INTRODUCTION The stabilization of slopes is not a design problem. A slope is designed before it is made. For a slope to be stabilized it must already exist. The basic problem has existed for a long time. It started with cuts in soil and rock made in the 18th century during the construction of the canals which were developed at that time, and continued into the 19th century with the development of the railways, and in the 20th century with motor roads and lately open pit mining. It is not difficult to stabilize a slope, but certain questions must be asked and answered. These are: i) How much stability is required? ii) For how long is it required? iii) How important is the cost? These three questions indicate the basic problem of Civil Engineering, which is that the solution to any problem is a compromise between safety, cost and time. Stabilization of slopes is no exception. If the slope exists why is stabilization a problem? There are many possible reasons, for instance, a neighbouring and similar slope may have failed, or it may be necessary to change the conditions of the slope, steepen it, increase its height, put weight at the top, or construct a building at the foot in which case added security is required, or guarantee its stability for a longer time. MECHANISM OF FAILURE In order to pick the correct method of stabilization the mechanism of failure must be understood and the immediate cause of failure known. Often to remove the cause is the best remedy. The mechanism of failure has been studied over a period of many years in landslide problems. Pit slope failures are very similar to some types of landslides. (1) (2) (3) (4) In one sense there are many causes of landslides. Terzaghi lists 19. This means that there cannot be a standard solution to a stabilization problem. In another sense, it can be said that there is only one cause, which is gravity. The Australian Constitution specifies certain powers of the Commonwealth Government to be used in its capacity as the national government. Certain of these broad powers result in the Com- monwealth having a facility to play an important part in the development of the mining industry. The State Governments, however, by virtue of their wide powers to regulate matters within the boundaries of a particular State, are more directly involved in the day to day administration and standards of activities of mining operations. In this respect the Common- wealth has something of a dual role because of its "State-like" responsibilities for the mainland Terri- tories. The components of the role that the Common- wealth Government discharges in relation to the mining industry are qualified to varying extents at particular times by the political persuasion of the Government. In absolute terms the components are as follows. 1. Economic management. The Commonwealth's fiscal and monetary policies have an important effect on industry as well as on State finances. In particular, the taxation regime employed by the Commonwealth Government is of direct importance to economic decision-makers in the mining industry. 2. International matters. International trade and commodity matters are, more and more, becoming an everyday part of the conduct of a nation's foreign affairs. 3. Exports. The Commonwealth Government, via the constitutional powers over overseas trade, have exercised varying degrees of control over mineral exports to achieve particular objectives. 4. Foreign capital and investment. Australia in general, and the mining industry in particular, is and will continue to be a net importer of capital. There appears to be bipartisan political agreement in Australia that foreign investment policy must be enunciated to ensure that investors. are in no doubt that Australia welcomes beneficial investment and technology from overseas. 5. Environment and Aborigines. Governments, both Commonwealth and State, have in recent years become more involved in these areas in response to their interpretations of community aspirations. 6. Energy. Access to assured supplies of energy is now viewed, by Governments worldwide, as a desirable asset to ensure the well-being of a nation's people and industries.

There is a tendency on the part of practical foundrymen to accept with reluctance the results of tests on sands, binders, and such materials made in the chemical laboratory alone. They feel that such tests frequently emphasize and measure properties that are of minor importance and fail to take account of characteristics that are important in determining the value of the material in actual practice. Experience seems to indicate that the most thorough and conclusive test for any new foundry material is an actual run in the foundry alongside of a standard material of known value. Such a test, however, involves certain difficulties and necessitates certain precautions. It is not always easy to obtain a fail trial for a new material. We all have certain prejuclices, which unconsciously affect our judgment to a marked degree. A practical test frequently involves so many workmen, each of whom reacts in a different manner to the test, that the personal equation becomes very complex and the true results of the test are obscured. There are times, too, when a thorough experimental trial of a material would interfere too much with the. rush of work in a department or would hazard the quality of the product to such an extent as to make it inadvisable. Under such conditions a laboratory test is advisable before the material is sent into the foundry. These tests should be made as practical as possible and so closely related to foundry practice as to give a true index to the value of a product for the purpose desired. Core sands and molding sands are as numerous "as the sands of the sea" and valy as much in quality. Old sources of supply are continually failing and new ones must be opened, so that we must continually search for new and better grades of sand. During the past year, the Ohio Brass Co. has developed tests for sands, cores, and binders which bear a close relation to the particular use to which these materials are put in the foundry and which arc fairly indicative of their value. While the tests thus far have been confined to cores and core sands, it is expected that tests for molding sand will bc developed in the future.

