Este artigo descreve a utilização da proteção cerâmica do composto SiO2(62-68)-MgO+CaO(29-39) na região frontal das máquinas que injetam massa refratária para interromper corridas de ferro gusa e escória em estado líquido nos altos fornos. O novo modelo de proteção (protótipo) apresentou uma economia de aproximadamente R$ 32 mil reais comparado com o composto anteriormente utilizado CaO-Al2O3-SiO2. Apresentou também menor toxidade, já que possui em sua morfologia menor quantidade de fibras. Estas fibras quando inaladas provocam danos aos tecidos internos dos pulmões sendo prejudicial à saúde. Houve manutenção dos índices de produção, pois em todas as amostras da nova proteção cerâmica testada, a parte frontal foi preservada possibilitando a injeção de massa refratária na quantidade e pressão necessárias para reconstituição do comprimento do furo que retira o ferro e escória do interior do alto forno, possibilitando um volume interno maior para se produzir mais. Os modelos de proteção usados nos testes foram da empresa Morganite. A verificação da morfologia e posterior caracterização do material foram executadas por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura e Difração de Raios-X.

O Steel Frame é um sistema construtivo eficiente e sustentável. Sua estrutura é em perfis de aço e pode suportar até 4 pavimentos, e sua fundação é em radie. Por isso, os perfis da base são revestidos de manta asfáltica para serem protegidos de agentes degradantes. Após algum tempo, a manta perde sua eficácia, expondo o perfil ao meio. O objetivo dessa pesquisa é explicar a corrosão do perfil, através da investigação por MEV, EDS e teste de tração, mostrando a influência do concreto no mesmo, mediante a determinação de suas características mecânicas após o contato. Os resultados mostram difusão dos elementos do concreto no aço, afetando suas propriedades mecânicas através do aumento de limite de resistencia a tração e redução do módulo de elasticidade. Houve também redução na superfície de zinco, mostrando principio de corrosão.

O presente estudo teve por objetivo verificar a independência tanto da Curva Limite de Tensão (CLT), quanto da Curva Limite de Deformação Plástica Efetiva (CLDPE) em relação à trajetória de deformação. Para tal, foram utilizadas Curvas Limite de Conformação (CLC) de aço livre de intersticiais (Interstitial Free - IF), determinadas, primeiramente, por meio de trajetórias lineares e, posteriormente, por trajetórias bi-lineares estabelecidas por níveis de pré-deformação nos modos de tração uniaxial e estiramento biaxial simétrico. As previsões da CLT e da CLDPE, calculadas a partir das deformações limites da CLC convencional em trajetórias lineares e bi-lineares, mostraram-se independentes em relação à trajetória de deformação. Entretanto, verificou-se que o critério de escoamento adotado tem grande influência na forma e posição destas curvas limites.

The aim of this research is the study of the WHIMS parameters on the improving process of a local (DD: Djebel Debbagh, East of Algeria) kaolin. The obtained results of performed XRF, SEM, and XRD characterization showed that this local material is an alumino-silicate containing kaolinite and halloysite with MnO and Fe2O3 impurities (respectively 39.30% and 34.67% alumina and 38.18% and 39.70% silica in both samples (DD2 and DD3). After homogenization, crushing, and milling, a multiparameters factorial experimentation (grain sizes, intensity, and dimension of matrix balls) showed that WHIMS is an effective process to improve the quality of this kaolin, mainly: removing their impurities. Dimensions of matrix balls (Db) = 2 cm, intensity of the applied magnetic field (I) = 1.5 T, and grain sizes (Dp) = > 100 < 250 μm) are the optimal values to reach 91.06% for manganese and 93.45% for iron as removing yield. The statistical analysis of these results sorted the investigation parameters and showed that Db has the highest and most significant influence on the recovery of iron and manganese particles. The magnetic field intensity (I) has a less important influence while the grain size has an average influence (positive on the iron recovery but a negative one on the recovery of manganese).

O moinho vertical normalmente é dimensionado através da aplicação de um fator de eficiência sobre o Índice de Trabalho de Bond (BWI) ou sobre o consumo específico de energia (kWh/t) obtido através de teste em moinho de bolas de laboratório. Para confirmar o dimensionamento do moinho vertical são realizados testes em escala piloto com grandes volumes de amostras. O presente trabalho apresenta uma metodologia para simulação de moinho vertical através de testes de moagem em escala de laboratório utilizando um moinho de bolas convencional e amostras bitoladas em diferentes faixas granulométricas. A amostra de minério de ferro estudada foi utilizada em uma campanha de testes em escala piloto com moinho vertical. As simulações realizadas utilizando a metodologia de Austin apresentaram muito boa correlação com os resultados dos testes em escala piloto.

