A mathematical model was developed to study fluid flow and solidification in a single-roll casting system. Fluid flow coupled with energy equations were solved numerically using a finite volume method. A body-fitted coordinate transformation technique was adopted to handle the irregularly shaped domain. In order to couple the continuity and momentum equations, a SIMPLEC algorithm was used. A fixed-grid enthalpy method was considered to model the solidification in the system. The turbulence effect on flow field was modeled using a low-Re k-e model The model developed in this work was further run under various conditions to optimize the operating parameters of the process.

An aerial magnetometer survey was carried out by the author's geophysical organization over the Vredefort dome, where Witwatersrand beds are wrapped around a granite plug 25 to 30 miles in diameter. The well- known magnetic shales of the Lower Witwatersrand system (to be referred to as LWW) give strong negative anomalies over the out-cropping portion of the dome. This is unusual as these same shales -cause positive anomalies over large areas near Johannesburg and along a strike of 130 miles between the East Rand and Klerksdorp. It is suggested that the negative polarization is caused by heat and stresses connected with the doming. This negative polarization of sedimentary beds, which usually cause positive anomalies, is a good example of how "magnetic lows" can be caused by "structural highs." Significant magnetic anomalies should be tested by gravity and seismic methods irrespective of the sign of the anomalies.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Martabe gold mine is Indonesia’s largest precious metals-only producer and is also one of few significant hard rock mine developments in the past 15 years. Martabe is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra in the North Sumatra province. The mine commenced operation in mid-2012, producing over 280 koz of gold and 1.5 Moz of silver in its first full year of production.Martabe consists of a cluster of six currently identified high-sulfidation epithermal deposits. The deposits lie in a north–south corridor with an approximately 8 km strike length and 1.5 km width. The total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of the deposits is currently 8.2 Moz of gold and over 75 Moz of silver.The exploration program at Martabe has added more than 2 Moz of gold and 15 Moz of silver to the Mineral Resource estimates (Measured, Indicated and Inferred categories) since G-Resources acquired the project in 2009. This has been achieved at an average cost of US$17 in exploration expenditure per ounce of resource added, which includes helicopter-supported drilling programs in rugged forest terrain.The factors that led to this exploration success at Martabe include: in the first instance and most importantly, recognition of the geological potential of the mineralised system continually updating and improving ‘orebody knowledge’ and applying new ideas to the exploration program ongoing engagement and consultation by world professionals with geological expertise in similar systems ongoing executive management support for the program the high quality of work completed by previous owners a strong focus on quality control, staff development and operational safety, with the JORC Code (in particular Table 1 of the Code) as the underlying basis for quality control continual and positive engagement with government, community and other external stakeholders.This paper will discuss in detail the first of these two factors. "Thin Spray-on Liners resist relative small deformations (< 1 mm) between rock blocks or fragments in terms of a combination of shear, adhesive and tensile-bond strengths. Shear-bond strength addresses the ability of a thin liner to resist stresses that act parallel to the rock-liner interface. Therefore quantification of shear-bond strength is essential in the formulation of design standards and requirements for Thin Spray-on Liners. In this paper Thin Spray-on Liner support mechanisms are reviewed. In addition previous methods of Thin Spray-on Liner shear-bond testing are discussed. The paper also explains the research being carried out at the University of Cape Town to investigate the effect of different parameters on the shear-bond strength.INTRODUCTIONRock surface support is widely used to combat rockfalls and resulting injuries and fatalities in the vicinity of active faces (Potvin, 2002), where workers spend most of their time (Adams & Baker, 2002; Potvin, 2002; Lacerda, 2004). The conventional (traditional) surface support systems in underground rock support include passive methods such as mesh and lacing and active methods such as shotcrete. However, rockfall sources between 1990 and 2000 in Nevada gold mines showed a steady increase in rockfall injury associated with mesh support as shown in Figure 1 (Lacerda, 2004). The conventional methods also negatively impact the mining operations with regards to costs, logistics and mining cycle times due to large material volumes (Tannant, 2001; Ozturk & Tannant, 2010; Ferreira, 2012). Therefore, these systems need to be substituted, with enhanced methods, in order to realize the business target of the mining industry of providing the planned return on investment made without harm and within budget."

