New and developing communication systems enable underground miners to not only connect to the surface from an increased communication coverage area but also to be discovered in the event of an emergency. Communication and tracking systems are required by MSHA regulations, aiming to enhance health and safety and routine production in underground operations. Modeling a mine?s potential communication coverage area will increase overall coverage and efficiency of the communication network itself. Modeling the propagation of wireless communications enables ideal broadcast locations to be found when designing a communications network. Strategic placement of broadcast devices results in a reliable communication network that can better withstand disruption in both daily operation and emergencies. This paper will discuss recent regulatory developments in underground coal communication systems, the implementation of these new technologies, and how communication system?s networks can be modeled and analyzed using computer simulations.

Many underground metal/nonmetal mines are using enclosed cabs on mining equipment to reduce the exposure of miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, some enclosed cab systems may not be meeting their expected efficiency in capturing DPM, which could be a result of inappropriate filter use, cab leaks, or insufficient pressurization. NIOSH investigated several types of filters for reducing DPM to determine which type had the best capture efficiency. The laboratory results indicated that a MERV 8 (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, as defined by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air- Conditioning Engineers) filter captured about 50 percent of the DPM, a MERV 16 filter collected 96-98 percent of the DPM, and two HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) grade filters captured over 99 percent of the DPM. NIOSH also performed a field study to measure the efficiency of two cabs at a limestone mine. The cab filtration systems of a loader and haul truck were found to be over 90 percent effective in removing DPM except under certain operating conditions when the efficiency was as low as 41 percent. Evidence seems to suggest that these conditions were when a window was open in the cab.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) delivers water to the San Francisco Bay Area through an aqueduct system extending from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the East Bay. This aqueduct system, the Mokelumne Aqueducts, are comprised of three 82-mile long steel pipelines. The portion of the aqueducts crossing the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is recognized to be vulnerable to seismic and flooding hazards. Previous studies evaluated alternatives for mitigating these hazards and increasing the reliability of the aqueducts for the next 100 years. The preferred solution involves construction of a 16.5-mile tunnel across the Delta and re-routing the existing aqueducts through this tunnel

Most geotechnical construction professionals are aware of piling using hydraulic drill rigs and the so-called Kelly drill mode. Kelly drilling has many advantages as it can work with a wide range of tools facing almost all types of soil and rock conditions. Kelly drilling can also deal with diameters up to 10 ft (3.00 m) and bigger or depths of more than 330 ft (100 m). Nonetheless, there is a concern about Kelly drilling as it is a relatively slow installation process. Therefore, an alternative piling method like Cased CFA (CCFA) Piles (Cased Auger Cast Piles) provides a significant advantage in terms of installation performance, schedule and cost saving potentials. Major application for the Cased CFA system is the secant pile wall construction. Against the traditional secant pile wall systems like fully cased bored piles or CFA secant piling the Cased CFA secant pile wall system has the advantage in cost and time against the fully cased system and in quality against the standard CFA system. This paper will describe the methodology and installation process in general as well as first reference projects carried out in the United States. This paper will present the results in cost and schedule saving using this method. In addition, we will also describe the limitations of this method. INTRODUCTION In the changing construction environment, companies are searching for new technologies or improvement of existing technologies to complete their projects in shorter time frames to provide a good economic solution. Especially with the focus of increasing urbanization, the aim of fast construction becomes more and more important. When thinking of piling, most people will have the same picture in mind: that of a hydraulic drill rig working in Kelly drilling mode; however, the perpetual drill rig development provides a number of options for the execution of specialist foundation projects, either for foundations or for pile walls when using single pass applications like CFA, Cased CFA and Full Displacement Piling (FDP). Single pass means, in general, that the tool is pushed and rotated into the ground to the final depth in one stroke. After reaching the final depth, concreting is started and concrete is pumped continuously while the tool is withdrawn.

