This paper on methods and costs of mining and milling iron ore at the Iron Mountain mine of Ozark Ore Co., St, Francois County, Mo., is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports on methods, practices, and costs of mining and milling throughout the United States. The Iron Mountain operation is notable for its successful transition from open-pit to underground mining, for use underground of large earth-moving equipment, and for development of a multilevel room-and-pillar mining method. In this two-year study, an evaluation of mining and reclamation practices at 159 randomly sampled surface coal mines in the United States was conducted. It is concluded that reclamation practices in most of the 22 coal-producing states were adequate during 1975, but that improvement in reclamation performance was desirable in the acid area of the central U. S. and in mountainous southwestern Virginia. Productivity improvements should result from research to determine efficient or optimal operating procedures for dragline stripping of single and multiple seams, surface mining of lignite, multicut and multiseam haulback mining on steep slopes, mountaintop removal, and surface mining in swampy or deeply glaciated areas. Specific candidate research projects are discussed in this report.

GOOD ventilation is recognized as an essential for the preservation of health, and laws have accordingly been framed in many countries for the provision of adequate ventilation in factories and places of public resort as well as in mines.Apart from the legislative enforcement of hygienic measures as a matter of public 'policy, the ventilation of mines has an important economic aspect, since it affects to a large extent the industrial efficiency of the workmen, and consequently the cost of mineral production. Until recent years the ventilation of metal mines has not generally received much consideration, and the importance of pure air has been sometimes overlooked. To the absence of explosive gases in such mines, and to the cost of the installation and working of mechanical ventilators, may generally be attributed disregard of adequate ventilation. Non-ferrous metals and metals in general are considered as being non-renewable natural resources. Metals are needed because of their excellent and irreplaceable properties. The consumption of metals, with the exception of carbon steel, is steadily growing by 1-3 % annually, and that of stainless steel as much as 3-6 %. This is a general trend, which is periodically disturbed by cyclical variations. In recent years so-called "New Economy" has become prominent in the public media and the market value of the traditional industry has been well below its real value and importance. Nevertheless, the modem society requires metals today and also in the future, and the companies using the most modem technology in a responsible way and innovative solutions not only in technology, but also in everything they do will survive. This paper describes the role of Europe as a producer of primary base metals and as a supplier of technologies in the base metals industry. It concentrates on the development and commercialization of technologies and project implementation in the metallurgical industry. As one example of a European approach to these matters the paper presents Outokumpu' s response to the future challenges in the base metals industry. THE mines of the Consolidated Copper and Sulphur Company, consisting of the Eust1s, the Albert, and the Capel mines, are situated w Ascot township, Quebec, about ten miles southeast of Sherbrooke, on the main line of the Quebec Central railway. Of these mines, only the Eustis is now producing, and it has been operated almost continuously for the past seventy years. Mining methods have been improved in recent years but are still old fashioned when compared with those employed in more modern and up-to-date mines. The ore is of milling grade and is mined for its copper and sulphur con-tent. Silver is present in small quantity, together with a trace of gold. The ore is mined by the shrinkage stope method. Pillars are frequently left as supports for the hanging-wall to prevent serious dilution of the ore and are sometimes recovered after the ore is drawn from the stope. Occasionally, small blacks of ore in close proximity to the shaft are mined by a cut-and-fill method. HISTORY ALBERT AND CAPEL MINES: The Albert and the Capel mines, originally known as the Capelton mine, were discovered in 1863 by George Capel (1). By the end of 1866 the Albert shaft had been sunk to a depth of 121 feet on an incline of about 30 degrees where a vein five feet thick was encountered. In 1879, these mines passed into the hands of G. H. Nichols and Company, by whom they were operated practically continuously until 1907. When mining operations ceased in that year, the shafts had reached depths on the incline of approximately 2,300 feet and 1,000 feet, respectively. These mines have been allowed to cave and fill with water and have been inaccessible for many years.

"INTRODUCTION Industries around the globe have been making significant advancements in recent years due to innovations in automation technology. With the implementation of modern automation technology, professionals in process automation or plant operations can expect significant and exciting change, and the mining and mineral processing industries are no exception. From 2000 to 2010, the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) reported that an increased output and increased value of most metals has resulted in a rise in global metal and mineral process industries from $214 billion to $644 billion. [1] Since most productivity increases in mining and mineral process industries have been achieved through the ability to process lower grade ores with improved efficiency and larger equipment, these industries have begun to adopt advanced automation and control technologies. Despite a growth slow-down, the mining and mineral processing industries are poised for continued and sustainable growth and development due to an increasing demand for energy minerals and emerging technologies requiring minerals and metals previously not demand. However, as these industries becomes more automated, new challenges are arising on the horizon. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB John Payne from BP is credited with first using the term Demographic Time Bomb to describe the upcoming crisis in the process industry in finding experienced operations personnel. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years. This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, this implies that these skilled mining and mineral process professionals are an aging population with irreplaceable knowledge and experience that are expected to retire in the next 5-10 years. While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences."

