"THE LETHBRIDGE COAL FIELD lies mainly .to the north and west of the city of Lethbridge. Mining carried on in this area for over eighty years until 1965. Before the building of a railway the coal was carried by bullock wagon to Montana for use in smelting, and for a while by river boat to Medicine Hat for railway use. The single, almost flat, worked seam is designated the ""Galt"" seam and is about 1.5 metres thick. It belongs to the Belly River formation and is under cover of 80 to 180 metres of weakly stratified sediments. A complex system of cross faults adds to the mining difficulties. Close timbering required in the entries and rooms reflected in a high timber cost and lower output per man shift. The coal is High Volatile"" C"" bituminous in rank with maximum gross calorific value of 11,200 Btu per pound and with a well defined cleavage. Roof conditions in the field range from very tender and very heavy on the south end of the field and west of the Oldman River to a more stable character to the north. Relatively speaking, the whole field would earn a rather tender rating and definitely so in relation to many U.S. fields. Floor conditions are characterized by a bentonitic type heaving in the south end of the field west of the Oldman river to a more stable situation in the north, which can tolerate shuttle car operation if kept drained. Water problems are minimal, except paralleling the Oldman River, where the seam dips below the river level. While vigilance is necessary to prevent accumulations of gas, the volume is rather limited. The seam was entered by shafts, except where small mines were located along the Oldman river banks and gained access by drifts. The coal seam was developed by driving either 3 or 4 Face entries 2 1/2 metres (8 ft) wide on 18-metre ( 60-ft) centres. Sets of dual butt entries driven at right angles to the Face entries completed development work. Normally rooms up to 8 metres wide were turned off the butt entries on up to 11 - metre centres. These were worked in groups of three to five, depending on the roof conditions, and normally advanced 60 m (200 ft). In some areas rooms had to be abandoned short of their objectives due to roof pressure, heaving floor and intermittent work."

The Barra Mine was the most significant mine of Australia's earliest mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851, the decade prior to discovery of gold in eastern Australia. Between 1845 and 1860, Barra was the largest metalliferous mine in Australia and employed up to 1000 men and boys, most of them Cornish.""Today the site is also important in a physical and archaeological sense as it contains extensive remains of mining and processing operations of the period 1850 - 70. Most significant are three cnginchouses which housed Cornish beam engines.

WHEN the Board of Directors of the Institute in June 1931 approved the formation of the Committee on Eastern Magnetite and its then membership of eleven, little did any of those concerned envision that twelve years later the annual Committee luncheon would attract 34, and the technical session, jointly with the Iron and Steel Division, more than 70. Yet that was exactly what happened during the February meeting just passed. And what is more important, some members of the Committee are now predicting that by 1944 over 10 per cent of the iron ore produced in the United States will come from these Eastern Magnetite properties. Chairman Crockett, in opening the meeting, advised that due to the serious illness of Meredith E. Johnson, State Geologist of New Jersey, Mr. Johnson would be unable to brief his scheduled paper, which would therefore be reserved for a later date.

The recovery of fine coal has historically had limited success due to the intimate clay association on the surfaces of the coal particles. This clay presence has detrimentally affected conventional beneficiation techniques resulting in a recovered product containing unacceptably high concentrations of ash and moisture. An ultrasonically activated tray that operates in a continuous fashion has been developed that separates the clay film from each particle's surfaces. This separation is of sufficient duration to allow conventional beneficiation techniques to be utilized more efficiently.

This paper will discuss the benefits and advantages of using 3D survey data in stope analysis. Obtaining detailed 3D survey data of underground mine progress and production is a challenge. It is almost impossible to ?see? around corners, underneath overhangs, or deep into dark, dusty, humid underground voids. Thus, valuable ore can remain permanently encased in backfill. Without the benefit of 3D survey data, underground mines have the difficult task of meeting grade quotas without the benefit of knowing exactly what has been mined. Lack of this data usually results in unfavorable month end Reconciliation factors, where grades must be adjusted to match grades assessed by the Mill.

The paper will cover the basic reasons for alkaline leaching, a brief description of the circuit and the reasons for the flowsheet used. Changes made to the flowsheet, including the use of mechanical agitation of pachuca slurry, the use of oxygen and its effect on extraction, the use of lime and its effect on process economy, and the environment, will be described. A brief description of a unique semi-autogenous mill and future circuit changes will be included.

