This Bureau of Mines publication reviews 237 papery on radiometric prospecting, which is the measurement of naturally occurring radioactivity in the earth's surface and its application to petroleum and natural gas exploration. Many theories and documented surveys are listed in both support and refutation of this reported phenomenon, and the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to obtain direct field information in order to determine the statistical credibility of a radiometric method of predicting petroleum accumulation.

Automobile manufacturers are developing Electrified Vehicles with light steel body structure designs that reduce mass and therefore greenhouse gas emissions over the vehicle’s entire life cycle. This raises the demand for the production and development of Advanced and Ultra High-Strength Steels (AHSS / UHSS) and Electrical Steels with increased permeability and reduced core loss to improve energy conversion efficiency. To meet this requirements the steel market is tending towards new generations of AHSS with improved formability (3rd generation AHSS) and high-silicon steels with higher strength and thinner products. With this growing demand for advanced high-strength steels and electrical steels, producers are faced with a unique and interesting challenge in producing materials that strain or exceed the capabilities of existing mill equipment and automation designed to produce low- to medium-carbon sheet. While specialty steel producers have known for decades how to process special high-strength steels and thinner gauges, this equipment typically does not offer the yield and productivity desired by the market, necessitating innovation in re-engineering existing equipment to meet the market demands more economically than new construction. In the case of cold rolling, this can be supported through variable roll geometries, more effective roll-gap lubrication technologies, application of strip heaters (Warm Rolling) to reduce risk for edge crack propagation and strip breaks as well as continuous rolling managed by state-of-the-art automation technologies.

Nowadays notorious technological growth is encouraging research natural materials in substitution to more usual synthetic ones. One of those initiatives is the vegetable fibers that have been studied for the replacement of glass and carbon fibers. This research addresses broadly the study of the natural fibers mechanics properties, but none study have been made with natural fabrics, such as the pure jute fabric used in Brazil to make ropes and carpets. This work aim to evaluate the mechanical behavior of jute fabric strips with different dimensions to be used as reinforcement into polymeric composites Lots of those fabric strips were subjected to tensile tests in order to obtain the tensile resistance for each strip size. The results obtained during the tests were satisfactory and indicated that 160 × 160 × 1 mm correspond to the best result and the perfect fabric strip for the composite reinforcement.

"The present and possible future commercial production of potash from various sources in the United Status is discussed below under the following heads:1. Potash from the saline lakes.(a) Nebraska lakes.(b) California lakes.(c) Other lakes.2. Potash as by-product from the cement kilns.3. Potash as by-product from the iron blast furnace.4. Potash from silicate rocks.(a) Feldspathic material.(b) Leucite rocks of Wyoming..(c) Sericite slates of Georgia.(d) Glauconite (greensand) of New Jersey.5. Potash from Alunite.6. Potash from organic sources other than kelp.7. Potash from kelp.In this discussion very little more than passing reference, if any, will be given to those projects which up to date have been developed only slightly, if at all, beyond the small scale laboratory stage, or for the development of which there appears to be very little financial and technical backing at the present time. Nether or not many of these proposed projects have merit can be determined only by an actual operating demonstration.Generally speaking, the potash industry of the United States has been hardly more than marking time since the armistice. This is, largely due to the fact that the consumers of potash have been expecting that heavy shipments of foreign potash to the United States would be resumed soon at somewhere near the pre-war prices, and they have not seen owing domestic potash at present prices for many months. The result has been that domestic producers have been unable to sell their product at even cost and many producers of potash have been obliged to close down. Thu Nebraska lake plants were closed down in February. The California saline plants were operating at below capacity, and the only large alunite plant is closed down. Even the cement plants have little or no inducements to recover the potash being lost in their waste gases and the production is very small at present.This condition will doubtless continue until a definite policy is decided upon as to the future importation of potash salts from Germany and. France. If unrestricted importation is allowed at prices even 50% greater than in 1913, only a very few, if any, of the domestic projects will be in position to compete with the foreign potash immediately, and the present industry will probably greatly decline with little or no prospect for a future resumption of the industry."

