding figures for 1939 were 167,688,000 bbl., or 82 per cent of the total from the Lake Basin, and 37,744,000 bbl., or 18 per cent from the east. These comparisons indicate the increasing importance of the newer developments in eastern Venezuela, but it is unlikely that production from the east will ever exceed that from the west. In all, 429 new wells were completed in Venezuela during 1940 as compared to 438 in 1939. Of the 1940 completions, 411 were in proved areas and 18 were wildcats; 389 (95 per cent) of the exploitation wells drilled were producers, I was a gas well and 21 were dry holes, while 6 (33 per cent) of the wildcats drilled were producers and 12 (67 per cent) were dry; 263 of the exploitation wells and 4 of the wildcats were in the Maracaibo Lake Basin and 148 exploitation wells and 14 wildcats were in the east, mostly in the State of Anzoategui. Exploration of the light-oil areas in the Tia Juana and Lagunillas fields was con- tinued during the year with favorable results. Along the lake shore, drilling was confined principally to fill-in wells in the La Kosa, Tia Juana, Laguni!las and Bachaquero fields, although some important semi-exploratory drilling was done in the Pueblo Viejo area between Lagunillas and Bachaquero fields. The only other developments of particular interest in the west were the successful completion of a step-out well lying to the south of the former southern limit of Mene Grande field, which adds considerable proved acreage to that field; and the failure of two wildcats that were drilled near the Colombian border to determine whether the productive sands of the Petrolea field in the Barco Concession, Colombia, extend into Venezuelan territory. In the east no new fields were discovered during the year, although five wildcats were completed as producers. Three of these, Guario No. I, Jusepin-56 and LM-I (Leona), discovered important extensions to previously proved areas and the remaining two, Cantos-I and SPN-I (Socororo), were subsequently proved to have tapped productive sands of small extent and operations in these areas have been suspended. The greatest activity in the east was concentrated in the Oficina field, where 105 new wells were completed during the year and production was increased from 22,540 bbl. per day during January 1940 to 57,627 bbl. per day during December 1940. Important development work was also done in the Jusepin. San Joaquin and El Koble fields.

"The model has been developed to simultaneously predict both transformation product portions and mean ferrite grain size from the same common · principles as a result of the austenite decomposition during any cooling path of dual phase steels. The transformation products considered are polygonal ferrite, pearlite, bainite and martensite. The model is based on the classical equations of nucleation-growth theory and also contains some empirical parameters. The chemical driving forces for nucleation and composition of elements at the phase interfaces are derived by computation thermodynamics. The empirical parameters related to the model were determined on the basis of a series of austenite transformation dilatometric curves and grain size measurements for continuous and interrupted cooling of several steel types. The model is aimed to predict phase transformation in the complex cooling conditions of the run-out table of the hot strip mill at YOEST-ALPINE STAHL LINZ GmbH as a part of the computer aided system for prediction and on-line controlling of the mechanical properties of hot-rolled strip.IntroductionThe term ""dual phase steels"" is used to refer to a steel consisting essentially of a dispersion of martensite in a fine-grained ferrite matrix. These steels are of increasing technological interest since they provide a better combination of strength and ductility than any other conventional steel sheet material. The strength is important because it offers an opportunity to produce lighter components, while good ductility is needed to permit easy forming of components. It is generally recognized that martensite plays an important role in determining the strength level of dual phase steels. A full understanding of the role played by the phases in determining such characteristics requires investigating in more detail how to optimize the martensite level of such steels, while maintaining good ductility remains the subject of continued research in the industry."

Deformation processing of rapidly solidified powder alloys presents a technical challenge different in several ways from the processing of ingot based alloys. The metastable phases formed during planar flow casting of aluminum alloy 8009 (FVS0812) must be safe-guarded from high temperature excursions during processing to avoid decomposition; this restriction prohibits liquid phase sintering of particles during consolidation. The development of strong particle-particle adhesion, therefore, relies on the imposition of very large strains during forming operations to insure sufficient mechanical meshing of the aluminum particles and break-up of prior particle oxide boundaries. These strains are generally much greater than those required for metallurgical transformations in ingot based alloys. In an attempt to quantify the deformation required to improve interparticle bonding, the finite element method (FEM) was employed. Preliminary results which predict the metal flow and strain distribution in several workpiece configurations are discussed. These predictions are then correlated to measurements made on experimental subscale forgings. Lastly, experimentally measured quantities which reflect the degree of interparticle bondingg are related back to FEM model predictions.

