The Palaeoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the northern Cape Province of South Africa hosts high grade (>60 per cent Fe) hematitic and specularitic iron and manganese mineralisation. The mineralisation is primarily exposed along the western margin or in the central part of a major interference fold structure known as the Maremane dome. The bulk of South AfricaÆs iron ore production is currently provided by two active mines, Kumba Resources megaton Sishen iron ore mine on the northern end of the dome, and the smaller Assmang Beeshoek mine on the southern closure. The undeveloped Sishen South deposit, which contains ~400 Mt of high-grade hematite ore, is located approximately 9 km towards the southwest of Postmasburg. It forms a linear extension of the Beeshoek mine and as such contains comparable laminated, breccia and conglomeratic iron mineralisation. The Transvaal Supergroup sediments were deposited in two distinct fault-controlled basins on the Archean Kaapvaal craton. Basement rocks in the western Griqualand West basin are formed by a carbonate platform sequence (Campbellrand Subgroup), which is overlain by a thick sequence of banded iron formation of the Asbesheuwels Subgroup. A major unconformity separates these rocks from the red-bed Gamagara Formation, which is correlated with the base of the Olifantshoek Supergroup. Diamictites and lavas of the Postmasburg Group have been thrust over these units from the west. The mineralisation process is related to regional scale supergene iron enrichment of Kuruman banded iron formations along the unconformity. During regional tectonism associated with the Kheis orogeny (2400 - 1700 Ma) the Maremane dome was uplifted, and the basal dolomite units thus exposed to erosion and karstification. The overlying banded iron formations collapsed into karst sinkhole structures where leaching of silica and enrichment of hematite occurred. Although the exact mechanism of the mineralising process remains unclear, karstification preserved components of the original concordant laminated and massive ores. These ores were subsequently eroded and deposited as conglomeratic and gritty ores down-dip of the Maremane dome in alluvial fan systems. A thin veneer of recent calcrete or Tertiary Kalahari clay beds masks the subsurface geology and most of the orebodies, thus ground geophysical gravity surveys proved excellent exploration tools to penetrate the surficial cover. These surveys were used extensively for delineation drilling and to deduce the subsurface geology and structural development of the area. Finally Sishen South orebodies were modelled with ModelVision software in an attempt to obtain an exploration template for the surrounding area.

In 1989 The First Brigade for Geology and Mineral Exploration of Qinghai Province discovered gold at Jinlonggou and Qinlongtan, Tanjianshan. Between 1992 and 2002 small scale mining was carried out at these sites using underground mining methods at Jinlonggou and an open pit at Qinlongtan. During 2003 and 2004 geotechnical investigations were carried out in support of a bankable feasibility study. An important objective of this investigation was to meet both internationally accepted standards and codes of practice, and also to satisfy the Chinese requirements. Extensive use of local experience was utilised. Where possible geological drilling information was incorporated into the assessment. Extensive geotechnical mapping of surface and underground exposures, and index testing to gain an appreciation of rock intact strength were used to characterise the sites. Rock mass classification (MRMR) was used to assess indicative overall slope angles and appropriate bench stack heights for the proposed pits at Jinlonggou and Qinlongtan. Measured discontinuity orientations were used in kinematic analysis to assess stability of possible pit slope geometry at a batter and overall scale to provide preliminary recommendations for the pit slope configuration. Numerical modelling was also carried out to improve the understanding of anticipated pit behaviour. Site investigation and preliminary geotechnical design details, that incorporate site specific conditions for the formation of open pits at Tanjianshan, are discussed in this paper.

