Respirable coal dust has been long recognized as a leading cause of multiple lung diseases. Efforts aimed at reducing dust concentration in underground mines have been made, but increases in coal workers’ pneumoconiosis incidence rates over the last 20 years among U.S. miners are concerning. Dust deposition and water spray suppression are two types of dust removal mechanisms in underground mining activities. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the respirable dust decay characteristics during deposition and suppression processes in a confined dust chamber. Dust concentration and size distribution were monitored continuously throughout each 60-minute test. A number-basis particle size distribution was used for analysis to capture the changes of smaller size fractions within the investigated dust sample. This study found that around 62.1% of respirable dust particles were deposited at the end of the deposition test. In addition, the final deposition rate for very fine particles can be less than 20%. The results from the suppression test indicate that larger particles were removed quickly; however, sub-micron particles remain suspended through the 60- minute water spray, and particles under 0.5 µm can be considered irremovable dust under single-spray operation conditions. This study also observed the resuspension of a significant amount of sub-micron particles by the water spray. The results of this study provide basic information for improving dust control strategies and can be utilized to improve the water spray performance for reducing airborne dust levels.

Sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, more commonly known as soda ash, is the most important of the alkalies. Sulfuric acid is the only heavy chemical, Soda ash enters the market either as the natural product or as a manufactured derivative of common salt. Notwithstanding their common occurrence in closed basins of the Western States, natural sodas are produced at present by only four firms, all in the same California area, and satisfy only 4 percent of domestic demand for soda ash; soda ash made from salt supplies 96 percent of the requirements. The impossibility in wartime of routing all westbound American shipping through the Panama Cami.l has curtailed Pacific Coast receipts of soda ash and-increased the importance of local resources of natural carbonates. One of the most promising of ·these is the recently discovered trona (sodium sesquicarbonate)· deposit 2o·mnes· west of Green River, Wyo. Reserves are likely to run into hundreds ·of million·s of tons, and the deposit probably could be worked by the room-and~pillar· system of mining, like common salt or coal. • • Raw materials ·ne·cessary for manufacturing synthetic soda ash occur closely associated in m·afiy parts· bf the United 8tates. Shock wave physics is an important part of air-deck behavior since the bulk explosives in the column impart a shock into the air-deck where the air shock then passes through the air-deck at a rapidly attenuating velocity. Through both high-fidelity modeling and shock physics theory it is shown that the resulting pressure in the air-deck is two orders of magnitude less than the detonation pressure of the explosive. The induced air blast reflects from the bottom of the borehole and this reflected pressure, even though doubled, is still approximately two orders of magnitude less than the detonation pressure. Air-shocks will ring back and forth in the air-deck for a few tens of milliseconds while the adjacent explosive column(s) are detonating. Transmission of the initial shock through the air along with reflections is an intensive energy consuming process. Energy balance results in shock heating of the air and a temperature increase. However, the increased temperature of the air is also orders of magnitude less than that of the explosive detonation products immediately behind the detonation front. Replacing high energy explosives with zero energy air-decks in a blasthole will always have a negative impact on the adjacent rock fragmentation and movement.

