"Bessemer matte iron content is a critical process parameter that needs to be closely monitored and controlled in order to achieve optimal Ni/Cu smelter returns. Current process control practices during Ni/Cu converting often rely on visual observations and typically involve matte sampling to confirm that target composition was reached. A high-level techno-economic analysis study was carried out to evaluate potential direct benefits of advanced process control during the final stages of Ni/Cu matte converting. The results indicate that the magnitude of direct benefits will largely depend on matte iron control practices already implemented as well as matte iron set point. Preliminary assessment suggests that under the assumptions used in this study, implementation of advanced process control can potentially result in additional revenues ranging from several hundreds of thousands to tens of millions of US dollars per year per converter producing about 200 tonnes of Bessemer matte per day based on Ni, Cu, and Co metal recoveries alone.INTRODUCTION Real-time measurement of molten metal elemental composition, arguably, remains one of the key unresolved issues impeding full automation and real-time optimization of pyrometallurgical operations in different industrial areas, including non-ferrous metals and ferro-alloys. In particular, current process control practices during Ni/Cu matte converting often rely on visual observations and typically involve matte sampling in order to confirm target matte composition. In addition to being time consuming, this approach relies heavily on operator experience and diligence, and, therefore, requires continuous performance and quality control efforts. For instance, the need to improve quality of the Bessemer matte (BM) at the Copper Cliff smelter has prompted an impressive staff engagement and training campaign that was carried out by Vale’s team in the late 2000’s (Zanini, Wong, & Cooke, 2012). This training exercise was executed to address the compounded effect of several operational challenges, namely demand for higher throughputs, changes in the feed concentrate composition, increased feed variability, loss of process knowledge and expertise due to retirement, as well as lack of a comprehensive approach to improving the overall performance of the flowsheet rather than meeting production targets for intermediate products. Although the campaign was very successful and has resulted in significant improvements in the Bessemer matte quality, it has also highlighted the need to move away from “the-art-of-converting” and develop analytical tools that would enable real-time process monitoring."

Efficient performance of EPB TBMs in clayey ground is primarily dominated by the flow capability of the excavated muck in the cutterhead and screw conveyor. Currently, Consistency Index approach is used to evaluate clay clogging potential, but it does not include the effects of surcharge pressure on clay behavior. In this paper, a macro-scale soil rheometer is introduced to assess the clogging potential under various water content and surcharge loading conditions. The results show that, in addition to water content, surcharge pressure has clear impact on clay clogging too. In practice, Consistency Index chart can be refined to incorporate the impact of face pressure to better simulate the EPB tunneling conditions.

Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company is currently mining in four pit areas; Live Oak, Red Hill, Thornton and Joe Bush Extension, near Globe, Arizona. Small satellite orebodies lying outside the main pits have been mined out in a series of small open pits. Major slope instability has affected production in every pit. Some consequences of the instability have been; (1) Serious interruption of mining plans, which resulted in deferred ore production, lost ore, reduced mining rates and increased stripping requirements. (2) Forced replacement of crushing facilities. (3) Serious effects on other production facilities. The introduction of a slope stability monitoring and control function as an integral part of mine planning has been successful in reducing the impact of these failures and will eventually result in economic pit design based on probabilistic slope analysis. This case history presents a brief review of the problems associated with slope instability at Inspiration's mines followed by a more detailed report on one specific failure area in the Thornton pit where the use of horizontal drain holes for slope stabilization appears to be successful. Relationships between slope movement rate, rainfall, and mining activity are shown.

In 2007 Copper Mountain Mining determined that there were sufficient resources to consider reopening the Similco Mine near Princeton, BC. The mill facility that had been built by Newmont Mining in 1972 was closed in 1996 and all of the process equipment removed. The mill had been built on the west side of the Similkameen River to facilitate mining of the Ingerbelle Deposit. In 1980 construction was completed on a primary crusher and cable belt to deliver ore across the Similkameen River from the Copper Mountain deposit to the Ingerbelle mill. With the decision to restart mining of the Copper Mountain deposit, the decision was made to design and build a 35,000 tpd grinding and flotation mill near the mining operations. This paper discusses the application of historical operating data for the selection of the mills for the new grinding circuit and provides an overview of the grinding circuit design.