The exact reasons that explain the low recoveries of coarse particles in conventional flotation machines are not clear. Being a concern for only a couple of mineral industries comparatively very few studies have been devoted to the problem of coarse particle flotation. Coarse particles flotation is particularly important in potash and phosphate beneficiation. Potash concentrates with particles larger than 1-2 mm do not require additional compaction or recrystallization and receive a premium price. However, recovery of this size particle in conventional flotation cells is very low, and therefore, the coarse floation tailings have to be reground and refloated to produce, at a higher cost, a less desirable concentrate. In phosphate beneficiation deslimed coarse ore (nominally l4x35 or l6x35 mesh) is normally treated separatedly from the finer (35x150 mesh) ore. Concentration by conventional froth flotation alone yields very low recoveries, and therefore, additional processes such as agglomerate flotation in tables spirals and belt conveyors have to be used ( Moudgil and Barnett 1979). Fatty acids and fuel oil used in phosphate flotation have a moderate level of selectivity but considerable amounts of sand report to the froth product, thus concentrates have to be further upgraded by a double flotation process. Concentrates from the anionic circuit are scrubbed in an acidic media to desorb the collectors and then refloated in a cationic circuit to eliminate the fine silica (Lawver et.al. 1978). In this paper the reasons that explain the low recovery of coarse particles in conventional flotation are discussed. A flotation column modified according to the main conclusions of this discussion is tested with two coarse phosphate samples.

Environmental considerations are extremely important in planning and carrying out mergers, acquisitions and real estate transfers. It is not inconceivable that potential or actual environmental liabilities could exceed the targeted company's net worth or the book value of the real estate of interest. It is therefore essential that an environmental due diligence investigation (DDI) be performed to quantify environmental liabilities before sales, mergers or acquisitions. This paper will discuss general procedures used in environmental due diligence investigations. The emphasis will be placed on mergers and acquisitions. It should be pointed out that the procedures discussed in this paper are general and must be modified to fit each particular merger or acquisition under consideration.

In any filtration, it is primarily the filter medium (cloth) and cake filtering properties that control the type of filtration equipment used and filtration conditions. The advent of new types of filter cloths, such as the membrane cloth discussed in this paper, can result in significant changes in filtration techniques and areas of application for filtration. For many suspensions, for instance, conventional filtration is uneconomic compared to gravity separation or not filtering at all (as with product recovery from dilute streams) because the solids are very fine, are hard to retain and build up filter pressure rapidly, and once retained are hard to remove. As a result of the developments discussed here, this is no longer the case. This technique and the use of the membrane filter cloth is well established. This filtration is currently being used for white liquor filtration in twenty-four mills worldwide in the chemical recovery step of the kraft process for producing paper pulp where it is replacing gravity thickeners in new plants. Filters up to 1000 sq. ft. (100 sq. meters) are filtering large volumes of solids from hot caustic solutions. The filtration materials and techniques discussed in this paper open the way to new methods and applications for filtration in the mining industry. It is not the intention of this paper to give a vigorous analysis of the different separations, but to outline some of the ways in which this filtration technique might be used in the mining industry.

Silver-lead ores are widely distributed through- out the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges, but none of the deposits is large. Historically the Glen Osmond Mines are the most significant as the site of the first metalliferous mining in Australia, but Talisker was one of the three largest producers of silver-lead in a state whose mining history is dom- inated by copper. The mine is located in a magnificent natural setting on Talisker Conservation Park, near Cape Jervis, southwest of Adelaide (Figure 1). It is exempt from the operations of the Mining Act and listed on the Register of State Heritage Items. The mine and associated township of Silverton were dominated by Cornish influences during the period of principal activity between 1862 and 1872. Silverton, located on a ridge overlooking the mine, grew to a population of about 300 at its peak in 1870 and the area was very much another 'little Cornwall'.

