IN 1943, we found, in the new Mather operation, a very unusual and disappointing condition in the footwall rock where all of our main haulageways were to be located. With the exception of a few hundred feet out of the thousands then planned and since driven, all of the openings require support. In general, the ground is not particularly heavy, at least by our standards, but it must be supported and the back carefully covered. Also, our operations require rather wide plat openings (16 to 18 ft) and rather flat curves at the turn-outs, all of which adds to the problem. When this completely unforeseen condition was discovered, ordinary timbering was the only answer, because of the impossibility of obtaining adequate steel supplies in time due to war shortages. Then by the time steel supplies were obtained and a practice developed, we found ourselves with between four and five miles of main haulage drifts and plat openings of a permanent nature, all of which were supported by hardwood timber, some of which had already rotted to an unsafe degree. To give all of the details of our experiments, studies, and experiences would fill a large book, but we were satisfied that our organization had done an excellent job, starting from scratch. You can appreciate our surprise when we discovered that we had added very little to an existing record. Attention was called to a footnote in a copy of "Carnegie Pocket Companion" year 1923. The note read: "Full information as to uses of H-Beams is given in pamphlet entitled 'Steel Mine Timbers.' " A search of our Engineering Library brought to light a pamphlet printed in 1911 showing extensive use of steel for this purpose. Except for welding in place of riveting, we have added very little to the designs in that book. We have, however, developed an experience which proves, at least to our own satisfaction, that steel mine supports pay off under the proper conditions. We are now convinced, in spite of the relatively high initial cost of materials, that steel sets, because of comparatively low installation cost, are actually cheaper than either treated or untreated wood sets, if they are properly designed and adapted. Several Sections in Use: Convenience guided our first experiments in steel sets, since for a number of years, we had used the 4-in. WF, 10 lb per ft section in 10-ft lengths as safety forepoles along with wood forepoles. This section replaced the 40-lb rail which had formerly been used for the purpose. Having the 4-in. WF sections on hand, it was natural that our first experiments in steel sets involved their use. Later, the rolling of the 10-lb section was discontinued in favor of the much stronger 13-lb section, which is now standard for both legs and caps in areas of no particular weight, but which, none the less, require permanent support. Our experiments involved the use of the 10- and 13-lb sections as legs and 6- and 8-in. I beams, 16 and 23 lb per ft, respectively, as caps. Experience soon indicated that, if the ground were heavy enough, and the opening wide enough to require a cap stronger than 13-lb, the 8-in, 23-lb should be used, eliminating the 6-in. I beam. We now know that the 8-in. WF section of the same weight, which we propose to use in the future, is considerably stronger for the amount of money involved. Comparative Strengths: Tables I to IV giving strengths of several species of timbers as compared with the structural sections that we now use have been prepared in accordance with accepted practice. Experience indicates that failure due to compression perpendicular to the grain of the wood does not destroy the effectiveness of a wood set frequently enough to be a practical factor. Therefore, no table of these values is included.

As part of a larger study of the mechanism of froth flotation of coal, the rates at which coal particles of various size and specific gravity react to froth flotation were investigated. Results of this study show that in flotation: I) recovery rate increases, but selectivity decreases with a decrease in particle size down to 100 mesh, and 2) recovery rate is constant for all sizes between 100M and 325M. n response to the growing demand for low-sulfur coking coal for iron making, the coal industry is continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning coal to acceptable ash and sulfur levels while maintaining maximum product yield. By present standards the industry has adequate processes for cleaning coarse coal, i.e., + 28 mesh, at almost any desired specific gravity. However, in the case of fine coal, i.e., —28 mesh, neither of the two existing processes - froth flotation or hydrocycloning — in its present state of development yields products that are comparable in ash and/or sulfur content to products normally obtained from coarse coal processes. The work outlined in this paper is part of a larger study directed toward maximum exploitation of froth flotation for fine coal processing. