The fact that iron expands when heated, until fusion takes place, and that molten iron is consequently less dense than solid iron of the same grade, is now universally admitted. It was proved by the extensive experiments of Mr. Thomas Wrightson, reported in the Jownal of the Iron and Steel Institute (1890, No. 1, p. 72, and 1891, No. 1, pp. 75, log), and, in a manner, is illustrated in heavy founding by the shrinkage 'of the molten metal, which must be " fed " in order to obtain solid castings. This decrease in volume requiring " feeding" while the metal is still liquid I call " shrinkage," applying the term " contraction" to the decrease in volume which takes place after solidification, while the iron is cooling to atmospheric temperature. The light-work founder, not having the opportunity to make heavy castings, in which shrinkage can be observed, is apt to confound the two; but they are in fact distinct, and are separated by an act of expanion, which takes place at the moment of solidification. The fact of this expansion was first practically demonstrated by Mr. John R. Whitney, of Philadelphia, Pa., whose experiments are recorded in the National Car and Locomotive Builder of May, 1889. Experiments recently made by the writer indicate that there is a constant relation between this expansion and the preceding shrinkage and forcibly demonstrate the necessity of " feeding " a casting to make its interior solid. This is a matter with which all makers and users of castings have experienced difficulty. The founder being heretofore unable to define correctly the principles involving the urgent necessity of " feeding " has failed to impress the moulder with its importance in making sound castings.

A number of investigators have noted the importance of various precipitation reactions on the properties of commercial-purity beryllium.1-5 Carrabine, for example, has demonstrated the interaction of iron and aluminum on the mechanical properties of hot-pressed polycrystalline beryllium.6 He considered the determining factor on elevated-temperature properties to be a reversible AlFeBe, precipitation reaction which could be directly related to the Fe/Al impurity ratio of the beryllium. Any aluminum in excess of the stoichio-metric amount required to form A1FeBe4 was presumed to remain primarily in the grain boundaries. We have observed, by transmission electron microscopy, such a grain boundary effect after various heat treatments of beryllium sheet. The starting material in this investigation was bare-rolled beryllium ingot sheet (0.001 to 0.005 in. thick), in contrast to the hot-pressed powder utilized by Carra-bine. It should be noted from the ingot sheet analysis shown in Table I that the Fe/Al weight ratio was near unity which would provide some free aluminum although the total aluminum and iron content was still small. Fig. l(a) shows some aluminum or aluminum-rich precipitates in the grain boundaries of a beryllium foil which had been quenched from 1200°C into brine at -TPC. Similar grain boundary precipitates were found, particularly at grain boundary intersections, in other samples quenched from 1100° and 1000°C. The length of annealing time at these elevated temperatures did not appear to substantially alter the amount of grain boundary precipitates, thus attesting to their relative insolubility. In any line of human activity logical handling requires an amount of attention to each phase that is in keeping with the importance of that phase. In the complex and rapidly changing field of modern ferrous metallurgy it is difficult to allot the proper degree of attention to the various subjects, and it is not surprising that one or more subjects of major importance should for a time be neglected. Bessemer steel is a good example of a neglected subject. It is largely taken for granted, inferior physical quality is assumed for it, and there is a • lack of interest in its technical development and commercial application. Availability of supply is limited. In spite of this technical indifference, limited source and lack of commercial exploitation, bessemer steel constitutes a large volume of tonnage in daily use. There is a fairly prevalent idea even among technical people that bessemer steel survives mostly because of low cost and by reason of a dwindling residue of applications sufficiently common to permit of its use. The difference in cost between bessemer and open-hearth steel is governed largely by the relative cost of manufacture of pig iron and the market price of steel scrap. During the past four years there have been long periods of time during which the price of steel scrap was low enough so that open-hearth steel was considerably lower in manufacturing cost than bessemer. As to application, it may be pointed out that thousands of tons of this material in the form of bessemer screw steel are applied for moving parts in automotive and other equipment. Some forging work and considerable heat-treating, particularly carburizing, is performed on this grade. The application of scientific methods to the investigation of natural laws and to the conduct of the useful arts which are founded upon them, is year by year mitigating the asperity and enlarging the outcome of human endeavor. More notably, perhaps, are these the facts in that system of productive and constructive arts of which engineering is the general name. In metallurgical engineering especially, within the period of our own recollection, how rapid has been the rate and how wide the scope of progress: the scientific discovery and mining of metalliferous veins; the economical separation and reduction of ores of every grade; the production and regulation of high temperatures; the varied improvements in the manufacture of iron, in saved heat and work, in uniformity and range of products; and, most important of all, the creation and the utilization, to be counted by the million tons a year, of the cheap constructive steels. Wonderful as this range and degree of development may appear to the public eye, the close and thoughtful observer must, nevertheless, conclude that neither the profession nor the craft of engineering may congratulate themselves too complaisantly, but that they should rather acknowledge to each other the embarrassing incompleteness of the union between engineering science and art. There is a small school of philosophers whom we may designate as original investigators, men who come close to nature, who search into first principles, and who follow that scientific and therefore fruitful method by which the relations of matter and force are discovered, classified, and brought within the reach of practice. These wonderful men do not indeed create the laws of nature, as they sometimes almost seem to, but they go up into the trembling mountain and the thick darkness and bring down the tables upon which they are written.

