THE name fuller's earth, which was derived from its early use in "fulling" or removing grease from woolen goods, is a term that is generally considered to designate mineral matter, containing hydrous aluminum silicates of the clay group, which has a high capacity for removing colors from oils, whether of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin. Fuller's earths are usually dried and may be "tempered" by heating or may be treated with water or reagents to improve their efficiency. For our purpose the term "acid-treated earths" will include those products from the partial decomposition of mineral water by acid which are equal to or more efficient than an untreated fuller's earth from Quincy, Fla., when used in bleaching mineral oil by the "contact" process. In general, the contact process for treating oils consists of heating and agitating a mixture of oil and finely divided adsorbent, the latter being subsequently removed by filtration. The term "adsorbent" is used because, although there has been a great deal of controversy over the mechanism of removal of impurities from oils by mineral matter, there is no doubt that adsorption, which involves the surface of the solid, plays a major part.' The properties that make fuller's earth useful in the treatment of petroleum products by "percolation1' and in the purification of edible oils by the contact process have long been studied, but the comparatively recent adaptation of the contact process to the bleaching of petroleum products has made desirable the further investigation of fuller's earth and other adsorbent earths.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) newest operation. Production at the mine began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine produces 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) using mechanized block cave mining methods. The DOZ Mine has several major improvements when compared with previous block cave mines in the district. It has an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system. PTFI's copper and gold mining complex is located in the Ertsberg mining district in Irian Jaya, Indonesia (Fig. 1). The Ertsberg district is located in the Sudirman Mountains at elevations from 3,000 to 4,500 m (9,800 to 14,700 ft) above sea level. The topography is extremely rugged and rainfall in the mine area averages 3,000 mm/a (118 in./year). Freeport began production in the district in 1972 when the mill began processing ore from the Ertsberg openpit. Underground mining began in 1980 when the Gunung Bijih Timur-Ertsberg East (GBT) Mine was brought online using block caving methods. In 1991, the GBT Mine reached a maximum production rate of 28 kt/d (31,000 stpd). Ore from the mine was exhausted in 1994. The Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) was brought into production in 1994. It, too, used block caving methods and had a design rate of 10 kt/d (11,000 stpd). The IOZ is currently producing at a rate of 21 kt/ d (23,000 stpd). The DOZ was discovered in the mid-1980s by deep drilling from the GBT. The GBT, IOZ and DOZ deposits are all situated in the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). In 1993, the first of several studies was completed that indicated that portions of the DOZ Mine could be economically mined using block caving methods. Limited development was started in 1995. Full-scale development and construction began in late 1997. The crusher and conveying system began operating during the first quarter 2000. The first of two main exhaust shafts has been com¬missioned, along with three of the four new main fans. The second exhaust shaft and fourth main fan will be in service by the end of 2001. Undercutting and production began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine will reach its design production rate of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) in 2003. A study is under way to determine if an ultimate production rate of 35 kt/d (38,500 stpd) is feasible.

"The principles involved in the generation and application of plasma energy are reviewed briefly and the major developments in commercial and semi-commercial primary metal and alloy production are described and discussed in broad outline, with emphasis on present performance and future potential. New concepts in the application of plasma energy in primary operations are described with emphasis on the expected advantages over conventional technology and the problems that have to be solved to enable effective implementation.IntroductionThe use of plasma energy in industrial processes is generally considered to have started in 1905 with the operation of the Birkeland process for nitrogen fixation for fertilizer production. Although it seems logical to apply plasma energy to metallurgical processes, which also usually require considerable energy at high temperature levels, serious development work along these lines did not begin until the early 1970's. The reasons for this hiatus are associated in part with recognized difficulties in applying plasma energy in processes involving tonnage quantities of solids in severe industrial environments and the delicate nature of the earlier plasma generators. Another, and perhaps overriding factor, is the fairly steady improvement in efficiency and economy of most primary metal producing processes by conventional developments and modifications through the 1950's and 60's. Examples of these evolutionary changes include burden preparation and fuel injection in blast furnace applications and prereduction treatments in ferroalloy operations. By the end of the 1970's most primary metal producing processes had been optimized close to the limit, at least in terms of those operations that were able and willing to implement the developed improvements. In this context, plasma energy offered the possibility to achieve further significant improvements in primary operations where conventional means were exhausted."