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of froth flotation with other fine-coal processing methods. The paper includes: 1) A discussion of the value of a detailed wash-ability study as a method of assessing the problems associated with fine coal processing, 2) A general discussion of hydrocyclone principles, included to serve as a basis for understanding the mechanism of coal flotation, and 3) A detailed discussion of the mechanism of coal flotation, as well as the research leading to the optimum use of froth flotation in combination with other fine-coal cleaning methods to provide efficient fine-coal processing. Our study of the rates at which coal particles of various size and specific gravity react to flotation shows that in flotation: 1) recovery rate increases but selectivity decreases with a decrease in particle size down to 100 mesh, 2) recovery rate is constant for all sizes between 100 mesh and 325 mesh, and 3) the flotation process effectively rejects only those extremely fine particles which do not contain surface carbon. (Because of this feature, froth flotation is an excellent method for rejecting clays - the only extreme fines in - 325-mesh coal that are always carbon free.) Washability studies of flotation products are used to assess flotation efficiency. These studies show that: 1) the increase in percent sulfur in flotation products above the theoretical sulfur content as defined by the washability study is due almost entirely to flotation of fine high-specific-gravity particles that are part coal and part pyrite, and 2) in a given size range particle floatability decreases with an increase in particle specific gravity. Error curves are explained and are used to compare the mechanisms of coal flotation and hydrocycloning. These comparisons show that hydrocyclone performance is affected primarily by particle mass, i.e., particle specific gravity and size, whereas coal flotation performance is dependent on both the particle mass and the coal surface available for bubble attachment. Since the error curve is a basic tool for rating the efficiency of any coal processing system, it will be useful to quickly review the principles of error curve construction. RATING COAL-PROCESSING EFFICIENCY BY THE ERROR CURVE The organic component of coal is of lower specific gravity than its impurities, and the most effective principle for coal concentration is therefore separation on the basis of specific gravity. However, since there is no sharp dividing line between pure coal and pure ash components, specific gravity must be closely controlled if the product is to have acceptable quality at maximum yields. In turn, the basis for close control in any coal processing system is the reference standard provided by precise laboratory washability studies. The two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of a solid are its intrinsic properties, e.g.,grain size, and the operative stress system. The latter may be modified in laminates by the presence of weak interfaces. This is studied in notch-impact tests on a mode1 system of mild steel laminates containing a variety of interfaces. The effect of these is evaluated in terms of the ductile/cleavage transition. Two laminate geometries are distinguished, here called "crack-arrester " and "crack-divider". In both, cleavage is inhibited. This arises because of relaxation of a state of triaxial tension. In the crack-avrester laminates, cleavage initiated at a notch is confined to the layer containing the notch. In crack-cliuider laminates, a thick specimen behaves as the Sum of a number of thinner ones. Additional benefit may derive from improved intritnsic propevties of- the lanlinate layers arising from greater deformation in their manufacture. It has long been recognized that the two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of solids are their intrinsic properties (e.g., grain size friction stress,3 distribution of second phase particles4) and the operative stress system under which fracture occurs. In solids that show a ductile/cleavage transition, cleavage is favored by the presence of a notch. This is because triaxial tensions, generated by the localized plastic constraint at the notch, are operative when fracture occurs.= Anything that suppresses these triaxial tensions will be unfavorable to cleavage. Such suppression may possibly occur in laminates containing weak interfaces and the purpose of the present paper is to explore this possibility. Two basic laminate geometries, here termed "crack-avrester" and "cvack-divider", are examined. They are illustrated in Fig. 1. With the crack-arrester laminates, there is the possibility that, when the fracture crack approaches the interface, this, if weak, may delaminate due to the tensile stress acting parallel to the plane of the crack.= If this happens, energy will be used in delamination, the crack will be completely blunted, and the triaxial tension associated with the crack will be relaxed. To fracture the second portion of the laminate, crack reinitiation will be necessary and, because of the relaxation of the triaxial tension, this reinitiation will occur under conditions of nearly uniaxial tension, which are unfavorable to cleavage. Thus there is the possibility of cleavage suppression in the second and subsequent subunits of a crack-arrester laminate. With the crack-divider geometry, there is again the possibility of delamination at the interfaces. This will divide the crack into a series of cracks propagating through the individual laminate subunits. If these are sufficiently thin, the triaxial tension will be relaxed towards a state of biaxial tension in each of them. Thus, with the crack-divider laminates, there is again the possibility of cleavage inhibition. In the present work, these possibilities are explored using a notched impact test on mild steel laminates bonded with soft solder, silver solder or copper. Even if delamination does not occur, it is still possible that cleavage may be inhibited in laminates. With the crack-arrester geometry, the cleavage crack in the first layer may be blunted and arrested by plastic deformation in the laminate bond, if this is ductile. Partial relaxation of the stress transmitted ahead of the crack into the second layer will then result and this will reduce the significance of this stress in the fracture of the second layer. With the crack-divider geometry, there cannot be much effect in the absence of delamination unless a large amount of energy is absorbed in rupturing the ductile material. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The composition of the mild steel (wt pet) was: 0.04 C, 0.29 Mn, 0.01 Si, 0.006 P, 0.008 S. "As-received" plate was annealed for 2 hr at 900°C and slowly cooled to give a grain size of 0.04 mm. The laminates were made by brazing or soldering together mild steel plates 8 by 3 in. by various thicknesses. These were obtained from the annealed plate by machining, so that the intrinsic material properties were .kept constant. Laminates containing two to six steel layers were studied using standard Charpy V-notch specimens cut from the bonded plates. The tensile failure of two dispersion-strengthened Ni-20 Cr alloys was studied and compared to the fracture of a similar alloy with no dispersoid. The fracture characteristics were studied using electron fruc-tography and transmission electron microscopy. In all three cases, the mode of failure was found to be microvoid coalescence. The failure in the dispersion-strengthened alloys was found to have initiated at the particles. The size of the dimples in the fracto-graphs was found to be related to the spacing of the particles, but not to the total elongation before failure. The elongation before failure was found to be related only to the amount of dispersed phase. These results are compared to those predicted by a theoretical model of ductile failure. THE continually increasing strength requirements for creep-resistant materials capable of long life at service temperatures above 1600"F (875"C) have developed considerable interest in dispersion-strengthened nickel-base alloys. The high yield strength of these alloys results from the presence of a dispersion of fine particles of thoria which act to impede the normal motion of dislocations. Many theories have been presented to explain the role of the dispersion in the strengthening of these alloys. A good review of these theories is presented by Ansell.' The ultimate strength of such alloys is not only related to mechanisms raising the yield strength, but also to the amount of work-hardening which occurs. This work-hardening is determined by the work-hardening rate and the amount of plastic strain before failure. Since fracture limits the amount of plastic strain, a study was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the fracture mechanisms in these alloys. Electron fractography and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the fracture characteristics in two dispersion-strengthened alloys and one similar alloy containing no dispersoid. These results are related to the tensile properties of the dispersion-strengthened alloys at room temperature and at 2000°F (1095°C). The results are also related to a theory for ductile fracture. 1) PROCEDURE Standard tensile specimens were made from 0.020-in. (0.051-cm) sheets of three different Ni-Cr alloys. The alloys had nominal compositions of Ni-20Cr, Ni-20Cr-2Th0,, and Ni-2OCr-4Th0,. All alloys were supplied in an annealed condition. The specimens were fractured in tension at room temperature to determine the effect of the dispersed thoria on the fracture appearance. The tensile properties were determined from the average of a minimum of three ten- sile specimens for each condition tested. The fracture surface of all of the alloys was examined by electron microscopy using standard two-stage plastic-carbon replica techniques. Thin foils of the dispersion-strengthened alloys were used to investigate the size and spacings of the dispersion particles, and to investigate sections of the 2 pct thoria alloy taken from areas of the specimen adjacent to the fracture surface. The thin foils were mechanically ground to 0.010 in. (0.025 cm) and then chemically polished to approximately 0.001 in. (0.003 cm) in a solution of 29 g of ferric chloride and 10 ml hydrochloric acid in a liter of water. The polishing solution was maintained at 150"F (65°C) during the thinning operation. The final thinning of the foil was done electrolytically using a solution of 700 ml ethanol, 100 ml 2-butoxy eth-anol, 120 ml distilled water, and 78 ml perchloric acid (70 pct). The potential was maintained at 15 v and the bath temperature at -20°~ (-29°C) during the thinning operation. The final thickness of the foil was approximately l000A as determined from the width of twins boundaries observed in many of the foils. 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The electron fractographs of the fracture surfaces of the alloys are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The normal interpretation of this type of fractographz is that, as a result of the difference between elastic and plastic properties of the matrix and the particles or other inhomogeneities in the alloy, microvoids are formed