THIS paper is the outcome of an extended investigation carried out in association with Dr. L. Slater. The inquiry had been continued in various directions and a number of results are quoted from an investigation recently completed by S. H. Jenkins. In projecting the work some five years ago, the author had in view a general attack on the problem of the spontaneous combustion of coal from an angle that had received little attention. The basic idea was to obtain a "slow motion study" of the active combustion of coal. This included an examination of the conditions prevailing in a mass of coal at the moment when active combustion ceases. It was thought that, if the factors governing the extinction of combustion in coal could be definitely established, it might offer an explanation of the manner in which the spontaneous combustion of coal originates. The inquiry arose from a detailed study of the properties of fusain that the author began in 1918. Fusain seemed to possess characteristics quite distinct from the coal with which it was associated, for if it were collected into a heap and one portion were heated by a small flame the combustion would traverse the whole mass. This combustion was not accompanied by smoke and passed slowly through the heap of material. Later, it was found that coals, including anthracites, would behave in a similar manner provided they were in the form of powder and that the particles were smaller than a certain size. The limiting size of particles is a definite characteristic of the coals investigated. In view of the fact that fusain exists with coal in a state that enables it to undergo this particular form of combustion, it must be assumed, sometimes, to playa definite part in the spontaneous combustion of coal in the goaf (waste).

In sizing of wet coal by the horizontal vibrating screen, screen openings to be used is much restricted, because coal is sticky and its bulk density is little. The electrically heated screen and other various types of screen had been tried to screen raw coal and coal as raw materials at a few mm. However, they failed to realize satisfactory results. On the other hand, fine sizing of coal is requested by many fields. For example, raw coal is desired to be screened at the fine rate, before being fed to the coal preparation control system in order to transport undersizes as unprepared coal particles and to reduce load in coal preparation waste water treatment system.1) Coals fed to the fluidized bed boiler also should be sized at a few mm. Regardless of many requests on fine sizing of coal, it seems that there are many cases to omit the basic screening process, because the screening is very difficult on a industrial scale. Size control as pretreatment of coal as raw materials is presented as one of the basic screening processes. In 1979, Kinki Industrial Co., Ltd. and Nippon Steel Corporation jointly succeeded in developing the vertical centrifugal screen. Closed -circuit crushing system by the use of this screen has operated actually at N.S.C, Hirbhata .Works, and realized the anticipated result. Consequently, this system has established the position as the most basic technology in the coal preparation. 2), 3), 4) This system has been also introduced to Nakayama Steel Works, Ltd. in 1982. This system termed the CPC (Coal Preparation Control) Process has been operated smoothly in both N.S.C. and Nakayama. Reported herein is the practical application of the vertical centrifugal screen termed V3-Separator. (V3 means vertical, versatile and vibration.)

