Past investigations on waterborne impurities in the flotation process have been concerned primarily with the treatment of specific ores with particular local waters. Although some anions and cations present in water are known to react with flotation reagents, a definitive study has not been made on the effect of such common ions upon the flotation process. This report describes the fundamental research undertaken to define and measure the adverse and/or beneficial effects of different concentrations and combinations of several common anions and cations when oleic acid is used to froth-float limestone from a pulp of quartz and limestone. Research on the effect of waterborne impurities upon the flotation process was composed of two equally important phases. The first phase comprised development of a procedure for floating limestone from quartz that would give the same results in test after test. Some difficulty was encountered, but once such a procedure was developed, the second phase, comprising study and measurement of the effect of various ions c on to natural water upon the flotation of limestone, was quickly completed.

This program was initiated by USBM to quantify the respirable dust problem caused by the use .of roadheaders in underground metal/nonmetal mines with special emphasis on this problem in uranium mines. The contract called for the development of methods or equipment to alleviate the respirable dust and to implement the solution in a mine. Attempts to quantify the dust problem were made in the following way: survey of MSHA records, survey of state mine enforcement agencies, survey of mine records, dust measurements taken at two mines using roadheaders. The results of this study are not conclusive due to very limited and sometimes less than useful data; however, the study does indicate that a serious dust problem could and may exist. If and when roadheader use becomes more popular, it is almost certain that development of dust control procedures and equipment will be necessary. This contract was concluded without developing this equipment since only one roadheader is currently in use in an American uranium mine and the mine prefers not to participate in the program at this time. This report discusses the available data concerning respirable dust problems and presents a solution which can potentially help to solve the problem. The solution requires the use of blowing ventilation, on-board dust extraction at the source, and filtration, as well as continued use of water sprays. The on-site tuning of such a system is necessary to demonstrate the degree of improvement possible.

The general manager was C. S. Batterman, and the mines- Mountain View, Pennsylvania, Leonard, East Colusa, and one or two others-were part of Boston & Montana.

In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay and shale mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may, in many instances, cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, it is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed to consider operating costs. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scone of the cost tabulations shale ensue. The open-pit recovery of clay and shale is a comparatively simple operation in comparison with underground mining; nevertheless, it represents an appreciable factor in the cost of manufacture.

Pennsylvania anthracite coal is almost universally recognized to be the solid fuel best suited for domestic use when cleanliness , convenience and cost are considered . At various times and in various localities , however, conditions so affect the supply that it becomes insufficient or is too high in price and recourse must be had to other fuels as substitutes . In practically every district in the United States where anthracite has been the common domestic fuel , some other fuel is available as a substitute . In even the most severe climates such fuels are used either as emergency substitutes for anthracite , or as the ordinary domestic fuel . There may be some drawback to the use of such fuel , such as the need of more frequent attention to the furnace , smoke , soot and dust , in the case of solid fuels lower in price than anthracite , but these inconveniences must be accepted as necessary accompaniments to a decreased fuel bill . The cleanliness and ease of handling anthracite in the house must be considered in the light of a luxury and a higher cost of heating with this fuel must be expected . That a growing number of people are willing to pay for such added convenience is evident from the increasing mumber of heating installations using oil , gas and electricity , all of which are more convenient and usually more expensive even than anthracite .

Calorimetric determinations of low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines for basic aluminum sulfite, A1203?2.0S02?5.3H20. The standard values of entropy (S°), enthalpy of formation (?Hf°), and calculated Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) at 298.15 K are 85.2±0.1 cal/deg-mole, -943.1±1.2 kcal/mole, and -820.7±1.2 kcal/mole, respectively.

SOME 20 years ago, upon finishing second year at the University of Manitoba, I was faced with the choice of whether I wanted to be a geologist or a chemist. Accordingly, I sought out Professor Brownell, Head of the Department of Geology, to ask him what a geologist did. His reply contained the statement that following graduation one went out into the field in northern Canada for 5 to 15 years to reduce to practice what had been learned at university. To a young man, very socially conscious, even one year, let alone 5 to 10, in a small mining community sounded like being banished to a monastery in the Himalayas and thus I turned to chemistry. Moving to the present, last month I asked a geologist, and then a mining engineer, what does the fresh graduate in their field do these days? The reply was: usually serve an apprenticeship for an indeterminate period either underground or in the field learning the job.

A new high intensity flotation process FASTFLOT was deployed to recover residual zinc from the zinc circuit tailings at Pasminco Mining's Concentrator, Broken Hill. Performance of the FASTFLOT process is discussed with respect to various size fractions. Results suggest that the process has an affinity not only for fine particles but also for +200 ¦m particles which the conventional flotation cells failed to recover. Various strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also discussed.

