"Relating flotation performance to the electrochemical characteristics of a pulp remains a complex issue both in fundamental research and in practice. For example, in the case of thiol collectors different Eh values can result in the formation of the dimer or the metal thiolate which may or may not enhance the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, are usually manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by the control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system. It is also possible to vary the potential by the addition of modifiers such as sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the addition of the oxidising agents, NaClO and H2O2, on valuable mineral recoveries and grades in the flotation of sulphides from a PGM bearing Merensky ore. Batch flotation tests were conducted at pH 9.2, the natural pH of the system, in the absence and presence of a xanthate collector and Eh modifiers, viz. NaClO or H2O2. Most importantly in this way it was possible to vary Eh at constant pH and DO levels. The results indicate that in the absence or presence of xanthate the addition of H2O2 reduced both the recovery and grade of copper and nickel. In the absence of xanthate, the addition of NaClO improved the recovery of copper slightly and both the recovery and grade of nickel significantly, but in the presence of xanthate NaClO addition resulted in unchanged copper recovery and grade, but those of nickel were reduced. Based on anecdotal evidence that the addition of trace amounts of a potential modifier could improve flotation performance further tests were conducted the results of which suggest improved flotation performance.INTRODUCTIONIn the Merensky Reef, platinum group minerals (PGM) are commonly associated with base metal sulphides (BMS) and this has an effect on the way in which these minerals can be concentrated by flotation (Vermaak, Venter & Pistorius, 2004; Wiese, Harris & Bradshaw, 2005; Schouwstra, Kinloch & Lee., 2000). A major problem stemming from this association has been reported to be the loss of valuable minerals (PGM) associated with the loss of BMS (Wiese et al., 2005) during flotation. Shackleton (2007) suggested that PGMs behave in a similar manner to sulphides during flotation. Therefore, in order to recover the PGM, base metals are targeted. There is thus a need to investigate ways to improve the flotation performance of the sulphide minerals. The electrochemistry of the flotation of sulphide minerals has been studied for over half a century and there is consensus that sulphide minerals float only under a suitable redox environment (Heyes & Trahar 1979). This implies that reducing and oxidizing conditions during flotation of ores such as Merensky can be manipulated/varied to achieve an optimum flotation response.During flotation, sulphide minerals interact with thiol collectors in an electrochemical reaction to form hydrophobic species at the mineral surface (Finkelstein & Goold 1972; Rand & Woods 1984). The sulphide minerals are semiconductors and their interaction with collectors involves transfer of electrons. As such, a potential difference results which is responsible for driving electrons between reacting species (Fuerstenau, Jameson & Yoon, 2007). The magnitude of the potential difference affects the relative energies of charge carriers (electrons) at the mineral/solution interface hence controlling the direction and rate of charge transfer or rate of reaction (Bard & Faulkner, 2001). In a mixed mineral system the mineral/solution interface potentials account for the mixed potential which is critical to the process of flotation (Chander, 2003; Woods, 2003)."

A promising and increasingly popular tailings management strategy is to place cemented tailings underground as backfill. The placement of cemented tailings results in enhanced geotechnical stability and a purportedly more geochemically stable tailings form with lower leaching potential. Conventional subaerial tailings management can negatively affect water quality if weathering causes acid rock drainage and metal leaching (ARD/ML) to occur, whereas cemented tailings can limit leaching via porosity and permeability reductions and contribute alkalinity to limit the potential for ARD/ML. Cemented tailings backfill appears to be better, but how can this advantage be proven? Currently, cemented tailings backfill is utilized at mining operations internationally, but there is limited guidance on performing geochemical characterization and associated evaluation of the potential impacts to water quality. As a result, various approaches to simulating the leaching behavior of cemented backfill have been utilized, including some methods that are unlikely to represent weathering under site-relevant conditions. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Test Method C1308-08 is a diffusion testing method initially developed to assess constituent release rates from solid nuclear waste forms. ASTM C1308-08 uses intact cylinders that more closely represent actual backfill than methods that require crushing or size reduction. It is widely believed that leaching from actual cemented tailings is controlled by diffusion through small pores that exhibit limited exposed surface area, making diffusion testing particularly applicable to cemented tailings placement.