It would be most difficult to place a date on the beginning of the revolution in analytical techniques that we have witnessed in recent years; but there is no question that the period since the end of World War II has seen a major change in thinking with respect to control and accounting analyses. For reasons relating to competition, much of this change was brought about in the chemical industries and only more recently has begun to affect directly the mineral industries. In considering the subject outlined in the title of this paper, one might well be tempted to discuss solely the more exotic methods of control and automation which have come into being in the past short while. In this paper, however, an attempt will be made to take a broader view and consider not only the application of newer purely physical methods of control but also those phases of chemical plus physical analyses that have bearing on our industry.

Minerals appraisers/valuers often find great difficulty in attempting to employ the sales comparison approach to the market value appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income-producing property. Here, common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by mineral appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the income approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much-too-common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value mineral appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables. The examples are used as the basis for a discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while warning against the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.

A fast, reliable, and low cost characterization of ore minerals products, as they result from different processing actions, represents one of the most challenging targets in the mineral processing sector. Today different techniques are available according to different sampling strategies and analytical principles. In this paper, the possibilities offered by the adoption of hyperspectral imaging based sensing units working both at micro- and macro-scale are presented and discussed. According to the different phases and stages of ore minerals and products characterization, and starting from the analyses of the detected hyperspectral firms, it is thus possible to derive useful information about mineral flow stream properties and their physical-chemical attributes. This last aspect can be utilized to define innovative process mineralogy strategies and to implement on-line procedures at processing level. The present study discusses the effects related to the adoption of different hardware configurations, the utilization of different logics to perform the analysis and the selection of different algorithms according to the different characterization, inspection, and quality control actions to apply. "Researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the mechanics of respirable size fragment formation in coal. The project is based on the premise that a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation may lead to techniques for reduction and better control of coal dust problems in mines. Presently, it is believed that the mode of fracture propagation which can range from pure tensile to pure shear or any mixed mode in between and the loading or displacement rate can influence the amount of respirable size fragments that are generated on new fracture surfaces during the fracture propagation process The essence of any coal cutting process is one of mixed mode fracture propagation. To study the crack propagation process, a unique mixed mode testing rig was designed and fabricated. This rig is capable of applying loads to a prenotched test specimen that range from pure Mode I (tensile mode) to nearly pure Mode II (shear mode) or many mixed mode loading combinations. It is also possible to apply different loading or displacement rates to the test specimen. With this rig, it is possible to create new fracture surfaces via the different fracture modes and under various loading conditions.These new fracture surfaces are examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterize the amount of structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that occurs during the fracture process. Initial observations suggest that the amount of fine fragment formation and the new fracture surface appearance is related to the fracture initiation conditions, particularly the fracture mode and the loading rate. Mode II loading and higher loading rates seem to generate more structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that Mode 1 loading at slower rates.With the mixed mode test rig, the mechanics of fracture initiation for a single crack can be controlled to better understand its influence on respirable size fragment formation. Such understanding may lead to methods which characterize the tendency of specific coal seams to produce undesirable fine fragments during the fracture process, or it may lead to rational recommendations and design guidelines or coal mining machines which inherently produce less dust.IntroductionAs part of a larger effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners, researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal. This project is part of a com¬prehensive research effort within the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust which is jointly administered by The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University.The principal source of the coal dust in underground mining is the cutting operation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and various European research organizations have conducted investigations into the mechanics of coal cutting for many years. These studies of airborne respirable dust (ARD) formation have concentrated on empirical studies of the various cutting parameters and their effect on ARD for¬mation. The parameters study include depth of cut, cutting speed and bit spacing.(1,2) Other studies investigated the effect of symmetric and asymmetric bit wear and various bit geometries and designs (3-5) Roepke(6) summarized the principals of proper coal cutting to minimize dust formation by recommending to ""cut at maximum depth (maximum advance rate) at all times, at minimum RPM, with the fewest possible bits, having the lowest possible included tip angle."" The dictionary defines 'jargon' as "barbarous or debased language". This description does not suffice. Quiller-Couch has said, it is "a kind of writing which, from a superficial likeness, commonly passes for prose in these days, and by lazy folk is commonly written for prose, yet actually is not prose at all ". The two main vices of jargon, he says, are "that it uses circumlocution rather than short straight speech", like the Babu who reported his mother's death by saying: "Regret to inform you, the hand that rocked the cradle has kicked the bucket ". Its other chief' vice is that "it habitually chooses vague woolly abstract nouns rather than concrete ones", like the newspaper statement; "He was conveyed to his place of residence in an intoxicated condition", instead of saying, "He was carried home drunk ". Jargon is "an infirmity of speech", it is not journalese, but akin to it. "Like respect- ability in Chicago, jargo4 stalks unchecked in our midst" and renders much technical writing ridiculous. It deals in periphrasis instead of going straight to the point, it loves the abstract rather than the concrete, it dabbles in words of sound rather than of meaning. Avoid it, despise it., if you purpose earnestly to write well. The Mont Reed iron ore deposit, owned by ArcelorMittal, is situated approximately 140 km southwest of the Mont-Wright mine in the southern region of the Labrador Trough, Canada. Acquired by Québec Cartier Mining (QCM) in the 1960s, the Mont Reed mining property has remained unexploited due to the complex nature of the ore in the area. However, during the last years ArcelorMittal’s R&D team has been dedicated to developing a process to beneficiate the Mont Reed ore and produce high-quality pellet feed suitable for direct reduction furnaces. Extensive research revealed that achieving a good liberation degree of particles required grinding the material below 75 μm (P80 of 53 μm). To find the most effective technology for this task, a detailed comparison between ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding was conducted. Both grinding technologies underwent detailed testing in bench-scale experiments. The ground products were comprehensively characterised, including size distribution analysis and chemical analysis per size fraction. Additionally, liberation analysis was performed using an automated scanning electron microscope (SEM). To determine the grinding specific energy, a method previously developed at Samarco (Brazil) for fine grinding of iron ores was employed. Furthermore, magnetic separation and flotation tests were conducted on the ground products. After a thorough evaluation of all the results, it was observed that both ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding produced samples with similar physical characteristics. However, the vertical mill demonstrated higher efficiency in grinding the material. To conclude the study, an economic evaluation was conducted for both options considering various factors. Overall, ArcelorMittal’s R&D team’s dedicated efforts have brought them closer to unlocking the potential of the Mont Reed ore deposit and paving the way for its future utilisation to the production of high-quality pellet feed.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation so that there may be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation. This paper deals specifically with the mining and crushing methods employed by Victor Plaster, Inc., Victor, Ontario County, N. Y. The maximum annual production capacity of this company is 150,000 tons of crushed gypsum. The methods and practices employed arc typical of those followed in the gypsum mines in western New York State. The shaft is, perhaps, the deepest and the thickness of the gypsum mined is above the average for the section.

