Although cyanidation has been universally applied in the processing of gold and silver ores, the search for less toxic alternatives continues. Difficulties encountered in processing ores containing oxidized copper minerals and the inherently slow kinetics of cyanidation have generated a renewed interest in thiosulfate leaching. This process, as well as the catalytic effects of copper ion, were well recognized and widely applied towards the end of the past century. In this study, the effects of copper, ammonia, and thiosulfate concentrations on gold dissolution were investigated using the rotating disk technique. Extraction of gold and silver from an oxidized copper-bearing ore was also studied utilizing a statistical experimental design, and these results were displayed in the form of contour plots.

A seismic system which utilizes in-mine geophones to detect trapped miners has been developed. Tests at the Bureau of Mines Safety Research Mine at Bruceton, Pa., and at two operating mines indicate such a system has a maximum detection range in excess of 1,000 feet. The system is fieldworthy and portable and requires less than 30 minutes to set up and check. Real-time detection is possible.

During the production of the Geochemical Atlas of Finland till samples were collected throughout Finland at a density of one sample per 300 km2. The material studied was the fine fraction of till (less than 0.06 mm). The geochemical mapping has shown that elements that are locally enriched in bedrock in the form of ore mineralisation are also enriched in a wide area of the surrounding till. These anomalous enrichments of ore elements take the form of rectangular or curvilinear zones that are some tens of kilometres wide and hundreds of kilometres long. The mineralised zones host ore deposits of different genetic types and can be termed "ore provinces". They stand out prominently on the geochemical maps and can be divided into sub-units of different chemical composition.

Introductory: In dealing with a topic so large, one that involves such a multiplicity of details, and that also has certain controversial aspects, it is quite impracticable within the limits of this article to touch upon many most interesting phases and incidents. Also, to bring out the actual truth, it is necessary to make certain categorical statements. The writer believes that all such statements made here-under are supported by facts. Again, however, it is out of the question to cite all the proof. The writer, therefore, will gladly answer any pertinent criticisms or questions and thus supplement the unavoidable brevity of this paper. Controversial points will take care of themselves. Historical: For present purposes the history of gold mining in Nova Scotia may best be summed up in a very few paragraphs, in some of which the writer quotes freely from recent reports compiled by himself. The first material discovery of gold was made in the year 1860. As this and rapidly succeeding discoveries were looked upon as bonanzas, the claims were fixed at a size of 20 by 50 feet, and a yearly rental of $20 was charged. Later the claims (areas) were increased in size to 50 by 150 feet. In the year 1866 a temporarily successful company, so we are informed by a contemporary writer, owned a mill and mining plant worth $6,000. As this fact is cited with admiration, it is apparent that most of the mining and milling must have been done in a very primitive manner indeed.

"While Wearable Technology has been garnering attention in the consumer market, enterprise and industry have just begun exploring its potential applications. Since February 2014, Motion Metrics International has been working in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc. to apply Wearable Technology to improve productivity and safety in the mining industry. This paper discusses the value proposition of using Wearable Technology to deliver critical notifications in mining. The advantages and disadvantages of various form factors are explored. The challenges, both specific to mining and in general to Wearable Technology, are defined. Finally, the concept of MetricsGear™, the first Wearable Technology platform developed for mining by Motion Metrics International in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc., is described. MetricsGear™ is designed to notify the user with minimal distraction to keep the user focused on their primary task, and aware of mission-critical events. This focus and awareness allows the user to work more efficiently and safely. INTRODUCTION The mining process consists of a series of intricate stages, where certain events or conditions in one stage can have a huge impact on other stages. The notification of these critical events or conditions is vital for ensuring the overall efficiency of the mining process. Critical notifications can be classified as two types: time-critical events and contextual information. Time-critical events are situations where a timely response from a responder can have a significant impact on seizing an opportunity or mitigating cost. Some Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) experts classify notification types based on the Interruption, Reaction, and Comprehension (IRC) framework. Time-critical events are classified to have high interruption, high reaction, and low comprehension due to their urgency. The responder should have just enough information to identify the crisis and react as soon as possible (Chow, E. 2014). For example, when a tooth is lost during shovel operation, it is necessary to recover the missing tooth before it jams the primary crusher. The consequence of missing this critical time period is a jammed crusher that can cause the mine to be out of production until the jammed tooth is extracted (Baumann, M. 2013). In this case, the responder only needs to see an image to confirm if the tooth is missing, and information to identify which equipment and when the tooth went missing (see Figure 1). Contextual information is relevant information that is valuable for the receiver to be aware of as it can present an opportunity to improve efficiency or save cost. According to the IRC framework, contextual information is classified as low interruption, low reaction, and high comprehension. They are not as urgent as time-critical events, but provides more detailed and informative information to assist the receiver. For example, when a shovel’s worn tooth is predicted to require replacement soon, a notification to a GET technician can help him or her schedule a pre-emptive replacement of the tooth in an already planned maintenance to prevent having to reactively schedule another one when the tooth is critically worn. This helps reduce the amount of equipment downtime to maximize production (Baumann, M. 2013). In this case, the receiver will look at the information when he has a moment to spare to get a quick forecast, and make use of this information as needed (see Figure 2)."