There are found in nature upward of II2 minerals containing antimony, but only a few of them, listed in Table I, can be considered as antimony ore-forming minerals. Stibnite (Sb2S3), antimony sulphide or glance, is the principal ore of antimony. The oxide ores—cervantite, kermesite, valentinite, sernarmontite—occur sparingly in nature. Dry methods are generally adopted for the extraction of the metal. Electrometal-lurgical methods have had much attention in America and Germany and have not yet found, on economic grounds, practical or extended application, except in a few places. During recent years, treatment of the poor grades of the ore, especially sulphide, by ore-dressing methods, has commanded some attention and been adopted at a few plants. The impure sulphide of antimony, resulting from the liquation process, is called lLneedle," "liquated" or "crude" anti- mony, and the refined metal itself is called antimony "regulus." The different processes for the treatment of antimony ores are shown in the diagram of Fig. I. Liquation of Crude Antimony The first step in the smelting of antimony is a simple one, the process of LLliquation," which produces crude or needle antimony. Ores containing $ 50 per cent Sb are used in the liquation process for the production of crude. The temperature required for liquation is between 550' and 600°C. Ores to be liquated are broken to about walnut size. If the pieces are larger than this, the low heat used will not penetrate' effectively, and if they are smaller the ore tends to pack too closely for adequate penetration. A packed charge also prevents the free escape of the fused sulphide. Different forms of optical pyrometers are discussed and the advantages and disadvantages of the different types for measuring high temperatures are pointed out. These advantages and disadvantages lead to the selection of the disappearing-filament type of optical pyrometer for most work. Attention is directed to the necessity for the use of a monochromatic screen with a pyrometer, which leads to a discussion of the meaning and use of the effective wave length of the screen. Methods of calibrating the optical pyrometer are outlined and it is shown that an optical pyrometer can be calibrated just as definitely as any other temperature-measuring device. Accuracy tests are included, in which it is shown that excellent results can be obtained by even untrained or slightly trained observers with this form of optical pyrometer. The various corrections that are necessary in this kind of work are indicated, including corrections for stray light, for absorption of windows, of smoke, and so forth. The troublesome problem of measuring the temperature of bodies that do not radiate like a black body is discussed and the corrections for reducing such readings to the true temperature are given for a number of different materials. Introduction The fundamental idea of temperature depends upon our temperature sense and bodies are said to be hot or cold depending upon the reaction of our hands or some other part of the body to the heat from the source investigated. For measuring the temperature some instrument must be devised, since the temperature of the source studied is apt to be so hot as to greatly injure any part of the body that comes near it, to say nothing about direct contact with it. THE study of the relations between gases and metals is one of perennial interest to all who are connected with the production of high-grade metallurgical products. The data reported here are the outcome of work of which the object is to determine the effects of dissolved gases upon the properties of metals and to gain a more detailed knowledge of the reactions between gases and molten metals, particularly iron, under definitely controlled conditions. We have attempted to reduce our margin of error by dealing with relatively large quantities of metal, from 4 to 13 lb. (2 to 6 kg.), and keeping the ratio of refractories to metal as small as practicable. The ingots produced are large enough to provide adequate material for making determinations of magnetic and other physical properties. In choosing the bell-jar type of furnace we were influenced by the results of considerable experimentation along the same general line which indicated that, for the scale or which we were to work, it was important to have the furnace structure independent of the vacuum enclosure. The use of a bell-jar surrounding the entire furnace accomplishes this and also gives great freedom of observation during operation and ready accessibility for the replacements which are necessary after each run. Our choice of analytical method was made in the light of the results secured by H. M. Ryder, who used a method similar in principle for the analysis of very small quantities of gas extracted from strips of metal heated electrically in high vacuum. We have presented some selected preliminary experimental data as being illustrative of the quantity and nature of the gases which occur in iron of different origins, but do not urge any hypothesis at this time.

Dimitri Konstantinovitch Tschernoff, was horn in Petrograd, Russia, on Nov. 1, 1839, and died in Yalta (Crimea) in the south of Russia, on Jan. 2, 1921. He obtained his early education in the Russian Gymnasium, corresponding to the American high school, and in the Technologic Institute. On graduation from this Institute in 1858, he was engaged as a professor of geometry and algebra and later became a librarian and superintendent of the museum in the same Institute. He also attended lectures in the mathematical physics section at the Univrrsity of Petrograd from 1859 to 1862. In 1866, Professor Tschernoff left the Technologic Institute and entered the employ of the Obouchoff steel plant, founded in 1863 for the manufacture of guns. Here he did his most important work on the heat treatment of steel, its crystallization and metallography. In 1880, he left the Obouchoff plant and went to the south of European Russia, where he discovered and developed some rock-salt mines. This enterprise brought him a rather large fortune. In 1884, he returned to Petrograd and during the next four years held several prominent positions in government departments. In 1899, he became professor of metallurgy in the Michael Artillery Academy, and retained that position until the time of the Russian Revolution. In 1902, Professor Tschernoff was elected an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. In September, 1917, Professor Tschernoff was sponding his vacation, as usual, in the city of Yalta (Crimea) in the south of Russia, with his wife and one of his daughters. The revolution progressed so rapidly that they were unable to return to Petrograd, and were compelled to stay in Yalta without provision for the winter season. Suffering from hunger. and lack of sufficient clothing, and deprived of his books, Tschernoff nevertheless continued his studies and gave a number of lectures on steel at the Polytechnic Institute. At the same time he worked hard on some. mathematical problems. His health broke down through long-continued under-nourishment. His works in the metallurgical field are well known to the students of metallurgy; good abstracts of his most important papers were published in Revue de Metallurgie (1915, pp. 829-882) in commemoration of his 75th birthday.