BACKFILLING of stopes and other underground openings in the Homestake mine with sand tailings was undertaken primarily to reduce surface subsidence, which was wrecking much of the surface plant and a substantial part of the town, and to make possible maintenance of open-ings into the top of pillar stopes as mining progressed. The progress of this type of filling has been rapid and the results very satisfactory. Sand is now used in filling timbered stopes, shrinkage stopes, and abandoned drifts and crosscuts. A permanent pipe-line system for transporting sand tailings into the mine by gravity has been installed. The close filling of all stopes has resulted in important benefits other than the two major ones. The ore bodies in the Homestake mine occur as replacements in one distinctive layer of the metamorphosed pre-Cambrian sediments along a group of minor folds that together form a complex anticline that pitches at 35° to 40° to the southeast. The ore bodies are extraordinary for their magnitude. Widths of over 300 ft. have been mined and continuous ore has been followed for over 1200 ft. along the strike on some of the upper levels. Mining has been by shrinkage stoping with square-set mining of crowns and pillars. In the standard plan, shrinkage stopes 60 ft. in the direction of strike and the full width of the ore have been taken up to within 25 ft. of the level above. After filling, the crown has been mined by square-set methods, as have also the 40-ft. pillars between shrinkage stopes. In former days, when the supply of ore seemed inexhaustible, the mining of pillars was allowed to lag far behind because of the high cost. Many pillars were rather badly fractured on the level and in some places between levels. Coarse waste was used for backfilling all stopes, but in pillars it became increasingly difficult to maintain haulageways for the transporta-tion of this fill over the top of the stopes as mining progressed. The cost of maintaining these crosscuts was excessive and in many pillars prac-tically impossible. Therefore it became the practice to fill pillar stopes by tapping the back and sides of the stopes.

The Bauschinger effect, or rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve upon reloading, represents a temporary apparent softness that is more pronounced at large strains than small and for complete unloading than for partial unloading. Interrupted creep tests on copper exhibit a similar temporary softness (high creep rate) upon reloading. The fact that the strainwise dying-out time of these effects is the same in both tensile and creep tests shows that they are related. Thus, the term Bauschinger effect appears to embrace behavior following partial or complete unloading and reloading in addition to behavior following reversed loading. It is suggested that the term may properly apply also to certain creep behaviors following a small load decrement. INTERRUPTED tensile tests at low temperatures show1 a rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve for reloading, which indicates a temporarily low deformation resistance. In the absence of recovery, the curve soon rises to the value that would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. The rounding of the reloading tensile curve has sometimes been referred to1 as the Bauschinger effect, although the term is more commonly applied to low deformation resistance in compression following tensile prestrain. The unusually broad usage of the term Bauschinger eflect in ref. 1 seems justified by the obvious interconnection of the various behaviors to which it has been applied.' In fact, the following discussion will indicate that still broader usage might be desirable. The Bauschinger effect is common at room temperature but apparently disappears at higher temperatures.2 Interrupted creep tests and tensile tests were made on certified OFHC copper (nongaseous impurities exclusive of silver were 0.004 pct), cold drawn 84 pct to ½ in. diam, and annealed at 600" (about 0.025 mm grains) or 850°C (about 0.2 mm grains). The tests were made in standard creep or tensile machines, using an O.S. Peters microformer-type extensometer or, for the small plastic strains, a special arrangement employing General Electric magnetic gage heads.' Interrupted creep tests at room temperature show3,4 an initial softness after reloading, manifested by an initial creep rate that is higher than that which would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. Fig. 1 shows some typical examples. This effect is apparently temporary (as is that in tensile tests): in four of the five tests shown, the log rate vs strain curve becomes parallel to an

