Powered haulage and haul truck-related fatal accidents are among the most frequent at surface mines. Industry organizations developed guidance on accident scenarios to address haul truck and mobile equipment collision-related accidents. However, there is a need to investigate accident data to prioritize these scenarios and identify factors relevant to developing validation methods for collision warning/avoidance technologies and determining their capabilities and limitations. Standards and effective validation methods are necessary for improving system efficacy within mining operations and promoting industry adoption. To address these needs, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated available powered-haulage and machinery-related fatal accident reports documented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Their objective was to gain a perspective for informing the development of test protocols and validation methods through determining the most prevalent accident scenarios and related factors. Our findings afford insight for addressing the most prevalent haul truck scenarios and relevant factors within U.S. surface mining environments.

SOME YEARS AGO I was associated with a mining operation which, because of its isolated location, burned wood for heating purposes. Year after year the tractors and tucks hauled the cordwood in from the edge of the ever-growing clearing. Each year the cartage costs became greater. The degree to which transportation distances affect the economics of fuels obviously varies with many factors, but the main criterion is the amount of heat a unit weight of the fuel will produce. For in-stance, wood is limited in most cases to a haulage distance of a few miles. Coal can be shipped hundreds of miles, whereas petroleum and gas ?can be transported thousands of miles. The world is now on the brink of having a new fuel -uranium. It has the virtue of being so concentrated that transportation costs can, for all practical purposes, be disregarded.

The primary objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazard of elastomeric noise abatement materials with a limited effort expended on the evaluation of specific treatments applied to mine timbers. Under the conditions employed, for a dimethyl silicone rubber, formaldehyde presented the major toxic threat; acrolein was the main toxic species for both polyester and polyether urethanes and an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin; in the case of flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubber compositions, hydrogen chloride, and in the case of PFA-treated timber, furfural, were the major toxic compounds. Of the materials studied, the flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubbers presented the greatest toxic hazard. The generated data have been reduced to toxic load tabulations amenable to employment for potential hazard assessment.

Alberta Plains coals exhibit an almost rectilinear system of vertical fracturing called "cleat", which is best traced by mapping true bearings of underground coal mine rooms. The cleat pattern is approximately conformable with a pattern of surficial features and a pattern of bedrock jointing in the Alberta Plains, and with the trend of the Rocky Mountain Trench, but not with the distribution pattern of coal rank nor with the trend of the eastern boundary of the Rocky Mountains and Foothills physiographic province. The processes resulting in cleat remain in doubt, but cleat is always of practical importance in extracting coal from deeply buried deposits.

It has become increasingly evident that sustainable metals production in the 21" century requires producers to balance the needs of cost effective, high value production with that of responsible plant operation. This is becoming more difficult as lower grade and more complex feed materials, including recycled scrap and residues, arc being processed to reduce production costs and decrease exposure to primary metal market fluctuations. One particular facet of the metals industry facing these challenges in the 21 st century arc copper producers. The recent steady decline in the copper price has seen the industry cut expenditure, tighten control on income streams and focus on high returns on capital investment. For these reasons copper producers arc looking towards flexible technologies that can deliver high value products, with minimal environmental impact at low capital and low sustainable operating costs. Ausmelt's Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) technology for copper production is a low cost, proven technology for the processing of both primary and secondary copper materials. Both the smelting and converting operations introduce significant advantages in environmental performance, improved process efficiencies and high rates of metal recovery. Ausmelt has made significant gains in the past 4 years in establishing a strong market position for its copper technology. New installations in China, South Africa and India as well as existing operations in Zimbabwe and China have demonstrated its effectiveness. This paper reviews the application of Ausmelt Technology for both smelting and converting of primary and secondary sources. It discusses Ausmelt's design and implementation philosophy, and how this philosophy meshes with the needs of the end user.

The exchange of oxygen between carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide that occurs reversibly on carbon surfaces was studied at temperatures of 750° to 850°C and a pressure of 1 atmosphere. Carbon-14 was used to detect and measure the exchange reaction. The extent of oxygen exchange was a linear function of com- position of the gas mixture, and this relationship was used to evaluate the forward and backward rate constants of the reaction. Equilibrium constants, directly determined for oxygen exchange in this study, agreed well with values in the literature that were derived only by indirect procedures. This result establishes the validity of oxygen exchange in the mechanism of carbon gasification by CO2. Rates of carbon gasification were less than an order of magnitude slower than rates of oxygen exchange. Activation energies for these two processes were 58 and 53 kcal/mole, respectively. The closeness in the activation energies argues against any change in the rate-controlling step over a wide temperature span at atmospheric pressure. The role of CO as a retardant on the CO2-C reaction, and the nature of the carbon-oxygen complex are also discussed in view of the data obtained.