This paper gives a brief description of an investigation made several years ago on the diffusion of zinc into copper. The material for that study was furnished in the form of thin copper strips coated with zinc. The result was required rather quickly and at not too great an expense, and especially information was desired as to the rate at which zinc would diffuse from the zinc coating into the copper and the temperature at which the operation should be carried out. A study of the requirements of this problem indicated that the solution might be secured by means of six determinations. This is the smallest number that will give the information desired and, at the same time, furnish checks on the accuracy of the determinations which justify an abbreviated experimental program. This does not count a preliminary test which was designed to give some idea of the correct temperature to use. The minimum number of temperatures that can be used is two. Knowing the rates of diffusion of zinc into copper at two properly chosen temperatures, it is possible to calculate the rate for any other temperature, and also to check the accuracy of the determination by means of the heat of diffusion, which is calculated from the effect of temperature on the rate of diffusion. The minimum number of determinations at any one temperature is three. The amount of diffusion which occurs at a fixed temperature is definitely related to the time of diffusion, so that by determining the amount of diffusion for three different time intervals, this relationship may be established and possibly a check on the accuracy may be secured. This accounts for the six determinations or experiments, and suggests the logical plan of the work. The check used here is not generally applicable to diffusion phenomena, but it seems to hold closely enough for the limited amount of diffusion in this investigation to justify its use. The samples used were 5 to 6 mils thick and about 1 in. square. They were placed between iron blocks and set in the hot zone of a nichrome furnace which had been brought to the desired temperature Time was taken from the moment the samples reached the furnace

THE copper smelter and refinery of The Messina (Transvaal) Development Co. Ltd., at Messina, South Africa, was erected in 1920 and 1921, but initial operations were deferred until late in 1922 on account of the collapse of the copper market in the interim. Because the anticipated production was to be only 20 tons of copper per day from a high-grade matte containing 60 per cent copper, and because the ore did not contain gold or silver in quantities sufficient to pay for separation from the copper bullion, it was decided to design the plant along lines quite different from the modern smelteries treating large quantities of sulfide ores carrying appreciable amounts of gold and silver. The plant was built, therefore, for the production of copper by the Nicholls-James process. By this method two-thirds of the copper matte produced was roasted in a Merton calciner and charged into a bath of the remaining one-third portion of unroasted matte in a reaction furnace. The original design was not only novel in providing for the Nicholls-James process, but also in comparison with new plants built elsewhere, because of factors inherent in the locality. Sources of supply for machinery were very remote; it takes three months after the placing of an order to accomplish delivery of machinery into Messina from the United States. Native labor was available at 30 to 40¢ per 8-hr. shift. These factors permitted plant design which provided no overhead cranes, no matte ladles, no slag pots or other usual mechanical means of transportation between departments. The design resulted in a compact simple plant with furnaces arranged close together and. terraced so as to provide for gravity transfer of molten material from one furnace to another and for manual disposal of products. Fig. 1 shows the relative location of furnaces. The three furnaces are parallel on successively decreasing elevations. A superimposed feed floor was provided above the furnaces. All three furnaces were provided with coal-dust burners served from a Bonnot system of coal-dust transportation, and the waste gases were discharged into waste-heat boilers.