Complexation of a metal ion to a ligand often results in structural changes that introduce steric strain within the ligand. A design criterior:1 for ligands that will complex metal ions more strongly is to choose Iigar:1d architecture, that minimizes this strain. This paper describes how molecular mechanics models can be used to define the degree of ligand binding site organization in terms of&apos; ,strain energies associated with conformational reorganization and distortion of the binding conformer. This approach yields a method to predict how modifications to ligand structure will affect metal binding affinity.

Oven widths for experimental and commercial slot-type ovens differ appreably in most instances; the experimental ovens usually ranging from 10 to 14 inches and the commercial units from 14 to 21 inches. Application of results obtained with experimental ovens to commercial practice thus requires major extrapolations. A critical survey of the literature indicated that sufficient information about the effects of variations in oven width on the carbonizing process is not available to permit such extrapolations to be made with any considerable degree of confidence.

A laboratory-scale investigation was made of the basic problems involved in developing a ceramic heat exchanger to operate at high temperatures for using nuclear heat from gas-cooled process-heat reactors. Technical data were obtained on transferring heat by forced-convection from helium to air in a single-tube vitreous-alumina heat exchanger. Coolant air was passed through the annulus parallel with, and either concurrently or counter to, the flow of helium inside the tube. The data obtained pertain to removing heat from the helium. Average inside film coefficients were determined at mean surface temperatures of 200° to 1,570° F., inlet-gas temperatures of 1,450° to 2,665° F., and Reynolds numbers up to 560. The gas-to-surface temperature ratios were varied from 1.05 to 7.6. The tabulated results are shown in the appendix at the end of this report. The film coefficients of heat transfer were correlated by taking into account the physical properties of the helium at the average fluid temperature. With experimental conditions pointing to a laminar flow, the Nusselt number was found to decrease as the ratio of gas-to-wall temperature was increased to a value of 3. However, within the range tested, gas-to-wall temperature ratios above 3 did not affect the Nusselt number, regardless of the value of the Graetz number. Thus, beyond this point any increase in this ratio ceased to influence the heat-transfer relationship.

"Oil-shale camps are peculiarly favored, in that before they are establishes it can be ascertained with a degree of certainty, that the life of the project is not limited. Unlike camps at metal mines, where the metal content of a given area is frequently an unknown quantity until after years of development, oil-shale camps should, from the outset, be planned and. built as permanent types of camps. Where this procedure is followed camps will be established which better serve the needs of the industry and the cost of their general care and upkeep will be less.Selection of camp or townsite.The site of the camp or town' whether on company property or not, should be selected with care. It should be separate if possible from the location of the plants of the company so as to be free from noise and fumes and so as to provide a change of environment for employees in going from their work to their homes.The principal features governing the site to be selected are as follows:Drainage. The general contour of the surrounding country should be such that drainage is away from the site. The camp or town should, if practical, be situated on higher ground than that in its immediate vicinity.Soil. The nature of the soil on which the camp or town is located may bear a decided relation to health. A porous, well underdrained top soil of at least four feet in depth insures dryness and facilities the placing of foundations and the laying of water mains and sewer pipes. Such a soil also is an advantage in growing trees, shrubs and grass plots, which are a decided adjunct to making the community attractive.Enviroment. The contiguous territory should afford no unwholesome sur¬roundings such as swamps Or accumulations of stagnant water.General Considerations. The water supply to be provided and the method of disposal of wastes influence to a certain extent the location of the camp or town-site. This paper is the second of a series of progress reports on a study, of the hydrometallurgy of manganese which is being conducted in an endeavor to make possible utilization of the large deposits of low-grade domestic manganese ores that occur in several States. There are at least four processes in which a knowledge of the action of SO2 gas on manganese oxides at elevated temperatures may prove of value. One ,of these involves dissolution of manganese from ores. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the hydrometallurgy of manganese by a process in which SO2 gas, a waste product at many smelters, is passed into water to form a solvent for manganese. Although Several manganese minerals acre readily dissolved, rhodochrosite (MnCO3) was attacked but superficially.§. Recent experiments have shown that a roast at 650 to 900°C converts the manganese of rhodochrosite to a form that is quickly dissolved by a weak SO2 solution. Introduction of smelter gases containing as much as 5 per cent SO2 during such a roast would not add much to the cost of the operation and might result in the formation of considerable water-soluble manganese sulphate.