My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. Determination of the best time to replace an aging unit of equipment is a recurring problem which is common to essentially all surface and underground mining operations. Virtually all mining equipment is subject to wear and the resulting deterioration that increases with equipment life. This mechanical deterioration results in lower availability and, thus, decreasing, production. Due to decreasing production and increasing repair costs, there is an optimum age at which the replacement of a given equipment unit with a new unit will result in the lowest cost per unit of production for the equipment operation in question (Figure 1). Determination of this optimum replacement age is further complicated by factors such as: possible overhaul alternatives, fleet replacement and expansion alternatives, remaining life of the mine, and technological improvements in the potential replacement or differences in the production capacities of these replacements. Determination of the optimum time to replace an equipment unit becomes more critical each successive year due to the rising capital costs of new equipment versus maintaining old equipment. An incorrect choice of the replacement age for an equipment unit can result in excessive costs to the mining operation. If a unit is replaced too early, the capital cost of the unit is not fully utilized; conversely, replacing a unit too late results in excessive maintenance costs and low production. The economic life of a piece of equipment is the equipment age that results in the lowest total discounted cost per unit of production for that piece of equipment, not considering the cost of future replacements. The economic life of a piece of equipment is usually shorter than the physical life, the maximum age at which a machine is capable of doing useful work. The optimum replacement age for a piece of mining equipment may vary from the economic life of that equipment due to the remaining life of the mine, fleet considerations, costs associated with potential replacement machines, and capital rationing constraints. For example, the equipment life of the current machine that may result in the lowest cost per unit of production might be 10 years; however, when the timing of the future replacement costs are entered into the calculation, a different life for the current machine might result in the lowest total cost per unit produced for the remaining life of the mine.

