Aplica como ferramenta principal no suporte da gestão das atividades um sistema informatizado de manutenção, utilizado em toda usina. Utiliza como pilar na gestão das atividades de inspeção conceitos e ferramentas de planejamento, programação e controle e mostra a complexidade de fazer o controle dessas inspeções numa usina do porte dessa Siderúrgica, que possui uma planta industrial enorme tanto no tamanho, quanto no número de equipamentos e processos existentes. Destaca um grande avanço nos resultados obtidos na gestão das atividades de inspeção dos vasos de pressão e caldeira da ArcelorMittal Tubarão.

Preconcentration of precious and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, the development and the operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. Ore preconcentration designates an operation consisting of sorting an ore to reduce the quantity of waste material sent to the concentrator. It can be seen as rejecting waste material as much as possible, without compromising the recovery, or as the recovery of as much valuable metal as possible into an optimum mass yield. Benefits of preconcentration are multiple: grinding energy savings, costs reduction, lower environmental footprint, extension of the reserves, etc. However, all of these benefits do not apply simultaneously and are not applicable to each ore type. Technologies employed for preconcentration are highly dependent on ore properties, especially on the particle size at which the gangue is liberated. Thus, from coarser to finer particle sizes, technologies such as screening, ore sorting, gravity separation (Dense Media Separation (DMS) and jigs) and coarse flotation could be used for the rejection of liberated gangue. The difficulty starts when a benchmark is needed to select a suitable technology, especially for low-grade gold deposits. This paper presents the challenges of comparing lab-scale technologies (DMS versus jig) for gold preconcentration. The experimental data will show to what extent comparing two lab-scale gravity technologies for gold preconcentration can be challenging. An attempt to evaluate the energy savings by assessing the hardness of the tailings after gravity separation will also be presented. Design of embankment dams often requires seismic analyses, or an assessment of earthquakeinduced ground and dam movements. There are a large number of cases where earthquakes have triggered sliding and lateral spreading of embankments, resulting in excessive crest settlements. In some instances, liquefaction and embankment failure has occurred resulting in loss of containment. Hence, evaluation of the effects of earthquakes on embankment dams is a critical design aspect. This paper discusses the methods and the results of a seismic liquefaction assessment and deformation analyses of a tailings dam. The tailings dam consists of a perimeter earth core rockfill starter dam which has been raised using upstream construction methods. The embankment raises (formed by an upstream clay blanket and an all-in rockfill body) are constructed over the impounded tailings, which are potentially liquefiable. Extensive field and laboratory tests were undertaken to assess the liquefaction potential of the tailings, and also determine the material properties required for seismic stability and deformation analyses. Numerical modelling of seismic liquefaction and deformation was carried out using FLAC (Itasca 2016) to predict the magnitude and spatial variation of deformations that may lead to an uncontrolled release of tailings. Primarily based on a parametric assessment of UBCSand and Finn-Byrne constitutive models, the results of the analyses are presented and compared for evaluation.

"Fiber reinforcement has emerged as an alternative to steel bars in precast concrete segments due to advantages such as saving cost and reducing production time while developing a more robust product with improved handling and long-term durability. ACI recently drafted a new report as the first design guideline on FRC tunnel segments to provide specific guidance for this emerging technology. ACI document offers general information on the history of FRC precast segments from tunneling projects throughout the world; a procedure for structural analysis and design based on governing load cases, and a description of the material parameters, tests and analyses required to complete the design. This paper summarizes the design considerations in this ACI guideline prepared by the authors of this paper as the main contributors. Application of this guideline to design of a tunnel with an internal diameter of 5.5 m (18 ft) results in elimination of steel bars.INTRODUCTIONPrecast concrete segments are installed to support the tunnel excavation behind the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in soft ground and weak rock applications. The TBM advances by thrusting off the completed rings of precast concrete segments that provide both the initial and final ground support as part of a one-pass lining system. These segments are typically designed to resist the permanent loads from the ground and groundwater as well as the temporary loads from production, transportation and construction. Tunnel segments are generally reinforced to resist the tensile stresses at both the Serviceability (SLS) and the Ultimate Limit States (ULS). With traditional rebar, a significant amount of labor is needed to assemble the cages and place the rebar, which results in higher production costs.Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) can be used to enhance the production, handling, and placement of precast concrete segments. This is because of the uniform dispersion of fibers throughout the segment to include the concrete cover, which is very advantageous for resisting the bursting and spalling stresses. These stresses develop as a result of the high loads induced on the segments during the TBM jacking process. The presence of fiber in the concrete matrix helps mitigate against unintentional impact loads during segment handling and tunnel construction operations."

This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.

