Bottom ash contains several ferrous materials (ferrous metals, Fe3O4, Fe2O3, FeS, etc.). In particular, ferrous metals contain heavy metal because Ni and Cr are chemically attracted to iron. Likewise, Cu is used to coat Ni and Cr metals as polish or to prevent corrosion. In this study, an Fe3O4-Fe2O3 double layer (similar to pure Fe) was found to have been formed in ferrous metal during air-annealing in an incinerator (1000°C). A strong thermal shock such as one that occurs during the water-cooling of bottom ash results in the breakdown of this oxidation layer, facilitating the degradation of ferrous metals and formation of corrosion products. Therefore, Fe-ion (heavy metal) oxides may be formed on ferrous metals and may be separated from bottom ash via magnetic separation. This study sought to investigate the separation ratio of heavy metals as magnetic separation and mineralogical formation of Fe-ion (heavy metal).

In a Bureau of Mines investigation to develop lead alloys with improved tensile strength and creep resistance, lead-base alloys containing cadmium and antimony in nominal 1-to-1 atomic ratios were melted in air, cast, and rolled into sheet to 90 percent reduction at temperatures varying from room temperature to 175° C. Tensile testing at room temperature and stress-rupture testing at 900±3° F were conducted on the as-rolled alloys. The best tensile properties were observed in an alloy of Pb-4.2 wt pct Cd-4.5 wt pct Sb which exhibited an average tensile strength of 7,270 psi with 36 percent elongation in 2 inches. An alloy of Pb-5.5 wt pct Cd-6.0 wt pct Sb had 100-hour stress-rupture values of approximately 2,100 psi and 1,000-hour values of approximately 1,700 psi.

Portals to access underground mines are important infrastructure and their design requires careful consideration. Portals are generally expected to last for the life of the mine. Typically, the exposure of personnel and equipment is high, with many hundreds of movements through the portal per day. Consequently, the risk associated with geotechnical instability must be extremely low. Portals are often established from a boxcut. In areas where the weathering profile is well developed, the design and execution of the boxcut can involve significant effort, with the objective of minimizing the volume of the boxcut, whilst ensuring that conditions at the design depth are suitable for establishing a stable portal. Properly designed site investigations are a critical part of this process. Currently available portal design guidelines have not been updated for decades, however the equipment and ground support systems have changed significantly in recent years. Many mine portals have since been constructed in a relatively short time frame with success, often in challenging ground conditions using some of the more modern approaches to ground support. This is beneficial because delays in establishing a portal will generally delay other critical path activities, and lead to cost overruns.

Mining operations in arid regions are compelled to reduce their consumption of fresh water. Closed water circuits are an attractive solution and, in addition to reducing freshwater consumption, have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption as well as the environmental impact by eliminating effluent discharge. Accumulating ionic species have been shown to hinder collector adsorption which reduces the recovery of valuable minerals. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of degrading water quality on collector adsorption however there is very limited understanding as to how this takes place from an electrochemical perspective. This study therefore aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying concentrations affects the electrochemical adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto galena. The synthetic plant water used in this study comprised of single salt solutions to isolate the effects of the ionic species of interest. The ionic strengths were varied between 0.0242 M, 0.0727 M, 0.1212 M and 0.2426 M which correspond to University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) synthetic plant waters of 1, 3, 5 and 10SPW, respectively. Mineral rest potentials indicated how changing water quality affected xanthate-mineral interactions. Microflotation observed the impact of changing water quality on mineral floatability.

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. Almost any subsidence monitoring program may face the following difficulties:

A comparison of the amount of minus-28-mesh product produced by a standard grinding test procedure is provided for 45 non-metallic materials. The percentage of product, the weight of product per unit of energy used and the weight of product per mill revolution are shown. The results exhibited excellent reproducibility and demonstrated an accurate comparison of grindability for non-metallic materials.

