THE South African Mining and Engineering Journal recently pointed out that no satisfactory solution of the question of compensation for silicosis can be arrived at by placing further liability of an inequitable nature upon the mines. There are at present 35 scheduled mines liable to contribute to the annual levy of $800,000 and provide for the net outstanding liability of $6,400,000. Several of these mines have, as yet, not been able to set aside sufficient funds against their out- standing liability to the Compensation Fund. The gold producers declare that the gold mining industry today is passing its zenith, and that the production of gold will decline, with a consequent lessening of the spending power of the mines, which in about ten years will be reduced to a great extent unless encouragement is given for the opening of new mines. It is during this period of decline that the mines will be required to meet the large burden already created by miners' phthisis. In England the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1925, was extended to industries involving exposure to asbestos dust.

This paper describes quality control methodologies for the production of semisolid A356 aluminum slugs with the SEED process. A methodology based on destructive tests carried out with an apparatus measuring the force to slice the slugs is presented. The force measurements were correlated with the solid phase morphologies of the slugs and were validated against a non destructive methodology that consisted in monitoring the temperature evolution of crucibles to produce the slugs and the drained metal. Results from the destructive and non destructive methodologies are compared and discussed.

MAJOR battles in the present war have been fought in American research laboratories. Without the outstanding contributions made by our scientists, engineers, and technologists in mining and metallurgy, many of our achievements in the present war would have been impossible. All recognize the fact that modern research has found the answer to problems which seemed insuperable. For the duration, many of these inventions must be maintained as war secrets. But aside from these, the record of accomplishment in peace and war, especially in the past few decades, known to all, demonstrates what scientific and industrial research can accomplish. It may be regarded as axiomatic that the development of modern industry is based principally upon research devoted to making inventions and discoveries. We have come a long way from the sixteenth century, when Agricola published his classical "De Re Metallica:" With our vastly increased knowledge we are now commercially producing dozens of metals entirely unknown at that time. Further, with our modern methods of research and development, a large number of invaluable alloy compositions have been produced. These include numerous age-hardenable alloys, cupronickels, "Everbrite", "Everdur", "Duralumin", "Elinvar", "Hastelloy", "Inconel", "Invar", "Monel", "Ni-chrome", "Ni-Hard", "Ni-Resist", "Permaloy", "Silcrome", stainless steels and irons and other alloy steels, "Stellite", and zinc die-casting alloys.

This? Bureau of Mines paper discusses the corporate structure dynamics, methods of financing, and financial assessment approaches that should be utilized to evaluate the economic health of the coal industry. It suggests rates of return and other measures of corporate economies necessary to attract capital required to finance emerging coal demand, plus impact of coal sales to total revenues. The study illuminates the activities of 30 selected coal-producing companies, including their subsidiaries or affiliates, that were responsible for approximately 60 percent of the total U.S. production in 1974. The selected firms are not all primary coal producers; many of the larger producer's are classified by the financial institutions as petroleum, metal, and steel producers, public utilities, or chemical industries. The bituminous coal industry is highly competitive as to price, service, and quality of pronuct and is subject to competition from other noncoal energy sources. The top 15 bituminous coal-producing companies mined about 46.6 per-cent of the Nation's total production in 1974, and the balance of approximately 3,885 companies were responsible for the rest of the production. Thus, the U.S. bituminous coal industry is not an oligopoly. Today, about 65 percent of the Nation's total coal production is consumed by electric power utilities and 26 percent by steel, space heating, and other industries; the balance of 9 percent is exported.

For some years past the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain has been making an intensive search for. materials that would be more efficient than rock dust and that could replace it wholly or in part as a moans of preventing the prorogation of coal-dust explosions in mines5/ In the course of this work several rock ducts and numerous inorganic compounds were tested. The results place incombustible substances in two main groups; (1) Those whose effect in suppressing the combustion of coal dust is proportional to their capacity for absorbing heat, and (2) those that shoo much higher effectiveness than would be expected from their heat capacity. The first group includes several inorganic compounds and materials commonly ground for use as rock dust, such as shale, gypsum, and limestone. Outstanding examples of the second group are compounds of the halogens6/ with the alkali metals,7/ especially potasium and sodium8/. British investigators term those salts "inhibitors" because it is assumed that their presence has a hindering or inhibiting effect on one or more of the chemical reactions that together constitute combustion. In other words, the action of an inhibitor is postulated as chemical rather than physical; theoretically, the effect is to prevent liberation of energy instead of to absorb energy already liberated.

