After mope than fifty years Of Continuous operation, the Nevada Mines Division found itself faced with declining ore headings and metallurgical efficiencies, and rising operating costs. Although intensive process improvement programs had been initiated at various times in its history, insufficient return on investment served to defeat plans for any major changes in circuitry. The advent of practical large-volume flotation machinery, along with the success of long-range exploration drilling programs, complimented the results of an intensive program of research and development. The result of laboratory testing, pilot plant testing, and full scale plant tests was the proven indication of metallurgical improvement given increased flotation residence time and the effect of mechanical agitation in flotation.

It was first pointed out in 1934 by Gaudin (1) that the "oily" oxidation product of the alkyl xanthate ion-dialkyl dixanthogen, might be the "active flotation agent" on sulphide minerals and there have been a number of studies supporting this hypothesis (2,3,4). However, all of these studies have relied largely on electrochemical evidence. Galena, being a semiconductor, may be used as an electrode in aqueous solution and it was shown that ethyl xanthate ion does not adsorb with charge transfer in the absence of oxygen unless the potential of the galena surface is above -100 mv versus the hydrogen electrode (H2 E). At this potential the galena surface is slightly hydrophobic but does not become strongly hydrophobic unless the potential is raised to 210 mv (versus H2 E). It is suggested that, at potentials of 210 mv or above, ethyl xanthate ions are oxidised to diethyl dixanthogen and that chemisorption of oxygen raises the galena surface to this potential. On the other hand, examination of xanthated galena surfaces by chemical or physical methods (5,6,7) has failed to detect dixanthogen and it has been shown that dixanthogen may be reduced to lead xanthate at a lead sulphide surface. It was suggested by Leja and Poling (5) that, as dixanthogen is a neutral molecule it would not be repelled by the negatively charged galena surface so that the adsorption was envisaged as taking place through homogeneous oxidation of the xanthate ion to dixanthogen, adsorption and reduction of the dixanthogen to a chemisorbed lead xanthate species. In paper I of this series (11) it was shown that the thiosulphate ion, which forms on galena surfaces in slurries at the pH normally used for flotation, will reduce dixanthogen. There is, therefore, the impasse that the electrochemical evidence requires that xanthate ion be oxidised to dixanthogen at the galena surface while the chemical evidence shows that the reverse reaction takes place.

Due to the present economic climate, particularly the depressed copper market, conventional mining, milling and flotation operations have been suspended. However, due to the apparent amenability of the ore to 'natural' leaching, investigations have been initiated into establishing an in-situ leaching operation as a preferred alternative to conventional operations. Cement copper production has been developed in parallel with the leaching trials and is presently at the rate of approximately 3,000 tonnes of contained copper per annum. Testwork includes controlled leaching of ore both in the laboratory and in-situ following blasting.

Although most New Zealand coals are low in ash, there are situations where high ash coals could be won. Not all high ash coals can be upgraded by physical means, since the ash is either inherent in the coal or bound in such a way to make its physical removal either impractical or uneconomic. Nevertheless, the authors believe, the situations where high amounts of ash can be economically removed by physical means to make a saleable product are considerable.

It is probably safe to assume that most operating personnel working in coal preparation plants are exposed to noise levels in excess of the MESA Noise Regulations unless they are wearing ear protection. The excessive in-plant noise levels have received little attention until recently. Noise control has not been an important design consideration in existing coal preparation plants. This situation is rapidly changing as plant owners and plant operators are requiring that new coal preparation plants be designed to provide a safe noise environment for operating personnel and also meet MESA Noise Regulations. This paper discusses the noise exposure hazards, noise generating mechanisms, and some possible noise control solutions for typical coal preparation plants.

In this first report, we present a preliminary model based on the simple binary sys¬tem of component B occluded in a matrix of compo¬nent A, for the case where fracture planes can pass with equal ease through A or B. By assuming that the volume fraction of B in AB in the overall matrix is small, which is realistic for many prac¬tical systems, the problem is reduced to a one-¬dimensional treatment which is conceptually easy to understand. The model was programmed for Monte Carlo simulation, and an analytical solution also developed based on the assumption of zero or one mineral fragment per particle. Preliminary ex¬perimental confirmation using a synthetic "mineral¬-host matrix" of known amount and size of B in AB is presented.