"In this paper, a mobile heat treatment furnace from Akkermans Gloeitechniek, a Dutch company, was simulated with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The furnace is cylindrical with four oil burners, and large metal products such as dredging pumps and impellers can be flexibly heat treated to obtain required microstructure and mechanical properties through stress relief, annealing, hardening and tempering. The furnaces are exposed to the open air, and thus the heat loss becomes significant and varies from day to day and from season to season. Since the temperature of the metal products to be heat treated can only be measured on the surface, the temperature evolution inside the metal could not be tracked in practice. CFD simulation provides a useful tool to predict the temperature evolution within the metal pieces and within the combustion space of the furnace. Energy distribution and heat loss can be subsequently estimated. An overall energy balance through temperature measurement indicted relatively low energy efficiency. Especially during the soaking period, the high energy supplied is barely used to compensate the heat loss of the furnace to maintain a constant temperature of the metal piece. The current CFD modeling aims to give advice on how to modify the design and optimize the operation to reach higher energy efficiency and low heat loss. The CFD model consists of turbulent combustion model, radiation model in participating media, and conjugate heat transfer between the combustion space and solid metal. Temperature measurement was carried out to provide thermal boundary conditions and overall energy balance of the operation. After the model validation with temperature measurement within the combustion space and metal surfaces, furnace optimization will be conducted.IntroductionHeat treatment is a common practice in metal production and manufacturing industries. Disk-cutter experiments were performed on five rock types ranging in compressive strength from 9,000 psi to 27,000 psi. A specially constructed testing machine called a linear-cutter apparatus (LCA) was designed to load and traverse a free-rolling disk cutter across a sawed rock surface. The LCA was instrumented to measure the vertical and horizontal forces acting on the cutter during the run.. "The air classification of moist bulk materials is addressed in the literature insufficiently. Therefore a feasibility study investigated the influence of feed moisture on the separation efficiency expecting a reduction with higher moisture content in the feed. Two iron ore samples were characterized in terms of the nature of bonding of moisture as well as its effect on the agglomerate strength. The classification tests themselves were conducted with two dynamic laboratory air classifiers at cut sizes from 45 to 110 µm and a moisture of the feed material between 0 to 10 wt.-%. The quality of classification was assessed by split factor, cut size, separation efficiency, moisture of both products, as well as the yield of the fines as product fraction in a corresponding processing plant. An initial approach was found for a technological implementation: A sufficient drying of a moist feed can be realized simultaneously to the pneumatic transport inside the classifiers. In the present case the drying effect and dispersion intensity was sufficient to provide good separation results up to 3 wt.-% feed moisture. An additional drying step was necessary beyond 3 wt.-%.INTRODUCTIONSpecific information about the influence of moisture in air classifiers is very rare. Mostly only dry products are processed and/or drying prior to classification is recommended. Apart from the specific influence of the feed moisture a lot of literature can be found regarding air classification itself. Altogether air classification can be divided into several sub-process (Leschonski, 1977):- dosage of the feed material,- dispersing the solid feed material into a gas stream,- feeding the dispersed material into the classification zone by pneumatic conveying,- separation of coarse and fine particles, and- separation of fine particles from gas.For wet feed particles also drying plays an important role. Interesting for the present investigation are the humidity of the feed and its influence on the single sub-processes."

Zirconium has possible use in industry where severe corrosion conditions are encountered because it resists attack from a variety of corrosive environments. However, very little experimental testing has been done to evaluate the corrosion behavior of zirconium when simultaneously subjected to high tensile stresses and exposed to corrosive environments. This investigation was initiated for an evaluation test, but was limited to environments consisting of ferric chloride solutions which were known to attack zirconium and were shown to promote stress-corrosion cracking in preliminary tests. Tests for cracking susceptibility were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to show the effect of stress, solution concentration, air aeration of solution, and the method of mechanical processing. Tensile stress was applied to the specimens by a constant-load method which proved more reliable than a constant-strain method.

WHAT is written here features some of the things that I would say if I were to de- liver a Presidential address during the Annual Meeting to be held this month in New York. I am aware that custom favors written rather than vocal delivery of such a discourse; and, as this accords exactly with my own preference, I assure readers that they will never be called upon to hear these remarks spoken- anyhow, not by me. My year as President is drawing to a close. As I look back I like to classify and analyze the impressions that have been left with me. It has been a delightful and fascinating experience to me personally; I have appreciated the courtesies and aids, and have been deeply gratified at the honors accorded me. Perhaps the source of greatest satisfaction is the opportunity I have had to sense more about the provinces of this Institute and about the useful functions of the profession that it represents. For 38 years I have been a member. I served two terms as Director-one in 1914-'16 and again in 1927-'29. I have been honored by selection as a Saunders Medalist. I thought I was reasonably familiar with the functions, the ideals, and the activities of the Institute. But the things that I have discerned during the past year have dispelled that conceit. I still think that, a year ago, I was as well informed as most members; but since then I have had the rare privilege of executive service and insight. That has given me a perspective that I feel can be obtained in no other way-as I think the illustrious engineers who have preceded me in office will agree. I wish that I had the power to translate to every member somewhat of the feelings of pride in our organization that a year as President cannot help but instill.

Since the days of Adam Smith and Milton Friedman the discussion of corporate citizenship and sustainability has been flooded with multiple contradictions, with proponents of sustainability saying that it is a crucial cog in the business strategy, while those against, maintain that æthe business of business is businessÆ and therefore sustainability issues are just add-ons. Sustainability arises from a deeply held vision by corporate leaders that businesses can and should play a role beyond just making money. Businesses should embrace the understanding that everything that a company does has an impact both internally and externally (communities, employees and customers), and the natural environment. This paper highlights the approach that led to a view that there is a contradiction between profitability, sustainability and community development, and we provide a further argument to the contrary. This argument is based on a comprehensive literature review of over three decades by various scholars linking corporate social performance and corporate financial performance. Driefontein Gold MineÆs approach is that of linking the community development, natural environmental and employee well-being initiatives and projects to the mineÆs business strategy. The paper further highlights the coordination and implementation mechanism of sustainability at the mine where the accountability lies with the head of the mine operations. A two pronged approach is employed where there is an internal dialogue on sustainability between the various departments coordinated by the sustainable development department and an external tri-sector partnership with local government, interested and affected parties and the mine. These approaches are closely linked to the contributions towards the mineÆs financial bottom line.

