Test work indicated and plant operation has since confirmed that SAG milling is a viable option for INCO's Sudbury Operation milling rationalization project only if pebble crushing is included in the SAG/ball mill circuit. Throughput increases more than fifty percent with pebble crushing incorporated into the comminution process. The finer product of high speed pebble crushing provides further energy savings. The unconventional approach of pumping the pebble crusher product, while simplifying plant layout, has produced challenging wear problems.

"Southern Peru Copper Corporation's Ilo Refinery, the largest in Peru, began operations in 1975 with a production capacity of 165,000 stpy. Southern Peru bought the Refinery from the state owned Minero Peru SA on June 1, 1994.The Refinery processes blister from Southern Peru's I/o Smelter. Blister copper is processed in an anode plant equipped with two 365 st tilting reverberatory furnaces, a 26 mold casting wheel and an anode press machine. Copper is electrorefined in a tank house equipped with 768 commercial cells, 44 stripper cells, and 40 liberator cells, utilizing two electrolyte circuits and a 21,000 Ampere rectifier.During 1989 through 1994 a program for improving productivity was carried out by increasing the number of cells and increasing current density to the total rectifier capacity. As a result, a capacity 215,000 stpy of refined copper, 2 million tr. oz silver and 6,000 tr. oz gold per year was achieved. In 1994 Southern Peru announced plans to increase capacity to 250,000 stpy of cathode with a US$ 18 million investment and a US$ 2 million investment in environmental improvement projects, as part of the purchase agreement with the Peruvian government.This paper outlines the scope of the SPCC lio Refinery modernization and environmental program. It describes the implementation of the Electrolytic Plant expansion based on instaliation of polymer concrete cells, a new rectifier, a new selenium roaster and a Precious Metal Plant upgrades."

This volume- summarizes mining and petroleum legislation in 18 European jurisdictions. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identitication of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis; of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials; and fourth, mention of laws regulating offshore operations. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added in countries where minerals are subject to control of States or Provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating low-chromium alloy substitutes for type 304 stainless steel (type 304 SS). The purpose of the research is to reduce the chromium content in austenitic stainless steels used for corrosion-resistant applications. Nine Fe-9Cr-12Ni alloys containing additions of 0 to 5 pct Mo, 0 to 2 pct V, and 0 to 2 pct Cu were selected for evaluation. All of the experimental alloys containing 5 pct Mo and an alloy containing 2Mo-2V-2Cu possessed structure and tensile strengths similar to those of type 304 SSe Alloys containing SMo-2V and SMo-2V-2Cu had ac-ceptable welding properties as measured by the Varestraint test. Alloys containing at least 2 pct Mo had cQrrosion resistance comparable to that of type 304 SS in solutions of nitric acid, phosphoric acid, acetic acid, and citric acid. In chlorides, all the experimental alloys were susceptible to localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking similar to that of type 304 SSe The corrosion properties were established by weight-loss tests, electrochemical polarization tests, and stress-corrosion cracking tests. An Fe-9Cr-12Ni-SMo-2V alloy and an Fe-9Cr-12Ni-SMo-2V-2Cu alloy had a combination of welding properties, tensile properties, and corrosion resistances that were most comparable to those of 304 SS.

Oxidation of coal can best be described as a process of deterioration, since most of the uses of coal, such as for fuel and by-product chemical and coke production, are adversely affected by coal oxidation, and the inclusion of oxidized coal in most coal products detracts from their value. There are probably many mechanisms of coal oxidation, and the ways oxygen molecules combine as complexes with coal macromolecules to form new substances have been dealt with and speculated upon by many workers1)* but are not dealt with in the present work. This study deals with tests and methods of detecting oxidized coal, with particular emphasis on the microscopically discernible changes that accompany the chemical and physical changes that affect the technological properties of coal during oxidation.