"The work by H.K Worner and co-workers at CRA in the 1960s, and early 1970s, established that molten metals could be refined continuously utilising counter current flow of metal and slag. Womer also demonstrated that counter current refining could produce highly refined metal products. These developments coincided with the advent of high intensity metallurgical reactors in both the ferrous and non-ferrous industries (e.g. BOS, Q-BOP and later Sirosmelt) that utilised high levels of gas injection to produce rapid stirring and very fast reaction. These new generation of high intensity metallurgical reactors allowed high tonnage rates through relatively small volume vessels.Whilst, it is well known that the counter current flow of reacting phases offers the potential of efficient mass transfer and high purity products, the application of counter current reactors to molten metal/slag systems has been criticized on the basis that they suffer from either low intensity or, alternately, from poor refining due to excessive dispersion. These criticisms relate to the balance between intensity and the refining capacity of a reactor. That is, whilst high levels of mixing transversely to the direction of flow promotes high mass transfer, longitudinal mixing (dispersion) is detrimental to refining. Of course, mixing in one direction invariably leads to mixing in other directions, thus creating a playoff between high mass transfer and excessive dispersion.This balance between intensity and refining has been the subject of recent studies overseas, and at"" the University of Wollongong, using cold modelling techniques to evaluate the effect of mixing on dispersion in a counter current refining launder. These studies have shown that for a given geometry and mixing regime, dispersion decreases with increasing flow of liquid phases. This means that whilst high mass transfer cannot be achieved in a refining launder without sacrificing the degree of refinement, there is no impediment to achieving high productivity through such a system, in fact, high through puts may favour good refining. Thus, it may be possible to match a high productivity smelting operation with a equally productive counter current refining stage."

There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

Optical technologies have progressed rapidly in the past 15 years. One application of laser technology in underground coal mines currently under evaluation is the remote measurement of explosive methane gas. Federal regulations require that atmospheric monitoring systems used in gassy underground mines where permissible equipment is required shall be intrinsically safe. Mine Safety and Health Administration criteria for the evaluation and testing of intrinsically safe apparatus and associated apparatus contain no specific guidance for optoelectronic components such as diode lasers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting a study to help provide a scientific basis for developing appropriate safety guidelines for optical equipment in under- ground coal mines. Results of experiments involving ignition of methane-air mixtures by collections of small heated particles of Pittsburgh seam coal and black iron oxide are reported. The inert but more strongly absorbing iron oxide targets consistently ignited methane-air mixtures at lower powers than the coal targets. Minimum observed igniting powers for laser energy delivered by 200, 400 and 800 pm core fiber optic cables and directed onto iron oxide targets in methane-air atmospheres were 0.6, 1.1, and 2.2 W, respectively. Comparisons with the results of other researchers are made. A thermal layer theoretical approach to describing the process is included as an appendix.

The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) held its biennial conference May 14 through 16, 2006, in Keystone, CO. SEG is an international organization with about 3,500 individual members with interests in economic geology. The 2006 SEG conference theme was “Wealth creation in the minerals industry — integrating science, business and education.” The conference exceeded expectations with 705 participants, including 102 students, from 44 countries. The conference featured 30 oral presentations, 24 professional posters and more than 70 student posters. The conference also included a trade show with 50 vendors, numerous field trips, workshops and social activities.

