Granular systems, i.e. particles with realistic shapes, are commonly encountered in nature and industry. While the discrete element method (DEM) is a tool for the simulation of granular flow, in most of the DEM simulation particles are assumed to be spherical. It is questionable whether results drawn from a spherical particle could be easily transferred to a non-spherical particle. Thus, obtaining a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics of granular flows is not only of academic interest, but is also highly related to industrial applications. An in-house developed DEM software called KMPCDEM ©, which was coded to handle non-spherical particles, was used to simulate the particle behaviour. In this paper, the effect of particle shape on the dynamics of particles of non-spherical and spherical shape, including algorithms for the determination of the particle orientation, the moment of inertia, shape representation, and computation time was described. The assumption of a spherical shape has been justified by the complexity of simulation and significantly higher computation time if a realistic shape for particles was used. Dynamics differences showed that findings obtained from spherical particle systems could not be readily extrapolated to non-spherical particle systems. Consequently, particle shape is an important, if not even the most important parameter to be considered in DEM simulations, and therefore has to be captured accurately if DEM is to be used as a predictive tool. The effect of a sulfite reagent on the floatability of chalcopyrite and enargite was investigated in this paper. The flotation tests using single and mixed minerals were performed under various concentrations of sulfite. The flotation tests using a single mineral showed that the sulfite reagent depressed the natural floatability of both minerals at pH 9. Surprisingly, enargite was floated after the addition of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) following the sulfite treatment, and the floatability of chalcopyrite depressed under a similar condition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results showed that the sulfate species increased after the sulfite treatment on both minerals. However, the addition of PAX removed this sulfate species and rendered the enargite surface hydrophobic. This phenomenon was not observed on the chalcopyrite surface. FTIR analysis and PAX adsorption studies were performed to support this finding. The flotation of a mixed mineral was in agreement with the flotation of a single mineral, indicating a possibility for selective flotation of chalcopyrite and enargite using the proposed method. Este estudo avaliou os recentes desenvolvimentos em tecnologias para recobrimento de tubos metálicos utilizados na indústria petroquímica a partir de informações contidas em documentos de patentes depositadas entre os anos de 1996 e 2015. Destacaram-se novas composições para tintas e vernizes e processos de endurecimento e proteção à corrosão nos materiais metálicos. EUA, Japão e China figuram como os países que sediam o maior número de desenvolvimentos enquanto América do Norte, Europa e Ásia apontam como os principais mercados de interesse. No entanto, o estágio de desenvolvimento tecnológico sugere incerteza futura frente a novas soluções, sendo necessários estudos adicionais para confirmar as tendências observadas.

A indústria siderúrgica gera cerca de 600 quilogramas de resíduos por tonelada de aço bruto produzido. Estes resíduos, conforme estabelecido pela legislação ambiental vigente, devem ter uma destinação final adequada de forma a não acarretar poluição do meio ambiente. Além disso, a preocupação com a sustentabilidade e a escassez de recursos minerais não renováveis tem feito com que as usinas siderúrgicas invistam cada vez mais no desenvolvimento de meios de produção mais econômicos e menos poluidores e na busca de métodos adequados para a reciclagem ou a reutilização dos resíduos gerados, de forma a minimizar a quantidade de resíduos estocados ou destinados a aterros industriais. Neste contexto, destaca-se a escória e a lama de aciaria LD. Assim, este trabalho, avalia as possíveis tecnologias aplicáveis ao gerenciamento ambiental destes resíduos, apontando as tendências e as alternativas tecnológicas para seus tratamentos, de modo a contribuir para o aumento da sustentabilidade deste setor industrial.

Com o aumento da complexidade dos materiais metálicos, duas ou mais fases produto podem nuclear simultaneamente durante uma transformação de fase. A nucleação de novos grãos pode ocorrer por saturação de sítios ou por taxa constante. Neste contexto, esse trabalho busca estudar a influência da transformação simultânea com nucleação por taxa constante de duas fases produto na cinética, na microestrutura e na distribuição do tamanho de grão em uma região tridimensional. A efeito de comparação, também foi realizado o estudo de reações em que uma fase nucleia por saturação de sítios e a outra fase, por taxa constante e ambas iniciam sua transformação no instante inicial, de forma simultânea. Os resultados obtidos computacionalmente foram comparados às equações analíticas, apresentando ótima concordância entre os modelos. Foi observado que parâmetros microestruturais como tamanho médio de grãos e morfologia das interfaces podem auxiliar o pesquisador a identificar o tipo de nucleação, seja por saturação de sítios, seja por taxa constante.

