Natural lignocellulosic fibers are increasingly being used as polymeric matrix composite reinforcement owing to economical and environmental advantages as renewable and biodegradable materials. Among these, the piassava fiber extracted from a palm tree native of South America stands as one of the most rigid with a potential to be used as composite reinforcement. Therefore, the present work investigates the notch toughness behavior, by Izod impact tests, of epoxy composites reinforced with up to 40 % in volume of continuous and aligned piassava fibers. It was found that the incorporation of piassava fibers results in significant increase in the impact energy of the composite. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the nature of the piassava fiber interface with the epoxy matrix is the major responsible for the superior toughness of the composite.

ON May 5, the Washington, D. C., Section, A.I.M.E., devoted its meeting to the many-sided and perplexing question of mineral stock-piling for peace. Opening the symposium, Harry J. Wolf, of the War Production Board, outlined the problem under six heads: (1) Technical. Mechanical, chemical, or metallurgical importance of specified materials, emergencies that might arise, relative scarcity, and critical value of stock piles during emergencies. (2) Economic. Cost to Government, influence of Government stocks on commercial relationships and markets, effect of availability of items as a con¬structive influence on industry, Administration policies now and during postwar period. (3) Legislative. Need for immediate legislative action, need for legislation on postwar conditions as well as on current requirements, a constructive basic policy to prevent political manipulation. (4) Military. Consideration of re¬quirements and supplies bearing on national safety and needed for manufacture of equipment, and adequate reserves of scarce materials for research or experimentation by military agencies. (5) International. Interests of the United Nations in contradistinction to those of the United States; effects of nonisolation policy on nature, location, and administration of stock piles. (6) Negative stock-piling. Question of United Nations' legislation to prevent stock-piling by Axis nations after the war and who shall purchase stock-pile materials and during what periods.

ALL technical men who are planning to visit the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago this summer-and all reports indicate that it will be worth visiting-should try to be there during Engineers' Week, beginning June 26. At that time most of the national engineering societies of the country will hold important meetings in that city. Engineers will thus have an opportunity not only to see the Fair at a time when special programs have been arranged for their benefit, but will have the opportunity to meet their professional brothers and to attend technical sessions of direct interest to them. The A.I.M.E. headquarters will be at the Stevens Hotel, and it will be to the interest of every Institute member who expects to attend the Fair at that time to secure his accommodations as promptly as possible. Increasingly the community and government regulators are calling for æzero dischargeÆ mines. Some mining companies are beginning to explore ways in which they can transition to zero discharge. When striving to attain zero discharge, mines must consider multiple variables in addition to water quantity. These include climate regime, water quality and regional water budgets. WITH seventeen papers submitted. and thirteen presented in three sessions, the geophysicists had a most successful meeting at New York in February. The first paper on Monday morning dealt with the location of a diabase dike near Chapel Hill, N. C., by magnetic and resistivity methods. Neste trabalho, blendas de ABS (acrilonitrila-butadieno-estireno) e HIPS (poliestireno de alto impacto) provenientes de carcaças de equipamentos eletro eletrônicos (EEE) foram estudadas. O material foi moído em duas granulometrias diferentes (uma fina e outra grossa). Os corpos de prova para ensaios de tração e impacto de blendas ABS/HIPS na proporção 50/50 (% em massa) foram obtidas diretamente por injeção variando-se a velocidade de dosagem (50, 150 e 300 mm/s) e a granulometria do material moído (fina e grossa). Os corpos de prova obtidos foram caracterizados quanto às suas propriedades mecânicas (resistência à tração e resistência ao impacto). As diferenças obtidas nas propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas através da análise de variância (Anova-fator duplo com repetição). Observou-se que a velocidade de dosagem e a granulometria do material não afetaram significativamente os valores de módulo de elasticidade aparente e deformação na ruptura das blendas obtidas. Já a granulometria mais fina resultou em blendas com uma maior resistência à tração e maior resistência ao impacto, não importando o valor da velocidade de dosagem utilizada durante o processo de injeção.

