This report relates to the sulfur industry of seven States--Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas--and is part of a national study of the sulfur industry by the Bureau of Mines. Markets as used in this report are divided into two components for individual analysis-- (1) supplier markets which include regional Frasch and byproduct sulfur producers and (2) consumer markets which include processors and manufacturers requiring sulfur in their operations The term sulfur as used in this report includes brimstone, native sulfur, elemental sulfur, or sulfur equivalents.

Modern mining consistently faces controversy. Public sentiment impacts the permitting and development of mines, so a quality public relations (PR) program for mining companies may improve society’s impression of the mining industry. Developing mines face more permitting challenges than operating mines, which stems from a lack of societal trust given the history of mining and its impact on the environment. Two case studies were selected based on the type of public controversy they face to demonstrate how pervasive permitting issues are in industry. Both Pebble Mine, owned by Northern Dynasty Minerals (NDM), and Black Butte, owned by Sandfire Resources America Inc (SRA), experienced difficulties with their water permitting due to potential risks their mine developments posed to local fish populations. Pebble has, to date, failed in all of their attempts to become permitted due to concern for the water and the fish. Black Butte dealt with the same problems, on a smaller scale, but was able to become permitted. These two mines will be discussed in detail including local history, mine setting, mining history in America, prevalent culture groups, technology development, and intercultural communication competence (ICC). The mining industry needs to evaluate its ICC skills since ICC directly determines the effectiveness of PR. Based on Barna’s Stumbling Blocks for intercultural communication, methods for improving the mining industry’s PR will be suggested in the hope of easing the permitting process for future mines by developing ICC.

Several years ago, North American mining companies began to realize they needed to expand their spheres to remain viable. This strategy has been successful, according to Robert W. Schafer. Today, companies from other continents have also recognized the need for an international view for long-term growth and viability, he said. Schafer is vice president for exploration with Kinross Gold. He was the program chairman and moderator of the keynote session at the 1997 SME annual meeting, held in Denver, CO, Feb. 23-27. The theme of the meeting was "Minerals - Serving the Global Community." A record attendance of more than 6,000 people participated in the meeting, which featured 415 exhibitors occupying 582 booths. The title of the keynote session was "Corporate Perspectives on a Global Minerals Industry." Each of the three keynote speakers discussed a different perspective of a global minerals industry.

Analysis of adverse technical issues has traditionally relied on a snapshot of the state of the operation complemented with both the melt shop’s archived data and eyewitness accounts of adverse events. The GrafTech ArchiTech System is helping EAF shops solve problems faster by combining continuous analysis of information with statistically based alerts of process deviations. After one year of system implementation, a number of cases have been detected and communicated to melt shops worldwide. The objective of this paper is to examine a few of these cases; the early detection, statistical analysis, deviation reporting and the resulting countermeasures implemented.

The 32nd annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser, sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014. Each year, one living Hall of Fame inductee, up to three Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, and recipients of an Industry Partnership Award and a Special Citation are recognized for their respective contributions to the mining industry. Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Corale L. and James A. Brierley, founder and principal of Brierley Consultancy LLC; David Nicholas of Call and Nicholas Inc. and Scott M. Shields of Joy Global. The Brierleys are being recognized for their true scientific partnership with parallel achievements in academia and in business development. Nicholas is being recognized as the co-founder of Call & Nicholas and for his noted expertise in mining geotechnical engineering. Shields is being recognized for his innovative work with GPS integration and for playing a key role in laying the foundation for autonomous mines of the future. Over the last 25 years the thin slab casting and rolling process has been gaining a major market share in the production of hot rolled strip, progressively eroding the areas previously of exclusive domain of conventional mills. This is mainly thanks to the competitiveness of the process over conventional ones, and to the growing ability of this technology to cover the majority of market niches, well beyond the boundaries of the commodity market. After having significantly contributed to the continuous expansion of this production mode and after an extensive campaign of theoretical research and physical testing in reference plants, Danieli has progressively developed over the years a new generation of thin slab casting and rolling layout, marking a new phase in the evolution of this process. The new step-ahead is epitomized by the name QSP-DUE. This configuration belongs to the Quality Strip Production (QSP) family, which is Danieli’s strip-quality-oriented thin slab based plants. The innovative features of the process are embodied in the acronym DUE, which stands for Danieli Universal Endless (Danieli patented technology – US patent n. 8087449, January 3rd, 2012). What makes this new concept different is the ability of “universal” rolling modes thanks to the fact that, now, within one single plant it is possible to perform coil-to-coil, semi-endless and endless rolling modes, making this plant a major technology innovation compared to the previous generation.

