THIS paper presents an experimental verification of some of the predictions made by one of us' concerning 'the influence of certain conditions of casting upon the size and position of the pipe', and the position of the segregate, in steel ingots. The predictions which we have been able to verify are the following A. That the pipe is shortened and the segregate raised 1. By slow casting; 2. By casting with the large end up instead of down; 3. By retarding the cooling of the top, e.g., by means of a sinking-head. B. That the pipe is shortened by slow cooling. C. That the pipe and segregate lie in the last freezing-part. Our procedure was to cast ingots of wax (commercially pure stearic acid) containing a little bright green copper oleate (usually 1.5 per cent.) under varying conditions; to saw each ingot open along a longitudinal plane passing through its axis ; and to examine the longitudinal section thus laid bare. In order to make the segregate or enriched part more distinct in color from the impoverished part, a very little red cerasine was added. An experiment which will be described later showed that the cerasine itself does not segregate markedly, if at all. Hence we may assume that the strong contrasts between the green and red shown in so many of our ingots are due, not to segregation of cerasine, but to that of the green oleate, in the wax which in itself is uniformly reddened with cerasine.

"The Phu Kham copper-gold operation in the Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining ten per cent held by the Laos PDR Government.The original 12 Mt/a copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. An incremental improvement program resulted in a number of circuit changes being incorporated by 2011, including conversion of conditioning tanks to flotation cells and the installation of a Jameson Cell cleaner scalper. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase throughput to 18 Mt/a. In April, 2013 the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project was commissioned to maximise performance by debottlenecking the plant IsaMill™ regrind and cleaning capacity.With the variable mineralogy of Phu Kham ore, control of the c concentrate regrind circuit is essential in terms of achieving effective liberation to maintain concentrator performance. On a routine basis laboratory regrind signature plot data is compared with daily surveys of the operational IsaMills™. More extensive surveys are also conducted to determine size distribution on a mineralogical basis and the effect of fine regrinding on pulp electrochemistry and flotation performance. This paper provides a review of the operating performance of the Phu Kham IsaMills™ with regard to power draw, feed and product size distribution, feed per cent solids, mineralogy and pulp electrochemistry. In the Coastal Plain sedimentaries of northeastern Mississippi, high-alumina clays and kaolins, which are bauxitized locally to varying degrees, are found in many places along the contact between the Midway (Paleocene) and the Wilcox (Eocene) series. The trace of the contact extends from Tippah County, on the Tennessee border, south to Winston County, thence southeast to Lauderdale County, and into Alabama. Its length within Mississippi, disregarding sinuosities, is 185 miles (fig. 1). Commercial production of bauxite from the region has amounted to about 400 tons, shipped from one outcrop in Komper County. In December 1941 and January 1942, the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey of the contact zone and selected the most promising areas for further study. In 1942, four areas in Benton, Union, and Pontotoc Counties were investigated by auger and rotary core drilling, and in 194, core drilling was done on five areas in Kemper, Noxubee, and Winston Counties. The present report records the work done by the. Bureau of Mines and the factual data obtained from the investigations of the nine areas in the two projects.

Due to the ongoing restructuring of the mining industry in central Europe with a continuous decline of the number of large underground mines and collieries, and a simultaneous decline of staff numbers in the remaining mines, the established mine rescue schemes are endangered to collapse. With the end of the mine rehabilitation at Wismut Uranium in 2014, the last remaining major mine rescue teams in Saxony, providing basic mine rescue services for all other mines in the region, will disappear. This will leave a large number of small mines and other underground operations without capable mine rescue support. Since none of these companies is able to set up a complete mines rescue unit on its own, new ways have to be found. Among others, a central mine rescue team for central Germany as well as the assistance by special trained professional fire fighters or mine rescue teams from abroad are discussed. Problems like location of the central rescue team, financing, communication and transport have to be solved. This paper provides an overview over the complexity of the problem as an example for other mining regions worldwide and will discuss national and cross-national strategies.

Construction of Flaming Gorge Dam in northeastern Utah necessitated the construction of a new state highway, Utah-260, to provide access to the dam and the town of Dutch John. A 550-foot arch structure was designed to span Cart Creek, about one mile southwest of the dam. The rock exposed at the site is highly fractured quartzitic sandstone with interbedded shale of the Precambrian Uinta Mountain Group. Eight exploratory holes were drilled, four in each abutment area, to determine rock types, the extent of fracturing at depth and rock strength. Drill cores in the west abutment revealed blocks of quartzitic sandstone loosened by the weathering and partial removal of underlying shale beds. The rock in the east abutment area was found to be highly fractured to depths of 70 feet and as far east as 50 feet from the footing locations. Selected core sections were tested for unconfined compressive strength but the values were not considered-representative of the in-situ fractured rock. To prevent movement along or, perpendicular to open fractures, four drilled-in columns were provided at the base of each footing. These extended 50, feet beyond the base of the footing, along the bearing and inclination of the thrust reaction.