To provide a relatively structurally stable form of dried lump lignite, two North Dakota lignites from Mercer County were dried by the Fleissner process in an atmosphere of saturated steam at 200, 300, and 370 p.s.i.a. pressure, corresponding to steam temperatures of 382°, 417°, and 437° F., respectively. Two series of experiments were made at each test pressure with the individual lignites. In one series, the autoclave was preheated to the processing temperature before charging the lignite; in the other the lignite was charged into the autoclave at room temperature. In each case, heat losses were determined by blank tests of steam consumption over a similar operating cycle with the empty autoclave. The degree of moisture removal and net steam consumption were calculated from material balances. The amount of water removed as a liquid from the two North Dakota lignites during the heating and steaming periods was compared with results calculated from previously published data on drying Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal. These lignites, covering a wide geographical area, had original moisture contents ranging from 35 to 49 percent. The Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal are considered to be of Miocene Age, and the Dakota lignites belong to the Paleocene.

"We review the application of advanced numerical techniques such as adaptive mesh refmement, implicit time-stepping, multigrid solvers and massively parallel implementations as a route to obtaining solutions to the 3-dimensional phase-field problem with a domain size and interface resolution previously possible only in 2-dimensions. Using such techniques it is shown that such models are tractable even as the interface width approaches the solute capillary length.IntroductionMulti-scale modelling impinges upon many areas of science, engineering and technology where the interplay between processes occurring on disparate length and/or timescales can affect the properties of systems in a complex, and sometimes unforeseen, manner. One such is the processing of materials where interactions at the atomic scale, through the nano- and microstructural scale can have a profound affect on the macro-scale response of engineering components. Here we focus on one such problem, the crystallisation of alloy melts, to illustrate how a range of advanced numerical techniques make the modelling of such systems tractable.The modelling of solidification structures, in particular the growth of dendritic crystals, is a subject of intense and enduring interest within the scientific community, both because dendrites are a prime example of spontaneous pattern formation and they have a pervasive influence on the engineering properties of metals. For alloy systems, which form the vast majority of engineering materials, solidification involves the rejection of both solute and latent heat from the growing solid, forming a coupled diffusion problem in which both the chemical and thermal diffusion equations should be solved. The multi-scale nature of this problem arises from the disparity between the thermal and solutal diffusivities for most liquid metals, which are typically 10-5 m2 s-1 and 10-9 m2 s-1 respectively. The ratio of these two, referred to as the Lewis number (Le =Dia), is therefore typically of the order 10,000 and gives a measure of the multi-scale nature of the problem. In fact, in many cases the thermal diffusivity is so much larger than its solutal counterpart that thermal diffusion is considered instantaneous, wherein the system can be approximated as isothermal such that the multi-scale calculation does not need to be performed. This is certainly a reasonable approach in most conventional castings. However, there is a class of solidification problem in which this approach is far from satisfactory, namely Rapid Solidification (RS). The application of isothermal phase-field models in such situations are highly likely to produce spurious results or to fail totally, particularly for temperatures below To (the temperature at which the free energies of the solid and liquid phases are equal at the concentration of the bulk alloy), wherein partitionless solidification may occur."

The White Cliffs diatomite deposit occurs in a lacustrine facies of the Quiburis Formation, an Upper Miocene to Pliocene basin-fill sediment of the lower San Pedro Valley. On-going geo-logic mapping has defined an 2.5-3.0 m (8-10 ft) thick ore zone near the mill site, several marker beds, a NNW-trending high-angle normal fault, and a NW-trending syncline. The diatomite has an average loose-weight dry bulk density of 130 kg/m3 (8 lbs/ft3) and is presently marketed outside Arizona for asphalt filler. Current development is projected to yield 3500 mt (4000 st) of finished product, with an estimated 91,000 mt (100,000 st) of finished product obtain-able from several other nearby sites.

"During 2007, Codelco-Chile carried out industrial tests to validate the Continuous Converting Process in the Teniente Converter of the Codelco Norte smelter.For planning and starting up the tests, a predictive, analytical and dynamic model was developed to support operational decisions. The dynamic model was developed using the METSIM® platform and dynamic data exchange (DDE) to operate smoothly with MS Excel®. The main feature of this real-time model was the on/off-line ability to work and gather data from either the smelter’s PI system® or database, and simulate the operation with or without scheduled events and controls.The main model development aspects, which include thermodynamics, metallurgical and kinetic considerations, slag-type and on-line mass and heat balances of the process, as well as the successful validation of the model, are presented and discussed in the present paper."