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonite to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath. 1986 and personal communication). These bentonite; typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X- ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. ADOPTION on a commercial scale of electrolytic deposition of metals brought with it the problem of providing an acid-proof cell or tank. Where the electrolyte contained only a dilute solution of sul-furic acid, wooden, tanks with lead linings were gen-erally adopted. There were cases, however, where a lead lining was impractical as a result of the presence of nitric acid in the electrolyte or because of the method of handling the current for deposition. purposes. Wherever lead was unsuitable for this work, asphaltic mastic was used in its place. This material, in addi-tion to possessing acid-proof qualities and being an insulator for electrical current, is also cheaper than lead. The only reason that prevented the common adoption of mastic for all work of this type was that it was still an unknown, unproved. material; while lead, although more costly, could be relied on. There are several electrolytic tank-houses equipped with acid-proof mastic linings now in operation. The first large one was the series tank-house of the Balti-more Copper Co., where the mastic used was composed of natural asphalts and a silica aggregate. These lin¬ings are now seventeen years old and still in service. The next large plant was that of the Chile Exploration Co., at Chuquicamata, Chile, ,and it is with this that this article deals. Another plant of more recent date is that of the Nichols. Copper Co., Laurel Hill, L. I., and specifications for the new electrolytic tank-house of the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga call for mastic lining. It is also being tried out on a smaller scale or for experimental purposes by many of the larger metal-lurgical companies. Thus while mastic linings were adopted originally to meet operating conditions that prohibited the use of lead, they are now in a position to compete successfully with the standard lead linings that are in general use. The Chile Exploration Co. plant, with a total area of over a million square feet, giving satisfactory ser-vice under the most adverse climatic and metallurgical conditions can be truly called the pioneer in this work. ,This article will deal with the development of the acid-proof mastic linings in Chuquicamata from the original experiments begun in 1912 up to and including the final successful installation that has now been in service for a number of years.

IN the early part of the last century textile fabric was used for the filtration of products of combustion and lampblack was obtained by passing smoke through a series of canvas bags. Natural draft was, used to draw and force the smoke through the bags. About 1850 bag filtration was used for collecting zinc oxide. Around 1876 it was introduced for collecting the fume from lead-ore hearth smelting in. Missouri. Shortly afterward it was used, first at Portland, Me., and later at Canon City, Colo., for the collection and production of zinc-lead pigment in treating mixed zinc-lead sulphides. In 1890 the Globe Smelting & Refining Co., at Denver, Colo., installed a bag house containing 1,458 bags for the recovery of fume from silver-lead blast furnaces. This installation was too small to handle all of the gases and was increased to approximately 2,300 bags. . In 1900 the number of bags was again increased, making a total of approximately 2,800: The usual difficulties incident to new installations were encountered, but they were gradually overcome and the bag house became accepted as standard practice for this class of smelting. As all of the bag houses built since have followed the general lines of the Globe installation, a short description may be of interest. The general construction of the Globe bag house is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The building is 149 ft. 8 in. long by 67 ft. 4 in. wide and 40 ft. 2 in. high from the basement floor to the eaves of the roof, having brick walls 26 in. thick from the foundation up to the thimble floor, from there an 18-in. wall for 16 ft. and a 13-in. wall from this point to the top, a distance of 14 ft. 2 in. Additional stiffening is given to the walls above the basement by pilasters located every 16 ft. The end-wall construction is similar to that of the side walls with the exception of the spacing of the pilasters, which is somewhat greater. The roof is made of corrugated iron laid on 1-in. boards and supported by a timber frame work spaced 16 ft. apart resting on the basement partition walls. On top is a louver running the

This paper is directed at the problems flowing from Australia's capital gains tax (CGT) on the disposal of exploration and mining tenements both in Australia and overseas. It will seek to identify the issues and give some idea of the dollar consequences of decisions lacking forethought. The paper should not only be seen in the context of Australian tenements. CGT applies to the disposal of any assets by an Australian resident anywhere in the world. Offshore incorporated companies are not necessarily free from CGT risk where it can be shown that control management and control of the relevant company is in Australia. Also the disposal by non residents of Australian tenements are potentially caught by CGT. Some will ask what has taxation got to do with a valuer who merely determines the value of assets. These days no determination can be blind to the consequences. Whether the consequences can encourage a movement in value is another thing dependent upon the circumstances; but? A role of an experienced taxation consultant is to point out parameters within which associated professionals can work. The parameters will vary from case to case, but these when clearly indicated may be of help to persons such as valuers. When one comes down to it real estate salesmen are never wrong. They have a feel for the market and almost through self fulfilling prophesies achieve sales at their guestimates. Whether they could have achieved higher considerations become virtually academic in the process. Of course I am not suggesting that tenement valuers can be compared to real estate salesmen, or am I? What is the value of a tenement? Is it the DCF/NPV type of generated value based on a large number of variable factors (ie what one may call the fundamental value)? Or is it what another may pay to purchase that tenement if it were on the market at an instant point in time? How big is the market, the quality of the bidders, the size of their purses, the needs of the buyer for comfortable fit, the premiums for foreigners, the standard of the marketing, the industry intelligence level of the bidders, the obligation to farm/sell down? The list goes on endlessly. One question must be.asked-"Is a range of values acceptable for tax purposes". ie Would any tax consultant ever provide a valuation to the Australian Taxation Office that indicates three or more possible values ie