"Geometallurgy brings together geologists, mine planners and process engineers to extract meaningful mineralogical and textural information from an orebody, with a view to predicting its metallurgical response. Preferably, automated analytical techniques, which provide mineralogical and textural information, should process a large number of samples quickly, relatively inexpensively and reliably. Microfocus X-ray computed tomography (µXCT) is capable of producing 3D volumetric information on texture and mineralogy that satisfies some of these criteria. µXCT has been used extensively to study the porosity and internal pore structure of iron ore pellets as part of downstream processing. It has not been widely applied to earlier mineralogical and textural analysis of unprocessed ore, due to the limited ability of X-rays to penetrate high-density samples. "The development of mining safety and health management as a recognized profession has been long in coming. Over the last 150 years, the mining industry has evolved from having individuals randomly involved in safety related work with no specific responsibilities or qualifications, on to the designation of individuals responsible for safety, regardless of knowledge, qualifications and experience and finally to today’s expectation that virtually every mine and mining company has designated individuals operating as safety and health professionals. Further, with the complexity, risk potential and moral expectations surrounding safety, people who address mine safety and health management are justifiably expected to function in a professional capacity including:1. Rendering a specialized service based on advanced knowledge and skill.2. Maintaining a high degree of obligation to those most affected by mine safety outcomes.3. Bound by an ethical code in working with the public, employers and miners.4. Maintaining confidentiality with an employer or client. This historical change parallels thedevelopment of other professions, e.g., attorneys, engineers, physicians, etc., with the exception that those professions require a license granted by a governmental agency, which is justified on the basis of public protection, in order to practice. Likewise, decisions made by today’s mine safety and health professionals, both directly and in association with other managers, clearly have a significant impact on the life and welfare of miners throughout the world.CertificationIn light of this, there is growing need to improve standards of competency and professionalism for those who work in mine safety and health management. An effective mechanism to accomplish this, other than licensure, is the use of accredited professional certification programs. There are many professional certification programs for safety and health throughout the world (Hale & Harvey, 2012). However, there is only one certification specific to mining —the Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP). The International Academy of Mine Safety and Health (ISMSH-SME) was formed with the purpose of developing and managing mining safety and health certification programs for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME). In 2016, following the discontinuation of the International Society of Mine Safety Professionals (ISMSP), which developed the Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) credential in the 1990s, the IAMSH-SME began the process of updating and relaunching the CMSP program. Among other work required to gain third-party accreditation both domestically and internationally, the IAMSH-SME has developed a new Body of Knowledge associated with mine safety and health management (Table 1)."

The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. The purpose of this research was to develop a system capable of detecting changes in the structure of rocks, leading to failure of mine roofs, and/or excavations. A prototype system was developed, field tested and delivered to the United States Bureau of Mines for further evaluation and research. This system is based on the analysis of acoustic signals generated on the surface of the roof by an impact device and which are reflected or backscattered by flaws and discontinuities in the rock. The specially designed impact source is capable of generating high frequency acoustic signals with excellent repeatability. The system can also be used in conjunction with conventional acoustic pulse transducers. The received signal is digitized and the data transferred to a minicomputer for processing and display. This capability allows the immediate determination of wave velocity and/or distance to a reflecting interface. Various data processing techniques such as averaging, differentiating, and comparing of different signals can be selected by entering the appropriate commands on the keyboard. Being a programmable system it is possible to implement more advanced signal processing techniques. All results as well as the signal are displayed on a CRT. Furthermore, a permanent record of the data can be generated on paper tape, which can be reentered and processed at a later date. A communications interface allows transmission of the sampled signal to a large scale re-mote computer. The system was tested extensively in the laboratory, and field tested at the York Canyon Coal Mine. These tests proved the feasibility of operation in the mining environment. Results indicate that further investigation and development will have to be undertaken to fully develop the potential of this system in satisfying the goals of this research.