"IntroductionMaintenance is a business, which to be successful, requires good management, systems and reporting. The prime objective of the maintenance management group, be they large or small, must be to anticipate and prevent interruptions in operations by keeping equipment in good mechanical condition. This objective should be carried out at minimum cost consistent with maximum productiveness.The objective of this chapter is to give an insight into the various aspects of maintenance management that must be considered to effectively and efficiently operate a mill complex. The degree to which the maintenance sub-systems are developed in an operating mill will be determined by the size of the mill and the needs of the operation.The criterion of the management system used is that the system serve the operation and not vice versa. The systems presented should be considered as tools and, as with all tools, they must be sharpened and replaced as the need arises or as more effective tools become available.To understand what is involved in maintenance management, it is worthwhile to consider a systems approach to analyzing management problems. This approach was developed by J.A.B. Rae while reviewing maintenance management systems for Cominco Ltd.A very simple system involving managing results and objectives is shown diagrammatically in Figure 1.The systems approach to organizational development involves four basic elements: an objective, a result, an activity and feedback. In the analysis, the activity element is broken down into individual actions that people could be held responsible for. If we introduce the action of operating into the diagram of Figure l, we arrive diagrammatically in Figure 2."

In a benchmarking paper published in the SAIMM Journal, Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou (2008) reviewed ground control strategies to manage large deformations in underground hard rock mines. Significant differences were identified in the design and acceptable tolerance between civil and mining engineering practice for squeezing ground conditions. Variations were also noted in ground support strategies between Australian and Canadian mines. In this paper we review progress in design methodology and ground support practice since 2008, including the availability of more effective deformation monitoring, new design tools, greater access to yielding ground support elements, and better installation practices. An improved understanding of technical and practical issues associated with squeezing conditions has led to the development of ground support guidelines for a range of squeezing ground conditions in hard rock mines.