It has been said that safety promotion passes through four stages--the band-playing, the machine-guarding, the protective equipment, and finally the educational stage; the last is the most important in the development of the safety program. It has been estimated that only 15 percent of accidents can be pre- vented by machine guarding and protective equipment; the other 85 percent must be stopped by the safety efforts of the individual workers and their supervisory officials, and one of the fundamentals of safety work is the education of workers to develop safety consciousness or safety mindedness. One way of educating men to think about safety is by the use of posters. Safety engineers at the Calumet 2 Hecla mines in Michigan have been conduct- ing a safety contest among the men by the use of posters of an unusual type in addition to those usually employed to illustrate bad practices and to display the number of days without a lost-time accident. The first requisite for the success of the safety poster is a good artist or draftsman; in the poster contest instituted at the Calumet & Hecla mines two sheets were prepared illustrating various conditions in the slope workings, including a large number of unsafe practices. The object of the contest was to get the men to think about safety through criticism of the unsafe conditions displayed on the posters. The following notice accom- panied the posters:

A Niobras é uma empresa do grupo China Molybdenum Internacional (CMOC), recentemente adquirida do grupo Anglo American, que extrai e beneficia minério de nióbio proveniente da Mina Boa Vista, situada no município de Catalão – GO, e transforma o concentrado de pirocloro em liga de ferro – nióbio em seu site situado em Ouvidor/GO, sendo este o produto final comercializado. A extração de minério na Mina Boa Vista iniciou-se no ano de 2000 com o objetivo de alimentar a Planta de Concentração Boa Vista com minério oxidado, para manter o nível de produção de nióbio, uma vez que a antiga mina estava em processo de exaustão. Com a exaustão do minério oxidado prevista para 2016, em 2011 foi desenvolvido um projeto chamado BVFR (Boa Vista Fresh Rock) para produção de nióbio através da extração e beneficiamento de minério contido em rocha fresca. O Projeto BVFR foi aprovado no início de 2012, concluído em outubro de 2014 e foram investidos mais de US$ 350 milhões para sua implantação. O Projeto BVFR aumenta a vida útil da mina (Life Of Mine) e do negócio em 20 anos, triplica a produção de nióbio da Niobras e incrementa o EBTIDA em mais de 250% e gerou um aumento de mais de 400 empregos diretos (entre contratadas e próprios).

Blindagens balísticas são projetadas para resistir a uma determinada ameaça com a menor relação peso/resistência balística possível, isto é, oferecer a melhor resistência à penetração de projéteis e fragmentos provenientes de armas de fogo com menor peso. Os materiais compósitos são, atualmente, aqueles que possuem a maior probabilidade de obter estes requisitos, por possuírem flexibilidade de alcançarem o conjunto de propriedades mais apropriadas para cada nível de proteção e por serem mais leves. Os compósitos reforçados por tecidos de fibra sintética são atualmente os mais utilizados. Com o foco nos aspectos ambientais, este trabalho produziu e avaliou um compósito híbrido laminado de matriz polimérica reforçado por manta de curauá e tecido de poliamida aromática. O compósito foi avaliado segundo o tipo de falha ocorrida após o ensaio balístico, utilizando a análise por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), bem como, a análise visual. Por meio da análise dos resultados, foi possível observar que o processo de microdelaminações na interface matriz/tecidos, bem como as falhas intralamelares (trincas na matriz) proporcionaram uma maior dissipação da energia de impacto.

No cenário econômico atual do mercado siderúrgico, otimizações de processo que aumentem o rendimento metálico estão no alvo das empresas competitivas. Além disso, cada vez mais os clientes exigem níveis mais elevados de qualidade e menor índice de recusa. Neste contexto, desenvolver trabalhos que conciliem otimização e garantia de qualidade são prioritários para o negócio. O objetivo deste trabalho é definir o menor descarte de início de lingotamento para aços com aplicações severas com total garantia de qualidade. Foi elaborada uma metodologia específica para avaliação da qualidade dos produtos: placa e bobina laminada a quente. Primeiramente, avaliou-se a quantidade de inclusões não metálicas em placas, o que permitiu determinar o comprimento de descarte mínimo necessário para garantia de qualidade das placas. Posteriormente, análises de inclusões também foram realizadas em bobinas para confirmar os resultados da ação de alteração de tonelagem de descarte. Os resultados mostraram que as placas produzidas após o descarte determinado pelo estudo resultaram em bobinas aptas para atendimento das aplicações, sem nenhuma perda de qualidade.

