The Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming and southcentral Montana contains the largest strip minable reserve of compliance coal (0.27 kg or 0.6 or less Ibs of sulfur per million Btu) in the United States. In mining parlance, it is the mother lode. Wyoming's portion of the Basin is called the Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB). It has been the nation's top coal producer for the past nine years. And based on 1997 production statistics and estimated strippable compliance coal reserves, Wyoming should remain the nation's top producer for the next 51 plus years. In August 1994, ME featured 10 articles that covered all aspects of coal production in the SPRB. In this issue, five authors update the 1994 articles and provide a pre- diction of what the Basin will look like at the turn of the century. Filtration of liquid aluminium is widely used in the industry for the removal of inclusions, and Ceramic Foam Filters (CFFs) are often the filtration media of choice. It is known that PH3 (phosphine) can be released from used phosphate bonded CFFs when in contact with water. Additionally, there is a need of an improved understanding of the thermal stability and the chemical reactivity of these types of filters, as there is limited information available in the public domain. In the present preliminary study, three CFFs, i.e. Substrate 1–3, with varying AlPO4 (aluminium phosphate) content were studied under controlled conditions. Samples of the substrates, as produced and in contact with 5N pure aluminium, were heat-treated in a vacuum induction furnace at 850 °C and 1300 °C, as well as thermally studied at 850 °C using a Differential Scanning Colorimeter connected to a Thermogravimetric Analyser (DSC-TG). All tests were performed under an inert atmosphere of argon (Ar). Mass changes of ∼0.001 % were registered for the pure substrates, and 0.003-0.10 % when in contact with aluminium. In the latter case, diffusion of P (phosphorous) from the bulk of the substrate to the interface was established to have taken place. A colour change, from white to orange/brown, was also observed at the interface, which is a clear sign that a chemical reaction has taken place. As a result, the thermal stability of the substrates can be questioned under present conditions.

One of the most effective methods of metal surface heat treatment is through laser hardening. In most cases, laser parameters are determined experimentally, which is expensive and time-consuming. A mathematical model for the surface heat treatment process will allow a significant decrease in costs, and reduce the time required for optimization. In the present work, the authors present a mathematical model for laser heat treatment with forced cooling which can be applied to medium carbon steel. The model is based on a three-dimensional heat transfer equation using Green?s function. The model allows one to calculate the temperature of the treated steel at different depths below the surface with and without cooling, for set values of the laser power and travelling speed, when the heat transfer coefficient is a known constant. It also takes variations in the radiation adsorption coefficient on the metal surface and laser beam spot size into account. The model was illustrated by comparing calculated and experimental temperature profiles of mild carbon steel with 0.5% C with and without cooling. A reasonably good agreement was achieved between experimental and predicted values to ensure that a high enough austenizing temperature with short enough cooling time was reached for direct martensite formation. It also predicted the depth of treatment accurately. The incorporation of cooling in the model substantially improves previous models based on heat transfer only. It delivers a tool that can with a reasonable accuracy predict the depth of surface heat treatment and cooling time required from operational parameters, such as laser power, speed of motion, and distance between laser and cooling source, that can be controlled in the work set-up. 1. Reserves are estimated in the Nemo, Sewanee, Wilder, and White Oak beds of Fentress County, Tenn. The Wilder is the only bed being mined commercially and contains the largest known reserves. Eleven lesser known beds are present in the county, but not enough information on them was available for estimating the reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 102 million tons as of January 1, 1955. This total includes 66 million tons in beds 28 inches and more thick.

Gipronickel Institute, JS has developed a new process and equipment for melting copper raw material in a two-zone Vaniukov furnace resulting in the production of white matte and low-grade slag in terms of copper content. Tests on processing copper nickelcontaining ore from Norilsk (Cu - 17 %), Ni - 3 %) were conducted in Vaniukov pilot furnace (total area 11.4m2) of Severonickel Combine. The amount of the processed material was about 11 thousand tons. Principal results of pilot testing are presented.

Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

The Bureau of Mines devoted portions of the 1987-1988 field seasons to investigate the mineral aggregate industry in Juneau, Skagway, Haines, and Gustavus, Alaska, as part of the Juneau Mining District study. Statistics compiled for current suppliers include location, activity, reserve estimates, expected mine life, and types of commodities available. Each population center, except for Gustavus, is well endowed with suitable mineral aggregate to last at least 20 years. The Bureau of Mines quantified the mineral aggregate resource in many large potential sites within each area. Sampling, engineering and soil-index testing, site descriptions, deposit dimensions, and gold recovery information is described. Refraction seismic studies performed at three localities revealed gravel thicknesses in excess of 40 to 80 feet. In the Juneau area the Herbert/Eagle Rivers outwash area, East Fork Lace River. Antler/Gilkey Rivers, and Grizzly Bar (Taku Inlet) individually contain in excess of 60 million yd3 of excellent-quality aggregate with minor accessory gold credits. Haines is also well endowed with aggregate resources; large, quality deposits occur along and at the confluences of the Chilkat, Katzehin, Klehini, Tsirku, and Kicking Horse Rivers. Large deposits of granitic aggregate exist in the Skagway River and East Fork Skagway River.

