General: National Asbestos Mines Limited has operated an asbestos mine and mill near Thetford Mines, Quebec, since 1958. As a result of additional exploration of the orebody in 1962-63, it became apparent that long-range mining plans would have to be revised to allow for a large increase in both ore and waste tonnages. It was decided that the task of checking out possible mine designs could best be analyzed by a computer to obtain data from which an optimum open-pit configuration could be plotted. Object: It was desired to arrive at an optimum open-pit configuration with an over-all pit slope of 45 degrees and a minimum operational width of 200 ft. at the bottom. Calculations were based on assay values from diamond drill holes in cross sections of the mine. The computer's assignment was to select and describe, by coordinates, the optimum cross section for the mine. Mine engineers then assembled the various optimum sections to produce the pit outline. As this would not necessarily result in a practical mining arrangement, the computer also provided alternate solutions,

"This paper offers a case history of piled raft foundation in soft ground supporting a twelve-story building in Tokyo. To increase bearing capacity of the soft soil as well as a countermeasure of liquefaction, grid-form deep cement mixing walls (DMWs) were employed with the piled raft. Based on the long-term monitoring results, the ratio of the load carried by the DMWs to the effective structure load after the construction of the raft was estimated to be 0.3 while that carried by the piles was 0.7. In order to clarify the contribution of the DMWs to bearing the structure load, numerical simulation of the settlement and the load sharing among the piles, the DMWs and the unstabilized soil was performed using a three-dimensional finite element model. The results of the numerical simulation agreed well with the measured values, when the Young’s modulus of the DMWs obtained from the unconfined compressive tests was adopted and the shear modulus of the soft soil was reduced to 50% of that at small strains.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, piled raft foundations have been used in many countries as building foundations. The effectiveness of piled rafts in reducing average and differential settlements has been confirmed not only on favorable ground conditions as shown by Katzenbach et al. (2000), Poulos (2001) and Mandolini et al. (2005), but also on unfavorable ground conditions such as soft clay and/or liquefiable sand using ground improvement technique (Yamashita et al., 2011a; Yamashita et al., 2011b; Yamashita et al. 2013). Grid type ground improvement using the Deep Mixing Method has been applied to sandy ground as a countermeasure of liquefaction to increase liquefaction resistance of unstabilized soil left in the grid walls where its shear deformation during seismic motion is reduced by the confinement effect of the grid walls (Kitazume, 2013). The high applicability of the method was demonstrated in the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake (Tokimatsu et al., 1996; Uchida et al., 2012a; Uchida et al., 2012b).This paper offers a case history of piled raft foundation in soft ground supporting a twelve-story building in Tokyo. "In recent years, use of mineral processing tailings as a paste backfill has been significantly increased due to the environmental problems occurred during the disposal of the tailings in mine area. The paste material used to fill the stopes excavated is generally consisted of tailings (solid ratio: 70–85%) and cement (3-7%w/w). Meanwhile, the strength of the paste material is completely related to ratios of these materials. Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) system is used as support depending on the roof pressure and also as an underground disposal method. Therefore, temporary strength value of the paste material gains a great importance. For example, the paste backfill material must compensate the minimum 4 MPa strength value in order to procure the permanent fortification, and the mixture cost must be minimal as well. For this reason, in this study, the Pb-Zn tailings were used to prepare for the paste backfill material using cement in order to perform the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests. Additionally, a statistical experimental design and linear programming techniques was used to find the optimum mixture in terms of strength and cost. The pulp solid ratios (PSR) of the tailings and cement (by the solid) were varied as 75-85% and 3-8%, respectively. The results of this study; the optimum mixture is ~79.5%PSR and 6.8% cement ratio (by the solid) for 4 MPa UCS (28 day) and 16-17 cm slump value determined by this method with statistically reviewed experimental data. INTRODUCTION Fine-grained tailing waste materials resulting from mining activities are an important environmental problem. In terms of environmental protection, the use of tailings with paste backfill is a very attractive approach and a desirable solution to tailings management. Paste backfill, which is used to fill underground openings, is made by primarly mine tailings mixed with hydraulic binders and water. Its main benefits are not only disposal of mine tailings in underground, but also providing a certain strength to ensure a safe working environment. Therefore, it is necessary to use hydraulic binders due to durability of the system (Benzaazoua et al., 2004). Paste backfill, formed from the mix of dewatered plant tailings (75-85 wt. % solids), water and binder (3-8 wt. %) (Brackebusch, 1994; Landriault et al., 2005).Water is used to determine the chemical reactions between tailing and binder materials for strength as well as increasing pumpability. Portland cement and ash can be used as binder materials (Douglas and Malhotra, 1987). The factors which affect strength and stability of paste backfill separate into two groups called interior and exterior factors. Interior and exterior factors determine the strength, stability and deformation features of backfill in short and long terms and also affect the transportation of backfill to underground (Benzaazoua et al., 2004; Erçikdi et al., 2006; Yilmaz et al., 2010; Nasir and Fall, 2010). Material properties of tailings as well as site operations to fill the underground openings are the most important steps for the design purposes. Grain size distribution, chemical, and physical properties of tailings, and mechanical properties of paste fill material are used to understand the suitability of tailings as paste fill material (Ozturk et al., 2014). In addition, Fig. 1. is also proposed to apply a typical design for the operational stages of paste fill applications on the site."

