Size reduction is very energy intensive and is the single most power-intensive operation in mineral processing plants. Research has shown that only a small part of the energy is utilized efficiently. One of the major thrusts of all equipment manufacturers has been to improve this efficiency. Choosing the right equipment to maximize energy utilization in any comminution application has always been the utmost criteria. Due to the high energy cost and depletion of good grade minerals, it is becoming essential to optimize all the subsystems within a given comminution system for the overall economic success of such ventures. Bradley Pulverizer Company of Allentown, Pennsylvania recognized this and started offering its Feeder Controller in 1988 for automatic feed control. After its first successful operation, Bradley made this as a part of all of their grinding system standard offering. It was also recognized that the Feeder Controller was just a beginning and more automation and controls would be required for an overall, efficient grinding system.

In a 2,000 square mile area of Polk, Hillsborough, Hardee and Manatee Counties in Central Florida is located one of the richest known deposits of the life-giving mineral, phosphorus. Under layers of sand and clay are found millions of tons of phosphate rock, best source of this element which is necessary to all forms of life - plant, animal and human. Phosphorus is an irreplaceable ingredient in all complete plant foods, and more than 90% of Florida's vast production goes to enrich the croplands of the United States and many other areas of a hungry world. In addition to this, it has wide industrial use in the manufacture of many products - detergents, baking powder, carbonated beverages, steel, matches, munitions, glass, insecticides, dyes, water softeners and innumerable others. Not only does phosphorus make life possible for us - it also helps us to live longer and better.

Improper combustion of natural gas is the cause of low efficiency in heating appliances , also the liberation of carbon monoxide , an insidious and deadly gas . Carbon monoxide is produced during the incomplete combustion of any carbonaceous material , and quantities as low as 0.2 per cent may product death in a very short time . For healthy atmospheric conditions in the home , in which the occupants are continuously exposed , carbon monoxide should not be present in amount greater than 0.01 per cent , which value is taken as the safety limit in this report . The tests herein reported give the conditions which produce carbon monoxide when radiant -fire heaters burning natural gas are used . The conclusions drawn are based on tests made on one type of radiant heater only , but the general conclusions should apply to other types of radiant heaters of similar construction . The gas consumption , gas pressure , orifice pressure , size of orifice , and heater adjustments were changed so as to obtain as many different operating conditions as possible . In a general way the tests were carried out under the same conditions that the heater might be operated in the home .