Nickel is used in a wide variety of applications from consumer goods to industrial uses. In many of these uses, nickel contributes to the environmental attributes of the product. The challenge, however, is measuring that contribution, comparing it to the environmental cost of production, and communicating the role of nickel to the customer in a way that is easy to understand. This paper presents the Nickel Institute?s approach to climate change as a global commodity industry association, and discusses where we stand with regard to some of these key questions. It also identifies issues for the nickel industry moving forward ? challenges that are likely to be common to other commodities.

Gnome shaft, situated about 24 miles southeast of Carlsbad, N. Mex., was designed and sunk by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for conducting a peace-time experimental nuclear explosion in the thick salt beds of the Permian Salado formation. Excavation was started July 1, 1960, and completed July 26, 1961. The 10-foot diameter shaft, lined with concrete through the rock section, was sunk 1,216 feet. A drift was driven approximately 1,140 feet on the 1,200-foot level terminating in a shot chamber. On completion of 100 feet of shaft, by means of a truck-mounted crane, facilities were installed for conventional sinking. About 709 feet of rock and 506 feet of salt were encountered in the shaft. Salt beds at this place are reported to be over 1,200 feet thick. The overlying rock section varies greatly in composition and thickness of beds and contains a 28-foot bed of water-bearing dolomite. The aquifer was sealed to facilitate shaft sinking and to prevent water-seepage damage in the salt section of the shaft. Sealing was accomplished by grout injection through holes drilled into the aquifer and by grouting behind the concrete liner.

Brine produced from subsurface formations may be employed successfully instead of fresh water as a flooding, medium in the secondary recovery of oil. The feasibility of this substitution has been proved in the shallow "shoestring" area of eastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, where the supply of fresh water often is limited. In this procedure all brine produced with the oil is returned to the formation and thus is prevented from contaminating streams and fresh-water supplies. This report includes a detailed description of a "flood project" in eastern Kansas studied by the Bureau of Mines. In an attempt to determine whether brine, when handled properly, can be used as effectively as fresh water in flooding oil from partly depleted formations, an analysis was made of all known conditions that influence flooding.

The increased focus on best practice environmental management has led to mining and mineral processing companies developing a variety of procedures to ensure that the environmental impacts of their operations are minimised, and that company managements are fully aware of these impacts and the policies and procedures established to ensure this process. Parallel to this, international standards for the development and implementation of environmental management systems are being promoted as necessary for companies to demonstrate their due diligence. Good environmental management systems should be built upon the systems already established within companies, and should ensure that the process of continual improvement is integral to their operation. An outline of the basic components of environmental management systems is provided, along with examples of the way various mining companies have implemented such systems. The benefits of best practice environmental management to mining companies are also considered.

INTRODUCTION THE deleterious effect of stress raisers or notches on the resistance to fatigue of machine components, and other parts subjected to repeated dynamic loading, has been well known for many years. Most engineers in the mechanical field have, at one time or another, encountered a shaft which fractured due to a poor transition fillet, a holding-down bolt which failed due to insufficient tightening or inferior thread form, or a fitted member which broke through a combination of fretting corrosion and clamping stresses. All of these are examples of the damaging influence exerted by stress raisers in fatigue. Other common forms of stress raiser which have taken their toll of dynamic components are: keyways, oil holes, splines, quenching oil grinding cracks, tool marks, and sharp changes in section; some are the result of the design, others of poor execution of the design. It is our experience in the Mines Branch1 and I feel sure this will be corroborated by other fatigue investigators, that the majority of failures are due to incorrect design or faulty preparation of the part concerned, rather than to the use of inferior material. Quite frequently, it is true that the operating conditions necessitate the presence of a 'notch', but even in such cases methods are generally available by which its adverse effect on the life of the component can be reduced or annulled. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a few typical stress raisers, and to provide information on various processes for mitigating their effects in fatigue.

During the World War, potash shipments to the United States ceased, and recourse was had to domestic supplies. High war-tine prisms stimulated interest in various sources, and domestic production increased rapidly. At the close of the war, resumption of shipments from Germany mad other sources reduced prices to below pre-war levels, and, as a result, most of the domestic procedures ceased operations. "During the last decades the refractory life time of the different aggregates of the secondary aluminium production was improved significantly. However, each repair and installation of refractory material affects the operating schedule and can cause costs in the million range. The downtime of just one melting furnace generate costs of 100.000 to 400.000 $ per day. Besides cooling down of the furnace and its repair, the heating-up procedure accounts for the longest time of the shutdown. Usually, heating-up of low cement or ultra low cement castables takes 120 to 150 hours. In order to reduce such expensive downtimes Refratechnik developed a unique and novel product series: Nanobond. These materials can be heated-up in only a third of the usual time. This paper talks about the theoretical aspects, as well as the mechanical and physical properties and especially practical experience of using Nanobond.Theoretical Aspects and Laboratory ResultsCement containing castables such as RCC, MCC, LCC or ULCC are considered standard in many refractory applications. Over the years a wide range of possible raw materials and practical installation methods were developed. However, all of these cement bonded refractory mixes possess one main important drawback. Such materials are characterized by the hydration of the cement bonding. As a result the physical bonded and the hydraulic water has to be removed in a relatively complicated drying procedure. The hydraulic water specifically demands a very careful and cautious heating up procedure. Most of the dreaded steam explosions can occur at a furnace temperature of approx. 250 oC. [1] To avoid such destructions, the heating-up of a new lined or repaired furnace can be very complex and slow. Depending on the furnace or the casted part a drying time of several days with long curing times are common."

