Fluorite, a kind of critical non-metallic minerals, is the primary source of industrial fluorine. Sodium oleate (SO) is commonly used as the collector of fluorite ores. However, because of its some features (such as the low solubility, high solidifying point, and poor dispersion of SO) at low temperatures, it profoundly inhibits its collecting ability as well as the flotation performance. Herein, we have developed a low-temperature-resistant collector for the efficient flotation separation of fluorite from quartz. The advantages and disadvantages of the SO and sodium petroleum sulfonate (SPS) were analyzed by comparing the performance under different temperature conditions. The results of flotation tests suggest that SPS exhibited much better collecting performance than SO under low temperature. The flotation mechanism of the two collecting agents were further analyzed by contact angle measurements, zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and flotation kinetics. The results indicated that both collectors can selectively undergo electrostatic and chemical adsorption with fluorite, with no adsorption on quartz surface. The sulfonic acid group in SPS is a hydrophilic functional group, which has a relatively higher solubility in water. Therefore, the water solubility of SPS is better at low temperatures.

A redução do ferro é a etapa da produção de aço que mais consome energia e emite CO2. Os processos de redução direta são uma alternativa ao tradicional alto forno devido ao uso de H2 no gás de redução e consequente menor emissão de CO2. Existem duas tecnologias principais, Midrex e Energiron (ou Hyl) que representam 80% da produção mundial de ferro esponja. Uma revisão das patentes publicadas por estas duas empresas foi realizada e foi possível descrever o funcionamento dos processos, os desenvolvimentos ao longo dos anos e evidenciar as diferenças. Ambos os processos são baseados em fornos de cuba onde os gases de redução fluem em contracorrente ao minério aquecendo-o e reduzindo o ferro. Os gases de redução são gerados pela reforma catalítica de metano. A reforma no processo Midrex é realizada principalmente pela reação com CO2, e no processo Energiron com H2O. Há uma versão sem um reformador separado, o processo Energiron ZR. Neste processo o gás natural é injetado conjuntamente com H2O e CO2 no reator de redução e o ferro recém reduzido funciona como catalizador das reações de reforma.

O Alto Forno 3 (AF3) da Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) é o equipamento muito importante no processo siderúrgico da Usina Presidente Vargas (UPV), situada em Volta Redonda (RJ), por responder por mais de 70% da produção de gusa da UPV. Na produção de gusa é gerado o Gás de Alto Forno (GAF), subproduto de alta relevância, pois este gás sai do topo do AF3 com grande pressão e cinética, energia essa passível de utilização. Em 2007 a CSN, optou por adquirir um equipamento denominado “Top Pressure Recovery Turbine” (TRT), capaz de aproveitar tal energia para gerar energia elétrica. Em 2013, a equipe de supervisores da KHI – Kawasaki Heavy Industrie, fabricante da turbina, veio para o Brasil para realizar no equipamento os testes a frio e a quente para na seqüência vir a operá-lo. Ocorre que fatores alheios ao objetivo desta apresentação impediram a equipe da KHI de partir o equipamento no tempo previsto, bem como de retornar ao Brasil para dar seqüência nas atividades. Em novembro de 2013 a CSN definiu por partir o equipamento com recursos próprios, sendo este o foco do trabalho. A presente contribuição técnica vem mostrar o trabalho desenvolvido internamente pelo grupo técnico a fim de finalizar o projeto e colocar a Turbina de Topo (TRT) em operação, fato este dado total ênfase pela direção da empresa devido ao cenário nacional de crise energética em que os valores de energia estavam no limite máximo permitido pela legislação e impactando diretamente nos custos da empresa.