A reliable laboratory method to characterise the response of free gold particles when subjected to flash flotation conditions has been developed by AMIRA P420 researchers at Curtin University. This test has been applied to assess the flotation recovery of gravity recoverable gold from free milling ores as well as synthetic ores featuring either a gravity concentrate or gold powder. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of States or Provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

Ausmelt Technology has been applied to the recycling of spent pot liner (SPL) generated from primary alnminum production. The process is centered on the Ausmelt furnace, in which the SPL is converted under high temperature, oxidizing conditions to an HF containing gas stream and inert slag. fluorine is recovered from the SPL as HF gas and is concentrated and used to manufacture AIF) for recycle to the aluminum smelters. Approximately 87% of the fluorine can be recovered and converted to AIF), with the remainder being effectively tied up in the by product slag. Cost projections show that the recycling process will be competitive with other processes for SPL. The production and recycling of AIF) provides available credit that significantly offsets the operating cost of the facility. Ausmelt Technology for recycling of SPL is currently being marketed in North America by Ausmelt Technology Corporation in Denver, Colorado, and in the rest of the world by Ausmelt Limited of Dandenong, Australia.

"INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Southeast Collector (SeC) is a new 15km long 3.0m internal diameter wastewater tunnel designed by Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) that twins the existing 2.6m diameter York-Durham Sewage System (YDSS) tunnel. Both sewage tunnels are located north of the City of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. The SeC provides much needed conveyance capacity for the rapidly growing York Region population, supporting development until 2036 and increasing sewage system security (Hatch Mott MacDonald and AECOM 2011). Construction of the SeC will also permit flows of the twinned section of the YDSS to be bypassed in order to clean, inspect and carry out any essential maintenance within the YDSS tunnel. Although owned and operated by York Region, the SeC spans two regional municipalities beginning upstream from the intersection of Ninth Line and Rouge Bank Drive in the City of Markham in York Region to the downstream Finch Avenue and Valley Farm Road intersection in the City of Pickering in Durham Region. See Figure 1 for the SeC and YDSS alignment. The project includes 19 shafts and chambers with depths ranging from 8 to 48m in addition to seven facilities supporting the operation and maintenance of the sewer. The construction contract was awarded to Strabag Inc. in July 2011 for $291M CAD. Construction Management services were provided by a joint venture team of Hatch Mott MacDonald and AECOM. Existing York-Durham Sewage System The YDSS tunnel was completed in 1979 and was constructed using an open shielded TBM with ribs and lagging temporary support, followed by installation of a 380mm thick unreinforced cast-in-place (CIP) concrete final lining. The YDSS sewer system has numerous connections that accumulate flows from various urban areas within York Region. The section of the YDSS twinned by the SeC flows under gravity conditions and had been putting a strain on the municipality’s potential for population and development growth having reached its maximum capacity of 420 ML/d. According to the York Region’s Water and Wastewater Master Plan, the existing YDSS would not have been able to handle wet weather flows past 2016 (Genivar and XCG Consultants 2009). The dependability of this section of the YDSS is also of concern because it is the main and critical connection between the sewer systems upstream and the downstream Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP)."