In the traditional chlorination roasting-water leaching-solvent extraction process for the extraction of rubidium-bearing ore, Rb leaching from the ore and calcium removing from the leachate are conducted separately, and this results in the complicated process and high energy consumption. In order to integrate the Rb leaching and calcium removing processes, Rb-bearing polymetallic ore was firstly treated by chlorination roasting, it was then leached in a micro-reactor with raffinate, and the calcium ions in the leachate were removed in the reactor as carbonate precipitates by passing CO2 at certain pressure into the reactor. The effects of raffinate alkalinity, CO2 pressure, and CO2 reaction time on Rb leaching rate and calcium removing rate were investigated. The experimental results show that when Rb-bearing polymetallic ore was leached for 90 min by stirring with raffinate with 1.125-mol/L alkalinity, and the pulp was made to react with CO2 at 0.8 MPa for 15 min, the Rb leaching rate and calcium removing rate amounted to 92% and 98.2%, respectively. This integrated process including Rb leaching from Rb-bearing polymetallic ore and calcium removing from leachate could simplify the process for the extraction of Rb-bearing ore and increase its economic benefits.

To investigate the effects of flow geometry on laminar flames, studies are in progress in this laboratory employing Bunsen-type burners with rectangular cross section. Interpretation of these studies requires a determination of the flow velocity at all points of the rectangular cross section for one dimensional steady laminar flow. In addition, values of the velocity gradient at the boundary for such flows are needed in the interpretation of blow-off and flash-back studies with burners of rectangular cross section. The hydrodynamical problem of steady laminar flow of a viscous fluid in channels of rectangular cross section was solved by Stokes. His results have been quoted by Love21 and by Dryden, Murnaghan, and Bateman,§/ and they have been discussed by Boussines and by Paschoud. It may be noted that the steady laminar flow of a viscous fluid in channels of rectangular cross section constitutes a hydrodynamical analogue for the problem of the torsion of an isotropic prism of rectangular cross section.

Major diamond pipes discovered in Western Australia in the late-1970s exhibited a number of unique features that not only resulted in Australia becoming the largest diamond producer in the world in volume terms by 1986 but also changed geological thinking on the primary occurrence of diamond. They were: - lamproite is an alternative primary diamond host to kimberlite. - the extremely high mean grade of the Argyle lamproite pipe at 5 ct per tonne. - the tectonic setting of the lamproite pipes in mobile zones mar- ginal to the Kimberley Craton in contrast to the traditional African setting within stable cratons. Diamond was one of the earliest economic minerals discovered in Australia but 128 years elapsed between its first recognition and the first Australian economic pipe discovery (Argyle). During that period some 200,000 ct of alluvial diamonds were mined in Australia (mostly in New South Wales), but such alluvial output is insignificant on the world scene where annual production today runs at 95 million ct of natural stones some 76010 of which comes from primary pipe sources such as Argyle which alone produces 30 million ct per annum. Of particular significance therefore is the geological nature of the primary diamond source rocks in Australia. The Argyle and Ellendale Pipes are lamproites, differing from kimberlite in their mineralogy and geochemistry, and characterised by the presence of typical lamproite minerals such as leucite, priderite, potassic richterite, and the abnormally high content of chemical elements incompatible with ultramafic rocks. The critical surface tension of wetting (?c) of Cu2S, FeS2, PbS, and MoS2 were determined by plotting flotation recovery versus YLV which was arranged by methanol, and Extra-polating to % R = 0. ?c values ranged from 26 dyne cm-1 for MoS2 to 49 dyne cm-1 for PbS and elemental sulfur gave a value of 31.5 dyne cm-1. Minerals exhibiting natural flotability of different extents, could be separated from their mixtures in the absence of conventional flotation reagents, but controlled ?LV. Correlations between non-stoichiometry and degree of natural hydrophobicity for MOS2 are also reported in this paper.

