"A new method to determine the elastic modulus of a material using the atomic force microscope (AFM) has been proposed by Tang et al. (Nanotechnology 2008, 19, 495713). This method models the cantilever and the sample as two springs in a series. The ratio of the cantilever spring constant (k) to diameter of the tip (2a) is treated in the model as one parameter (a=k/2a). The value of a, along with the cantilever sensitivity, are determined on two reference samples with known mechanical properties and then used to find the elastic modulus of an unknown sample. To determine the reliability and accuracy of this technique it was tested on several polymers. Traditional depth-sensing nanoindentation was preformed for comparison. Using both methods, the elastic modulus of the polymers tested was calculated. The elastic modulus values from the AFM were within ±(5-20)% of the nanoindenter results.IntroductionThe atomic force microscope (AFM) has proven to be a useful tool for characterizing materials on the micro- to nano-scale. The most common use of AFM is to image and measure the topography of the sample surface, but AFM has also been used to characterize the mechanical properties of materials [1-3]. With AFM's ability to scan the sample surface, features of interest can be found and indented. It provides an advantage over traditional nanoindenters that use optical microscopes and thus cannot resolve nano-scale features. This makes AFM a useful tool for characterizing materials on the nano-scale."

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to give greater impetus to the building of programs safeguarding the employees of the mineral industries from disabling work injuries. The results of the 1960 National Safety Competition are presented in this publication. Mines and quarries that were awarded the Sentinels of Safety trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group and those mineral operations that ranked second, third, fourth, and fifth in the competition are listed with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling work injuries. In addition, this publication presents statistical data on disabling work-injury experience in all other mines and quarries participating in the annual competitions.

The investigations of the Leningrad ruining lilstitute on this problem are carrying out in the following main directions: 1) The analysis and study of contaminants migration at particular sites of mining development; 2) The working out of theoretical and me- thodical basic principles of aquifers migration tests; 3) The work- ing out of methods of the forcasting of groundwater pollution pro- cesses; 4) The theoretical and uethodical substantiation of hydro- geological observations of groundwater pollution processes; 5) The wort ing out of the measures at the groundwater control and their rational use at the particular sites of mining development. The research that have been carried out by the present moment have covered the wide range of wining and geological conditions -- as from the point of view of specific genetic types of water-be- aring rocks (porous, fissured and fissured-porous), as well as from the point of view of pollution sources (surface waste water basins and underground basins of non-standard water) and the cha- racter of the latter's migration (tracers, physically neutral ef- fluents, heavy or light ones). The combination of specialized mi- gration tests and observations carryed out at uoayi, sites, as well as the following ar~,alysis o:i the data of field study allowed to get useful theoretical, methodical and practical results on the all directions above mentioned, ns the summing up of these results the author proposed the concept of controlled ground :ester polluti on. In March 2003, Rio Tinto Coal AustraliaÆs (RTCA) new Hail Creek open cut coal mine commenced operations in the Bowen Basin. Hail Creek is a two-seam strip mining operation utilising two 90 m3 draglines and a fleet of excavators and trucks to remove the overburden. All overburden at Hail Creek is blasted prior to excavation. The mine conducts its own drill and blast operations while engaging Dyno Nobel for the provision of explosives supply and loading truck (bulk explosives vehicle û BEV) services. This arrangement was favoured over outsourcing the entire blasting function to a contractor. Subsequent to a value engineering review, the mine set about developing and implementing a blasting operation that did not rely on the need to store bulk quantities of ammonium nitrate on site. There were advantages identified in doing this, in particular the reduction of capital expenditure required and reduced exposure to a number of recently introduced security requirements. This approach also makes sense operationally. The establishment of reload facilities for the BEV close to the blasting location, where turnaround times are kept to a minimum, increases the productivity of the BEV. For this strategy to be successful the logistics of ammonium nitrate supply into the blasting operations has to be well planned and thoroughly executed. This means a robust planning and forecasting arrangement needs to be established with the supplier and transporters of the ammonium nitrate. To date, 80 million bcm of overburden has been blasted at Hail Creek and each year the quantity of overburden requiring blasting is increasing. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study: evaluating the effectiveness to date of the strategy to conduct blasting operations without ammonium nitrate storage on site, and identifying whether there is a limit to which this strategy can operate after which the introduction of bulk ammonium nitrate storage facilities are necessary.

