The mining method at the Cannon Mine uses heading and bench stopes, which are subsequently backfilled with cemented high-strength fill prior to pillar removal. The dimensions of the pillars, 24 feet wide by G5 to 95 feet high, re-quire careful blasting in order to not damage the rock, compromising pillar strength and complicating later removal. Additionally, the proximity of dwellings makes vibration control a must for good-neighbor relations. A blast monitoring study was conducted in order to optimize bench blasting practices to maximize fragmentation, reduce costs, minimize well damage, and minimize ground vibration.

My. first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,1 July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when concentrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products; and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of, lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test, however, I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the contents in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of Mr. H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal.,in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg: or less.. As a consequence of the smallness of the 'quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

Among petroleum refinery employees and officials throughout the United States there has been marked effort to reduce accident frequency and severity. For the interest and benefit of refineries both in Louisiana and in other petroleum-refining States it has been possible to obtain from five refineries, representing 70 per cent of the production of Louisiana, tae accident experience for the past 3 to 6 years. The companies concerned have requested that their names be not used. For tide reason the four plants listed and discussed are designated as refineries A, E, C, and D. The size of the plant as regards largest to smallest number of employees is indicated by the alphabetical order.

9.61. Introduction. Open pit mining methods produce more than 80% of all raw materials today in the United States. Much of this comes either from properties that formerly employed underground methods and were converted to open pit or from mines that ultimately must go underground when the economic stripping limit is reached. Generally the ores are transported over large vertical distances and techniques have been developed to do this economically. One approach is to combine conventional surface trucking, over relatively level roads, with the use of gravity and underground facilities. There are various modifications, depending upon the character of the orebody and the topography. Several schemes, as used in Sweden, Canada, and the United States, merit describing. One of the critical problems involved in the transference of ores from surface to underground is that of flow of bulk solids. Must it be crushed? Will it hang up in the transfer? What size and inclination of ore pass are required. How is the ore best fed onto the transporting device underground? As an example, the planning engineers for the Carol Project of the Iron Ore Company of Canada faced these problems in making their designs for the production and transportation of some 55,000 tpd from their Smallwood Mine in Labrador. Other operations, facing somewhat similar conditions, used other approaches of interest. This chapter describes some of the factors involved in the design, construction, and operation of a combination surface underground transportation system as applied to open pit mining operations. 9.62. The rate of face advance in the gold mines is between 3 and 10 m a month, with a median value of about 5 m a month; it follows that faces are blasted less frequently than is planned. There are many advantages in the use of short holes for stoping to give face advances of from 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast. This has the potential for so increasing the frequency of blasting that monthly rates of face advance could be improved significantly. Cleaning with face scrapers is too slow to permit the maximum achievement of a complete clean, drill, and blast cycle for each shift. Short-hole blasting, combined with the use of mechanical conveyors for face cleaning, offers the possibility of completing two such cycles each day, yielding monthly rates of face advance of up to 35 m. Experiments aimed at developing safe, unitized explosive charges well-suited to produce reliable face advances of 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast under a wide range of gold-mining conditions have been notably successful. A novel method of assessing the effectiveness of a blast based on the percentage of holes that leave socket lengths of 5 cm or less was used. Unitized charges of 60 per cent Ammon gelignite, 600 mm long by 25 mm in diameter, appear to be near optimal. The explosive is de-sensitized to obviate detonation by chance mechanical impact, but requires only a 6D detonator for initiation; it has good water-resistance. Means have been developed for producing these cartridges automatically, but the necessary machines will have to be built specially and the cartridges are not yet available in large numbers. A second experiment by way of an extended pilot production trial using these cartridges in holes 0,9 m long is now under way. Preliminary results indicate that drilling and explosive efficiencies and productivity are well above average, even though face scraping is being used. Unitized charges of this type are likely to prove even more advantageous when mechanical face conveyors come into use.