The practice of using partly depleted oil reservoirs for gas-storage operations is proving successful. Moreover, this practice provides a method of secondary oil recovery when gas is cycled at full-storage reservoir pressure. Because of the relative newness of this operation, a study was undertaken to assist engineers in developing improved gas-injection and production procedures and in calculating the amount of gas needed for completely repressuring reservoirs. This paper is the third in a series reporting the progress of a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of reservoir performance during complete gas repressuring and gas cycling. A procedure for estimating secondary oil recovery by this method is also under study. One report (7)3/ describes the laboratory equipment. The other report (8) gives (1) data on the New York City field, Clay County, Tex., which has been converted to gas-storage operations; (2) laboratory data from research with a model oil reservoir, in which primary production, complete gas repressuring, and gas cycling for the New York City field were simulated; and (3) theory to explain reservoir performance during gas repressuring.

In its efforts to maintain production of tungsten during the recent war period, the Bureau of Mines explored certain parts of the properties of the Atolia Mining Co. in San Bernardino County, Calif., by diamond drilling. Owing to past production record and other available data, the area was considered attractive for possible development of new ore bodies. Scheelite occurs in narrow veins ranging in width from a fraction of an inch to several feet. The veins are in quartz monzonite in a zone 2 miles long and 500 feet wide. Production from the district was reported to have been over 1,000,000 units of W03. Twelve diamond-drill holes, totaling 5,056 feet, were drilled by the Bureau of Mines in the vicinity of the Papoose, Papoose No. 5, Amity, and Union mines, the tailings pond, and the "Old Spud Patch." The work began in August 1943 and was completed in June 1944. This publication briefly describes the history and deposits of the district and gives full details of the work performed by the Bureau.

The Antimony RARE II area is underlain principally by Mesozoic igneous rocks associated with the Sierra Nevada batholith. The San Andreas fault zone is near the southern boundary. Metallic mineral deposits are associated with the fault zone. These deposits were formed from magmatic solutions, and tend to be along shears and fractures within the country rock. Marble and dolomitic marble deposits occur in Paleozoic roof pendants or inclusions in the Mesozoic intrusive rocks in the area (Troxel and Morton, 1962, p. 52).

Explosives are used to mine coal. Any blast results in three size categories of products, namely over-, middle-, and under-size. Boulders can still be broken smaller in further operations after blasting. The under-size, for instance coal fines, negatively affects the mining efficiency. Their reduction ensures better returns. The paper concerns investigations aimed at reducing coal fines' generation. Inherent fractures are identified as one of source of fines. The discussion is therefore centered on establishing a relationship between the fracture occurrence, the explosive properties and the blast outputs evaluated in terms of the fines generated.

The Red Dog Operation is located in northwestern Alaska at Latitude 68°, 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The orebody was acquired by the NANA Regional Corporation, (an Alaska Native Corporation established by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971), in 1980 in their land selection. In 1982 Cominco American and the NANA Corporation signed a development agreement and Cominco Alaska Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, was formed to manage the Red Dog Project. An extensive exploration program in 1980 -1982 outlined a mineral inventory of 85 million tons, at a grade of 5.2% Pb, 17.1 % Zn, and 2.4 oz/ton Ag, which makes the Red Dog the second largest deposit ever discovered. Broken Hill, in Australia, is the only zinc orebody which was originally larger than Red Dog. The design of the facilities is to process 2.1 million tons of ore annually, which will produce 560,000 tons of zinc concentrate, 100,000 tons of lead concentrate and 50,000 tons of bulk lead/zinc concentrate.

"Casting is fundamental to manufacturing of many types of equipment and products. Although casting is a very old technology that has been in existence for hundreds of years, it remains a highly empirical technology, and production of new castings requires an expensive and time-consuming trial-and-error approach.In recent years, mathematical modeling of casting has received increasing attention; however, a majority of the modeling work has been in the area of heat transfer and solidification. Very little work has been done in modeling fluid flow of the liquid melt. This paper presents a model of fluid flow coupled with heat transfer of a liquid melt for casting processes. The model to be described in this paper is an extension of the COMMIX code and is capable of handling castings with any shape, size, and material. A feature of this model is the ability to track the liquid/gas interface and liquid/solid interface. The flow of liquid melt through the sprue and runners and into the mold cavity is calculated as well as three-dimensional temperature and velocity distributions of the liquid melt throughout the casting process.IntroductionBower et al. (1), in their 1969 review of the evolution of some of the casting techniques, stated that:""The evolution of technology requires alternatives to be available so that choices can be made that lead to changes. The role of solidification science and other disciplines related to casting technology is to develop a better understanding of process and product, so that a wider range of alternatives is possible.Alternatives, whether from science or from invention, must lead to improvements in casting ""utility."" Utility, or economic advantage, must include consideration of total system costs, and final product value. The cost of materials, melt processing and finishing should be optimized with casting costs, since all are part of the production system. It is the favorable relationship between total processing costs and product value that makes a change in casting technology viable, but the best change is not possible unless technology has provided an understanding."""