Thin brittle coatings are deposited or developed on component surfaces for different reasons. In many practical applications the coatings are stressed by externally applied loads. Under such conditions, coating failure can occur. In this paper the probability of the extension of surface crack in coated materials due to cylindrical sliding indentation is analyzed. Contact loading problems typically result in multi-axle and strongly inhomogeneous stress fields near the contact surface. This property which strongly affects the stress intensity factors is taken into account in the failure analysis. Edge cracks were selected to model the actually accruing surface flaws. A suitable method is described for calculating the contact stress fields in coating and substrate. The coating is idealized as a brittle-elastic layer of uniform thickness, which is bonded to the surface of a half space. Method of linear elastic fracture mechanics are then used to calculate the load required to cause fracture in the coating.

DUMBLE, Houston, Tex.-This paper is a continuation of one that was published by Mr. Garfias, I believe, in the Journal of Geology, 1912, in which he gave the results of his investigations in Mexico, showing that the basalt extrusions frequently did not come up as cones. but reached the surface as a small neck and then mushroomed out into a sill, penetrating the beds both in limestones and in shales. He has continued his investigations to show that as these basalt protrusions came up they forced the strata into a funnel shape at the top instead of throwing them out altogether. While this may be true concerning these particular beds, there are other places at which the basalt does appear clearly as cones and dories, and there the funnel structure does not exist. We know that the sills are there, because we find them in the wells. In one well that I know of. we found a 2-ft. sill of basalt at about 1600 ft. and oil below it at about 2100 ft.; others have gone through similar beds. We also know that there. are cones, because north of the Ranuco River one well struck basalt at about 800 ft. and continued in it for several hundred feet-did not pass through it at all. This paper of Mr. Garfias will give us considerable help in that oil field. W. E. WRATHER, Wichita Falls, Tex.-I would like to ask for information as to the temperatures of Mexican oils. I have heard a number of conflicting reports about the high temperatures of the water and oil, and the relationship between them.

Austria produced approximately 800 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each (56,000 bbls.) of crude oil of a 0.9428 sp. gr. during 1935. Of this Gosting II well near Zistersdorf, owned by the Erdolproduktions-Gesellschaft m.b.H., produced 86 per cent of the total, averaging a little over 1.8 cisterns, or about 125 bbl., per day. Gosting IVa of the same company was put in production early in December and produced a total of about 70 cisterns (4900 bbl.). Gosting IV was a failure, but a directional hole drilled from the same derrick produced Gosting IVa. Gosting I, a well owned jointly by the company above mentioned and the Raky-Danubia, was deepened late in the year and made about 2800 bbl. of oil at the rate of 70 bbl. per day. Completions during the year were as follows: In the Gosting pool, Gosting IV and IVa, drilled with rotary tools, the latter producing from Sarmat at a depth of 934 meters (3065 ft.); Kronberg I, of European Gas & Electric Co. with cable tools in Flysch at a depth of 566 m. as a dry hole; in the Oberlaa gas pool, one cable-tool well of the same company at a depth of 266 m. as a dry hole and one Fauck-Haiek system well of the Vacuum Oil Co. at a depth of 483 m. as a dry hole; one rotary hole of the European Gas & Electric Co. at Enzersdorf a/d. Fischa plugged and abandoned in Sarmat after a blow out and gas eruption at a depth of 699.5 meters. The information on viscosity and surface tension of molten slag is indispensable to design new refining procedures in ferrous and non-ferrous processes. For example, the authors have tried to develop "Capillary Refining" to remove impurities in liquid metals by applying capillary absorption of molten slag with those impurities into solid fluxes which have a lot of small capillary tubes. It is necessary to adjust the above physico-chemical properties to adequate conditions on the capillary penetration. In the present paper, we discuss our recent trial to predict surface tension and viscosity of molten slag in multi-component systems. We have derived a thermodynamic model to predict the surface tension of molten slag by using ionic size, molar volume and surface tension of pure components. In addition, we have applied neural network computation to evaluate the viscosity of molten slag. We found good agreement of the calculated results with experimental values of the surface tension as well as the viscosity in various slag systems.