When heated in the absence of oxygen, pyrite from refractory gold concentrates decomposes endothermically to pyrrhotite, releasing sulphur. The decomposition starts at the particle surface and progresses inwards, leaving an adhering layer of porous pyrrhotite. Use of the conventional shrinking-core model implicitly assumes a negligible partial pressure of sulphur in the bed, but this pressure is in fact at least equal to the equilibrium vapour pressure of sulphur over pyrite, constituting the principal control of the rate of decomposition. Further experiments showed a decrease in reaction rate as the conversion increased. Both phenomena are attributed to the persistence of non-isothermal conditions in the fluidised bed during pyrolysis, caused by the endothermic nature of the reaction and the relatively slow rates of heat transfer to particles and vapour removal from the bed. In many quarries and construction sites visited by the authors over the last 50 years, the latter have observed muck piles from blasting with explosives, which included numerous large blocks, in some cases of dimensions larger than the input to the crusher. The names of these sites cannot be given in the article because the owners insist that data obtained on such visits be kept confidential. Often the blasters felt that the natural fissures in the rock would compensate for the use of a low powder factor, and they asked the authors to explain why such blocks were present. A detailed analysis of the situation often indicated that the cause of the blocks is that explained by figures such as 6 and 7 below in the article.

The health and financial costs of cumulative injuries are plaguing the mining industry. Industry leaders are concentrating on reducing the risk of injury to their workers through design and redesign of work environments. While ergonomics is not a currently regulated field, many mines are realizing that the only way to tackle their most costly injuries, cumulative injuries, is to make the proactive choice to understand those injuries, their root causes and to make workplace changes to prevent them from occurring. Reduction of these injuries not only improves the health and morale of the workers but increases productivity and profit for the companies. Knowledge and reporting of ergonomic risk factors by employees and ergonomics committees is key to these changes and to the reduction of cumulative injuries. NIOSH is developing strong relationships with industry associations and equipment manufacturers to leverage their communication abilities to transfer knowledge to their customers and make a difference in the health and safety of U.S. miners. The benefits of a formalized approach to reducing these injuries along with examples will be presented.

As a result of the applications studied, users can monitor variables in real time, optimizing the use of resources, quickly detecting possible flaws in the process and reducing the risks in the operation. Specific recommendations for the design of local content policies to mitigate social, economic and governance risks are developed. The document then offers some recommendations regarding the role of partners in design, implementation, monitoring, and enforcement of local content policies.

Economics, Resources, Environment and Technology are the major driving forces in the base metals industry. However, these factors are intertwined and together will propel the industry in the future. The demand for metals has grown with economic expansion, between 2 to 4 % p.a. The current growth cycle has been driven by economic expansion in China where the demand for base metals has risen from - 7 % of the world demand in the 90's to - 25 % of world demand today, and rising. Base metals are commodities and their demand and price are cyclical. Historically metal prices have declined in constant dollars, forcing the industry to reduce costs, increase productivity and increase the scale of operation for economies of scale. Due to resource depletion and capacity expansion the industry is driven to expand its reserve and resource base. However, in the case of sulphide deposits of copper and nickel it appears to be a losing battle. For nickel the laterites represent a vast source at this time. Their development requires development of new technologies to make these resources economic. Emission reduction is being increasingly mandated in most jurisdictions with all governments enacting progressively more stringent regulations. The industry has been responding with technological innovation. With the Kyoto protocol there is a push to reduce energy intensity in metal production. Technological innovation is driven by all the other factors and is leading to novel ways of doing exploration, mining and processing, that would maximize resource delineation and utilization, reduce costs, increase productivity, reduce energy consumption, maximize asset utilization and reduce environmental affects. Development of alternative technologies such as Pressure Acid Leach of laterite for nickel, bio-leaching, heap leaching, SX-EW etc are being adopted to achieve the aims of the industry.