To evaluate the potential for dust reduction, during blasthole drilling, of water or foam applied directly into the drill hole. Approach The Bureau of Mines tested a through-the-drill-steel water and foam injection technique in two noncoal mines to evaluate the method's potential for greater dust reduction. The tests were performed by drilling a series of blastholes for an entire face (a 90 minute time-period). For the first 45 minutes of drilling, foam or water was applied through the drill steel. Blowing ventilation was supplied to the entry about 50 feet from the face. The dust concentration measurements were made by a Real-Time Aerosol Monitor (RAM-I), and the data were read out on a strip chart recorder. The evaluation test results showed that the water or foam injection technique, when used on localized dust sources, can be an extremely effective dust control method. Small amounts of water used in this method have also allowed it flexibility to be used in water-soluble ores such as salt, gypsum, anhydrite, and trona. How The System Works Water or foam is mixed with compressed air (approximately 100-120 psi) with suitable metering systems and forced through the drill steel into the blast hole at the point of dust generation. Because the water or foam is applied at the source, minimal quantities of liquid are needed (0.2 to 0.6 gpm). These low flowrates are sufficient to just moisten the dust emerging from the blast hole, thus eliminating a major source of airborne dust. The wet drilling procedure also eliminates a second source of dust. With dry drilling, the dust from the blast hole falls to the floor. Since this can be a 15-ft drop or more, the impact can send the dust billowing up from the floor, adding to the airborne dust. With wet drilling, the moistened dust merely dribbles down the face.

In the course of an investigation of the influence of bismuth on copper carried out some years ago, (1) the author found that phosphorus exerted a beneficial effect on bismuth-copper alloys of low bismuth and oxygen content by neutralizing the embrittling effect of the bismuth. In the intervening years, a further examination of bismuth-phosphorus-copper alloys has been canied out and the influence of other elements and combinations of elements on copper containing bismuth has been studied.The results recorded in the present paper are part of this investigation.MATERIALSAll the alloys were made from high-grade copper (KS.A. wire-bar) of the following composition: copper 99·95%, oxygen 0,040'%, iron 0·0015%, sulphur less than 0-001%, bismuth less than (j>'OOl%, other elements each less than O· 0010/<-. The bar was hot rolled and cold drawn to strip which was cut into short lengths and cleaned in nitric acid ready for melting.A piece of this 'strip was drawn to wire 0·08 in. diam., annealed at 5000 C, and measured for electrical conductivity as a check on purity. The result was 101·5% of the I.E'.C. standard.In making the alloys, phosphorus was added as 14% phosphor-copper, bismuth as 17% bismuth-copper, and the other constituents either as copper alloys or as elements of a high degree of purity.PREPARATIQN OF STRIPSThe charges were melted in plumbago crucibles (Morgan salamander brand) in an oil-fired furnace, Le;, in the manner commonly adopted in industrial practice. The copper was first melted under charcoal, well stirred with a chaned stick, and the necessary alloying elements added and stirred in with the stick. The weight of a charge varied according to requirements but generally was about 4 lb. The charges were poured into slightly tapered brass moulds heated to about 1000 C and dressed with a mixture of mineral oil and tallow. They were not only poured under charcoal through the burning mould dressing but also- through a ring of flame produced by burning kerosene on asbestos cord wrapped round the top of the mould. Experiments carried out with plain copper proved that by this means oxygen could be excluded from the stream of metal. The billets were 7·5 in. long x O·83 in. diam. x 1·3 lb. weight.The billets were cropped about 1 in. from the top, cleaned in nitric acid, and measured for density by the usual method of weighing in air and -in water. As these measurements were required only as a check on casting, technique a high degree of accuracy was not essential (accuracy = -+ 0·2%).

Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. I-type briquette was the largest size which the plant could handle.This carbonization plant represents the intermediate stage of development between the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne and the commercial production of hard char as a metallurgical fuel. Sand, which is used widely under the wheels of mine locomotives to prevent slipping, is an important source of silica dust breathed by some employees of certain mines, such as those having appreciable grades on haulageways. The sand, as received, contains dust, and other dust is produced by passage of wheels of the train over the sand. Dust is disseminated into the air by such means as handling during unloading, drying, transporting, underground, sprinkling on the rails, passage of trains over Sections where sand is being or has been used, and walking over deposits of sand (or the dust thereof) on the haulageway. The disseminated dust is inhaled not only by persons in the immediate vicinity but also by others to whom the contaminated air travels. The inhalation of this must should be prevented to eliminate any possibility of the material causing silicosis (sometimes referred to as miners' consumption, miners' asthma, miners' phthiris, or miners' lung) and defined by the American Public Health Association4/ as: A disease due to breathing air containing silica (Si02), characterized anatomically by generalized fibrotic changes and the development of miliary nodulation in both lungs, and clinically by shortness of breath, decreased chest expansion, lessened capacity for worm, absence of fever, increased susceptibility to tuberculosis (some or all of which symptoms may be present), and by characteristic X-ray finding.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has committed to solve a major drainage problem in the suburban Chicago community of Griffith, Indiana. The Cady Marsh Ditch is currently undersized and on occasion spills its banks causing flooding and economic setbacks to the community. Preliminary studies have identified both tunnel and surface solutions as being attractive and viable. The USACE has decided that this project is an opportunity to use the design-build contracting approach to maximize ingenuity in project approach and to allow the market to dictate whether a surface or subsurface solution is most attractive. The tunnel would be over one-mile in length through sands, gravels and clay. Water control will be an issue during tunneling. The paper will explore the contracting approach to the project and the adaptation of Underground Technology Research Council (UTRC) guidelines for underground contracting to a design build project. The roles of Owner, Owner’s consultant, and design-build contractor will be defined as interpreted by the USACE and key contract provisions will be described and contrasted with a traditional design-bid-build approach to tunnel construction.

Measurements of the latent heat of transformation from a to 0 titanium were made using a pulse-heating technique. Rapid heating was accomplished electrically by discharging a low-inductance capci-tor hank through a thin-strip specimen. Both high-purity titanium and titanium containing 2700 ppm of 0 were studied. An electrical-resistivity technique and a plot of energy input us temperature rise were used to monitor the phase change. It was concluded that: 1) the latent heat of transformation is 800 i 48 cal per mole; 2) phase change occurred in less than 200 sec; and 3) the percentage phase change that occurs is linearly a function of the energy available for phase change. In addition, this experiment provides a simple and inexpensive method for determining specific heat of electrical conductors over large temperature ranges. The chief advantages of this technique over past pulse-heating experiments are: 1) static measurements of capacitor-bank voltage capacitance and specimen resistance can be made quickly and accurately to determine the energy supplied to the specimen; 2) the specimen is heated so rapidly (10 µ sec) that there is no appreciable heat loss during the heating. THE purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of the capacitor bank as a tool for basic experimental investigations and to determine the rapid phase-change kinetics of titanium. The capacitor provides a number of unique properties: 1) rapid heating rates in the order of l09oC per sec can be obtained; heating rates as slow as l04oC per sec are available by merely adding a given amount of inductance to the circuit; 2) the energy input can be precisely determined and can be varied from several joules to millions of joules, depending on the bank capacitance and voltage; 3) the specimen can be heated uniformly through the thickness and length or non-uniformly, as desired; 4) the apparatus is simple and inexpensive and can be easily altered; 5) the form of the specimen can be wires, sheets, foils, rods, and cylinders; 6) there is great precision in the timing of events; 7) this technique may be readily used in conjunction with rapid cooling.

The Bureau of Mines studied the cutting characteristics of point-attack bits to reduce airborne respirable dust and energy during cutting. Linear cutting of two coal types using four bit types at three depths of cut with three space-depth ratios was performed with a modified horizontal milling machine using an optical particle-size monitor for respirable dust sampling. The cutting action of one bit on a rotary hardhead mining machine was mathematically analyzed and compared with the results of the linear cutting test. Airborne respirable dust per unit mass cut (specific dust) was found to be a monotonically increasing function of specific energy. Specific dust and energy decrease with increasing depth of cut. The amount of nonairborne respirable dust was 100 to 1,000 times greater than the airborne dust. The plumb-bob bit produced the most airborne respirable dust and the highest specific energy of the four bits tested. Rotary cutting was a greater dust producer and energy consumer than linear cutting because of the constantly changing depth of cut, space-depth ratio, and attack angle of the bit relative to the horizontal bedding planes. A new cutting technique is proposed to minimize the existing problems of the rotary cutting machines by providing greater production, reduced dust, and minimized methane ignition potential at the face.