"As a fundamental study to prepare copper-based alloys with rare earths (RE: La, Gd, Nd, Ce and Y) without any inclusions, the solubility of rare earth in liquid copper was experimentally determined. Liquid copper alloys were equilibrated with carbon and rare earth carbide in a graphite crucible in an argon atmosphere at 1523-1873 K.Solubilities of rare earth in liquid copper were determined by approaching the equilibrium values from both the lower and the ·higher concentrations than those expected· in the preliminary experiments. They were expressed as a function of temperature. Carbon in Cu-RE alloy was also analyzed and thermodynamically discussed.IntroductionOver the past several years, the demand for highly conductive and high strength copper-based alloys, such as Cu-Cr, Cu-Zr and Cu-Cr-Zr for use in electronic materials has increased.1 -7 These alloying elements are very reactive and easily oxidized to form oxide inclusions during melting. To avoid the oxide inclusions, it may be effective to utilize the strong reducing power of carbon in conditions under which no carbides form.In this study, to provide fundamental data for producing Cu-RE( rare earth) alloys without any inclusions, the solubility of rare earth in liquid copper in equilibrium with .carbon .was determined and discussed on the basis of the experimental results and the thermodynamic data.ExperimentalSample preparation for equilibrium experimentsOxygen-free copper (99.99%), lanthanum (99.9%), gadolinium (99.9%), neodymium (99.9%), cerium (99.9%) and yttrium (99.9%), and their oxides were used as starting materials.Each rare earth carbide was prepared by mixing rare earth oxide with carbon, which is a little more than the stoichiometric composition, pressing it into a tablet form and sintering at about 2000.K for 20 ks in a vacuum furnace using a graphite crucible. Powder X-ray analysis showed that only the carbon and rare earth carbide (REC2) was present in each sample.Cu-RE mother alloys (5-20 mass % RE) were prepared beforehand by mixing metallic rare earth with oxygen-free copper, and melting in an electric arc furnace."

The question of earth models has repeatedly arisen in our work. An accurate representation of the seismic properties is required for three reasons: 1.To be able to determine from a set of received arrival times, the location of a seismic source in the earth, and secondly the degree of accuracy required in the model used for calculating source location from the set of arrival time differences. 2. To be able to determine the expected arrival times at an array of geophones produced in response to a hypothetical source in the earth. 3. To be able to estimate received signal strengths more accurately. The work reported here on earth models is based on information from sever- al consultants and from others who expressed an interest in the problem and supplied information to us. II. COAL MINE GEOLOGY On one of our earlier assignments for the Bureau of Mines, Earth Science Research Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts prepared for us a short description of the lithology to be expected at coal mine sites. This description follows, together with the ranges of compressional seismic velocities (Figure I*) associated with typical materials comprising the layered structure of a coal mine area. Coal is primarily associated with fresh water sediments including sandstones, shales, and clays, and occasionally may be metamorphased to varying degrees. In the Appalachian Basin the coal beds occur within cyclical sequences of non-marine shales, sands tones, conglomerates, limes tones, and clays. The beds range in thickness from a few inches to 60 feet, averaging between 2 feet and 10 feet. They have generally broad areal extent, occasionally up to 5,000 square miles, and have an overall tabular or lens-like shape. Within a particular lens, local changes in thickness are normal.

Since 2003, there has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for engineering, technical and project services in the mineral industries. This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.

Before Capitol Hill hearings, primary metal producers are often called "concentrated industries" because there are relatively few companies in each category and most of them are large corporations. Capitol Hill still looks on large companies as inherently wrong, but there are about as many arguments one way as the other. Encourage Imports? Now comes Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust Richard W. McLaren to say that imports of metals and other basic materials should be encouraged to create competition for the concentrated industries here at home. Cloakroom analysts are wondering how this ties in with President Nixon's cabinet task force studying the copper price structure. This is chaired by Dr. Hendrik Houthakker, a member of the White House Council of Economic Advisers who has also indicated that the use of imports to pull down prices may be one way to create less inflation.

From a detailed combustion testing program and earlier experience with Leigh Creek coal, the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) gained a wide insight into the use of low rank coal fired boiler plant. This work is fundamental for the selection of boiler design parameters and other details which in turn determine the correct coal deposit selection for future power station development. In addition it gives boiler designers a good indication of the measures required to give reliable plant operation. Extrapolation from experience with existing plant, the designers main source of information, was not considered appropriate because of the lack of experience with similar coals. Brown coal beneficiation is also being assessed by ETSA in an attempt to improve the coal quality by the pretreatment of the raw coal prior to combustion in future coal.fired boilers. ETSA is also involved in the development of circulating fluid bed and gasification processes to determine whether these alternative processes are a more viable method of utilising the South Australian coals than pulverised fuel firing.

The Wolf Creek Upper Narrows Tunnel (Upper Narrows Tunnel) is one of the first major highway tunnel in the United States implementing the use of spray-on membrane for purposes of constructing a double-shell drainage solution between an initial shotcrete lining and a final cast-in-place concrete lining (Figure 1). In the case of the Upper Narrows Tunnel the primary membrane is constructed with a spray-on product manufactured by Degussa, namely Masterseal® 340 FA (MS 340) that has been utilized previously in other tunnel projects. Shotcrete-like in application, but differing in physical properties, MS 340 is now outdated, and is succeeded by Masterseal® 345 (MS 345), a nearly identical product, with improvements in material properties. Tunnel project histories utilizing either MS 340 or MS 345 are discussed and summarized with regard to the respective motives for prompting spray-on membrane selection and the realized benefits resulting from spray-on membrane construction. With an emphasis on the Upper Narrows Tunnel, project summaries discuss details of the aspects of design for spray-on membrane construction methodology as opposed to conventional sheet membrane construction methodologies. It is anticipated that experience gained during the construction of the Upper Narrows Tunnel with respect to other tunnel projects that have utilized spray-on membrane will be of use for future tunnels employing spray-on membrane in drainage solutions.