The Geological Survey is the oldest map making department in the Canadian Government service, and when organized in 1842, one of the first principles to be recognized was the absolute necessity of having good maps. The primary purpose of the Survey has always been geology; but because a graphic representation by means of maps makes the written report .more readily intelligible; because the correlation of known geological facts is often difficult or nearly impossible unless they can be represented on a map; and, because the public demand information shown in this way, the Geological Survey must continue to supply maps; and the supplying of these maps must be considered as an essential part of the work of the Survey. It is a commonly recognized principle of pedagogics that an appeal to the eye is quicker than one to the ear; that children (and others) learn more quickly when a thing is presented to them through the eye rather than through the ear. The application of this principle to the work of the Geological Survey is that, to a large number of people, the message of a map is more quickly grasped, is more readily intelligible, and is in many ways of more interest and value than is the same information in a report. I do not mean that the maps are of more importance than the reports.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the structural aspects of shafts and support systems using the finite-element technique. In situ field measurements in deep, vein-type metal mines show that rock stresses are often higher in the horizontal direction than the vertical, and unequal in the horizontal plane. These data and laboratory and field-determined physical properties were used as input to analytical studies. Various design and construction parameters were investigated to deter-mine the effect on shaft stability. Rectangular shafts were studied in detail to determine the effects of applied stress ratio, shaft orientation and dimension, influence of interbedded quartzite and argillite, and rock fracturing. Various support systems were analyzed, including concrete lining, timber, and steel sets. Circular configurations were investigated to evaluate yield zones and liner thickness. Elliptical shafts and time effects were briefly evaluated to illustrate shape and time effects and demonstrate the methodology. It is shown that the magnitude, direction, and ratio of applied stress and rock mass anisotropy are keys to determining shaft stability. A realistic conceptual framework was developed with which to examine the rock and support interaction in deep mine shafts. Structural analysis techniques overcome some of the historical difficulties with shaft de-sign by defining the field data requirements and structural sensitivity of various design and construction parameters.

Intensive work on the deoxidation of steel with manganese-silicon alloys by the U. S. Bureau of Mines has shown that the use of those alloys, which may be produced from our domestic manganese ores, would decrease the ferromanganese requirements of a very large tonnage of our steel by from 60 to 80 per cent and in some cases by 100 per cent. The open-hearth heats made with these alloys have been of excellent quality. The tonnage of our ferro-grade ores Which has been made available by the bureau's ore-dressing studies, combined with the products resulting from such processes as those developed by the bureau and by Bradley for Cuyuna ores, should easily fill our reduced ferromanganese requirements when manganese-silicon alloys and ordinary Spiegel are used in the way described in this report. There are no technical difficulties in the application of this practice, and any difficulties involved in its wide and immediate application would only be those arising from habituated ideas of the necessity of ferromanganese. General acceptance of this practice and development of the available sources of domestic ferro-grade material by already proven processes should make this country independent of foreign ores. Artisanal and small-scale mining is crucial for the mineral sector in South Africa, but it also presents both opportunities and challenges. This paper presents an overview of the South African artisanal and small-scale mining sector, the socio-economic significance of artisanal and smallscale mining, the regulatory environment, and the environmental impacts, which are currently the status quo of this sector in South Africa. The paper identified ways in which artisanal and small-scale mining can support local development, create employment opportunities, and reduce poverty. The case of informatisation, ecological damage, and social insecurity has shown social conflicts, potential land degradation, and criminal behaviour. Finally, the paper discusses the future of artisanal and small-scale mining in South Africa, which will largely depend on improved legislation, enhanced personnel capacity, and more sustainable practices to ensure that the positive outcomes of the industry outweigh the negative ones. These propositions include recommendations to all stakeholders, including the government, industry, and civil society, such as stricter environmental regulations, improved working conditions for miners, and the promotion of responsible mining practices.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a method of using inert gas to prevent the formation of explosive gas mixtures in auger highwall mining of coal. A combination of gasoline and diesel engine exhaust gases was introduced into the auger drill hole using a short section of pipe located at the collar. Gas samples were taken and analyzed on-site with infrared detectors for oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, and carbon monoxide. Evacuated bottle samples were also taken and analyzed by gas chromatography in the laboratory. These gas results were analyzed for explosibility. Coal samples from various depths were used to obtain the gas content of the coal using the modified direct method. Personal expo- sure to carbon monoxide was also monitored. The highest methane level observed was 9.55%. The levels of inert gas (carbon dioxide and nitrogen) were sufficiently high to prevent any ignition of the methane. Results showed that for all conditions during mining, gas concentrations were nonexplosive. The gas content of the coal was about 0.30 cm3/g. The maximum personal time-weighted average Sample for carbon monoxide was 20 ppm. This system provides a safe, inexpensive, simple method for preventing explosions during auger mining.

If a fire occurs outby an underground coal mine section, the immediate safe evacuation of miners from the working section should always be the first action during the rescue operation. Unfortunately, in many cases, the escape-ways (escape routes) dedicated for miners' evacuation are contaminated with fire byproducts from adjacent entries. The purpose of this paper is to present the ventilation control process that will maintain the escape-way free from contaminants and available for travel. Several scenarios in a different section on ventilation system arrangements are analyzed, discussed and presented. To perform these studies, the author used a mine-fire simulator, which provides a dynamic (in real time) representation of the fire's progress and also gives a display, a color-graphic visualization, of the spread of combustion products throughout the ventilation system. Presented and discussed in this paper, also, are ways in which the mine-fire simulator can be used as a training and teaching tool for miners and, particularly, for ventilation and safety personnel.

