It is of interest to know how to obtain as high an absorption efficiency as possible from a CO2-absorption canister used in closed-circuit breathing apparatus. In this study the Bureau of Mines found that varying the bed depth and the cross-sectional area of a canister changes its absorption characteristics. In tests using four ,1 rectangular, variable-depth canisters with different cross-sectional areas, the Bureau found that, given a constant weight of the chemical absorbent, LiOH, and a constant COa input, the canisters with a greater cross-sectional area reached C02 levels of 0.5 volume-percent in the effluent gas sooner than did the canisters with a greater bed depth. However, resistance to flow through the canister increases with bed depth, and a trade-off is inevitable. It was anticipated that the efficiency of a canister would increase with increasing intergranular air space approaching the tidal volume of the breathing waveform and then level off at some point under 100 percent. This postulation was partially substantiated. Cylindrical and radial canisters were also tested and compared. It appears that shape is not as important a factor in absorption efficiency as bed depth, since neither canister differed significantly from the rectangular canisters with regard to absorption efficiency values.

THE following brief description of the status of operations of the Chile Exploration Co. at Chuquicamata, Chile; and of the plant as it exists today, points out the-great progress that has been made since the initiation of prospect drilling in 1912. During the 11 years which have elapsed since then, a group of small mines, eking out a 'precarious existence, has been consolidated into one large operating property,, taking high rank among the world's producers of copper. After a drilling campaign followed by a construction period, the plant first started operations in 1915. Since then production has been gradually increased, as world conditions permitted, until the present status has been reached.

THE USE of the aeroplane in engineering work is quite recent. Its general application to all branches of engineering, including mining and metallurgical engineering, is increasing and its possible uses are most promising. Comparatively little has been published on the sub-ject in the mining and metallurgical press, and it is for this reason that the following notes are recorded. In March, 1922, Prof. E. L. Bruce published an article in the Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute showing the possible applications of the aeroplane to preliminary geological surveys. In October, 1922, Mr. DeShea, representative of the Fairchild Aerial Survey Co., of New York, discussed the subject before the New York Section of the Mining and Metallurgical Society. The writer has been in correspondence with the Laurentide Air Service of Montreal and engineers who have flown. Canada, with its many lakes and rivers-favorable landing places, meets the prerequisite for successful use of the aeroplane in an unexplored and uninhabited or sparsely inhabited country. During the open season hydroplanes are used, and during the, winter season ski runners are attached to the axle in lieu of wheels. With skiis attached it has been found practicable to take off and land on any depth of snow quite readily. Winter flying in northern Canada is quite common. The Laurentide Lumber Co., appreciating the value of the aeroplane, used them for two or three years for timber cruising, and about 1921 turned their equip-ment over to the Laurentide Air Service of Montreal, who operate flying machines. The photographic and engineering work in Canada is done by the Fair-child Aerial Surveys Co. under a contract with the Laurentide Company.

No experimental heat-of-formation value has been reported in the literature for cerium sesquioxide. The heat of formation of bismuth sesquioxide has not been determined in recent years, and the older value was subject to large uncertainty. Accordingly, the heats of combustion of cerium sesquioxide and bismuth metal were measured by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The heats of formation were: ?H°298.15 = -427.01 ± 0.70 kcal. /mole for cerium sesquioxide and ?H°298.15 = -137.16 ± 0.30 kcal./mole for bismuth sesquioxide. The free energy of formation was estimated for cerium sesquioxide and accurately calculated for bismuth sesquioxide. The data were compared with values in the literature.

he Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) supplies water to some 16 million people in a semi-arid region. Most of this water is imported. Some of the supply lines cross over the San Andreas fault, one of the most notorious and active faults in the U.S. There was a serious need for emergency water in case normal supplies should be interrupted. To fill that need, MWD had to find a reservoir site on the west side of the San Andreas fault, west of the mountains. Because of the distinctive nature of the location, it was necessary to construct a huge “bath tub” by building a dam at each end of a valley, requiring some 115 million cubic yards (88 million cu.m) of fill. In effect, two large-scale surface mining operations have been under way simultaneously. The $2.2 billion project is known as the Eastside Reservoir Project. Because of space limitations, this paper will be limited to those topics which are expected to be of primary interest to explosives engineers, principally related to large-scale rock fill production. There is not sufficient space to discuss the many diverse geotechnical questions related to site selection, geological and geophysical field testing, laboratory testing and design considerations. This brief overview may assist those who might be interested in making a tour of the project site following the ISEE conference.

