On the occasion of this symposium in my name, I reflect upon the contributions of my academic mentors and early associates who helped shape my professional career. I was fortunate to have these people around me during my graduate work and at the start of my professional career. This paper discusses development, test data, field trials, performance, application and possible economics of high-energy blasting agents fueled with Nitropropane that can be bulk loaded into downholes or packed into waterproof packages at densities between 1.10 and 1.25 gm/cc and that yield calculated detonation pressures of 50 kilobars in small diameters to 100 kilobars in diameters over six inches. Using high-density nitrate, downhole densities of over 1.4 have been attained in field trials with correspondingly high calculated detonation pressures.

Energy issues will have increasing impacts on decision making in all facets of society over the next few decades. Industrial users of energy and producers of products that affect energy use must be fully aware of the implications of their processes and products on the energy situation. This paper describes a model that has been developed for the aluminum industry that allows scenarios to be evaluated to gain improved understanding of possible implications for our businesses. A brief overview of the model is provided.

It is difficult to evaluate exploration properties in a manner that is transparent, repeatable and easily re-calculated to cater for different geological interpretations, but the risk-based assessment methodology, the Geological Risk Method, developed and described by Lord et al (2001) attempts to satisfy all these criteria. This paper examines a case study example based on valuations of exploration projects conducted by SRK Consulting using this methodology, and describes some of the advantages and limitations of the method.

Dust scrubbers on continuous miners are steadily gaining in popularity. Recent US Bureau of Mines research on scrubbers is reviewed, with emphasis on development of a new type of water-powered scrubber that can he retrofitted to existing miners; comparison of scrubber effectiveness with blowing and exhaust line ventilation; and improving the quartz dust collection of flooded-bed panels.

Recent increase in the development of underground space in urban areas in Australia has included soft ground tunnel construction. The ground movements associated with soft ground tunnel construction may present risk to other existing and proposed structures in the nearby vicinity. Much experience has been gained both in the UK and Asia in recent years in the engineering evaluation of this risk. The paper presents a procedure to assess these aspects of soft ground tunnel construction with reference to recent projects.