LLOYDMINSTER is the centre of a well developed agricultural area, lying on the Alberta-Saskatchewan interprovincial boundary in Township Fifty. The surrounding country is gently undulating, without any notable topographic features, but twenty-two miles to the north the North Saskatchewan river, and thirty miles to the south the Battle river, have cut deep valleys. In the spring of 1934, a wild-cat well (Lloydminster Gas Company's No. 1 well) was successful in striking a large flow of gas at a depth o 1,974 ? feet. The gas was piped into the town, a short distance south, and Lloyd-minster became the first Saskatchewan town to be served with natural gas. Following this discovery, other wells were sunk and, up to the present, thirteen wells have been drilled m what is here designated the Lloydminster area. Ten of these wells are in Saskatchewan and three in Alberta. Seven were successful in obtaining gas, three oil, and three have been unsuccessful. The area tested by this drilling is about eight thousand acres, six thousand of which can be considered as proved gas or oil land. To the south and west of Lloydminster, in the Province of Alberta, there are several areas in which oil and gas have been discovered. The Wainwright field lies nearly fifty miles to the southwest; Battleview, where recently gas has been discovered, is thirty miles west-southwest; and the Ribstone area is about thirty miles south and a little west. At Ribstone, a number of wells were drilled some years ago and there is a small production of oil. The data relating to the wells in the Lloydminster area that are recorded in this paper are taken from the records of the several companies operating in the field. The names of these companies are given on the map and on the type stratigraphic section (Figures 1 and 2). The author wishes to record his appreciation to Mr. R. H. Shaw and Mr. 0. C. Yates, both of Lloyd-minster, for much valuable information; also to Mr. E. Swain, of the Department of Natural Resources, Regina, with whom the writer has visited the field on several occasions, and who, by his enthusiasm and encouragement, has done much to forward the development of the area. The well samples were examined at Ottawa by officers of the Borings Division of the Geological Survey of Canada, who also made the interpretations of the logs. Assessment of abrasivity and cutter life are necessary to properly manage risks when tunneling in mixed face ground which includes ground with cobbles and boulders. Maximizing cutter life requires: (1) abrasivity and strength parameters for soil matrix and rock clasts, (2) methods of combining both, (3) proper selection of cutters and (4) modified TBM operation including use of boulder detection methods from the TBM to help make operation decisions. This paper presents approaches for addressing these factors sufficiently to improve tunneling success in mixed-face and cobbly-bouldery ground. Current laboratory abrasivity testing will be assessed along with equivalent quartz content correlations to soil matrix and rock clast abrasivity. New approaches to combining abrasivity testing of both the soil matrix and rock clasts for various cobble and boulder volume ratios will be suggested to estimate cutter life and intervention intervals. Methods for detecting boulders and using detection data to modify TBM operations to minimize boulder impacts are provided.

"Getting minerals out of ores is messy, but mineral processors learn to have fun with it. Celebrating the innate joys of the industry was the theme of this year’s Colorado MPD Conference. At the same time, attendees dug deeper for insights into problems that continue to dog the community, including tailings dam crises, water resource challenges, and a dwindling number of academics to teach and train the workforce (see box).Tailings dam crisesMatt Fuller of Tierra Group International Ltd. brought some of the audience to tears with his impassioned talk on “The Infamous Legacy of Upstream Tailings Dams,” which won the conference’s Lou Cope award for best paper. The talk was especially poignant coming on the heels of the January tailings dam failure in Vale S.A.’s Córrego do Feijão iron ore mine in Brazil, the latest in a series of catastrophic dam failures over the past decade that includes the Fundão dam failure in 2015.Noting that the two dams share a common characteristic — both are upstream tailing dams — Fuller explained the three basic dam construction methods and why certain upstream tailing dams are susceptible to failure (Fig. 1). The downstream, centerline and upstream methods denote the direction the centerline of the dam crest moves with each successive raise in elevation of the dam. With the downstream dam, the foundation for future raises is essentially the same as that of the starter dam, he explained. With the centerline dam, half of the dam is constructed on the same foundation as the starter dam, and with the upstream dam, each successive raise is built out over the top of the tailings.“Downstream dams are expensive to build because each successive raise is bigger, so the sustaining capex to build them keeps growing,” Fuller said. Many decades ago, mine owners realized they could construct a starter dam, put their tailings through a hydrocyclone, generate a coarse sand fraction and stack the sand over the top of the tailings to build the next raise. “Then, there is no sustaining capex, it all comes out of operations,” Fuller added. The footprint is smaller, and it is a favorable means of retaining the tailings."