"Traditional techniques for valuing resource projects companies have been primarily based on discounted cashflow methods (DCF) or by comparison to similar projects with an apparent market capitalization. Many resource projects are really forms of options to invest rather than a future cashflow stream. Employing the DCF method to value a resource project which is really an option to invest, can dramatically underestimate the real value of the project. The analytical tools required to evaluate options, while more complicated than the usual spreadsheets used for DCF, are becoming more easily available and usable by managers. This paper will discuss the background of options valuation and some of the tools which will make it easier for managers to estimate the value of projects and companies which have significant real option values.ResumeBob McKnight is a graduate of the University of British Columbia in Geological Engineering, supplemented by an MBA from Simon Fraser University. They were familiar to Roman and Phoenician traders who were shipping cargoes from Mediterranean seaports. In the financial world, options are types of contracts that generally include the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a share, currency or commodity. The underlying commodity price or share price changes are assumed to be lognormally distributed. In this context, options are of two general types, ""call"" options and ""put"" options. Call options have the characteristic of having the right to buy a tradable commodity or currency at a predetermined price for a specified period of time. For the owner of call options, they become more valuable as the price of the underlying commodity increases. For the seller of call options, these options become an increasing liability as commodity prices rise, since there is the obligation to sell the commodity at a predetermined (perhaps lower-than-market) price. This characteristic of call options recently became high profile with the sharp rise in gold prices last year. The value of gold call options sold by certain producers increased their associated liabilities to the point where margin calls were made."

A relatively unexplored lead zinc deposit lies about 12 miles northwest of Revelstoke, B.C., in the highly metamorphosed Monashee Group of rocks of the Shuswap Terrane, Precambrian in age. Host rocks are of sedimentary origin and consist of gneisses, schists, marbles and quartzites with intermediary types. The marbles and quartzites provide good horizon markers. Using these it is possible to interpret the controlling structure which is a syncline overturned to the north, dipping south at about 45°, and plunging east at about 12°. The syncline is truncated at about halfway of its length on a peak on the west side of which a partial cross section together with superimposed minor folds may be seen. The quartzites and the two marble beds may be traced over much of the structure. There are two lodes, above the marble and below the quartzite, which converge eastward and which are the exposed edges of the same host bed -an impure limestone.

In the past decades, a technological explosion has caused generational shifts. First, millennials experienced a technological shift to computers and cellphones. Next, Generation Z experienced a shift to smart phones and social media. These two generations are immersed in technology and are accustomed to constant connectivity. How do the extractive and construction industries gain the interest of younger generations and integrate them into the industry? The Virginia Tech Student Chapter of the International Society of Explosives Engineers handled this same issue with its recruitment efforts and event planning from 2017-2019. The first critical component of integrating Generation Z college students into the extractive industries is clear and frequent communication via email. Next, Generation Z often values the motivation behind work when choosing a career, so advertising technological advancements, benefits, and ways people can contribute to improving the industry also helps attract young generations. Similarly, advertising opportunities for people to work outside with their hands, travel, and secure stable careers can attract students. At Virginia Tech, the most effective way to attract and maintain the interest of students in extractive industries is to put the students in the field. Field trips to mines and factories experienced the most stable attendance and highest survey reviews of all other chapter events. Guest presentations from industry professionals were often well attended, but attendance tapered off as the academic year progressed and students grew busier. Periodic trips throughout the year maintained student engagement and often supplemented their curriculum. The student chapter was relatively successful in attracting students, but it struggled to maintain attendance levels in the latter portion of the academic year. In the future, the industry can increase its recruitment of Generation Z and Millennials into the workforce by working more closely with university programs to provide resources and opportunities for hands-on experiences for students.