A blast fragmentation model is developed based on the gamma function to describe the run-of-mine fragmentation distribution. The model presented is aimed to benefit from simplicity in application and also to be efficient in description of the fine to coarse part of the blast rock fragments. In fact, the gamma based model (KC-KUM), gives a unit distribution curve, which is made up of two separate equations, covering different fragment sizes in the muck pile. The generated values of the fines to central part of the equation and the central to coarse part of the equation are connected at the 40 per cent grafting point. For validation, eight production blasts, which were specially designed for this purpose, were carried out at an iron ore mine (Jalal-Abad iron ore mine/Iran). Results achieved by KC-KUM and two of the most well-known models. Kuz-Ram and Swebrec, are compared with measured data. Moreover, to assess the models’ efficiency in presenting the best distribution curve, a Logarithmic error method is chosen. Based on the achievements. KC-KUM has the least deviations by the least absolute log error of 0.52, whereas the values obtained for the Swebrec and Kuz-Ram models were 0.79 and 1.34 respectively. Furthermore, the models were applied to predict X80 for 12 production blasts carried out at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine/Iran. These predictions were compared with the results from these trials. The coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) are calculated. Consequently, the highest R2 was obtained for KC-KUM at 0.837 with the least RMSE of 11.31. On the other hand, R2 and RMSE are equal to 0.832 and 20.19 for Swebrec; and 0.813 and 19.75 for Kuz-Ram respectively. The results obtained suggest the superiority of the KC-KUM model over the other two models in assessment and prediction of blast fragmentation in a reliable way.CITATION:Faramarzi, F, Ebrahimi Farsangi, M A and Mansouri, H, 2015. The Bureau of Mines has researched the utilization of mining and pro-cessing wastes as raw materials for the production of glass-ceramic pipe. Characterization of various wastes as to occurrence and chemical composition is reported. A computer program was developed and used to identify waste materials and mixes that would result in glass melts from which glass-ceramics could be produced after cooling and subsequent heat treatments. The production of abrasion-resistant pipe from inexpensive and readily available domestic resources could offer an economical substitute for high-alloy steels containing the critical and strategic materials cobalt and chromium.

Grade control is a process that requires the interaction between many components of the mining operation and successful grade control is only realised through good data, robust systems, and a well-trained, motivated and disciplined workforce.The Mt Magnet Gold Project Pty Ltd (MMGP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ramelius Resources Limited, started mining at Mt Magnet in February 2012 with high expectations for success. Positive cash flow would fund an aggressive exploration and mine development program in the area to increase mine life. Disappointment followed when after start-up the operation had issues achieving budget grade and realising the predicted grade of the mined ore. In January 2013, things started to improve. During the next six months, gold production steadily increased with successive months achieving record production. What had changed?Improvements started following the realisation that controlling grade was not the sole responsibility of the mining geologist and that everyone on-site has a role to play. Mining companies are required by law to improve representation of women on their boards. However, progress in this regard has been slow. Boards of directors play an important role in formulating corporate strategy, risk assessment, and effective governance for sustained financial performance. Although some women have successfully maintained board seats, others have been unable to do so. It is difficult to ascertain whether women are being appointed as tokens to satisfy social pressures, as little is known about the experiences of women board members in mining, which may inform or refute tokenism. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women and 16 men across six listed mining companies. Thematic data analysis revealed evidence of tokenism where recruitment to mining boards is compliance-based and is informally driven by influential directors. Adverse boardroom experiences that further confirmed tokenism were reported by women, such as disregarding their contributions, condescending behaviour, and limited influence in decision-making, while other women sought to validate their competence and oppose social exclusion. This study recommends that a strong Board Chair and nominations committee is critical to ensure sustainable recruitment of competent and suitably qualified women; and further foster a culture of inclusivity and valuing gender-diverse boards.

A group of mining men attending a recent workshop on "Analysis and Control in the Canadian Minerals Industry" issued, among others, the following statement: "Slurry flow measurement is considered to be one of the most inaccurate in the industry. A special program should be launched to encourage development." In response, this paper starts off the program with an investigation of the principles and the conventional practice of slurry flow measurement and identifies weaknesses which cause inaccuracies. Then it follows with descriptions of nonconventional systems in use at various locations and comments on their degree of success. The paper concludes that relatively simple methods, which it describes, can be applied to obtain an accurate slurry flow measurement.