Probably the earliest sinter from lead ore was made in the product sinter boxes attached to some hand reverberatory roasters. The ore was drawn from the roaster bed when dead roasted, and then by laborious effort fritted together by rabbling at a high temperature in the sinter box. This was not a true sinter, but was a great improvement over the dusty dead-roasted fine ores. The Huntington-Heberlein pots were the first real advance in the art, and produced some real sinter. They required that the sulphides be preroasted to 5 or 6 per cent sulphur, and the long cycle of operating and deep bed of material used in the pots fostered the formation of densely fused material and fines. This necessitated crushing of the densely fused cake and returning to the next charge large amounts of fines screened out. The Huntington-Heberlein pots made comparatively high lead losses because the deep bed and high internal temperature together favored the volatilization of lead. Lime (CaO) was added to the charges, and this addition constituted the patented feature of the Huntington-Heberlein process. Its sole function we now know was to act as an isolator of the sulphide particles, and any other substance—for instance, iron oxide—of equal fineness performed the same function. The Savelsberg process used limestone instead of burned lime, and in this there was a definite advantage. The converting of CaCO3, to CaO is a highly endothermic reaction, so the lime acted not only as an isolator of sulphide particles but absorbed excess heat and to some extent prevented premature fusion of the sulphides. The Carmichael-Bradford process used gypsum instead of limestone, and had the disadvantage of adding more sulphur to a charge from which it was desired to eliminate sulphur. Here again the gypsum served only as an infusible isolator of sulphide particles. The first Dwight-Lloyd apparatus to sinter lead ores commercially was installed at Perth Amboy in 1907. The fact that lime in any form was necessary to sintering was quickly disproved by making excellent sinter from Bunker Hill and Sullivan table concentrates, silica sand and iron oxide only.

A STUDY of the kinetics of embrittlement in engineering alloy steels during tempering has indicated that the presence of alloying elements may define two distinct regions of embrittlement: 1) at 800° to 1000 °F, termed low temperature embrittle-ment, and 2) in the temperature range 1150 ° to 1250°F, termed high temperature embrittlement.13 It has been suggested that embrittlement in each region may be due to a different mechanism. At intermediate temperatures and extended times the course of embrittlement may be influenced by the superposition of the embrittlement occurring in the two regions. Furthermore, low temperature embrittlement has been known to decrease as the temperature is raised slightly above the maximum embrittlement range.' Jaffe and BuffumV ave presented data for a Ni-Cr steel illustrating the removal of the em-brittlement occurring at 932°F by reheating to 1250°F for an hour. Their data further shows that embrittlement proceeds continuously with increased time at 1250°F, becoming pronounced at long times. They interpreted this behavior as a retrogression phenomenon involving the solution of the small nuclei of precipitate formed at 932°F as the temperature was increased, and reprecipitation of larger nuclei stable at 1250°F, with the reoccurrence of embrittlement. It appears desirable to reconsider this explanation in the light of the two regions of embrittlement proposed by the authors1 for some alloy steels. In addition, it appears desirable to determine any influence of a preconditioning treatment in each temperature range upon subsequent development of low and high temperature embrittlement. It is thus the object of this investigation to study the characteristics of the two modes of embrittlement proposed in a commercial Ni-Cr alloy steel (AISI 3140). Experimental Details Material—The material used in this investigation was commercial AISI 3140 steel bar stock, received as % in. hot-rolled rounds. The steel analysis was as follows (in percentages): C, 0.39; Mn, 0.79; Si, 0.30; S, 0.028; P, 0.015; Ni, 1.26; and Cr, 0.77. The strengthening mechanism of fiber-reinforced silver has been investigated as a function of fiber density and fiber material. Stress-strain curves were determined in the range 2 x 10-6 to 2 x 10-3 plastic styain and slip lines were examined. The yield strength at 0.2 pct permanent strain is markedly dependent upon fiber density but the stress necessary to initiate plastic deformation is independent of fiber density. The strengthening mechanism of the fibers is shown to be malogous to grain boundary strengthening in poly crystalline metals. The variation in strengthening with different types of fibers is also noted and discussed. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the understanding of the mechanical properties of two-phase systems, particularly in the classical dispersed-phase alloys where the separation between the dispersed phases is 0.01-0.1µ. However, little work has been done on fiber-reinforced metals where the dispersed-phase separation is considerably larger than this. Parikh1 investigated the mechanical properties of many fiber-reinforced metals and found that two general relationships are always observed, as follows: 1) A fibrous network incorporated into a second weaker metal strengthens the latter, and the amount of strengthening increases with fiber concentration. 2) At a corrstant fiber concentration, the amount of strengthening in a given matrix can vary considerably, depending upon the type of fiber employed. The object of the present investigation was to examine the fuiidamental factors controlling these two observations. procedure: Fig. 1 shows the initial step in the fabrication of the specimens. The sieve is shaken so that the fibers fall into a mold with the longitudinal axes of most fibers in the X-Z plane. The fibers are then compressed to a predetermined density, thus forming a "felt", and the necessary amount of matrix metal is added to the top of the felt. The mold is heated, in vacuum or hydrogen, to above the melting point of the matrix metal; the molten metal flows into the felt, and the entire assembly is cooled. This produces a "composite" that is essentially free of voids. A number of composites were prepared in this manner using 1/4-in. kinked lengths of mild steel