Probably the newest thing in mining safety, or safety for mines, is the apparent dissatisfaction on the part of the mineral industries, as represented by both management and labor, and the general public of the Nation, with the safety record of the mining industry. This is reflected by published comments and papers in the technical press;l-9 in labor periodicals,10,11 in popular journals and periodicals,l2, 13 and in the daily press; also by discussions of the Safety Committees sponsored by the National Safety Council,9, 14-15 the American Mining Congress,l.l6 the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers,2,4 the Mine Inspectors' Institute of Amerthe Coal Mining Institute of America,5 19 the American Standards Association, and others.20.21 Mining safety is a joint problem of management and the individual workman. Safety is not attained and will not be attained solely by laws, decrees, and commands because, if it could be done in this manner, acceptable mining safety would have been achieved long ago by the individual states in our Nation and by the nations abroad. The best safety performance is found at plants where management provides a safe environment for the workers; where supervision is efficient and super- visors, others concerned with promoting safety, and the individual worker know through training, experience, and personal contact the safe and unsafe practices of their field; and where the trained individual worker has become safety-minded by experience, quiet influence, unconscious suggestion, and personal guidance. Despite what may be said to the contrary, progress has been and is being made in mining safety. This is shown in Fig 1 to 4. It is beyond the scope of this paper to give possible reasons for the valleys and peaks in the fatal-injury rates. Some recent factors that appear to be contributing to the improvement in these rates are briefly discussed. Aside from mining equipment, "what's new in mining safety" for some mines has been in effect or was tried by others long ago. A safety pro- gram is a living thing; as such, it must be vitalized and continuously fed with enthusiasm, constructive action, and improvements. Because safety is concerned with human conduct, it is necessary to practice safety at all times; if not, it is soon forgotten, and accidents occur. Mining-safety Records The large employment and production concerned with anthracite contribute much to the mining-safety records of the mineral industry. Approximately 81,000 persons are. employed in this industry having mines concentrated in an area of 480 square miles in northeastern Pennsylvania. Because of the achievement of the anthracite industry in safety during 1948, the other branches of the mineral industry can profit by a study of what has been done to achieve that record. Where one mineral is produced by other large groups having methods of mining that are similar in many respects to the anthracite-mining methods, an achievement in such a large industry is important. Salient factors concerned with safetye in the anthracite industry are: no radical change has occurred in the mining-safety regulations pertaining to anthracite mines. "Clays are present in a large number of mineral deposits and are commonly found as gangue. Its complex chemical structure, characterised by anisotropic surfaces, makes its presence a permanent challenge for flotation operations, increasing the reagent consumption, decreasing the quality of the concentrate, and changing the rheological properties of the system. In this context, the main objective of this research is to improve the floatability of chalcopyrite minerals in the presence of clays by using guar gum, a low molecular weight organic polymer, which acts as a surface coating agent for clays. Clay Minerals Society provided the kaolinite sample and the chalcopyrite sample was purified from mineralized rock specimens obtained from Ward’s Natural Science Establishment. Micro flotation tests were carried out in a 150 cm3 Partridge-Smith cell, using compressed air as the gas phase at a flow rate of 80 cm3/min. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were used as a collector and a frother, respectively. The results showed that the use of guar gum improves the recovery of chalcopyrite in the presence of kaolinite because it induces the formation of clay aggregates that settle by gravitational effects, preventing the 'coating effect' and decreasing excessive collector consumption. pH played a key role in the guar gum performance, which was most effective at highly alkaline conditions (pH 11), where the copper recovery improved from 73% to 90%. The work has significant implications for the mineral flotation in the presence of clay minerals.INTRODUCTION The mining industry is continuously confronted with challenges that alert the sustainability of the sector. There is little availability of water, the grade of the deposits are getting smaller, and the gangue is becoming more complex. Usually, clays are part of the gangue in numerous systems, including copper ore, porphyry, nickel, platinum, etc. (Senior & Thomas, 2005). The structure is mainly composed of layers of tetrahedral silica (T) and octahedral alumina (O) that join in certain proportions: 1: 1 (T-O) and 2: 1 (T-O-T) (Theng, 2012). Also, they expose two crystallographically different surfaces: the faces, which tend to be negatively charged, and the edges, which carry a charge that changes from positive to negative depending on the pH (Van Olphen, 1977). One of the most common clays in copper deposits is kaolinite, whose structure is composed of an octahedral sheet of gibbsite bound to a tetrahedral silica sheet in the ratio 1:1"

This paper is presented from the viewpoint of the mill operator and maintenance supervisor. Its purpose is to highlight the things that have been accomplished by the mill designers to lighten the load for the maintenance superintendent and to reduce the overall costs for the plant operator. The complexity of plant design, the civil and structural engineering problems encountered when the satisfactory maintenance layout is accomplished are appreciated, and the writer is fully aware of the complexities of these problems. However, it is not the purpose of this particular paper to dwell upon these problems, nor to emphasize or de-emphasize the problems of the civil, mechanical and electrical engineers. It is simply that the paper will attempt to review what these people have accomplished in spite of the many technical problems. This paper then is prepared with the operator and maintenance people?s viewpoint. What is their definition of design for maintenance? It is the writer's interpretation that the various design concepts which mean improved maintenance are such items as (I) maintenance areas, (2) laydown space for maintenance materials in specific maintenance jobs, (3) the inclusion of bridge cranes in the plant and specific design of the craneways to accomplish flexibilities for the cranes, and (4) the location of the piece of equipment to allow maintenance people to work around the equipment - - - this specifically includes the orientation of the particular piece of equipment.

"Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd. (controlled by Noranda Mines Limited) operates two lead-zinccopper- silver mines approximately 20 miles inland from Bathurst, N.B. The principal No. 12 orebody is mined by underground methods; the second, the No. 6 orebody (6 miles away), is recovered by open-pit mining. No. 12 underground operations ar•e in two parallel massive sulphide orebodies about 400 ft apart, dipping at 75 to 80 degrees and plunging almost vertically. The initial mining phase involved longhole open stoping from the 1550 level to the crown pillar, with main levels at 150-ft intervals and sub-levels between at 75 ft. Stope dimensions average 120 ft long, 100 ft wide and 400 ft high, with alternate rib pillars as well as sill and crown pillars. Initially, ore was transferred through scram drifts below each stope by means of 125-hp electric slushers and 72-in. folding scrapers, being delivered to gravity ore-pass collection •systems feeding a primary jaw crusher below. Later, track and trackless drawpoints were utilized below most longhole open stopes and pillars. Rib pillars were recovered by longhole methods, with large blasts into a central slot and undercut, after adjacent stopes had been filled. Waste-rock stripping from No. 6 open pit has been supplied to No. 12 stopes as backfill, by means of gravityfill raises.In 1968, the decision was made to mine the remaining ore zones by mechanized cut-and-fill methods, utilizing Load-Haul-Dump equipment. Currently, approximately 60 per cent of No. 12 mine production comes from mechanized cut-and-fill mining. As before, backfill is supplied from No. 6 open pit stripping waste rock, which has been crushed to minus 6 in. The ultimate objective is to supply virtually all production requirements by mechanized cut-and-fill techniques. The No. 6 open pit, which commenced production in 1966, covers an area of 1,500 by 1,200 ft, equivalent to 41 acres approximately. Ramp roads are graded at 8.5 per cent. Each mining bench is 36 ft high and the ultimate pit will consist of 14 benches for a final pit depth of 504 ft. Present depth is 180 ft."

Manganese silver ores are well known to be refractory towards cyanidation. Various processes have been suggested for improving the amenability of these ores. A sulfurous acid pre-leach is one such process. This paper traces the development and implementation of the sulfurous acid pre-leach process for the retreatment of manganese silver tailings at Tonopah, Nevada. An account of the test work program is presented, followed by a description of the operating plant and specimen metallurgical performance. The paper also summarizes the history of the Tonopah tailings, their mineralogy and makes reference to previous application of the sulfurous acid pre-leach process.

Safety bulletins and stickers issued for the paste backfill plant at Cannington read as follows: æCannington Paste Fill Plant, First of ItÆs Kind in AustraliaÆ. We could even dare to state that the Cannington plant is different than any other paste backfill plant in the world because of the overall design, plant equipment and underground delivery. However, one thing to be certain of is, the paste backfill plant works as designed and a pump is not required to deliver paste underground given the general plant arrangement at Cannington. The past two years have been a process of evolution to design and construct the plant and make it work. This paper will describe the paste process using full mill tails along with placement of cemented paste underground. Discussions will include rationale of fixed plant selection along with various control requirements. BHP World Minerals recently commissioned its paste backfill plant in December 1997. Cannington is placing full mill tails underground via two surface boreholes that deliver either to primary or secondary stopes.

The True Pipe® in-line sampler was developed in an attempt to address the need for a mechanically reliable and correctly designed sampler to suit one-dimensional pressurised slurry pipelines, often found in metallurgical process plants but for which no reliable and representative sampling solution as yet exists.The design, whose operation is based on the principle of symmetry, is described by Dominique François-Bongarçon (2005) with the synchronous opening and closing of relevant valves. It representatively isolates portions of the particulate material stream at predetermined intervals for effective extraction of primary increments for subsequent sample compositing.Theory of Sampling applicable solutions have proven elusive in flowing pressurised particulate material streams, with various attempts to date not having formulated a viable, mechanically reliable and acceptable design.Compliance to sampling theory is critical, and a number of tests were conducted where certain operating parameters were altered to determine their influence and sensitivity on sampling representativeness.The results of the initial series of tests performed on a carefully designed rig are presented, with additional work discussed for necessary investigation in the near future.Getting closer to a robust, economic and correct design for this challenging application in the minerals industry may now not be that far away. Plant management staff will see improved metallurgical mineral balances around their process plants and significantly reduced sampling discrepancies, particularly in tailings applications. Rail cars are referred to as "yellow-balled" when they are sufficiently old or damaged to preclude their efficient operation on long-haul or main line routes. For most coal carrying railroads, their alternative value is salvage. This, however, does not necessarily preclude their effective use, on a limited basis, by small mines located near existing trackage. Because of age, the sizes of these hopper and gondola cars ace currently 50 and 70 tons rather than the 100 tons commonly built at the present time. As a gathering system, yellow-ball rail could provide an alternative, particularly in Kentucky, western Pennsylvania and west Virginia, to coal trucks, conveyor belts and pneumatic pipelines [4, p.17], belts and pneumatic pipelines. Rail service of this type provides a limited alternative to track abondonment, a possible financial return to a railbank [3], a direct contribution to service demand on main lines, and a means by which many small eastern coal mines could retain or regain competitive viability [4]. In terms of energy efficiency, compared to trucking coal, the total direct energy impact (fuel) of yellow-ball rail can be expected to range from 280-990 Btu/ton-mile while that for trucks ranges from 1850-3120 Btu/ton-mile [2].