IN 1922, the writer communicated to the Institute a paper entitled The Development of the Coal Industry in Canada (1), which summarized the considerations set out in a series of papers (2) concerned with coal-mining in Canada which he had presented in 1920 and 1921. This paper contained a forecast by decades, commencing 1920, of Canadian coal production, importation, consumption, and exports, based on anticipated rate of population increase, and continuation of the gradual increase in the per capita rate of coal consumption in Canada that had taken place every year up to 1920. This report describes a primary or direct, continuously sampling, and automatically averaging gravimetric method for analyzing gaseous mixtures of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide) hydrogen, and (by volume measurement) nitrogen. The gaseous mixture is analyzed by passing it at a controlled and definite rate through a system that permits carbon dioxide and water retained by appropriate absorbents to be determined and the residual-gas volume (essentially nitrogen) to be measured. The accuracy and dependability have been established by comparison with very carefully conducted Orsat analyses. The method was developed for, and has been satisfactorily applied to, the analysis of blast-furnace top gas. It permits relatively attention free operation, using simple and low-cost materials usually found as basic equipment in the analytical laboratory. It provides, over a wide range of time or sampling intervals (from less than 1 to over 24 hours), the average composition, in terms of volume-percent, for those components usually determined in blast-furnace gas, if (as is usual) the flow rate of gas from the blast furnace is essentially constant over a selected analysis interval. Oxygen and methane are not determined; but, since these gases are normally absent or present only in traces, their analysis is seldom required.

"MANGANESE METALMethods of PreparationMethods of preparing the manganese metal that has been used in chemical and metallurgical investigations have passed through a cycle. Most of the investigations made before the turn of the century used Moissan's pyrophoric manganese. 5/ This material was made by electrolysis into a mercury cathode and distillation in vacuo. It was essentially a pure material, and investigations in which it was employed (with proper precautions against oxida¬tion) led to accurate results concerning the intrinsic behavior of metallic manganese.An early investigation of the properties of ""Manganese-by-Mercury"" was made by M. Guntz. 6/ He prepared manganese by electrolysis of a concentrated MnCl2 solution with a mercury cathode. The manganese amalgam was pressed through chamois and distilled in vacuo (2 to 3 cm. of mercury) at 200°0., slowly rising to 250°0. Guntz recognized especially the decreased reactivity of manganese with increased temperature of mercury distillation. The most careful and com¬prehensive study of manganese made by this method is that of Kuh 7/ whose work unfortunately was never published in an accessible journal.Royce and Kahlenberg 8/ studied the electrode potential of manganese made by this method."

When alumina is extracted from bauxite ore, one of the environmental pollutants created is known as red mud (RM). This study clarifies that the RM obtained from the Iran Alumina Company has a significant proportion of iron oxides (24%), alumina (19%), silica (17%), and calcium (21%), as well as trace amounts of other minerals. The elements in the RM can be removed and utilized again to reduce environmental pollution. Acid leaching is one of the best ways to selectively exclude some minerals from the RM. In this research, the RM is exposed to different inorganic acids, including HCl, HNO3, H2SO4, and H3PO4, and their binary mixtures. By comparing the results obtained from XRD, EDX, and SEM, it was discovered that CaSO4 crystals are formed by exposing the RM to sulfuric acid. Besides, phosphoric acid was only able to destroy the surface of RM particles. The XRD analyses of acid-washed residues demonstrated that except for the residue of HCl 5 N, all residues contain hematite, showing that inorganic acids cannot easily extract hematite from the complex phases of red mud. While the dissolution of RM with HCl or HNO3 will remove most of the calcium content of RM texture, increasing its iron oxide percentage, which may subsequently be utilized to make colors and pigments.

