THE John Fritz Medal Board of Award, at its regu¬lar annual meeting Oct. 19, awarded its gold medal to Herbert Clark Hoover. Thus ended a process of selection begun a few years ago. The award was tentatively made a year ago by the Board, which is composed of sixteen recent past-presidents of the four national societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers, having together a membership of nearly 60,000. The sixteen members of the Board are: American Society of Civil Engineers : C. E. Grunsky, Robert Ridgway, George S. Davison and John F. This paper is intended to deal merely with the commercial development of some of the principal non-metallic mineral resources in the three prairie provinces- Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Coal is not included in this summary. Building Stone First and foremost, mention may be made of the building stone now being produced at Tyndall, Manitoba. This is a mottled limestone and is declared by experts to be one of the finest building stones in America, both as regards durability and appearance. It has been used very extensively both for exterior and interior work, not only in western Canada, but also in the principal cities as far east as Montreal. The stone is the "'Upper Mottled Limestone", which forms the summit of the Trenton (Ordovician) strata in the Lake Winnipeg basin. Quarries are at present being operated at Garson and Tyndall . The area where this stone is known to be available extends in a north and south direction for a distance of three miles, and the main productive ridge is probably about one half mile wide. The outlook for the future of the industry is extremely promising, as the stone is becoming increasingly popular in Eastern Canada, more particularly for interior work.

"This research was conducted to study the changes of microstructure, chemical composition and mechanical properties ofIN718 superalloy after adding aluminum to the ESR process slag. The experiments were performed in VIM and ESR furnaces. The results showed adding 1.5 percent aluminum to the slag increase lave phase in the IN718 samples from 0.34 percent in the base sample to 3.0 percent. It also indicated that the more increase of aluminum in slag cause decrease in the aluminum absorb yield in the superalloy.it is observed that increasing aluminum from 0.7 to 1.1 and then to 1.5 percent caused a decrease of absorb from 91.4 to 76.3 and 74.6 percent respectively due to increasing of aluminum oxidation. According to the results, tensile strength increased and ductility declined in the IN718 samples mainly because of rising the amount of y' volume fraction.IntroductionIN718 superalloy is an iron-nickel base superalloy with constant mechanical properties at medium at high temperatures. For the past seven years a considerable amount of time and effort has been expended by both suppliers and users in the study of Alloy 718 [ 1]. The interest in this material stems not only from the interesting metallurgy associated with the alloy, but with the large usage of the material in numerous applications In fact many people believe that the projected use of this alloy increase significantly over the next several years, The large use of Alloy 718 is the result of its performance in respect to high strength, good ductility, good repair weld ability and from its versatility of being supplied in various product forms. This superalloy is used in wide ranges of industries such as aerospace and gas turbines [2]. In the past more than 20 years many researchers did a lot of work to improve the structure stability of IN718 at high temperatures and intended to develop a new 718 type alloy to be used beyond 650 °C. One of the methods is to control and phase precipitation behavior by means of adjustment of Al, Ti and Nb contents. The other idea is to strengthen the matrix by altering the content of solid solution elements such as W and Co. The adjustment of these alloying elements can change phase precipitation behavior [3]. If detailed information dealing with phase precipitation behavior can be obtained before experimental work for alloy development, a lot of time can be saved and the development cost can also be reduced. In recent years, computer modeling based on experimental data plays an increasing role in alloy design and development. Adding Al to the Iron and Nickel increas the strength of superalloy by formation of y phase and subsequence formation of n phase. Ti in IN718 superalloy also helps the formation of MC carbides and gamma prime phase. Increasing Al/Ti and (Al + Ti)/Nb will lead to form finer particles of y'. More uniform distribution of the precipitates and enhancing stability of y' in IN718 superalloy [ 4]. Adding Al to slag of ESR process can reduce the oxide inclusions because of the strong tendency of Al to oxidation. In addition, tensile properties of IN718 superalloy improve. The most significant inclusions in IN718 superalloy are Alz03 and TiN that were found in agglomerate forms. Thermodynamic calculation results indicate that the effect of increasing Al shows a strong increase in solvus while phase solvus shows mildly decrease when Al level is less than 2%, after that it dramatically decreases [ 5]. Laves phase precipitation and the appearance of phase are occurred when Al content reaches 2%. In fact, when Al content is beyond 1.5%, phase has already precipitated in a considerable scale. Shows the fraction of increases greatly while the fraction of phase decreases remarkably with the increment of Al content. Based on thermodynamic theory, if these particles were not existed in the melt during cooling agglomeration would not accrue and the superalloy will be cleaned By adding Aluminum to the slag, the metal reacts with oxyge"