An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

Even though a promising orebody is found, ultimate profitability may still depend on the vagaries of the marketplace, where large and unanticipated changes in supply, demand and prices can play havoc with the best of calculations.The Canadian mining industry has had its share of disappointment during the past few years, with savage competition, shrinking demand, declining prices, and disappearing profits. A umidade nos óleos protetivos temporários e na solução de encruamento, bem como alterações no pH da água desmineralizada, utilizada na lavagem do aço antes do seu oleamento, podem causar manchas na superfície dos aços revestidos com zinco. As condições de transporte e de estocagem nos clientes também podem causar manchas. Essas manchas causam forte impacto visual, podendo gerar dúvidas na aplicação dos aços. Por esse motivo, algumas medidas são utilizadas na Usiminas para evitar manchas, como os controles da umidade no tanque de armazenamento dos óleos, do pH da água desmineralizada e do tempo de estocagem entre o encruamento e o acabamento dos aços. No presente estudo, foram realizadas caracterizações de amostras produzidas e manchadas em laboratório. Foram empregadas técnicas como a microscopia de força atômica, a microscopia eletrônica de varredura com canhão de emissão por efeito de campo e o espectrômetro de emissão ótica por descarga luminescente (GDOES), sendo propostos mecanismos para a formação das manchas que estariam relacionadas com a oxidação superficial do revestimento.

Vallourec was world pioneer in the deployment, development and consolidation of technology for the use of pulverized charcoal as the main energy source on the first Grate-kiln pelletizing plant in Brazil. The objective of this work was to delve into the subject and to bring more information about this innovative practice of Vallourec that has been attracting the attention of other companies in the steel industry. Industrial tests confirmed the technical feasibility, taking Vallourec ahead in the project of adaptation and investment. With consolidated data of two years and five months from the beginning of the implementation, the main benefits are the average reduction of CO₂e emissions by 50%, cost reduction higher than expected and return on investment in just 19 months.

Devido a sua alta demanda de produção e padrão de qualidade a indústria automotiva tem utilizado ao longo da história robôs nas mais diversas atividades como montagem, soldagem, pintura e inspeção. No intuito de levar esta realidade para a sala de aula de alunos de Engenharia Mecânica, foi desenvolvido um braço robótico didático, apresentando configuração semelhante à um modelo industrial, a ser utilizado como ferramenta de apoio ao ensino de robótica e outras disciplinas correlacionadas. Para isto, fez-se o uso associado da placa eletrônica Arduino e do software Matlab. Inicialmente foram obtidas as equações de cinemática direta e inversa. Os resultados mostraram que a posição teórica obtida apresentou um comportamento esperado conforme a metodologia adotada e o resultado experimental mostrou pequena variação de posição. Para a cinemática inversa, o tempo de resolução do conjunto de equações foi comparado à resolução do problema através de um método numérico. Com base nos resultados experimentais, foram feitas algumas sugestões de melhoria para o braço robótico didático e considerações relacionadas a acurácia de um robô industrial.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um compósito permeável formado por uma matriz de polipropileno reforçada com resíduos de construção e demolição (RCD). Inicialmente foi feita a limpeza, peneiramento e caracterização do RCD. O compósito foi conformado na forma de placas pelo processo de compressão a quente. O RCD foi misturado com os grânulos do polímero e a mistura disposta em um molde que foi fechado e comprimido com carga de 1 ton e mantido na temperatura de 210oC por 10 min. Foram conformadas placas permeáveis e impermeáveis variando-se o percentual dos constituintes e granulometria do RCD. Para a caracterização foram realizados ensaios de permeabilidade e flexão em três pontos. As placas permeáveis apresentaram elevado grau de permeabilidade, muito superior aos requisitos mínimos para concreto. Foi constatado que a distribuição granulométrica tem influência na resistência mecânica e permeabilidade do compósito. O aumento do teor de granulados finos promoveu aumento nas propriedades mecânicas em flexão sem perda da permeabilidade. Com a impermeabilização das placas e consequente redução de vazios as propriedades mecânicas em flexão praticamente triplicaram. Analisando os resultados de uma forma geral pode-se concluir que há margem para melhorar o desempenho mecânico do compósito sem perda da permeabilidade.