The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

In recent years, a great deal of attention has been focused on developing mill liners to increase wear resistance, improve grinding efficiency and reduce energy consumption in milling applications. The installation of an appropriate mill liner is critical as it affects the overall cost and product quality. A mill liner has two specific functions. The first is to protect the mill shell and mill ends from direct contact with the abrasive grinding media (in this case, the liner serves as a wear surface). The second function is to transport the grinding media, creating energy for size reduction. The liner acts as a lifter, mechanically transporting and cascading the grinding media. The mill lining is a major cost in the milling operation. The costs associated with the mill lining include the capital cost of the lining, downtime required to replace the worn liner and the labor for installation. Generally, in hard rock mining, the life of a mill liner in secondary ball mills is 12 to 24 months.

Author?s note: Diversity in practice exists in the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for purchase price allocations with respect to the recognition of Value Beyond Proven and Probable Reserves or VBPP, as defined by the Emerging Issues Task Force (EITF) in EITF 04-3: ?Mining Assets: Impairment and Business Combinations?. This diversity appears to arise from differing interpretations of what constitutes sufficient information to value components of VBPP in business combinations. Concerned with this diversity in practice, respected members of the mining community formed a working group which prepared an issues paper that discussed this diversity and provided recommendations for recognition and valuation of VBPP in business combinations. The working group then submitted this paper to the EITF, requesting further guidance be issued on the concept of VBPP. In conjunction with the submission to the EITF, the working group also provided this paper to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for review and comment. The EITF discussed this issue at its May, 2008 agenda committee meeting. However, it declined to add this topic to the EITF agenda for further consideration. Absent additional guidance on VBPP from the EITF, the working group submitted a proposed definition of VBPP to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for its consideration. The following article, which is consistent with the issues paper that was submitted to the EITF and the SEC, discusses the components of and valuation techniques for VBPP. The correspondence with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which includes the proposed definition of VBPP by the working group, is attached as Appendix 1 to this article.

THE remarks of Dr. Rathbun in his address of welcome render it unnecessary that I dwell either upon the history or aims of the National Museum, and enable me to proceed at once with a brief descriptive outline of the Department for which I am responsible, and this with particular reference to that division devoted to applied geology. The amount of geological material brought together prior to 1876, under the various Congressional acts quoted, was, though valuable, comparatively small. It consisted mainly of the collections made by Professor J. D. Dana and his assistants during the Wilkes Exploring Expedition; by the various geologists accompanying the surveys of the Pacific railroads in 1854-55; the Surveys West of the 100th Meridian under the direction of the Engineering Corps of the Army; the United States geological surveys under direction of Dr. F. V. Hayden ; and the various Land Office surveys. Prior to 1873 there were no paid assistants to care for these collections. They were studied, if studied at all, by " collabrators," so-called, several of whom had offices and even sleeping apartments in the Smithsonian Institution. In the list of these collaborators are found such names as Conrad, Cope, Gabb, Leidy, Lesquereux, Meek, and Newberry. The building now occupied by the National Museum was designed primarily to make room for the great mass of material secured in 1876 at the close of the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. As completed in 1880, it afforded opportunity for expansion and incidental organization on much more practical basis than had previously existed. This found expression in the creation of numerous departments with salaried officials to take charge of the various collections. With the appointment of Dr. George W. Mineral exploration involves the selective collection, organization, evaluation, and interpretation of geologic and economic data. The sources for such data are original field observations and existing documented information of various types (publications, reports, maps, company files, etc.). As exploration data are accumulated, their storage, organization, indexing, and J retrieval is key to exploration progress. Initial use of computers by mineral exploration groups indicates that data can be meaningfully handled by machines. A computer system makes possible: 1) the storage, manipulation, collation, and selective retrieval of data; 2) the utilization of data banks developed by geologic service groups and available at relatively low cost; and 3) the retrieval of stored data more rapidly, completely, and effectively than by manual systems. Profitable utilization of these capabilities is conditioned by several factors, particularly by the information selected for the system data base and by the design of the computer system itself.

The tests described herein were made in the course of a series of experiments on coal-mine ventilation factors which the Bureau of Mines has beep; conducting for the past two years at its experimental mine near Bruceton, Pa. The object of the present tests was to determine the leakage of two air locks which had been placed in the experimental mine as hart of the equipment for tests on friction factors. Position of the Doors. The first or inner lock gas across the aircourse between No. 1 and No. 2 left butt entries, and forced the air through these butts. An air-measuring suction in No. 1 butt determined tae volume passing at tent point.