Dry milling circuits that include high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) or vertical roller mills (VRM) and air classification have replaced dry ball milling in cement production, but how do they compare to wet milling and classification circuits in mineral processing plants? Two case studies are presented that compare the energy efficiency, wear, liberation and capital cost of dry and wet milling circuits. In both case studies the VRM and HPGR consume half the energy of a wet tumbling mill for the same duty. However, the dry classification system tends to significantly erode the energy benefits. A number of improvement opportunities are presented that have the potential to improve the energy and capital efficiency of dry milling circuits. These improvement opportunities focus on the dry classification system that consumes significant energy in heating and fan power requirements and requires a large proportion of the footprint.

"The number of underground work entities operating under reduced dust standards in U.S. coal mines has been increasing since the start of the decade of the 80s and is currently approaching 10,000. The concern for controlling the quartz levels in airborne respirable dust in coal mine has manifested itself in several improvements in equipment selection and operation, face ventilation practices, and dust control procedures. At the same time, fundamental studies have been initiated on determining the source-sink relationships of the airborne quartz dust. The P-7 method is the prescribed method for the determination of quartz in the respirable airborne dust samples from coal mines. Questions have been raised on the reliability of the P-7 infrared spectrometry method for quartz analysis in powders. No specific method has been defined for quartz determination in bulk samples from the mine.In a recent study on the relationship between quartz in the airborne dust and that in the materials being mined, both infrared (IR) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods were used on a suite of samples from several coal mines. These samples encompassed airborne respirable dust samples, airborne total dust samples, the oversize fraction from the respirable samplers, ROM samples, channel samples, and chip samples from the face, roof, and floor materials. In this paper, the sample preparation and analysis procedures for the samples are discussed. The data, analysis results, and comparisons of the P-7 and XRD results are presented. The quartz percent determined for the same sample by the two methods are different. In 85% of the samples analyzed, the quartz percents determined by the XRD method are higher than those obtained by the P-7 method. However, there is a strong linear relationship between the results from the two methods. Further, the XRD method indicates an average of 20 percent more quartz than that from the P-7 method. The reasons for the differences in the results and the need for additional studies are explored.Since the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, the prevalence of free silica as an occupational hazard in dusty work environments has been a matter of increasing concern. In underground coal mining, sometimes, roof, floor, clay veins and other non-coaly material must also be mined along with the coal. Mining these materials may increase the amount of quartz in the airborne dust (Pimentel and Adam, 1985; Taylor et al., 1984; Colinet et al., 1985). The problem of high quartz levels in the respirable airborne dust is widespread in continuous miner sections. In addition to the need for controlling the silica amount in mine atmosphere, a need for a sensitive, easily performed method for the determination of free silica in airborne dust samples was also recognized."

In the planning stage of a tunnel, due to limited available technology in the geological survey and the financial restriction, tunnel supports are often designed from unsatisfactory information, and the tunnel construction is started. Therefore, "observational construction" is carried out in the construction stage, in which the design is rationally verified and modified by observations/measurements. Moreover, the ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face must be predicted for efficient and safe tunnel construction. The authors have examined effective prediction methods to the ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face under construction of a mountain tunnel (Aoki et al., 2010) in view of the established method (Schubert et al., 1995). Though the prediction method of Schubert et al. requires the displacement in the direction of tunnel axis, it is difficult to obtain its accurate data by the electro-optical distance meter. Then, we have proposed a method that uses tilt sensors installed at the tunnel crown near the face to obtain the slight tilting information. To measure inclination of the tunnel crown, this inclinometer was originally developed as a daily management measurement, such that the geological condition and its possible change behind the face could be detected early, and a steady advance and construction safety could be ensured. This paper describes the method of forward prediction mechanism and advantages of this proposed method. It then presents the typical results of a field demonstration test at a tunnel under construction. Lastly, the predictable range from the stratum boundary at which ground stiffness changes are discussed based on the results of three-dimensional numerical analysis.