Using Unity 3D as a collaborative multi-user virtual on-line environment, an interactive virtual underground mine platform (IVUMP) is being developed to provide on-line access to mine safety preparedness training with a focus on mine emergency response exercises (MEREs). Communication and information flow among MERE participants and their actions can be monitored, recorded and evaluated. A mine ventilation simulation utility VFIRE is being incorporated to enhance the realism and interactive nature of the ?in-world? exercises as well as extend its functionality to include training in real-time ventilation and fire control.

Measuring diesel particulate matter (DPM) for underground metal/nonmetal mine compliance samples is done by collecting DPM onto quartz fiber filters and analyzing the samples via NIOSH method 5040 for elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC). As part of the sampling train, two quartz fiber filters in tandem are housed inside an SKC DPM cassette that includes an impactor. The impactor segregates DPM and mine dust, and the second filter is used to correct for adsorption of vapor phase organic carbon (OC). Since the value of the second filter is subtracted from the first, the pre-existing carbon on the filter media for both filters needs to be comparable. In addition, the pre-existing carbon on the media should be low for accurate and sensitive results. However, there have been some reports of elevated OC on the filter media of the SKC DPM cassettes, which would cause the limit of detection (LOD) to be higher than reported at times. In this study, blank SKC DPM cassettes from different batches and with different expiration dates were analyzed to quantify the amount of carbon on the filter media and to determine the LOD and limit of quantification (LOQ) associated with these samplers. It was found that the organic carbon and total carbon on the media was about five times higher than quartz media used in samplers from other studies. The average TC on the blanks was 2.57 μg/cm2 with a standard deviation of 0.70, resulting in a LOD of 21 μg/m3 TC, 8-hr Time Weighted Average (TWA), and LOQ of 69 μg/m3 TC, 8-hr TWA, when using these samplers for collecting DPM. The LOD and LOQ may be improved through some sample preparation techniques. INTRODUCTION Exposure to diesel exhaust (DE) is associated with an increased risk for lung cancer and other adverse health effects (Attfield et al. 2012, Silverman et al. 2012, Ping and Guang 2017, IARC 2012). Pronk et al. 2009 reported that the highest exposed groups to elemental carbon (EC) from DE worked in underground sites in mining and construction and they were exposed to concentrations between 27–658 μg/m3. At concentrations (1–25 μg/m3 EC) well below those observed in mining, diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposures were estimated to increase the risk of cancer by levels exceeding those typically acceptable for occupational risk in the United States and Europe (Vermeulen et al. 2014). This suggests that underground miners are especially at risk because of their more substantial exposures in confined working spaces. As a protective measure, in 2001, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule to limit exposures of metal/nonmetal underground miners to DPM to an 8-hr time-weighted average (TWA) of 160 μg/m3 total carbon (TC) (MSHA 2001, 2006).

A contained nuclear explosion is proposed to produce a chimney of broken ore well below the water table. After the chimney is filled with water and reaches hydrostatic equilibrium, oxygen, under pressure, is introduced near the bottom of the mass of broken rock. The increase in solubility of oxygen at high hydrostatic pressure is sufficient to initiate the oxidation of the primary sulfides: chalcopyrite and pyrite. The oxidation and dissolution of these sulfides produces enough heat to increase the temperature of the ore and water in the chimney as much as 1000 to 150°C. The rate of dissolution of chalcopyrite becomes so rapid under these conditions that the rate of recovery is no longer limited by the rate of chalcopyrite dissolution, but by the degree of exposure and other factors. Means of solution control and distribution of oxygen in the chimney have been examined in some detail. A calculational model utilizing experimentally determined solubility rates is utilized to estimate the temperature rise in the chimney and the rate of copper recovery as a function of initial temperature, sulfide content of ore, size of sulfide particles, and fraction of sulfide exposed to solution.