"INTRODUCTION This paper will discuss the topics in the recently released Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association’s (CEMA) Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials, 7th edition, that deal with safety and maintenance. The most effective way to improve conveyor safety is through designing out hazards in the earliest stages of a project. When the safest way to perform maintenance is also the easiest, mechanics will naturally take the obvious and least hazardous approach. IMPORTANCE OF ACCESS Studies have shown that mechanics spend almost one-third of their time accessing the components to be serviced and approximately 25% of all fatal conveyor accidents occur during maintenance1. Chapter 2 of Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials deals with design considerations. In Chapter 2 there are recommendations for access at the various sections of a typical conveyor for cleaning, inspection and maintenance. While, in some cases, providing access will increase the cost of the conveyor system there can be significant paybacks in reduced injuries, faster maintenance and easier cleaning. Piping and Conduit One of the significant recommendations in Chapter 2 for access is to restrict the mounting of piping and conduit to the conveyor structure in the Loading and Discharge zones of a conveyor. Piping and conduit are more permanent fixtures than maintainable components and should be located out of the way of components needing frequent maintenance. If electricians and pipe fitters are given convenient locations to make their runs they will natural use them. Flexible conduit and hoses can be used to connect to components from pipe racks and cable trays which further enhances maintenance. Access for Cleaning Another critical aspect of access is for cleaning. Approximately 33% of all fatal conveyor accidents occur while cleaning spillage and carryback under and around conveyors2. In the loading zone having sufficient height under the conveyor for cleaning increases the cleaning interval and allows for safer cleaning. In the discharge zone having adequate access for belt cleaning installation has a direct effect on the ability to install a proper cleaning system and perform maintenance."

Economy needs mineral raw materials in almost each sector of modern life. They can only be provided by mining activities. An increasing share of the total mining production will be by underground mining. The mineral deposits will be found at gradually greater depths, including all problems associated with them. It involves an increase in overburden pressure with subsequent rock stability problems and risks of structural collapse. There is a need for new and safe technologies for almost all parts of a modern mine. The mining industry faces a number of challenges which require technical solutions that encompass the entire network and include the economic, social and environmental issues. The industry needs a new image based on pioneering solutions and a modern structure that can exploit minerals at greater depths and promote both high productivity and safe working conditions. Funding has been secured from the European Commission for the I²Mine project. Work started in November, 2011. This initiative is designed to focus on the technological challenges that the mining industry is currently facing including the exploitation of ever deeper deposits and the aspiration for an invisible, safe, zero impact mine. The project comprises a consortium of 27 organisations from 10 European countries. I²Mine marks the start of a series of development activities aimed at realising the concept of an invisible, zero impact, deep mine. The extractive sector, still seen as being old fashioned and environmentally unfriendly, will show that mineral extraction and processing can be done in a highly innovative and sustainable manner with low impact underground and zero impact above ground. The concept of I²Mine is to develop innovative methods, technologies, machines and equipment necessary for the efficient exploitation of minerals and disposal of waste, all of which will be carried out underground. This will dramatically reduce the volume of surface transportation of both minerals and waste, minimising above ground installations and reducing the environmental impact. New eco-efficient technologies will be applied in order to make the entire mining process more efficient and environmentally sound. The concept is for an integrated mine, with the majority of the installations underground, and only the final product will be transported above ground to be shipped to the customer. Production waste will be treated and stored underground and gaseous emissions will be managed underground as far as practical. I²Mine will also focus on ideas and concepts that increase energy efficiency and decrease waste. The core of the project will be to develop breakthrough technologies for autonomous, highly selective, continuous mineral extraction processes and machinery based on new sensor technologies, face front separation as well as innovative concepts for mass flow management and transportation integrating state of the art technologies. The concept of an invisible, zero impact mine requires a refined process underground that selectively extracts the mineral thereby reducing waste. For this reason, improved extraction machines and near to face processing methods, including backfill procedures, need to be developed. These developments include rock mechanics and ground control solutions, incorporating health, safety and environmental issues.