Techniques for the epilaxial growth of single -crystal silicon carbide films on silicon were developed. The vapor-phase decomposition and bydrogen reduction of silicon tetrachloride (SiC14) and Propane (C3H8) resulted in clear films of silicon carbide, lip to seveval microns in thickness. The growth took place in a horizontal . silicon epilaxial reactor at 1100°C (pyrometer) at a rate of- 3000Å per minute. Electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction studies demonstrated that the films were single-cyrstal, ß -phase, or cubic silicon carbide. SiO2 film were used to mask areas of the silicon sur-lace in order that the silicon carbide might be grown in controlled geometries. Both n- and p-type films were grown on p-type silicon waters.. Heavily doped silicon films of the same conductivity type as the silicon carbide films were deposited over the silicon carbide in order to affect better probe contact to the structures. when n-type silicon carbide mesas were grown on p-type silicon substrates the de vollage-current relationships between films and substrates were that of junction diodes. These diodes showed a sensitivity to while light ill that the incident light increased forward- and reverse-satro,ation currents, P-type silicon carbide mesas grown on p-type silicon were ohmic rather than rectifying in their voltage -current relationship. No conclusions could he reached concerning heterojunc-tiou rectification in the structure. SILICON carbide is a semiconductor with many interesting properties. It decomposes at temperatures above 2200°C.1 It occurs in two general crys-tallographic forms—hexagonal (a Sic) and cubic (ß Sic)—with the cubic form having a forbidden-gap energy of 2.32 ev and the hexagonal form (specifically the 6H polytype) a gap energy of 2.86 ev.3 It behaves as an extrinsic semiconductor at temperatures approaching 5003C. It has been shown to have a high resistance to radiation damage4 and p-n junctions formed in Sic have been shown to radiate visible light under forward- or reverse-bias conditions. Epitaxial silicon carbide on silicon carbide has been successfully grown through the use of a variety of techniques, such as gaseous cracking of SiCL4 and CC4, nearly all of which require a deposition temperature above 1500°C.6 This paper will cover very recent work on the gas-phase deposition of highly ordered films of silicon carbide on high-quality silicon single-crystal substrates. The films have been shown to ex- hibit junction-rectification properties when geometrically isolated regions are electrically biased with reference to the silicon substrate. There will be no discussion of the mechanism of heterojunction rectification, but the methods of film fabrication, geometry control, and structural evaluations will be covered in detail. Electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and diode electrical properties were used to characterize the films and the junctions. GAS-PHASE DEPOSITION OF Sic The techniques for the deposition of silicon carbide films were a logical outgrowth of the standard silicon epitaxial process. The major premise followed was that, for any film to nucleate in an ordered fashion where there is considerable mismatch in lattice parameters (in this case 22 pct), an extremely clean, damage-free substrate surface must be presented to the gas stream. Thus a standard gas-phase HCl etching step was used to prepare the substrates for growth. A minimum of 5 µ of substrate-surface material was removed prior to the deposition of Sic overgrowth films. The techniques used for growing silicon carbide films were those of growing silicon alone, with the added injection of a hydrocarbon gas into the hydrogen and silicon tetrachloride gas stream. The hydrocarbon gases used thus far have been research-grade (99.99 pct) methane (CH4) and propane (C3H8). Propane ultimately gave the best results. The gas flows were controlled through a panel shown schematically in Fig. 1. A hydrogen main stream of 30 liters per min passed through the horizontal quartz-tube epitaxial reactor, while SiC14, C3H8, HC1, and doping gases were injected as side streams. The

Determination of the quality of cementation of casing in oil wells in the past has involved inflow and circulation tests to insure that the producing zones were adequately sealed off from the adjacent zones. Existing logging methods, such as temperature and radioactivity surveys, may detect the presence of cement behind the casing. However, the qualities of the cement (i.e., its hardness and particularly its bond to the casing) are not indicated. The new logging method described in this paper operates on the principle that the attenuation of a sonic pulse transmitted by a casing is greatly increased when that casing is bonded to an outer annulus of hard material (such as set cement) which has an appreciably smaller sonic-wave velocity than that of the casing. The down-hole tool contains a source of recurrent sound pulses which are detected by a receiver spaced a few feet from the source The amplitude of the detected casing-borne pulse is measured, and the resulting signal is transmitted to the surface where it is recorded vs depth. Since amplitude is a function of attenuation, the log is readily interpreted. Laboratory studies have shown straightforward relationship between attenuation and such variables as source-detector spacing and per cent of circumference bonded. It is shown that cement not set or not bonded to the casing has compara- tively little attenuating effect. Field examples show not only the cement top, but also the variation in cementation quality below the top. Further, the increase of bonding with time and after squeeze cementation is depicted. The detection of poor cement jobs is