The corrosion behavior of three kinds of medium-Cr rolled steel pipeline steels in carbon dioxide collecting and transporting environment at different temperatures was studied. The results shew that the 5Cr sample was most affected by temperature. When the temperature rised from 30 °C to 90 °C, the corrosion rate increased from 0.12 mm/a to 1.87 mm/a, which was increased 15.6 times. The corrosion rate of 7Cr steel at 30 °C was similar to that of 5Cr steel. However, as the temperature increased, the corrosion rate rised slowly, increasing by 2.4 times at 90 °C. The corrosion rate of 9Cr steel was not obvious with temperature, and it was always below 0.06 mm/a. The thickness of the corrosion product film of the three samples gradually increased below 70 °C, and suddenly increased above 70 °C. This was related to the negative temperature coefficient of the solubility of FeCO3, and the thickening of the product film also affected the ion exchange of the cathodic reaction. An increase in the Cr content contributed to grain refinement and increased the proportion of the small-angle grain boundaries. More fine grains mean an increase in the total length of the grain boundaries, which could provide a diffusion channel for the free Cr element; on the other hand, the low-angle grain boundary structure was more orderly, with a lower free volume and lower interface energy. The material that composes the roof in coal mines differs in strength according to variations in its physical nature and characteristics. Some material such as limestone and massive sandstone, (free from slits) and carbonaceous shale or bone, will often remain in place in narrow work without the use of timber or other means of support, but in wide places the use of supports becomes a real necessity. Roof material composed of shale, fire clay or small laminations of sandstone, or shale or sandstone interspersed with laminations of thin coal, presents conditions that call for timber support in both narrow and wide work. However, in narrow work such unstable roof material may be taken down until the strata assume an arch that is self-supporting for overlying firm strata such as a roof coal, a touch weather-resisting, shale, sandstone, or limestone. The proper support of the roof in roadways used for haulage or travel adds to the economy of operation by preventing delays in transportation and increases the safety of those who travel these roadways.

In recent years, several rare earth intermetallic compounds with the B2-type structure have been reported to exhibit high tensile ductility and high KIC fracture toughness at room temperature. These materials retain considerable ductility even at 77K. These are noteworthy findings because most intermetallics possess poor room temperature ductility and low fracture toughness unless one or more special contrivances are applied (e.g., doping with small additions of interstitial elements, offstoichiometric compositions, testing in ultra-dry atmospheres, etc.). This paper summarizes recent findings on rare earth B2 intermetallics. These include the determination of the active slip systems; the strain rate sensitivities; yield strength maxima at elevated temperatures; the search for possible twinning and stress-induced phase transformations; ab initio calculations of their defect energies and the anisotropy of dislocation line tension. Potential applications of these materials and the possibilities that this study may suggest strategies for increasing ductility in other intermetallic compounds are discussed.