It has been shown before that liquids can slip at a solid boundary, which prompted the idea that parallel-surface bearings can be obtained by the use of alternating slip and non-slip regions in the direction of fluid flow. The amount of slip at the wall depends upon the surface tension at the liquid - solid interface, which in turn depends on the chemical composition of the surface and its roughness. In the present study a heterogeneous surface was created by coating half of a circular glass disc with a coating repellent to glycerol. A rotating glass disc was placed at a known distance above the coated stationary surface and the gap was filled with glycerol. With the top surface moving in the direction of slip to non-slip region, a pressure build up can be theoretically predicted. The pressure gradient in the two regions is constant, similar to that in a Rayleigh step bearing, with the maximum pressure at the boundary. In order to accurately measure the force generated by the pressure increase, a load cell was attached to the heterogeneous disc. Experiments were conducted by varying both sliding speed and distance, and the resultant load carrying capacity was measured and compared with theoretical calculations. This allowed the slip coefficient of the coated surface to be evaluated.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke; (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced; and (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation. This report is one in this county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Perry County, Ky.

Petrographic analysis of rocks is traditionally performed with optical microscopy using thin sections and point counting. However, this does not provide accurate mineral proportions for sedimentary, volcanic, and soil-like material, because rock fragments, groundmass, and matrix are not identified as specific minerals. In addition, groundmass phases in volcanic rocks can be too fine to identify individually, and making thin sections of intact soil-like material is difficult because much of the material is not well cemented. ModAn is a normative calculation that estimates modes ??by applying Gaussian elimination and multiple linear regression techniques to simultaneous mass balance equations? (Paktunc, 2001) and allows location-specific mineral compositions to be used. One of the features of ModAn that makes it appropriate for this study is that it can model one of several sulfide minerals. Mineral compositions for Questa minerals were determined from electron microprobe analysis and entered into ModAn. Then by combining and normalizing results, bulk quantitative mineralogy can be determined using ModAn, petrographic observations, electron microprobe analysis, clay mineral analysis, and the whole-rock chemistry of the sample.

Principles of ecologically friendly geo-technologies construction are formulated on the basis of the works of the leading scientists in the field of rational processing of mineral resources of the Russian Academy of Sciences. One of these concepts is a new direction in rotational disintegration of mineral and technogenic raw material with the purpose of effective subsequent enrichment. A large amount of practical experience has been accumulated in the industry on selective destruction by application of vibrational method on initial material with consideration of its physical-mechanical properties and mineral structure. This method is successfully realised in a conic inertial pulverisation devices constructed by Mekhanobr Institute (St. Petersburg). A new construction of conical-inertial pulverisation with a modification of disintegration force has been developed recently at Mekhanobr Institute. It allows, in some cases, to increase selectivity of subdivision and to avoid over-disintegration. Advantages of “wet” subdivision methods in conic inertial disintegration devices are proved. The efficiency of such subdivision can be increased due to rational use of the phenomenon of a dislocation-dynamic diffusion. Its advantage is proved by the effect on disintegrated material by frequency-modulated variable electrical fields of low power. It was shown in industrial conditions, that the productivity of the spherical mill can be increased by 10 %, and that it also prevents ecologically harmful surface active substances (SAS) in milling zone and it reduces the dust content in the air. The techniques of tentative estimation of efficiency of various proceedings technogenic materials and their classification are created. The scientific fundaments of rational, ecologically friendly technology of processing and regeneration of various kinds of technogenic raw material are developed. A number of effective technologies on processing of wastes is developed and inculcated in concentration factories and metallurgical factories.

