The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

The Cigar Lake ore body is a high-grade uranium deposit situated within water-saturated sandstone. In order to extract the uranium ore remotely, ensuring minimal radiation dose to workers, and also to access the ore from stable ground, the Jet Boring System (JBS) was developed. This method of mining involves drilling a pilot hole up through a frozen ore body and utilizing a high-powered water jet to mine out cavities. During the mining process an ultrasonic sensor will be used to provide feedback to the operator, who is located beneath the ore body, as to the dimensions of the cavity. However, more precise data is required to determine final shape, volume, and location of the cavity for mine planning purposes. Selecting a device that will provide sufficient range data in the challenging environment will be vital to optimizing the mining process. Major issues include fog build up and flying debris during mining, and an environment that is wet, dark, and cold A test cavity has been designed and constructed at the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) so that a study comparing three different technologies, as prospective candidates for the survey system, can be conducted. The devices being evaluated include a Senix ultrasonic sensor, an MDL Cavity Auto-Scanning Laser System (C-ALS), and a MESA Time of Flight (ToF) camera. The ultrasonic sensor is known to provide range data in foggy conditions but has low accuracy. The C-ALS has been developed for surveying remote cavities but is expensive and does not provide reliable data in fog. The ToF camera provides a high volume of data in a short time period, with potential to provide accurate information in extreme conditions, but has not been tested in a mine cavity application. Iterative closest point (ICP) registration is applied in an attempt to create a 3D point cloud from the scan data and to also compute rotation and translation of the ToF camera. This paper presents an overview of the challenges involved in conducting a survey within a JBS mined cavity, the analysis used to determine the suitability of each device, and the data collected from the test cavity.

The evaporation of crude oil without doubt causes one of the largest single losses to which the oil is subjected after it is taken from the ground. The few days during which crude oil is stored on the lease before being taken by the pipe line, causes an aggregate loss per year from evaporation estimated at 122,100,000 gallons of gasoline in the Mid-Continent field alone. This has a value, at 22 cents per gallon, of $26,880,000 and represents about 3 per cent of the total gasoline produced in the United States from all fields and all sources. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. Lucerne Valley California operation is one of the largest producers of high brightness high purity fme grind limestone products in western North America. The San Bernardino Mountains area of southern California contains the largest high brightness, high purity limestone mining operations and undeveloped reserves in western North America (Fig. 1, Brown 1987). Combined annual production of high brightness limestone products from several operations is approximately 1.5 million tons, with an estimated gross value of $75 million dollars per year (Fig. 2). An additional 5.0 million tons of cement grade limestone is mined by several large cement producers in the nearby Mojave area (Brown, in press). The purpose of this paper is to summarize the geologic setting, genesis and mining of white, high purity crystalline limestone by Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc.

A general outline is given for the determination of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, manganese, uranium, molybdenum, vanadium, sulphate and fluoride by polarographic or amperometric methods in a variety of ores or metallurgical products. The detection of oxygen in gas mixtures by an amperometric method used as a safety device is also discussed. Introduction I N this paper, a general outline will be given of the polarographic and amperometric methods used for the chemical analysis of various ores and metallurgical products in the Chemical Analysis Section of the Extraction Metallurgy Division of the Mines Branch. The methods to be discussed will be confined to those based on the use of normal D.C. polarography and will not include those methods which utilize a cathode-ray, square wave, pulse or A.C. type of polarograph. For the sake of convenience, ? the polarographic methods will be discussed according to the type of supporting electrolyte employed, as the same electrolyte may serve to determine more than one element in more than one type of ore. "This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2016 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY), and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2016 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2016 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals, (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash) and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2016 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data and government-funded exploration activities."

The long-term corrosion behavior of Haynes 230 (H230) alloy in MgCl2–KCl eutectic salt was evaluated at 1273 K for 500 h in Ni crucible in argon gas. The results showed H230 alloy has good corrosion resistance. In addition, corrosion was noted to occur by depletion of Cr, which was deposited on the Ni crucible. Based on the calculation of Gibbs energy of Ni-Cr alloy and exchange current density of Cr in MgCl2–KCl, the Tafel model was constructed to investigate the corrosion potential and rate. The galvanic corrosion can be explained as the predicted results were in agreement with the experimental data.