"The Big Four zinc-deposit, directly above the north bank of the Green Mountain Reservoir on the Blue River, Summit County, Cole., was discovered in 1937 by the present owner, Walter McDaniel, who lives on the property. Mr. McDaniel, together with members of his family, have worked the mine on a small scale since its beginning and have shipped quantities of sorted high-grade ore to the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah, and the Combined Metals Corp. at Bauer, Utah. More recently, parts of the nine have been operated by lessees.The property had been examined previously by the Federal Geological Survey, and the geological report was made available' to the Bureau of Mines.The Big Four mining claim was located in 1937 by Walter McDaniel and his wife Frances,- who had been prospecting in the vicinity since 1933. The discovery of the high-grade zinc deposit caused considerable excitement, as it had not been regarded as a mineralized area.Mining was begun in 1937 and carried on until 1944 by Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel with the help of a few hired miners. During 1944, parts of the mine were leased: to various parties Who produced small quantities of ore but did no development work.Shipments during 1941 .totaled 752 tons; during 1942, 387 tons; and during 1943, 510 tons. From the beginning of 1944 to April of that year, 98 tons wore produced and shipped to Utah,Since the lessees began operations, a grade of 30 to 35 percent zinc has been maintained by careful sorting. No production has been recorded for 1945.The Big Four mine is situated on Colorado State- Highway 9 between Dillon and Kremmling on the south face of Green Mountain overlooking the Green Mountain Reservoir, a Federal irrigation project on the Hue River, Green Mountain rises 1,600 feet above the general level of the valley to an altitude of 9,408 feet and the surrounding terrain, i s correspondingly mountainous and rugged."

Many refineries are in the process of revamping and expanding their existing facilities. Most of the refineries are located in coastal areas due to ease of transportation and storage of crude oil. Considering the criticality of structures as well as prevailing soil conditions, most of the structures are supported on pile foundations. In depth review of sub-surface investigations data followed by liquefaction assessment of the site, it is noticed that site is prone to liquefaction during the seismic event. Among various techniques, driven cast-in-situ piles were selected to mitigate liquefaction. Static cone penetration tests were conducted during the pre and post installation of driven cast-in-situ piles at identified locations. Analysis of cone penetration test data shows that considerable ground improvement has been achieved post-installation of driven cast-in-situ piles.

The investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at t,he Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word ''Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy," or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limitJ' has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.' In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

Encouraged by a strongly growing and evolving market for granulated products, Paul Wurth continuously improves its granulation and dewatering technologies to provide customers with state of the art installations. Continuously developed know-how about the granulation process of iron blast furnace slag enabled application to non-ferrous materials such as Ni-Slag, Pb-Slag, Blister Copper, Cu-Matte and even TiO2-Slag, which rank among the most difficult materials to granulate. This paper identifies how critical objectives in granulation and dewatering technologies applied to different molten materials with respect to various product quality objectives can be addressed. The differences between hot and cold water granulation systems are explained, including the step from cold runner to granulation water tank. Development of a flow and pressure controlled blowing box is the latest step to optimize the granulation process in order to meet the latest standards in terms of quality, power consumption and environmental protection.

Fatigue-related risk is a persistent safety concern for the mining industry. However, fatigue and sleepiness are often treated interchangeably, which can lead to confusion and potentially less effective reduction of safety risk. To provide clarity, we present an overview of similarities and differences between work-related fatigue risk and sleepiness including definitions, theories, measurements, and mitigation strategies. As a supplement, a summative visual model which highlights these similarities and differences is presented. Expanding industry knowledge in this area will assist safety professionals in crafting more targeted risk management practices appropriate for work-related fatigue risk, sleepiness, or both.

Because of the absence of an iron-producing industry, the Pacific Northwest is working under an economic handicap. This is particularly apparent in the gray-iron-foundry industry because of the high price of pig iron imported from foreign sources or shipped in from producing ?areas within the United States. The high prices and sometimes short supply of ferrous metal products has put a brake on industrialization, which has been only partly compensated by the availability of cheap electric power. The economic condition of the gray-iron-foundry industry could be improved by establishing a small iron-producing industry based on the locally available ores. Moreover, establishing a local iron smelter would create a market for resources now dormant. Low-grade ores of manganese, chromium, and nickel would become usable in industry when combined with the iron ore from Scappoose. Pig iron produced in even limited quantities would level out the fluctuation in supply. The ore deposits, being small, would not supply enough pig iron to satisfy the entire demand. This condition necessitates designing special pig irons that will carry abnormally high proportions of scrap in the cupola charge.