AMONG the many newer disclosures that have accompanied the petroleum industry's progressively deeper exploratory drilling is the increased frequency with which the operators are encountering reservoirs of which the products at the time of discovery exist wholly or predomi-nantly in the gas phase. The popular term "distillate pool" is most often used within the industry when referring to this type of reservoir, and in this paper the term is used in that sense. These pools have been observed in many different surroundings. In some places the entire reservoir is filled with the wet gas containing its water-white condensible products in the gas phase but apparently with no dark oil or other hydrocarbon liquids in the reservoir. The 8200-ft. horizon in the Big Lake field in West Texas is a good example of this type. At other places the wet, or distillate-bearing, gas may form a large gas cap directly overlying and in contact with an extensive reserve of dark oil. Oklahoma City, Kettleman Hills, the 8500-ft. horizon in the Big Lake field, and many others are examples of this type. There are also many places in which the wet distillate-bearing gas fills nearly the entire reservoir space, while the dark oil occupies only a narrow, bandlike zone, which marks the boundary of the reservoir along its lowest productive contour. The heavier components of these deep pool gases are generally water white in color, a large portion of which are condensible in a conventional oil and gas separator, when operated under pressures of the order of 400 to 800 lb. per sq. in. Although the water-white products recovered in the separator sometimes have end points of 650° F. and higher on standard Engler distillation, they occur only in the gas phase in the reservoir. It is entirely possible that even some small amounts of dark colored reservoir components may occur in the gas phase when the temperature is 300° F. and pressures exceed 6000 lb. per sq. in. Close approaches to these conditions have been encountered in the deepest producing wells. The condensible content of the deep reservoir gases of the many pools that have been tested or produced to date shows a wide variation in both condensible content, per 1000 cu. ft. of gas, and physical character.

A number of wells were drilled at two phosphogypsum stacks, one at P-21 owned by IMC and the other at Agrico's South Pierce Stack. Each well was sampled, and composites representing 5-ft increments were leached with synthetic rainwater to determine the extent of metal and nonmetal migration. To simulate what was occurring in the stack, composite samples were placed in a column, so that the column represented the stack in miniature form. Leaching experiments showed that both metals and nonmetals moved down the column when water was added to the top of the column. Data obtained from P-21 showed that with time the concentration of metals and nonmetals reached equilibrium values. The concentration of Ca, SO4, F, Si, and PO4 were -600 ppm,~1,500 ppm, 32 ppm, 14 ppm, and 22 ppm, respectively. Column leaching of South Pierce material, representing 0 to 55 ft of stack, showed that after 355 in. of water, the stack was near equilibrium values down to the 33-ft level. With continued addition of water, the portion of the stack at equilibrium would continue to increase and eventually reach the values observed for P-21. The test showed that the sulfate concentration of the effluent from the stack would never reach the USEPA standard value of 250 ppm. During the leaching test, it was determined that the permeability of the phosphogypsum in the columns was 0.000103 cm/sec. This number was used in the modeling. The data obtained from the leaching experiments cast some doubt on the practice of entombment now being practiced for closure of phosphogypsum stacks. The data clearly shows that with time, the amount of material leaching from the stack is low in concentration, with only the calcium and sulfate at higher levels. When a stack is closed at an existing operating plant, allowing rainwater to fall on the stack and capturing the solution in the existing pond system would eliminate the need for covering the stack, since with time the closed stack would continue to leach and at some point reach the equilibrium values of the P-21 stack. Entombment means that the leachable material in the stack will always be there and will require monitoring forever. Allowing rainwater to decontaminate the stack may be the best environmental solution to the problem.