"Friction fatigue is the loss of soil-pile friction around the shaft area of the pile. It has been observed during impact driving of piles, and has been modelled to a limited degree using physical scale models. This paper proposes the use of high strain dynamic pile testing to assess and quantify friction fatigue in impact driven piles. The method is applied to two case studies: one on a project off the north-west coast of Australia and one on a South Pacific Island. On both sites calcareous sand layers are present. Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) monitoring has been conducted during impact driving of steel piles, which allowed for assessment of shaft resistance development both with depth and with progressive driving, by use of wave equation signal matching. Lessons are drawn from the case studies to improve future observations.INTRODUCTIONFriction fatigue is the loss of soil-pile friction around the shaft area of the pile, under cyclic loading or during pile driving. The phenomenon has been frequently observed in some non-silica sands, such as pumice sands and calcareous sands and has been the subject of academic study.The occurrence of friction fatigue impacts the driving behaviour of piles and the shaft friction component of the ultimate geotechnical strength (Rd,ug). If potential friction fatigue is not recognised in the design phase of a project, required pile toe levels can be significantly underestimated. This could lead to extra cost and delays, or, if no adequate pile verification is conducted, to geotechnical failure or underperformance of piles. This is especially true in remote locations, such as Pacific islands, where calcareous material is often present.A better understanding of the phenomenon would aid both pile design and driveability assessment. This paper proposes the use of high strain dynamic pile testing to assess and quantify the effect of friction fatigue from impact driving. Two case studies are presented in which high strain dynamic testing has been conducted on driven piles in calcareous sands to illustrate the method.BACKGROUNDFriction fatigueThe geotechnical strength of piles is composed of the resistance to static loading by the base of the pile and the shear resistance between the shaft of the pile and the adjacent soil. The latter is often referred to as the shaft resistance or shaft friction.During impact pile driving, a decrease in shaft resistance is often observed. Although this phenomenon is also observed during vibratory pile installation, this paper deals predominantly with impact driving. This decrease in material strength from the tip of the pile influences the shaft resistance and may be either temporary or permanent. Temporary reduction in shaft resistance is common in cohesive soils and is thought to be caused by excess pore water pressure, which has insufficient time to dissipate. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as set up, is observed to a significantly lesser extent in non-cohesive materials such as clean sands (Rausche et al., 2004)."

The results of five centrifuge models were used to evaluate the response of pile-supported wharves subjected to inertial and liquefaction-induced lateral spreading loads. The centrifuge models contained pile groups that were embedded in rockfill dikes over layers of loose to dense sand and were shaken by a series of ground motions. The p-y curves were back-calculated for both dynamic and static loading from centrifuge data and were compared against commonly used API p-y relationships. It was found that a significant reduction in ultimate soil resistance occurred in dynamic p-y curves in partially/fully liquefied soils as compared to static p-y curves. It was also found that incorporating p-multipliers that are proportional to the pore water pressure ratio in granular materials is adequate for estimating pile demands in pseudo static analysis. 1. INTRODUCTION Liquefaction-induced ground deformations can cause severe damage to pile-supported wharves and other waterfront structures. A common approach in analyzing the lateral behavior of piles against seismic loads is using the beam on nonlinear Winkler foundation (BNWF) or p-y spring analysis. One common p-y relationship for sand is the one proposed by the American Petroleum Institute, also known as the API sand model (API 1993). While the API sand model was originally developed for the static loading conditions, it is common to modify the API sand curves for the effects of cyclic loading. However, there is no consensus on how to modify the static p-y curves for the effects of liquefaction and pore water pressure generation in loose granular soils. In previous studies, p-y springs of piles in liquefying soils were back-calculated from case histories, centrifuge model studies (e.g., Wilson et al. 2000; Brandenberg et al. 2005; Abdoun et al. 2003), full-scale tests (e.g., Rollins et al. 2005; Chang and Hutchinson 2013), and numerical analyses (e.g., McGann et al. 2011). In general, these studies found the softening effects of soil liquefaction on p-y curves, as well as a hardening behavior attributed to the dilative response of the liquefied soil around the pile. However, these studies provide varying recommendations on how to modify the static p-y curves to capture this complex behavior. Some design guidelines propose softening the static p-y curves using p-multipliers (e.g., Caltrans 2012). Other studies propose an upward concave shape for p-y curves in liquefied soils (e.g., Franke and Rollins 2013; Chang and Hutchinson 2013).

"The Rapid Load Testing (RLT) of foundation piles has been applied worldwide since 1984. Several International and national codes are available, such as the Japanese Code of Practice (2002), ASTM D7383-2010, German recommendation on Piling (2012) and Eurocode (2015). RLT methods like Statnamic and StatRapid are gaining popularity in Asia, Europe and North America. For checking the performance of piles, they are more economical, faster and environmentally friendly than Static Load Testing (SLT), while yielding good correlations with SLT results through an objective analysis method. To date (October 2016) hundreds of piles have been successfully tested by RLT method in Singapore. A number of these RLT tests were coupled with static load testing correlation tests, some of them with instrumentation for shaft load transferred. Examples of some correlation results for foundations installed in various geological formations in Singapore are presented in the paper. The findings from these results indicate that loading rate effects are negligible for Rapid Load Test results when foundations are socketed in competent non-cohesive soil layers and derive most of their capacity from these soil layers.INTRODUCTIONRapid Load Testing (RLT), by which a quasi-static load is applied to a foundation pile, is used increasingly as an alternative to Static Load Testing (SLT) for cast in-situ piles, such as drilled shafts or bored piles. It is recognized nowadays that the determination of the pile capacity with Dynamic Load Testing (DLT) through signal matching techniques such as CAPWAP, TNOWAVE and AllWave-DLT, yield a wide spread of results for cast in-situ piles (Stahlmann et. al, 2012), making it practically very difficult, if not impossible to calibrate the DLT results with SLT results. This spread is due to the empirical and subjective assumptions that are used to interpret the test data, especially for cast insitu piles (Holeyman et al. 2001, Viana da Fonseca in 2008, Herten et al, 2013). This is further complicated by the inhomogeneity of the concrete and variable cross-sections over the pile length for the cast in-situ piles."