The mining laws relating to winding-ropes in some of the German provinces are very strict, and severe tests have to be periodically made to see that the ropes in use come up to the prescribed standard. A few notes on the method of testing the ropes and the results obtained may be of interest to the members of the Institute. Permission must be given by the Inspector of Mines to put up a winding-plant; and previous to installation a full report made by the manager, clearly setting forth all details of the shaft, the pit-head, engines and appliances appertaining thereto has to be sent to the mining officials. Accompanying each subsequent report, further details, such as the name of the firm supplying the rope, construction, quality of steel, date of installment, weight per meter, length, particulars of the safetycatches, cages, etc., must be given. At least one spare rope must be kept at ever? shaft ready for use in case of emergency. The rope must hang in the shaft, with cage attached, not less than twenty-four hours before it is used for winding; and it must have undergone a severe test in the manner hereafter described. The laws prescribe that when a rope is continually in use it must be tested every three months; but if the rope is only used every few days it must be tested at least every six months, in the presence of the superior officer; and notification of the date of testing has to be sent to the Bergrath two days before the test is made, in order that he can personally superintend the operation if he chooses. Should winding have been stopped for a long time, it is not necessary to test every six months; but before the rope can be used again it must be tested.

"Three major challenges for the mining industry are the minimization of energy use, water consumption and environmental impact. Therefore, any technique that reduces milling waste, decreases water usage and shrinks impact during mine life must be considered a major innovation in mining.To these ends, one of the most impactful developments in mining within the last 10 years has been the expanded use of high technology sensors to create preconcentrations of mine ore (Jönsson, 2014). The most common sensors used are charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras, that allow through a red, green and blue (RGB) coloring system, the separation of minerals with different colors, tones and, in many cases, with differences in brightness.More recently, the development and use of dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) to enable the separation by atomic density of the constituent minerals within a given rock has become a reality. Within this work, a rapid bibliographical review of the CCD and DE-XRT methods and examples of their usage within mining and the industrial minerals sector are presented.Sensor-based sorting in miningAutomation within mining is one of the industry’s current goals. Sensors of various kinds have been used as steps toward automation in recent years, from improving the safety and productivity of haul trucks through the use of cameras and global positioning satellites (GPS), to the divination of slope failures. Just as with other mining areas, sorting has improved dramatically and made great steps toward automation in recent years (Wotruba et al., 2014).Sensor-based sorting (SBS) uses spectromatic sensors to identify intrinsic characteristics of particles and separates them by either mechanical or pneumatic means into different product streams (Wotruba et al., 2014). SBS can be used with great effectiveness to improve gravimetric beneficiation through the selective separation or preconcentration of run of mine ores (ROM)."

"The morphology of pellet feed is known to influence several properties of iron ore pellets, including drop number, compression strength and reduction properties. The effect of grinding method on the particle size, specific surface area and particle shape of an iron ore concentrate has been studied. Grinding methods considered were ball mill and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). 5 different samples (Blaine= 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100 and 2200 cm2g-1) were used to compare the size, shape and specific surface of particles for each grinding methods. Particle size was meticulously examined by sieve analysis, laser sizing and image analysis. In samples ground by ball mill, it has been observed that the fraction of particles <10µm increases from 39% to 46% as the Blaine number increases from 1800 to 2200 cm2g-1. For HPGR samples, corresponding figures are 41% and 49% respectively. It is evident that for samples ground by HPGR, the fraction of fine particles is higher than that of those ground in the ball mill. To measure the specific surface area of particles, Blaine and BET were used. A higher real surface area was observed from HPGR treatment in comparison to ball mill grinding, provided by a higher porosity, cracks, roughness and new surfaces. Shape factor of particles was determined using three descriptors: circularity, roughness, and aspect ratio. It was also observed that particles produced by HPGR were more elongated, less circular, and rougher than those processed by the ball mill. 1. INTRODUCTION Particle size and shape are important parameters that can significantly affect mineral processing plants and pelletizing plant performances (Brozek and Surowiak, 2007). It has also been proposed that green pellet quality is directly related to the amount of fine particles in a pelletizing plant (Dwarapudi et al., 2008; Umadevi et al., 2008; Gul et al, 2014; Van der Meer, 2015). Particle size distribution and specific surface area (SSA) are also key factors that can control the quality of green and fired pellets. Processing circuits generally reduce the fines fraction to lower than the required specific surface area (SSA). It is therefore necessary to regrind concentrates to produce suitable pellet feed for further treatment in the balling and firing steps [1, 2]. Two main methods are used for re-grinding of concentrate; high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and ball mill. Given the different forces used to reduce size in these methods, it is expected the shape of particles will be different (Pourghahramani and Forssberg, 2005)."