Low-carbon shales from 65 deposits and 11 sources of coal-mine waste in western Oregon and Washington were tested in a rotary kiln for their suitability as raw material for expanded aggregate. Shales from 41 sources bloated enough to produce crushed, expanded aggregates, weighing less than 65 pounds per cubic foot in the preliminary tests. The samples were judged on the basis of processing qualities, physical properties, and size and uniformity of the source. Nine low-carbon shale deposits and three coal-mine waste sources were selected for more extensive bloating tests and for examination of the expanded aggregates in concrete shapes. Composite samples from these 12 sources and from 2 commercial operations, when processed for testing in concrete shapes, had bulk densities ranging from 37.S to 72.9 pounds per cubic foot. Damp-cured concrete shapes made with these aggregates had bulk densities ranging from S6 to 119 pounds per cubic foot, and all but three of the lightweight concretes had crushing strengths ranging from 3,270 to 6,810 p.s.i. Properties of the lightweight concretes were compared with those of concrete shapes made with commercial aggregates, and with sand and gravel.

During the modeling of grinding systems, population balance modeling (PBM) which considers a constant breakage rate has been widely used over the past years. However, in some cases, PBM exhibited some limitations, and time-dependent approaches have been developed. Recently, a non-linear framework which considers the traditional linear theory of the PBM as a partial case was introduced, thus allowing the estimation of product particle size distribution in relation to grinding time or the specific energy input to the mill. In the proposed model the simplified form of the fundamental batch grinding equation was transformed into the well-known Rosin–Rammler (RR) distribution. Besides, the adaptability and reliability of the prediction model are among others dependent upon the operating conditions of the mill and the adjustment of the RR distribution to the experimental data. In this study, a series of grinding tests were performed using marble as test material, and the adaptability of the non-linear model was investigated using three loads of single size media, i.e., 40, 25.4, and 12.7 mm. The results indicate that the proposed model enables a more accurate analysis of grinding, compared to PBM, for different operating conditions.

Kennecott recently completed an $880 million modernization and expansion of its smelter and refinery to process all concentrates from the Bingham Canyon mine. This is the first application of Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting. Molten material movement by overhead cranes is eliminated and high levels of oxygen enrichment result in very low process gas volumes and exceptionally control of sulfur oxide emissions. All existing in-plant hygiene, safety, and environmental regulations will be met and the smelter is positioned for anticipated more stringent future regulations. Sulfur capture is 99.9 percent resulting in sulfur dioxide emissions less than the 112 kg/hr Air Permit limit, making the smelter the cleanest in the world.

In a survey conducted by symplexi with underground miners in Australia; 78 per cent of participants believed that ‘safety’ is all about people. If ‘safety’ is about people, then is the mining industry focusing on the wrong thing? It would be fair to say that the mining industry is heavily systems focused. Companies develop a safety management system and use this to show regulators that they comply with legislation – however, that is only half of the picture.

The Climax Mine is a panel caving mine which has had a long history of incidents of severe ground control problems. The nature of the ore deposit, which lends itself to the caving meth- of of production, a1 so makes the mine susceptible to large scale stress concentrations which are referred to as ?weight? problems. These problems have increased with increased production and also with expansion to deeper mine levels. During the past twenty years the mine has had to learn to cope with these problems in order to remain in operation. A number of practical guidelines and useful techniques have emerged from these efforts. The purpose of this paper is to share a few of these ideas. The Mine is located near Leadville, Colorado on the continental divide at an elevation of 3450 meters. The ore body is a large low grade deposit of disseminated molybdenum sulfide. It measures about 1200 to 1600 meters in diameter and it had an original depth of about 660 mters. The Mine has been in operation since 1918 and the massive nature of the ore body together with its blocky, highly fractured condition made it natural for the caving system to have been adopted for production at an early date. Open pit mining was started in 1973. The total plant has a capacity of more than 50 thousand tons per day, and more than 400 million tons of reserves at an average grade of 0.310 percent molybdenum disulfide remain to be produced.

Responsibility for the administration of mineral resources is divided between federal and provincial governments. The paper traces the evolution of mineral policies at both levels of government, from the end of World War II to the present. In the immediate post-World War II years, the emphasis was on supplying the raw material needs of a rapidly growing world economy. Policies favouring growth and development of the Canadian mining industry were instituted during this period. Two decades of uninterrupted expansion (the 1950s and 1960s) ensued. The decade of the 1970s was a turbulent one for Canadian mineral producers. Governments intervened more substantially than ever before. Moreover, the industry suffered from an intense period of competition for resource revenues by the two levels of government. At the same time, far reaching changes were taking place in the structure of world mineral markets. To date in the 1980s, the mineral industry has, perforce, adapted to existing mineral market structures. Mineral policies, too, have shown signs of adapting to the needs of the mineral industry. Whether the resulting mix of policies will permit the revitalization of the Canadian mining sector remains to be seen.