It is quite common for people exposed to blast vibrations to ask questions such as "How big was that blast on the Richter Scale?" Although it is tempting to dismiss such questions out of hand, for the lay person it is understandable that something which shakes their house should have some sort of measure attached to it. Since a layman doesn't usually know about particle velocity, frequency or the other terms used in describing and regulating blast vibration, the Richter Scale is usually the only measure they can relate to.

In general, the direction of the maximum horizontal stress in the eastern United States is fairly well defined. However, the variation of the magnitudes of the horizontal stresses is not very well understood. Because the horizontal stresses cause severe ground control problems in underground coal and limestone mines throughout the eastern United States a more complete understanding of how the magnitudes vary would be useful for developing mine design strategies to combat horizontal stress related ground control problems. Therefore, in this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study, the variation of the magnitude of the horizon stresses in sedimentary deposits in the eastern and Midwestern United States are examined with respect to two factors, the elastic modulus of the rock and the site depth. Stress measurements from thirty-seven sites are used in the evaluation. Examining the applied excess strains indicates that the eastern United States can be, separated into high and low strain zones. For most of the eastern United States the maximum applied excess or tectonic strain ranges from only 300 to 550 micro strains. However, there is one area, a portion of the Beckley seam in the central Appalachian region where the strains are significantly higher than the other regions. In this higher strain zone, the maximum applied tectonic strains range from 700 to 1,000 micro strains. Regression models for each zone based on the elastic modulus can explain between 83 to 85% of the variation of the maximum horizontal stress. Because one region, the northern Appalachian district, has strains that are about 20% higher than the other regions in the low strain zone, multiple strain models based on geographic regions were developed for the low strain zone that can explain 87 to 91% of the maximum horizontal stress variation with the elastic modulus. Depth was found not to be a significant causal factor in any increase in the horizontal stress even though the site depths ranged from 275 to 2,500 ft. Beyond a theoretical increase, based on Poisson’s effect and gravity, no other increase in the horizontal stress with depth can be justified with this data. The most significant factor controlling the variation of the maximum horizontal stress is the elastic modulus of the rock, not the overburden depth.

The increasing interest in the subject of electrical separation warrants the addition to what has already been written of a few lines covering the practical workings of the Tilly Foster mill under the direction of Mr. E. S. Moffat, General Manager. Since my last paper was presented to the Institute, Mr. S. P. Tomkins, the superintendent, has had thrust upon him for solution several problems complicated by the introduction of new conditions. 1. The richer portion of the lean ore dump, and that nearest the railroad track, having been worked up in 1890, the handling of the balance, including a largely increased amount of rock, could only be accomplished at an increased cost. 2. The tailings had accumulated close about the mill to such an extent that arrangements had to be perfected to move them further away.

The philosophy used in designing and writing Duval's Sierrita mine design programs is discussed. The Sierrita Incremental Design system (SID) is reviewed with emphasis on Pushback Extraction Design (PED). FED is a method by which predesigned pushbacks are sequenced into an optimized period-by-period design that can be directly utilized in daily operations as well as intermediate and long range planning. The advantage of SID is that it provides a practical, mineable open pit design. PED is not a theoretical design system; it is in operational use.

In recent years there have been significant advances in computing power and programming technology, enabling more complicated processes to be modelled in greater detail. This has led to increased understanding of these complex processes, including mineral processing circuits. JKSimMet was developed over the past 35 years, incorporating outcomes from various research projects conducted at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), part of the Sustainable Minerals Institute at The University of Queensland. It is a steady-state software program that allows the user to mass balance, model fit and simulate crushing, grinding and classification circuits. JKSimFloat has been developed over the past 20 years, incorporating outcomes from the JKMRC and other institutions around the world through the AMIRA International P9 project ? The Optimisation and Simulation of Mineral Processing Circuits. It is also a steady-state software program, similar to JKSimMet, but is focused on analysing flotation circuits. Both programs have been used in a wide variety of optimisation and design projects over many years. This paper provides an overview of both JKSimMet and JKSimFloat and examples of how both programs have been used to better understand, develop and optimise mineral processing circuits around the world.