One of the several important problems that had to be solved at that time was the rapid and precise determination of uranium in ores and concentrates.GeneralThe chemical analysis of uranium ores is a long and difficult business and is complicated by the presence in most ores of a large number of interfering elements. True, much progress has been made, during the past few years, toward simplification of the analytical methods, but the chemical determination still remains the job of a skilled operator. For this reason, the chemical method has been replaced, whenever possible, by a physical determination based on the measurement of the radiations emitted by the elements of the uranium family. There are several types of instruments suitable for these measurements, but of all the radiation detectors known to the physicist, such as ionization chambers, crystal detectors, scintillation, proportional counters, and the like, the Geiger-Mueller counters have proved to be the most satisfactory for routine determinations, because of their simplicity.The Geiger-Mueller counter is a very versatile instrument; it can be constructed to detect any type of radiation, corpuscular -0r electromagnetic. Here, however, we are interested in these counters because of their ability to detect the beta and the gamma radiations, both emitted by some members of the uranium family. The beta radiation is corpuscular, and is composed of fast electrons, while the gamma radiation is electromagnetic."

In recent years great advances in the automatic control of flotation plants have been made, mainly due to the development of reliable sensing instruments to monitor process performance and the development of an adequate understanding of system responses to process disturbances. Some of the control strategies used in flotation plants which apply computer control are presented here. These schemes, which involve the control of collector; depressant, frother, and air and pulp level, are analyzed with respect to their control objectives, control variables, and the instrumentation involved. The knowledge gained in understanding these strategies may be applied in the dew and implementation of control system in other concentrators.

The introduction reviews the tunnelling carried out in Singapore since the early 1980s. Between 1983 and 1990, Phases 1 and 2 of the mass rapid transit system were constructed. These included some 20 km of bored and cut and cover tunnels together with 18 underground stations. Some particular points of interest in this massive project are briefly commented upon. Reference is also made to other underground or underwater schemes undertaken during this period such as the proposed large caverns project and the submerged tunnel to Pulau Seraya. A description of the subsurface works, now under construction in Singapore, follows. This includes an all underground North-East railway line 20 km long with 16 stations. At a budget of US$ 3 billion, this is a major civil engineering undertaking. Another project is the extension of the railway to Changi Airport which involves 3.5 km of twin tube tunnelling together with a major underground station which is fully integrated into the airport terminals. An on-going program of further major railway extensions over the next 10 to 15 years is in place and an outline is given of some of the most important underground sectors. Other proposed projects such as the underground roads system and the deep level sewers are briefly described. Together they demonstrate the very significant volume of underground construction scheduled for the next century in Singapore.

The 1960's were an apparent turning point in the technological and social attitudes and awareness of the mining industry. From the late 19th century through to the early 20th century, one has always been presented with the picture of the rough and ready leaders of the mining industry who screamed for production and damned anything that got in the way of it. This attitude led to a certain alienation of the mining industry in the eyes of the general public. They saw an industry which was archaic in many of its practices and often heartless in its attitudes towards mankind. However, a gradual change spread through the industry and cracks began to appear in the hard facades of the mining companies. Resistance to change had almost become a standard operating procedure for many and consequently changes in technology had been slow in coming. The late 1950's and the 1960's saw a new awareness come into existence. As the mining company managements changed, there developed a realization that considerable efforts had to be made to bring the technology and social standing of the industry out of the dark ages and into the modern world. New advances were made in both metallurgical and mining technology. The 20th century technology of computers was accepted and became a standard tool of the industry.

A norma ASTM E517 estabelece um método de ensaio para a determinação do índice de anisotropia plástica de metais laminados, um importante parâmetro em processos de conformação mecânica por estampagem. Atualmente nenhum laboratório é acreditado pelo Inmetro na realização desse ensaio. Assim, o Laboratório de Metalurgia Física (LAMEF) da UFRGS optou por aumentar seu escopo de acreditação para abranger esse ensaio. O objetivo do trabalho é apresentar as adequações gerenciais e técnicas ao Sistema da Qualidade existente para a extensão de escopo, assim como as não conformidades encontradas e os pontos fortes para obtenção da acreditação junto ao Inmetro.

