Extensive thick lignite apparently lies within 250 feet of the land surface in Dyer, Lake, Lauderdale, Obion and Tipton counties. Information on geology, land use, soils, groundwater and instability is compiled, along with a bibliography. A test and monitoring site was investigated at Fort Pillow Prison in Lauderdale County. Analyses were made of lignite, overburden, associated water and leachate. Lignite has high BTU (about 7800) and low sulfur (1.1% avg.). A year or more of data are presented on rainfall, water levels, and chemistry of surface water, groundwater, leachate and water from test pits. Main potential environmental problems are quality of surface water, and possibly shallow groundwater. The main aquifer of the region will likely be un-affected by mining. Low transmissibility of shallow aquifers will minimize lowering water levels of wells. Soil reclamation and conservation should be readily accomplished, Dangerous earthquakes have a low probability and mines are not significantly more hazardous than steep bluffs.

Traditionally in coal processing jigs have been used to clean the coarse coal fraction, the +3/8" or +1/4" material. Today with the advent of modern fine coal jigs in the United States, its place was moved from the coarse to the inter- mediate coal circuit, the 3/8" x 100 mesh. The most economical coarse coal circuit to build and operate is a heavy media bath circuit. The following table summarizes the cost per raw coal ton processed for a coarse coal jig circuit, and a coarse coal heavy media bath circuit. The flowsheets used to compare these two circuits are shown in Figures 1 and 2.

Discussions on reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction (RPEEE) include the CRIRSCO 2019 reporting template, JORC 2012, SAMREC 2016, CIM 2019 Guideline, and Regulation SK-1300. These reporting codes all conform to the principles of reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. To demonstrate that all mineral resources align with the RPEEE principles, the Competent Person is responsible for endorsing the mineral resource estimate. Moreover, establishing mineral resources and RPEEE requires technical input from numerous technical specialists, such as mining and geotechnical engineers, metallurgical engineers, social and environmental specialists, financial and governmental practitioners, and more. The aim is to improve the transparency of the disclosure of mineral resources and guarantee the investor or potential investor that the reporting of mineral resources is based on reliable technical, economic, environmental, social, and other relevant factors. This paper discusses the important protocols and definitions in some international reporting codes for the purposes of developing a guide memoire that will assist the Competent Person to interpret, establish and apply RPEEE appropriately and easily.

Continuous monitoring of carbon monoxide and other fire-related parameters by means of an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) is used in the mining industry for early fire detection. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed a direct method to calculate the fire heat release rate (HRR) when a mine fire is close to the AMS sensors, but this method is only applicable to the case where a fire occurs in AMS-monitored airways. This paper presents an improved method for determining the fire HRR using AMS sensor data at any location downstream of the fire. The method was validated using a full-scale diesel fire test conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine at NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division.

OF the many items of information necessary to the successful management of the blast-furnace, few are more important than knowledge of the location and movement of the stock-line: whether the furnace is full and has. been kept so; whether the stock is settling regularly or slipping; and, if slipping, how often it has slipped, at what times, and how far at each time. To obtain these data, a man is sometimes stationed at the top of a. pair of mechanically-filled furnaces, simply to watch and gauge them by hand in the old-fashioned way. - A more recent practice is the suspension of test-rods from ropes leading over pulleys to the ground-level, where the ropes are wound on small drums with graduated peripheries and provided with crank-handles, whereby the skip-man or some other person can quickly and conveniently gauge the position of the stock-line in the furnace. I believe the credit for this great improvement belongs to Messrs. McClure & Phillips of Sharon, Pa., who were, as far as I know, the first to apply it, and who have a patent for it. The valuable indications gained by application of the Uehling pyrometer to the down-comer are Dot to be ignored; but the information thus furnished is somewhat indi¬rect, and there is no scale for the translation of "top-tempera¬tures " into " feet down." Moreover, this apparatus as a whole is delicate, and the cost of its installation and maintenance is high. If the record furnished by the Uehling pyrometer is not in the most desirable form, the test-rods, on the other hand, give no record at all, except through the memory, or notes of a man who, to say the least, is not gauging continuously, and who may omit to report an improperly low stock-line, if it be due to a fault of his own.

The system and plants for mining, crushing, concentrating, transporting via a slurry pipeline, filtering and shiploading 7.5 million metric tons of iron ore per year are fully described. The mode of operation and the problems encountered in such a transfer of North American technology to developing countries are analyzed. Difficulties encountered during construction are discussed and the progress milestones made over a two-year period are enumerated.