In the marbel industry, ore reserves refer to the produced tonnage of orthogonal prismatic, defect-free blocks of commercial sizes and of marketable aesthetical quality. On the contrary, in the mining sector, ore reserves refer to the tonnage of ore with grade above some cut-off value. While in the mining sector ore reserves are reported according to existing standard guidelines, the marble industry has no standardmethod. The purpose of this paper is to present a method to estimate white marble reserves using drill coring or borehole wall logging and limited joint mapping on exposed marble surfaces. Data pertaining to fracture orientation, fracture frequency, size, and whiteness were collected. The primary phase of marble characterization is followed by the discretization of the orebody into a three-dimensional array of orthogonal prismatic blocks, where the marble whiteness and fracture intensity are attribute values. Both these variables are considered to obey continuous and not discrete probability distributions. The discretization is performed using computer aided design and the Block Kriging techniques. An outline to improve the description of a given marble ore deposit at the exploration stage is presented for the prediction of marble block size distribution from joint count measurements along diamond drill cores. An example case of a white dolomitic marble quarry is used to demonstrate these methods.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale explosion experiments, to evaluate the strength characteristics of various seal designs, used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests conducted within the multiple entry section of PRLÆs Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) is currently the only accepted test method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), for deeming a seal design suitable for use in American mines. These explosion tests are labour intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. The PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within PRLÆs Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from these chamber tests compare favourably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the chamber test approach also allows for the determination of the sealÆs ultimate design strength. Size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of seal designs as a function of entry size are also presented.

Defining the Risks The bad news is peak commodities, energy and economic crisis and stock markets collapsing are the issues that are already hitting everyone?s bottom line and draining the treasuries of every mining company around the world. Higher energy costs are affecting the bottom line more than ever before, which is creating more risk for companies. Mining companies have major land positions around the world and they have major energy needs. Uncontrollable increases in energy costs, increased regulations for diesel fuel emissions and energy intermittencies are costing mining companies more time, money, and man-power, which are cutting into profits and hitting the balance sheet. The good news is, there are practical energy solutions which are off the grid, tried and true methods which can be implemented in a cost-effective manner and will increase profitability and save shareholder values as well as energy security for these companies and their projects. To date, most of the mining resource industry has not yet considered or used other forms of power like clean, sustainable, or alternative energy for their own energy needs. The reasons have primarily been pushback from the mining industry due to beliefs of older technologies in alternative energy, a lack of understanding of the cost advantages long term, and perceptions of environmental relativity.

Prof. Torstein Utigard's untimely death, in the spring of 2012, put an abrupt end to a meritorious career in the field of high temperature chemical process metallurgy. As an academic in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Toronto, Torstein made solid contributions to the advancement of knowledge pertaining to production and refining of both nonferrous and light metals, and to the development of inquisitive and innovative young people in extractive metallurgy. In this profile, the authors highlight aspects of Torstein's rich personality and of his contributions to his field of expertise.

This progress report summarizes operating results on the gasification of natural lignite from five runs of the commercial-scale pilot plant at Grand Forks, N. Dak., during December 1946 and calendar years 1947 and 1948, when the plant was operated for 1,996 hours. A primary specific objective was to determine the useful life of the outer metal retort tube as it is influenced by corrosion and other factors under a wide range of operating conditions. A secondary objective was to develop the technology of production when generating gas with a high ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide in both the divided and continuous annuli. Results are summarized in graphs and tables that show hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratios from 2.3 to 9 at gas-production rates from 6 to 12 M cu. St. per hr. (thousand cubic feet per hour), or approximately 30 to 60 cu, ft. per square foot of heated retort-wall surface per hour. Gas yields ranged from 36 to 54 M cu, ft. per ton of natural lignite or 63 to 91 M cu. ft. per ton of moisture- and ash-free lignite, Production rates were higher in the divided annulus, but these represent the maximum capacity of the plant only at high hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratios when the high concentration of excess steam and low furnace temperature limit gas production. A ratio of 6 was the highest produced in the continuous annulus because mechanical Limitations of the auxiliary equipment prevented attainment of higher ratios. The lignite feed rate appears to influence the production rate more than any other individual operating variable. Heat balances for four periods when gas with ratios from 2.3 to 7.2 was produced with a lignite feed rate of about 325 pounds per hour suggest that the potential heat in the gas is lower at higher ratios, owing to increased heat losses in the excess steam. Heat-transfer rates through the retort tube in these four tests were between 1,500 and 3,000 B.t.u. per square foot per hour. These rates are much lower than those reached in many earlier tests, but no attempt was made to achieve maximum rates of heat transfer.