Discussions on reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction (RPEEE) include the CRIRSCO 2019 reporting template, JORC 2012, SAMREC 2016, CIM 2019 Guideline, and Regulation SK-1300. These reporting codes all conform to the principles of reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. To demonstrate that all mineral resources align with the RPEEE principles, the Competent Person is responsible for endorsing the mineral resource estimate. Moreover, establishing mineral resources and RPEEE requires technical input from numerous technical specialists, such as mining and geotechnical engineers, metallurgical engineers, social and environmental specialists, financial and governmental practitioners, and more. The aim is to improve the transparency of the disclosure of mineral resources and guarantee the investor or potential investor that the reporting of mineral resources is based on reliable technical, economic, environmental, social, and other relevant factors. This paper discusses the important protocols and definitions in some international reporting codes for the purposes of developing a guide memoire that will assist the Competent Person to interpret, establish and apply RPEEE appropriately and easily.

"Several studies have been carried out to determine how the optimum atmosphere conditions in the heat treatment of metals can be established for a given product by using different gas injectors and varying atmosphere flow rate and composition. The most common approach taken to gain insight into furnace atmospheres has been to use commercial computational fluid dynamics codes and examples of their use are shown. However, the complexity of these codes, the difficulty in establishing boundary conditions, their cost and computational demands limit their usability in solving day-to-day production problems.A simplified, web-based model of a furnace atmosphere is described where the conservation equations are solved to determine the composition profiles of the atmosphere in the furnace. Although the model is restricted in scope to certain types of furnace, it is shown to give better results than CFD when boundary conditions are uncertain. The application of the model to the understanding of existing furnace conditions and to determining ways of optimising the use of gases are discussed. IntroductionThe important role of protective atmospheres during heat treatment of metals, furnace brazing of assemblies and soldering of printed circuit boards is well established. The atmosphere in the furnace prevents air ingress and oxidation of the parts, helps flush away any flux or binder from braze and solder pastes and provides an important mode of heat transfer [1]. In a batch furnace having typically one or two gas injectors, the gas utilisation and process can be optimised by minimising air leaks and mantaining atmosphere homogeneity with fans or other atmosphere circulation techniques. In a continuous furnace, however, atmosphere optimisation is more difficult as furnace inlets and exits can also let in air. The atmosphere requirements of different stages of heat treatment, brazing or soldering vary [2]. Achieving these atmospheres in different sections of the open-ended furnace is a relatively complex task. Methods such as atmosphere zoning and the use of physical curtains and gas injectors have evolved with time, though it is hard to predict how effective these techniques will be for a given furnace and process. Experts in the field tend to rely on experience and rules-of-thumb rather than scientific method to achieve the required results."

In this study, the oxidation of low-grade pyrolusite to potassium manganate in alkaline solutions under O2 pressure has been investigated. The effects of different conditions on the high-grade and low-grade pyrolusite leaching process were investigated based on thermodynamic calculation, as well as the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the low-grade pyrolusite during the leaching process. The results showed that the manganese conversion rates of the two types of pyrolusite were almost the same, and reaching 99% for high-grade pyrolusite and 96% for low-grade pyrolusite under optimal conditions. The optimum condition for low-grade pyrolusite sample JM-2 was achieved as 0.5 MPa of the oxygen partial pressure, 55% of KOH, 14 of the initial alkali-manganese ratio, and ≤ 48 μm of the mineral granularity at 260 °C within 150 min of leaching time and 500 rpm. In alkaline leaching of low-grade pyrolusite, Mn(IV) was oxidized into Mn(VI). The particles changed from large particles to flakes and finally formed crystals. Finally, the shrinking core model was used to fully describe the leaching kinetics of the manganese. It was demonstrated that the leaching of manganese was controlled by the chemical surface reactions and the activation energy which equals 115.9121 kJ/mol.