"INTRODUCTION DC Water’s First Street Tunnel (FST) is comprised of a collaborative effort between DC Water, DC Water’s Project Consultants Organization (PCO) led by Greeley & Hansen and McMillen Jacobs Associates and the design-build team of Skanska, Jay Dee, and Parsons Brinckerhoff. The fast-track project includes elements that were designed by the PCO and released for construction by DC Water prior to Notice to Proceed (NTP) and elements designed by the Design-Builder from 30% to released for construction after NTP. This required effective communication and technical coordination for integrated engineering and efficient construction. The project, constructed in an urban residential neighborhood, included innovative construction methods such as multiple location ground freezing, utilizing a centralized freeze plant, to minimize community impact. The means and methods chosen for cast-in-place shaft linings, precast segmental tunnel lining, microtunneling, sequential excavation method (SEM) adits and near surface elements reflected the immediate and sensitive surroundings, which varied by construction staging area (CSA). Technical aspects of the project, relative to the evolution from pre-bid to construction documents, are discussed along with modified designs to suit means and methods. SCOPE OF WORK In 2012, four major storm events swept through the District of Columbia and hit the Northeast Boundary sewer shed particularly hard with the neighborhood experiencing severe flooding. The extreme nature of the flooding, the damage to private property, and the health risks associated with exposure to sewage led to a multi-agency response and community calls for answers and action. The Mayor assembled a Task Force to evaluate a range of potential actions to address combined sewer flooding including engineering, regulatory, code revision, and management improvements. The Northeast Boundary Neighborhood Protection Project was the outcome of the Mayor’s Task Force; it is a three-step infrastructure initiative designed to offload the undersized sections of the existing collection system that serves the Northeast Boundary drainage area by implementing the McMillan Stormwater Storage Project, First Street Tunnel Project and the future Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project. Until the Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project is completed, the First Street Tunnel Project will add 8 million gallons of combined temporary sewer storage in a new tunnel under First Street NW to relieve undersized sewers that traverse the Bloomingdale neighborhood."

WAR struck the mineral industry of Washington with cross currents that produced a peculiar result. The State's production of coal, industrial minerals, and metals for 1941, valued at $28,507,282, was increased in 1942 under war pressure to approximately $35.000,000. Meanwhile a tremendous demand had arisen for men to construct airfields and many other large projects for the Army and Navy in Washington and Alaska, and Government plants for the mineral industry costing $140,000,000 or more, as well as a call for employees in the U. S. Navy Yard at Bremerton, the sixty shipyards, the four Boeing airplane factories with many auxiliary shops, and hundreds of other plants turning out war materials. In spite of an influx of nearly 300,000 people, causing an increase of 17.1 percent in the population since 1940, according to the Census Bureau, the State clearly is still engaged in an unusual amount of war production in proportion to its population. A large proportion of the workers have been drawn from the mineral industry to the war plants, whether through motives of patriotism, high wages, or, in the Boeing plants at least, the glamour of the operation

Slitting processes have been used for many years to increase the productivity of smaller diameter deformed bars, without making major investments in the rolling mill. This technology is used mainly for the production of reinforcing bars (7-20 mm diameter), but successful applications exist also for round bar production. The multi-slitting process enables to produce up to 5 bars starting from one billet, thus increasing the productivity of the smaller products. Danieli Morgårdshammar, world leader in the supply of rolling mills for long products, has been a front-runner in slitting technology since its first applications and has recently developed, first in the world, the technology to produce 5X8mm rebar. This process has been recently applied in BRSM steel, a company based in Bangladesh which is a worldwide benchmark for slitting technology performances. This paper presents the necessary modifications which need to be considered when developing a 5-strand slitting project (and multi-strand slitting projects in general), as well as the results obtained at BSRM Steel when the process was implemented in 2016, the first rolling mill in the world rolling 5X8 mm slit rebars.

The Great Salt Lake occupies about 1000 square miles whereas its predecessor, Lake Bonneville occupied 20,000 square miles and its shoreline reached 1000 feet above the present lake level. The sediments of Lake Bonneville range from peripheral gravel and sand deposits to central basin calcareous clays and silts, gypsum sands, and saline precipitates. The drilling and engineering tests conducted by the Utah State Department of Highways for many highway structure sites and the construction of Federal Interstate freeway provided engineering and hydrologic properties of Lake Bonneville sediments. Ground water and surface brine exploitation have contributed hydrologic and chemical data; the geologic and mineralogical data are scientific research contributions.