DUE to wartime secrecy restrictions a large part of the technical information developed by government and industrial laboratories was withheld from distribution. Much of this information has now been released or "declassified" and reports of technical work carried out during the war in allied and enemy countries are also becoming available. Information on the latter subject has been augmented by the work of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Corps of the U. S. Army. Through the Joint Chiefs of Staff, rep¬resentatives of this Corps co-operated with the British Combined Intelligence Observations Subcommittee, and some of the observations were made by combined personnel of both groups. The U. S. Government has undertaken the indexing and abstracting of all of this information in the Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, a weekly bulletin which appeared first early in 1946. Other publications, such as the Bulletin of the British Iron and Steel Institute and The Metals Review of the American Society for Metals, provide abstracts of domestic and foreign magazine articles and papers presented to technical societies. However, they do not cover the industrial and government reports recently released by the Government nor the reports of the Army investigators hence the new bibliography is a welcome addition to our metallurgical library.

Most papers on xanthate have dealt with principles rather than practice. On the assumption that many millmen are interested in knowing where and in what manner the xanthates are being used in mills other than their own, this paper will summarize the results of a recent survey of North American plants. A brief background story and a description of the xanthates will be followed with the results of that survey; then a few observations will be made on storage, feeding, and ore testing. The first xanthate was made in 1822 by Zeise of the University of Copenhagen. With commendable scientific detachment (or perhaps a bad cold) Zeise ignored a more pervading quality of the substance and named it for its color, after the Greek word "xanthos," meaning yellow. During the first 80 years of its recorded existence xanthate found use only in small quantity as an insecticide; after the turn of the century there was some further demand for it in the vulcanization of rubber. It was not until 1922, by coincidence the centennial of Zeise's discovery, that C. H. Keller of San Francisco, seeking sul-phidizing agents, recalled xanthate in connection with his experience years earlier when he had seen this material used in Europe to combat grape phylloxera. His successful tests with the new flotation reagent culminated in the basic xanthate patent (U. S. 1,554,216) in 1925. In the minds of many metallurgists the introduction of xanthate as a flotation reagent is identified with the beginnings of alkaline circuits, the first use of chemical collectors, and the beginning of selective flotation. Actually, these preceded xanthate by a number of years. The alkaline circuit in lead-zinc flotation was introduced by Lyster as early as 1912. In 1922 Sheridan and Griswold made their momentous discovery (Timber Butte) that alkali cyanides and zinc sulphate effectively inhibited the flotation of pyrite and sphalerite in pulps made alkaline with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate. The use of lime to retard pyrite in copper flotation began within two years after Ralston directed attention to its possibilities in 1917. These were the beginnings of modern selective flotation, which was practiced successfully on copper-iron ores at Nacozari in 1922, and at Inspiration, Cananea, and others only shortly afterward. In the lead-zinc mills, selective flotation was of even greater economic importance at that time. The Sunnyside plant of U. S. Smelting, Refining, and Mining Co. used the process earlier than 1920, and Consolidated, Timber Butte, and others soon followed. As a chemical collector xanthate was relatively a latecomer, for the Corliss patent of 1917 covered the first of these, alpha-naphthylamine, and the Perkins patent of 1919 the second, thiocarbanilid. Most statistical measures of mineral exploration continued downward in 1986. Prospects in 1987, however, appear to have brightened for exploration as the overall economic health of the mineral industry improved. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) survey of US and Canadian firms documents the marked decline in US mineral exploration since the early 1980's. From 1981 through 1986, the total exploration expenditure by US firms declined by more than 73% (Fig. 1). Exploration expenditures by US firms declined by 66%%. US based professional exploration staffs were slashed by 70% (Fig. 2). Also, many firms have written off some reserves because of weak markets or have not delineated new reserves to replace production. The Canadian government reported that between 1981 and 1986 Canadian molybdenum re¬serves had declined by 30%, lead and zinc reserves by 20%, and nickel and copper reserves by 15%. The SEG survey also shows the immediate impact of the decline in the dollar on US exploration expenditures abroad. Between 1981 and 1986 the share of the exploration dollar spent by US firms outside of the country declined by nearly one-half and exploration acreage abroad declined by 69%. The downward trend of the last six years may finally be near the end as a leaner and more efficient minerals industry starts to gear up for a period of increased activity. An industry survey reported to Mine Development Bimonthly (Metals Economics Group) indicates that mining firms were expected to increase exploration expenditures in 1987 by at least 10% above 1986 levels. Worldwide expenditures for 1987 by companies covered by the report were expected to top $800 million. It is the first time since 1984 that an increase in exploration expenditures was expected. Also, the US Bureau of Land Management reported a 30% increase in new mining claims for fiscal year 1987 over fiscal year 1986. The bulk of the increase in claims was in states having intense gold exploration, particularly Washington and Oregon. Much of the optimism is undoubtedly due to the increases in metal prices that occurred in 1987. Some of these increases include gold, average price up about 20%; copper, average price up 24%; aluminum, average price up 26%; and nickel, average spot price up 20%. The SEG survey shows precious and base metals accounting for 89% of the exploration expenditures in the US in 1986, up 52% from 1981. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that 80% of US exploration activity in 1986 was directed entirely at gold (1986 Minerals Yearbook). Worldwide exploration plans indicate the continued dominance of gold exploration. New programs were announced for Ghana, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Major new exploration programs were also launched for lead-zinc sulfides in Morocco, platinum and palladium in northwest Brazil, rare earth minerals in Greenland, diamonds in Indonesia, and heavy minerals off-shore Australia. 1. A NEW CONTEXT FOR METAL INDUSTRY Producers and owners of industrial extractive sites are living hard times due to Environmental pressure and liabilities. This is valid whatever the region in the world, it is just a question of time. On one hand, the normative environmental pressure is increasing through more severe regulations and controls on all pollution sources and production materials. [ ] Furthermore, more impurities are extracted and captured, more the volume of the related wastes is increasing. But disposal costs are increasing, disposal areas for wastes are restricted, markets for wastes are limited and technologies for waste treatment are, most of the time, not available. On the other hand, for most of the extractive industries, the costs required to get access to refine primary raw material are killing the profitability of the industry. Definitively, a technological and economical breakthrough is ongoing: extractive industries have to increase their feed from secondary material and to be involved more and more with the recycling business.

The Old Man Range, south of Alexandra, in central Otago consists of a package of highly folded greenschist facies schist of the Wanaka lithologic association. The range is crosscut by several east to ENE-striking high angle gold-bearing quartz veins, (eg Whites Reef and Grays Reef), which were extensively worked in the late 1800s. The range is bounded on its east side by the Old Man Fault, which separates these rocks from generally flat lying and planar Caples Terrane schist. To the west of the Old Man Fault, about halfway up the range, a large subparallel, 100 m wide fault zone strikes NNW and appears to cut off the historic veins. The fault zone consists of highly sheared and folded rocks and numerous high angle cataclasites and centimetre-scale clay gouge zones. Hydrothermal alteration is not apparent and the individual faults and shears are clay altered, possibly due to weathering, without visible quartz veins. Gold, limonite pseudomorphs after pyrite and rutile are concentrated in some of the narrow cataclasites and gouge zones. These mineralised structures are texturally similar to the gold-bearing reefs and may be structurally related. It is postulated that the NNW-striking shear zone and ENE-striking veins may be a conjugate array formed during a period of Cretaceous normal faulting.

