In 2004, LKAB decided to start a basic engineering study in expanding its existing production lines at the Malmberget mine site. It was expected that some of the production lines would become bottlenecks with reference to capacity. In this study, the sorting plant is examined and the results show that several unit operations will be limiting under current operating conditions. An additional purpose with the study was to investigate how replacement of some machines would influence performance and if production plans for the coming years might be achieved. Steady-state simulations using the software Modsim? were extensively used to study process performance for different operating conditions, such as iron content and size distribution in run-of-mine ore. Model parameters were derived from pilot plant data and when possible from ex-isting circuits. A complication for the simulations was the lack of relevant data and therefore some of the initial results were only indicative. The result shows that installation of new screens would give a much better operation, but also new crushers would be an improvement. This, since they can be run with full crusher chamber and tighter CSS. During 2007, most of the proposed remedies were implemented and the result is that the bottle-necks are gone, and the grades and material balances are even better than what was envisioned from the simulations.

Wheat straw was chemically modified by alkaline treatment followed by succinylation and sodium carbonate treatment for the use of cadmium and nickel adsorbent. The adsorption efficiency was calculated in different conditions. The experimental parameters were solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial metal concentrations. The biosorbent was analysed by FTIR (Fourier- Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) to investigate the changes of surface functional group. The maximum adsorption percentages of cadmium (>99%) and nickel (>98%) were achieved using 5 g/L adsorbent with 50 mg/L initial metal concentrations. The adsorption kinetic study showed that the reaction was pseudo-second order kinetics and the adsorption isotherm was well fit by the Langmuir adsorption model. The dynamic column study indicates that modified adsorbent has a better adsorption capacity towards cadmium than nickel.

This paper discusses a new method to increase flotation recovery. As known from literature, fine and coarse particles have different flotation rate constants, hydrodynamic behaviour and require different reagent regimes. The device discussed allows separate processing of finer and coarser slurry by extraction of a third stream, carrying finer slurry, from the flotation cell. By separate treatment of fine and coarse slurry operational conditions and so flotation recovery for both may be optimized more efficiently. Extraction and classification of the third stream is accomplished by low speed centrifugation and Taylor-Couette flow separation. This Dual Outlet Device (DOD) can be installed in a traditional flotation cell without need for equipment replacement. In order to asses different design options for the DOD a transparent laboratory scale model was built. For this scale model Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using the RANS k-e and LES turbulence models were performed. Essential insight in the dominant flow systems relevant to optimal operation of the DOD was obtained from the CFD simulations and flow visualization tests with the laboratory scale model. Based on these findings a number of configurations were investigated at pilot plant scale in a 5 m3 Outokumpu flotation cell. The results of the pilot plant study show that utilization of the DOD provides a method for in-cell control over particle size distribution in the slurry. Use of the DOD in a flotation cell may enhance flotation recovery and decrease flotation reagent consumption significantly, against marginal investment and operation costs.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the leaching of phosphate values from Florida phosphatic clay wastes using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the leaching agent and methanol as the solvent. Acid-alcohol leaching studies were done using pure crystalline apatite to investigate potential causes for low extractions. It was found that a barrier layer formed on the surface of the apatite. Initial discovery of the barrier layer was made by analyzing pure apatite samples before and after leaching using an optical microscope. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses proved the coating was calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4-1/2H2O) and that unreacted apatite existed beneath the coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs depict the CaSO4-1/2H2O morphology as long slender crystals adhering to the apatite surface. It was also shown that grinding the leached tailings and leaching again in the H2SO4-methanol system resulted in additional phosphate extraction.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop and improve mining methods for mining thin coal beds, to increase productivity, and to increase the recovery of coal. German coal planers and a modified longwall system of mining were introduced into American mines and are bringing about increased productivity and better recovery as compared with the conventional methods displaced. Since the first installation, 4 additional planers have been purchased by coal companies and over 1-1/2 mil¬lion tons of coal has been mined by them, using the modified longwall mining method. INTRODUCTION Except from 1932 to 1934, the growth of mechanical loading in underground bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States has increased steadily. The amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground mines has increased from 0.3 percent in 1923 to 79.6 percent of the total underground production in 1953.3/ The use of new and improved mining machines and auxiliary equipment, together with new techniques in mining methods, usually has resulted in increased productivity.