Cable shovel requires continuous monitoring through excavation to achieve reliability, longevity and economic usage. The operating environment and the stress and deformation fields on the front-end assembly must continually be monitored to avoid random fatigue failure. In this paper, the authors advance frontiers of cable shovel reliability through real-time stress and deformation monitoring during excavation. Cable shovel boom stress and deformation analysis are developed using a combination of flexible and rigid body approach. A virtual prototype is developed to simulate the cable shovel excavation in oil sands and to examine the motion, stress and local deformation of the boom. A numerical example is used examine cable shovel boom durability using stress and deformation fields simulation. The results show that stress and deformation are large around the joint between the upper body and the boom. The simulation of the effect of material properties on boom deformation shows that the deformation is larger in hard formation than in soft formation. The study provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

"To allow various wastes containing high levels of chlorine to be used as alternative raw materials for Portland cement, two practical methods of chlorine removal were developed. In the first method, chlorine is extracted from the wastes during the cement manufacturing process. In the second, ash-dust waste with high chlorine content is first washed and then dehydrated to cake before being introduced to the cement manufacturing process. This cake can be used as an alternative for some cement raw materials. By combining the two methods, various wastes previously considered unsuitable for recycling due to their chlorine content can often now be used in cement manufacturing plants. As such, these methods represent a major contribution to environmental protection as well as a solution to problems relating to the diffusion of heavy metals and dioxins from cement plants.1. IntroductionWaste generation levels have risen rapidly in recent years. in both the consumer and industrial sectors and today, the need for effective, efficient waste management is one of the most pressing and serious problem of today's society.The Japanese cement industry has reacted to the increase in waste generation by using certain materials as alternative raw inputs or fuels for cement production, in an effort to contribute to society and conserve energy resources.These wastes often contain non-negligible levels of chlorine and heavy metals, however, both of which are unsuitable for cement production. Depending on the element content, Heavy metals have a particularly negative effect -on cement quality; in addition, they can be released into the environment. Chlorine, on the other hand, is contained in large amounts in incinerated ash from household wastes as well as in certain plastics. Both substances are considered impediments in cement-production, not only because they reduce the quality of the cement produced but also because they impair operating safety on cement production lines.To address this problem, two practical technologies have been established for separation and recovery of chlorine components during cement pre-processing and production. This paper introduces the application of these technologies with a special focus on incinerated ash from urban wastes, a representative form of waste material having notably high concentrations of chlorine, heavy metals, and dioxins. We also outline the technologies enabling this material to be used as an alternative input to cement production."

"Wear resistant 25% Cr hard cast iron is a heterogeneous material containing 1,600 HV hard chromium carbides embedded into martensitic matrix. It is the most used cast alloy in wear operations of mining industry, chemical industry, fracking, etc. During the last decade the hard iron manufacturers increased wear resistance in the following ways: • Reduce / eliminate harmful retained austenite and chromium + carbon depleted areas especially within eutectic carbide cells. In Max5A the improved 25% Cr alloy brittle carbide eutectic cells are removed which increases toughness. • Delay delamination between chromium carbides and matrix particularly during sliding abrasion wear. Delamination commences at the weakest chromium carbide – matrix contact lines exposing chromium carbide to localized bending stresses which gradually chip carbides away. Once the chromium carbide base is removed accelerated wear degradation occurs. • Evenly randomize and avoid discontinuities in the chromium carbide network. When chromium carbides are perpendicularly positioned to the wear surface wear rate is minimized. On the contrary the highest wear rate takes place when 3D oriented chromium carbides are parallel with the wear surface. In this case chromium carbides cover top network discontinuities being just matrix supported which leads to rapid carbide cracking. The new hard iron discussed in this paper fulfils and exceeds the above requirements increasing the casting service life around 250% in various wear operations. Physical and mechanical properties of Max5A are compared with well manufactured Industry Standard 25% Cr hard iron. The paper presents practical accomplishments obtained in the USA, South America and India. INTRODUCTION The chemical composition of Max5A and Industry Standard 25% Cr are identical like specified by ASTM A532 Class III Type A requesting C = 2.0-3.3% and Cr = 23.0-30.0%. Manganese, silicon, nickel, molybdenum and copper contents are limited by maximum accepted quantities.[1] According to published data the eutectic chromium carbides chemical composition of 25% Cr hard iron is Cr = 54% and C = 8% which indicates strong depletion of chromium and carbon along chromium carbide - matrix interfaces. [2] The optimized Max5A microstructure has minimized retained austenite, is devoid of harmful carbide eutectic cells and has the most advantageous chromium carbide and secondary chromium carbide morphology. This favorable microstructure increases wear resistance, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The paper compares the Max5A microscopic features and mechanical – physical properties with similar properties of high quality Industry Standard 25% Cr."