The use of resin-grouted cable supports to control large ground movements in several types of underground mines has increased substantially since being introduced in 1991. Cables offer several advantages over traditional support systems, having large support capacities coupled with the flexibility to be used in low openings. Cable slings have been designed to be installed on-cycle using no-spin technology or a two-piece unit that can be placed with hand-held drilling equipment. Additionally, yielding cable supports have been developed and are being used to control large amounts of movement in coal and evaporite deposits.

Considered as a whole, the mineral resources of the Turkish Republic (Anatolia) are in their untapped virgin state, and the little development shown is not the result of modern systematic geologic exploration but the continuation of the ancient open-pit mining methods of the Orient. When I came to Turkey in 1924, I found myself confronted by a formidable task because of the lack of preliminary geologic mapping. Today this condition has not essentially changed; less than one per cent of the country is covered by topographic mapping adequate for modern requirements. However, I was able to bring a semblance of order in a presentation of the mineral deposits of this country, by tracing the story of the mineral deposits that showed surface evidence of their existence. At present only the easily discovered mineral deposits of coal, copper, and lead-silver ores are being exploited. In the case of coal, of 3,000,000,000 metric tons available, only 100,000,000 have been mined. The same is also true for copper, lead-silver, and other ores, as shown in Table 1.

ORE tests are made for the purpose of determining the correct methods of treatment for any particular ore. They should be conducted so as to insure that the results obtained in actual mill practice, on ore of similar grade and physical nature, will duplicate the results obtained in the test work. As the expenditure of many thousand of dollars may be involved in the building of the necessary mill, the testing of ores calls for extreme care and skill in handling laboratory machines, and a knowledge of actual practice to guard against the danger of obtaining results in test work that would be impractical to duplicate on a commercial scale. The importance of a correct sample of the ore is at once apparent. No matter with what degree of care the test 4rk is done, it loses its value when made on an unrepresentative sample. It is the first safeguard against future disappointments in the loss of capital and time. A number of failures in the past have been traced directly to faulty or lax methods in obtaining the ore sample.

MANY fields have been zoned by nature with shales and intermediate waters between oil zones. Limitations thus imposed have been the basis on which the field was developed. In contrast thereto, in the Ventura Avenue Field, nature proved more generous. Always expecting to find such similar limitations, operators drilled deeper and deeper into the oil zone without finding any distinctive shale bodies other that the Gosnell shale and only one intermediate water, which became the point below which the final water shut-off of each well was made. Thus, on top of the structure, about 3300 ft. of oil-bearing zone has been penetrated below this intermediate w9ter-a distance of 4000 ft. below the Gosnell shale. At first it seemed that the greater the penetration in the zone, the better the well. The error of this assumption became evident

As maiores pressões e temperaturas atualmente empregadas a fim de aumentar a produtividade de fornos de DRI têm resultado em um subproduto indesejado: o aumento da geração de clusters. Estes clusters prejudicam o fluxo da carga e a permeabilidade do leito. A fim de limitar o tamanho destes aglomerados o forno MIDREX dispõe de três conjuntos de quebradores localizados em diferentes posições do forno após a redução da carga. A interação entre clusters e esses quebradores, entretanto, pode também prejudicar o fluxo da carga e aumentar a geração de finos. O trabalho utilizou o método dos elementos discretos (DEM) para avaliar as energias e forças resultantes da interação entre os clusters formados e os quebradores. A descrição dos clusters foi realizada usando o bonded-particle model, disponível no EDEM. Simulações mostraram que a presença de clusters altera as forças e velocidades no entorno dos quebradores que tenderiam a aumentar a geração de finos no reator.