About three years ago, the writer presented a paper1 on the rate of heating and cooling of a 24-in. round ingot. The present paper deals with work done on larger ingots at the plant of the Allis Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee, Wis., in August, 1919. Sufficient data on ingots of all sizes were desired to enable one to calculate in advance the rate at which any ingot could be raised to a forging temperature without injury to the steel, determining also the temperature gradient between different sections of the ingot and the length of time necessary to heat to the center. This has now been experimentally determined for 24-in. and 45-in. ignots by the writer and for a 18-in. cube by E. F. Law.2 J. F. Harper has also made tests on heat-treating temperatures on 30-in, ingots; which data are included in this paper. No attempt is made here to work out a formula for the heat penetration of steel, for too many factors are involved concerning which we have not sufficient information, as for instance, the specific heat of steel up to 2300' F. It is hoped that eventually a set of formulas will be developed so that one may calculate maximum allowable temperature differences within an ingot for any particular kind of steel and the rate of absorption of heat and temperature gradient within the ingot for a definite temperature head. This is an audience, I know, that shares my interest in a subject that is currently getting a lot of attention -the tendency of our Nation to draw increasingly on overseas supplies of certain mineral commodities, and proportionately less on domestic sources for these minerals. That we do obtain substantial quantities of some essential minerals from abroad is easy to demonstrate. That we will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt. Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. As with many phenomena, their meaning is open to a variety of interpretations.

Figure # 1 Shows a new concept combining some of the proven application advantages of the power shovel with which we are all familiar, and applies the advantages of the dragline for the benefit of the user. First, the hydraulic excavator enjoys tooth forces of the shovel because the dipper is attached to the machine with a dipperstick and boom, and can often actually realize greater tooth forces than a shovel because of the prize action of the dipper in hard digging. Second, the hydraulic excavator enjoys the application advantage of the dragline because both the operator and the machine are up above, sitting on top where the operator oversees the excavation and the machine's operating work range is greatly increased.

Success, no matter how obtained, is easier to defend than almost success, regardless of the education or the degree of refinement of the seeker. Similarly, investment dollars are more readily available to a successful, uneducated and unscientific practitioner than to his beginning or unlucky professional counterpart.