The stratigraphy of the central Pine Creek Geosyncline has been simplified into a three-fold subdivision comprising the Batchelor, Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. The Batchelor Group consists of a sequence of shallow water coarse clastics and crystalline carbonates and is conformably overlain by the marine carbonaceous shale dominated Frances Creek Group. Interbedded within the carbonaceous shale are turbidites, iron formation, tuffs, carbonate and non carbonaceous shale. The Finniss River Group is a flysch sequence of greywacke and mudstone. The stratigraphic and structural evolution and igneous history are all interrelated. Although the Batchelor Group may have formed in a tensional regime, it is likely that regional compression and accompanying thin skinned deformation began during deposition of the Frances Creek Group. Continued compression resulted in D2 folding d6collement deformation, wrench faulting in compressional zones and thrust faulting. Occasional relaxation of compression is marked by a number of periods of basic intrusion and perhaps distal volcanism. The style of deformation within sediments varies away from granitic basement highs and is similar to that observed around salt domes and found in experimental diapiric models. Sedimentary facies changes also indicate local emergence of basement highs during sedimentation. As compression continued, the deposition of thick sequences of the Finniss River and El Sherana Groups brought about regional metamorphism. Relaxation of compression and waning of associated subsidence resulted in a relative increase in the rate of uplift and partial melting of diapiric sialic basement. In places, granitic magma moved upwards and crystallised forming grossly concordant bodies. Other masses moved laterally and formed extensive granitic sills. Later compression periods caused mainly brittle deformation which may have been strongly influenced by underlying basement fabric.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to assist explorationists and entrepreneurs in deciding whether to invest in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs) and, if so, in deciding which LDCs provide the best opportunity. The first decision is difficult in the face of common notions that foreigners are not welcome - only their money; that the best gold deposits were worked out long ago; that even if you survive the mal- aria, and in spite of 51% control by a national partner, you manage to profit from a new discovery, they will tax your operation to death, or worse yet, nationalize it. Close scrutiny of what happened to foreign investors in LDCs during the “Mexicanizationt” of the 1930&apos;s through the "Zambianization" of the 1970&apos;s shows that many of these concerns are well-founded historically. But the trend of knowledgeable writers over the past decade seems to be away from this gloomy foreboding, and towards a cautious optimism, based on recently perceptible metamorphoses in certain LDCs&apos; conditions and attitudes. If the explorationist or entrepreneur decides to seize on this apparent opportunity, the second decision -- which of these certain LDCs to invest in -- is doubly difficult, because of the formidable tasks of coming up with a rating system to provide rational comparison, and then gathering enough current, reliable information to apply. TROUGH it is not a condition of the Award, the fact is that the John Fritz Medal never has been given to an engineer who had not already received one or more similar awards. This "medal for medalists," on the evening of April 20, was presented to Daniel C. Jackling at a special dinner held at the Union League Club in New York. The citation read "For notable industrial achievement in initiating mass production of copper from low-grade ores through the application of engineering principles." The present award recognizes the same accomplishment-the launching and guiding to the port of marvelous success of the Utah Copper Co., first of the so-called "Porphyries"-as did the award of the William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal by the A.I.M.E. in 1930, and before that the Award of the Gold Medal of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America in 1926. Following the custom a biography of the Medalist had been published in a small pamphlet as a supplement to the John Fritz Medal Book. T. A. Rickard was the au¬thor of the sketch of Mr. Jackling, an innovation being the placing of a copy of the booklet at the place of each of the diners. The committee in charge of the dinner consisted of two past-presidents: R. E. Tally, of the A.I.M.E., who was chairman; Bancroft Gherardi, of the A.I.E.E.; and Thaddeus Merriman, director of the A. S. C. E., the John Fritz Medal being a joint award of the four societies. Frederick M. Becket, President of the A.I.M.E., as chairman for the occasion, briefly stated the purpose of the dinner. He stressed his satisfaction that the award was symbolic of the cooperative professional activities of the four great national organizations of engineers. He introduced Francis Lee Stuart, past-president of the A.S.C.E. and now chairman of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award. Mr. Stuart outlined the history and purpose of the Medal established in 1902 in memory of John Fritz, of Bethlehem, Pa., one of the great pioneers of America&apos;s iron and steel industry, metallurgist, and president of the A.I.M.E. in 1894. Mr. Stuart called the roll of former John Fritz Medalists, three of whom, Ralph Modjeski, J. Waldo Smith, and Ambrose Swasey, were present to do honor to Mr. Jackling. He then introduced George Otis Smith, whose privilege it was to present the Medalist for 1933. Dr. Smith was the senior of the four A.I.M.E. representatives on the Board that last year selected Mr. Jackling for the honor. His speech follows in full.

Long-term water management is typically ignored in mine closure planning. A review of 73 mine closure plans dating from 2007 to 2013 shows that, on average, relinquishment is proposed to be achieved in 11 years. A separate review of 57 mines in actual closure shows that only five have so far achieved relinquishment with an average closure period of 14 years after production cessation. The remaining 91 per cent of sites in closure have an average closure duration to date of 21 years - and still going.A common issue among those sites in closure is water management, with a further common issue being acid and metaliferous drainage (AMD). Of the closure plans that were reviewed only one site had allowance for long-term (&gt;50 years) of water treatment. Of the sites in actual closure 25 per cent have reported that they expect such long-term water treatment, with many acknowledging that in perpetuity treatment is probable.Clearly there is a gap between what is being allowed in closure plans and the reality of closure. There are a number of factors leading to the optimism of the closure plans, including unrealistic assumptions, pressures to reduce closure cost provisions and the technical complexity of many AMD issues.Long-term water management is a reality that needs to be acknowledged and addressed. If addressed early in the mine life cycle the impacts for mining companies can be reduced.CITATION:Byrne, G, 2013.