With ever-increasing demand, low-grade complex ores and strict environmental regulations, metallurgical processing options have become limited. Heap leach technology provides several benefits to combat these issues including low cost, flexibility and diversified process conditions. This paper provides an overview of heap leaching technology with specific emphasis on chemical aspects. Hence, influencing factors, advantages and disadvantages, testing approaches and some fundamentals will be discussed. Finally, heap leach technology for different ore types (copper, nickel, uranium and gold) will be briefly compared.

Longwall extraction in the Phalen Scam in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia is carried out under flooded abandoned workings in the Harbour Seam 140 m above, and at depth of up to 700 m beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Careful planning of panel and pillar dimensions is necessary to prevent inflows from the overlying workings and to prevent the development of excessive subsidence strains at the seabed. This paper briefly summarises the research undertaken over the past five years by CBDC and CBCRL into the problems associated with mining under water, and then describes the development and application of a design/planning code of practice developed jointly by CBDC, CBCRL and mine regulatory agencies. The design method employed in the Code of Practise is based on empirical data from the coalfield and parameters developed from subsidence modelling and previous water inflow experience. It includes precautionary measures to be adopted during development and mining, and monitoring procedures to be followed. It is flexible enough to allow future developments in the understanding of inflow mechanisms to be incoporated without major modifications, and represents a major step forward in reducing the potential hazards associated with coal extraction in the coalfield.

The first full year of the second World War for the United States presented a picture of the metal-and nonmetal-mining 4 industry which, without proper analysis and explanation, would convey a distorted view of achievements during 1942, especially because employment at gold and silver (lode and placer) mines-the largest group-declined to such an extent that the over-all totals for the country were reduced even though increases were made at mines producing copper, lead-zinc, iron, miscellaneous metals, and non-metals. A complete panorama of the metal-and nonmetal-mining industry, exclusive of coal mining, reveals a decrease in the number of men employed, the man-hours of employment, and the accident-frequency rates. Were the gold and silver (lode and placer) mines to be considered as a separate category; it would be seen that the number of men employed at all the other groups of mines increased appreciably over 1941. These other increases must be considered important, since these mines produced the vital war minerals that made valuable contributions to the military successes of the United States and its Allies during the year. A separate analysis of each of the various groups of mines may be found elsewhere in this bulletin. For the purpose of maintaining continuity in this series of bulletins, however, the discussion in this introduction will be confined to the entire metal-and nonmetal-mining industry (excluding coal mining, for which a separate bulletin, No. 462, has been published).