"The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012. Ion exchange (IX) as a primary production technique has been applied commercially since the 1950s; its application in the uranium industry continues to be widespread and is utilised to a lesser degree in the gold industry. The majority of ion exchange applications, outside of gold and uranium, have primarily been for secondary metal recovery and impurity removal. Newer developments in the application of ion exchange, as well as changes in regulatory requirements, are bringing about the wider use of ion exchange as a primary production technique not only for high value metals such as uranium, platinum group metals (PGM), refractory metals and rare earths, but also looking at base metals such as nickel and copper. The ability to build lower-cost, safer, less polluting processing plants with smaller footprints is driving a greater interest in IX, with the main competitors remaining solvent extraction and carbon-in-pulp/leach. In the earliest days of mining coal the obvious method was by bord and pillar working. Longwall in Britain developed from this as an expedient to overcome bottlenecks arising from ? 1) increasing depth of seams causing roof control difficulties; and 2) ventilation problems. This system became almost universal particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. Coal getting in these faces was usually by pick and shovel, filled into small waggons of up to 15 cwts capacity. These waggons ran on rails laid alongside the coal face and were often taken away from the face to the main haulage roads by horses. The roof was supported by rigid props and the wastes were normally controlled by strip packing. This system of mining was very flexible and worked well down to sections of about 3'6"

"The Williams Mine is Canada’s largest gold producer, with annual production of 450 000ounces from 2 300 000 tonnes of ore. Highly mechanized and automated underground mining practices are employed in order to achieve and maintain high levels of productivity and minimize costs.The mine ventilation system is modified to include a new vent raise and variable pitchvane-axial fan. This addition allows several fan installations underground to be decommissioned. A substantial net savings in installed horse power is achieved.Heating costs associated with under-ground ventilation air are a significant portion of mine operating costs. Air heating costs are substantially reduced by recovering heat from upcast exhaust air, minewater and compressor cooling circuits. This waste heat is used to supplement propane fired air heating systems for underground ventilation air. An additional benefit is the availability of a heat sink for summer cooling of the compressors.System design, energy savings data and payback calculations are presented."

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

Measurement while drilling (MWD) is a subsurface exploration technique associated with real-time and continuous monitoring and recording of drilling data during the drilling process. This technique can be used for underground investigations to differentiate ground strata, detect the presence of fractures and voids, and evaluate geological features and mechanical properties of geomaterial. When MWD is used for geotechnical investigations, it can improve site characterization, identify variable conditions, improve design and construction, lead to shorter project delivery times, reduce the cost and risks associated with limited subsurface data and geotechnical uncertainties, and maximum return-on-investment. Given these benefits, MWD is gaining attention among transportation agencies and the geotechnical industry. Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) innovation deployment program “Every Day Counts (EDC-5)” includes the implementation of Advanced Geotechnical Methods in Exploration (A-GaME), which aims to implement effective, underutilized subsurface exploration methods, including MWD, in U.S. practice. This paper provides an overview of the MWD technology for geotechnical site investigations and presents a case history where MWD was employed to design deep foundation for the construction of a building in Massachusetts. The advantages of this technology for risk reduction and project cost and time saving are also discussed.

The successful application of color sorting machines has established sensor-based sorting in the mineral industry in recent years and is considered today as a significant innovation in processing technology. However, we are only at the beginning of the (market) introduction. New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting pre-concentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gemstones.

The Summitville Au-Ag-Cu district in the southeastern part of the San Juan volcanic field has been a major gold producer in Colorado. Mineralization is hosted by the composite South Mountain quartz latite porphyry volcanic dome, which is believed to have been localized by the intersection of the northwest margin of the Platoro-Summitville caldera complex and the northwest-trending Platoro fracture zone. K-Ar age dates indicate that alteration and mineralization were nearly contemporaneous with emplacement of the dome at 23-20 m.y. ago, 6-7 m.y. after collapse of the Platoroo-Summitville caldera complex. The dome consists of at least four major phases including strongly altered quartz latite porphyry; a late-mineral, coarse-grained sanidine quartz latite porphyry; and postmineral quartz latite dikes. The dome was emplaced into intracaldera rhyodacite and andesite. Gold-silver-copper mineralization is concentrated near the top of the dome and is associated with pods, pipes and steeply dipping tabular zones of silicification and advanced argillic alteration. Alteration is zoned outwards from the center of mineralization through argillically and propylitically altered rocks, and is largely confined to the area of the dome. Trace element geochemical patterns for the deposit indicate a central zone of anomalous As-Au-Pb-Ag and low Mn within an exterior zone of anomalous Ag-Au-Pb-Hg and high Mn. The chief ore mineral is native gold which is associated with goethitic iron oxide in the oxide zone. In the sulfide zone, native gold is associated with copper sulfide-sulfosalt mineralization. A genetic model for the Summitville deposit is based on recent models of modern geothermal systems, with which it shows similarities in alteration, ore mineralogy, zoning, and structural patterns.