Sensor-based particle sorting of gold ores is the masterclass of preconcentration. The technical challenges of a grade in ppm scale makes a direct detection with currently available technology in milliseconds impossible. Consequently, the detection and classification of particles into ore and waste classes relies on detectable proxies which are the foundation for the classification. These must be reliable and repeatable across the ore bodies processed in future. A sensor-based particle ore sorting equipment must therefore be calibrated systematically by understanding the gold deportation in different lithological groups. Also, it must be in best operational state to minimise possible misplacement. The technical challenges are met by a stringent financial regime governing the business case. Many gold ore sorting projects require a stable grade of gold in the rejected waste significantly below 1gr/t. Two examples are introduced in this paper:  The pilot results and operational experience of X-ray transmission (XRT)-based particle ore sorting for pebble sorting of sulphide associated ore;  Laser-based particle ore sorting for pebble circuit of an orogenic, quartz associated gold ore. Usually, sensor-based particle sorters are installed in the crushing section of a plant. However, for large capacity plants, the number of equipment required, and the associated material handling costs result in significant capital and operating expenses for plants with 1200tph run-of-mine capacity. As a conclusion, it was decided to investigate sensor-based particle ore sorting applied to the pebble stream of two existing semi autogenous mills.

Systematic field evaluation of known gold and clay occurrences in South Korea has led to the recognition and discovery of both high and low sulphidation gold-silver epithermal systems. These are associated with Cretaceous acid-intermediate volcanic centres in the southern parts of the peninsula. The high sulphidation deposits such as Seongsan and Kohung are characterised by pervasive silica-alunite-dickite-pyrophyllite alteration with anomalous arsenic geochemical signatures. Gold mineralisation is associated with fine grained marcasite and pyrite. A low sulphidation quartz vein system observed at the Tongyoung mine comprises multistage colloform banded quartz-carbonate assemblages, with minor manganese and base metals. Gold and silver occur as electrum and tellurium minerals. Some deposits such as Gasado and Dogcheon display both high and low sulphidation alteration assemblages. Early pervasive silica-alunite-pyrophyllite alteration caps formed by acid fluids with a significant magmatic component, occur above cryptocrystalline colloform banded vein systems. The quartz vein stage hosts the precious metal mineralisation and appears to have been deposited by later neutral fluids generated in part through mixing with meteroric water.

Until recently, the heat treatment of pressure die cast parts has always been considered unpractical because the solution heat treatment resulted in unacceptable blistered parts. This was due to the presence of massive porosity associated with the die casting process where the inflow of metal inside the mold cavity is extremely turbulent. With the steady improvement of foundry practices and the generalization of vacuum die casting, porosity defects have been reduced to the point that a partial solutionizing heat treatment can be applied without any damage to the casting. However the solutionizing temperature must be lower than that applied to macroporosity free castings and for much shorter time. The object of the present study was to determine the optimum solutionizing temperature that can be applied to aluminum 383 die cast brackets along with the optimal temperature and time of aging resulting in the highest improvement in mechanical properties (both strength and ductility). This was done by testing strength and deformation on the casting itself using a specially designed jig; the crushing force to deformation curve was analyzed so as to quantify the improvement in both strength and ductility gained with the partial precipitation hardening heat treatment.

"A limited series of laboratory batch flotation tests was conducted on a suite of calcium-ferrite-based slags made in laboratory smelting trials. The smelting tests were conducted as part of a wider CSIRO Minerals’ research project aimed at developing a single-stage continuous copper-making process. The objective of the flotation work was to maximise copper recovery and iron rejection from slags made in the process.The slags treated included a reduced low copper slag, an oxidised high copper slag composite, and a very reduced low copper self-pulverising slag. The copper content of the slags varied from 2.9% to 14% Cu. The copper was present as metallic copper, oxide copper and copper-calcium ferrite phases with the phase mix related to smelting conditions. The slags were crushed, ground, wet-screened at 355 or 210 µm to remove coarse metallic particles of copper, and floated at natural pH (about pH 11) using reagents and conditions appropriate for the selective recovery of the copper phases.In rougher/scavenger tests on the reduced low copper and self-pulverising slags copper recoveries above 92% were obtained with copper enrichment ratios varying between 2.3 and 2.9. For the oxidised high copper slag copper recoveries were poorer - only 47% of the copper was recovered with an enrichment ratio of 3.3. The presence of the slow floating copper-ferrite phases in the slags limited further (selective) copper recovery. Ageing of the high copper slag, that is, a significant delay between grinding and flotation, resulted in a deterioration of the copper flotation response.The critical parameter affecting the flotation of copper from direct converting slags was found to be the form of the copper in the slag. Slags containing a higher proportion of the more desirable form of copper for flotation will provide the best opportunity for high copper recoveries to be consistently obtained, allowing improvements in the economics of the overall copper-making process."