The importance of goethite to Australian iron ore production is steadily increasing as the proportion of goethite-rich, martite-goethite bedded and channel iron deposits increases at the expense of declining production from high-grade microplaty hematite deposits. For this reason, an improved understanding of goethite in iron deposits, its genesis, goethite types and their physical and metallurgical properties is vital to maintaining optimum sintering and blast furnace performance in Asian steel mills.The terminology used to describe goethite in Australian iron deposits is currently highly variable. The discredited mineral name ‘limonite’ is still in widespread use as a field term for goethite and there are many misconceptions concerning goethite chemical grade and downstream physical and metallurgical properties. The goethite classification proposed here is based on geological and physical properties from which three types are recognised including brown goethite, dark brown-black vitreous goethite and highly microporous, friable yellow ochreous goethite.In practice, typical vitreous goethite with highly reflective surfaces and conchoidal fracturing, characteristic of the hard cap zone appears from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and electron microprobe analysis to be significantly higher in Si (up to 18.7 wt per cent), Al (up to 3.5 wt per cent) and S (up to 0.14 wt per cent) compared to the generally very low (<1 wt per cent for Si and Al) levels of these elements in ochreous goethite and brown goethite. The data dispels the common misconception that friable earthy or yellow ochreous goethite is high in Al and Si and other chemical impurities. However, P was found to be consistently higher (mean of 0.112 wt per cent and up to 0.296 wt per cent) in ochreous goethite than brown goethite (mean of 0.011 wt per cent) or vitreous goethite (mean of 0.031 wt per cent). The highly porous microstructure of ochreous goethite is thought to have a much higher surface area, which may aid in preferential adsorption of P onto the ochreous goethite mineral surface.CITATION:Manuel, J R and Clout, J M F, 2017. On Nov. 13, 1985, Colombia's Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people and burying several villages. Damages were estimated to be about $US300 million. The following is an account by SME member Antonio Rivera of the volcanic activity that led to the eruption. His account also includes a description of the geography and some geology of the affected area. Mining operations in the area were mostly unaffected, although some operations were forced to close until the roads leading to them could be repaired. Introduction The Ruiz volcano is located on the Central Cordillera of Colombia about 28 km (17 miles) southeast of Manizales, the capital of the state of Caldas. Ruiz is one of nine volcanoes that form a complex volcanic chain within the middle portion of the Central Cordillera. The Cordillera has 30 other volcanoes in the southern part of Colombia. Ruiz volcano Ruiz's elevation is 5200 m (17,060 ft). It is covered by an ice cap estimated to be 20 m (66 ft) thick at its summit, an area that covers 17 km2 (6.5 sq miles). Drainage is composed of several rivers that flow into the Magdalena River on the east and Cauca River on the west. The rivers flowing to the east are Guali, Azufrado, Lagunillas, and Recio. The rivers that flow to the west are Claro, Molinos, and Chinchina. There is a road from Manizales to El Refugio, a ski area located on the northeast flank of the volcano at 4800 m (15,750 ft) in elevation. The Ruiz volcanic complex was built in two stages. The first is a shield type of volcano (mainly lavas) formed about a million years ago. The second is a younger stratovolcano overlaying the ancient one. It consists of lavas and pyroclastics and was built over the past 500,000 years. Twenty-four eruptions of Ruiz are known to have occurred during the last 14,000 years. Its products mainly consist of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudflows (lahars), and directed lateral explosions. Historic eruptive record 1595 - Debris avalanche, blast, pyroclastic flows, mudflows, ash flows, and ash fall. 1828-1829 - Ashes (phreatic). 1831-1833 - Gas emissions and ashes. 1845 - Mudflows and pyroclastic flows. 1985 - Sept. 11- Fumarolic activity, phreatic eruption, ash fall, and small mudflows. 1985 - Nov. 13 - Ash and pyroclastic fall, major destructive mudflows (magmato-phreatic eruption). From 1845 through 1984, Ruiz volcano always had a slight fumarolic activity. It was restricted to the crater area. In November and December 1984, the fumarolic activity increased and the first ash emission and vapor-sulfur formation started. Small local earthquakes accompanied these volcanic activities. The volcano had a small erup¬tion on Sept. 11, 1985. It was manifested by phreatic explosions that ejected fragments of the vent and formed ash deposits 25 mm (1 in.) thick around an area 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the crater. Fine material was blown by the wind and reached Manizales and neighboring areas, producing a small layer of ash up to 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick.

Overhand cut-and-fill mining of narrow vein orebodies inevitably leads to the creation of horizontal pillars. As the thickness of the overlying crown pillar diminishes, stresses build up in the pillar. More often than not, this situation causes an increased level of seismicity and possible pillar burst. One well-known strategy to reduce the hazard of crown and sill pillar burst in cut-and-fill vein mining is that of destress blasting. The paper first reviews the methods used for the monitoring and assessment of potential pillar burst in narrow vein cut-and-fill mining. The influence of horizontal stress, mine depth and pillar thickness on stress build-up in the crown pillar is examined through a characteristic narrow vein numerical model. The paper then presents, with reference to three mine case studies, the benefits of destress blasting and the factors affecting its success as a ground control technique.