"The clearing of tuyeres on copper and nickel converters or similar metallurgical, vessels has, for many years, been done using mainly a manually- operated ""puncher"". One such device is the ""Gaspe Puncher"" developed in 1962 at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter. In an attempt to remove the operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor.The automated puncher is controlled by a Texas Instruments Model 530C Programmable Controller (PLC). Position measurement and control is done using non-contact position measuring equipment from the Tele-Controls Division of Geodimeter Inc. The entire automation system was installed on an existing Gaspe Puncher with minimum disruption to the operation of the smelting process. The operator's panel allows the user to ""block out"" any individual tuyere, and to select any of a variety of operating modes.The development of the automated puncher is described, and the results of several months operation are given.IntroductionThe tuyeres of copper and nickel converters and similar metallurgical vessels become blocked with solidified material formed by the cooling action of the blowing air. This restricts the converting operation. Clearing these blocked tuyeres has for many years been done mainly using a manually-operated ""puncher"" which uses a hydraulic or pneumatically-operated piston to drive a steel bar into the tuyere. The Gaspe Puncher, developed at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter in 1962 is one such device. It is currently being built and sold by Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited, under license to Noranda. There are over 200 units in operation world-wide.In an attempt to remove the Puncher operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, and to increase productivity, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor. This paper describes the development of the automated Gaspe Puncher, its installation at the Horne Smelter, and the results of its operation after several months."

The North Auckland Line (NAL) in Northland, New Zealand, is being upgraded to pass Hi-Cube containers. The line includes many tunnels and bridges which need to be refurbished to improve structural clearances and line capacity. Tunnel 2 along the line, the Makarau Tunnel, has posed special challenges. Opened in 1898, the tunnel suffered multiple collapses during construction and has shown significant distortion during operation. The tunnel has been repaired many times since opening. Successfully enlarging this delicate and distressed structure has involved historical research, advanced analysis and design, and careful construction. The results provide lessons for dealing with brick lined tunnels and poor ground conditions

SacRamento Hill is a mass of granite porphyry intruded along a fault between Paleozoic sediments and pre-Cambrian schists in the Bisbee district, Cochise County, Arizona. The intrusion invaded both walls of the fault to a large extent, and the accompanying extensive mineralization of the Paleozoic limestones is the locus of the great high-grade copper orebodies of the Bisbee mines. Prior to 1909, although the presence of ore in the masa of the hill itself had long been suspected, systematic exploration had not been attempted. A few shallow pits on the surface here and there had disclosed some chal-cocite with associated carbonates as stringers in a mass of strongly brccciated, silicified, and iron-stained porphyry. The workings in the surrounding limestones had penetrated the porphyry in a dozen or SO places for some distance from the contact but had disclosed no ore. However, the rock had been largely altered to quartz and sericite and very thoroughly impregnated with pyrite and traces of the copper sulphides. A close geological study of the conditions, both surface and underground, strengthened these suspicions, and plans for prospecting the hill were made in 1909. Reference to the accompanying illustrations, Figs. 1 and 2, will give an idea of the general appearance of the surface. The mineralization is more intense in two main zones, one at the west end and the other at the east end of the hill. The outcrop of the hill is elliptical and approximately 3,000 ft. long by 1,400 ft. wide. The Sacramento shaft, which is the main hoisting shaft of the mine and situated at the east end of the hill, as shown by the accompanying map (Fig. 3), offered a convenient base for prospecting that end of the hill, while the workings from the Holbrook shaft offered a similar opportunity at the west end. The choice of level for the first work was determined by analogy with the most favorable depth for enrichment below surface obscrved in the other disseminated deposits of the Southwest.

Investigations of the sinkhole indicated that the loose, disturbed ground was completely encircled by dense competent core. This confinement substantially increased the effectiveness of the compaction grouting compared to what might have been expected at a "greenfield" site. However, the 8 ft diameter circle shown in the plan view was only the surface expression of the sinkhole proper and the deep, loosened ground actually extended to a larger diameter of about 20 ft. The planned spacing of the grout holes was based on the finite element simulations using a target void ratio of less than 0.3 throughout the compacted ground within a 5 ft radius of the grout injection point. Because of the strong confinement effect, the layout of grout holes included one central primary hole surrounded by six secondary holes at a triangular spacing of about 5 ft. Since the disturbed ground was considered a confined cylinder, it was anticipated that the primary hole would perform the majority of work and the secondary holes would act as check holes, with progressively lesser grout takes as the loose ground densified.

