Coal mine ventilation systems are often subject to high leakage rates. As a result, changes in airflow resistance will strongly affect the efficiency with which air is delivered to the working place. One major source of airflow resistance is the line brattice used to direct air from the last open crosscut to the working face. Because it is a great distance from the fan, the resistance of the line brattice can result in more overall leakage than an equivalent resistance closer to the fan. Substituting auxiliary fans for brattice eliminates this source of resistance, with improvements in system efficiency and cost. Also, in some mines, the leakage that leads to spontaneous combustion can be reduced. The benefits obtained by several different brattice and fan substitutions have been studied by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc., Lafayette, CA, under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Changes in main fan duty were compared with additional costs associated with auxiliary fans. Results indicate that in some circumstances, considerable leakage reductions and cost savings are possible.

(San Francisco meeting, October, 1911.) THE nature of slimes handled in the treatment of gold- and silver-ores has been discussed in technical literature to a considerable extent. The subject of slime-filtration from the practical worker's stand-point has also received much comment, and scattered through the literature of the subject are descriptions of many slime-filtration installations. Articles of this nature serve a valuable purpose and assist materially in the design of new and the improvement of old plants. The subject of the physics of slime-filtration has been touched upon to only a slight extent. The underlying principles are worthy of more intensive study and experimentation than they have received, and the main purpose of this paper is to present the results of such study and experimental work as will serve to make clear in part at least many of the principles which control the filtration of slime. Nature of Slime. Much has bean written concerning an accurate definition of the term ? slime," but no comprehensive definition seems to be generally accepted. The reason for this is clear. A slime consists of at least three different substances, each, when separated, possessing distinctly different physical and to a certain extent chemical properties. These substances are extremely fine sand, a colloidal material which may be and generally is in a coagulated condition, and a colloidal material which is in a non-coagulated condition. Suspending a slime in a relatively large volume of water by shaking and allowing sedimentation to take place, results in the fine sand settling out with comparative rapidity, followed by the coagulated material, which settles much more slowly and finally a certain portion remains

Filter media can be defined as that material which effects the removal of finely divided solids from a fluid. Thus the removal of dust from air or turbidity from water, for example, can be the result of passing the fluid through a properly supported filter media. Since filtration in one form or another has been practiced since pre¬historic times filter media have been made from an extremely wide variety of materials. Vegetable and synthetic fibers (used loose, or formed into papers, felts or cloth) sand, ground coal, diatomite, perlite, wire cloth, porous metal, and bonded aluminum oxide are among the more important materials used today.

The centre of the mining operations of the International Nickel Company, Ontario Division is Sudbury, a city of 160,000 population located 240 miles northwest of Toronto (Fig. 1). Within thirty miles of this city and located around the rim of the geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin are the ten underground mines and one open pit operated by the Company (Fig. 2). There are also four developing mines, three in the Sudbury area and one at Shebandowan, near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and approximately 150 miles north east of Duluth, Minnesota. In 1971 the mines produced 22,800,000 tons, 20,600,000 tons from underground and the balance from open pits. Also located in the Sudbury District are facilities to extract and refine the metals contained in the ore. There is a nickel refinery located at Port Colborne on Lake Erie. An additional nickel refinery is under construction near Sudbury. Fifteen elements are recovered from the Sudbury ores, nickel, copper, iron, sulphur, gold, silver, cobalt, tellurium and the six platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. Commercial explosives range from pure emulsions to pure ANFO, with blends of these providing interesting alternatives: energy is often adjusted through addition of aluminium, or the control of density. The energy rating of explosives is derived chiefly from detonation codes, which are used to derive expressions for the internal energy change of the detonation products as they do work under expansion. While all codes used for this purpose work on the basis of Ideal detonation, it is common knowledge that commercial explosives operate in the Non-Ideal domain, which affects the mode of energy delivery to the environment. However, since Ideality represents the foundation from which actual performance evolves, it is valuable to examine the intrinsic energy release of a formulation before attempting to understand the influence of Non-Ideality. In examining the Ideal pressure profile of fundamental formulations, remarkable correlation has been found with field performance, and this increases understanding of the influence of various formulation modifications, especially in regard to the stage at which energy is released, and the effect on rockbreaking. This work has emphasised the value of attempting to understand and define better the non-ideal detonation process.