"Smelting furnace bricks contain significant quantity of base metals trapped in refractory material. A series of flotation tests were carried out on samples of old bricks from Sudbury area to examine upgrading behaviour for recycling purposes. Depending on the grind size used nickel recoveries varied from 60 to 90.6% with corresponding grades of 20% and 14.7%Ni. There is a trade-off between nickel and copper. The nickel has responded well to fine grinding, however, the copper recovery suffered from it. Mineralogical characteristics and flotation behaviour of the brick material are discussed in reference to those from the primary ore. INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is well recognized as a mature technology not only for the mining industry, but also for the environmental industry for the purpose of remediation and recycling. Materials available for recycling are usually the products of many years ago. There are multiple stake holders in this area. In general, when the processing results in a product that can be reused or sold, the company carrying out the remediation makes a profit, while the regulators and the public are pleased due to a cleaner environment. From these points of view, there have been many papers published over the years on various mineral processing techniques applied to separation of many different materials including from mining and metallurgical industries (Wilson et al., 1994; Tsunekawa et al., 2005; Saikia et al., 2012).Flotation may be viewed as the backbone of the mining and metallurgical industry since its invention for separation of solids from one another almost a century ago. It is capable of recovering a variety of finely divided different solids following their liberation from each other. Its versatility and highly competitive nature in terms of cost per tonne of material processed, accounts for its occasional uses in the environment engineering area. In the mining industry, flotation is the standard method used for the sulphide ores. It can be applied as a bulk flotation and/or differential flotation. Bulk flotation, which refers to co-flotation of several components from their source, is most suitable for environmental cleanup objectives. Desulphurisation of various plant tailings is a typical example of this (Benzazzoua et al., 2000)."

Introduction Drinnan is situated in the Prairie Creek coal area in the Foothills belt of Alberta. It lies on the main line of the Canadian National railway from Edmonton to Jasper. The exact location is shown on the map (Figure I). Interest in the field was aroused by several circumstances: Its proximity to Brule and Pocahontas on the southwest and to Coal-spur on the southeast led to the belief that coal might be economically produced here. There was already at Hinton a 3 ft. 9 in. coal seam being mined by Seabolt. The coal was of very good grade, being black and shiny in appearance with well defined cleavage and a heat value of 12,000 B. t.u. Outcrops of coal had also been noticed on the north side of the Athabaska river and Fish creek. These facts led the Jasper Coal Company to investigate the field. This Company considered taking over the Seabolt property at Hinton, but, owing to the size of the seam, this plan was abandoned and prospecting by diamond drills and test pits was started two years ago in the district east of Hinton. After prospecting had been completed, the most favourable district was found to be in township 51, ranges 24 and 25, west of the 5th meridian. The Company's lease includes all or parts of sections 18, 19, 20, and 28 in range 24, and sections 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 in range 25. The approximate boundaries of the property are the Canadian National railway on the north, Happy creek on the west, and Cache Percotte creek on the east. The lease comprises 3,100 acres, and the total amount of coal in sight is estimated at 100,000,000 tons.

This contribution provides an assessment of research and development efforts to optimize SOx, NOx and mercury capture in flue gas. Coa, characteristics and combustion conditions in a power plant have an impact on the types and concentration of flue gas pollutants. These factors can also affect the amount of pollutant removed. This contribution would also provide a comparative study of the technologies that holistically aim remova, of SOx, NOx and mercury altogether in coal-fired power plants. A portion of this contribution provides background information on regulatory drivers.

New is a relative term, and, when used with reference to a concept as old as shaft kilns can be applied to a number of designs. In this case the design that is the subject of this paper, is known as the ring or annular shaft kiln as developed by Mr. Karl Beckenbach of West Germany. The first&apos; operating unit was rated 185 tons per day and was installed in 1962. Today, there are approximately 84 units in operation in Western Europe and Japan. Twenty-one additional units are in the process of erection or on order. Developed sizes range from approximately 100 to 330 tons per day. Units of over 500 tons are in the design stage, however, the largest units presently operating are rated 330 tons per day, <the first: of this size having been installed in 1966. "Figure" 1 is an elevation view of the unit. It is a single vertical cylinder to which are attached the required service platforms, combustion chambers, injectors and distribution piping. Auxiliaries such as recuperator, exhaust fan and dust collector are mounted on the appropriate service platform. The charging pan, feed conveyor, etc. are mounted at the kiln top. At the bottom of the kiln is the silo with a vibrator type discharger, and mounted separately is the required blower for injector air and fan for internal cooling.

An upsurge in demand for Australian coal has seen a much needed programme for a new generation of coal ports. This paper discusses design concepts in planning a large modern terminal, with the 25 Nt/a Port Kembla and the 50 Mt/a Newcastle facilities as practical examples. The need is emphasised for a studied Master Plan, in-built materials handling flexibility and staged development. Trends in bulk ship design and loading methods are noted. Features of these Australian designs include methods of dealing with poor ground conditions, functional civil engineering for environmental protection and optimal marine structure designs.