The great majority of stokers used in residential heating installations are of the clinkering type. Because of inherent characteristics of the underfeed combustion process as it occurs in these small stokers, and because of the wide range of operating conditions encountered in residential heating schedules, not all bituminous coals can be used successfully in residential underfeed units. The problem of providing consumer satisfaction has been attacked by the joint efforts of the stoker manufacturers and the coal industry; the stoker manufacturers have been concerned with improving their product to permit the use of a wider range of coals, and coal operators have made every effort to market selected and better prepared coals. In view of the wide range of physical characteristics and chemical properties of bituminous coals, the problems are real and are receiving increased attention. Some twelve years ago a laboratory method was developed at Battelle Memorial Institute for the relative evaluation of coals for use in residential underfeed stokers. The method was developed in conjunction with work being done at that time for Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and for individual coal producers, to obtain information on the characteristics of coal that determined the successful performance of the small stoker. Details of the equipment and test procedure were given by R. A. Sherman1 in a paper presented at the University of Illinois Fifth Short Course in Coal Utilization. During the past several years, the evaluation of over forty different coals has been determined by investigations sponsored at Battelle by coal operators in the eastern producing districts. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results and conclusions derived from the various tests with marketing experiences of the operators, and to discuss briefly the relationship of test results to standard laboratory determinations. Equipment Used in Tests Fig 1 shows schematically the equipment used in the evaluation tests. The stoker is a commercial model of conventional design, having a nominal feed rate of 30 Ib per hr. A special laboratory furnace is used, which is tightly sealed to prevent the entrance of secondary air. The complete stoker-furnace assembly is mounted on platform scales which permits the measurement of combustible weight losses occurring during the test. The furnace stack, in which are a thermocouple, flue-gas sampling tube, and smoke meter, is connected to the laboratory exhaust breeching through a friction-less connection. Positron-Emission-Particle-Tracking (PEPT) has enabled the non-invasive observation of charge and slurry transport in model mills under operational conditions. We use high quality PEPT data to infer that the charge motion can be effectively described by a non-Newtonian granular fluid. An improved theory for slurry transport, including inertial effects, is presented.

ABSTRACT Reconnaissance exploration in the Kuene region Namibia has included geological mapping, soil and stream sediment geochemistry, and ground geophysical methods. Copper mineralization occurs within a well-defined belt with north-northwest to south-southeast trend, parallel to the regional strike of the sedimentary rocks. The occurrences vary in size but are generally stratabound. The mineralization is centred on the transition from calcareous shale and interbedded limestone, through carbonate rocks, to quartzite. Geochemical anomalies have been identified correlating to induced polarization (IP) and magnetic anomalies. The anomalies identify one potential metallogenic zone more than 17 km in strike length.

Objective: On-the-job training (OJT) is a common means of training workers. By definition, it seems relatively simple. However, to be effective, training must go beyond the simple process of following an experienced worker around the workplace— sometimes called the "follow Joe" method. NIOSH researchers spoke with human resources personnel, safety and health specialists, supervisors, experienced miners, and new miners and found that OJT was of high interest, but was rarely part of a formal or standardized program. Various training methods have evolved to ensure that a trainee will absorb the information presented rather than simply emulate what the instructor is teaching. These methods have been brought together into a published guide for developing an effective formalized OJT program. The guide (Information Circular (IC) 9479) is called "Coaching Skills for On-the-Job Trainers." It contains materials and suggestions for your company or mine to conduct a 1-day workshop for teaching OJT trainers how to be better coaches to less experienced workers. The guide was created by the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory and a safety professional from a private mining company.

Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. This report describes apparatus and procedure used for determining the vapor pressure of aviation gasoline in surveys of commercial aviation-gasoline characteristics made by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel and Equipment Committee of the Coordinating Research Council, Inc. (CFR-CRC). The method is a modification of the Reid method, in which a mercury manor is substituted for the Bourdon-type gage of the Reid method. The method was used in earlier surveys made by the National Bureau of Standards in cooperation with the CFR-CRC, and was used in the Bureau of Mines surveys at the request of the cooperating organizations. It is designed for special research problems? particularly in vapor-lock studies, which require a precision greater than obtainable by the Reid vapor pressure method. A repeatability of + 0.01 p.s.i. average deviation from the mean may be obtained by method.

Gas injection into liquid steel baths is widely practiced, ever since the early days of Bessemer’s pneumatic steelmaking process. What has not been fully appreciated is the critical role of bubble sizes for delivering higher quality commercial steels than is presently possible. This was first proposed by Prof P. Hayes and his research group. Using a full-scale water model of a typical 4-strand Ladle-Tundish-Mold system, we demonstrate the potential advantages of modifying a typical ladle shroud, to generate microbubbles within the water flowing into the tundish. This is possible by taking advantage of high shear rates and turbulence kinetic energy available in that region. These microbubbles enhanced the removal of “micro-inclusions” (hollow glass microspheres) in the 5–50 micron size range, to the upper surface of the tundish. There, they were absorbed into an overlaying “slag” phase. Accompanying CFD studies confirmed that no microbubbles in the size range generated (500–900 μm), pass through the submerged entry nozzles into the moulds.