Outotec has developed an operator training simulator (OTS) platformsuitable for various hydrometallurgical processes. The complete solution is run in the cloud, where virtual client instances can be managed on-demand. The aim is to build a generalizable model that produces coherent results even when operating outside of ideal parameters, allowing the operator to train in unsteady state conditions such as start-up and shutdown. Complex software products are commonly associated with significant development time and cost. Utilizing modular software architecture, only the control system and processmodel are tailored for theOTS,whereas modules such as user administration and cloud-based client machine spawning can be imported, shortening development time. A generic acidic pressure oxidation process (POX) operator training simulation consisting of feed preparation, autoclave, dual-stage flash evaporation and off-gas scrubbing is described. Process is simulated using Outotec HSC Sim 9 process simulator and controlled by Siemens Simatic PCS7 control system.

ABSTRACT Nickel compounds vary significantly in their toxicological properties, so it is critical that continuing studies to accurately quantify worker exposures consider the processing that accompanies refining nickel-containing materials. The Clydach nickel refinery, which has operated for more than 100 years, was the first nickel-producing facility to show a high risk for lung and nasal-sinus cancers among workers employed since it opened in 1902. Process chemistry and equipment have changed dramatically over Clydach’s history. This paper describes the processing evolution at Clydach with a focus on the propensity for aerosol formation and the forms of nickel in airborne dusts.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides useful information about the composition of an ore sample in terms of quantification of crystalline phases and amorphous content. The use of new, fast detection systems implemented in CubiX FAST industrial diffractometers creates the opportunity to use this technique in exploration and modern process control. Besides the chemical composition of iron ores, their phase composition is also an important factor for exploration, quality control and processing. In the analysis of iron ore, XRD can identify the phases containing iron, such as haematite Fe2O3, magnetite Fe3O4, and goethite FeO(OH), and any other mineral phases present, especially silicas. Quantitative analysis is possible by various classical methods such as straight line or polynomial calibration with standards, but modern quantification analysis techniques such as Rietveld analysis or full pattern autoscale analysis are attractive alternatives, as they do not require any standards. These methods offer impressive accuracy and speed of analysis. Another analysis technique offering great benefit to ore exploration and process control is cluster analysis. This technique greatly simplifies the analysis of a large amount of data, eg from drill core samplings, and automatically sorts closely related scans of an experiment into separate clusters and marks the most representative scan of each cluster as well as outlying patterns. This can facilitate multi-dimensional compositional mapping of ore deposits, identifying regions of favourable mineral composition and allows fast and reliable tracking of the process. It is the most economic procedure to have automatic data evaluation without involving any dedicated personnel in the process. Details of the techniques used, sample optimisation methodologies, results, data precision and limitations will be discussed. The approaches have enormous potential as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ore materials in an industrial environment.