Stimulated by current $0.80 to $1.20 per pound price tag of copper, considerable interest and activity have been generated in the copper mining camps throughout the world, and especially in the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico copper belt. Under these economically favorable conditions, many of the marginal oxide-copper deposits, as well as newly discovered prospects, are under scrutiny for possible exploitation. For both the known deposits and new prospects, the big question facing the mine operator is the selection of the best method for processing these economically attractive oxide-copper deposits. Several variations of the hydrometallurgical processes are currently available for treating oxide-copper ores which can be mined by the open-pit method. Basically, these processes involve preparing the ore for application of an acid solution, applying the solution to the ore, and recovery of the metal from the pregnant solution. Dump leaching, heap leaching, vat leaching, agitation leaching and, in more recent times, in situ leaching or solution mining in combination with well established cementation process or the newly developed solvent extraction-electrowinning system have all been employed or have been investigated for the recovery of copper from oxide ores. Of these processes, dump, heap and vat leaching have been successfully practiced for treating oxide-copper ores. Agitation leaching is a relatively newcomer and has been adopted from the experiences of uranium and gold processing. Finally, the inplace leaching technique is the latest process to be suggested for possible treatment of oxide-copper ores.

For the past 40 years, underground trucking using diesel powered or electric wheel driven vehicles, either conversions of surface trucks, or purpose built, has been the preferred means of ore and waste transport in underground mining. The relatively low capital cost, flexibility and requirement for minimal infrastructure means that trucking systems are selected in the early stages of a mining operation. An increase in the carrying capacity of trucking systems with dimensions to operate within existing development excavations is the solution to long term ore and waste underground haulage systems using trucks. The next generation of underground trucks will be low profile articulated trucks with carrying capacities up to 60 t.

In recent years there has been a major change among mining companies in their mining methods. This has been driven by the need to increase shareholder value and optimising the value from an operation. With this understanding there has been a need for all producers to become more efficient in their mining processes. An analysis of the coal losses at Mount Thorley Operations indicated that the major losses were in the dragline section of the mine due to coal damage from throw blasting. This damage was evident after the removal of the overburden by the dragline.Coal and Allied Mount Thorley Mine in partnership with Orica Explosives developed a process to reduce the coal loss associated with the throw blasting of Mt Thorley. Orica provided its specialised knowledge and experience in the drilling and blasting area and combined this with the local mining knowledge and expertise of Mount Thorley Operations personnel to conduct the project. This partnership reduced coal loss in excess of 50 per cent whilst maintaining targeted dragline productivity.