"Sulfuric anhydride is one of the most voluminous technological emissions. The possibility of high-temperature SO2 oxidations without catalyst in presence of calcium-bearing filling materials (CaO, Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3) with obtaining of binding material on the basis of waterless calcium sulfate is studied. Due to application package HSC-4 the thermodynamic analysis of the specified interactions is made and following conclusions are drawn: 1) Reactions are feasible in the all range of investigated temperatures (400 – 1000 °?); 2) The best results should be expected at use of ???; 3) The heat of reaction does possible autogenous behavior of process. The researches have shown: 1) Practical possibility of the process; 2) SO2 oxidation without the catalyst is feasible in presence of ???, Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3; 3) The optimum temperature range is 600-800 °?; 4) The content of waterless calcium sulfate in a product reaches 48% that makes it possible to use as the binding material; 5) At excess of ??? the degree of SO2 collection is nearer to 100%. Introduction At processing of sulfide raw materials in metallurgical furnaces the significant amount of sulfur, mainly in the form of sulfuric anhydride is escaped. Rich gases (SO2>3 %) are used for the sulfuric acid or element sulfur production. Chemism of sulfuric acid manufacturing is based on catalytic high-temperature oxidation of anhydride. Poor gases of metal works (SO2 =2,5 %) and power combustion units (SO2 =0,5 %) after clearing discharge into the atmosphere. Commonly, to recovery of weak sulfuric anhydride the chemical and physicochemical methods are applied. A few chemical ways of recycling sulfur dioxide are applied practically. In a number of methods for SO2 recovery a pulp of metals oxides (magnesium, zinc, etc.) with formation of sulfites is used. In other case sulfuric anhydride is catch by weak sulfuric acid in the presence of an oxidizer (pyrolusite ore). Methods of absorption SO2 by solid sorbents, (carbon fibers, silica gels, zeolites) are known and put into practice. Regeneration of the saturated sorbents is realized by thermal decomposition or extraction. Obtained as a result high-concentrated solutions are a commercial product."

This paper gives a brief description of an investigation made several years ago on the diffusion of zinc into copper. The material for that study was furnished in the form of thin copper strips coated with zinc. The result was required rather quickly and at not too great an expense, and especially information was desired as to the rate at which zinc would diffuse from the zinc coating into the copper and the temperature at which the operation should be carried out. A study of the requirements of this problem indicated that the solution might be secured by means of six determinations. This is the smallest number that will give the information desired and, at the same time, furnish checks on the accuracy of the determinations which justify an abbreviated experimental program. This does not count a preliminary test which was designed to give some idea of the correct temperature to use. The minimum number of temperatures that can be used is two. Knowing the rates of diffusion of zinc into copper at two properly chosen temperatures, it is possible to calculate the rate for any other temperature, and also to check the accuracy of the determination by means of the heat of diffusion, which is calculated from the effect of temperature on the rate of diffusion. The minimum number of determinations at any one temperature is three. The amount of diffusion which occurs at a fixed temperature is definitely related to the time of diffusion, so that by determining the amount of diffusion for three different time intervals, this relationship may be established and possibly a check on the accuracy may be secured. This accounts for the six determinations or experiments, and suggests the logical plan of the work. The check used here is not generally applicable to diffusion phenomena, but it seems to hold closely enough for the limited amount of diffusion in this investigation to justify its use. The samples used were 5 to 6 mils thick and about 1 in. square. (communication to the Secretary*).-Mr. Johnson recognizes that connate waters must be driven, outward toward the earth's surface. He considers the ascent due to the settling and packing of the underlying sediments and to the formation of gas within the rocks, supplemented by abyssal pressures. The origin of the methane in the sedimentary strata probably is not simple. There are three possible modes of origin: (1) as marsh gas formed near the surface and entrapped in the sediments; (2) from abyssal sources; (3) by the decomposition of organic matter buried in the sediments. The abyssal source is generally negligible, and in all cases doubtful. The third origin is the most important in the gas fields. A fourth mode of origin, by the dissociation of liquid hydrocarbons, frequently has been suggested, but it is improbable, because crude oils are exothermic. Therefore they have no tendency, to split or decompose at low temperatures, as do endothermic substances, such as coal, which is geologically by the loss of methane, water, and carbon dioxide. This cannot happen to a hydrocarbon until its temperature of dissociation (" cracking point") is reached, which is over 250'.C. for the most easily cracked hydrocarbons and over 400° C. for others. Engler says that the dissociation of fats and waxes into oils is an endothermic process, thereby unconsciously nullifying his own theory of the dissociation of these substances at low temperatures. However, recently I have found reason to think that heat is liberated by the disruption of the molecules of fats and waxes, as it is in the molecular decomposition of the substances of wood, coal, etc. If this tentative opinion is correct, and Engler wrong, then it seems that the Engler-Höfer hypothesis of the origin of oil becomes not only possible, but even probable.