In this work, the age-hardening behavior of cast Al-Si base alloys was investigated. It was found that multiple aging peaks are present in the age-hardening curves of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys. TEM observations reveal that the age-hardening behavior is related to the precipitation sequence of the alloy. For the Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy, the first aging peak is the result from the high-density GP zones, while the subsequent are from metastable phases. The transition from GP zones to metastable phases may be the main reason of the formation of multiple aging peaks.

The instrument comprised a combination of an evaporator of Knudsen chamber type with a mass-spectrometer for analysis of the vapor phase, In the process of studies of molten Cu-Ni-S systems and commercial-grade mattes within a temperature interval of 1400-1800 K the partial pressure of sulfur was measured by means of complete isothermal evaporation and the partial pressure of copper and nickel by comparison of ionic currents. The partial pressure values of the components above the molten Cu-Ni-S were used for calculation of activities of the respective components in the melt. The copper and nickel activity data obtained was used for assessing the amount of dissolved losses of these metals in autogenous smelting slags.

Laboratory size (5 kg) aluminum killed low carbon steel melts were desulfurized with synthetic fluxes in zirconia crucibles. The sulfur, oxygen, aluminum, silicon, and manganese contents in the melt were determined as a function of refining time and temperature. With a good argon shield and synthetic flux cover, melt reoxidation was not observed. Sulfur removal followed first order reaction kinetics. The effectiveness of calcia saturated calcium-aluminate (12CaO.7Al2O3) based fluxes in desulfurizing the steel melts was evaluated. The effects of initial sulfur level of the melt, weight of the flux (slag), and additions of tellurium, fluorspar, and barium oxide to the melt on the kinetics of desulfurization were also studied.

Although the economy in the Province of Saskatchewan has historically been agriculturally oriented, a major new source of wealth has been realized through natural resources such as petroleum and natural gas, coal and uranium and since the 1960's - potash. Potash or potassium chloride, in the form in which it is presently produced in Saskatchewan is used primarily as fertilizer, a source of potassium, one of three essential elements required for healthy plant growth with about 5 percent of production sold to the chemical industry for use in such products as soap and liquid detergent, glass and ceramics, textiles and some pharmaceuticals. Saskatchewan is estimated to have approximately 40 percent of known world potash reserves and its ten active mines account for some 25% of annual world production. The development of this resource was recognized to be important to the development of Saskathcewan. In an effort to guarantee a fair and lasting economic benefit to the Province of Saskatchewan the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) was created on February 4, 1975 through an Order-in-Council under the Crown Corporation's Act and later on April 1, 1976, the Potash Corporation Act provided for its continuation. PCS was given the mandate to acquire ownership of a significant portion of the potash mining capacity in Saskatchewan and to establish an organization capable of operating the facilities, marketing the product and conducting all of the other activities necessary for a successful corporation competing in the world potash industry.