Silver (Ag) filler is the most attractive choice among all the conductive fillers of die attach materials for the attachment of silicon devices because of its balanced properties and relatively low cost. However, a major problem of silver is that it electrochemically migrates in the presence of moisture and applied bias. In microelectronic devices, silver migration can occur between adjacent conductors/electrodes, which leads to the formation of dendrites and eventually results in short-circuit failure. In order to assess the reliability of these conductive fillers, an investigation for two types of Agfilled die attach materials was done using the water drop test at room temperature and using a 1000 hour temperature-humidity-bias (THB) test under 85 ºC and 85% RH conditions. Four different bias/voltages and six different electrode distance spacing were used. Both dendrite and cloud/lace-like growths were observed as a result of the electrochemical migration of silver, Water drop test results revealed that increasing the applied bias/voltage and decreasing electrode spacing causes migration to occur faster, thus resulting into shorter time to fail (TTF). It was also observed that the growth rate of the dendrites from the cathode increased linearly as the dendrite approached the anode, probably due to a combination of increased ion availability and electric field. A minimum applied bias of 3 volts was required for migration to occur in Epoxy A as compared to 2 volts for Epoxy C. The higher migration voltage requirement for Epoxy A was attributed to the higher volume resistivity of the said epoxy. In addition to the minimum voltage requirement, it was observed that a minimum electric field of about 1 volt/mm is required for migration to occur. The 1000 hour THB testing did not result into any failures. It is surmised that the presence of condensed moisture is another requirement for migration. Such condition is not present during the THB testing.

"As essential equipment in the metallurgical industry, current air heat exchangers cannot meet the requirements of high temperature heat transfer. In this paper, an energy efficient air heat exchanger, based on accumulation of the heat generated by microwave absorbing materials, is presented according to heat transfer theory and principles of the microwave field. A tubular shaped heat exchanger was designed and built up through temperature-rising curve, and experimental research of microwave high-temperature air heat exchangers was carried out. It was found from experiments that the tubular shaped heat exchanger fabricated using material B could be used for high temperature heat transfer system, and equilibrium temperatures could reach up to 457—485?.IntroductionHeating or cooling of air by heat exchangers is commonly practiced in a wide range of industries including construction, chemical, machinery, textile, printing, and dyeing [1-3]. Generally such heating or cooling of air is achieved in pipe heat exchangers. There are several drawbacks for such heat exchangers, namely, (i) the limitation of temperature to which the pipes can be heated, (ii) tendency to oxidize at high temperature, and (iii) poor strength of metallic pipes at high temperature. These limitations do not allow pipe heat exchangers to be operated at high temperatures [4-6].Microwave heating of inert solids, which are stable at high temperature, is a possible solution to achieve high temperature of the medium in air heat exchangers. It is well-known that microwave heating is an efficient, clean, safe, easy-to-control heating method. Microwave heating utilizes the dielectric and magnetic properties of a material. When microwaves penetrate and spread into the dielectric material, electrons, ions, etc move in the internal electromagnetic field, while the elasticity of inertia and friction impede these movements. This results in a significant thermal effect, increasing the surface temperature rapidly [7-8]. This paper studies mainly design and experimental research of microwave high-temperature air heat exchanger."