Evaluation of Ellenburger reservoirs in West Texas has been an uncertain matker at best because of the lack of cores and suitable core-analysis method. Large amounts of oil arc produced from sections from which sample cuttings are obtained that contain litile porosity and no oil saturation. It has long been realized that the formation in some areas contained numerous fractures and solulion cavities that probably contained the major part of the oil present but the magnitude of the porous system conltaining oil has been unknown. Diamond coring cquipmene, used in the mining industry lor many years, has been developed for oil-field use to obtain high core recovery in fractured dolomite that is not possible with conventional coring equipment. A 36ft section of the core recovered from a fractured Ellenburger reseivoir waS analyzed by a unique but simple method to obtain the first defmite evaluation of one section of the producing formation. The cores and the method of analysis used are described and the results arc discussed in some detail. Discussion The first successful known analyses of cores recovered from the Ellenburger formation in the Permian Basin area were made on cores recovered with the use of diamond core heads. Conventionul coring methods previously used have had lour core recovery and standard methods of analysis have proved to be inadequate for evaluation of those cores that were recovered. Core Descriplion The Ellenburger formation to be dis cussed was cored using diamond core heads and oil-base drilling fluid. Of the total 103 ft cored to a depth of 8893 ft in the Ellenburger, 99 ft or 96 pct was recovered. The dolomite cores were described as gray to white, crystalline to coarscIy crystalline, with chert and calcite inclusions. Occasional shale partings ? to ¼ in. in width were noted. A small amount of green clay was found in some of the coarsely crystalline material. So intergranular porosity was found by inspection in any of the cores. The core urns highly fractured over most of its length with not more than two continuous feet that failed to contain fractures. The fractures Were nearly vertical and varied in width from those harely visible to as much as one millimeter. AT the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rejections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blast furnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. Test results indicate feasibility of fatty acid flotation under certain restrictive conditions. FATTY acids have been used as standard collectors for floating the matrix1-8 but not the leached zone phosphate ores. After a series of investigations, Davenport9 and Tarbutton10 concluded that the Florida leached zone ores tested were unamenable to fatty acid flotation and must be upgraded by floating the siliceous gangue with Armac-T as collector. The cationic flotation was estimated11 to cost almost ten times as much as a fatty acid process that would ideally give the same flotation grades and recoveries of phosphates. Mineralization: Extensive deposits of leached zone aluminiferous phosphate occur in Florida."= The ore sample used for this work was obtained from the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., Clear Springs area, Florida. The ore is a potential source of uranium and aluminum as well as phosphorus. Since the uranium and the recoverable aluminum are contained in some of the phosphate minerals, an upgrading of phosphate results in a corresponding enrichment of both uranium and aluminum. The phosphate minerals in the ore are primarily pseudo-wavellite, millisite, and carbonate fluorapatite, with a minor amount of wavellite. Quartz and clay are the common gangue minerals, quartz being predominant. Others present in small amounts are ilmenite, hydrated iron oxides, staurolite, monazite, and zircon. Experimental Procedures: After being dried to less than 1 pct surface moisture the material was dry-ground in a Hardinge conical ball mill to —6 mesh. The ground product was classified into 6/20, 20/200, and —200 mesh size fractions. On the basis of Table I, the coarse and fine size fractions were considered as phosphate concentrates, because of their high phosphorus contents. In contrast, the 20/200 mesh fraction, which was low in phosphorus, was used as the flotation feed. All the flotation tests, unless otherwise stated, were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine under the following conditions: 1) 400 g of solid feed for each test, 2) 2000 rpm impeller speed, 3) 8.9 pH and 4-min conditioning, and 4) 3-min flotation. The procedure used for the quantitative bubble pick-up tests has been described previously.18