[One of the major problems in the purchase and sale of coal shipped in lake or ocean going vessels has always been the difficulty in obtaining a true analysis of the shipped coal?s quality because of faulty sampling by manual methods. As long as coal was sampled according to standards set up by ASTM methods designated D 492-48 there generally were no quarrels with the results obtained. However, due to varied weather conditions and because of the large number of cars sampled, there is no assurance that prescribed manual methods of sampling will always be followed. Because of this problem, the organization previously called American Coal Sales Association, now part of the National Coal Association, set up a committee compose of representatives from coal producers, coal shippers and coal consumers to study this sampling problem and to devise, if possible, a means of sampling on the high lift dumpers which could be automated so that a; true sample of the coal as loaded in the railroad car could be obtained.]

Incineration is an attractive alternative to the disposal of MSW in landfill sites. However, the process of incineration generates fly ash which contains significant levels of leachable heavy metals - particularly cadmium, lead, and zinc - and it is essential to manage this fly ash in an environmentally sound manner. The compositions, phases, textures, morphologies and size of fly ash particles have been studied by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray microanalysis, and X-ray diffraction. The detailed spatial relationships and speciation of the environmentally significant constituents have received particular emphasis. The information obtained is useful in understanding how fly ash is formed during incineration, in understanding the leaching behavior of untreated fly ash if it is disposed of in a landfill and, most importantly, in guiding the development of the best treatment strategies for fly asti to mitigate its environmental impact.

Even as the rational selection of excavation equipment requires a matching of machine performance capabilities to rock response characteristics, the functional features of transportation systems must be matched to the characteristics of the materials handled in order to secure optimum, trouble-free operation. In particular, ore passes and chutes must be designed for flow in order to insure controlled draw whenever a chute is opened. The alternative to quantitative design is, of course, the well known ad hoc procedure of freeing plugged ore passes, cleaning up spillage from flooded chutes, etc., after installation of the system. Since the voluminous empirical work sporadically undertaken through the years evidently had not led to reliable design methodology, it seemed worthwhile to attempt a rational and complete description of the movement of material through ore passes. The concepts of de- formable body mechanics applicable to gravity-induced flows of granular media or "soils" were involved. Accordingly, the mathematical theory of soil plasticity was adopted as a working hypothesis, and a two-dimensional laboratory model of an ore pass constructed in order to investigate the appropriateness of the theory. The general experimental strategy consisted of formulating the movement of material in ore passes as a boundary value problem in soil plasticity, determining the required boundary values of stress and velocity experimentally, and then using these data for the initiation of a theoretical solution for stress and velocity throughout the moving mass of material. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental constituted the test of the original hypothesis.

AN extensive recent trip throughout the mining districts of the Southwest, Central West, an Northwest,' reveals a numbes of interesting conditions that have influenced operators, in both large and small mills, to modify their flow sheets insofar as they pertain to crushing and grinding. The changes made and planned for the future should be of interest. It is interesting to note when traveling through the country, how ideas change and practice is modified, and it is rather amusing to see how milling methods seem to run, more or less, in cycles. New ideas and developments are brought about which run through the industry and are taken up by many of the best and most well informed operators. Some of them will change, sooner or later, back to their old practice; for, like everything .else, what will work well in one place will not necessarily be suited to another. On the other hand, it is often difficult to establish. other practices known to be of value, owing to the natural resistance to make a change, but on the whole, the western mill men seem to be more alive to possible benefits of various modifications than any other engineers with whom I have come in contact in all parts of the world. Mill men in other parts of the world always keep in con- tact with what is being done in the western part of the United States, but it does not necessarily follow that those in the western part of the United States are always right. Some of these changes that have been made and afterward abandoned will be referred to later.

An unprecedented growth in demand for coal exports has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee that their capacity expansion projects will meet the required demand. These projects, however, are taking place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment - competing rail and coal terminal service providers as well as a myriad of competing mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing system complexity and integration has driven the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems, their sensitivity to uncertainty and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to both maximising value and minimising risk.Recently, TSG has worked closely together with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of key stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to develop independent system master plans. These master plans have provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. This paper describes the Darwin Silver Recovery project, located 66 km (40 miles) outside of Lone Pine, near Darwin, Inyo County, California. A lead-zinc mine and a flotation concentrator were operated there from 1945 to 1957. By the time the mine was shut down, 1.53 Tg (1.69 million short tons) of tailings had been stored in ponds. An average silver assay of 47 mg/kg (1.38 troy oz/st) of tailings stimulated interest for commercial silver recovery. A heap leach process was developed in 1981 at the Tucson Research Center of Anaconda Minerals Company, a division of Atlantic Richfield Company. Agglomeration techniques were used on the ore since the fine grind did not allow direct heap leaching. Lime and cement were required as binders, Early laboratory tests showed that recoveries equal to those from an agitated leach could be achieved at lower capital and operating costs. Laboratory tests determined cyanide requirements, lime and cement usages, and percolation or leach rates, as well as confirming that a zinc precipitation step could recover the silver from the leach solution.