Fifty per cent. increased lump coal production and at the same time a reduction of from 20 to 40 per cent. in explosive consumption. These results were achieved by the use of the rock-dust cartridge method of stemming shots in the Ruhr coal mines, as announced by Dr. Alfred Stettbacher in the September 1923 number of the Explosive Engineer. Immediately, the explosive and the coal-mining industries on this continent became intensely interested. Considerable experimental work has been carried on in a number of American and Canadian mines during the past year, by which our engineers have become assured that the use of rock-dust cart-ridges for stemming shots increases the efficiency of explosives and promotes safety in coal mines.

"The 19th century was an ""age of gold"" and Nova Scotia experienced its share of early gold rushes. Gold mining activity in the province was focussed into three ""rushes"" which occurred, approximately, in the 1860s, 1890s and 1930s; a total recovery of 1.1 million oz. Au has been recorded. The purpose of this note is simply to chronicle the technical development of gold mining and processing in the province and to comment briefly on the recently renewed interest in this precious metal. The first public discovery of gold in Nova Scotia was made by a farmer in 1860 at Old Tangier or Mooseland, and this find sparked the province's first gold rush. The mining and milling methods of the 1860s were ingenious. Initially, arrastras, crude stone-hewn grinding mills, drawn by men, mules or horses, were widely used. Nova Scotia's first conventional stamp mill was installed at Mooseland by 1862; it was comprised of four wooden stamps and is believed to have been imported from Scotland. One of the largest waterwheels of the 1860s, reportedly 16 feet in diameter and 8 feet wide with a SO-horsepower rating, was used in the Renfrew Gold District to drive gold stamps. Steam power was also employed, and many of the engines were of native construction, as was the unit at Waverley's Lake Major Company, which had a piston 1 foot in diameter by 12 feet long and was connected to a 16-ftdiameter flywheel."