Nos últimos anos a indústria siderúrgica no Brasil vem sofrendo um processo lento e cruel de encolhimento de sua participação no PIB, em decorrência de diversos fatores políticos e econômicos. Apesar do grande esforço por parte das empresas, a capacidade de produção de aço pouco cresceu neste período, permitindo que as despesas cresçam mais rápido do que as receitas. Esses fatores têm mostrado aos profissionais do setor que a mudança do cenário só ocorrerá ao se produzir com o máximo de eficiência. O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar que a lubrificação tem grande participação no aumento da produtividade e redução de custos da manutenção. Em suma, será apresentado um estudo sobre como a lubrificação correta influencia no aumento da produtividade das siderúrgicas. Com base nos resultados dos testes realizados em duas grandes empresas do setor, este trabalho demonstra o aumento significativo de performance no Mandril da bobinadeira e mancais dos convertedores, após estudo detalhado da lubrificação.

O presente trabalho mostra o desenvolvimento de um produto, até então não comercializado pela CSN/PR, criado para o aproveitamento da capacidade ociosa de seu laminador reversível a frio. Historicamente, a produção do laminador era direcionada exclusivamente para o abastecimento de uma linha de galvanização contínua, mas trabalhos bem sucedidos para o aumento da produtividade do laminador resultaram em capacidade excedente do equipamento. Diante desse cenário, a comercialização de bobinas Full Hard se tornou uma opção viável para a abertura de mercado e aumento de competitividade, frente a atual pressão imposta por produtos importados. Visitas aos potenciais clientes foram necessárias para o levantamento das características importantes a seus processos produtivos e adequação dos parâmetros utilizados no laminador reversível. Atualmente o produto está homologado e sendo fornecido a clientes externos, e espera-se o aumento da carteira, dependendo apenas da evolução do mercado.

The recovery of rare earth metals from secondary sources has attracted much attention due to their ever expanding demand in the high-tech industry. The studies reported here focus on the hydrometallurgical recovery of lanthanum and cerium from spent fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts in a two-step process: leaching with nitric acid and solvent extraction by tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA). The experiments show a high dissolution yield of about 93% lanthanum and 42% cerium in a single leaching step with 2 M (126 g/L) HNO3 at 80 °C; only 11% aluminum has been dissolved simultaneously. In the subsequent solvent extraction step the best results for this leach liquor could be achieved using a 1:1 mixture of 25% (v/v) TBP (0.92 M) and 25% (v/v) D2EHPA (0.76 M) in n-decane without the need for any pH adjustment. In that case La(III) and Ce(III) can be extracted with 60% and 74% yield respectively in one stage from the majority of accompanying matrix elements. In particular no extraction of Al(III) could be observed under these conditions.

The mining and minerals processing industry is gradually being digitalised to improve efficiency and reduce waste. One aspect of this transition is to ensure that relevant process-data in sufficient quality and quantity is given to the operator in the right format and at the right time to improve decision-making. Augmented reality (AR) can serve as a potential ICT-based support tool for human operators to achieve this goal. With AR, virtual information is combined with the real world in real-time. Therefore, AR technology has the potential to fulfil the need for improved data visualisation in Industry 4.0. This article is the result of a collaborative effort of Chalmers University of Technology and RWTH Aachen University to identify selected state-of-the-art applications of AR that are currently being applied in the mining and minerals industry or selected related industries. This paper aims to show opportunities for the application of AR in the mining and mineral processing industry with selected conceptual applications. This paper concludes with several requirements identified as necessary to implement the conceptual applications of AR in the mining and minerals industry. A família de aços avançados de alta resistência – AHSS contempla uma variedade de materiais que são utilizados principalmente na indústria automotiva. Os aços bifásicos incluem-se nesta classe e são assim denominados devido a sua microestrutura composta por ferrita e martensita. Apresentam alta resistência mecânica associada à ductilidade, o que permite a aplicação de grandes esforços em pequenas áreas sem que ocorra fratura. Este trabalho visa verificar, através de caracterização metalográfica, ensaios de tração e anisotropia, as propriedades mecânicas do aço DP600 para trabalho a frio. A curva tensão-deformação de engenharia para este aço foi estabelecida através de ensaios de tração até a ruptura do corpo de prova. Foram obtidos valores médios de 330 MPa para o limite de escoamento, 589 MPa para o limite de resistência à tração e 20% de alongamento. Os índices de anisotropia também foram verificados através de ensaios de tração. Estes resultados foram comparados com valores encontrados na literatura. De um modo geral, as chapas ensaiadas resultaram em uma diferença de valores de aproximadamente 10%, possibilitando sua utilização a frio.