Cable shovels are used for primary excavation in in-situ and/or pre-fragmented formations in surface mining operations. Poorly fragmented hard rock formations and random occurrence of hard boulders in soft formations cause extreme variability of material diggability, resulting in varying shovel stress loading. The stress loading of a shovel’s front-end assembly could result in fatigue failure. Conventional design process, which uses physical shovel simulation studies, is very costly and time consuming for achieving statistically significant results. In this paper, rigid and flexible multi-body dynamic theories are used to develop component stress loading and deformation models of the cable shovel, and solved in the ADAMS/NASTRAN/FLEX environments. Detailed simulation experiments are carried out to examine the performance, reliability, durability and efficiency of the P&H 4100A under varying in-situ formation conditions. The results show areas of high stress fields with a maximum stress of 313.31 MPa at node 441 within the hoist rope. The reliability of the results is confirmed by comparing existing test data. The study is significant because it provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

"This presentation will cover the physical properties of waste heat recovery. It is a two part presentation. The first deals with actually recovering the heat with new state of the art heat exchangers and applying that heat to the furnace combustion and the second part will cover what other processes you can enhance with this ""free"" heat. It will also talk about converting it to steam, hot air or electricity to be used or sold back to the utility company. The economics of various schemes will be reviewed. A brief discussion on State and Federal grants and subsidies will be presented.IntroductionThere are large quantities of wasted heat in the usual aluminum melting process. And, there are several techniques for reducing and/or using some of that wasted heat as you have seen. Any technique that can make use of wasted heat is a form of recovery. This can range from simply preheating aluminum billets prior to melting, to more complicated processes like air-to-air heat exchangers using the boiling and condensing characteristics of special fluids in “heat pipes.” The objective of this type energy recovery process is to move the wasted heat from the hot and dirty exhaust gas stream into some useful process.Waste Heat Recovery in the Aluminum Melting Furnace.There are considerations, of course:1) What might the value be of the recovered energy?2) Can the recovered energy be used within the process? Within the plant? Or by theneighbors?3) What is the capital cost?4) Is the recovery process complicated?5) Will it take additional staff?6) Will it cause additional downtime on the melting line?7) Will the operations staff need to be licensed?Ideally, the process will be simple and inexpensive, the recovered energy will be very valuable, and the whole effort will cause little distraction to the aluminum melting process itself. Heavy liquids have come into use in ore-dressing investigations, as they make possible the separation of an ore into its specific-gravity components. A paper containing a general dissertation on heavy liquids has been written by John D. Sullivan,4 and the practical application of heavy liquids is explained by Box and Crabtree5. Some heavy liquids become discolored after continued use, and the lack of transparency impairs their value. Since they are fairly expensive, reclaiming is desirable. This paper briefly discusses the preparation and care of some of the more common heavy liquids.

The cycle time between adjacent stopes is critical to achieving the required production rate from 3500 Orebody; one of the Enterprise Mine orebodies. Current Mt Isa cemented fills require a 90-day cure period which had to be cut to 30 days while maintaining the required strength criteria. The Enterprise Mine Feasibility Study recommended that this be achieved by Cemented Slurry Rock Fill (CSRF), but that on-going research into paste fill be continued. The continuation of the research, in conjunction with overseas visits has recommended that the 3500 Orebody be filled with paste fill, with the potential to fill other orebodies. The paste fill will comprise cyclone and thickener dewatered copper tailings to which Portland Cement (PC) is added before vertical borehole delivery and undergound pipeline reticulation to individual stopes. The benefit is not only re-use of copper tailings but also much reduced binder usage.

The unstable metal market during 1949, with resulting lower metal prices, has focused every mine operator's attention on the problem of reducing operating costs. Improvement in mining, methods, use of modern mechanical mining equipment, and increasing the efficiency of the labor force are the tools with which we will have to work. Careful planning is necessary to coordinate all phases so that no one phase is overdone. A mine may become over-mechanized if, for instance, capital charges against new equipment exceed the savings in labor costs, or where a large enough tonnage is not produced. The cooperation, of labor is essential to any mechanization program. There have been too many instances where mechanization and improvements have done nothing more than make up for a decrease in labor efficiency, thus bringing the production of labor back to its old standard. The operator has gained little and labor has gained only a "softer job." In any mechanization program there are gains to be had by both the operator and labor. By the efficient application of modern equipment and improved mining methods the operator should gain by decreased costs, and labor may profit by receiving a share of these decreased costs.