A novel nondispersive electro-optical gas analyzer has been designed, fabricated and tested. The instrument is based on a pressure modulated absorption technique. Key features of this new gas analyzer technique include long-term zero and calibration stability. The technique was investigated for the gases carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The delivered analyzer was capable of measuring the three species CO, CO2 and NO2. It is a compact (300 cu in) package, is battery powered and weighs 15 lbs. Some thirty readings of each gas may be made on a single battery charge.

The Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota is one of the few remaining gold properties still in operation, in this country. The mine is relatively deep, with a bottom production level of 4250 feet, and a bottom development of 6200 feet. 4, 800 tons of ore are produced daily from three rather large, but inconsistent ore bodies; the dip of which is easterly at about 72 degrees, and the plunge to the south is about 30 degrees. The ore is, for the most part, a chlorite schist with large veins of secondary quartz and cummingtonite schist The ore is not continuous in any direction, but is localized at the ridges of the very intricate system of anti clinal folds. This property has been in active production since its establishment in 1876, except for a period during World War II. The incentive, or contract pay system, has been a gradual process that has been developed by the trial-and-error method down through the years. In looking over the old records, hand-shoveling was paid on an incentive basis as far back as 1916. Since this time, the contract system has grown until it now includes almost all types of underground work - except haulage and maintenance work

In recent years, a number of significant developments have occurred in the steel industry which are no-table and of general interest. This paper is confined to the steel-melting phase of the business. The development of high production rates on Stelco's Basic Open Hearth furnaces is chronologically summarized. Al-though various aspects of this subject have been presented previously, this paper summarizes the developments in high fuel rates, the usage of basic refractories, low and high oxygen rates and hearth maintenance. Background T HE interest which has been shown in steelmaking techniques in the past few years has been due, primarily, to the extremely high production rates obtained. Upon further study of the facilities and techniques employed to generate this steel at record rates, tonnage oxygen appears as the common factor. It can be stated that tonnage oxy-gen has revolutionized steelmaking techniques to a degree never before encountered. When I was originally asked to give this talk, I had certain preconceived ideas of the mining industry's reaction to Operations Research. It seemed at the time to be a rather simple task to collect these ideas for presentation here today. Jotting down these notions, I became concerned that overexposure to this activity called OR perhaps had clouded my outlook on what was actually being done on a nation-wide scale. I felt, to have a better cross section, a questionnaire of current industrial activity was in order. I solicited the response of some 75 mining companies varying in sizes and operating characteristics, and I am pleased to report that the response was good. I received answers from 51. The questionnaire was intended to measure the degree to which their concerns were actually engaged in OR efforts. With all due respect to the people who were so gracious as to answer the questionnaire, I feel that there is a tremendous misconception as to the designed purpose of OR. This is not to imply that there are no active OR groups in the mining industry. But by in large, the majority of the companies sampled appear to be somewhat confused as to what OR really is.

"Due to the way drilled deep foundations are being constructed, their structural integrity and geotechnical capacity are highly variable. Drop weight systems are increasingly being used to dynamically test the capacity and integrity of drilled deep foundations. Conventional pile driving hammers are often either inadequate or not economical to test these foundations and drop weight systems have therefore been developed to allow for dynamic testing.The advantages of the tests include high mobility, short testing time, low cost relative to static load tests (allowing multiple tests at a single site), and integrity/construction quality evaluation concurrent with capacity determination. The dynamic testing method for drilled deep foundations encounter several difficulties including: the need for a pre-testing analysis for matching pile, soil and testing system, adequate mass and drop height to reflect the mobilized capacity without structural damage, test interpretations for irregularly shaped and/or non-uniform piles, need for reliable dynamic measurements depending on the impact and the distance between the impact and the measuring point, and limited knowledge about the accuracy of the predictions.The principles of the tests are presented using simplified models and demonstrated via a case history. Drop weight systems are reviewed. Dynamic measurement principles are explained and the construction and testing quality effects are outlined and demonstrated via numerical modeling and case histories. A comparison of dynamic and static tests is presented via a database, case histories and finally a short review of relevant codes is provided.1 IntroductionTraditional static axial load test is performed by a slow application of a force produced against independent reaction, imitating structural loading. It is the most reliable method to determine the pile’s performance as commonly required under typical service conditions. The major limitations of this testing are: (i) high cost associated with set-up, test duration, interpretation and construction delays, and (ii) inability to obtain information about the pile-soil interaction along the pile without additional testing means (e.g. tell tales, strain gauges, etc.). These limitations are acute when high capacity foundations are involved."

This Bureau of Mines report deals principally with the resources and economic aspects of feldspar in the United States east of the Mississippi River. Although in a strict sense, all phases of the feldspar industry affect its economic structure, emphasis in this study is on supply, demand, and marketing. Although feldspar was originally mined for use in the manufacture of pottery and other ceramics, the glass industry, which began to use feldspar in the mid-1920's, now consumes more than half of the annual output. Most mining is open cut, and the methods used are similar to those used in mining crushed stone. Excess plant capacity has been chronic, and production is usually about 50 percent of capacity fur the industry as a whole. Since 1947, feldspar consumption has grown more slowly than the average for all U.S. industry. This has fostered intense competition, especially for the glass market. Prices have not kept pace with inflation, and profits are small. The trend of consumption through 1.970 for glass feldspar is expected to be upward; less rapid growth in consumption of ceramic feldspar is anticipated.