The year 1941 in the California oil industry was marked by an increased market demand, drilling activity, and production of crude oil. Although seven new oil fields and two gas fields were discovered during the year, additions to reserves from these discoveries, as well as extensions and revaluations of previous discoveries, were approximately 100 million barrels, as against estimated withdrawals of 230,233,000 barrels. The year was remarkable for the very great increase in domestic demand for all products, which more than compensated for the loss in shipments to Japan, which averaged 60,041 bbl. Per day during 1940. Demand in terms of crude during 1941 was 648,967 bbl. per day as against 632,647 for the same period in 1940. This abnormal increase in demand is due to increased industrial activity, and especially increased railroad activity. Gasoline consumption for 1941 was 241,011 bbl. per day as against 217,744 in 1940. Demand for fuel oil increased from 259,806 bbl. per day in 1940 to 285,896 in 1941, and caused a withdrawal from stocks of more than 7,473,000 barrels. During 1941, total oil storage declined 9,153,000 bbl., but additions to storage of 1,754,000 bbl. of light oil and light oil products were offset by a withdrawal of 10,907,000 bbl. of heavier products. Production during the year is estimated at 230,233,000 bbl. as against 222,784,386 bbl. for 1940. TraNsportation For a short time, California was affected by lack of transportation due to the diversion of tankers. This shortage affected the movement of oil from the Sari Joaquin mated to the refineries, since a large percentage of this production is moved to the coast through pipe lines, and thence by tankers to Los Angeles and San Fran-,iSco, Return of the tanker fleet, which may be temporary, indicates that there is a possibility of ample supplies of petroleum products in the Pacific Northwest. Drilling Activity Contrary to general opinion, drilling activity increased in 1941 over the pre-vious Year, 942 wells being completed in 1941 as against 890 in 1940, an increase Of 6 per cent. This increase was due to the increased demands for fuel oil, and also to the decreased drilling costs, which made many former marginal locations economic. The main activity caused by increased demands for fuel oil was in the Mt. Poso, McKittrick, Midway and Santa Maria Valley oil fields. Dry-hole footage in 1941 was 655,354 ft. as against 583,537 ft. for 1940. Here densification up to a relative material density of 80 %, i.e. a compact density around 1100 kg/m3, has proven to be advantageous. Coal is compacted by stamping, if the so-called stamp charging process applied. Compacting of the coal by pressing is practised in case of the cokemaking with so-called heat-recovery ovens. Stamped and pressed coal cakes require over the cake volume uniform high density and mechanical stability. Besides the aspects of the coal selection, the efficiency of the process is mainly determined by the operating parameters compacting time and compacting energy for coal cake making. At the Department for Mechanical Process Engineering & Solids Processing of the Technical University Berlin the two sub-processes of densification and strengthening during stamping and during pressing are theoretically and experimentally investigated using specially developed lab-scale compacting test units and a strength test device. Describing cake density in terms of coal properties for a given coal and measured compacting energy input then leads to a compacting equation with the so-called Stampability as the integral model parameter for the stamping process. For the pressing process the cake density can be calculated with the measured compacting pressure and the Compressibility factor, respectively. Investigations were carried out to provide evidence of a significant influence of coal type, coal surface moisture, coal granulometric and mechanical properties on the densification process. The overall objective of the work is to establish a comprehensive mathematical model on the compacting behavior of large coal bulk quantities and the optimization of the compacting processes by stamping and by pressing. An analysis of coal slurry pipelines was presented in our May 1976 study, Route Specific Cost Comparisons: Unit Trains, Coal Slurry Pipelines and Extra High Voltage Transmission (4]. The present study extends that analysis. The earlier work included technical and economic cost descriptions of the black Mesa and ETSI pipelines as well as some hypothetical pipeline routes. Water problems, safety and environment, required resources, and labor impacts were discussed at some length. Additionally, pipeline impacts on competing railroads, slurry-rail comparisons, and cost escalation. were analyzed. The difference in pipeline profitability to an owner-operator versus a promoter-builder was suggested. These aspects are not redone in this study. Here, we present a synopsis of the previous results and a general statement of coal slurry pipelines. Extensions of the arguments are presented where they appear warranted. New material is developed in the area of pipeline branching and tapping. This would appear necessary if slurry pipelines are to function as more than private lines; if they are, for example, to be responsive to common carrier requirements.

This paper presents an investigation of some alternatives, and improvements to timber posts and cribs. The purpose is to find a cheaper, better, easy to install, and effective means to replace or improve them. Selection of supports needs to take account of several factors. These factors include the mechanical behavior of the support, technical feasibility, and cost. In this paper a variety of supports are compared on these bases. Particular advantages and disadvantages of those supports have been determined through published material and a testing program. A broad evaluation of a number of specific groups of supports is presented. Included in this evaluation are timber posts and cribs, steel friction props and several, newer developments such as the Micon Yield Capsule and the Super Post. Another support that will be briefly discussed is steel-fiber-reinforced concrete. Particular emphasis will be placed on the Micon Yield Capsule and the Super Posts on which preliminary testing has been carried out. The testing results are presented in detail. The shortcomings of the test procedure are pointed out and some new ideas to improve the testing in the future are proposed.