"Diesel-electric trucks are those that have some portion of the convention-al mechanical drive train replaced by electrical components. As larger and more powerful diesel engines appeared, the development of mechanical transmissions and related drive components failed to keep pace, and electrical generators and drive motors therefore came into use as an efficient means of transferring the mechanical energy of the engine to the driving wheels of the vehicle.The Berkeley Pit has been a major testing ground for the evolution of this type of truck. We now operate a haulage fleet consisting of conventional diesel trucks and two different types of diesel-electric trucks. There-fore, we have been able to obtain an interesting comparison of costs and performances between these three types of haulage units.In all phases of operation, the diesel-electric truck commands a favourable advantage over the conventional diesel truck, and represents a more efficient and less costly means of haulage. Nearly all manufacturers of heavy-duty trucks are now building, or have plans to build, such a truck."

The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent to as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas, and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. In the manufacture of natural gasoline from wet gas which contains hydrogen sulphj.de, if this contaminating gas is not first removed, some of the hydrogen sulphide may oxidize to form free sulphur and water. The free sulphur will dissolve in the gasoline produced by any of the aforementioned methods and cause the product to be positive to the corrosion test and there-fore unsuitable for commercial use in that condition. The objectionable sulphur compounds can be removed by washing the gasoline with a solution of caustic soda or other chemicals, but this treatment is expensive. It is advantageous therefore to remove the hydrogen sulphide from the gas before it is processed in a natural-gasoline plant.

IN VIEW of the wide publicity given to the charges by the Couzens Committee of the United States Senate of discrimination by the Bureau of Internal Revenue in favor of the copper companies, it becomes a matter of interest to consider the basis for these charges. The point to be determined is whether they rest on a foundation of fact or are purely and simply matters of opinion. The whole question boils down to the purpose of the Tax Law as applied to mines, which is to afford the same protection to them as provided for all other taxpayers, namely: that they were to be allowed to pay back as depletion to their owners the values of their properties as they existed or were estimated to exist on May 1, 1913, free from tax. To determine these valuations it was? necessary to select from a wide range of possibilities a set of values for a number of essential factors.

Quantitative methods are, by now, a standard tool of the mining industry, and are commonly used by Research Departments in their evaluation of production methods and schedules, and their associated costs. Indeed, much sophisticated computer work has been devoted to such evaluation of controllable costs and capital requirements. These data are an important input into the project evaluation formula, which is probably the most important single calculation per formed by a mining company, since the result decides whether a particular project is viable. It is instructive to summarize the broad principles of project evaluation, since they are crucial to the remaining sections of this paper. PROJECT EVALUATION The most widely used method of appraising projects is known as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. Two main variants are used; they are known as the 'not present value' (NPV) approach and the 'internal rate of return' (IRR) approach respectively. The difference between the two is that the former takes the firm's interest rate as given and uses this knowledge to calculate the present value of the project; whereas the latter calculates the highest interest rate the project could tolerate and still just breaks even. The technique is more simply discussed in terms of the first method (NPV).

In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the mineral resources of tie Bruneau River and Jarbidge River study areas, Owyhee County, ID, for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The study areas, separated by a narrow corridor, include 90,000 acres of the 107,020-acre Bruneau River Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-17) and 47,000 acres of the 75,340-acre Jarbidge River Wilderness Study Area (ID-17-11). They lie 26 miles and 55 miles, respectively, due south of Mountain Home, ID. Approximately 38 placer claims for gold and 182 lode and placer claims for jasper, agate, and limestone were located within and adjacent to the study areas from 1893 to 1981. Currently, there are eight mining claims for jasper at Indian Hot Springs along the corridor between the study areas.