So FAR as the quality of the product is concerned, the history of the production of pig iron for foundry purposes is one of constant retrogression. The steps in this deterioration began with cold-blast charcoal pig iron, then anthracite iron, coke iron; then gradually warm to hot-blast coke iron, with the charcoal furnaces also heating their blast to get greater tonnages, and finally the present day hot-blast coke irons with scrap additions to the ordinary burden that, according to one European report, have gone as high as 135 per cent. Parallel with this quality retrogression is the enormous increase in furnace tonnages from about 15 tons daily to over 1000 tons per day in exceptional instances of modern practice. The key to this situation is economic pressure. The effect is a growing differentiation between furnace production for gray iron and malleable foundries and for the production of commercial steel. As the foundry is often compelled to draw upon the pig irons made for steel purposes, for economic reasons, whereas the steel industry does not draw upon foundry pig irons proper, the situation is resolving itself into one of grave consequence for the life of the gray-iron castings industry, and hence the intensive present-day feeling in foundry circles for rigid specifications to govern the quality of pig irons sold for foundry use. In the discussion of a paper on the use of scrap in the blast furnace held recently in the Institute, a very pertinent remark was made by one of the participating furnacemen, who confessed that "the things found wrong by the foundryman with his iron were beyond his depth." It may be added that those things are also beyond the depth of most foundrymen who, however, know from their results that they are getting poorer castings today with many pig irons than they did with those same brands in former years. Under the former fracture buying, the foundryman at least could select the strongest metal, as judged by the sledge, from various brands of similar fracture and pig section, and his results proved the soundness of his conclusions. Some years ago the writer's attention was called to the fact that rolling-mill scales from auriferous copper do not have the gold content proportional to the gold contained in the copper from which they are derived.' So, later, he made a few simple experiments, which are described herewith. In order to test the gold movement on the changing surface of a copper plate under the influence of oxidation, plates 6 in. by 8 in. by 1 in. (15.2 cm. by 20.3 cm. by 2.5 cm.) of converter copper, refined, of 99.29 per cent. purity, and leaded copper with a content of 95.65 per cent, copper, were obtained. Ten cuts were made through the thickness of the plates along the longitudinal center and the silver and gold content ascertained in each of the 10 samples in both plates, as shown in the accompanying illustration. The assay results, recorded in Tables 1 and 2, show that the gold distribution is relatively uniform in both plates, while silver has greater variations, especially in the leaded plate. The plates subjected to oxidation were placed in a red-hot muffle for about 2 hr., two small scarifiers being used as supports. Arranged alongside each other, they nearly filled the width of the muffle, and so were practically under equal conditions of heat and draft. The accurate observance of the time was not possible, however, because of other work, but the time of the exposure of each plate in a pair was identical. At the end of each period, each plate was plunged into water and completely freed of scale, which was carefully collected, dried, weighed, and analyzed. Samples of the plates had also been taken of the molten metal and duly analyzed. Table 3 contains the analytical data for the two plates and their several sheets, or layers, of oxide scales. These figures show that in the oxidations of the converter copper the silver is fairly uniform, while the gold is highly irregular and especially low in the first layer. In the oxidations of the leaded copper plate, the silver and gold contents are variable; however, this irregularity is due to two different causes. The