THE free-swelling index, a numerical value for the free-swelling properties of coal, is being used to an increasing extent in specifying coal for burning in various types of equipment. The empirical standard ASTM method for determining this index uses, as a source of heat, a gas burner which requires frequent calibration because gas pressures are not constant, relatively small changes in gas pressure resulting in rather wide variations in the temperature attained in a crucible and thus in the resultant size of the coke button. Furthermore, the quartz crucibles specified for the test are not standard equipment, and relatively small variations in dimension and wall thickness from those specified often result in rather wide variations in the resultant size of the button. A method of analysis to be satisfactory not only for a scientific laboratory but also for use in industrial control laboratories under varying conditions should employ equipment which is rugged, easily calibrated, and readily replaceable by standard materials. Gas is not universally available as is electricity, and it is generally easier to calibrate and control a simple electric furnace or heater than a gas burner, the voltage not usually fluctuating to the degree that gas pressure does. Quartz crucibles are fragile, and the size specified in the test is not normally used for any other purpose in the laboratory. Although more expensive, the 15-cc platinum crucible, available in all laboratories where volatile matter in coal is determined by the standard ASTM method, is sturdy and standard and easily replaced. Because of these considerations, a modification of the standard method has been developed which employs a standard laboratory 350-w cone heater and standard 15-cc platinum crucibles. The results of numerous tests conducted with such apparatus show conclusively that the free-swelling index values as judged by the buttons produced with this equipment are exactly the same as those obtained by the standard gas burner method. Thus it is suggested that this electric cone heater method employing standard 15-cc platinum crucibles be considered as an alternative to the ASTM method, Designation: D720-46. The free-swelling index of coal is determined by means of the ASTM method, D720-46. This method, which is an adaptation of the crucible swelling test for coal of the British Standards Institution, consists of heating 1 g of coal in a special covered quartz crucible in a regulated gas flame for a period of not less than 2.5 min in which time the temperature of the inner surface of the bottom of the crucible reaches a temperature of 82025°C. The residual coke button is then compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles shown in Fig. 1 and designated by number from 1 to 9 in increasing order of size. As the method is empirical, it requires rigid standardization of the apparatus and repeated calibration of the gas burner. The dimensions of the low form quartz crucible recommended must be rigidly adhered to as small variations in diameter or wall thickness result in variations in the rate of heat transmission and thus in the resultant size and shape of the coke button. "The magnetic separation removal rate of pyrite could be improved effectively by increasing the susceptibility of pyrite. The electromagnetic characteristics and absorption response performance of high-sulfur fine coal were studied in strengthening the susceptibility of pyrite. In the process of treating the sample through the microwave, electromagnetic energy could be converted into heat energy due to dielectric loss and magnetic loss. The RL(dB) was evaluate the performance of absorption response of coal. The microwave improved the susceptibility was in ultra-high frequency region, which is the most natural resonance. The absorption fine coal to microwave was strengthened and microwave energy was improved by adding the magnetite powder with double loss characteristics as the microwave absorber. The dielectric properties and permeability characteristics of the fine coal trend were investigated by maxing magnetite powder. The microwave absorption in different coal thickness was surveyed through the reflection of energy loss.INTRODUCTIONMicrowave desulfurization is one of the most important research directions (Haque, 1999; Makul, Rattanadecho, & Agrawal, 2014; Su, Tang, Zhang, Jing, & Bai, 2014). The working principle of microwave absorption response can be briefly described as the interaction of the sample with microwave energy, which will result in the microwave energy converting into heat energy loss (Keangin & Rattanadecho, 2013). For specific samples, the polarization effect includes multiple polarization mechanisms(Meikap, Purohit, & Mahadevan, 2005). Different polarization mechanisms have different occurrence time and dominant mechanisms. Meantime, energy consumption will be occurred during the process of polarization effect (Chelgani & Jorjani, 2011; Rowson & Rice, 1990) . The absorption of microwave energy in the fine coal is a process of electromagnetic response (Znamenácková, Lovás, Mockovciaková, Jakabský, & Briancin, 2005). Microwave transfers the electromagnetic waves into the heat energy by microwave dielectric loss and magnetic loss for achieving the absorption of microwave energy in the treatment of samples (Lee, Kim, Kim, Chung, & Kim, 2004). The additive magnetic medium is Fe3O4 belonging to microwave energy absorber of double loss medium (Uslu, Atalay, & Arol, 2003)."

The use of low-angle forward light scattering for measurement of particle size distribution has been described previously.1 Laboratory instrumentation using this technology is used routinely in operating plants for quality control and production control.2,3 Extension of the technique to on-line process monitoring and control has also been undertaken in several important areas. This paper will discuss the application of MICROTRAC R systems to the monitoring of particle size in wet slurry processes and dry powder grinding circuits. Examples of existing installations will be given with emphasis on performance and on-line reliability.