Whilst spontaneous combustion has never been considered a major problem in south Durham, certain collieries in the area have a history of heatings and precautions are essential. Three collieries are affected - Shotton, Vane Tempest and Seaham - and in the case of the last two, there are huge areas of high quality coal to work under conditions where spontaneous combustion is a real hazard. The seam being extracted has an immediate roof in goaf left by the incomplete extraction of a contiguous seam worked before the turn of the century. The presence of residual coal stocks and old roadways and cavities adds to the difficulty of preventing unwanted air movement. The main preventive measures adopted are the construction of airtight gateside packs and the use of sprayed surface coatings in the gate. Sampling systems and sampling points are described and, in particular the field of continuous monitoring from the surface is examined. The resulting possibility of a quantitative as well as qualitative assessment of the preventative measures required is discussed.

Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific area represent relative newcomers to the growing number of occurrences of this mineral deposit type. In addition to firmly establishing the importance of this region and its potential influence within the framework of world copper resources, the deposits of this region are significant from a scientific point of view because of their close relationship to the phenomena of Island Arc evolution. Since the discovery of Panguna on Bougainville in 1964, the list of prospects, proven and unproven, and developments, has grown to more than twenty and the number continues to increase. At the time of this writing, the number of prospects is imperfectly known but the following localities and numbers are fair minimum approximations: Manus (Admiralty Islands) (3); New Britain (5); New Ireland (1); Guadalcanal (2); New Guinea Highlands (6); Misima (1); and Fiji (2); Proven prospects are present in the new Guinea Highlands (2); one deposit is being developed in Test Irian, and one orebody, on Bougainville, is in production. This summary paper concerns a discussion of some of the geological characteristics of producers, developments, and prospects on the Islands of Nets Guinea, New Britain, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and Manus. I am not aware of publishable data for Misima or Fiji. As so many variables ultimately determine whether or not a porphyry copper occurrence becomes an orebody, not the least of which is geography, this summary treats the characteristics of these occurrences which alloy; their assignment to the porphyry copper category. For purposes of this discussion, I have considered those copper occurrences which are apparently genetically related to talc-alkaline intrusions and in which the content of copper has been upgraded 50 to 100 times the Clarke for that particular host rock. Some of these occurrences are shown on Figure 1.

"Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. As well as examining leadership traits, the way in which a leader can establish, organise, motivate his or her team and ultimately lead them to success is examined. Coal is increasingly viewed as one of the major fuel resources of this country for the remainder of this century. The need to extract a greater percentage of the coal in a given seam, together with advantages of improved safety, indicates that longwall mining will become more widely used within this time frame. A novel method of mining coal on a longwall face, utilizing high pressure water jets, is herein described. The mining machine proposed will exploit the stress conditions which exist on a longwall panel in order to achieve the required productivity while at the same time reducing respirable dust and methane ignition hazards. The water jets will excavate only the boundary of the extracted seam section, and thus the energy requirement of the machine will be minimized. The action of the machine is similar to that of an existing coal plow, except in that the wedge teeth of the plow are replaced by oscillating high pressure water jets. The machine can, therefore, cut to the depth and at the speed of existing shearer units at equivalent power levels. The removal of impact stresses from the machine will reduce downtime required for maintenance and replacement of picks and lower the load on the haulage motor of the system. The ability of the machine to increase the depth of cut without an increase in horsepower will further improve productivity when transportation systems to remove the greater production are in operation.

Wildcat strikes in the Appalachian coal fields, primarily in West Virginia, have resulted in an estimated 4.5 million ton loss in coal production during July and through the first week in August. Since then, the strike intensified further, and on August 9, nearly all of West Virginia's 60,000 miners were off the job with another 10,000 miners on strike in eastern Kentucky. The Bureau of Mines estimates that West Virginia's coal output is currently (8/9) eight million tons below last year when the state produced 108 million tons. West Virginia, the Nation's second largest coal producer of coal behind Kentucky, has not failed to mine over 100 million tons a year since 1938. At the end of the second week in August, nearly all coal miners in West Virginia remained out. The strike is a protest against a cutback in union health and retirement benefits. An announcement June 23 about the United Mine Worker's health and retirement fund precipitated the strike, Fund directors said that because of inflation and production losses caused by earlier wildcat strikes and the severe winter, miners would have to pay the first $250 of hospital costs and 40 percent of doctor bills, up to $500 a year. Previously, the funds paid all hospital and doctor bills. According to the West Virginia Coal Association each day of the strike in West Virginia results in a loss of coal production of 500,000 tons, a loss of $3.8 million in miners wages and $1 million in contributions to the UMWA's health and retirement fund.