The mechanism of thiosulfate decomposition and the products formed were investigated in the presence of pyrite or pyrrhotite in copper-ammonia solutions used for leaching gold. The presence of the sulfides significantly increased the decomposition of thiosulfate. The sulfide-surface-catalyzed oxidation of thiosulfate to tetrathionate by dissolved oxygen or the cupric tetra-ammine complex was proposed to be the dominant thiosulfate decomposition mechanism. The catalysis of the sulfides in this reaction could originate from their strong affinity for aqueous sulfur species and their semiconducting properties. Oxygen was found to be the initial driving force for thiosulfate decomposition in the absence of cupric ions and the driving force for the continuous decomposition of thiosulfate in the presence of cupric ions. Under an oxygen free atmosphere, the decomposition of thiosulfate was limited to reduce the cupric ions and the catalytic effect of the sulfides was also marginal. The dominant oxidative product of thiosulfate was trithionate in alkaline solutions especially in an oxygen rich or cupric ion rich environment. Tetrathionate was found in relatively smaller amounts in an oxygen and cupric ion deficient environment. Tetrathionate was not stable and would further decompose after extended periods. Trithionate concentrations increased almost linearly with time.

A number of state and federal agencies are calling for development of aquatic life criteria for conductivity. These aquatic life criteria or ?benchmarks? are based on observed correlations between conductivity and benthic macroinvertebrate community composition, generally measured by composite metrics or indices. However, development of an aquatic life criterion for a composite variable like conductivity is made difficult by a number of factors. Based on a database from West Virginia, observed patterns of invertebrate community composition versus conductivity may instead be related to a combination of abiotic (e.g., ionic composition, habitat) and biotic (e.g., life history, colonization potential) factors. Many benthic invertebrate taxa also do not respond to increasing conductivity in a consistent relationship. Many states have determined that a composite variable, like conductivity or TDS, is not appropriate for criteria development, as many studies have shown that toxicity varies as a function of ion composition and can be mitigated by elevated hardness. We conclude that the relationships between conductivity and changes in benthic macroinvertebrate community composition are neither strong nor reliable enough to warrant derivation of a criterion based solely on conductivity.

Closure cost estimates may be generated at any stage of a mining operationÆs life; commencing with the initial prefeasibility studies and continuing through to the final decommissioning cost estimates. However, not all mine closure cost estimates are necessarily the same. Cost estimates will vary depending on the purpose for which they are prepared, the organisations requiring or undertaking the estimate and the stage of the mining operation. Different organisations can legitimately arrive at disparate cost estimates for closing the same mine because the organisations have different reasons for requiring the estimates. Another, equally valid, reason for potentially wide variations in cost estimates by different organisations on the same mine site is the different definitions of æclosure costsÆ used by different estimators. This paper considers the different approaches by different organisations including operating companies, government authorities and financial organisations and uses a hypothetical example based on practical experience to illustrate some of these differences in estimation methods.The paper suggest that a more consistent approach to closure cost estimating in the Australian mining industry would assist mining companies, governments, the accounting industry and the broader community to better understand this complex component of mine planning. Newmont USA Limited owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006 (House, 2010). Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix had no process option to treat transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore would be mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a runof- mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/ electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the eight years of successes and challenges with developing the copper L-SX/EW plant and achieving commercial production of copper cathode.

A number of tests were made with various methanation catalysts in fixed-bed, conventional fluidized-bed, and multiple-feed, fluidized-bed equipment to develop catalysts and processes for methanation of synthesis gas. The results show: 1. Methanation reactions may be carried out in 1-inch, bench-scale equipment at high synthesis-gas throughputs with good temperature control of the reactions if a multiple-feed type of fluidized-bed design is used. 2. Nickel is superior to iron as a catalyst for the methanation of synthesis gas, unless the process is considered in terms of a combined operation that produces both gaseous and liquid products. 3. Techniques of catalyst preparation determine, to a large extent, the process life of nickel catalysts, and these techniques must be thoroughly investigated before any conclusions can be reached. 4. Enough data are available to indicate that the sulfur concentrations in synthesis gas that is used for methanation are extremely critical, and maximum process limits should be carefully evaluated.