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the behavior of oil securities during the six-year period January 1932 through December 1937. This period was selected because of its varied character. It includes the depths of the depression, the broad and spasmodic recovery, and the recession collapse. The first part of the analysis is devoted to the correlation of a number of economic factors with an index of 13 oil stocks. The second part is a comparison of the different,ial behavior of 6 oil stocks. The relationships developed here are only a few of many that might be considered in a complete analysis. The stock market is regarded as a barometer of business confidence and as such exerts an important influence upon corporate policies, particularly upon industrial expansion. The complex and continuously changing nature of its price structure, the ebb and flow of influences and the effects of impacts require dynamic rather than static analysis. When treated in this way, many of the important fluctuations in market prices and changes in the relationships between securities appear quite logical. The market for oil securities has varied widely in recent years. The Standard Statistics index of 13 oil stocks made a bull market peak of 166.7 in September 1929. The collapse of the boom and the ensuing bear market finally carried the index down to a low of 36.4 in June 1932. From this point oil stocks made an irregular recovery; they reached a top at 139.7 in March 1937, and after maintaining this approximate level through August, declined precipitously to 93.3 in December 1937. The prices of these 13 oil stocks have gone up and down under the influence of numberless variables. These variables are of two kinds, those external to the industry, and those that are solely due to its internal condition. The external factors are political, social, and economic, both domestic and foreign. These are the influences that induce the ebb and flow of all prices in general and security prices in particular. Among the internal factors are the regulation of industry, the development of new reserves and processes, and the disequilibrium due to lack of balance between supply and demand. Some of the simpler relationships are examined in this paper.

CONSERVATION of mine timber is becoming in-creasingly important, and the consumer is en-couraged to use treated wood to permit longer life of mine timbers, and attempts are also made to substitute other material for wood. The great diffi-culty in substituting metal and concrete props for wood is the inability of these to give yielding resistance to roof pressure as wood supports do. In Europe, where mine timber costs are somewhat more important than in America, many designs of steel props have been tried, but have been unsuccessful, chiefly on account of inability to give yielding resistances. A metal pit prop that gives the desired effect has been extensively used in European mines and has caused a considerable reduction in accidents from falls of roof. Where mining operations have been sus-pended on account of strikes, conditions were found to be much better where such props were used instead of wood props, and machinery, which would have been destroyed by roof falls had wood props been used, was protected by the use of these yielding metal props. As this prop is adjustable, all the work of adjusting and transferring long props through narrow ways is done away with. It can also be drawn with greater ease and safety than wooden props; when properly used it is practically indestructible. European users have reported savings as against wooden props as high as 80 per cent. It gives audible warning of its working because the sliding action takes place in minute jerks. As the prop yields gradually to pressure its force is taken up by friction between the H sections, and this movement progressively increases the resistance of the prop to the increasing roof pressure. In the early development of the prop, it was designed with two steel members a and b of standard H steel sec-tions of equal dimensions provided with guide claws a' and b', held in frictional contact against each other by two differential wedges, f and g, and a floating link, e. In setting up the prop its two members are drawn out to the required length, the loose wedge, g, is then fitted into the space between the left-hand roller of the link d and the lower member of the prop b, and tapped suf-ficiently tight to prevent any relative movement of the two members from taking place prematurely. The prop is then raised to its intended position and secured in the usual way.

"The development of the SAG Power Index (SPI) Test in Canada has created a new and accurate way to measure ore hardness in a SAG environment. Coupled with the standard Bond Ball Mill Work Index Test it is now possible to determine from these two relatively inexpensive laboratory tests, the amount of energy required to grind an ore from the primary crushed size to the desired liberation size. By testing multiple samples to discover where the hard and soft ore zones are located, the representative hardness distribution for the ore body can be determined and grinding equipment selected that is capable to meet production targets for all mining areas of the deposit.Previously, it was deemed prudent to select up to 50 t samples of ore for Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests and a second 5 t sample for metallurgical pilot plant work. The methods outlined in this paper show how the 50 t sample is no longer required for SAG design because it is better to measure the representative hardness distribution of the ore body than the hardness of a “chosen” representative sample. This is demonstrated to be true by the fact that the lower horizons of an ore zone cannot initially be accessed to recover 150mm pieces, and the bulk samples taken, rarely represent the desired design hardness of the ore. Median hardness will not yield a good result in most cases and a clear understanding of the location and extent of the hardest zones is imperative to achieve a truly successful grinding circuit design.This paper discusses two plants (Kubaka and Agnico Eagle) that have been designed using SPI and Bond with no pilot plant test backup. Both have been very successful in that they can grind design tonnage on the hardest ores in the mine. This guarantees that the mine’s profitability is protected in any mining sequence. It also allows the extra power to be converted to higher throughput on softer ores if additional cash flow is needed. The advantages from the owner’s point of view are dramatic. This procedure will be attractive as well when considering the costs for test work, and the samples for testing. Existing diamond drill core is normally used and this allows the inclusion of data from the deepest regions of the mine. In addition, it is also clear that the decision to use a crusher can now be made at the design stage of a project based on measured parameters and the estimated capital costs of alternative designs."