INTRODUCTION Approximately two years have elapsed since the first summary of the Grizzly Gulch Tailings Disposal Project was presented (1). Since that time, various physical modifications and additions to the existing treatment system have transpired. Further, Homestake and the entire mining industry have been impacted severely by additional modifications and additions concerning regulatory reform aimed at total disciplinary permitting and hazardous waste management. The following paper summarizes the past accomplishments relating to the Grizzly Gulch Tailings Disposal Project, correlating these accomplishments with future plans that are being developed to comply with regulations and to continue Homestake&apos;s commitment to environmental protection. The famous Homestake Gold Mine, located in Lead, South Dakota, has been operating in the Black Hills region for over a century, approximately 12 years before the south half of Dakota Territory was admitted to the Union as the State of South Dakota (2). During the 104 years of operational development, Homestake&apos;s Gold Mine, as well as the entire mining industry, have been influenced by numerous governmental regulations dating back to the Refuse Act of 1899 which regulated the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. The enactment of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 may be thought of as the beginning of a long line of unplanned steps to deal with the many concerns of matters pertaining to the environment. Environmental awareness continued into the 1970’s, in which the Clean Air Act, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), to name a few, surfaced.

(New York Meeting, February, 1313.) I. INTRODUCTION. IN the metallurgical treatment of most metallic sulphides it is usually necessary to carry on a roasting-operation. In some cases the raw ore will have to be roasted.; in others the intermediary product, matte, produced in smelting the ore; again, both ore and matte may have to be subjected to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Most metallic sulphides, when given an oxidizing-roast, pass through the state of sulphate before they are converted into oxides. All metallic sulphates are completely decomposed by heat, with the exception of those of lead and bismuth, but the temperatures at which decompositions take place vary with the metals. Some metallic sulphates are converted directly into oxides, others first form basic salts. Alkali-earth sulphates show a behavior similar to that of metallic sulphates, while alkali sulphates do not part with their sulphur trioxide even at elevated roasting-temperatures. The older data on the decomposition of metallic sulphates by beat are only approximations. Thus Kerl 1 gives the order in which metallic sulphates are decomposed with increasing temperatures as (Ag2, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, CO, Mn, Pb) SO4. More recent statements give definite temperatures and modify the formerly accepted order of decomposition. But the temperatures given by various observers do not agree. The reasons for this are to be found mainly in the method and manner of carrying out experiments. Four methods have been used: 1. The sulfation rates of magnesium oxide and calcium oxide (molar ratio 7:3) contained in calcined CMA ( calcium magnesium acetate) by SO2 were measured. The experiments were carried out in the temperature range 700 to 1100 °C and under the SO2 concentrations of 0.3 to I mol % (5 % 02). In the low-temperature range below 830 °C the reaction produced CaSO4.3MgSO4 and unreacted MgO, but no MgSO4 phase. The formation of CaSO4.3MgSO4 phase has a significant implication in that it allows the utilization of MgO for SO2 removal whereas the sulfation of MgO from conventional sources is so slow that it is of no practical interest. Thus, the calcined CMA can remove SO2 at lower temperatures than conventional SO2 absorbents and at a greater capacity. Above 950 °C only CaO reacts with SO2, but at a much greater rate than the calcined Ca(OH)2, which is one of the most reactive SO2 absorbents.

Machine learning is creating value in all facets of the mining industry, from exploration to production. The authors provide an accessible, high-level introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL); the latter being widely recognised as one of the most powerful forms of ML. In particular, the authors will introduce deep learning models known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), how they are applied, and the economic considerations necessary for determining when DL may be the right solution to de-risking complex block modelling problems. The authors present preliminary results from the mineral resource modelling study of the Jundee orogenic gold deposit, Yandal belt/gold province, Western Australia. The primary goal was to identify the direction and location of the narrow gold veins more accurately and demonstrate how non-linearly correlated elements are used as direct inputs to the resource model to assist with the target element’s grade prediction. This demonstrates that: (1) existing techniques for finding correlations between assayed elements do not adequately reflect the complex geology of the asset, (2) nonlinear correlations that are difficult to model as simple mathematical functions are representative of geological patterns in a deposit, and (3) non-linearly correlated assayed data, fed as inputs, increase the performance of the resource model as reconciled through blind tests. To conclude, the authors hypothesise that the patterns represented by the DL block models may be revealing the results of overprinting geological processes that generated mineral deposits. For example, the primary hydrothermal processes that deposited metals created depositional patterns that become particularly complex as a result of being overprinted, in part or in whole, by secondary physicochemical processes. This may explain why non-linear geochemical relationships have the capacity to generate more accurate block models of mineral deposits.