THE investigation herein described had its beginning in the chemical laboratory of the Department of the Interior, Calgary. After the transfer of the natural resources to the Province of Alberta in 1930, the laboratory was closed and the investigation discontinued, but in 1933, with the permission of the Director of the Mines Branch, the work was again taken up and brought to completion. OBJECT OF THE INVESTIGATION The object of the investigation as originally planned may be stated as follows : (1) To determine the chemical composition of the limestone formation underlying Turner Valley gas field. (2) To identify 'beds' in the limestone, if such existed, with definitecharacteristics which would mark them from immediately overlying and underlying measures. (3) To relate information acquired on the composition of the limestone to the occurrence of oil and gas in the particular section examined. Definite information was lacking as to the exact chemical composition of the limestone and of its variations in composition at various depths. The formation was generally referred to in the field as the 'dolomitic' limestone, but the depth to which the dolomitized zone extended and the degree to which the limestone generally had become dolomitized were not known. Jn the drilling and logging of wells, the recognition of suitable 'markers' in the various formations is a matter of some importance. Markers are generally relatively small but widespread members of a formation, which have some characteristic property, of colour, composition, or form, by which they may be identified, and with them, consequently, the formation of which they form a part. In the formations above the limestone in Turner Valley, a number of well defined and easily recognized markers are known to geologists, drillers, and others interested in the field. Many of these markers Hand out in sharp contrast to adjoining measures and are therefore easily recognized; in others, the contrast is less sharp, with consequent difficulty in identification.

Circuit samples from the HBMS concentrator were assayed for l5elements, and image analysis was done to determine the modal quantities, grain size distributions and liberations of the minerals. Material balancing was done on these data to determine distributions of the minerals in each concentrator stream. The ore was mined during the waning phase of mining and is diluted with backfilled copper smelter slag. The mill feed grades 1.0 wt% Cu and 1.8 wt% Zn. The slag silicate phases contain approximately 1.5 wt% Cu and 6.5 wt% Zn; therefore the Cu and Zn head grades due to chalcopyrite and sphalerite, are only 0.9 wt% Cu and 1.2 wt% Zn, respectively. The recovery of Cu in the Cu-concentrate (Cu-conc.) is only 77.5 %, whereas that of chalcopyrite is 89.2 %. Similarly, the recovery of Zn in the Zn-concentrate (Zn-conc.) is only 40.2 %, whereas that of sphalerite is 71.0 %. The slag accounts for approximately 60 % of the Cu, and 85 % of the Zn in the tailings. The main loss of chalcopyrite is as unliberated grains to the tailings, and the main loss of sphalerite is as free grains to the Cu-concentrate and as unliberated grains to the Cu-concentrate and tailings. Approximately 85 % of the chalcopyrite and sphalerite lost to the tailings. accounting for 8 % and 10 % of the respective minerals in the concentrator feed, occur as middling and sub-middling grains. Extremely fine regrinding would be required to liberate these minerals.

Copper sulphate is a common flotation reagent for blonde ores. Metallic iron also is present in the mill circuit, and a reaction between the iron and the salt would be in accord with well-known chemistry. The abundance of metallic iron in a flotation food may be noted by even perfunctory examination. First of all the mine contributes metallic iron, then the coarse-crushing machines add their share, and finally the fine-grinding medium its portion. If the grinding is with cast-iron balls the amount of metallics is greater than when steel is used. Thus it, is that much more metallic iron is present than would be indicated by noting the ball consumption. An estimate that the total amount of metallics is twice that supplied by the balls and liners might not be far amiss. That copper sulphate plates out on iron in an acid solution is well known, but since flotation is practiced commonly in solutions where acid has not been added this reaction has not been given sufficient thought.

"Low back pains account for about 13 per cent of all compensation claims made to the Quebec Workmen's Compensation Commission and cost the employers a sum exceeding ten million dollars. The frequency and cost of these health problems in Quebec metal mines are proportional to the provincial trends. An elaborate review of the literature on the causes, nature and prevention of low back pain is made in this presentation. A prevention program for low back pain has been designed in cooperation with a team of seven medical specialists and two physiotherapists for the Quebec metal mines. The program is especially designed for persons who have had low back pain, in order to prevent a recurrence, and for persons beginning to feel chronic difficulties. It is based on existing programs at the Hawthorne Plant of Western Electric Company and at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, but it requires a much different approach because of the nature of medical care available at the mining sites. The program is difficult because it involves a change of attitude for every employee and every supervisor. The program, so far, is beneficial because several men are now seriously engaged in an active program of reconditioning and because the problem of low back pain ie beginning to be seen from a new angle."