confirmed by production tests and by formation-test results. It is anticipated that the method will have wide application in evaluating cementation quality prior to formation testing in completions and recompletions. The analysis it affords may aid in further improving cementation techniques. INTRODUCTION The main purpose of oilwell cementing is to isolate a production zone from other undesirable zones. To investigate whether this purpose has been accomplished, several logging methods have been used such as temperature logs, radioactive tracer logs, etc. While these logs all respond to the presence of cement behind the casing, they do not indicate the degree of bonding of the cement to the casing. Early in the application of sonic logging, it was noticed that considerable attenuation of sound signals takes place in cemented pipe and is often made evident on the standard Sonic log by cycle skipping.' The development of a circuit capable of continuously recording the amplitude of the casing-borne sound signal has made possible an extensive series of laboratory and field tests, which gave the following results. The amplitude of a sound signal after it has traveled in a firmly cemented pipe is only a small fraction of that recorded by the same device in free pipe. This provides a wide spectrum of energy levels; for given local conditions, empirical values of the amplitude can be correlated with the quality of cementation. Interpretations made in this manner generally have been confirmed by production tests, circulation tests and squeeze cementation. The purposes of this paper are to give a general description of the new logging method and to present some laboratory and field results. CYCLE SKIPPING Early attempts to study the quality of the cement behind the casing were performed with a standard Sonic log, which measures the transit time At, and were based on the well known phenomenon of cycle skipping.' Cycle skipping normally is interpreted as being a manifestation of weak signals at the receivers. The log of Fig. 1 was run with the recording instrumentation adjusted to enhance cycle skipping. A mirror-image presentation was used for better visual interpretation. The transit time of sound in steel is about 58 microseconds/ft (corresponding to a velocity of 17,000 ft/ sec), and the portions of the log where this value is recorded are interpreted as zones with no cement bond. Where cycle skipping produces a higher value of At, weak signals (or a high rate of attenuation) are indicated, and a good cement bond may be present. To evaluate the influence of uniformly tensioned roof bolts on roof stability, mechanically anchored roof bolts were installed using the conventional bolter and a specially developed thrust and torque controlled retrofitable box mounted on a bolting machine. Thirteen thousand bolts were installed over 19 crosscuts in a 4 heading development in an operating coal mine. Geological , bolt and mine parameters were recorded at bolt installation, and bolt tension histories, roof sag and other changes evident in the rooms, crosscuts and intersections were recorded over a 2 month period. In all, 24 variables and 11 responses were quantified at 67 bolt clusters. These data were analyzed statistically to determine the significant variables influencing roof stability. As the mine development was safe and stable during the monitoring period, roof sag after two months was used as an index to quantify "stability." The variables of significance were shown to be coefficient of variation of bolt tension, bolt anchorage capacity, roof lithology, roof shape, standard deviation of bolt tension, and dip of roof lithologies. It was concluded that of the variables with which the mine operator has control, bolt tension uniformity was the most significant parameter at this mine. Other variables, such as intersection type and time between mining and bolting , were not significant, whereas, some other potentially significant variables such as horizontal stress or roof joint frequency did not vary sufficiently for their influence on stability to be evaluated.

Single station group velocities of fundamental made Rayleigh waves over the period range 15-100 s are carguted for five provincial profiles of the West Pacific. Based on recordings of earthquakes around the West Pacific by the W~ (World Wide Standard Seismic Network) stations AFI (Afianalu), HNR (Honiara), WEL (Wellington), PAR (Raratonga) and RAB (Rabaul). The inversion of the derived dispersion curves for average shear velocity-depth structure of the crust, LID and LVL shows that (i) the over-all structure beneath the profile 'westernSamoa-Micronesia-Mariana' is in between that of regions 3 and 4 of Pacific Ocean (Yu and Mitchell, 1979), except that the velocity is slightly lower, (ii) the uppermost mantle beneath the 'Vitiaz Trench' profile between AFI and HNR is similar to that of region 2 of the Pacific - in other words, thin LID and thick LVL; (iii) the structure beneath the ' Ibnga-Keradec Ridge' profile has a thick crust with thick sediments, and LID-LVL velocity and thickness are similar to region 3 of the Pacific; (iv) beneath the profiles ' Tonga/ Kermadec Trench events-RAR station' the structure is intermediate between regions 3 and 4 of the Pacific Crean; (v) from decomposition of the 'Solomon-meriana' profile, the structure beneath the Cntong Java Plateau has a thick crust with thick sediments and the uppermost mantle is similar to that of region 3 of the Pacific clean.