The steelmaking process requires the input of ferro-alloys to implement the adjustment of some elements composition in the final product. In the particular case of stainless steel production, the high carbon FeCr alloy stands out as one important precursor. However in the production of this material a certain quantity of fine powder with remarkable chromium and carbon content is also generated, which, in turn, could be processed through alkaline roasting in order to selectively recovery this element in a subsequent aqueous route. In the present work, this process is investigated, using excess of NaOH as oxidizing agent, and H2O2 for precipitating chromium as Cr(OH)3, which is next calcinated to Cr2O3. According to the results, the global achieved recovery has shown to be around 98%, suggesting that the proposed route can be seen as a potential process for chromium oxide production from the mentioned fine powder.

"Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. The industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. The longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal-producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called “spin to stall” in Australia. Spin to stall was first introduced in Anglo American Coal in South Africa where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African spin to stall resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible due to a significant difference in geotechnical conditions, mining method, and, subsequently, roof bolting equipment. Therefore, a new spin to stall development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia (SPIN2STALL®). This paper summarises the journey of this project, the results, and the successful implementation of spin to stall achieved at Grasstree Mine.INTRODUCTIONThe Anglo American Coal business unit operates Grasstree and Moranbah North underground longwall mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, with a third longwall mine, Grosvenor, currently being developed, and two more (Aquila and Moranbah South) in the project pipeline. The vision for Anglo American is to achieve “Zero Harm” through the effective management of safety at all operations, while for the coal business unit, at the same time to achieve industry-leading operational performance. Currently, both Grasstree and Moranbah North longwalls are operating at industry best practice rates. This is placing increased pressure on the development process to allow such high productivity levels to be sustainable."

Drilling and Blasting are two important unit operations in the production cycle of a mine and a strong link exists between these two and other unit operations/subsystems like loading, transportation, and crushing. Under the present concept of ? Mine to Mill?, it is important to optimize the drilling and blasting operations by applying scientific approach to drilling and blasting using sophisticated instruments and new technologies, which depends heavily on Information technology (IT) to meet this imperative. Development of innovative models and software has lead to blast optimization process. Till date, the blast results are evaluated in terms of available empirical approaches like powder factor, which are too simple to exclude some key parameters or lack in providing reliability because of non-availability of user friendly IT enabled techniques. Although with the help of developed approaches, formulation of user-friendly software to assist the site engineers in effective post blast assessment has started but there is a dearth of holistic approach to design an optimum blast considering the techno-economic feasibility of the subsystems and the geo-mining conditions to achieve blast optimization. The science of IT enablement in drilling and blasting is capable to build innovative models for achieving blast performances which will be doped with productivity, economy and safety with due regard to environment. The present paper discusses the use of existing IT enablement in various mines of India citing the Indian scenario and the future requirements for achieving the techno-economics in overall mining operations.

THIS P APER has been pre-pared as a progress report on Mines Branch investigations into problems of ground stress in certain co al mines of Western Canada. As such, it should be considered as a companion report to the one ( 1) presented to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia in 1956 and which dealt with similar investigations in the coal mines of Eastern Canada. For the past 50 years, dynamic incidents in the form of 'bumps' and 'outbursts' have been occurring in the coal mines of the Inner Foot-hills belt of tl1e Canadian Cordillera. As these phenomena generally become more frequent with in-creased thickness of overburden, a limiting depth of mining of 2,500 feet has been set (2) for estimating recoverable reserves of coal. If such a view were accepted, from a long-term viewpoint very large resources of coking-grade ?coal -in a part of the continent deficient in such coals -would not be available to the nation. The terrain in which these in-6dents take place may be described in geological terms as being dominated by pronounced structure in strata ?consisting of a large proportion of highly indurated rocks. The Geological Survey of Canada has co-operated by carrying out structural studies (3) at the mines, supplemented lithological by stratigraphic observations.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a shield and compressed air for construction of a short section of a pair of twin single-track tunnels for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) transit system. Although only two blocks long, this section posed the greatest difficulties to both engineers and contractors, and is the most expensive section of line construction on the MARTA system. All this derives directly from its setting--these tunnels had to be constructed through mixed-face conditions. SETTING The Broad Street tunnels form a link between the Peachtree Center and Five Points Stations, in the heart of Atlanta's central business district (Figure 1). Peachtree Center sits atop a solid rock ridge, which inspired the design of a deep rock-mined station, as described in the 1979 RETC. Five Points Station is MARTA's hub--the intersection of the system's two main branches. It is located in the old railroad gulch, a filled-in erosional valley at the base of Peachtree Ridge, and was constructed by open-cut methods. The alignment and profile of the Broad Street tunnels were closely constrained by these two adjacent anchors, and in the six-block stretch between them there was very little room for maneuvering. Since the rock ridge petered out about in the middle of the section, it was evident at the outset that there would be about two blocks of rock tunneling at the north end, two blocks of soft ground construction at the south, and two blocks of mixed-face in between. It is this central two-block section that is the focus of this paper.