There is an increasing trend between increasing consumption of water and the production of metal concentrate. Along with this trend we see that ore grades are declining and getting more complex to concentrate around the world. This will not only complicate processing but also generate new requirements for the management of water and waste streams on mining sites. The mining industry is a large user of water and its water consumption is growing rapidly. The processing of lower quality ores requires greater volumes of water. For these reasons, the need for efficient use of water and water management at mine sites is becoming more urgent. The perception of water in the mining industry has changed from thinking about it only in terms of "water treatment" to actually seeing it as a valuable resource, a resource that needs proper management. This resource management needs to involve various aspects, such as optimizing water usage of the entire mine or concentrator site, minimizing fresh water usage, minimizing or eliminating waste generated in water treatment and implementing practices for water reuse and water recycling. This paper presents trends and new developments relating to waste and water management in the mining industry.

The functional safety of programmable electronic (PE) mining systems is an international issue and concern. From 1995 to 2001, 11 PE-related mining incidents in the U.S. were reported by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA); 71 PE-related mining incidents were reported in Australia. MSHA does not have regulations for formal evaluations of the functional safety of PE mining systems. Hence, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with MSHA and the industry, generated the NIOSH safety framework for functional safety of PE mining systems. An overview of the NIOSH framework is given; the key framework elements, the safety life cycle and safety integrity levels are detailed. The safety framework approach has impacted the national and Australian mining industries by enabling the industries to advance from an ad-hoc approach to a formalized and systematic functional safety process. In retrospect, valuable lessons were learned for addressing functional safety and for changing industry perspectives and practices. These lessons continue to benefit mining and are applicable to other industries as well.

The consideration of complex supply chains often highlights multiple system bottlenecks that are localised and dynamic – they shift depending on what variability last influenced the system. Using the understanding of a dynamic system model, synergies between items that tackle localised bottlenecks can be understood to generate a suite of solutions. These can be simple solutions, such as a couple of new conveyors placed in series, or more complex ones, including buffer dynamics (capacity, location, behaviour, etc).Each solution in the suite will have an associated uplift in system performance and an associated cost of implementation. Dynamic simulations can address each situation in turn and estimate the projected improvement it would offer. However, these solutions will have different benefits when implemented together, and each solution will give different uplift depending on what other solutions have already been assumed. If the number of solutions is numerous, traditional dynamic simulation analysis becomes the bottleneck, limiting options analysis to the processing power available.This paper will illustrate the use of a new technique applied as part of a capital growth optimisation project with a major iron ore producer. Metamodelling is the creation of a model of a model; in this case study, the focus is on developing a response surface representing the suite of solutions. This can be achieved through a combination of dynamic modelling and an appropriate mathematical process called design of experiments. The result is an approximation surface of the outcomes of the dynamic model, encapsulating interactions between key elements of the value chain.This modelling approach provides a number of advantages compared to traditional dynamic modelling approaches, including but not limited to:early and rapid evaluation of a large range of potential solutionsaccommodation of multiple initial states of the value chainoptimisation of the overall suite of upgrades (down to route-level upgrades) based on business objectiveseasy re-evaluation of outcomes when key inputs such as costs change.CITATION:Kleinschmidt, T, Foo, J, Reynolds, B and Kennewell, K, 2015. The Meadowbank Gold Project, formerly owned by Cumberland Resources Ltd. and currently owned by Agnico Mines Ltd., is currently being developed approximately 70 km north of Baker Lake, Nunavut, in the eastern Canadian Arctic region. The Meadowbank Gold Project currently consists of a series of gold-bearing deposits within relatively close proximity to one another, which are planned to be mined primarily as a truck-and-shovel open pit operation using conventional gold milling and extraction. The mining plan indicates that approximately 20 million tonnes of ore will be mined over a mine life of eight to ten years. The operation will generate approximately 160 million tonnes of mine waste rock and about 20 million tonnes of tailings. The site is located in an area of continuous permafrost with mean annual average air temperature of -11°C and average annual precipitation in the range of 100 to 200 mm. Lakes cover a large portion of the site, including some of the ore deposits. The location of the site and the physical environment pose challenges to development. This paper presents some of the designs considered to effectively manage and utilize the waste products of mining at the project. Note that volumes, tonnages, construction concepts, and data presented in this paper are accurate for the time of writing and are subject to change and modification as the project progresses, additional modelling is carried out, and additional data are obtained.

Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

Thermal treatment of mineral ores can initiate thermal phase transformations which can affect either their activation or deactivation, subsequently influencing their ability to dissolve in a leaching reagent. The formation of rutile and hematite from ilmenite minerals, for example, has been suggested to occur through a series of reduction and segregation reactions. This process has been used in beneficiating low-grade weathered ilmenite ores to higher grade rutile. Despite decades of re-search, the mechanism of this process is not well understood, because dissolved intermediates are poorly crystalline and are difficult to quantify, with the exception of the final rutile products. Previous studies have shown that disrupted intermediate phases, by thermal treatment, are most susceptible to reagent attack and can often demonstrate ?activation? effects. In this study, synchrotron based X-ray diffraction method was used to investigate in-situ and in real-time the transformation of ilmenite minerals to rutile and hematite during calcination. The rate of formation and disappearance of specific Bragg peaks during the reaction and thermal decomposition of the mineral were used to derive an understanding of the solid-state reactions. The effects of the mineral transformation were validated by laboratory based batch calcination and leaching in sulphuric acid. The results suggest that transformation of major mineral phases occurs within of specific window of operation and thermal treatment appears to influence the extent of activation and leachability of ilmenite minerals.

The presence of magnetite, either dissolved or suspended as solid crystals, in slags from the copper reverberatory furnace is a frequently mentioned cause of an abnormally high copper content in those slags. The presence of this oxide in the slag is to be expected, since it is present in appreciable amounts in both converter slag and roaster calcine which comprise a considerable proportion of the furnace feed. Magnetite is also a product of some of the furnace reactions. These abnormal losses result in several ways. Magnetite is supposed to favor the formation and retention of copper ferrite, in the slag. Crystals of solid magnetite suspended in the slag are objectionable-because they make the slag less fluid and often entrap globules of matte. Frequently these crystals settle into a layer at the slab-matte interface which may have such mechanical strength as to create a false bottom and interfere with furnace operation by preventing separation of matte from slag. Magnetite may, by crystallizing on the furnace bottom, build the bottom to such a level that the furnace can no longer be operated.

The aim of this investigation was to study the influence that varying production rates have on iron sinter quality. This was done by performing sinter pot tests at different pressure drops over the sinter bed, namely 11 kPa and 15 kPa (for 500 mm total bed depths). During each of the sintering processes temperature-time profiles were recorded of the top, middle and bottom layers of the sinter bed. On completion of the sinter process the sinter cakes were divided into top, middle and bottom layers. The physical properties of each layer were subsequently characterized by performing a tumbler test and a sieve analysis. A comprehensive mineralogical study was also conducted on each layer. This study revealed that sinters of similar cold strength could be produced under the examined production rates. However, a higher production rate was accompanied by an increased amount of fines. The cold strengths of both sinters significantly increased from the top layer to the bottom layer of the sinter bed. This strength variation is not related in any simple way to the phase composition. Natural gas and mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen were used as fuels in a laboratory engine to determine the relationship of emissions to air-fuel ratio and to establish practical lean limits for air-fuel ratio. Synthetic gas manufactured from coal (Synthane) and natural gas were used as fuels in a vehicle to obtain comparative data on emissions and performance. Results showed that lean limits for air-fuel ratio when using hydrogen-enriched natural gas were extended significantly beyond Chat of natural gas. Synthane pro¬duced exhaust that was significantly less reactive than exhaust from natural gas. With lean air-fuel ratios, the acceleration performance of a vehicle fueled with Synthane was improved over its performance when fueled with natural gas.

Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains eight miles north of the City of Santa Cruz and inland from the coast, lies a typical beach sand consisting of quartz and feldspar grains of the Santa Harguerita formation of the middle tertiary age, Reserves of over twenty-five million tons of this sand form the deposit presently being harvested by Pacific Cement & Aggregates, a Division of Lone Star Cement Corporation. The deposit ranges from 350 to 700 feet above sea level and varies from two percent passing a 200 mesh screen to ten percent retained on a ¼ inch screen (see Figure '#l) In 1929 the first sand plant went into operation at this site. It was replaced by a new plant in 1937. This plant continued operation until the middle of 1965 when replaced by the modern plant described in this paper.