THIS communication reports film-recorded low-energy (-100 kev) proton blocking patterns'-3 for hcp and wurtzite crystals. In particular the sequence of relative line intensities* (corresponding to planar blocking) of common hcp metals is compared with those of the wurtzite semiconductors CdS and CdSe. The results show that the sequence is characteristic of structure. For closely similar structures such as those of CdS and CdSe, differences of line intensity attributable to the difference in atomic number, 2, of the scattering centers may also be seen. The apparatus and techniques used in this work were identical with those reported previously in a study of cubic systems.3 All metals were given standard metal-lographic etches, and the semiconductors cleaved, immediately prior to introduction to the vacuum system. Fig. 1 shows the unit cell of the wurtzite structure, and the geometry used to obtain the [1120] and [0001] patterns of Fig. 2. The axial ratio, c/a, for all ma- terials of Fig. 2 is close to 1.63. The patterns are then directly comparable in linear dimensions inasmuch as they have been reproduced at the same overall magnification of the patterns. The high gas emissions associated with the depth of mining and very high coal extraction at some Australian Collieries have provided a need to investigate the influence of geological and mining conditions on levels of gassiness. The introduction of longwall extraction in particular is associated with complex strata control problems and quick changes in gassiness. To this stage of Australian coal mining, no standard method has been developed to predict the different levels of gassiness associated with the various geological and mining conditions; and the relationship between coal output and total methane make has not been established. For local conditions, with a large number of coal seams lying in close proximity to the working seam, the significant contribution of gas emissions from adjacent strata was expected, especially as strata relaxation occurred during longwall mining. This depends mainly on geological conditions, strata control and coal production. For the deepest of the B.H.P. Collieries in the Newcastle region, the relationship between coal output and total methane make has been investigated by systematic gas balance measurement during longwall extraction. The computer method of iteration was used to approximate the mathematical equation from the initial graphs of coal production versus quantity of methane in the ventilation system for various strata conditions. The angle of caving was established for local geological and mining conditions, for planning and design of the positions of cross measure boreholes.

Selecting a few of the present day Western plants, we find furnace lengths varying from 12.5 to 87 ft., widths at tuyere level from 42 to 84 in., and heights above tuyeres from 5 ft. 4 in. to 22 ft. 4 in. ; and comparing present designs with those of the past, we meet contrasts no less striking. Unlike its transverse section, the length of a furnace has come to depend rather on the size of unit desired than on the requirements of smelting ; and if the question of length be ignored, several of the various existing designs can be grouped together on the basis of a common transverse section. This section, having a width at tuyere level of 56 in. and a height above tuyeres of 18, ft., was developed at Great Falls, and the story of its development contains some interesting features. Ground was broken for the Great Falls works in the spring of 1891. The testing of different kinds of process flow configurations and cell volumes in industrial scale flotation processes is in general difficult to accomplish and even expensive to perform.1 Also the lack of suitable measuring and analyzing devices often prevents effective comparison of results. Nowadays, the existing flotation processes contain, almost with exception, several return loads which result in difficult control of the process. There exist two good reasons for testing different kinds of flotation circuits at the Outokumpu Oy Kotalahti mine. Firstly it is easy to change the process flow configuration without any additional installation work and secondly, the concentrator is highly automated with magnetic flow meters, on-line analyzer and process computers. In this presentation, open circuit flotation is compared with the classical closed circuit flotation which contains return loads. In additional, the effectiveness of computer control in both cases is estimated and also the effect of cell volume on flotation results is examined.

Continuous casting is the most important process for solidification of steels. In this process, the fluid flow pattern in the tundish and in the mould have significant effect on the product quality. Problems associated to fluid flow in the tundish include surface turbulence, ?short-circuits?, formation of dead zones and vortexing. During grade changes, mixing in the tundish plays a significant role in determining the length of the intermixed slab. All these flow aspects can be studied by means of mathematical and physical models. In the last years, numerical simulation of fluid flow has become a very popular tool in the analysis of the performance of continuous casting tundishes. In setting-up these numerical simulations, special care should be taken in choosing the appropriate mesh distribution, the interpolation scheme, the adequate location of the inlet boundary and the turbulence model. In the present paper, turbulent fluid flow in different configurations of tundishes was simulated. Different turbulence models were used in the simulations. Residence time distribution (RTD) and mixing curves during grade changes were predicted and compared to results obtained in physical models. The performances of the different turbulence models were evaluated. For the tundishes that have been studied, the performances of the different turbulence models tested in the present work were similar. There is no evidence that any of the models provided sustained improvement when compared to the well-established standard k- model. All turbulence models tested presented limitations in simulating flows under low turbulent Reynolds numbers.