In this paper the influence of temperature on the flow behavior and rheological characteristics of an A356 alloy in the semi-solid state using backward extrusion process are studied experimentally and numerically. Simulation process is done by dynamic explicit in ABAQUS software for each forming condition. A cooling slope treatment was employed in order to obtain a non-dendritic microstructure. Experiments were performed in 5 temperatures and 4 different wall thicknesses. In the low forming speeds, liquid fraction had time to escape from solid phase forward the samples? wall. This condition was the main reason for the segregation phenomenon seen in the base and walls. Viscosities were determined using the force-displacement graphs obtained form back-extrusion tests. As observed experimentally, in a constant temperature, increase of shear rate resulted in decrease of alloy viscosity exponentially. Raising the temperature increases the liquid fraction hence reduces the semi-solid alloy viscosity. The results of experimental and simulation are compared and there is a good adaptation.

Lebowa Platinum Mines has been in operation since the late 1960s and is a relatively small producer compared to Anglo Platinum?s other operations. The mine has never had substantial capital investment to expand its production scale even though its resource base is estimated in excess of 100 years at current mining rates. It is forecast that the mine will become unprofitable after 2008 due to the workings of the ageing infrastructure, the Merensky Reef operations being further from the shafts, decrease in productivity and increase in operating costs. In order to reverse the forecast decline in operational inefficiencies and profitability the replacement of the Merensky Reef operations at Vertical and UM2 shafts with the development of a 120 Ktpm Brakfontein Merensky Reef Mines is in progress. This paper covers the operational readiness framework developed from the control budget estimate and outlines an integrated business process adopted to ensure that the requirements of the investment proposal are met. The operational readiness framework, which addresses the transition process, will ensure that at operational start-up, all appropriate operating systems, procedures, information and legal requirements are in place, whereas the business integration process will aim to develop and sustain an organization with the appropriate infrastructure and workforce equipped with the necessary skills to meet Brakfontein?s requirement, and where possible embark on an optimized accelerated production initiative to ensure that the objectives of the investment proposal are sustained. A computer model for predicting the rate of oxidative leaching of copper from fragmented low grade sulfide ores is presented. The model involves the kinetics of the dissolution of chalcopyrite grains and solution diffusion of oxygen within rock pores. Adjustable curve fitting parameters are not used. The model was tested by comparing computed extraction curves with experimental results for a -11 inch ore obtained by block caving and leached at 90°C and 400 psi oxygen for one year at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratories.

The major waste product of the alkaline extraction of alumina from bauxite (Bayer Process) is known as red mud. Approximately one ton of red mud is produced for every two tons of bauxite mined. The red mud produced from Jamaican bauxite is rich in hematite, alumina and titanium oxide. It has been shown that more than 90% (by weight) alumina can be recovered from red mud by soda ash sintering and caustic leaching. Hematite can be carbothermically reduced with a degree of metallization of more than 94%, resulting in attempts, for magnetic separation. These separations are desirable because there are no waste products generated. Consequently, there is an opportunity for complete utilization of the waste material. Conversely, the preseparated material could be charged through the tuyeres in an iron blast furnace, or it could be smelted to produce pig iron. If smelted, the concentration of titanium oxide in the slag would be high enough to justify its recovery by an established acid-leach process. This paper describes the results of alumina recovery and the plans for titanium oxide recovery from red-mud. In addition, the situation of ongoing efforts in iron extraction, particularly, the method of magnetic separation of the reduced material. The problems associated with the use of reduced red mud as an alternative to direct-reduced iron (DRI) is also discussed. Fisheries make a significant regional contribution to the economy of Canada. In the Atlantic Region, over 70 thousand workers depend on the primary or secondary fishing industry. Fisheries are vulnerable to pre-emption of space by other marine industries and to contamination by chemical discharges. Markets may be affected even by the threat that products may be tainted. Fish may be killed by drags and dredges, and their physiology and behaviour affected by suspended sediments are stirred up by mechanical devices. Virtually no evidence exists of adverse impacts £ran ocean mining on fisheries, but projections from other marine activities such as fishing itself, dredging and other marine discharges give reason for caution. Department of Fisheries and Oceans policy calls for review of ocean mining proposals to ensure adequate protection of fish stocks, fishing activities and fish habitat, and compensation for losses attributable to any industrial project. Adverse impacts can be minimized by careful attention to details of location, technology and timing, and to close co-operation and information exchange between industry and the regulatory agencies.