Discussion of the paper of B. H. Dunshee, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, August, 1913, pp. 1511 to 1531. GEORGE E. MOULTHROP, Butte, Mont.:-The recording for the first time by Mr. Dunshee, in a readily usable form, of the various systems of square-set framing applied in the Butte district is a valuable contribution to mining information. The many different methods of framing employed, due to the individual ideas of superintendents and foremen of segregated companies, have given full opportunity to determine the best framing for the conditions as found in these mines, and the final adoption of a system uniform for all the mines has come about through a study of these various methods and an experience covering a period of many years. The sawed 10 by 10 in. and 12 by 12 in. timbers undoubtedly give the best satisfaction; and the style of framing the sawed timber that under all conditions has given the best practical results is that used in the Anaconda group and other mines, described and recommended by Mr. Dunshee. In this framing the posts have a horn 2 in. high and 6 in. square, the cap end having dimensions of 3 by 6 in. Instead of the framed girt shown in the drawings of the Anaconda group, the 6 by 10 in. girt adopted at some other mines, which fits into the cap and post framing with no other preparation than cutting the timber to the necessary length, fills all the necessary requirements for strength and affects a material saving in timber and labor. This, as Mr. Dunshee states, is without doubt the type of framing which would be adopted as a standard for 10 by 10 in. sawed timbers if sawed timber sets were to be used in the future generally. But saw-timber for the mines was becoming scarce and expensive, and round timber for the square sets furnished an alternative which provided, at greatly reduced cost, material which in every way supplied the requirements of the mining conditions. The use of the round timber with a satisfactory framing makes available a conveniently located and large source of supply which up to this time has served no useful industrial purpose. Particularly is this true of small timber, which is still standing in great quantities in the forests where the trees more desirable for commercial purposes have already been cut and marketed.

"Experiments were conducted to investigate the behavior of the integrated process with a three-dimensional electrode reactor combined with Fenton process for coking wastewater treatment. Effects of initial pH value, reaction time, H20 2 dosage, Fe2+ dosage on Total organic carbon (f OC) removal rate were investigated. The kinetics of degradation of TOC from coking wastewater by three-dimensional fluid bed electrode reactor combined with Fenton process was also studied. Experimental results shows that three-dimensional fluid bed electrode reactor combined with Fenton process had better synergic effect, average 17.4% TOC removal rate was improved within an hour. It was found that TOC degradation in coking wastewater followed a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic model. The optimum degradation efficiencies of TOC were up to 60% as pH3.4, 3.5 mM ofFe2+ andl.2-1.8ml/L H20 2 in 90min reaction period. Furthermore, the integrated process showed a rapid reaction performance at a low temperature within a short reaction time and remained high efficiencies for TOC removal. Overall, the integrated process was proved feasible for coking wastewater treatment in practical applications.IntroductionCoking wastewater is generated from coal coking, coal gas purification, and by-product recovery processes of coking, which is composed of phenolic compounds, heterocyclic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ammonia, cyanide, polycyclic nitrogen-containing aromatics, acyclic compounds, etc. Most of these constituents are refractory, poor biodegradability, toxic and carcinogenic['-31. Currently, coking wastewater is usually treated by different forms of A/O biological nitrogen removal process as the primary treatment process, but the aforementioned processes are not efficient enough to meet the requirements from the National Discharge Standard in China (GB13456-1992). According to the continuous requirement on improving environmental protection for coking industry (revised 2008), increasing wastewater utilization ratio and reducing discharge of effluent in the coke industry has to be implemented for cleaner production and sustainable development. Therefore, advanced technologies need to be developed to treat coking wastewater and reutilize the product as industrial cooling water, which would be one of the best choices to achieve zero discharge of wastewater and reduce water consumption per ton of steel [4-51 . In this study, three-dimensional fluidized bed electrode reactor combined with Fenton process was adopted to advanced treatment of coking wastewater, and the effects of operating conditions, including H2O 2 dosage, Fe2+ dosage, initial pH, and reaction time on TOC removal rate, were investigated. Meantime, study of kinetics of reaction was estimated."