The Golden Cross project was a joint venture between Coeur NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company (20 per cent). The site is located in the Waitekauri Valley, 8 km north-west of Waihi, on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the North Island. The mine-site is situated close to the Coromandel Range Divide between the headwaters of the Waitekauri River and the Martoto Stream. The site has a history of Gold Mining dating back to 1892. The more recent mine comprised an open pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998, MacGillivray, Maton and Goldstone (2000).Doug Hood Ltd commenced the first of three contracts on site in September 1997 and was responsible for completing the final stages of open pit mining, landslide remedial works mine closure and rehabilitation works. The Mill Closure and Rehabilitation and Drainage Works contract, for which this submission relates, commenced in September 1999 and was officially completed by Doug Hood Ltd. on the 26 May 2001.This paper endeavours to highlight the project objectives and backgrounds them against the difficulties experienced with respect to the site-specific conditions, the design complexities and risks associated with the contract, from a contractorÆs perspective.

Strip mining in Western Canada, though of considerable importance, is a fairly recent development for many of the operators in the district. Adding to the difficulty of unfamiliarity is the fact that a great deal of the stripping is done on pitching seams, for which the engineering and economic principles of setting the most advantageous strip ratio are not readily apparent. The novelty of the operation combined with the complexity of the principles involved can easily lead to misconceptions as to the determination of the economic ratio. Definition of Strip Ration There are two commonly accepted meanings of the term strip ratio: (1) The ratio of feet of overburden to be stripped per foot of coal recoverable. (2) The ratio of cubic yards of overburden per cubic yard or ton of coal. The first definition is inapplicable to pitching seams so, throughout this paper, strip ratio will be taken as the ratio of cubic yards of overburden to be removed per cubic yard of coal recoverable. Economic Ratio In the case of flat seams, the strip ratio is fixed by existing natural conditions, and the magnitude of this ratio determines whether stripping is economically feasible. With pitching seams, however, the strip ratio is a variable. On the outcrop, there is usually some coal which can be obtained with little or no stripping. As the work is carried down the pitch of the coal seam, the proportion of overburden continually increases until a point is reached where it is no longer economical to continue the operation. The question immediately arises as to the location of this point, and this resolves into the problem of determining the most favourable strip ratio, or, to use the accepted term, the economic ratio.

"The development and industrial applications of magnetic liners have been around for decades. A Swedish company SKEGA first introduced the rubber magnetic liner, and then followed by the Chinese metal magnetic liners. Traditionally, both liners were used in secondary and regrind ball mills, especially for ores containing magnetic materials. Mostly steel balls or equivalent forged balls, usually below 60 mm in diameter, were used as grinding media. With the development of mineral resources over the years, SAG mills and larger ball mills have become the dominating components for comminution circuit design globally. Due to the larger ball mills and thus larger grinding balls (up to 80 mm) especially in non-ferrous metal industry, the application of magnetic liners has been very limited. Based on the new development of materials, the HMR Group Limited has been exploring new designs of magnetic liners which led to the invention of the Nano Steel Magnetic Liner (NSML). Recently, NSML had a successful application in a 5.5m x 6.5m ball mill with 80 mm balls at the Erdenet Copper Mine in Mongolia. Although the first set of liner had a service life of 12 months, the design of the second set was modified and improved to accommodate the operating conditions, which is expected to reach least 24 months service life. The original manganese steel liner only had about 8 months liner life.1. IntroductionMineral processing is an essential operation for the development and utilization of mineral resources. The effective concentration of various useful minerals depends on sufficient liberation of the mineral particles in the ore. The crushing and grinding process such as ball milling are the most common way to achieve proper liberation size. Mill liner is an eternal topic for the operations, not only because it protects the equipment, but also affects the mill grinding efficiency and availability. In recent years, magnetic mill liners have been developed that can easily meet the production targets with numerous benefits, such as zero maintenance, reducing specific energy consumption and improving grinding efficiency."