The liquidus curve of the Mg-Pb system was accurately redetermined. The compound Mg2Pb decomposes peritectically at 538.2° ± 0.3°C to liquid and to a compound p' which melts congruently at 35.0 at. pct Pb and 549.0° ± 0.3°C. The solidus curve of ß' was determined. X-ray diffraction studies indicate that 4' has an orthorhombic structure. Activity values of magnesium calculated from the phase diagram agree with those published in the literature. EXPERIMENTAL thermodynamic properties of binary metallic systems have to be consistent with values calculated from the phase diagram. In systems forming intermetallic compounds the shape of the liquidus curve near a compound is determined by the thermodynamic properties of the coexisting solid and liquid phases. Hauffe and Wagner' neglected the temperature dependence of the chemical potentials and obtained the potential differences of the components of the liquid alloys, relative to stoichiometric liquid. Their calculations were based on the liquidus curve and on the heat of fusion of the compound, and were only valid near the congruent melting point. Steiner, Miller, and Komarek2 developed equations which account for the temperature dependence and obtained the chemical potentials of liquid Mg-Sn alloys over the entire phase diagram from the liquidus and solidus curves and from enthalpy values with the pure components as the standard states. The Mg-Pb phase diagram has been studied by several investigators whose results have been compiled and critically evaluated by Hansen.3 Although the liquidus curve was poorly defined, the general features of the diagram, i.e., one congruent melting compound, Mg2Pb, of essentially stoichiometric composition, two eutectics, and limited terminal solid solubilities, seemed to be suitable for a similar thermodynamic analysis. A careful redeter-mination of the liquidus by thermal analysis revealed, however, the existence of another compound. The liquidus curve between the two eutectics was precisely delineated and the structure and solidus curve of the new compound were investigated. The revised phase diagram was thermodynamic ally analyzed to evaluate the activity of magnesium in the liquid alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The magnesium metal (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) had a purity of 99.99+ pct; lead (American Smelting and Refining Co.) contained 99.999 pct Pb. Most experiments were carried out in graphite crucibles. Several experiments were made in high-purity alumina (Triangle R.R., Mor-ganite, Inc.) and in Armco iron crucibles to test the inertness of the graphite crucibles. Chemical analysis of magnesium and detailed description of the procedure for thermal analysis have been given previously. For the determination of the solidus curve of the compounds, specimens of initial composition Mg2Pb were equilibrated in a closed isothermal system with magnesium vapor. The source of the magnesium vapor was an alloy which had a gross composition lying in the 0' + L field at the temperature of equilibration. As equilibrium was approached, the specimens lost magnesium to the two-phase reservoir thereby lowering the activity of magnesium in the specimens until activity and composition equaled that of the ß'/ß' + L boundary. Crucibles (1.9 cm ID by 2.2 cm OD by 4.1 cm high) and tightly fitting lids were machined from a molybdenum rod; small, shallow trays were fashioned from thin (0.005 in.) molybdenum sheet, and all the molybdenum components were degreased in hot carbon tetrachloride and then dried. The pieces were then degassed in vacuum at 950°C for about 6 hr. The two-phase alloy was placed at the bottom of the crucible and small specimens of the Mg2Pb compound, weighed on an analytical balance, were placed in two molybdenum trays above the two-phase alloy. The crucible was closed by forcing its lid on and then inserted in a titanium crucible. This crucible was evacuated, flushed twice with argon, and welded under argon. The specimens were equilibrated for about 1 week in a resistance furnace regulated by a Celectray controller, and the runs were terminated by water quenching. The specimens were again weighed and the equilibrium compositions were calculated on the basis that the weight losses were solely due to a loss of magnesium to the two-phase alloy. The structure of the B' phase was investigated by the Debye-Scherrer X-ray diffraction technique. Granulation of the iron ore blend and the additives is the foremost step in the agglomeration of iron ore fines to achieve a permeable bed during sintering, which is crucial for sinter productivity. This study investigated the granulation of four types of blends to determine the impact of granulation on bed permeability. The blends were granulated in a rotating drum at various moisture contents and their JPU permeability was measured at each moisture content in a permeability pot (diameter 95 mm and height 500 mm) at various flow rates. Several independent experiments were carried out to investigate the changes in permeability when mixtures of different particle size range (-1 mm and +1 mm) were introduced into a packed bed with a larger particle size range (-6.3 mm to +4.0 mm). The results revealed that the addition of particles in the -1 mm size range had a more pronounced negative impact on permeability compared to particles in the +1 mm size range. This can be attributed to the relatively higher energy losses (mainly inertial) associated with the presence of -1 mm particles in the mixture. The findings were used to quantify the granulation process based on the -1 mm particle size fraction in the granulated mix and their utilisation (denoted by UI-1 mm). For achieving optimal permeability in a specific blend, it was found that a UI-1 mm (utility index of -1 mm particle size) ranging from 0.82 to 0.92 was required. However, exceeding a UI-1 mm value of 0.95 resulted in weaker granules prone to deformation and led to decreased bed permeability. The study also showed that the UI-1 mm was highly dependent on the water addition per kg of -1 mm in dry feed and suggested adding ~80 to 110 mL of water per kg of -1 mm in dry feed to attain the best possible permeability. Additionally, the research proposed a mechanism involving the melting of granules at high temperatures and highlighted the influence of -1 mm particles on bed permeability during the sintering process.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making; and (3) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation. This is the second7j of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. This report covers Indiana County, Pa., which comprises parts of the Smicksburg, Punxsutawney, Elders Ridge, Indiana, Barnesboro, Latrobe, New Florence, and Johnstown Quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each Quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