All mineral beneficiation processes require water for its execution. Therefore, the availability and adequate management of water are key to the existence of any mine operation. However, many mines’ operations are affected by water scarcity and risk an increase of operational costs or even production in some cases. This paper proposes a model to minimize the losses of water due to evaporation and re-absorption by adjusting the active and inactive periods of the discharge in different points of the tailing. When applied, the model determines optimal or nearly optimal discharge operation in all the scenarios that were evaluated.

Visando garantir o nível de qualidade dos produtos e o controle do processamento do aço para atender aos requisitos dos clientes e das normas técnicas aplicáveis e manter-se competitivo no mercado de aços longos com redução contínua de custos, um dos grandes desafios das aciarias elétricas é promover o aumento do rendimento de suas ferro-ligas melhorando ao mesmo tempo os processos de desoxidação e dessulfuração, além da limpeza interna do banho. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da adição de carbureto de cálcio durante o vazamento das corridas do aço 1026-D nestas variáveis, através da análise estatística e termodinâmica de dados de corridas experimentais, com e sem adição de carbureto de cálcio. Foi demonstrado que a adição desse insumo melhora de forma significativa os parâmetros metalúrgicos de qualidade do material e reduz o custo de transformação para a fabricação desse produto através da redução do consumo de ferro-ligas.

Devido ao aumento da restrição do teor de enxofre nos aços torna-se necessário investigar a eficiência do processo de dessulfuração de ferro gusa. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho é empregar diferentes matérias-primas e fundentes como cal calcítica, sodalita, pré-cal, mistura padrão, fluorita, escória de KR, borra de alumínio e B2O3, a fim de encontrar a composição com maior eficiência de dessulfuração, relacionando-a ao fator de dessulfuração, obtido pela termodinâmica computacional. Os testes foram realizados a 1350°C, em uma atmosfera inerte com agitação constante. Os resultados mostraram que a mistura com maior eficiência foi aquela com 69% de cal, 5% de sodalita, 15% de pré-cal, 6% de escória KR e 5% de B2O3.

Com o objetivo de analisar o nível de aderência e a qualidade dos Indicadores Ambientais, divulgados pelas empresas dos setores: metalúrgico, siderúrgico e de mineração, que fazem parte da BM&Bovespa, foi feita uma pesquisa exploratória, qualitativa e de caráter documental, com base nos dados coletados nos Relatórios de Sustentabilidade GRI G3.1. Os Indicadores Ambientais foram analisados pelos métodos GAPIE (Grau de Aderência Plena) e GEE (Grau de Evidenciação Efetiva). Constatou-se que poucas empresas dos setores apresentam relátorios nomolde padrão internacional GRI, mesmo assim 58,33% apresentam algum tipo de evidenciação voluntária ambiental em seus web sites e 54,16% são ou já foram certificadas pelo ISSO 14001, demonstrando que a divulgação de ações de Responsabilidade Social Corporativa, ainda são tímidas nesses setores. Especificamente, os resultados obtidos através dos cálculos do GAPIE e di GEE mostram que, quando divulgados, os resultados são considerados positivos, levando-se em conta a média das empresas. Deve-se destacar que a pesquisa limita-se a análise apenas dos Indicadores Ambientais, nesse contexto os resultados dos cálculos de GEE e GAPIE não devem ser generalizados ao Relatório de Sustentabilidade como um todo.

Increases in mining and production capacities can have a major impact on the productivity of a mining and production facility during the construction and commissioning period. With minimised production loss in mind, a multi-phase modular plant design was implemented on the Khumani Mine in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The first phase involved a run-of-mine (ROM) crushing facility and the subsequent modular processing facility with capacity for 8.4 million tons per annum (Mt/a) product. An interim phase comprising modular additions to the processing facility increased capacity to 10 Mt/a product, with tie-ins occurring during maintenance periods. The second phase involves a second ROM crushing facility and modular additions to the processing facility, increasing capacity to 16 Mt/a product. This paper outlines the design considerations and limitations with modular design that need to be considered and shows how effectively construction and commissioning were implemented within shut-down and maintenance periods.