Minor manipulative details, the application of a finer measuring graticule and the reproducibility of the procedure are described and the author accepts with gratitude this ready-made answer to the first and second points of Dr Finkelstein's comments. Mr Williamson The author is indebted to Mr Williamson for historical background to early experiments with captive bubbles and it is conceded that the original paper described another avenue to an old flotation goal. The field of application is restricted and we would not work with all the material illustrated by Klassen and Mokrousov.1 The particles in Figure 74(a) are far too large and irregular; material in Figures (b) through (d) could be employed for semi-quantitative work in spite of obvious disadvantages; Figure 74(f) represents ideal conditions. We have studied this mineral-collector association in the size range given and results were satisfactory. For larger pick-up values than that illustrated an induction period of more than 0.01 second was required (actually 90 seconds for a maximum bubble load at pH 7.2 with 25 g/t oleic acid!). Mr Slander and Mr Kooij Researchworkers in a practical mineral development laboratory may well ask what contribution yet another micro-technique can make to the problems of large scale ore flotation. The obvious answer is that there can be little or no direct translation of results obtained with a static system comprising air bubble and pure mineral concentrate to a dynamic multicomponent operation. However, for the rapid study of one mineral or variable some small scale apparatus must be employed. In the Anglo American Research Laboratory, the described semi-quantitative pick-up technique has filled a niche and requirement. For ourselves, the system represents a definite advance over the contact angle approach in that samples of minerals conventionally prepared in laboratory or plant may be used, which is a desired step nearer flotation. We bracket this pick-up apparatus with the Hallimond tube1,2 and evidence is now to hand that pick-up curves may often be related to flotation recoveries obtained from this tube with pure mineral samples and from the Fuerstenau glass cell3 with the total ore at low pulp densities. We would not wish to push the comparison of pick-up results past this stage for there is much published development work relating the Hallimond and Fuerstenau equipment to flotation on a larger scale. At the Anglo American Research Laboratory for example, a test in a Fuerstenau cell is often the final integrated step in laboratory investigations into the TORCO process. As these contributors rightly point out, pick-up tests can offer nothing towards the determination of optimum reagent dosage for large scale flotation. This is the function of bench-type flotation cells with up to 2 kg batches of ore. At this level, collector performance and consumption and physical properties of the froth are more comparable with large scale operation. The pick-up cell, Hallimond tube and Fuerstenau cell are essentially equipment from which the effect of control parameters can be derived. For the assessment of collector behaviour, the pick-up approach is rapid and economic and we offer here a pick-up contribution towards the flotation of Witwatersrand uraninite with anionic sulphonate collectors (Fig. 1). A large crystal of the local mineral was not available for contact angle measurements and owing to its low concentration in Witwatersrand gold-bearing reef, a small sample was laboriously obtained by tabling, superpanning and heavy medium separation. The pick-up values of a sized portion were determined by the described procedure in the presence of nine petroleum sulphonate collectors. Responses fell into two categories; "normal" curves (dotted lines) and a group of collectors which were very active at low concentration but showed depression of pick-up at the higher levels. The similarity in form of curves for collectors 1 and 3 was apparent and reagent 3 was found to be simply a diluent of 1. Otherwise, collector performance could not be related to either sulphonate content or molecular weight of the active constituent. However, reagent 2 gave the best performance in a bench flotation cell with regard to overall uranium distribution but, as predicted, reagent 1 yielded the best grades. Later pick-up tests with a similar class of collector have suggested that depression at high reagent concentrations may be due to "bubble armouring" whereby an hydrophilic air-liquid interface is produced which rejects mineral attachment. Prolonged investigations with the same mineral sample have not been required except for the study of uraninite which lasted for more than a year. Variation in pick-up response could not be detected over this period during which the mineral was stored under distilled water. The only visible change was a small efflorescence of lead sulphate, readily removed and decanted off after stirring with a glass rod in the sample tube. In its main role as a "trouble-shooter", the pick-up method is applied to fresh mineral samples taken from a flotation plant and soon discarded or from a current run in the ore-dressing laboratory. After production of a concentrate, a solvent cycle, as described in the original paper, may be required to remove heavy organics or other contaminants as when a sample has been taken from circuits containing detergents, grease or return flotation solutions. This solvent cycle will not remove chemisorbed collectors and we prefer not to work with minerals from flotation tailings or with pick-up cell discards. It has been thought preferable to answer the contributors' other apprehensions with regard to sample preparation, activators, depressants and the physical properties of reagents in another paper on offer to this Journal. It covers pick-up investigations relating to the flotation of nickeliferous pyrrhotite at two Anglo American Corporation Mines, which approach seemed the correct orientation for a reply to another contributor to this paper.

Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations reluted to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 3’% to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 1% sulfur.