SCRIPTURE, statistics and imagination all were drawn upon by the speakers who acclaimed Daniel C. Jackling as recipient of the William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal for 1930. The award was made at a special dinner at the Ritz-Carlton, in New York, on Oct. 31. Lafayette Hanchett, old friend and associate, said that if it were his task to compress the life story of Daniel Jackling into a single sentence, he could find noth¬ing so appropriate as these words from the 22nd Chapter of Proverbs, "See'st thou a man diligent in his business, he shall stand before Kings." Mr. Jackling's diligence, according to the speaker, his love for his task, have been outstanding in his career. W. S. Boyd, now ranking official in the Jackling organization, cited amazing statistics as to the quantity of copper supplied to industry by the four "porphyry". coppers that are under Mr. Jackling's immediate direc¬tion, as well as by those that, in a sense, owe their existence to the pioneer work at Utah Copper. In the aggregate- 16,000,000,000 lb. of copper having an approximate value of $2,700,000,000 have been produced from disseminated ores since 1905; and of this total 42 per cent came from Utah and the Nevada group. Newcomb Carlton, president of the Western Union Telegraph Co., long an admirer of Mr. Jackling, adroitly drew a picture of a similar occasion in some 'foreign country. He imagined Mr. Jackling being raised to the peerage and whimsically addressed him as Sir Daniel, the Right Honorable Earl of Bingham!

The principal official test performed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the permissibility of coal-mine explosives, commonly referred to as the gallery test, has been in use at the Bruceton station for many years (2, 16).4/ In this test the explosive under study is loaded into the borehole of a steel cannon and fired into a flammable mixture of natural gas and air or natural gas, air, and coal dust. To meet the requirements for permissibility, the explosive must not ignite the gas mixture under the conditions of the test. There is little doubt that these tests have succeeded in the main objective, namely, to screen the relatively safe from the relatively hazardous explosives. It has been generally conceded that adoption of permissible explosives by the coal-mining industry in the United States has substantially reduced the frequency of disastrous underground explosions caused by blasting. In recent years, however, research workers planning programs for improving the safety of coal-mine explosives have felt the growing need of a more quantitative method for measuring the incendivity of explosives based on a better understanding of the role of the important variables in the gallery tests, Accordingly, it was decided to apply certain statistical methods and techniques to the gallery test to develop it into a more precise tool for evaluating permissible explosives. One of the first and more important methods applied for this purpose was the up-and-down technique (6,7,17), It was demonstrated (14,15) that the weight of the explosive charge directly affects the ignition probability of the natural gas-air atmosphere and that the curve of ignition probability versus charge weight is a cumulative normal curve. Following these experiments, a program, still in progress, was set up to study how the addition of sodium chloride to various permissible-type ex-plosives affects their incendivity. "The objective of this research is to study the quality of blast-furnace iron ore pellets with binary basicity 1 fired on a pilot scale using the two main firing processes that are presently in use in the world and comparing them. Currently, the great majority of pellet producers use the traveling grate process because of its higher production capacity. In this study, the physical and chemical qualities of the pellet feed, limestone, anthracite and bentonite were determined and the amount of additives for a blast furnace pellet with the defined basicity was calculated. The physical properties of the green and dried pellets were determined accordingly. Produced pellets, after being fired on a pilot scale using traveling grate and grate kiln, were subjected to chemical analysis and physical testing. No significant difference was observed in the metallurgical quality — that is, reducibility index (RI), reducing disintegration index (RDI) and swelling index (SWI) — of the pellets produced by both processes. However, a comparison of cold physical tests — tumble and cold compression strength — shows improved quality of the pellets fired using the grate kiln process.IntroductionThe development of human civilization owes much to iron and steel (Sun et al., 2015). Iron is the most used metal in the world, and it is the main component of steel, which is present in materials for structural engineering, automotive and general industrial applications (Liu et al., 2014). Increased global demand has led to a decrease in the resources of ore with high iron content (Zhang et al., 2015), and currently 95 percent of the iron ore in China needs processing before smelting as its iron (Fe) content is only about 30 percent on average (Liu et al., 2014).Pelletizing is a process to economically agglomerate iron ore pellet feed into pellet form. After balling, green pellets are conveyed to the final step of the manufacturing process (Pena, 1982). The process is a multifaceted one, involving high temperatures, air flow gas turbulence and complex equipment geometry (Larsson et al., 2009). The pellets are fed into blast furnaces, which are now predominantly used in the extraction of iron. Ore processing also requires physical separation, including crushing, grinding and water removal (Sun et al., 2015).The increase in steel consumption favors the exploitation of low-concentration ores and the production of pellets (Halt and Kawatra, 2014). Pellet quality is affected by various factors, such as their physical and chemical characteristics and their temperatures and residence times in the furnace (Halt, Silva and Kawatra, 2015). Different geological settings lead to a wide range of different minerals (Graça et al., 2015).This work aims to generate important information for the pellet industry in the area of physical and metallurgical qualities of the agglomerates obtained by two processes: traveling grate and grate kiln."