In previous research, the laminated overburden model from the LaModel program was effectively integrated with Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) through ARMPS-like input to create a laboratory version of the new ?ARMPS-LAM? program. This program takes the basic ARMPS geometric input for defining the mining plan and loading condition, and then automatically develops, grids, runs, and analyzes a full LaModel analysis of the mining geometry to output the section stability factor (SF), all without further user input. The initial ARMPS-LAM results were encouraging with a case history classification accuracy of 55% to 71%; however, a few of the input variables that were nominally included in the SF calculation showed independent significance in the classification accuracy. Therefore, in order to further improve the accuracy of the ARMPS-LAM program, an investigation of the SFs calculated by the new ARMPS-LAM program and the ARMPS program is detailed in this paper. The initial results of a linear correlation between the ARMPS-LAM SF and the ARMPS SF showed a strong correlation (R2 = 0.88), with the ARMPS-LAM SF averaging about 8% higher. The difference in SFs between the programs were further investigated, and, ultimately, the results indicated that the laminated overburden model as implemented in ARMPS-LAM distributes relatively more load on the section pillars for depths less than about 1,000 ft and less load for depths more than 1,000 ft. The results of this research highlight the potential for improving the ARMPS-LAM program in the future by implementing a more accurate loading calculation on the section pillars.

"More than 73 million pounds of rock dust were used by the bituminous-coal-mining companies in the United States during 1930 to present or limit loss of life and destruction of property from explosions of gas and coal dust in underground mining operations, according to statistics compiled by the United States Bureau of Mines from reports furnished by mine operators. The mines using rock dust produced 65. 691, 753 tons of coal during the year, more than 30 percent of the total production of bituminous coal from underground mines in the United States that year. Although only 382 out of a total of 5,629 active underground bituminous mines applied rock dust to underground working as a precaution against explosions, they were chiefly the larger producing mines, employing 25.4 percent of all of the underground bitumious mine workers in the United States and accounting for 27.4 percent of the total number of man-hours worked underground at bituminous mines.a summary of the reports for the 382 mines using rock dust showed a total production of 96,691,755 tons of bituminous coal, 89,503 men employed underground, and 129,718,965 man-hours worked by the underground employees. (See tables 1 and 2.) These mines averaged 8.76 pounds of rock dust per ton of coal shown by reports from 385 mines using rock dust in 1932 (See table 3.)"

FROM the Pittsburgh coal bed in the four states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia has been produced an output that, at mine prices, represents a greater value than any other single mineral deposit in the world has yielded.12 While this distinction may in a few years pass to the gold reef of the Witwatersrand, it is possible that eventually, owing to the tremendous reserves still remaining, the ultimate yield of the Pittsburgh bed will be greater than that of any other known single deposit. Considering its importance, not a great deal has been written of its early history and development as a whole; most of the accounts have been of limited localities, or, at the most, of the area within a single state. In "Coal through the Ages" the writer mentioned some references to its early history, but this study will deal not only with its history but with the character of the bed, where and why it was first developed, and its effect upon the states in which it is found. It has not been the intention to write a detailed history of the development of the seam in each locality, as neither time nor inclination were available for doing such work, but only to show the influences that tended to hasten or retard such development. In general the historical matter ends about 1830, when geological surveys began to be made. Some of the maps show data available only since that time, and the sections about coal preparation and coking have been extended to the present time to show the changing conditions. It is believed that the early history includes all published records, and many more sources than those shown in the bibliography were consulted. It is quite likely that some references to coal in this area may be found in the unpublished papers of some of our early soldiers and colonizers, which exist in several libraries, and it is hoped that some future