"IN A SHORT PAPER it is impossible to do much more than to list the industrial minerals found in Saskatchewan and to give a brief description of the activity associated with each. I will not attempt to discuss the geology. It is sufficient to say that the settled part of the Province is covered by glacial drift which varies in thickness from a few feet to several hundreds of feet, and that this has hindered the search over much of the Province.CLAYA notable exception to this is the Cypress Hills area in the southwest corner which did not suffer any glacial action and where we find some of the large exposures of Cretaceous clays. In this area, the majority of the deposits are of stone-ware clays which are •an excellent raw material for such products as face brick and sewer pipe. Although the clay cannot be transported over any great distance it is used extensively in Alberta and Saskatchewan in the production of these products."

The domestic primary copper industry generates in excess of 600 million t of mining and mineral-processing waste annually. Most of the waste poses negligible environmental threat, but a small fraction, because of toxic or corrosive characteristics, may be subject to regulation under Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or other pertinent regulations. Among the wastes generated by various copper producers are flue dusts, slags, refinery-bleed solutions, and. acid-plant wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has researched methods to mitigate the environmental threat posed by copper-processing wastes while recovering valuable metals from these materials. Acid-leach processing of flue dusts has been demonstrated feasible along with sulfide treatment of liquid refinery wastes and acid-plant-bleed and gas-cleaning solutions to precipitate dissolved metals. In, addition, the feasibility of removing copper and molybdenum from slag, as well as stabilization of precipitated sulfide wastes by vitrification, have been investigated.

LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine is a sublevel caving iron-ore mine located above the polar circle in northern Sweden. The mine has been proclaimed seismically active since 2008 after a magnitude 3 seismic event, according to Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN). At that time the Kiruna Mine did not have mine-wide seismic system. Since then, the Kiruna Mine experienced several damaging seismic events of which the largest one on the May 18, 2020. The magnitude, based on the moment tensor inversion results on data from the SNSN as well as seismic stations in Finland and Norway, is estimated to 4.2 ± 0.2 moment magnitude. The seismic event on the May 18, 2020 was located in the middle of the one of the productions areas and caused the major damage in the mine, damaging several kilometres of drifts on six mining levels, some of them beyond the practical repair. These damages affected four of ten production areas on several levels, some more some less. Luckily, no person got injured from the seismic event and the very long aftershock series. An important part in the whole process after the seismic event was information flow and decision-making process. It was very important to keep workers and community informed as that contributed transparency of decision-making and decreased the speculations. Resuming the production in the damaged areas in the safe manner, very soon become main focus for the mine management. It was obvious that not only rehabilitation of the areas is needed to resume the production. It was A MUST to understand the factors behind the seismic event and its mechanism to be able to avoid same situation and prevent seismic event of similar size. Mine engineers had to think outside the box to find the solutions to ‘rescue’ every drift that they could to be able to make good enough base for continued mining of the area. The paper describes actions taken in a very complex process of recovering the area that we from the beginning thought need to be abandon. Seismological analyses of the event on May 18, 2020 and past activity in the area, damage mapping, detailed studies of structures and geology, numerical modelling as well as engineering judgement were used as base for all our decisions how to proceed in attempt to restore mining of the area heavily damaged by 4.2 moment magnitude seismic event, in a safe way.

Meramec Mining Company, a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and St. Joe Minerals Corporation, is engaged in the mining, concentrating, and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during an exploration program to discover new lead orebodies. An airborne magnetometer survey which was run by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Geological Survey, and several min¬ing companies was published in 1950 and showed an anomaly in the Pea Ridge area. Test holes drilled in 1953 and 1954 revealed the presence of a large orebody of probable commercial significance; additional drilling in 1956 and 1957 provided confirmation of this. Meramec Mining Company was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began in the latter part of that year. The Pea Ridge orebody lies under about 1300 feet of sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick, and lies in an approximate east-west delineation. The orebody dips about 800S and is of unknown depth. The ore is primarily high grade magnetite with smaller zones of specular hematite, The Pre-cambrian wall rock is rhyolite porphyry. The mine is serviced through two concrete-lined shafts, 19 feet 1 inch in diameter and 2500 feet deep. No. 1 shaft, equipped with an "A" type head-