Today, solutions to optimize Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) & Operational Expenditure (OPEX) for small capacity Cold Rolling Mills (CRM) as well as for high capacity CRM are available, as extensively described by various Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) & steel makers. A suitable solution for small capacity CRM is to start with a single stand reversing mill (up to 400 ktpy, depending on product mix), which can then be expanded into a twin stand mill (up to 900 ktpy, depending on product mix). The main drawbacks in conventional practice are the off-gauge length in single stand set-up and the long downtime of the mill during the erection of the second stand. For higher productions CRM, it is common practice to directly select a new Pickling Line Tandem Cold Mill (PLTCM), with a high CAPEX. Is there an in-between solution that would allow to start with limited output and CAPEX, without jeopardizing the ultimate expansion goal (1.2 to 2 mtpy), for which PLTCM is the best techno-economical choice? In the absence of a solution, JOHN COCKERILL developed an integrated solution that limits the CAPEX in the first phase of development, without crippling affecting future endeavors through an easy and economically sustainable expansion into a PLTCM, without long production downtime. The solution consists of first installing a twin stand mill, expandable into a tandem mill thanks to a smart design of the line. It is therefore possible to limit the production to 900 ktpy in the first phase of the project and then convert the mill into PLTCM in the second phase to increase the production from 1.2 to 2 mtpy, depending on the market trends and financial capabilities. In summary, JOHN COCKERILL has developed a smart new layout in reversing phase combined with a brand new rolling strategy to optimize productivity and limit off-gauge, compared to conventional solutions (patents pending). In addition the layout enables an easy conversion to tandem mill without high over investments, which is more sustainable financially than the initial purchase of a PLTCM. Long downtimes to allow for capacity extension, detrimental to this phase-by-phase approach, are also avoided. Technical and process description of the new layouts and rolling strategies, together with CAPEX & OPEX descriptions of the phases are detailed in this paper.

In 1777, the French naturalist, Georges Louis Leclerc, Compte de Buffon developed a statistical technique to estimate the width between two parallel lines by randomly throwing a needle at the two lines and counting the number of times the needle intersected one of the two lines. By knowing the length of the needle, the distance between the parallel lines could be estimated. This analysis was named the “Buffon’s Needle Problem”.

Os compósitos possuem dois ou mais constituintes físicos. O Brasil produz uma vasta quantidade de fibras vegetais e as utiliza como fase de reforço. A gelatina é obtida da ruptura de ligações covalentes e formam géis termoreversíveis. Sua principal característica, a gelificação, envolve a renaturação da estrutura e, diante do nosso objetivo, foi utilizada como suporte para as fibras já que a gelificação forma uma rede tridimensional. As fibras foram padronizadas em 0,355 mm. A gelatina foi gelatinizada e a solução coloidal vertida em moldes. Os provetes ensaiados conforme ASTM D412. O acréscimo da celulose microcristalina não altera os resultados da tensão de ruptura. O módulo de elasticidade respondeu de forma inversamente proporcional ao aumento do teor de fibras vegetais. O aumento da resistência à tração e do alongamento do material, porém, não na mesma proporção, faz com que haja uma diminuição de seu módulo elástico. O módulo de elasticidade tende a diminuir devido ao grande alongamento ao passo em que o teor de fibras vegetais e gelatina aumenta. A variação do teor de fibras vegetais e gelatina alterou significativamente os resultados dos ensaios de tração. A tensão de ruptura aumentou proporcionalmente ao aumento do teor de fibras vegetais. O alongamento também aumentou com o aumento do teor de gelatina, não sofrendo variações significativas em relação à variação do teor de fibras vegetais.

Os compósitos poliméricos com fibras naturais são geralmente fabricados com a técnica de moldagem por compressão a frio ou a quente, na qual as fibras são as compactadas com resina em um molde. Em geral, a matriz deve ser feita de um aço resistente à fratura, à fadiga e dureza adequada, pois grandes esforços são utilizados na prensagem do material entre 100 a 300°C. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da temperatura na dureza dos aços SAE 8620 e SAE 8640. Amostras foram submetidas ao tratamento térmico de têmpera a 900oC e revenimento na faixa de 150 a 650ºC. Posteriormente foram lixadas e polidas conforme os métodos convencionais de preparação metalográfica. Na revelação da microestrutura utilizou-se o reagente Nital 2%. Para avaliar a influência da temperatura foram feitas medidas de dureza Rockwel C e análises microestruturais das amostras. Os resultados mostraram que os materiais apresentam uma microestrutura típica de martensita revenida após têmpera e revenido. No entanto, a dureza é superior a 45 RC somente para o aço SAE 8640 até revenimento de 350°C. Conclui-se, portanto, que apenas o aço SAE 8640 é adequado para fabricação de moldes para moldagem a quente de compósitos poliméricos.

Laboratórios realizam o ensaio para determinação da tenacidade à fratura KIC, mas para verificar a validade dos resultados, é importante que se estime a incerteza de medição do ensaio. O Guia para Expressão da Incerteza de Medição (GUM) apresenta um método reconhecido internacionalmente para se estimar a incerteza de ensaios quantitativos. O presente trabalho apresenta o desdobramento das etapas do GUM para o ensaio de KIC e a aplicação da planilha e do procedimento elaborados em um ensaio. Ao final, é realizada a análise crítica de quais fontes mais contribuíram para a incerteza de medição do ensaio executado.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar as possíveis transformações microestruturais ocorridas em um aço de alta dureza submetido a altas taxas de deformação induzida por impacto balístico de um projetil 7,62x51 mm perfurante (Pf). Este aço, produzido por siderúrgicas nacionais, compõe o quadro de materiais nacionais usados como blindagens para proteção veicular. Após o ensaio balístico, a microestrutura do material “como recebido” e da região adjacente ao impacto, foi analisada por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados comprovaram o surgimento da microestrutura conhecida por banda de cisalhamento adiabático nos impactos que produziram perfuração, ou seja, penetração completa do projetil, de acordo com o critério da Marinha.