"Pre-treatment of mill feed in a minerals processing plant enables for higher production efficiency per ton of product, reduction of consumables and diverting mineral feed types. Sensor based particle sorting allows for pre-concentration of the run-of-mine (ROM) material prior to other concentrating process. Various sensors provide different responses from the minerals in measured particles. The capability of “accepting” or “rejecting” particles based on sensor responses is investigated in specific test work for each project. Modern sorting machines use pneumatic actuators to divert the reject particles from the material stream. This paper discusses the incorporation of ore sorting test work in processing and plant design. When taking the effects of a sorting circuit into account early in the process planning phase, the downstream process can be adequately sized and impacts evaluated. Potential benefits include but are not limited to increased head grade, lower tonnage to the mill, increased mining operations, removal of deleterious elements and changed properties in the process feed. In a case study we present the Keliber lithium project in central Finland. The plant will produce 9000 tons of lithium carbonate per year from a spodumene ore. Ore sorting and flotation tests were carried out in laboratory and pilot scale. Process models were designed and simulations performed using Outotec’s HSC Chemistry Simulation software. Changes in the flotation performance (grade, recovery, impurity levels) were simulated with and without the pre-concentration of the ROM material. The metallurgical performance and mine economics of the different operational scenarios were evaluated using the Ore-Met optimizer module of the simulation software.INTRODUCTION Challenges in the recent years such as declining ore grades, increasing energy prices, scarcity of water and increasing environmental regulations raise the demand for more efficient processing technologies. Sensor based sorting offers a method for pre-concentration or waste rejection at an early process stage. The technology analyzes each rock particle separately for their unique physical and chemical properties, and diverts the particles into separate material streams by high pressure air jets. Successful implementation relies on ore heterogeneity, differential sensor response and suitable feed preparation."

Mining officials, as well as members of the Bureau of Mines staff, in their efforts to make mining safer are confronted from time to time pith complicated problems concerning solution of which there is a diversity of opinion. To reduce these differences of opinion as much as possible and to obtain a generally acceptable decision on any mine-safety question, the Director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines established the Mine Safety Board on June 1, 1924- *** to consider questions arising within any divisions of the Bureau that require a definition of tie Bureaus s collective opinion as to safety practices, safety devices, or safety methods for underground operations or open-pit mining. The approved2/decisions shall form the basis of teaching and policy for the Bureau.

In the valuable paper of Mr. Dunbar D. Scott and its varied discussion, on the evolution of mine-surveying instruments, the tripod-head has not received the attention it merits. During the last 50 years this very necessary adjunct to the surveyor's instrument has been much improved. The legs are of better construction; and the devices for laterally moving the instrument over the station-point and for quick leveling, without the use of the screws, have given to the instrument fitted with the modern tripod-head the same facilities possessed by the oldfashioned ball-and-socket, with more perfect accuracy, not attainable in the latter, while saving from 30 to 50 per cent. of the time required for setting the instrument over a station. During the 1980s, a revolution has been taking place in industrial minerals marketing. Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. Minerals are being transported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to faraway customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable just a few years ago. No longer do the textbook rules of thumb for industrial minerals marketing apply. This author recalls three of those rules he was taught in mineral economics graduate school in the 1970s. As recorded in class notes: • construction aggregates are seldom shipped more than 32 km (20 miles) from the quarry; • cement is sold within 240 km (150 miles) of the mill; and • industrial sand is sold regionally - it is freight constrained to a market radius of no more than 320 to 400 km (200 to 250 miles) from the plant. And yet, the author looks up in 1989 and observes overland movements of aggregates of many hundred miles, overland movements of cement and industrial sand of 1600 km (1000 miles) or more, and water movements of both aggregates and cement into the United States from sources halfway around the world. Truly, industrial minerals are in the midst of a marketing revolution. The companies that have led this revolution have enjoyed considerable financial success in the 1980s. They have enhanced their profitability by increasing market share, capacity utilization, and average selling prices by taking product to remote markets where premium prices are available. They have consistently outperformed their competition, many of whom remain unaware that the marketing revolution going on around them is actually a transportation/distribution revolution. The successful industrial minerals company of the next 10 to 15 years must participate in the transportation revolution as it continues to evolve. Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. In this study, the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC) was investigated for fluorite beneficiation. The structure and principle of the specially designed column are described. Fluorite samples from the tungsten separation tailings of the Shizhuyuan Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, P.R. China, were tested using a small-scale continuous flotation test unit, and concentrates with a fluorite grade higher than 98% were obtained. One rougher and three cleaner stages in the FCSMC achieved the same separation performance as one rougher and eight cleaners in conventional flotation cells. This greatly simplified the flotation circuit and reduced operating costs.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MOBILE MINING MACHINE INTRODUCTION Until recently, developing tunnels in hard rock has been accomplished either by the drill and blast method or by using large tunnel boring machines. Combining the flexibility of drill and blast with the safety, efficiency and productivity of a TBM has been the objective of mining machinery producers for many years. In 1979 The Robbins Company began developing a new type of tunnel boring machine called the Mobile Miner to meet these objectives. The development and testing of the Mobile Miner is the subject of this paper. CURRENT MINE DEVELOPMENT METHODS Both the drill and blast method and the use of a TBM have notable advantages and disadvantages. The drill and blast method, for example, allows much more flexibility, requires less setup time and has a lower initial cost than a TBM; however it requires the use of high explosives and blasting has a disrupting effect on the rock surrounding the development. A TBM, on the other hand, is safer to operate, more efficient, more productive and produces smooth tunnel walls without disturbing the surrounding rock. In longer straight drifts it will easily out distance the drill and blast method. The TBM, however, is limited to boring a circular cross section tunnel which must then be modified if a flat floor is required. It also has a higher initial cost and an extended setup period.