A crescente preocupação em relação às áreas de proteção ambiental e ao alto consumo de argila, matéria-prima da cerâmica vermelha, ocasiona a indisponibilização progressiva de reservas de argilas no Brasil. Com isso, vê-se a necessidade de incorporar resíduos na massa argilosa para confecção de produtos de cerâmica vermelha. A indústria de cerâmica vermelha brasileira consome cerca de 10 milhões de toneladas de argila ao mês para produção de telhas e blocos. Na própria olaria são gerados resíduos, tal como, o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua originado na etapa de conformação das peças. Este trabalho visa incorporar o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua na massa argilosa usada em cerâmica vermelha. O resíduo foi caracterizado por meio de ensaios de FRX, DRX, limites de Atterberg e distribuição de tamanho de partículas. Corpos de prova feitos com massa argilosa e resíduo em teores variando de 10% a 90% (massa) foram conformados, secos à 110ºC, queimados à 900ºC em forno industrial e submetidos a ensaios de absorção de água, porosidade aparente, massa específica aparente e resistência à compressão. Os resultados evidenciaram que as propriedades cerâmicas avaliadas nos corpos de prova da massa argilosa incorporada com o resíduo atendem aos valores das argilas-padrão brasileiras para cerâmica vermelha.

Vários trabalhos voltados a resolução dos problemas da utilização de bentonita no processo de aglomeração de minério de ferro referem-se ao emprego de aglomerantes orgânicos, sendo que os dois tipos principais são os à base de celulose e de poliacrilamidas. Este trabalho teve como objetivo um melhor entendimento da ação de um aglomerante à base de carboximetilcelulose no ganho de resistência mecânica da pelota. Foi avaliada a interação entre a superfície mineral de dois concentrados tipo pellet feed brasileiros e os componentes presentes no aglomerante Peridur de uso comercial. O método proposto e desenvolvido no presente trabalho permitiu comprovar que um mesmo aglomerante atua de maneira diferenciada dependendo do tipo de minério de ferro empregado. Isto reforça a importância do entendimento de como cada produto, utilizado como aglomerante no processo de pelotização, age nos constituintes do minério de ferro para promover o incremento necessário de resistência mecânica das pelotas.

A competitividade do setor automotivo exige maior agilidade na gestão de ferramentas de usinagem. Para atender esta necessidade flexibilizar e automatizar o processo de gestão de armazenagem é fator primordial. As ferramentas de usinagem muitas vezes têm custo elevado e a necessidade de controle constante é imprescindível no setor automotivo. A padronização de armazenagem aliada a um equipamento específico para controlar ferramentas surge como uma opção. Pois, a troca de produtos deve ser ágil durante a fabricação para evitar perdas e máquinas ociosas no chão de fábrica. Assim, suprir esta necessidade com velocidade é essencial e de suma importância para a integração entre os departamentos de produção e logística. Neste cenário, a tecnologia de armazenagem permite agilizar e flexibilizar a gestão de ferramentas de usinagem, além de possibilitar ganhos de produção. Neste trabalho, apresenta-se a substituição do processo manual de armazenagem de ferramentas de usinagem baseado em caixas e prateleiras, por um sistema com tecnologia de armazenagem vertical. Esta substituição permite automatizar o controle de ferramentas, reduzir o custo de estoque e flexibilizar a troca de produtos na produção. Os resultados deste processo permitem garantir a melhor gestão das ferramentas de usinagem, evitar paradas nas linhas, reduzir custos operacionais e manter estoques em perfeito equilíbrio, entre o aumento de produtividade e a redução de custos.