WIDCO is a surface coal mine located near Centralia, Washington. The WIDCO preparation plant processes over 7 million tons of run- of-mine coal each year with a product yield averaging 72%. In the jig type preparation plant the fine refuse amounts to approximately 130 dry tons per hour of 28mesh by 0. This fine refuse material is thickened in a 160ft. diameter static thickener with the use of lime as a coagulant and organic polymer as a flocculant. Once thickened the fine refuse, which is predominately bentonitic clays, has been dewatered and disposed of using several different methods. These methods will be discussed and include vacuum disc filters, ponds, solid bowl centrifuges, belt filter presses and experiments with electrokinetic dewatering.

"Hydrogen (H2) gas released during battery charging can result in cross-interference for carbon monoxide (CO) sensors used for early fire detection and compromise the integrity of the mine atmospheric monitoring system (AMS). In this study, a series of laboratory-scale and full-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of different CO sensors to H2 gas. In the laboratory-scale experiments, constant H2 concentrations in the airflow, from 100 to 500 ppm, pass through sensors. While in the full-scale experiments, increasing H2 concentrations generated as a byproduct from charging the batteries at the battery charging station rise to the sensors under different ventilation scenarios. The H2 concentrations at the CO sensor location were measured using H2 sensors and were correlated with the CO sensor response. The effects of ventilation and sensor location on the CO sensors responses were also analyzed. The results of this study can help mining companies to select appropriate CO sensors and improve the deployment of these sensors to ensure the safeguard of underground miners. INTRODUCTION As many types of battery-powered mining equipment such as scoops and shield haulers are used in underground mining operations, charging stations are required to charge the equipment batteries. These batteries are of lead acid chemistry. A safety issue exists with the battery charging stations as all lead acid batteries produce flammable H2 gas during the normal charging process. Overcharging or excessive heat can quickly cause batteries to produce even more H2. If H2 is not appropriately diluted or dispersed, it builds up, and the risk of fire and explosion increases. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulation (30 CFR Part 75.340) requires that battery charging stations should be housed in noncombustible structures or be equipped with a fire suppression system. When a fire suppression system is used, the battery charging stations must be ventilated with intake air that is directed into a return air course or ventilated with intake air that is monitored for CO or smoke using an AMS. The monitoring of intake air ventilating battery charging stations should be done with sensors that are not affected by H2."

Introduction The importance of coal in our economy is well established, but it may not .be so generally realized how important a part it plays in our daily life. Select a product - any product - and, if it is made in America, bituminous coal has touched it first. Everywhere we will find coal, derivatives of coal, or functions made possible by coal. Apart from the well known major uses of coal for domestic purposes, coking, utilities, railways, and manufacture of steel and cement, there are over 200,000 products derived from coal, from lipstick colours to nylon products and perfumes. An item of interest is the recent action of the Canadian Government in voting $90,000 for development of coal deposits in Yukon Territory to make coal available to the settlers in that area. The value of this move, in case of some emergency, is very evident. Coal in its several stages of formation as peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, semi-bituminous, semi-anthracite, and anthracite, has been used for centuries. Coal, as such, was not very well known to the ancients. First reference to "magic stone', or coal, was in 371 BC by Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle. This substance was said to burn like wood coal or charcoal and was used by the smiths. The first record we have in modern times was in 852 AD, when sea coal was gathered by the cowled monks of Durham, in Britain, and even at that time a major problem was transportation. Our first record of coal in this continent was near Richmond, Virginia, in 1700. Commercial mining was not under way, however, until 1750. The anthracite fields (presumably in Pennsylvania) were opened in 1793. Even so, there was no extensive mining until about the year 1820. The famous Pocahontas coalfields were opened in 1883. The earliest record of coal mining in Canada is about 1746.