Technology has no recognized rank in what is called polite literature; the subject-matter of engineering is not supposed to lend itself to artistic treatment; we are the hewers of wood and drawers of water to the high-priests of learning that live on the cold summit above our humbler dwellings. Therefore the hierophants smile at the notion of 'style1-" that curiously personal thingy-in technical writing. The "great art" of Pater, the "inevitable phrase" of Raleigh, the "note of distinction" that Arnold demanded are said to be beyond the scope, as they are supposed to be beside the need, of a writer on geology or engineering. This is a narrow view. Science, no less than belles lettres, calls for the best exercise of the human intelligence; the art of writing should be employed as skilfully and as earnestly in a description of the structure of the Sierra Nevada, or of the construction of a tunnel through the range, as in a rhapsody welcoming the rosy fingers of the dawn. The idea still lingers that fine writing does not befit technology, even though the masters of the Victorian period-Huxley, Tyndall, Ruskin-proved that science is worthy to be arrayed in the best robes that the looms of thought can weave. At the beginning of these lectures I quoted Barrie's remark touching the inability of the scientific man to express himself. That imputation has been passed to the technologist, whose utilitarian pursuits are supposed to make him too clumsy for the refinements of human speech. We may not have acquired the self-consciousness of those writers on Art whose "power of expression is so cultivated that their sensual caterwauling may be almost mistaken for the music of the spheres"; nor can we imitate the politicians, who have the ability to speak far beyond anything that they may have to say; but we too have a litera-

[Utilization of small stone is recognized as one of the important problems of the lime industry. The term ?small stone' is used to designate material that is too small for calcination in tie shaft kilo. The maximum dimension A such stone rosy be placed at four inches. The introduction of any considerable quantity of stone having demensions lee: than this into the charge of a kiln impedes the draft and readers successful operation of the kiln difficult on impossible. Attempts design a shaft kiln which would calcine stall stone satisfactorily have not been successful to date. Thousands of tons of this small stone arc produced daily, and while part of it finds a market, for it has many uses, the profit is usually small an competition is teen and prices are low. Production of the material is, however, so greatly in excess of market that surplus of hundreds or possibly thousands of Jose axe place daily in stock piles and classified as waste. in a few instances a fortunate combination of circumstances, such as a program of or other work requiring large quantities of concrete aggregate, may mate it possible some quarries to market this stone later at a profit, teat in general the chances A profitable utilization are slight, and the quarry operator has the expense of handling this waste stone and providing a storage site for it. The brittle nature of limestone makes it impossible to quarry the stone and crush, it to size suitable for the shaft kilns without producing an excess of undesirable fines. On the contrary, the adoption of more modern methods of quarrying in recent years has increased the proportion of small material. The tendency is to blast the roan with large charges of explosives and crush it with mechanical crushers, which produces more fines than the older methods of careful blasting with small char yes and sledging the rock by hand.. We increasing use of underground mining of limestone has also increased the production of small stone, as blasting in the confined space of an underground stope shatters the rocs more completely than quarrying in the open. The use of the very friable limestones, such as the limestone of Florida for the manufacture of lime adds a new factor to the calcination of small stone. In this study, selective flocculating of diaspore using anion macromolecular reagent as flocculant was tested to separate diaspore from alum-silicate minerals. Firstly, the effect of pH on settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite dispersions has been investigated. The results show that the maximum settling speed of diaspore and kaolinite appeared re-spectively at pH7 and pH3.33 which is close to the point of zero charge (PZC) of diaspore (6.8) and kaolinite(3.5). This result is in well agreement with the double electric layer theory. Secondly, the settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite particles in different anion flocculant solution have been researched. The results indicate that flocculant solution concentration significantly affect the selectivity and the flocculating performance of anion molecular. In high concentration solution, both diaspore and kaolinite have faster settling rate compared to blank solution. How-ever, in low concentration solution, the anion macromolecular can enhance the settling rate of diaspore remarkably but has no apparent effect on the settling rate of kaolinite. This result suggests that the tested anion flocculant is a promising reagent for de-silica of diasporic bauxite. Lastly, FTIR method was employed to probe the adsorption mechanism of flocculant on diaspore and kaolinite. The results reveal that there are anion flocculant characteristic bands on the spectra of diaspore but no obvious characteristic bands of flocculant on the FTIR spectrum of kaolinite. This result is in good correspondence with settling test.