When a drilling well strikes a horizon in which there is a large volume of petroleum or natural gas under high pressure, danger of a blowout with disastrous results is imminent unless proper precautionary measures are taken. The history of oil-swell drilling has been marked by many blow-outs and wild wells, some of which-have caught fire and burned for long periods. Such incidents nearly always make headline news, but ordinarily few persons realize that what to them is an interesting newspaper item may entail great financial loss to the operator and frequently loss of life or personal injury to members of the drilling crew and others in the vicinity of the well. The blow-out, wild well, and crater are dreaded specters to every thoughtful person in the oil industry because of danger to life and property, underground damage to surrounding wells, dissipation of reservoir energy, and waste of irreplaceable natural resources that blow to the air or migrate to barren formations. Every operator drilling in high-pressure fields must be on the alert always to forestall any conditions that may lead to a blow-out, and his vigilance must not cease until a well is completed and oil, gas, or both are flowing to storage or market.

Surface water management and drainage is a key aspect of mine rehabilitation and closure planning. In the authors’ experience, drainage related problems are amongst the most common forms of failure in mined landscapes. The appropriate design of surface water infrastructure is therefore a key focus of practitioners. While there is currently a trend towards distributed drainage networks and avoiding hard engineered structures, in many situations (especially for existing landforms) engineered drainage structures cannot be avoided. Rotary kilns are continuous process equipment used on calcining of nickel ore. The chemical and physical reactions are created by means of heat up the material to predetermined temperatures. Tertiary air fans are attached to the kiln shell to maintain oxidizing/reduction conditions. Special ducts orientate the air flow inside the kiln. In the present work, two types of failure on distinct tertiary ducts mounted on the same kiln are reported. Chemical analysis, hardness test, metallographic and fractographic examinations were carried out. Fabrication related problems and creep were identified as the root causes of damages.

The method used to assess the reactivity of lime was evaluated to gauge it usefulness as a quality control tool. The effect of particle sizes, different lime and water masses for a fixed s:l ratio and the same for various s:l ratios on the reactivity values obtained, were investigated. An attempt to introduce the amount of grit produced during the slaking reaction as an additional measure of limeís quality and reactivity, proved to be unsuccessful. It was also found that the relative amount of lime slaked during the different tests was independent of the reactivity value of the lime. The investigation confirmed the usefulness of the accepted test procedure as are liable method to measure the reactivity of lime, despite various reservations expressed from a theoretical point of view.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is currently investigating the electrochemistry of mineral flotation. A significant need in this area is greater reliability of sensors. The USBM is testing electrolytic methods to clean and condition redox-sensing electrodes to improve the reliability and extend the service life of these instruments in the harsh physical and chemical environment of mineral processing slurries. A novel method for removing scale from fouled electrodes has been developed that includes anodic polarization to 1.2 V versus the Ag/ AgC1 reference potential, followed by brief potentiodynamic conditioning. Laboratory results show that this technique removes calcarious deposits from gold sensing electrodes and returns the electrodes to useful service within approximately 10 min. Mechanical abrasion to remove the scale is thereby avoided.

The large massive sulphide deposits present a formidable challenge to the economic geologist. They represent such huge concentrations of iron, sulphur, base metals and precious metals that it is difficult to conceive how they were derived from the crust or mantle of the Earth. The problem of the origin of massive sulphide deposits has generated a geological controversy which has lasted two hundred years and shows no sign of abating. The economic incentive to solve this problem is great, as the massive sulphide bodies are the moat important source of the world's zinc, lead, and silver, as well as yielding large amounts of copper and gold. Using the criteria of abundance, size, age distribution and gross value of contained metals, the predominant sub-group of the massive sulphide deposits is that which comprises the crudely conformable pyritic (or pyrrhotitic) deposits which occur in stratified volcanic and sedimentary rocks or their metamorphosed equivalents. Examples of this sub-group are: the Buchans, Bathurst, Noranda, Kidd Creek, Flin Plon and Sullivan deposits of Canada; the Mt. Isa and Broken Hill orebodies of Australia; the Cyprus, Rio Tinto, Meggen and Rammelsberg deposits of Europe; Ducktown and the United Verde in United States; and the Kuroko deposits of Japan.

"Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully under stood. Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the Major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these-actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed sub¬jects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting dis¬ease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the ex¬pression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). CUBA'S lateritic iron ores, occurring on the northern coast of that island, though known to the Spaniards. did not receive any general attention until the close of the Spanish-American War. Preliminary studies of these deposits at that time indicated that the limonite contained small percentages of nickel and chrome, and it ryas subsequently discovered that although the average nickel content was only approximately 0.6 per certain limited areas of ore were suffiniently high in nickel to be considered commercial provided a suitable process fur its recovery could be developed. Early in 1937, Pardners Mines Corp. began a series of investigations which led to the development of such a process. Coincidentally, this company acquired option' on certain properties in the Levisa Bay and Moa Bay regions and conducted a systematic campaign of exploration by test pits and hand-auger holes in the course of which an aggregate of 90.000.000 tons of ore was developed in eight deposits.

The combination of laser welding with Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMA W) forms the hybrid laser-OMA W welding. This process is an attractive tool with a high potential in welding lightweight structures, especially for aluminum alloys. For five years, this technology has increasingly attracted interest in both, industry (aeronautics, automobile, metal industries producing large structures) and academia (universities and research centers). Hybrid laser-OMA W welding process is generally accepted for its robustness, efficiency and flexibility. Coupling of a deep-penetrating laser beam with the heat and molten metal feeding of GMA W significantly expands the original welding application range of lasers. Its main advantages compared to the two individual components are deep and stable weld penetration, gap-bridging ability improvement, low distortion and easy filler metal addition. Hybrid welding allows a much wider groove tolerance compared to laser welding, especially for aluminum welding. Moreover, the reduction in distortion decreases the post-welding rectification needed and makes the assembly easier. In addition, if metallurgical factors are critical, the weld composition can be balanced with filler metal, decreasing the hot cracking susceptibility of some aluminum alloys. The combination of these two welding processes can also improve the weld bead shape quality (including the elimination of undercut), possibly reduce the porosity and increase the welding speed. This article reviews the recent works about the laser-OMA W hybrid welding of aluminum alloys. After a brief presentation on the interaction mechanisms between a laser beam and an electric arc, the paper depicts the typical welding parameters and experimental methods along with their characteristics.

Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed the Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent and newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 27-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corp.?s (TECs) estimated life for TPS. That 27-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd. (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed. After assuming operation of the mine in 2008, Thiess began a review of Meandu?s remaining reserves and found considerable coal available with economic potential. Working jointly with TEC, Thiess performed several analyses on Meandu and subsequently the Kunioon coal reserves. The results changed TEC?s decision from expediting Kunioon?s construction to instead continuing Meandu?s operation for up to 15 additional years.

NOW that the dust of World War II has settled and we and our allies are faced with extravagant losses of men, money, and materials, virtually the only hope that the United States and Britain have in the way of reparations lies in the capture of industrial, technical, and scientific secrets. Even during the war American and British scientists and technicians gained access to German factories, questioned German personnel, studied German documents, and endeavored generally to keep pace with new discoveries in science, industrial technology, and process development. Under various agencies this work continued for two years after the war. Altogether at least 600 American scientists and industrialists have gone to Germany and brought back reports and several times as many British, Canadian, and. Australian investigators have been similarly engaged under co-operative arrangements designed to assure the maximum of coverage with a minimum duplication of effort. As a result of these investigations and document studies, about 500 or 600 reports have been prepared on metallurgical and allied subjects. Those by American authors or joint teams have been listed in the annotated Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, issued by the Office of Technical Services in the U. S. Department of Commerce. Many of the British reports are also available in this country through the same office or through a British representative in New York. Line-of-sight radio control has received widespread acceptance for use in many mining methods because today’s technology offers improved economics and personnel safety. Significant advances in higher autonomy for mining machines are not currently seeing widespread use even though they offer great future potential. With autonomous capabilities being a longer-term goal, a logical sequence of advances based on TeleRemote control is proposed. Under Tele - Remote control, the operator is in direct control of the machine at all times. Three levels of Tele - Remote control systems are presented including line-of-sight, extended line-of-sight, and full load-haul-dump applications. Distributed control and sensing subsystems arranged in a vehicle control area network support incremental system expansion through the three levels of TeleRemote control and prepare the machine for integration of higher levels of automation as mature technology becomes available. This approach allows full exploitation of today’s mining automation technology with a flexible future growth path.