"In preparing this paper, an attempt was made to obtain results of plant-scale carbonization tests on washed and unwashed coal tram to same mine. A letter. in which the following questions were asked, was sent to some 50 coke-oven superintendents and others who might be interested:“What is the influence of washing coal on:(1) The chemical and physical properties of coke, as for example, the size, the amount of breeze, the fracture, strength, cell-structure, etc.(2) The quantity and quality of gas and by-products.(3) The capacity of the ovens.(4) The composition of the coal..""Your general opinion, as well as any specific data or results of testa, on this important subject will be greatly appreciated.""Of the 45 replies received, 24 stated that they had never used washed coal; 11 had used washed coal but had no comparative data on similar coals washed and unwashed; 7 answered some of the questions based on their general experience; and 3 gave some test data on Pittsburgh bed coal from western Pennsylvania. In none of the three tests did the washed coal come from the same mine as the unwashed. The washed coals in the three tests were from the same washery - one of modern construction in which the operations are under careful technical control in order to give a uniform product containing a minimum of surface moisture. The unwashed coals which were previously used in these plants were from different nearby mines in the same coal bed, and were supplied by the same company. Obviously, no sweeping or finale conclusions can be drawn from these few tests on coal from a single washery. Therefore, the writer vas obliged to consult the literature, coal-carbonization and coal-washing engineers, and other authorities to supplement the fragmentary information gleaned from the questionnaires in order to present a picture of chat gas engineers may expect from the use of washed coal in a carbonizing plant."