SYNOPSIS Certain disadvantages associated with the use of Anfex have been raised on previous occasions. This interim investigation shows that by loading at lower pressures the sensitivity to initiation of Anfex can be improved. Associated with this is a reduction in velocity of detonation and charge density which should lead to more desirable fragmentation. The effect of lower loading pressure on other factors is also considered. INTRODUCTION Discussion at the Symposium on the use of Anfex in Underground Mining, conducted by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy during May 1968 showed that there was considerable uncertainty and diversity of opinion on the characteristics of Anfex and its method of application. Some of the disadvantages associated with the use of Anfex were: Inadequate sensitivity to initiation; Excessive fragmentation of the rock and damage to the hanging and footwalls; Wastage as a result of blow-back; Poor water resistance. As a result of this, further investigations on the properties of Anfex have been carried out and, although these have not reached finality, it is considered that a progress review may be of interest and assistance to the mining industry. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The work was carried out on a laboratory-scale where, for test purposes, the explosive was loaded into 1 in. (nominal) internal diameter steel pipes unless otherwise stated. Charging was conducted with a 1 in. (nominal) Schutte-Koerting eductor having a 0.2 in. internal diameter venturi nozzle, the Anfex being fed into the eductor from a conical hopper fitted directly above it. A 5 ft long copper loading tube with outside and internal diameters of 3/4 in. and 5/8 in., respectively, was fitted to the discharge end of the eductor. The remote end of the loading tube was inserted into the test pipe so that it was about 6 to 8 in. from the closed end of the pipe. The loading apparatus was withdrawn as the pipe filled, maintaining approximately the same stand-off distance throughout the operation. REVIEW Sensitivity to initiation Sensitivity of Anfex to initiation was found to deteriorate when the dynamic pressure of the air to the eductor was increased. Total extraction mining of coal is being undertaken on a small scale by Anglo Coal South Africa. Longwall mining has been done in the group at New Denmark colliery since the 80s and recently the company started experimenting with pillar mining at Goedehoop colliery. Total extraction mining methods result in caving of the overburden strata that is often accompanied by displacement of air causing wind blasts. The windblasts can cause injuries to underground mining personnel, damage to mining equipment, and ventilation disruptions. Some incidents of windblast damage and injuries have been recorded at both New Denmark and Goedehoop Colliery that prompted mine management to experiment with the goaf warning device, an instrument developed by CSIR mining technology to give early warning of impending god. The initial version of the Goafwarn was originally developed to operate as a stand-alone unit, with LED lights mounted on the device that would flash if the unit was triggered'. That set up would be effective in small working areas where the flashing lights are visible to all workers. This requirement is more difficult to satisfy in longwall application of the unit where mining activities are spread over large linear distances of up to 250 m and the flashing lights would not be visible to all workers in the longwall face. It was also found that the single unit had limitations in distinguishing between man made vibrations and cracking in rockmass leading to an unacceptably high incidence of false alarms. The case studies describe the experiments that were carried out to ameliorate the two issues mentioned above through networking more than one unit. This was achieved through the development of radio communication from the warning devices to a central control (Trollex Data Acquisition Unit) from which the alarms are issued once the prescribed triggers are satisfied. The operating system was made up of 4 Goafwarn units installed 30 m apart with 2 in the tailgate and other 2 in the main gate. The alarm state was defined where 3 or more units were triggered simultaneously. The concept was applied successfully in real time during longwall mining, and management procedures have been developed to achieve safety through the system including switching off the shearer, and flicking the lights to warn people.

Outokumpu introduced Flash Flotation in the early l 980's for the recovery of floatable material from grinding circuits. The devel­opment came as a result of surveys made in the company's own concentrators, initiated to find ways of improving recoveries with increasingly complex and lower grade feeds. Hydrocyclones make a separation on the basis of particle size and mass, resulting in the "over collection" of fine grained, high S.G. particles. Minerals such as pentlandite, galena and gold are easily caught in the circulating load around the mill until they are overground and rendered more difficult to collect. In the case of downstream flotation this may simply involve a reduction in the rate coefficient due to the finer sizes or, as is commonly experienced in gold operations, the mate­rial is slimed and coated onto non-floating gangue and is eventual­ly lost to tails. At the time of Outokumpu's plant surveys, it was a relatively common practice, particularly in Pb operations, to have a flotation section fed directly from the secondaiy mill discharge. This is called unit flotation and certainly provided an improvement but very high wear rates and frequent sanding out of the cells was com­mon. The development of the SkimAir® Flash Flotation cell by Outokumpu provided a subtle but quite dramatic departure from the unit cell approach. Now it was possible to feed cyclone under­flow into a special purpose-built flotation machine and recover a final grade concentrate from the grinding circuit (see Figure I). The cell was designed to handle the coarse circulating load, per­mitting the coarsest fractions to be short-circuited back to the mill and retain the floatable sizes for a nominal time of 30 seconds to several minutes. The short retention time was possible largely due to the relatively clean content of the cyclone underflow stream. This means that the fine gangue is not present except in small quan­tities and most of the fine to mid-size paiiicles are higher S.G. and more likely represent valuable mineral. This condition provides for very high rate coefficients. Typical operations would recover 40-60% of the valuable mineral in this fashion and improvements in recovery were typically from 2-5% for sulphide minerals to the 5-20% range for gold and silver.