THE purpose of this paper is to set forth the matters of principal interest in connection with work done in the past few years on the purification of the metals of the platinum group, including the study and modification of methods already in the literature and the development of new procedures. For the most part, the results will be given in summary form, reserving the publication of detailed data and directions for a forthcoming paper to be issued by the Bureau of Standards. In recent years increasing interest has been shown in the preparation of the pure platinum metals, both by those concerned with the manufacture of the metals and their alloys for scientific and industrial purposes and those who are engaged in the study of the chemical or physical properties of the elements. The purification of the metals usually has been regarded as a matter so involved and difficult as to require the attention of specialists. It is hoped that this paper will show that any of the metals can be prepared in any desired degree of purity by relatively simple straightforward chemical methods. For the most part, it is thought that the methods given are suitable for small-scale refineries as well as for the laboratory; also, that they will bring the time required for the purification of any of the metals within reasonable limits. The new procedure suggested for purifying platinum should prove to be much shorter than any methods described in the literature.

An experimental method is described for testing diffusion of gases in crude oils at pressures and temperatures up to 3,000 psia and 200° F. A sampling technique was developed to withdraw by constant-pressure mercury displacement about 60 µl of oil from the diffusion cell through any of several 1/2-in vertically spaced capillary tubes and to trap about 4 µl of the oil in a specially designed microsampler. Oil trapped in the microsampler can be completely inserted in the sample inlet of a chromatograph. From analysis in a three-stage chromatograph (GLC), gas concentration in a sample is determined from the ratio of gas peak heights to area of peaks of reference components (hexanes or heptanes) in the oil. A diffusion coefficient is calculated from measured concentration profiles with known equations for diffusion in finite or semi-infinite systems, depending on whether the gas has or has not reached the end of the oil column. Results are given for a test of methane diffusing at 2,560 psia and 160° F in crude oil from the Weber Sandstone reservoir in the Rangely field, Colorado. A constant diffusion coefficient of 3.34 X 10-5 cm2 per sec was obtained which gives a good fit between calculated and experimental profiles determined at six times after start of diffusion. The maximum standard error of gas concentration determinations experienced with this method was ±0.88 ml per ml of gas-free oil.

Initial glory holing was followed by sublevel stoping, with a small proportion of total production mined by shrink and cut-and-fill methods.The sublevel stoping method was successfully modified to cater for altering ground conditions encountered at increasing depths. At present, 94 per cent of production comes from sublevel stopes. The evolution of this mining method and current techniques and practices is outlined. A combined shrink and,sublevel benching method was also developed to increase the mining rate of narrow orebodies over the standard stoping lift of 380 ft. Pillar recovery and stope filling operations have been continuously modified to suit the relIuirements of a rapidly developing mine.INTRODUCTIONOre production commenced at Mount Isa Mines in June 1931. Since then production has increased from approximately 2,500 tons of lead ores per mine day to the current 11,000 tons of sulphide ores per mine day comprising 3,100 tons of lead ore and 7,900 tons of copper ore. End-of-life electrical and electronic scrap material attracts attention as a good opportunity for new value creation through efficient metal and energy recovery of such materials. On the other hand, the treatment of such wastes becomes important to avoid problems for society and environment. Treatment of such secondary raw materials faces multiple challenges due to their increasing complexity and evolving nature. Processing of these complex scrap materials together with recovery of a wide range of valuable metals with a combination of pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy using Outotec technology is discussed in this paper. One key consideration is environmental performance which needs attention when processing such complex secondary E-waste materials. Outotec has successful experience with commercial projects in the countries at the forefront of environmental and operational standards. INTRODUCTION Increasing attention has been drawn to the responsible processing of end of life Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) as part of metals recycling, especially copper. It has been estimated that the amount of WEEE globally in 2016 was around the level of 46 Mtpa (Balde et al., 2017), representing a major disposal challenge but at the same time huge opportunity for resource recovery. The potential for increasing the recovery is high, because the official recycling rate of WEEE is in 2016 only 20% (Balde et al., 2017) and at the same time the estimated increase of the WEEE amount is between 3 and 5% per annum in the EU (Eurostat, 2019).