Gravitational field anomalies have been observed over many igneous intrusives of medium (4000 km2) to small (100 km2) size in outcrop area. These studies give good results because the residual anomalies can be separated from larger scale crustal anomalies and density contrasts usually are present. Although unique solutions are not possible, the analysis of the gravity anomalies can put limits upon the geologic interpretation of such bodies. Three examples in Montana, U. S. A. are discussed: (1) the Boulder Batholith, a late Cretaceous quartz monzonite series of intrusives of 4000 km2 outcrop area; (2) the Little Rocky Mountains, an up-domed area, in which an Eocene porphyry (130 km2) has intruded the Precambrian crystallines and lower Cambrian sediments; and (3) the Crazy Mountains, an Eocene diorite (100 km2), which has intruded the Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments. In both the Boulder Batholith and the Little Rocky Mountains, intrusive rocks are less dense than the surrounding rocks and negative anomalies are found (40 and 28 mgal, resp.). In the Crazy Mountains, the intrusive is more dense than the surrounding sediments and a sharp positive residual anomaly of 42 mgal is observed. The analyses of the gravity anomalies predict that: (1) the thickness of the Boulder Batholith is on the order of 10 to 15 kms and is concave upward; (2) the Little Rocky Mountain syenite is not a simple laccolith, but is T-shaped and extends in depth to about 16 kms; (3) the Crazy Mountain diorite is not a simple small scale series of stocks, but a large connected body extending in depth 5 kms to the basement (although nothing can be said of it within the basement because there is little density contrast). The analyses of the anomalies place important limits on both the areal and depth extent of the intrusive bodies. Of all possible geophysical techniques, gravity studies offer the most promise in the determination of the shape in depth of intrusive bodies.

The paper discusses the legislative and practical approach adopted to problems of management of environment in relation to coal mining in a very sensitive area of the south coast of New South Wales. The environmental problems are complicated in this area due to multiple and very often conflicting land usages. The environmental approach in relation to water quality maintenance, noise control and air quality is discussed and methods adopted meet stringent requirements. Requirements of New South Wales Regulations on Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) are described.

The use of friction dampers are wide proposed for a variety of mechanical systems for which it is not possible to apply viscoelastic materials, fluid based dampers or others viscous dampers. An important example is the application of friction dampers in aircraft engines to reduce the blades vibration amplitudes. In most cases, friction dampers have been studied in a passive way, however, a significant improvement can be achieved by controlling the normal force in the contact region. The aim of this paper is to study four control strategies for friction dampers based on three different hysteresis cycles. The first control strategy maximizes the energy removal in each harmonic oscillation cycle, by calculating the optimum normal force based on the last displacement peak. The second control strategy combines the first one with the maximum energy removal strategy used in the smart spring devices. Finally, is presented the strategy which homogenously modulates the friction force. Numerical studies were performed with these four strategies defining the performance metrics. The best control strategy was applied experimentally. The experimental test rig was fully identified and its parameters were used for numerical simulations. The obtained results have shown the good performance for the friction damper and selected strategy, also, the agreement between numerical and experimental results.

The Ute-Ulay project area is located approximately five miles west of Lake City, in Hinsdale County, Colorado. The Ute-Ulay Mine site is approximately one mile east of the project area. The elevation of the site is 9,200 feet and is adjacent to Henson Creek (Figure 1) [ ] The Ute-Ulay Mining complex is an inactive gold, silver, and zinc mining/milling operation, that operated from the 1880?s until the 1970?s, and sporadically into the late 1990?s. The mining complex comprises several levels of underground mines, a flotation mill, and an abandoned town site. Due to the narrow, steep sided canyon, milled tailings were pumped upstream one mile in a sluice box to a wider section of the canyon, and deposited into five tailings impoundments and one berm located between the impoundments. An estimated 9,000 cubic yards (yd3) of fine grained tailings were located in the impoundments adjacent to the creek. The Ute-Ulay project area consisted of the mill tailings impoundments located upstream from the historic mine.