Common dry batteries use zinc as the negative electrode. Producers commonly use additives such as mercury to prevent corrosion and to increase the mechanical resistance of the zinc anode. Alkaline batteries also contain it, as an anti-corrosive agent. When mixed with the common municipal solid waste, heavy metals as zinc and mercury pollute soil and ground water supplies, moving to the food-chain and affecting human health. Due to these possible damages, this kind of waste must be properly disposed, or recycled. Thus, even in low amounts (ppm) in batteries, mercury has to be eliminated or, at least, its content should be reduced. This work presents the use of pyromettalurgical processes, to reduce mercury content and recover zinc. The tests involved batteries treatment at temperatures from 300° to 1000°C. Mercury is eliminated up to 650°C, and zinc is evaporated at higher temperature treatment. C

Public Law (PL) 95-87 contains explicit demands for land use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land use plans; however, they are not well integrated. Accommodation to these planning requirements affords an opportunity to create better links among local land use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take a more positive interest in local land use plans and in resource inventories. States should consider handing down to local government the responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

The paper proposes three methods to determine optimum lifetime of a mining project1. The conclusion is that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate (by coincidence). It is also stated that: "The stochastic and option pricing models, in addition to providing a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV (net present value) calculation, showed that the example project has the potential for substantially higher return. By explicitly considering a project's potential risks, the stochastic or option pricing techniques can more accurately describe its probable investment performance." This discussion is intended to demonstrate that: • It is no coincidence that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate. • The stochastic and option pricing models do not provide a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV calculation. • The potential for a substantially higher return is misrepresented. First, a review of investment decision theory in mining is needed. Net present value is the preferred performance measure because of the flexibility offered when comparing various alternatives. However, it presents the following disadvantages: • The discount rate selection is not straightforward. • The NPV obtained represents a deterministic characterization of the variables included in the cash flow calculations, i.e. a single-point estimate.

A significant portion of the piling industry has long felt relying on soil setup to gain the required capacity is a complexity that would rather not be dealt with. Instead, the pile are driven to the required capacity on the initial drive and the potential gain of capacity due to soil setup is simply considered an added bonus or safety factor. There appears to be an attitude that if one did not put in the energy required to develop the full capacity on the initial drive, then one should not expect to gain anything from Mother Nature for free. However, substantial savings in time and materials can be realized by properly accounting for setup. This paper will show the impacts and ramifications this rationale can have on required labor and material costs and illustrate a case history with significant soil setup and the savings realized on a project currently being constructed.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in effort put to tracking progress toward sustainability. Many aspects of society are participating in this “movement” including mining. The drivers are diverse and include evolving ideas in business and public administration as well as concerns for human well-being, community robustness, environmental integrity, and overall social and ethical responsibility. The scale in question varies greatly from local to global. For the most part, there has been a pre-occupation with developing discrete measurable signals. This paper argues that the overwhelming focus on the quantitative is ill-advised and that a more effective approach is to bring together the best of both quantitative and qualitative. The mining industry in particular is well-placed to affect this shift and reap the associated benefits.