The fracture behavior of high strength Al7050 alloy was investigated at room and elevated temperatures using small size, V-notched tear (called Kahn specimen) and compact tension, CT, specimens, respectively.To study the elastic-plastic behavior of the alloy, the tensile test was also performed on the sub-sized cylindrical tension test specimen. The microstructure of the alloy was examined using optical- and scanning electron- microscopy. The rupture mechanisms and crack path were also studied by examination of specimens' fracture surfaces using SEM. The microstructure examination revealed equiaxed grains and some elongated grains in rolling direction, with the areas of partial re-crystallized grains where coarse intermetallic particles are mostly found.In general, fracture surfaces were indicative of dimpled ductile type. Considering the fractographs of tensile specimens, the void growth mechanism is also dominant in fracture of these specimens. Nevertheless, in some regions, smooth areas can be observed due to the friction during rupture process. The results of mechanical tests at RT made the evaluation of tear strength to 0.2 % tensile yield strength ratio, as a measure of notch toughness, available. According to elevated temperature, 150°C, test results and plots of log da/dt vs. log KI , the crack propagation behavior over discrete ranges of crack growth rates could be assumed linear and then be obeyed as a power law equation in the form of da/dt = A (KI)n .

The use of membranes in wastewater systems has increased rapidly in recent years. Microporous or semi-permeable barriers augment conventional chemical or biological processes to meet stringent treatment targets. These developments enable elegant solutions to wastewater discharge challenges and extend the scope of water recycle redressing the overall water balance and operational economics Wastewater treatment processes are discussed by reference to the spectrum of waterborne contaminants and the respective membrane separation capabilities. The role chemical pre-treatment to enable physical separation of metals with micro-filtration (MF) is described and how integration of MF with reverse osmosis (RO) is used to control a broader range of dissolved contaminants Membrane configurations are considered apropos function, operational economics and sustainability. These features are exemplified with case studies. Firstly, MF alone following chemical precipitation for the removal of heavy metals, then MF onto two stages RO of different configurations for TDS reduction and waste volume minimisation and finally an open channel RO alone for the reduction of inorganic COD from a leach stream.

Automation is in everywhere nowadays, including within companies and industries, and is therefore fundamental and essential for production, quality and process control of them. There are many ways to automate a production line or a machine can be through relay logic, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and even more modern microcontrollers with native Internet of Things (IoT) support can be used. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach? A PCB was created using more modern microcontrollers programmed in C, C ++ and Whiting language to simulate a replacement of a PLC in an actual machine. Having a very positive result, being able to handle the machine manually via Wi fi besides being able to also perform a real-time monitoring of the machine's motors through the mobile phone, thus entering the IoT and fitting into the Industry 4.0.

"INTRODUCTION Cobalt is an essential metal in the normal industrial ac¬tivity of the United States. Being an important constituent of high-speed steels and other cutting-tool materials, it becomes of critically essential importance during periods of national emergency. 3/ The Presidential order of December 20, 1940, included cobalt among other essential commodities that could be exported only under license. The Executive order 4/ listed cobalt metal, cobalt oxide, and alloys containing more than 5 per¬cent cobalt as being within the licensing requirements.There was no domestic marketed production of, cobalt products from 1931 until 1940 when the Pyrites Co. 5/ produced some cobalt oxide. The major portion of the domestic cobalt requirements has been obtained from Northern Rhodesia, the Belgian Congo, and French Morocco. 6/ The uncertainty of sea transportation from those sources of supply demanded that steps be taken to obtain from domestic raw materials an adequate supply of cobalt for use in the materials required for production of indispensable machined war metal products. In connection with the national policy for attaining self-sufficiency of strategic and critical materials, the Bureau of Mines, Boulder City, Nev., Experiment Station initiated studies to recover cobalt from the low-grade oxidized cobalt deposits in the Goodsprings district, Nevada. Hewett 7/ reported occurrence of cobalt specifically in the Blue Jay, Columbia, Copper Chief, and Highline mines and generally over a widespread area in the district."