Dawsonite bearing oil shale of Colorado&apos;s Green River Formation offers a unique and vast (6.5 billion tons of Al2O3) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions dawsonite and its oil shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary Federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

The purpose of this paper is to inform members of the coal producing and consuming community about techniques used by The Carter Mining Company to control product quality at a large surface coal mining operation. During the early years of mining operations, coal quality received adequate attention but the Company&apos;s main emphasis was to build up its production rate and minimize mining costs. While these goals are still of prime importance, coal quality has received substantial attention in recent years. A Company guideline that no coal shipment shall exceed any contract or company-imposed coal quality specification has been successfully implemented. To implement this guideline, geology and coal quality modeling procedures were improved, in-pit drilling and blending programs were refined, and detailed shipment procedures were developed. Background Surface coal mining of subbituminous C rank coal in the Cillette. (Campbell County) Wyoming area has become increasingly competitive during recent years. Prior to 1974, one small surface mine produced coal for local consumption. During the last ten years, 13 new surface coal mines have been constructed. Coal production from Campbell County, Wyoming totalled 88 million short tons (79.8 million metric tons) in 1983, the majority being shipped to electric utilities in the central and southern United States via unit trains having a capacity of 10,000 short tons (9,072 metric tons).

The well-established on-line particle size analyzer OPUS manufactured by Sympatec GmbH, has been successfully implemented in several mining and industrial minerals project. OPUS monitors the particle size distribution in 31 fractions as well as the solid concentration in opaque and highly concentrated ore and mineral slurries on-line in real time e.g. behind mills or cyclones applying 31 ultrasonic frequencies for highest resolution. Ultrasonic extinction overcomes all limitations known from optical and mechanical systems like contamination, blockage and wear. OPUS measures slurries in their original state without any dilution, hence no extensive sampling procedure or sample conditioning is required thus no dilution errors occur. Due to the OPUS design and suitable algorithms entrained air bubbles do not affect the quality of analysis at all. The sensor covers particle size distributions from 0,01 to 3.000,00 µm and solid concentrations up to 70 % by volume and can be easily adapted to a number of production lines simultaneously. Jiangxi Copper?s Dexing Mine is one of the biggest copper mines in Asia and among the first users for OPUS on-line particle size and concentration analysis in mining industry. OPUS is connected to 2 process lines. Jiangxi Copper has implemented OPUS for into their central control system for the grinding & classifying circuit of one SAG mill and one ball mill. Ore-dressing tests were conducted on a sample of ore submitted by the Richmond Hill Mining Co. of Lead, S. Dak. as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for investigating potential domestic sources of manganese. Half of the sample was taken from the 300-foot level and half from surface cuts. The problems involved were liberation and rejection of silica and iron and removal of lead, Silver, and gold from the manganese concentrates. Although a portion of the silica and iron oxides was too intimately associated with manganese minerals for rejection by ore-dressing methods, thus limiting recovery of high-grade concentrates, the Richmond Hill ore was found amenable to simple gravity methods of concentration for producing intermediate-grade products. By jigging and tabling, 73.8 percent of the total manganese was recovered in a product that, when sintered, assayed plus 40 percent Mn. Lead, silver, and gold were successfully removed from gravity concentrates by a chloridizing roasting treatment.

The revitalization of Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District has led to the redevelopment of existing properties and the development of new properties. At one time, the Strip was home to wholesale market products. Now, the historical warehouse buildings are being converted to multi-use residential and commercial properties. One such property, 1600 Smallman Street, consisted of 1 to 6-story connected buildings that housed night clubs, retail shops, and office space. The lower story portion of the building, on the southwest side of the property, was torn down to make room for a new 5-story- parking garage with street level retail space. The remaining 6-story-building, on the northeast, was gutted to be renovated into high-end condominiums, keeping the exterior historical building facade.

A series of studies of emissions from large coal-fired steam generators have included measurements of the concentrations of oxides of sulfur and oxides of notrogen. The sampling equipment, method of sampling, and analytical techniques used for processing of these samples are detailed. A method based on the precipitation of benzidine sulfate was developed for determining both SO3 and total oxides of sulfur in the presence of interfering acidic components in the stack gases. In addition, difficulties encountered with sampling and analytical techniques are also described.