Coal mine bounces and bursts are major problems facing U.S. mine operators. Bounces and bursts have the potential to inflict severe injury on mining personnel, damage equipment, and cause mine closures. High- stress conditions, at or near the working face, are the common denominator in the burst problem, If mine operators can locate high-stress and potentially burst-prone zones, they can then use stress-relief methods to control the burst condition. One method of locating the high-stress zone is the probe-hole-drilling or drilling-yield method. Probe-hole drilling is used frequently in Europe, the U.S.S.R., and Japan as a means for locating potential burst zones. Consequently, the Bureau of Nines performed tests in the laboratory and in a deep, burst-prone western mine to analyze probe-hole drilling. The in-mine method, very simply, involves drilling a hole into the coal seam and measuring the volume of cuttings obtained. A certain volume of cuttings can be expected from a certain diameter and length drill hole. A significant increase in the volume of cuttings means the zone around that particular hole is highly stressed. In-mine use of the drilling yield method has shown it to be a useful tool for locating highly stressed and potential burst zones. Results from laboratory testing confirm that high stress applied tri-axially to a cube specimen will cause a significant increase in the volume of cuttings from a small-diameter drill hole in the specimen.

The action of mercury on stressed brass to produce cracks was known before Moore, Beckinsale and Mallinson1 showed that actual season cracking did not occur spontaneously but could be induced by ammonia. These investigators studied other substances, including diphenylamine, without finding that anything other than ammonia could cause season cracking Grimston2 reported season cracking in cartridge cases stored in wooden boxes wetted with dilute sulphuric acid pickling solution. Season cracking associated with sulphur dioxide, water vapor and air has been reported by Johnston,3 although he reported that trimethylamine and pyridine did not cause cracking. Jevons4 has ascribed season cracking of brass in certain instances to trimethylamine, "aldehyde amine," "ketone amine" and pyridine, but no experimental work was done evidently to prove this definitely. Pyridine was investigated by Morris,5 who found it to have considerable cracking power. In the present investigation, the object was a qualitative evaluation of a number of representative amines with respect to their ability to cause season cracking. Thus it was desired only that an appreciable vapor pressure of each amine be obtained in order to make the test as severe as possible, without attempting to test equivalent concentrations for comparative purposes. MEthods Specimens TWO types of specimen were used: 1. Unannealed 70-30 brass CUPs formed from 0.040-in. thick sheet. Height of cup Was 13/8 in. and diameter was 17/8 inches. 2. First draw pieces of caliber .50 cartridge cases in the unannealed condition (70-30 brass)- The cups were representative of a thin wall and thin base specimen, whereas the draw pieces have a thick base (1/4 in.) and a thick wall (approximately 3/32 in.). Both types of specimens contained high residual stress and cracked in less than one minute in a solution of I per cent mercurous nitrate and I per cent nitric acid provided that this was receded by a 30-sec. pickle in 40 per cent nitric acid. Specimens were prepared as follows: (1) degreased in trichlorethylene, (2) rinsed in H2O, (3) pickled 5 min. in 10 per cent by volume H2SO4 (1.84 SP. gr.), (4) rinsed in H2O, and (5) dried. Amirtes Tested In selecting the amines, representatives of the three series of amines, and one series of substituted amines were chosen. The aliphatic series was represented by the methyl and ethyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines. These are the simplest aliphatic amines. For the aromatic series, the phenyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines were selected as being the simplest. The heterocyclic series was represented by pyridine, which is a simple heterocyclic base (tertiary amine).

"The cost of deep underground mine cooling depends on a number of geological, environmental and economic factors such as the temperature gradient in the mine, the outside air temperature, and the local price of energy. While geological factors, being static, can be controlled to some extent during the mine design, the environmental and economic factors dynamically change and therefore can only be controlled through a flexible mine ventilation system.With an average temperature gradient of 20–25°C/km, the virgin rock temperature at 2,000 m can reach 45–60°C. Conventional cooling at such depths could lead to exorbitantly high costs. In-mine geothermal heat pumps can considerably reduce the cost of cooling through energy communication with the centralized absorption chillers, which service the mine from the surface.It is shown that in-mine heat pump systems can be a viable option for reducing operating expenses and providing some degree of flexibility to cope with fluctuating energy costs. The price of Natural gas and electrify are the most important variables for optimizing the level of interaction between the surface and inmine cooling systems. Deep mine waters can be used to carry a portion of the mine heat to the surface, where the heat from mine can be used as a supplementary energy source for absorption chillers. As an extra benefit, the heat output of the chillers can be used for district heating and or greenhouse growing.The case of cooling deep levels of deep mines in Sudbury Canada (e.g. Creighton Mine) has been discussed. It is shown that an initial 1MW in-mine geothermal heat pump system can save significantly on the cost of cooling. Such a demonstration project will allow R&D on viability of larger similar systems to be incrementally added in the future.INTRODUCTIONThe amount of heat generated in deep and ultra-deep mines depend primarily on the regional temperature gradient and the thermal conductivity of mine rocks. The conductive heat flow is quantifiable and can be minimized or optimized in the process of mine design. Another important heat source can be related to underground equipment such as diesel machinery which often have low efficiencies (approximately 25–35%). This heat source can be controlled and reduced though improving efficiencies or using electrical equipment, which offer a much better efficiency (approximately 80–90%). Mine waters can also be a significant heat source (convectively bringing large amounts of heat into the mine workings)."