EVER since the introduction of the Siemens regenerative furnace, it has been recognized that a certain amount of gas is lost each time the furnace-action is reversed. This loss comes, first, from the gas which passes through the free connection between the stack and the gas-main, which exists during the time the reversing-valve is turning over; and, secondly, from the gas which is in the chamber and flues, from the hearth to the reversing-valve, and which flows back into the stack when the valve is reversed. The amount lost each time is, of course, small; but, since a furnace is reversed from four to six times every hour for, say, 300 days in the year, the aggregate is large enough to be well worth attention. The estimate has been published' that, in Germany alone, the loss from the first of the above causes amounts to 500,000 marks per year. The loss from the second cause is, of course, much greater. A process for saving this entire loss, in use at Teplitz, Bohemia, for about three years, would seem to be of value even in this country, where coal is cheaper and where the small economies are not watched as closely as they are in Europe. This process, invented by Mr. Adelbert Kurzwernhart, late Technical Director of the Teplitzer Walzwerk, has been worked out with thoroughness. The loss from each cause can be calculated very closely for any particular furnace, and the results to be expected from the process ascertained. It can easily be decided, therefore, whether it is worthwhile to adopt it under any given conditions. "Following the adopted strategy for making the production modern, efficient and environmental friendly the Company completed a stage of the integrated program aimed at reconfiguration of its processing capacity.Upgrade of the Talnakh Concentrator with commissioning of two start-up facilities (SF) allowed an increase of 30% in its ore processing capacity up to 10 mtpa. In addition to a new high-tech equipment installed, a new concentration process was adopted offering the main advantage of 25-30% reduction of sulfides in concentrate. New concentration technology enabled the total amount of produced nickel concentrates (from Norilsk and Talnakh Concentrators) to be processed at upgraded smelting facilities of Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant and allowed decommissioning of smelting capacities of Nickel Plant resulting in emissions reduction by 30%.Nornickel plans to boost the capacity of Talnakh Concentrator to 18 mtpa by 2022, after commissioning of the 3rd SF. This will provide a shorter route for ores transportation from Talnakh mines along with improvement of cost/performance ratio of ore processing through the usage of the modern equipment and optimized concentration flow scheme. Total capacity of Talnakh Concentrator will be sufficient to process ores from Talnakh deposits with planned upstream assets development taken into account. Volume of ore mined from Norilsk deposits to be processed at Norilsk Concentrator will be also increased.Upgrading the crushing section at Kola MMC Concentrator in 2015 provided finer particles of the crushed ore, resulting in 6.6% increase in specific capacity of ore mills as well as 1% higher recovery of non-ferrous metals due to improved liberation of ore minerals.In 2015-2017 the Company was actively engaged in optimization of existing process flow schemes and parameters of Kola MMC, new high-performance reagents were adopted for concentration process, namely, collectors, depressors, flocculants. These measures allowed the Concentrator to reduce its annual operating unit costs and ensure sustainable production of concentrate with the lower grade of the incoming feedstock.Launched in October 2017, Bystrinsky GOK’s Concentrator was 3D designed and received a range of advanced technological solutions.All design process procedures and technologies rolled-out at the Company’s concentrators were developed by Russian R&D institutes, with the key role of Gipronickel Institute, R&D Service of Kola MMC and Polar Division's in-house Engineering Support Centre."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study in which the magnetic fraction of urban refuse was used as melting stock in the preparation of high-strength, low-alloy and carbon steel. Product steels, made from incinerated steel can scrap, nonincinerated-nondetinned steel can scrap, nonincinerated-detinned steel can scrap, and dilutions of these scraps with No. 1 heavy melting scrap, were used in continuing tests in industrial, rural, and marine environments to determine the effect of residual elements and atmospheric pollutants on their atmospheric corrosion resistance. The respective commercial steels were exposed at the same time to establish baseline corrosion data for the test sites. Weight-loss data are reported for atmospheric exposures of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 3.8 years. The marine environment was the most corrosive; the industrial environment was the least corrosive. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of the carbon steel was improved 25 pct by using incinerated scrap and nonin-cinerated-nondetinned scrap in the steelmaking process. In no case was the atmospheric corrosion resistance of carbon steel degraded by using the magnetic fraction of urban refuse as melting stock. The presence of sulfur in the corrosion film was the most important factor affecting the corrosion resistance of the steels. With increasing sulfur concentration, the rate of the corrosion reaction was reduced and the corrosion film became more protective. The residual elements in the product steels most responsible for improving corrosion resistance were copper and tin. These elements tended to increase the concentration of sulfur in the corrosion film. At the levels present in the product steels, Cr, Ni, and Pb had no observable effect on the corrosion resistance of the steels.

South African underground hard rock mines are typically managed using measurements made daily, weekly or even monthly of key parameters such as face advance, readiness to blast, blast success, temperature or dust levels. Health, safety and productivity can all be greatly improved if a real-time measurement system can inform decision making. To enable this vision of widespread sensing, communication and decision support, CSIR has developed an open standard architecture for communication of sensor data, and a reference implementation using that standard. The standard, called AziSA, meaning ?to inform? in isiZulu, will allow any device that complies with it to join any network that supports it. The standard is designed for South African gold and platinum mines. To be practical in a typical Bushveld platinum mine, a real-time sensor system needs to be robust, reliable and cheap: ?Sensors are equipped with power sources that will last as long as the sensor is required. In effect, sensors need to be disposable: cheap enough not to warrant repair if they break. ?Communication in the stope is wireless, to avoid there liability problems associated with wire connections. For example, wires to sensors in the face area are unlikely to survive blasting. ?To get information out of the stope, the power line to the scraper winch is used as a communications link. Unlike a separate communications link, the power line will be repaired if damaged, because of its importance to production. ?Outside the stope, communications are transferred onto the mine communication infrastructure. To succeed as a management system, the next key element is the use of software decision support tools that will analyse masses of real-time data to extract key parameters and trends for decision makers. A range of sensors has been developed, including commercial sensors that have had wireless adapters added to make them AziSA compliant, and bespoke sensors that provide low cost sensing of typical mining parameters. An important parameter in any sensor network is the location of the sensor. This has to be easy and cheap to establish, so a tool has been developed to locate sensors in the confines of a stope, using ultrasonic and radio techniques. Once sensors are installed and located, they associate their location to all data that they produce. All the data from the system are captured at surface in a flexible database that can be queried by any application that requires data of any kind. The first implementation of an AziSA compliant system is being installed as part of the Mine Health and Safety Council funded rockfall elimination project.