The Vesta Preparation Plant of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation is located on the Monongahela River, eight miles south of Brownsville, Pennsylvania. This plant is capable of cleaning 2400 NT/hr of a mixture of Pittsburgh seam high volatile coals from the Vesta and Shannopin mines to produce a metallurgical coal of 6.75% ash and a steam coal containing 14% ash. Heavy media vessels are utilized to upgrade the coarse coal while launders and tables. handle the -1/4" fraction of the raw coal feed. Cleaned -coal goes to boot classifiers where the +48 mesh material settles and is removed by bucket elevators. This 1/4 x 48 mesh material is then sent to centrifugal driers for dewatering. As designed, the minus 48 mesh fraction overflows the boot as a 7 to 8% solids slurry and is recovered by cyclones and a thickener and dewatered by filtration. The-products of the heavy media circuit, the launder-table-boot-drier circuit and the cyclone-thickener-filter circuit are combined to constitute the shipped metallurgical coal. This Vesta-Shannopin mix is combined at J&L's Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works with purchased low and medium volatile coals for the production of metallurgical coke.

Talc is currently mined in the U.S. in six major districts. The size and depth of the ore bodies and their mineralogy dictate the types of products manufactured and the mining and processing methods which must be employed. The geology of the major deposits is well known and will be but briefly discussed The major emphasis will be placed upon the past history of the districts, the size and depth and configurations of the ore bodies, the ore mineralogy, and how all of these factors govern the types of mining and processing operations which may be employed in each of the districts.

Asbestos is a generic term for industrially useful fibers recovered from exploitable deposits of the asbestiform varieties of five silicate minerals: chrysotile, anthophyllite, actinolite-tremolite, cummingtonite-grunerite, and riebeckite. Asbestos and asbestiformm fibers of some other minerals are known to be carcinogenic. Minerals crystallized in the asbestiform habit are characterized by unique properties (morphology, strength and flexibility, physical and chemical durability, and defect-free surface structures). The key to the unusual properties, and health effects, of asbestifarm fibers appears to be in their unusual surface structure. In contrast, non-asbestiform crystals of the same minerals, including the five so-called asbestos minerals do not have these properties and are not carcinogenic (1, 2).

Kuroko deposit is a stratabound massive sulphide and sulphate deposit associated with Miocene submarine volcanics and has been considered to be a prototype of meta- morphosed Palaeozoic and Precambrian equivalents. Since the discovery of Uchinotai deposit of the Kosaka mine in 1959, Dowa and other mining companies have conducted intensive exploration work in the Hokuroku district of northeastern Japan. Dowa has been placing its first priority on the exploration of Kuroko deposits and made a series of remarkable successes in finding the Kuroko deposits, i.e. Uchinotai, 1959; Matsumine, 1963; Uwamiki, 1966; Fukazawa, 1969 and Ezuri, 1975. It is emphasized that our successes have resulted from the proper application of exploration technologies accumulated through our experiences. Firstly we defined the Kuroko horizon and favourable felsic volcanism based on the detailed structural and volczno-stratigraphic study of the Hokuroku district, and then delineated the promising areas by means of the quantitative evaluation of geophysical, geochemical and mineralogical parameters such as the magnetic susceptibility and contents of alkaline and alkaline earth metals in the foot wall dacites and clay mineral assemblages of both hanging and foot wall pyroclastics and dacites. Practical application of these techniques is essential to our routine Kuroko exploration.

The impact of the computer revolution--so pervasive in some industries--has been less startling in the mining industry. Computer techniques have been used successfully to provide drill hole calculations, contour maps, and a variety of conventional maintenance scheduling, and accounting applications. But it is our experience that the real economic payoffs lie in the engineering application of computers to mine planning and the use of systems engineering techniques for mine operations. Since 1964, Newmont Mining Corporation has been engaged in systematic research and development of computer techniques in a variety of mine planning applications. The general objective in using computers has been twofold: first, to arrive at a viable, near-optimum plan for mining a particular orebody, and second, to decrease the financial investment by reducing the man-hours required for mine planning. Three major phases in the evolution of these computer techniques for mine planning are discernible. In phase one, the machine capability for duplicating manual drafting and contour mapping was developed. The necessity of including all recognized geologic characteristics is obvious. Capability for properly incorporating structure, stratigraphic trends, and other geological features was a significant aspect of phase one development.