ACCORDING to our office dictionary, geology is "the science that investigates the structure of the earth and its successive physical changes", and a geologist is "one who knows the science of the structure of the earth". No doubt this definition does not suit all of us. Another dictionary would have the definition slightly different. As an example, one dictionary stated that "a geologist is one who practices geology". (Some of our clients told us to quit practising and get to work). There are many different types of geologists engaged in various branches of the profession and some of these are further broken down into subdivisions so that specialization is becoming more and more prevalent. As a result it is, in some cases, doubtful whether or not we are actually dealing with a geologist in the generally accepted sense of the term.

A program has been written to combine the Klimpel-Austin approximate model for liberation in a binary system with a mill model applicable to ball milling. The model applies for a system where the volume fraction of valuable B in host matrix A is small. The mill model is treated as an equivalent series of fully-mixed reactors. Twenty-three classes of material are considered: pure A; pure B; unchanged AB; 0-10.2 B in AB either as surfac- exposed B or as wholly-contained grains of B; 10-20% B in AB, surface-exposed or wholly- contained;etc.. to 90-100% /b ub /ABm syrface-exposed or wholly-contained. Illustrative cases are given making reasonable assumptions concerning relative rates of breakage and primary breakage distribution functions for each class of material.

However excellent the geologic map of an area is, it can only show what is exposed on the ground. It cannot and should not generalize the information nor complete the picture by inference: this is left to the examiner. Consequently, it becomes justified for him to use all expressions of geologic structure in order to gain an additional dimension in geologic interpretation, and particularly so in mineral exploration. In previous studies related to Arizona, the known faults were the starting points and a host of interpolated, supporting geologic factors described in earlier publications ascertained the presence of a series of structural trends and lineaments found to be rather continuous and persistent, even though unsubstantiated by geologic maps. In present studies pertaining to the humid environment, with the same aim of seeking major structural trends and lineaments, the starting points are morphologic expressions such as straight lakes and straight segments of rivers, among others, because there generally is not enough geology available. An example is given herewith for an area that straddles the International Border, north of Spokane. In both semi-arid and humid environments, one observes that mineral deposits quite often occur close to the intersection of a major fracture or lineament with some secondary trend.

Power draw of the mill has been accepted as an indicator of the performance of the mill, yet the problem of predicting power under a given set of mill operating conditions still remains to be solved. In the literature, this problem of predicting power is attributed to a lack of knowledge with regard to the motion of the charge. Here a DEM based model is used to analyze the motion of the charge. The resulting information is used to predict the power draw of the mill. A 16-ft diameter mill is simulated. A factorial design study of the variables-mill speed, lifter configuration and ball size distribution-as independent variables is taken up. The power draw as a response variable is analyzed to establish the best operating condition of the mill.

"IntroductionTHE PROBLEM of producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and other raw materials is of increasing importance in Canada as well as in the United States. This is due, to a large extent, to the continually increasing demand for gasoline and other liquid products which are now obtained solely from petroleum. The United States has reached a position where domestic supplies of crude petroleum must be augmented by imports and Canada is still a long way from self-sufficiency. In the event of war, there might well be an immediate need to find supplementary sources of liquid fuels. It is, therefore, expedient to consider alternative sources of production now -well in advance of the time when supplies of petroleum may prove inadequate to meet requirements.The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of the history of liquid fuel production from coal, to describe briefly the research sponsored by the Federal Government on the coal hydrogenation process, and finally to evaluate the present status and future trend of the synthetic fuel industry, with special reference to necessary research work.History of the Oil-From-Coal IndustryThe history -of coal liquefaction began in 1913, in Germany, with the work of Frederick Bergius. Enargite, known as one of the major arsenic containing copper minerals, with approximately 19% arsenic, introduces challenges to typical processing options. In most hydrometallurgical processing methods, arsenic remediation occurs after the copper recovery in an autoclave or in a stepwise neutralization process. In this study, the in situ precipitation of scorodite was investigated during an atmospheric leaching process in the presence of carbon-based catalysts and chloride media. The effective parameters of initial ferric addition, temperature, catalyst addition, and oxygen sparging rate were studied and the ferric behaviour was monitored during the scorodite precipitation. The most influential parameters on efficient scorodite precipitation are found to be: initial ferric addition, catalyst to concentrate ratio, and temperature. A 99% scorodite precipitation yield was achieved in this process.