Introduction The relationship between precious metal miners and gold refiners has been uneasy over the years. Reasons for this uneasiness and lack of trust include technical factors, economics of scale, and cultural differences. Technical factors take two forms. First, concentrates, precipitates, and sponge produced at the mine site are notoriously difficult to sample. A nonrepresentative sample can be the cause of misunderstanding and distrust. Dote, however, is relatively homogeneous and can be correctly sampled and analyzed with greater reliability. Second, the technology and chemistry of fine gold and silver production is complex and quite different from dote production. Most mining companies are content not to be involved with additional processing steps. From the standpoint of process economies, it is easy to see why miners and refiners are separate groups. Mine location is dictated by the natural occurrence of ore bodies. Heavy capital investment requirements for infrastructure in remote locations usually limits companies to produce the first marketable product from a mine. Beyond that point, the economies of scale and large capital investments for refineries generally dictate that the outputs of several mines be combined to feed a single refinery. The refin¬ing process is so complex that refineries are generally built in larger cities with a skilled labor pool. Therefore, only the largest mines can afford to refine their own output. Lastly, there are cultural differences between the miner and the refiner. The miner, particularly the small gold miner, is by definition a risk taker in a risky business. Refineries, on the other hand, have historically been operated under legal or implied monopolies approved by the government. The government is interested in owning gold, either for currency reasons or because many national mints are major users of gold coins. It is not surprising, then, to find that miners may regard refiners as part of an unresponsive government bureaucracy or, worse, as "city slickers." It is easy for the two groups to distrust each other with these different backgrounds. The interface between miner and refiner does exist and affects nearly all precious metal mining companies and most refineries. This paper discusses the technical and economic aspects of the interface. It points out how both parties can improve the relationship. Technical interface Precious metals selectively dissolve to produce a pregnant solution. They are then recovered from solution by zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe process) or by absorption onto activated carbon. This is followed by stripping and electrowinning. At this point, the mining company must decide whether to ship precipitates (or sponge) to refiners or to produce a dote. Some factors the company must consider are the ability to sample precipitates, concentrates or sponge, security of storage, and production rates. An important factor is the incremental cost (capital and operating) of converting precipitates or sponge into dote at the mine. Generally, mines prefer to melt precipitates or sponge to dote to avoid prob¬lems associated with sampling them. There are three types of fur¬naces used by mining operators to melt precipitates to dote. The first and most widely used is a sil¬icon carbide crucible heated ex¬ternally with a gaseous liquid fuel. The crucible is easy to use and slag can be skimmed before pouring dote. This simple system is capable of handling 1 t/a (32,000 oz per year) gold. It could cost as little as $20,000. More complex systems could cost up to $200,000. The second type of furnace is the gas- or propane-fired rever¬beratory furnace. This is usually used only by large-scale opera¬tors in the silver business. Precip¬itates in reverberatory furnaces come in direct contact with the flame. The large volumes of flue gas can carry significant amounts of dust and fume that must be re¬moved from the gas before dis¬charging it to the atmosphere. In the days when the Rand re¬finery in South Africa used reverberatory furnaces, the silver leaving the furnace in the form of vapor and fume was estimated at 2.2% of the total silver charged to the furnace. The gold in the gases was about 0.03% of the gold charged. Most of this silver and gold was recovered in the exhaust gas scrubber system. These scrub¬ber systems can be more costly than the furnace itself.

With a focus on exploring the potential of mining waste, the characteristics of materials from the Vazante and Ambrosia units were evaluated to determine their suitability as aggregates in the construction industry, as well as to identify other possible applications.