ECENT papers dealing with the properties of unalloyed iodide titanium have been directed primarily at the determination of base-line properties for alloy investigations. Early work was limited to a few tests because of the limited availability of iodide titanium at the time. In the results of papers by Campbell et al.,1 Gonser and Litton,2 Jaffee and Campbell,3 inlay and Snyder,4 and Jaffee, Ogden, and Maykuth, data on mechanical properties are presented for unalloyed iodide titanium in the annealed and cold-worked conditions. Data are presented in this paper which show the effects of heat treatment on the structure and mechanical properties of commercially produced iodide titanium. Correlation is made between microstruc-tural variables and the mechanical properties. Experimental Procedures Melting Stock: The melting stock used was as-deposited iodide titanium, produced by New Jersey Zinc Co. The furnished analysis showed the following range of impurities: N, 0.004 to 0.008 pct; Mn, 0.005 to 0.013; Fe, 0.0035 to 0.025; Al, 0.013 to 0.015; Mo, 0.0015; Pb, 0.0045 to 0.0065; Cu, 0.0015 to 0.002; Sn, 0.001 to 0.01; Mg, 0.0015 to 0.002; and Ni, 0.003. Hydrogen content as determined by vacuum-fusion analysis was 0.0091 wt pct (0.44 atomic pct) after arc melting and fabrication. Nitrogen analysis on the arc-melted and fabricated titanium showed a content of less than 0.002 pct N. The average hardness of the furnished stock was Rf 70, or approximately 85 VHN. Melting Procedure: The as-deposited rods were rolled, sheared, and degreased in preparation for arc melting. The charge was arc-melted with a tungsten electrode in a water-cooled copper crucible under a positive pressure of high purity (99.96 pct) argon. The final ingot was approximately 2 in. in diameter and showed no increase in hardness over that of the initial stock. Fabrication: Heating for fabrication was done in air. It was begun by forging the ingot into a 3/4 in. diam rod, at an initial temperature of 1600°F. Scale was removed by sandblasting. The rod was then swaged to 1/4 in. diam at room temperature through a series of 20 dies, with approximately 10 pct reduction in area between each die. An anneal of 1 hr at 850 °C in air was given after the 1/2 in. die, such that the final cold reduction was 75 pct. Sections cut from this rod were used for test and microstructure specimens. Heat Treatment: Heat treatments were carried out in resistance tube furnaces with stainless-steel linings, under an atmosphere of gettered argon. As further protection against contamination, the specimens were packed in titanium turnings in a titanium sleeve. Control experiments have shown negligible hardness increases with this method, indicating that contamination from oxygen and nitrogen is slight. Three cooling rates were employed in this work; these have been designated as water quenching, argon cooling (to simulate air cooling under a controlled atmosphere), and furnace cooling. The cooling rate for an argon cool is 100°C per min for the first minute, with an average cooling rate of 35°C per min over a 15-min period. A furnace cool requires about 10 hr, with an average cooling rate of 3.6oC per min during the first hour, and an average cooling rate of 1.2°C per min over the 10-hr period. Microimpact Test: The specimen adopted was based on the cylindrical Izod Type Y specimen (ASTM, E23-41T). All dimensions were reduced to half scale, including the notch radius. Specifications are shown in Fig. 1. The specimen is held vertically in an adapter and broken as a cantilever beam. Impact tests were run on a constant-velocity (11.34 ft per sec) Tinius Olsen impact testing machine with a total available energy of 100 in.-lb. Tests were made to determine the correlation between this microimpact and the standard V-notch Charpy impact test. Curves showing impact energy as a function of temperature for both impact tests are plotted in Fig. 2. Transition temperatures, when they occur, are about the same for both impact tests. All three titanium-rich materials have the same conversion factor, 10. Tensile Testing: Tensile tests were conducted on Baldwin-Southwark testing machines using the 600, 2400, or 3000 1b range. Specifications for the test specimen were taken from the 1948 edition of the ASM Metals Handbook, and are shown in Fig. 1. "The electrokinetic and flotation behaviors of ilmenite using lead ions as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector were studied. The results of microflotation show that the flotability of ilmenite can be improved by lead ions obviously. The isoelectric point of ilmenite increases from 5.32 to 7.7 after the addition of lead ions because of the adsorption of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+. The results of zeta potential measurements and the collector adsorption density calculation show that the adsorption of sodium oleate on the ilmenite surface via chemisorptions in addition to electrostatic interactions. Besides, the adsorption density calculation results show that as the addition of lead ions as the activator, the adsorption amounts of collector are greater than those without activation which is in aggrement with the flotation behaviors. INTRODUCTION Ilmenite, as an oxide mineral of formula FeTiO3, is usually used as the main resource of the extraction of titanium (Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999). There are many researches showing that the conventional methods, such as gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation, do not work efficiently as expected (Mehdilo et al., 2015; Zhu et al., 2011). Nowadays, to produce ilmenite concentration feasibly and efficiently, these separation methods above are combined for a reason that the raw ilmenite ores are characteristic of poor, fine and complicated. Moreover, surface modification, such as surface dissolution method, microwave irradiation and oxidation roasting, is applied to improve the flotability of ilmenite currently (Welham and Llewellyn, 1998; Zhang and Ostrovski, 2002). Generally, fatty acid salts are used as the collector for the flotation of oxide minerals and sodium oleate is usually used as the collector for the flotation of imenite ores (Fuerstenau and Pradip, 2005). The mechanism, such as individual ion electrostatic adsorption, chemical adsorption, ion–molecule dimeric complex adsorption, and the coadsorption of ion and molecule, have not been discussed systematically using sodium oleate as the collector in the flotation of ilmenite (Somasundaran, 1983). Under the activation circumstance using the lead ion as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector, the interaction mechanism seems to be still unclear. In the present study, the interaction mechanism between ilmenite and sodium oleate using lead ion as the activator are studied by microflotation, zeta potential measurements and adsorption density calculation. EXPERIMENTAL Materials and reagents Pure ilmenite minerals were obtained from Panzhihua, Sichuan province, China. The minerals were ground in a porcelain mill with an agate ball. Following that, the prosucts were sieved, and the samples of -0.074+0.038 mm size fraction were used for the microflotation experiments. The results of XRF show that the content of titanium element is 30.58%, showing that the purity of ilmenite is above 90%. On the basis of the results of XRF, it is determined that the purity of ilmenite is very high and meets the needs of microflotation"