INTRODUCTION For any identified mineral resource to qualify as a minable reserve, it must contain legally and economically extractable mineral at the time of determination. As competition for land has increased, the legal complexities have more than kept pace, frequently becoming the most important determinant in mineral exploration and development projects. Rarely will developers of a project avoid having to obtain numerous federal, state, and/or local permits while acquiring the necessary legal permission to begin mining. Each site must be selected carefully, not only for economic feasibility, but also for legal feasibility. Although it is impossible to present site-specific solutions for all potential underground developments, certain generalizations may be applied to specific land categories, particularly federally owned land. Such federally owned land includes more than 33% of the land area of the United States and many of the areas potentially attractive for future development. State and local restrictions affect a large portion of the nonfederal land, and those restrictions are equally important even though their diversity and current status require more regional study than can be provided herein (the list of references include sources of additional information). Each potential mining site requires a title search of the land status to determine the land ownership and the conditions affecting development. In addition, appropriate data concerning the mineralogic and economic potentials of an area must be collected. As listed in Table 1, many sources of public information are avail- able to aid potential developers. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical federal master title plat. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The settlement of the United States reflects a fascinating history of public-land laws and subsequent mineral-disposal laws. Most of the statutes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries sought to dispose of land for the purpose of generating revenue to the federal government. The underlying need for general revenue contributed directly to numerous and often conflicting land policies. More recently, diverse federal programs such as environmental legislation have transcended the need for revenue in forming the framework that determines who has power over mineral developments and where those developments can take place. In 1812, the General Land Office was established under the Treasury Dept. At that time, English common law prevailed, entitling the owner of the surface to whatever was contained within the surface boundaries from the surface to the center of the earth. Unless a distinct title separated the mineral estate, it was included in the surface-land ownership. However, gold and silver were the property of the crown and were controlled by sovereign prerogative. Early state legislation on the subject of mines and minerals may be classified as legislation providing for the sale of state lands with a reservation of the minerals and legislation recognizing or asserting the sovereign prerogative for precious metals. In 1781, a Pennsylvania statute reserved 20% of all gold and silver ore for the use of the commonwealth. Thomas Jefferson suggested that a portion of all gold and silver be retained by the federal government. These early rules affecting land in the eastern states, now privately held, have been re- pealed, declared obsolete, or largely ignored. Federal legislation prior to 1848 and affecting mining may be classified as legislation reserving the minerals to the United States and legislation authorizing the disposition of reserved minerals by sale, lease, or grant. With many modifications, these basic policies remain in effect at the present time. A 1796 act provided for the sale of the Northwest Territory and for the establishment of the present system of rectangular survey for public lands. The Lake Superior copper region was the scene of "wild and baseless excitement in 1837" when the attorney general concluded that the president had the power to lease lands in Wisconsin; this opinion soon was overturned by another attorney general. By 1846, Congress had passed legislation authorizing the president to sell reserved lead mines "as soon as practicable" since the system of granting Leases had proved to be unprofitable to both the government and the lessees, many of whom refused to pay the rent. The general practice of early federal Legislation was to make a distinction between mineral lands and other lands, deal with them separately, and generally withhold mineral lands from disposal except through special legislation dealing with particular land. In 1848, following the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a vast land area was ceded to the United States by Mexico. This area included the present states of California, Nevada, and Utah, as well as portions of Arizona. Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. This abolished the Mexican laws and customs relating to mining and preceded the adoption of the miners' own rules and customs. The adoption of those rules and customs followed a hard-fought battle between western congressmen and the eastern establishment. The western congressmen advocated adopting local customs through a location patent system, while the eastern establishment, particularly in Ohio and Indiana, favored an all- leasing system to pay off Civil War debts. The first mining law was passed in 1869 as an amendment to an act granting right-of-way to ditch land owners, and it was followed by the 1872 Mining Law. Precedent was established for the first categories of protected lands in the opening words of this act, which included the phrase "all unreserved" lands. Reserved lands subsequently defined included military and Indian reservations and were excluded from location since they were determined to be reserved lands. THE man who forgot to mail the letters his wife gave him was for once justified at Tulsa, for envelopes, scratch paper and tablecloths were all in demand and through the two days of the meeting of the Petroleum Division, pencils were busy everywhere sketching out diagrams, drawing curves, figuring, or just taking notes. Those attending took the serious papers seriously, and discussion was wide-ranging but pointed. Despite the highly technical character of the papers presented, the chairmen had never to call for discussion; it was only necessary to say the paper was open for it. Both days the meetings lasted until after five in the afternoon, and it was enthusiastically voted to advance the meeting hour on Friday, in order to give more time. In all, ten papers, abstracts of which appeared in MINING AND METALLURGY for October, and copies of all but two of which were available in print, were presented in the two days, and no more could have been handled to advantage in that time. All but one of these dealt with problems of production engineering. That, the opening paper, was a general review of demand, supply and price in 1928, by Campbell Osborn, in which he argued for the price control of production and showed how the economic conditions determined development. J. Elmer Thomas presented a carefully prepared review of the same data, but came to somewhat different conclusions as to trend, and J. E. Pogue pointed out that in recent years it has been the manufacturing rather than the producing industries that have been notably profitable. These and other discussions were too long to be reported here, but will be printed in full later.

THE solid nonmetallic inclusions present to some extent in all commercial steels have been variously designated. In early references they were usually called slag inclusions, and this terminology is still retained to some extent. On the premise that all nonmetallic matter produced in a metallurgical process is slag, this can be justified. We have come to think of slag, however, in a more restricted sense, and calling these particles slag inclusions is further objectionable because it fosters the erroneous concept that they are actually incorporated portions of furnace slag. Rarely is this true. The term sonims (coined from solid nonmetallic impurities) was proposed many years ago but never came into common use. In general, the term non-metallic inclusions seems to be satisfactory and adequate. NATURE AND CONS1lTUTION OF NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS From the standpoint of origin, inclusions fall naturally into two classes: (1) those occurring as a result of reactions taking place in the body of molten or solidifying metal and (2) those resulting from mechanical incorporation of refractories or other materials with which molten steel comes in contact. The former are by far the more numerous and have been called indigenous, natural, or native inclusions. The latter are by their very nature sporadic in occurrence and have been called exogenous, accidental, adventitious, or foreign inclusions. They are often referred to as the "slag-stringer" type, though here also the material is not likely to be furnace slag. Substances Found in Inclusions. Nonmetallic inclusions are composed principally of oxides and sulfides but carbides and nitrides sometimes play an important role. In the case of indigenous inclusions the reactions by which these particles are precipitated from molten or solidifying steel may be caused by: (1) oxidation such as may occur during refining or during tapping and teeming, (2) deoxidation by added alloys, (3) change