With the consolidation of the copper industry in the second half of the 20th century resulting in fewer plants treating ever increasing quantities and qualities of feed, the enormous flexibility of the Noranda Process gives it significant advantages over many competing technologies for the production of matte. Toll smelting, recycling, and secondaries treatment will become the cornerstone of profitable operations for all but the lucky few who have large captive mines associated with the smelter. Consequently, the ability to respond to changing market conditions without significant metallurgical or operational upsets will be of considerable commercial advantage. The inherent stability of this bath-smelting process leads to tight matte grade control, while the bath turbulence leads to rapid consumption of feeds with widely varying physical characteristics. Low capital and operating costs combined with a layout suitable for retrofit into existing converter aisles makes it a sensible choice for parts of the world still experiencing the aforementioned consolidation, which is essentially complete in fully developed economies such as the United States of America and the European Union. This paper will discuss features of the Noranda process compared with other technologies and its place in the future global copper production industry, which is set to become increasingly competitive and aggressive.

Engineers have long recognized the desirability of correlating the data obtained from small-scale slime-scttling tests with commercial work as carried on in large tanks. This need, though most apparent in designing new installations, frequently arises also in existent plants, since a large range of experimental work can be performed without interfering with regular operation. General Settling Phenomena In order to develop rational methods of laboratory testing, it becomes necessary to study the general phenomena of settling. Since it was desired to give the public the benefit of these methods at as early a date as possible, together with the knowledge of the general principles of slime settling necessary for a clear understanding of the laboratory tests, we have ventured to discuss the subject in so far as brought out by the work which we now have under way. We realize that certain of our preliminary conclusions may be subject to modification, but it seems probable that, with but few exceptions, the general laws enunciated will cover the settling behavior of all pulps encountered in metallurgical plants. However, it must be recognized that there is still a vast amount of work to be done upon certain phases of the subject; therefore, at this time we will attempt only a discussion of the behavior of ore pulps during the process of settling or dewatering, under certain given conditions. During blasting, stress waves propagate through a rock mass, inducing stress and strain changes. This applied deformation affects intact rock, existing discontinuities, mine excavations, and engineered structures in the proximity of the blast. Traditionally in blasting, stress waves are quantified in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV) or peak particle acceleration (PPA), based on the method of measurement and the specified allowable tolerances. During analysis, the peak particle motion is coupled with an explosive source through various scaling laws to develop rock-specific attenuation relationships. Some studies have expanded this practice to the development of damage threshold values based on measured or predicted peak particle velocities. PPV-related thresholds are generally based on empirical models, where observation of overbreak, cracking, or fall-off are used to quantify damage. This method is often paired with the application of elastic plane wave equations to calculate the blast induced strain or the PPV threshold for tensile rock failure. Other factors that must be viewed critically in such models are the methods used to collect and analyse blast vibration data and the application of inappropriate vibration attenuation relationships.

"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECT OF EXPERIMENTAn explosion in and rupture of a gas-tight switch box on an electric loader in a mine located near Pittsburgh indicated that the cause was an internally generated inflammable gas-air mixture. This led to the suspicion that moisture condensation or ""other unusual conditions might have caused a spark or are across the surface of the material and that the heat may have created a carbonized path across the synthetic plastic base which would then conduct a large current with the generation of considerable heat and thermal decomposition of the base materials base in the box which exploded gave every indication that this series of events had taken place, and accordingly it was desired to determine what explosive gases such a decomposition of these insulating materials would produce.ACKNOWNLEDGMENTSThe desirability of making this investigation was suggested to the authors by L. "Since being reported to the 2012 UMI in Shanghai, the Cook Islands has been steadily developing for the commencement of it Seabed Minerals sector in its large Exclusive Economic Zone which contain a vast and unique Manganese Nodule resource, estimated at 10 billion tonnes1. At the 2013 UMI in Brazil, it was reported that the Seabed Minerals Act had commenced and all the necessary complex Technical aspects of this developmental work was being undertaken. At the 2014 UMI in Portugal, full details of the final developments leading to the opening of the Tender of Exploration Blocks in the Cook Islands EEZ will be presented in a brief but comprehensive method, using Poster displays, Powerpoint and active Website interaction. This will show the drafted Regulations, prepared on best international standards, to address both Licencing and Environmental requirements, to give clarity and security to the Resources Owner, industry and stakeholders. This work in being coordinated by the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority, with the valuable collaboration of many international, regional and national stakeholders, including the Cook Islands NGOs, Marine Resources, Marine Park and National Environment Service."