In this paper we will discuss the benefits of a very innovative way of introducing MgO in the blast furnace operation through the sinter, using mini lumps of dunite. By changing the traditional way of using an MgO bearing material in fines form (particle smaller than 5 mm), most of the MgO inserted material behaves as inert during the sintering process, with the effect of having the following parameters (among others) improved: productivity at the sintering bed, permeability inside the blast furnace, energy consumption, stability of the operation.

n recent years, the market for thick plates has been highly competitive, in this scenario the plates quality is a critical success factor. In this process, the quality of the cut in thick plates is one of the important requirements for the customers, by the visual aspect as well as the technical aspect of the plate application. In the shear line, the cutting is done by shearing to trim tips, subdivide plates, trim side edges, remove samples, eliminate defects, etc. The cut is obtained by the penetration of the upper knife in the plate, causing plastic deformation in a certain region and hardening. If the clearance between the knives is adequate, the cracks will be close to the centre of the plate thickness and will result in a good cut quality. This work will present the theory of cutting of thick plates, the types of shearing, the quality of the edge in the cut, the types and the main characteristics of the knives.

O estudo do sopro de oxigênio no EOF é muito complexo e envolve diferentes fenômenos, incluindo o desenvolvimento do jato supersônico, a interação do jato com o ambiente ao seu redor e o banho metálico, onde ocorrem importantes reações. No presente trabalho, diferentes alternativas de desenho de lança e bicos e arranjos desses no interior do EOF são desenvolvidos a interação do jato supersônico com o ambiente do banho metálico foi caracterizada. Para o EOF, o objetivo foi determinar a melhor combinação de variação de injetores e vazões para alcançar o menor tempo de mistura, estabelecendo um novo padrão operacional. Os injetores tiveram pouca relevância no tempo de mistura. Ventaneiras e lanças supersônicas apresentaram os menores tempos de mistura. A lanças supersônicas tem influência nos mecanismos de movimento do banho e projeção de material líquido no EOF, enquanto as ventaneiras afetam o movimento do banho.

Occasionally, in the design of deep foundations for a structure, a single deep foundation element may be used to support a building column. The most common type of element used in such cases is a drilled shaft (also referred to as a drilled pier, caisson, or bored pile). However, as installation capabilities have improved, large diameter augercast piles are increasingly more common. While drilled shafts and augercast piles differ significantly in construction methods, in the eyes of the International Building Code (IBC), both are treated as cast-in-place deep foundations and must comply with many of the same code provisions. Deep foundations are required to be braced such that lateral stability is provided in all directions, however isolated, cast-in-place elements that have a diameter (D) of at least 2-feet and a length (L) not more than 12 times the diameter can be an exception. In response to the concerns raised by some member professionals, the Deep Foundations Institute’s (DFI) Augered Cast-in-Place Pile and Drilled Displacement Pile Committee took a closer look at the code and its applications, the historical development of the code language through the years and performed analytical modeling to evaluate the impact of this ratio on a pile’s stability. The question is whether the limiting ratio included in the IBC 2018 code provisions is justified, or whether different criteria should be used to determine when isolated deep foundation members are allowed.

THE story of the rolling of strip steel is not limited to any one plant or individual or group of individuals. It is a story with many ramifications. First of all, it should be understood that the strip mills we are considering are continuous mills, in that the steel passes directly from one mill to the other in a more or less straight line. Continuous mills are not new; in fact, they have been used for many years in the rolling of a few simple shapes. They were, however, driven by one motor through jackshafts, and as a result the speed of each roll stand had a fixed relation to that of every other stand in the series. This in turn fixed the reduction that could be made in each stand. The mill could produce simple things, but was not satisfactory for the production of the variety of strip now required. DURING the closing month of 1929, Walter Douglas found his health impaired by the strain of many difficult years of alternating prosperity and depression, and in April 1930 resigned the presidency of Phelps Dodge. Douglas was succeeded by Louis S. Cates. The choice broke a tradition that had been held inviolate for almost a hundred years. For the first time in its long history, the direction of the company's policies and operations was entrusted to a stranger without previous Phelps Dodge background, training, experience, or tradition. But the choice was wisely made. For a time at least, the path of Phelps Dodge was to run through rough and dubious ground, and no man in the United States was better qualified to blaze that trail than Louis Cates. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cates had served a rough and financially un- profitable apprenticeship at one of the century-old mining camps of Chihuahua, Mexico.