DURING the second year of America's active participation in the war the main objectives of the petroleum refining industry were again to provide the four most important product needs for war: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for TNT production, high-quality lubricating oils for the needs of aviation and the armed forces, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture. All other materials supplied by the petroleum industry took an inferior priority ranking, depending on the degree of essentiality. To accomplish the above objectives the industry initiated and carried on a building program during 1942 and 1943 which will put those two years down in petroleum refining history as the greatest construction years of all time, a record which will hold for decades to come. Led by an estimated total of $900,000,000 going into 100octane and contributory plant investment, it is easy to picture a total of two billion dollars and more going into additional refining-industry plant investment during 1942 and 1943, most of it privately paid for, but a substantial part covered by R.F.C. Government money financing.

The exploiting of geothermal steam is a new endeavor in this country and is for that matter a very new science in the world. With the majority of steam wells in the world having been drilled during the last twelve years relatively little experience and knowledge has been gained that can guide us as compared to the techniques the oil and gas producers have developed for their use. We few technical personnel associated with the field find it a continuous challenge to understand and explain what effects or causes the various unusual phenomenon experienced. We have had unending discussions attempting to formulate pet theories which we can use as guides. We know, so the geologists tell us, that the source of the heat is from the hot magmatic core of the earth. Theory has it that the magma is cooling off and that hot gases are given off as this magma cools and shrinks. In volcanic' areas along fault lines where the magma reaches closer to the surface than in other areas, there is a higher concentration of gas evolution; consequently, geyser or geothermal areas are developed. As these hot gases rise toward the surface they encounter various minerals, including overlying bodies of water. It is into these underground lakes that our wells are penetrating. As the heat enters these lakes it spreads out by conduction, convection and water migration. We can strike this hot water over quite large areas in many of the geothermal fields. At present there is one anomaly to this in the United States as there is in Italy where our wells do not penetrate a hot water lake. This is at The Big Geysers in California. Here superheated steam is produced with a heat content, so high that it could not have been boiled off of a fresh water pool. This puzzled us until last year when a well was completed into a large body of brine in the Imperial Valley. This brine exists at close to 500°F and at a hydrostatic pressure sufficient to preclude any boiling. It is now believed by some of us that a similar pool of brine must exist below The Big Geysers area, from which the steam is emanating. If there is such a brine pool, it offers a plausible explanation of the high-heat content, for brine boils at a higher temperature than fresh water. I am now beginning to think that a similar brine pool may exist under all the geothermal basins for if it is under two of them, it is highly probable that it is under the others. The partial understanding of what we are drilling toward, and formulating a theory to explain its behavior helps guide us in our steam well drilling.