Vast deposits of low-grade manganese ore exist in the United States, yet domestic production is insignificant compared to the more than 2 million tons of ore imported yearly into this country.1 A basic problem in connection with manganese is to find economical ways to utilize domestic resources.2 As a part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources and to reduce dependence on foreign sources, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive research to broaden manganese technology and to find economical processes for recovering manganese from these low-grade resources. Although a great many processes have been proposed for treating domestic manganese resources, a failing of many of them is that too many steps are involved for economical operation.2 Some of the major processes that have been proposed were reviewed by Norman and Kirby.3,4

MINING geology does not lend itself - very readily to a review embracing "improvements in methods," as perhaps do shop practices or laboratory procedures. The "methods" used in mining geology are simply the application of geology to mining; winning the ore, the handling of material, mechanical appliances, all belong strictly to mining proper, and have no place in a review of geology as applied to mining. A comprehensive review would necessarily cover a .very broad field, which could be subdivided into many -parts. Granite ores are composed of silicate minerals and a variety of valuable REE (rare earth elements)-bearing minerals, however the processing technique to recover these valuable minerals is not yet developed. In this study, the recovery of REE-bearing minerals by dry magnetic separation and wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS)-settling from surface sample and from drill core sample, respectively, of a granitic REE-Zr-Nb ore deposit was investigated. The two samples have different mineralogy however in both samples, light REE are commonly contained in REE carbonate minerals while Y and heavy REE are commonly contained in zirconium silicate minerals and pyrochlore. The liberation size of the REE-bearing minerals in the two samples ranges from 10-250 ?m. Previous flotation testwork conducted on the drill core sample reported high recoveries of La2O3 (88%) and Ce2O3 (88%) but low recoveries of Y2O3 (42%), ZrO2 (17%), and Nb2O5 (29%). The objective of this study was to obtain higher recoveries of Y2O3, ZrO2, and Nb2O5 by dry magnetic separation and WHIMS-settling. Both processes implemented the application of a low magnetic intensity to initially separate the ferromagnetic minerals then a high magnetic intensity to recover the REE-bearing minerals. The results showed higher recoveries of Y2O3, ZrO2, and Nb2O5 by dry magnetic separation and WHIMS-settling indicating the potential of magnetic separation and gravity separation in recovering the heavy REE-bearing minerals. WHIMS-settling is more recommendable than dry magnetic separation because of its applicability in treating a wider range of particle size. In the WHIMS-settling, the light REE, Y, and Zr minerals were recovered mainly by applying four stages at high magnetic intensity of 21,500 gauss while the weakly magnetic pyrochlore was recovered mainly by decantation of the nonmagnetic slurry after a short settling time of 0.25 to 0.50 h. "Small-punch tests were conducted at 4, 77 and 293 K on three types of austenitic stainless steels JNl, JJl and JK2, which were solution treated, water-quenched and then aged at 923, 973, 1023 and 1073 K for 5 h. Small-punch test energy was employed for the evaluation of the aginginduced embrittlement behavior in these materials. Fracture surface of small punch test specimen for the solution treated steels exhibited a ductile fracture, showing the highest SP test energy values. The presence of intergranular brittle fracture was observed in aged specimens. Smallpunch test energy decreased significantly as the aging process progressed. The highest and lowest decrease in small-punch test energy with aging temperature occurred in JNl and JK2 steels, respectively. The decrease in small-punch test energy showed to examine appropriately the aging-induced embrittlement in these materials. The difference in aging-induced embrittlement behavior for these steels was explained based on the volume fraction of intergranular precipitates in aged samples.IntroductionA high level combination of strength and toughness is required for cryogenic structural materials used in the superconducting magnets of fusion nuclear reactor. This requirement is beyond the capability of conventional austenitic stainless steels [1]. The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) developed new cryogenic JNl, JJl and JK2 austenitic stainless steels. The structure of superconducting magnets is supposed to be constructed by welding thick plates of this kind of steels. Thus, most of the components are exposed to thermal cycles. The slow cooling may cause microstructure changes in both the base material and weld zone. These changes may also decrease the fracture toughness of these materials at cryogenic temperatures. Therefore, it is important to study the effect of thermal aging on fracture toughness behavior for these steels. Konosu et al. [2] carried out a study of the effect of thermal aging on the mechanical properties for JNl steel using tension and fatigue tests. Kwon et al. [3] evaluated the deterioration in fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures for the isothermally aged JNl steel by means of the Small-Punch (SP) test. No other reports were found about the cryogenic fracture toughness behavior for this kind of steels. To evaluate the cryogenic fracture behavior, the elastic-plastic Jrc value is a good alternative [4,5]; nevertheless, the standard required specimen size makes it difficult to be used for the fracture toughness evaluation in small zones."

A summary of various leaching operations is presented showing the role of these activities to the successful operation of the mining venture. The summary will include recent developments in dump, heap, and in situ leaching of copper and uranium ores. It will include a discussion on the expanding impact of industrial and academic research on leaching as a mining tool, showing the interplay of chemical kinetics and biogenic activity.