Generally speaking, it is safe to address this conference as a conclave of Engineers, Owners' Agents, Governmental Representatives, and Contractors. As a group, we have assembled here to learn of our compatriots engaged in similiar underground operations throughout the United States and the World. We are here to learn of improved methods, higher technology, and better management. Through the acquisition of this knowledge, we each hope we can improve our own particular services, products and projects. This session is dedicated to a discussion of "Costs". The most apparent reason for a discussion of costs at this level is to expose subjects affecting costs and propose methods to reduce them. From that premise a contractor can identify three areas of discussion: design considerations, contract considerations, and governmental considerations. A fourth area of consideration is an introspective view of the contractor's role in the design construct process. Unnecessary costs and risks attributable to these areas are contributing excessively to ever increasing project and system costs. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS On April 20, 1977 the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago accepted proposals for the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan on Contract A and Contract B. This letting called for construction of over 33 km (21 miles) of the Mainstream Tunnel bored at 9.75 m (32 ft) to 10.67 m (35 ft.) in diameter. In the manufacture of steel by any process the refining period involves the partial elimination of the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon, by virtue of their reactions with ferrous oxide. At the end of this refining stage the metal consists chiefly of iron in which small amounts of these materials are dissolved. Unless some deoxidizer is added to the steel at this time, the reaction between carbon and ferrous oxide will continue with such force that it is impossible to form sound steel in the ingot molds. Instead, the product will exhibit a marked porosity due to the formation and trapping of carbon monoxide-the product of the reaction mentioned. However, if deoxidizers are added, steel may be obtained which is dense and free from gas bubbles. At the same time the deoxidation products will remain in the steel as impurities. For example, silicon additions form SiO2 or combinations of SiO2 and FeO. Additions of manganese form deoxidation products consisting of various proportions of MnO and FeO. It is also quite obvious that simultaneous additions of manganese and silicon will form oxide combinations either in the binary system MnO-SiO2 or in the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. Work at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board, involved the study of such deoxidizing reactions and their products. In this connection considerable information is necessary concerning FeO, MnO, SiO2, and Al2O3, and their various combinations. Some of the most needed data are the melting points of all of these materials. At the outset of this work ordinary methods of melting point determinations were found to be inadequate for various reasons, and the procedure finally selected involved the use of the micropyrometer with occasional corroboration by quenching methods. The reasons for this selection, together with a description of the apparatus, are given in the following pages.

The compressibility factors, Z, of helium, nitrogen, and helium-nitrogen mixtures in the three-dimensional space of temperature, pressure, and gas composition have been related to the Leiden form of the virial equation of state. The dependency of virial coefficients through the fifth on temperature and gas composition has been established for the temperature range 133.15° to 748.15° K. Compressibility factors, Z, have been computed from the equation of state and tabulated as functions of gas composition, pressure, and temperature. Tabular values of Z are presented for 30.00 through 100.00 percent helium for temperatures from 240° through 700° R for pressures from 14.696 through 3,050 psia and for temperatures from 720° through 1,300° R for pressures from 14.696 through 1,500 psia. Tabular values of Z are presented at increments of 5.00 percent helium and 20° R, and, for pressures greater than 50 psia, at increments of 50 psi.

In this paper is presented a review of the changes that have taken place in certain Canadian non-metallic mineral industries since 1909. The fifteen-year period 1909 to 1923, inclusive, has been selected for two reasons. In the first place, statistical treatment of the subject under review has been nearly uniform throughout the period. In the second place, this decade and a half is itself further subdivisible into three well marked quinquennial periods, the middle one covering the period of the great war when industrial conditions were greatly disturbed. It then becomes possible to institute certain comparisons between equal periods before and after the war disturbances. The items selected for inclusion in this review are certain of the more important members of that class of minerals usually grouped together under the heading of non-metallics. They are all minerals of which Canada is known to possess important resources, and which are indispensable to many of our greatest manufacturing industries.

I NDUSTRIAL explosives, as distinguished from military explosives, include high explosives and blasting powder. The high explosives which are best known are straight dynamite, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamite and permissibles. There are two kinds of blasting powder, saltpetre blasting powder and nitrate of soda blasting powder. Blasting powders are mechanical mixtures of nitrate of potash or nitrate of soda with sulfur and charcoal, highly compressed, granulated and glazed. They ignite from a spark and burn with relative slowness, the rate of burning and hence the rate of conversion into gases depending upon the size of the granulation and upon the degree of. confinement under which the powder is placed. High explosives, on the other hand, are chemical compounds which detonate; that is, when the explosive is subjected to a violent shock, provided in practice by a blasting cap or an electric blasting cap, the molecule of the essential ingredient, usually nitroglycerin, is disrupted and the energy and heat released cause any other explosive ingredients which may be present, such as ammoniuin nitrate or T.N.T., to decompose with a resultant evolution of gases at an extremely rapid rate varying from 6000 to 20,000 ft. per second.