T HE Tonopah Extension assay office is a two- story, concrete structure on a solid foundation of andesite, situated about 100 yd. from the company's mill, so that it will not be affected by the stamps or the tube-mills; also it will not be affected by under- ground blasting. On the second floor are the mine superintendent's office and drafting and blueprint rooms. On the ground floor are the assayer's office,' mixing room, furnace room, crusher room, chemical laboratory, parting room, store room, and change and shower room for the mine superintendent, assayers, and engineers. The crusher room is outside of the main building, and has four concrete walls, thus eliminating the jar of the crusher; it is so situated that the least possible amount of dust spreads through the main building. An 8 by 10-in. jaw crusher, which crushes to ¼ in., was made by a local foundry. Attached to the top is a small galvanized-iron hopper covered with a ¼ in. screen, on to which the sample is dumped. The fines-pass through the screen into the hopper, while the oversize is dumped into the crusher. The crushed sample and fines from the screen drop down to a set .of splits suspended from an iron rod below the crusher jaws. The small sample is caught below in a small pulp pan. The rejects drop from the splits through a 2-in. pipe on to a bucket conveyor, which dumps into a galvanized-iron hopper in an upper corner of the room. The rejects drop through a 2-in. pipe to a reject bin outside the build- ing. This bin is constructed high enough for a truck to be loaded from it by means of a chute door on the side.

MAJOR considerations in the production of stainless steel are the utilization of stainless steel scrap and the recovery of chromium and other metallic values from the initial furnace charge. The decarburization of a bath of molten chromium steel with gaseous oxygen is usually accompanied by a considerable amount of metallic oxidation. Since recovery of this metal from the slag may require substantial expenditures of time and materials for slag reduction, holding metallic oxidation to the minimum consistent with good operating practice is generally desirable. The important role of temperature in minimizing metallic oxidation is illustrated by Fig. 1, taken from the results of Hilty, Healy, and Crafts,' who established the quantitative relations connecting the amounts of chromium, manganese, and iron oxidized during the oxidizing period of chromium steel heats with the composition of the initial charge and the temperature and composition of the molten bath after oxidation. Higher temperatures after the oxygen blow result in lower metallic oxidation. Although high temperatures are desirable for minimizing metallic oxidation, practical operating considerations limit the degree to which they can be employed. Excessively high temperatures or prolonged operation at moderately high temperatures may cause serious damage to the furnace refractories, so that a compromise must be effected. The problem, therefore, is one of controlling the oxidizing period of chromium steel heats to the shortest time at the highest practical temperature. The most effective tool the steel melter has for attaining high temperature while decarburizing a chromium steel heat is now commonly considered to be the oxygen lance with an adequate supply of gaseous oxygen. In order for the tool to be effective, however, the heat resulting from the oxidation of carbon, chromium, silicon, manganese, and iron in the bath must exceed the heat losses from the furnace. General recognition, of this principle has stimulated a trend toward faster injection of oxygen. For example, Pachaly2 proposed a high temperature at the start of the oxygen blow or a high rate of oxygen input as a means of obtaining the desired carbon level with high chromium recovery. On the other hand, limited understanding of the specific effects of oxygen input rate has hampered development of optimum practices. As part of a broad study of the metallurgy of chromium steel melting, therefore, the Linde Air Products Co. and the Electro Metallurgical Co. at their Metals Research Labo-ratories have evaluated the heat-balance during the oxidizing period in terms of oxygen input rate.