The generation of low cost power is but one phase of the TVA program for regional development. During the 36 years since TVA began, growth in its generation of electric power has necessitated a shift from a predominantly hydroelectric power system to a combination steam and hydroelectric system. The addition of steam-electric power plants to TVA's generating system was necessitated by the rapid increase in the traditional and defense demands for electric power in the 80,000-square-mile area served by TVA, the need to firm up the hydroelectric power, and the fact that all available sites for sizeable hydroelectric projects had been developed. At present TVA owns and operates 40 power plants--29 hydroelectric and 11 steam-electric plants. The total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plants is 3,105,430 kw, and the capacity of the steam plants is 13,951,135 kw. This provides a total generating capacity of 17,056,565 kw for the plants operated by TVA. Individual capacity of the 112 hydroelectric units ranges from 10,000 to 67,500 kw, and the individual capacity of the steam-electric units now in operation ranges from 60,000 to 950,000 kw. In addition to this generating capacity, TVA distributes the power from 6 U. S. Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric plants on the Cumberland River. These plants contribute an additional 725,000 kw. Also, under an agreement with the Aluminum Company of America, TVA directs the stream flows and generation of their 423,715-kw system on Tennessee River tributaries and shares with Alcoa in the increased generation resulting from this coordinated operation.

'This paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole. By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simp1e and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given. Introduction The problem of determining the angle and direction of the dip of the strata traversed by a drill hole has practical interest, and sometimes vital importance, which need not be emphasized to the oil industry. The need for that type of information has existed ever since wells have been drilled. Certainly it has not subsided, in spite of the numerous inventions and improvements made in other fields of the art of drill-hole exploration. The few examples given in this paper are but illustrative of this fact. In the past, methods have been devised, and used, to solve this problem, but generally they have met with limited success, possibly because they failed more or less to answer the requirements of a modern age for fast yet accurate measurements. If accurate, the results were obtained at the cost of very tedious and lengthy operations. The new S. P.* dipmeter service offered to the oil industry is the result of exhaustive and in this particular field. In 1032 a dipmeter and electromagnetic teleclinom-eter service was made available. The apparatus employed then was of a rather delicate and costly construction, and the measurements had to be made with precautions sometimes difficult to secure on the rig. Although the information given by the electromagnetic dipmeter was limited to the direction of the dip, very interesting results were obtained in California, Trinidad, Venezuela, Rumania and, most notably, in the Netherlands East Indies.+ Apparatus The S. P. dipmeter surveys present none of the drawbacks mentioned above. The apparatus is rugged and free from constructional complications, therefore well adapted to field use. OUTCROPS of gypsum rock near the present site of the city of Gland Rapids, Mich., were known to fur traders early in the nineteenth century. However, the deposits seemed without value and were not worked for some time. So far as cat1 be learned, Michigan gyp- sum was first used by a plasterer who settled in Grand Rapids in 1834 as a member of its fourteenth white family. In building a house for one of the early traders, be used some otnamental stucco mouldings manufactured from the local gypsum deposits for decorations in the gables and around some circular windows. The gypsum was broken out with a hammer, ground in an Indian corn mill, and burlled in a caulclron kettle,. After two attempts, the ornaments were successfully set, and remained on the house until it was destroyed by fire in 1850.

THE heat treatment of the bronze composed of 88 per cent. copper, 10 per cent. tin, and 2 per cent. zinc, has been investigated by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose,1 and also by the U. S. Bureau of Standards.2 The results obtained by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose on dry-sand castings subjected to reheating followed by air cooling, or by quenching in water, are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. 3and 4, have been plotted from values obtained by the Bureau of Standards on material of the same composition and treatment. Both investigations show that the ductility of the cast bronze is improved by heating to 700° C. and cooling in air, the strength not being impaired by this treatment. They are not in agreement, however, as to the effect of quenching, Messrs. Primrose reporting a decrease, and the Bureau of Standards an increase, in both strength and ductility when the cast bronze is heated to 600° or 700° C. and quenched.