It has long been known that in melting high-chromium steels, some of the carbon might be oxidized out of the melt without excessive simultaneous oxidation of chromium, and that higher temperatures favor retention of chromium. The advent of oxygen injection as a tool for rapid decarburization of a steel bath permits significantly higher bath temperatures, and it was quickly recognized that the use of oxygen injection facilitated the oxidation of carbon to low levels in the presence of relatively high residual chromium contents. Up to the present time, however, specific data pertaining to the chro-mium-carbon-temperature relations in chromium steel refining have not been available. Individual steelmakers have evolved practices more or less empirically, but there has been very little real basis for predicting how effective any given practice can be in permitting maximum oxidation of carbon with minimum loss of chromium. The current investigation, therefore, was undertaken in an effort to establish the fundamental carbon-chromium relationship in molten iron under oxidizing conditions. As reported below, the equilibrium constant and the influence of temperature on that constant have been derived for the iron-chromium-carbon-oxygen reaction in the range of chromium steel compositions with what appears to be a fair degree of precision. The practical application of the result will be obvious. Experimental Procedure The laboratory investigation was carried out on chromium steel heats melted in a magnesia crucible in a 100-lb capacity induction furnace at the Union Carbide and Carbon Re- search Laboratories. The charges for the heats consisted of Armco iron, low-carbon chromium metal, and high-carbon chromium metal, the relative proportions of which were calculated so that the various heats would contain from approximately 0.06 pct carbon and 8 pct chromium to 0.40 pct carbon and 30 pct chromium at melt-down. When the charges were melted, the bath temperatures were raised to the desired level, and the heats were then decarburized by successive injections of oxygen at the slag-metal interface through a ½-in. diam silica tube at a pressure of 30 psi. The duration of the oxygen injections was from 30 sec to 2 min. at intervals of approximately 5 to 30 min. It did not appear that length or frequency of the injection periods had any significant effect on the results; cansequently, no effort was made to hold them constant and they were controlled only as was expedient to the general working of the heats. Between successive injections, the heats were sampled by means of a copper suction-tube sampler that yields a sound, rapidly-solidified sample representative of the composition of the molten metal at the temperature of sampling. This sampling device is a modification of the one described by Taylor and Chipman.1 An attempt was made to vary bath temperatures between samples, but it quickly became evident that, unless the variations were small or unless the new temperature was maintained for a minimum of 15 min. during which an injection of oxygen was made in order to accelerate the reactions, a very wide departure from equilibrium resulted. For most of the runs, therefore, temperature was maintained relatively constant at approximately 1750 or 1820°C. A few reliable observations at other temperatures, however, were obtained. Temperature Measurement The high temperatures involved in this investigation were measured by the radiation method, utilizing a Ray-O-Tube focused on the closed end of a refractory tube immersed in the metal bath. The immersion tubes employed were high-purity alumina tubes specially prepared by the Tona-wanda Laboratory of The Linde Air Products Co. These tubes were quite sturdy under reasonable mechanical stress at high temperature. They were unusually resistant to thermal shock, and chemical attack on them by the melts was slow. With care, it was found possible to keep these tubes continuously immersed in a heat for as long as 5 hr at temperatures up to 1850°C, before failure by fluxing occurred. The Ray-O-Tube—alumina tube assemblage was similar to those supplied commercially for lower temperature applications. In operation, the alumina tube was slowly immersed in the molten metal to a depth of approximately 5 in., and the device was then clamped solidly to a supporting jig where it remained for the duration of the run. A photograph of the equipment, in operation with Ray-O-Tube in place and oxygen injection in progress, is shown in Fig 1. When in position in a heat, the instrument was calibrated by means of an immersion thermocouple and an optical pyrometer. For calibration through the range of temperatures from 1500 to 1650°C, a platinum -platinum + 10 pct rhodium thermocouple in a silica tube was immersed alongside the alumina tube. Recovery of fine pentlandite is proving to be a challenging task in the Kevitsa sequential flotation operations, with over 60% of the nickel losses reporting into the -25μm size fraction. Since commissioning, the Kevitsa process has undergone major changes to address throughput and flotation performance. Major changes were implemented in the configuration of the milling and flotation circuits as well as in the operating conditions and reagent regime. Some of these changes improved nickel flotation while others deteriorated flotation performance. Most of the changes have had a direct impact on nickel flotation. This paper reviews the systematic analysis, laboratory testing and salient changes done to the process with special focus on the impact on the fine pentlandite flotation. The presence of discontinuities strongly affects the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of rock masses. Joint geometry networks play a vital role in civil, mining, and petroleum engineering projects associated with jointed rock. The need for a realistic representation of joint geometry in rock masses has been recognized. The first part of the paper shows how to build three-dimensional stochastic joint network schemes and also shows how to perform validation studies for these schemes using joint data from the Stripa mine, Sweden. Due to the existence of complex joint patterns, mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses usually exhibit scale effects and an-isotropic properties. A correct understanding of the mechanical properties (strength and deformability) of jointed rock masses is important for designing and performance estimation of structures build in and on rock masses. Beyond a certain volume, the mass proper-ties of the rock may remain essentially constant with respect to the effect of joints. This minimum volume may be used as the element size to represent the equivalent properties of a statistically homogeneous rock mass volume which contains a significant number of joints. This volume may be termed as a "Representative Elementary Volume" (REV) and may be of great importance for engineering purposes. Investigations are underway at both the 2D and 3D levels to look into the possibility of establishing relationships between REV mechanical properties and joint geometry parameters. Recently developed joint geometry modeling schemes are linked with existing distinct element codes (both 2D and 3D) to create a stochastic/deterministic stress analysis approach in achieving the goal. Results obtained so far in this direction are presented in the second part of the paper.

This paper identifies the strategic gaps and opportunities for the South African mining industry’s contribution towards advancing sustainable development. Mineral resources companies are confronted by a range of complex social performance challenges, which largely manifest in sporadic community and labour unrest, undermining the sustainability and profitability of these companies. Integrating supply chain management, strategic long-term planning and sustainability planning is identified as a strategic gap that can contribute towards the sustainability of mining companies, if effectively implemented. Contributing towards sustainable development by the South African mining industry is not merely a voluntary requirement on the industry but a legal requirement in terms of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002. This Act is legislation aimed at advancing socioeconomic development in communities that host mining operations and in areas that provide labour to the South African mining industry. In contributing towards the advancement of sustainable development in mining host communities, not only will mining companies fulfil a legal requirement in terms of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act, but they will also prevent negative social and economic impacts in those communities. This paper identifies innovative and cost-effective ways of advancing sustainable development by integrating strategic supply chain management, strategic long-term planning, and sustainability planning.