The second annual RMCMI Mine Rescue Performance Evaluation was held in conjunction with the 1993 RMCMI Convention at Beaver Creek. [ ] Six teams participated in this year's evaluation; BHP Minerals, Navajo Mine, Fruitland. NM; BHP Minerals - LaPlata Mine. LaPlata, NM; BHP Minerals - San Juan Mine. Waterflow. NM; The Coteau Properties Company - Freedom Mine, Beulah. ND; Cordero Mining Company, Gillette, WY; and The Falkirk Mining Company - Falkirk Mine. Underwood, ND. The Western Energy Company of Colstrip, MT was represented through observers and evaluators. [ ] Realistic industrial related scenarios, closely simulating the stress of actual rescue incidents, were provided by members of the Eagle Valley Ambulance Service. Five different scenarios were presented to each team on the first day of the evaluation and three on the second. Each team was given the pertinent information to solve the problem as they assembled at the scenario site. The scenarios were going on simultaneously and each team was unaware of the circumstances until they entered the scene. Interested onlookers were afforded the opportunity of viewing the actual simulated rescue operations as they occurred. The teams received valuable pointers and direction from the ream of evaluators following each scenario. They were are also given the opportunity to observe the other teams in action and to meet with the members of all the teams to share information and ideas during team meetings per the predetermined schedule. The primary goal is to recognize current rescue skills, knowledge, and abilities of participating teams. In doing this, each team was provided with individual evaluations and a path for improvement as needed. Each team was recognized for their efforts at an awards breakfast on the final day of the evaluation. New innovations in rescue equipment were introduced and demonstrated for interested teams following the awards program. The importance of progressive training such as what we are witnessing at evaluations during the RMCMI conventions cannot be stressed strongly enough. These teams are the providers of immediate rescue and medical care for victims of accidents at their respective properties. Every mining operation has the potential for very serious accidents due to immense size of equipment and mining logistics. These rescue teams must be prepared to act with the most immediate, professional and knowledgeable actions to save lives and prevent further injuries. Safety is a primary concern of every mining operation and the mine site rescue team is an integral part of that safety effort. For several decades, the deep, gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand basin have been mined predominantly according to layouts characterised by longwalls with strike pillars to provide regional support. During the past few years, a new generation of mining layouts has been introduced. These layouts are based on the concept of grid-type, scattered mining with dip pillars for regional support. As the extraction of the gold reefs extends to depths below 3500 m, the hazards associated with mining at these ultra-depths are expected to increase to unacceptable levels. Therefore, the question arises as to, which of the currently applied mining layouts is most acceptable for the economic and safe extraction of an ultra-deep orebody. The purpose of this paper is to describe a research investigation carried out to evaluate the degree of acceptability, from the rock engineering view point, of four currently used mining layouts for application at a depth-range of between 3500 and 5000 m. Les dernières années ont vu la naissance d’une nouvelle génération de dispositions de mine. Ces dispositions sont basées sur le concept d’extraction type grille, éparpillée, avec des piliers au pendage pour le support local. Comme l’extraction des filons d’or va à des profondeurs en dessous de 3500m, il faut s’attendre à ce que les risques associés à l’exploitation à ces profondeurs extrêmes atteignent des niveaux inacceptables. Par conséquent, la question se pose de savoir laquelle des dispositions de mine couramment utilisées est la plus acceptable pour l’extraction rentable et sans danger d’un gisement ultra profond. Le but de l’étude présente est de décrire les recherches exécutées pour évaluer le degré d’acceptabilité, du point de vue d’ingénierie de roche, de quatre dispositions de mine couramment utilisées pour application à un rayon de profondeur entre 3500 et 5000m. Die tiefen, goldträchtigen Riffs des Witwatersrandbeckens wurden über einige Jahrzehnte hindurch vorwiegend nach jenen Layouts abgebaut, die von Langfrontstreben mit Schlagpfeilern charakterisiert waren, um regionale Unterstützung zu gewährleisten. Während der letzten Jahre wurde eine neue Generation von Grubenlayouts eingeführt. Diese Layouts basieren auf dem Konzept der Rasterfeld-Art, gestreuter Bergbau mit Neigungspfeilern für regionale Unterstützung. Es kann erwartet werden, daß auf Grund der Tatsache, daß sich die Extraktion der Goldriffs auf Tiefen unterhalb 3500 m verlagert, die Gefahren, die mit dem Bergbau an diesen Ultratiefen verbunden sind, sich auf ein nicht annehmbares Niveau erhöhen. Folglich erhebt sich die Frage, welche der gegenwärtig angewendete Abbaulayouts