"The performance of column flotation is strongly influenced by the effectiveness of the gas sparging system. Unfortunately, field studies suggest that gas injector systems used for column sparging are not always optimized. This unfavorable condition can create a number of issues within the concentrator including lower recoveries, poorer metallurgical upgrading, decreased capacities, increased circulating loads, higher reagent consumption and inefficient energy usage. To help overcome these problems, techniques have been developed that can be adopted by plant operators to improve sparger performance. These techniques include (i) design modifications to sparger components such as nozzles, distributors and internal parts and (ii) operational improvements such as proper balancing of gas/water flows, elimination of unnecessary pressure drops, and staged injection of frothing agents. This article reviews the important criteria that govern sparger operation and provides data showing how simple low-cost improvements can positively impact column performance. INTRODUCTION Column flotation cells have become the most popular machine design for industrial applications that require high purity concentrates. The superior metallurgical performance of column cells can be largely attributed to their unique geometry, which readily accommodates the use of froth washing systems. The wash water minimizes the nonselective entrainment of ultrafine gangue minerals that would otherwise be hydraulically carried in the water reporting to the froth concentrate. The larger height-to-diameter ratio of columns allows a deep froth to be maintained, which is essential to achieve even water distribution. Due to these unique features, column cells can provide impressive levels of metallurgical performance closely approaching the ultimate separation curve predicted using the flotation release analysis method (Kohmuench et al., 2007). Another very important feature of column cells is the design of the gas sparging system. One popular choice in the minerals processing industry is the Eriez SlamJet® sparger. As shown in Figure 1, this type of sparger operates by passing compressed gas through a small discharge nozzle. Fluid turbulence created by the exiting gas disperses and distributes small bubbles into the flotation pulp. The sparger is equipped with an internal moveable rod that is attached to a pressure diaphragm in the back housing of the sparger. The internal rod automatically moves back/forward and opens/closes the nozzle outlet when the compressed gas is switched on/off. This patented design effectively eliminates the accidental backflow of flotation pulp into the injection tube during shutdowns. The sparger can be operated as a gas-only injector or with the introduction of a small amount of high-pressure sparger water (Kohmuench et al., 2010)."

"'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016. "Ores enriched in critical rare earth elements (CREE) keep on being of particular interest. The CREE are Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, including Y. In conjunction with beneficiation tests on Y-mineral bearing flotation tailings of complicated mineralogy, the Mineral Liberation Analyses (MLA) was used to work out processing characteristics fraction-wise in terms of modal mineralogy, mineral recovery, locking and liberation, and particle size.Size fractions from mechanical sieving (“real fractions”) as well as fractions created virtually by using filters on the MLA-data of the unsieved head material (“virtual fractions”) were investigated comparatively thereby. The ""virtual-sizing-approach"" features a much simpler sample preparation procedure and considerably lower cost if a fraction-wise investigation of a head sample is needed. It can be conveniently applied to intimately locked ores needing a fine grinding to a particle size distribution (PSD) range below 25 microns for instance. However, its practical use is sometimes disputed in terms of the reliability of the results. Results are shown for the main Y-bearing mineral xenotime and selected main gangue minerals of a low grade REE-ore.The influence of sample representativeness, sample preparation and particle counting statistics turned out to be of crucial importance. Given that all preconditions for reliable results are met, locking characteristics, modal mineralogy, and even PSD trends can be read from virtual fractions.The authors encourage processing engineers to use the virtual approach. They propose practical measures to improve the reliability of the MLA results, identify and tackle conflicting results, and mitigate evaluation problems that may arise."

Mining is commonly seen as a typical basic industry with rough and even dangerous working conditions, heavy environmental load, and a low level of high-technology and automation with much manual work and operations. A mining operation (open pit or underground) is a very complex one consisting of many manual, physical, mechanical and logistical operations with different human interfaces and decisions. For this reason it is a demanding and potential area for all applications of automation and information technology: controlling difficult non-linear, time varying multivariable processes and machines; solving of ergonomic safety and environmental problems; automation of logistical systems; applying robotics, mechatronics, and information handling, etc. In addition to that, big economic sums are involved with these operations. On the other hand, automation technology has developed towards intelligent and adaptive systems including some from the above mentioned fields of automation. Connecting them with modern information and communication technologies makes the idea of an intelligent and unmanned mine more and more feasible in the near future. This requires intensive co-operation and co-ordination between the mining industry and manufacturers of mining machinery. This has been successfully accomplished in the five-year Intelligent Mine research and development program as well as the three years of subsequent implementation of its results in Finland. The basic elements of an Intelligent MineTM concept are:mine-wide information and data acquisition system; high-speed two-directional mine-wide communication network for real-time monitoring and control; computerised information management, mine planning, control and maintenance systems; automated and tele-operated machinery and equipment which are connected to the information system; and links to the public information networks. The degree of automation of an intelligent mine depends on many technical and economical factors. The basic precondition for such an approach is that it will improve the total economy of the mine. This paper will describe the Intelligent Mine Technology Program with the results. Also the implementation which took place during starting of a new underground mine (Outokumpu Chrome Oy Kemi Mine) will be described.