"The health, comfort, and efficiency of men engaged in the mining industry may be impaired, in some instances very seriously, by abnormal physical conditions of the mine air or by variations in its composition. This is true in some of sheet metal mines of the West where high temperatures with varying humidities are encountered. Physiological studies have been made in some of these mines showing the effects of various temperatures end humidities. As it is difficult to carry out studies on many controlled temperatures, it was thought best to make the experiments in a laboratory and apply the results to the industry insofar as practicableThe effects of moderately high temperatures and humidities are more difficult to measure perhaps than the extreme conditions, but may be predisposing causes of fatigue, discomfort and disease, A cooperative study of the physioloical effects of heat and humidity is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the U. Queensland legislation, industry codes and policies relating to mine rehabilitation and closure create the expectation of successful progressive rehabilitation and that the post-mining environment is being returned to a condition suited to a pre-agreed, beneficial end use. Yet none of the rehabilitated mined land in the Bowen Basin has been certified as successful by authorities suggesting there is a gap between current rehabilitation and the full environmental outcomes that the legislation could deliver. We tested the veracity of this perspective and reflect on where responsibility for any discrepancy lies.We first reviewed current Queensland legislation and industry codes relating to stakeholder engagement, rehabilitation, closure planning and post-mining land use. We tested the accessibility of the documentation trail for several recent coal-mining projects in the Bowen Basin and examined the level of detail in approval documentation. We then assessed the rehabilitation performance reports of these mines in relation to the contents of their approval documents. Legislation, guidelines and codes repeatedly emphasise the need to plan for closure before mine operations begin and to progressively perform rehabilitation with an agreed end-use in mind. Early stakeholder involvement in these processes and transparency of actions and outcomes are also encouraged by government publications. Overall, in terms of transparency, we found that relevant documents are generally available to the persistent enquirer. However, the rehabilitation and closure undertakings given in both mine company and regulator documentation were commonly generic and rehabilitation obligations were not explicitly incorporated into rehabilitation plans. Rehabilitation reporting was also weak in that no distinction is required between successful and unsuccessful revegetation, nor to closure objectives and mine completion criteria. Responsibility for the apparent disconnect between regulatory intent and actual performance appears to begin with the regulator too readily allowing generic information and in not requiring performance reporting to correspond with approved post-mine conditions. As a result, companies may have a much greater rehabilitation and closure risk than mine management expects. The following is a summary of the Robert E. Murray Innovation Lecture on “Sustainable Copper Mining Flowsheets and the MissionZero Mine” presented as part of the keynote session on Feb. 23, 2026 during the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Salt Lake City, UT. As the world accelerates its transition to renewable energy, the appetite for critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, rare earths and graphite has never been greater. Forecasts suggest that global mineral demand will double by 2050, driven by the proliferation of electric vehicles, renewable power infrastructure and digital technologies. This surge presents not only an immense opportunity but also an unprecedented challenge. In a world where every ton of ore processed and every liter of water used is scrutinized, how can mining deliver more with less, while meeting tightening environmental and social expectations? Traditional mining methods, developed for an era of abundant, high-grade ore and looser regulations, are struggling to meet today’s demands. Declining ore grades, volatile markets and the imperative to shrink environmental footprints have rendered traditional mineral processing practices unsustainable. The sector thus finds itself at a decisive juncture, caught between the need to fuel the green economy, defense and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, without compromising the planet’s future. Balancing these competing demands requires a paradigm shift in technologies and processes. FLS has responded to this challenge with MissionZero: an ambitious, holistic initiative to develop flowsheets for the future of mineral processing. This systemic approach aligns operational excellence with environmental responsibility. Integrating innovative technologies, digital intelligence and commodityspecific process designs, it offers mining professionals a roadmap to meet both production targets and sustainability goals. At the center of this approach is the belief that a more sustainable mining requires more than incremental improvement; it demands a fundamental shift in how we extract, process and manage resources. By developing tailored flowsheets for copper, gold, lithium and tailings reprocessing, FLS aims to set a new standard for efficiency, circularity and environmental stewardship. The message is clear. We must achieve more with less: less energy, less water, less waste.

Using a Mark IV surface force apparatus, adsorption of dodecylamine hydrochloride on mica has been studied at pH 5.7 in the presence and absence of octanol. With amine alone, the repulsive forces between mica surfaces are reduced due to charge neutralization and attractive hydrophobic force; however, the latter is of relatively short-range with its decay length less than 2 nm. In the presence of amine and octanol, the hydrophobic force becomes more significant, its decay length being extended up to 6.5 nm. The increased hydrophobicity in the presence of octanol is attributed to the co-adsorption of the neutral surfactant with dodecylamine, which increases the packing density of hydrocarbons on the mica surface. The increased hydrophobicity due to co-adsorption is reflected in the improved floatability of silica when using octanol as an extender.