"Mapping of hydrothermally altered areas, which are usually associated with mineralization, is essential in mineral exploration. In this research, open source reflectance spectroscopy data from the multispectral moderate-resolution Landsat 8 satellite was used to map altered rocks in the Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa. The unique spectral reflectance and absorption characteristics of remotely sensed Landsat data in the visible, near-infrared (NIR), shortwave-infrared (SWIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum were used in different digital image processing techniques. The band ratios (red/blue, SWIR 2/NIR, SWIR 1/NIR), spectral band combinations (Kaufmann ratio, Sabins ratio) and principal component analysis (Crosta technique) were applied to efficiently and successfully map hydrothermal alteration minerals. The results showed that the combination of spectral bands and the principal component analysis method is effective in delineating mineral alteration through remotely sensed satellite data. The validation of results by using the published mineral maps of the Council for Geoscience South Africa showed a good relationship with the identified zones of mineralization. The methodology developed in this study is cost-effective and time-saving, and can be applied to inaccessible and/or new areas with limited ground-based knowledge to obtain reliable and up-to-date mineral information.IntroductionMany developing nations depend on exploration and exploitation of mineral resources to sustain their economic growth. Usually, the traditional mineral exploration techniques require enormous finances, prolonged time, and tremendous manpower, particularly in areas that are not easily reachable (Maduaka, 2014). Furthermore, mineral exploration required state-of-the-art techniques and expertise along with geological, geochemical, and geophysical datasets, which may not be easily available or may be lacking where access is problematic (Kaiser et al., 2002; Bemis et al., 2014). Modern remote sensing technology has proved to be one of the highly efficient and robust techniques used for mineral exploration. The use of remote sensing satellite images for geological mapping and mineral exploration usually involves studying the physicochemical properties of rocks and weathering soils, such as mineralogy, landforms, geochemical signatures, and the spatiall distribution of lineaments (Bhattacharya et al., 2012)."

Operating Characteristics of Centrifugal Fans and Use of Fan Performance Curve Discussion of paper by. Louis W. HUBER, presented at the New York Meeting, 1926, .and issued, as Pamphlet No. 1542-A, with MINING AND METALLURGY, February, 1926. G. BRIGHT, Pittsburgh, Pa.-Apparently from the pressure curves for a forward-curved-blade fan, in Mr. Huber's paper, practically all ventilation-might be stopped with increased resistance. In order, to discuss the characteristics of a fan we need, some better way to measure the characteristics of a mine. You all know that. the average anemometer is not very-reliable. Sometimes two anemometers, supposed to be recently calibrated, will differ 50 per cent. Either this or some other committee should standardize measuring methods. The characteristic curves of fans, given by Mr. Huber, would indicate that the forward-curved-blade fan would cause trouble in attempting parallel operation, because two machines will not parallel unless they have dropping pressure characteristics. On the other hand, it is indicated that with the backward-curved blade, they could easily be paralleled. But few mines use more than one fan. Mr. Huber said that if the resistance of the mine was considerably more than contemplated, the quantity of air might be such that the efficiency of the backward-curved fan would be seriously affected, dropping say from 70 to 55 or 50 per cent. In such event, could a difference of speed be selected for the fan that would give the quantity desired at a higher efficiency? L. W. HUBER, Pittsburgh, Pa.-The backward-curved-blade fan responds to change in speed the same as any other fan; if' the speed is doubled, the quantity of air is doubled, the pressure is increased four times and the horsepower eight times. One point not mentioned in the paper is that the backward-curved fan is more efficient than the forward-curved or any other type. If the latter were more efficient, it would pay to install that type and keep the resistance of the mine constant, which is hard to do but it can be done with care. But the total mechanical efficiency of a fan with backward-curved blades is from 10 to 20 per cent. higher.

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted a 4-year (1979-1982) mineral assessment study of the Chugach National Forest (CNF), Ak, as part of the Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) Program. The USGS remapped the geology and distribution of mineral resources. The Bureau investigated mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences. This report describes the results of Bureau work in the central 790,880 acres of the Forest. Copper, with by-product zinc, silver, and gold, has been the major metal produced from the study area as well as from the entire Chugach National Forest. The majority of the copper deposits are concentrated within basaltic rocks on Knight Island but the major producers are hosted by sedimentary rocks on Latouche Island. Approximately 182.6 million lb of copper, 1.5 million oz of silver, and an unknown but substantial amount of gold were produced during a 30 year period. Currently no mines in the area are producing. Inferred, indicated and measured reserves having mineral development potential total 4.6 million tons, with weighted average grades of 1.6% copper, 0.30 oz silver/ton, and 0.04 oz gold/ton.