für die ökonomische und sichere Extraktion eines ultra-tiefen Erzkörpers am annehmbarsten ist. WILSON and the authors)] Ground Movement Adjacent to a Caving Block in the Climax Molybdenum Mine STEPHEN ROYCE•-It is interesting to note from B, Fig 2, how closely the subsidence limits approximate to the 60° angle of draw, which is so commonly found to rule in large scale rock subsidence. The tension cracks shown at B are commonly found in the initial stages of subsidence movement and spread like a halo about subsidence limits as movement extends. These tension cracks usually grow into escarpments later on. Apparently from the illustrations and description given, a system of vertical fractures is the predominating weakness in the wall rock at Climax, and therefore both tension cracks and escarpments are prevailingly vertical in attitude. The illustrations in Mr. Vanderwilt's article seem to conform to the general rule that yield by subsidence is heralded by tension cracks which foreshadow the appearance of the subsidence scarps which are both described in the paper and shown in Fig 2. The difference between the B side and the A side of Fig 2 is apparently caused mainly by the vertical fracturing which controls subsidence at Climax as compared to the relatively homogeneous rock formation at A upon which the original figure in Peele's Handbook was based. The draw at B is exactly 60°, while the draw at A is a little flatter. The influence of the vertical fractures explains the difference. The surprising feature is the relatively small deviation from the general 60° draw line, which is about the average of rock subsidence experience. The influence of local fracture systems, faults and bedding in controlling subsidence all the way from extremely low angles of draw to vertical is rather fully discussed in the Peele's Handbook article referred to. The more illustrations of subsidence there are published the better will be our knowledge. The general principles are pretty well established. The wide local differences reflect the effect of local conditions. This paper is a very valuable contribution to the subject, and for the benefit of the mining industry, it is to be hoped that there will be many more such clear and concise presentations. Particularly block caving is apt to be of greatly increasing importance in the future of a mining industry that must meet high labor costs. More examples of block caving from small scale to large scale operations like those at Climax will serve a vital need. JOHN W. "The static recrystallization behaviour of Ti-Nb microalloyed high-strength steel during hot deformation was studied by conducting double-hit hot compression experiments using a Gleeble-3500 thermomechanical simulator. The effects of deformation temperature, strain rate, strain, and initial austenite grain size on the static recrystallization fraction are discussed. The static recrystallization kinetics were modelled, and the results show that the static recrystallization fraction increased with deformation temperature, strain rate, and strain and interpass time. The static recrystallization activation energy Qs was 326.05 kJ mol-1. Comparison of the experimental results and predicted results indicates that the effects of deformation parameters on the static recrystallization in multistage hot deformation are significant. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental results. IntroductionIn hot-forming processes, complex microstructures are often induced by multiple hot deformation mechanisms (Zhang et al., 2014; Liang et al., 2015). The softening behaviour during hot processing has generated considerable interest because component properties are influenced significantly by the corresponding microstructural evolution (Wu et al., 2010). It is well known that dynamic recrystallization (DRX); metadynamic recrystallization (MDRX), which occurs by the growth of DRX nuclei during intervals of deformation; and static recrystallization (SRX), which occurs by nucleation and growth during the intervals of deformation, can significantly alter the austenite grain size (Chen et al., 2015. Chen, Sui, and Cui, 2014; Mao et al., 2014). The long interpass times allow complete SRX to take place if the steel is being rolled above the interpass recrystallization stop temperature (Tnr), i.e. in the absence of carbonitride precipitation (Siciliano, 2000). In recent research, microalloying technology coupled with new-generation thermomechanical control processing (NG-TMCP) has proved efficient in achieving the proper balance between strength, toughness, ductility, and formability by means of a suitable combination of chemical composition and thermomechanical treatment parameters (Shukla et al., 2012; Bandyopadhyay et al., 2011). The alloying elements Nb, V, Ti are widely used in high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel to achieve the desired strength and toughness properties with solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening, grain refinement, and dislocation strengthening (Opiela, 2014; Chen and Yu, 2012). The wide applicability of alloying elements in HSLA steel is due to the fact that heat treatments are not required after forming of the parts, which results in time and cost savings."