A key step in feed water treatment for generating wet steam for thermal oil recovery is the removal of calcium and magnesiunt hardness by cation-exchange series softening. Knowing the solubility of any scale forming salts in brines at elevated temperatures is necessary for fixing the level to which the feed water must be softened. Such calcium sulfate solubility data, previously not available above 392F, were determined by the authors in a flow equilibrium apparatus mud will be reported elsewhere. These data were used to develop a method for predicting the solubility of anhydrite in hot water or steam droplets for saturated steam pressures as high as 2,000 psig (637F). (The calcium sulfate solubility product is represented by a combination of two factors, one reflecting the effects of ionic strength and the other accounting for the effects of complex ion formation in either calcium-magnesium-rich or sulfate-rich brines.) The method is applied to a calcium-magnesium-rich brine If moderately high salinity from a pilot hot-water flood, I nd to several sulfate-rich, low-salinity feed waters and l lowdown (cooled steam droplets) samples from steam s ak operations. The predicted calcium hardness levels corresponding to the calcium sulfate solubilities agreed reasonably well with the results of laboratory solubility determinations run on the field samples. Further testing of the method is needed for brines of other composition classes. Existing field cation exchange softeners in the cases tested are performing adequately since all the samples were found to be undersaturated with respect to calcium sulfate at their operating temperatures. Introduction Prevention of scaling caused by precipitation of calcium sulfate (anhydrite) is of considerable concern in connection with thermal recovery processes using wet steam or hot water. To avoid anhydrite precipitation in a heated system, an engineer must keep the product of the calcium and sulfate concentrations in the water or steam droplets below the value of the solubility product of anhydrite for the temperature and brine composition in question. Usually it is most practical to keep the concentration product lower than the solubility product by keeping calcium low in the presence of high sulfate, or by keeping sulfate low in the presence of high calcium. This can be done by a choice of combinations of natural waters and water treatment processes (such as series cation exchange softening to remove calcium). Until recently, few anhydrite solubility data, particularly for solutions containing other salts, were available for temperatures above 392F (211 psig steam); Marshall, Slusher and Jones' studied the CaS0,-NaCI-H,O system up to 392F and surveyed the work of previous investigators. To model natural brines, one needs to study the solubility of anhydrite in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and their mixtures. Since steam pressures as high as 2,000 psig (637F) may be involved in thermal oil recovery projects, a solubility study was conducted between 482 and 617F.' Discussed in this paper is the application of these data to the prediction of anhydrite precipitation in some practical steam soak and hot-water injection projects. Any simple method for predicting the solubility of an inorganic compound over a wide range of temperatures and solution compositions must be based on some assumptions, and therefore must yield approximate results. On the one hand, natural brines contain too many ionic species for all to be included in a simple scheme; on the other hand, there is no adequate theoretical basis for the exact prediction of solubility in even simple solutions of mixed electrolytes. However, it is possible at a given temperature to base a reasonable prediction scheme on two phenomena:'-' the increase in solubility with increasing total concentrations of all ions (as measured by the ionic strength; see the Appendix), and an increase due to formation of cornplexes between calcium ions and sulfate ions and between sulfate and magnesium ions. Stiff and Davis' developed such a scheme for predicting the solubility of gypsum (CaSO, ¦ 2H,O) in brines at temperatures u~ to 212F. However, for the higher temperaturei of present interest, the stable solid phase is anhydrite (CaSO,). This study involves a two-part method for predicting anhydrite solubility products. First, one predicts a value K, for a given ionic strength I and a given temperature T corresponding to mo./msr, = 1 from data of the CaS0,-NaCI-H,O system. Second, one determines a group of factors F .= F(Ca) • F(Mg) • F(SO,), where the individual factors account for increases in the solubility product due to complex formation by high concentrations, respectively, of calcium, magnesium and sulfate.