Alloy powders are commonly used in the purification of zinc sulfate solutions for use in standard electrowinning practice. The primary goal of this research was to study the use of zinc-lead alloys for similar reactions in the galvanic stripping of impurities from organic solutions. The effects of various parameters on the electrochemical behavior of commercially produced zinc-lead alloy powders were determined. A qualitative evaluation and summary of the influence of the more pertinent parameters on iron removal from di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) by galvanic stripping is given. Water concentration, oxygen content and reaction temperature were the principal factors affecting the reaction rate and process efficiency. Activation energies were also calculated and indicated that the reaction changes from chemical to diffusion control .with increasing temperature in the range of 35" to 45°C. The results showed that zinc-lead alloy gave faster reaction rates with less sensitivity to process variables than SHG zinc as a reducing agent for galvanic stripping. The role of lead could be as cathodic sites for the reaction which enhances the zinc dissolution or anodic half reaction. The morphology of the zinc-lead alloy surfaces, before and after the reactions, supports this assumption.

This work is a follow-up to previous research that attempted to predict the location of spontaneous heating episodes in underground coal mine pillars. The objective of the original work was to see if the data obtained by commonly used detection methods could accurately predict spontaneous combustion episodes in coal pillars. Data accumulation during the study was enhanced when a spontaneously generated fire occurred within one of the pillars being examined. The fire provided researchers with realistic data that could be used to determine if fire prediction was possible. Results from the initial study found that the atmospheric status equations that were used provided little advance notice that combustion would occur where it did. This study reevaluated the accumulated data by applying it to recently developed equations and compared these results with previously obtained information to determine if a combination of these techniques could more effectively predict impending combustion.

Mine planning at Cassiar consists of an annual cycle of projection, control, evaluation and revision following completion of annual diamond drilling during the summer months . The inherent difficulty in evaluating fibre grade and distribution, combined with a high-wall phase or push-back mining system, requires continuous modification to designs and schedules based on a cumulative evaluation of equipment performance and prediction versus production. To expedite the planning sequence, a mini-computer system has been introduced which allows emphasis to be placed on optimizing designs, exempting personnel from manual calculations and tabulations.

Hydrogen sulfide was decomposed to elemental sulfur in an electrical discharge. With He, N., or Ar diluents, a threshold voltage between 1 and 3 kV was required for the decomposition reaction to occur in a laboratory ozonizer. Above the threshold voltage, the HAS decomposition rate increased with increasing voltage, but the increase was more pronounced with argon diluent than with either nitrogen or helium. In common with other reactions in an electrical discharge, the B2S decomposition decreased with increasing temperature in the range of -410 to +61° C. The reaction did not appear to be rate-controlled by a solid-gas sorption step because the introduction of activated charcoal into the electrical discharge zone did not significantly affect the decomposition yield. In the presence of polymeric chlorofluoro-carbon oil, 90 pct conversion of the 3 pct H2S in helium was obtained at 14 kV, 60 Hz, a 2-mm electrode gap, and a gas-residence time greater than 1 min. Under the same experimental conditions in the absence of oil, the conversion was only about 50 pct.

When management is confronted with the risk of constructing a waste disposal well, these are some of the questions which may arise. Should the company expand the present waste treatment plant? More lagoons will cut into valuable acreage which might be needed later, and yet the pollution engineer says he can guarantee results. On the other hand, does the formation being used for those successful disposal wells off to the west extend over far enough to be used for the company&apos;s own well? Will the formation be thick enough? Will it be too deep? Will it be porous and permeable enough? Apart from needing to make a profit on the products made at the plant, plant officials must sometimes act under pressure to comply with pollution standards. The manager must build the cost of the pollution control system into the price of the products made by the company.