The prominence of her mineral resources makes Canada a most fitting place in which to hold the Second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress, since in all probability the Dominion has more diversified mineral wealth than any other part of the British Empire. This paper is concerned with nickel, an important factor of Canada's mineral production. The richness and quantity of her nickel ores have made Canada the world's most important source of supply of the metal. Its history and diversified uses are, therefore, particularly interesting at this meeting. Early History Probably the first use of nickel by man was in the fashioning of implements, and later swords, from nickel-bearing meteorites, masses of metal that have fallen from time to time at many points on the earth's surface and which consist normally of iron carrying substantial amounts of nickel. Meteorites were perhaps the first metal known to man. The falling star, sought out with fear overborne by curiosity, was found to be a better stone than the earth-given, truly a boon from the gods. Archaeologists tell us there is good evidence that the ancient oriental peoples learned at an early date to make these stones into useful implements. The invincible blades of the great warriors of old, in China, Persia, and in northern Europe, were Heaven-sent, a fable which sounds significant of meteoric iron. Probably some of the ancient swords of Khorassan and of Damascus were of meteoric nickel-bearing iron.

AN unusual engineering achievement in the Gulf Coast last year was the drilling of a wildcat well in the swamps of Louisiana, using direct current. More unusual was the fact that it was necessary to house a diesel engine and generator on a barge in order to supply power. The remoteness of the well made it necessary to transport living quarters and drilling equipment to the location by means of barges, and involved the digging of a canal from a lake to the location, approximated one mile. The drilling equipment used on this well consisted of two generating units, each having one 210-hp. six-cylinder @$-in. bore type VDMA, 600 r.p.m. diesel engine, direct connected to a type CD-169, 125-kw., 250-volt direct current generator, which in turn is direct connected to a type CD-105, 15-kw. 250-volt exciter. One of these motors operates the draw works, one the mud pump, and one a duplicate spare. The generating equipment on the barge was approximately 250 ft. from the derrick, the control wires being brought from the derrick to the generator barge enclosed in a standard fire hose. This is an original idea for confining the con- 11.01 wires in one cable; obtaining minimum space and ample protection. Both control and power lines were suspended on poles. This well was at Lake Grande Ecaille Dome, which was located by seismograph in 1928. Fig. 1 shows the derrick, power barge and living quarters where direct G. E. current was used with rotary drilling equipment.

Mining-induced seismicity is one of the adverse side effects of mining with the use of explosives at great depths. Disturbance of the primary stress state by the development of the network of excavations combined with the continuous generation of dynamic loads by the detonation of explosives in mining faces has a negative impact on the level of safety of crew and machines. To ensure the stability of excavations it is necessary to identify in detail the nature of the seismic hazard by means of continuous seismic measurements. Unfortunately, the technologies used so far are characterized by high costs of installation and further maintenance, which clearly limits the possibility of using a large number of stations in a small area. A breakthrough in this matter may be the technology of microelectromechanical systems, which is several times cheaper than standard solutions used in mining seismology. This technology, with the appropriate configuration of devices, can be successfully used to monitor dynamic phenomena generated by mining activities. As part of this study, the assumptions and configurations of a prototype 42-channel accelerometer network using MEMS technology have been presented. The network was installed in the Lubin underground copper mine in Poland in a seismically active area, where multi-face destress blasting are conducted regularly. As a result, 14 tri-axial accelerometers were installed in the immediate vicinity of the active mining front at a distance of about 1,000–4,000 ft (300–1,200 meters) from the closest faces. Highfrequency recordings are collected based on algorithms that trigger the system when the Peak Particle Acceleration set value is exceeded or on the basis of a manual external triggering device connected to the blasting machine. During the measurement period, several high-energy seismic tremors and several dozen of waveforms generated by blasting were recorded. The obtained results are the basis for assessing the effectiveness of the destressing measures and for the analysis of geomechanical risk based on periodic analysis of the velocity of seismic wave propagation