This paper discusses the requirements for a successful simulation modelling study, and the steps involved in the modelling process. Advantages and disadvantages of simulation are described, and a case study highlights how not to go about it. Two other case studies, for a decline truck haulage and a block caving production operation, are used to illustrate the types of variables whose impact may be investigated. Typical results are presented to indicate the sorts of presentation styles the author has found useful for conveying study results to project sponsors. Standard spreadsheet charting techniques can be very useful in this respect, but the possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the study team.

THE zinc-smelting industry of the United States has grown very rapidly in recent years and bids fair to outrival that of all other countries in the future. On account of the geographical situation of the chief ore-supplies, the industry may be divided into two main groups, the eastern and the western. The eastern and older group includes the works of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia, which practically control their own ore-supply. The western group includes the works of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin and Indiana, which do not control their own ore-supply, but are compelled to buy the ore in the open market. It is for this reason that the western zinc-smelting industry has been undergoing continual changes since its inception 40 years ago. During the early discoveries of lead- and zinc-ore in the lead- and zinc-districts of Wisconsin and northern Illinois, the zinc-ore (sinithsonite or " bone " as the miner calls it) had no value and was considered waste; but later, when this ore was found in large quantities, it attracted the attention of metallurgists, which finally resulted, during the early sixties, in the building of the Matthiessen & Hegeler Zinc Works at LaSalle, Ill., the pioneer zinc-works of the West. A few years later, zinc-ore was discovered associated with the lead-ore in Jefferson county, southeastern Missouri, which started the industry at Carondelet or South St. Louis. Still later, the discoveries of zinc-ore in the lead-ore region, first' at Granby and then around Joplin, lead to the introduction of the industry in the southwest Missouri and Kansas districts. At first the development of the industry was slow, but it progressed steadily and it is now one of the leading metallurgical industries of the middle West.

Increased awareness of a healthy work environment is common to all industries and the stone industry is no exception. The presence of operating diesel equipment, welding, stone production blasting, and silica dust in a working environment all contribute to air quality issues in underground stone mines. Particularly recognized is the exposure of workers to diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent regulations call for a DPM standard of 160TC ug/m3 (TC = Total Carbon). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of these mines and consequently reduce the exposure of workers to harmful airborne contaminants. The results have shown that the ventilation of underground stone mines can be significantly enhanced using improved ventilation controls and techniques. Large-opening stone mines present specialized ventilation challenges because their entries are much larger than in other types of mines. Most stone mines have entries about 40 feet wide and up to 30 feet high, with bench areas that may extend even higher. These large entries present the positive opportunity to move large air quantities at relatively low mine fan pressures resulting in lower fan horsepower and reduced operating costs. However, the difficulty in ventilating large-opening mines is that even with large air volumes, the air velocity is often less than 100 feet/minute. Higher ventilation velocities more quickly dilute and remove contaminants from the face areas. Higher ventilation airflow velocities can be achieved by effective ventilation planning and proper choice of ventilation fans.

§ 22. THe results published in Professor Howe's paper10 of our determinations on the Ac3 and Ar3 points for a series of commercial carbon steels " containing manganese in varying proportion, represent the average temperatures found by taking several (4 or 5) heating and cooling curves. The accompanying curves, Figs. 6 and 7, are, for each steel, the first heating and cooling curves as obtained by the inverse-rate method of Osmond, using a cylindrical chronograph sensitive to 0.1 sec. for recording time. Simultaneous observations were also taken by the differential method with a platinum neutral and plotted by Rosenhain's derived differential method and gave substantially the same results, the curves having sensibly the same contours in both cases.12 The observations were taken in vacuo on cylinders 5 by 1 in. in length bored to center with a 1/8-in. hole to receive porcelain insulated thermo-couple, and inclosed in an out- and in-glazed Berlin porcelain tube heated electrically by platinum foil wound on the tube. The vacuum was usually better than 0.1 mm. The heating and cooling of the furnace was automatically controlled by a salt-water rheostat with shaped electrodes, giving a uniform rate of heating and cooling.
