"Abstract - Shallow submarine hydrothermal fluids from Paleohori Bay off the Greek Island of Milos have been investigated in detail. The extensive gas and warm (max. 93°C) water vents are enriched in major components such as C1-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4 +, K+, Sr2+, H2S and CH4 and depleted in Mg2+, O2 and SO4 2- relative to ambient seawater. Based on zero-Mg calculations, it is deduced that the submarine vent fluids are related to the geothermal reservoir beneath Milos which has a similar chemical composition. Fluid samples from each vent in Paleohori Bay represent a mixture of hydrothermal end-member fluids derived from the upper and deeper geothermal reservoir systems of Milos, a mantle-derived source, a high-chloride fluid resulting from phase separation of geo thermal fluids and a steam-heated CO2-rich meteoric water. Résumé - À l’île de Milos dans la mer d’Égée, des fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux en eau profonde ont été récherchés en détail près de la baie de Paleohori. Les larges émanations de gaz et d’eau chaude (temperature maximale: 93°C) sont enrichies en constituants principaux tels que de Cl-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4+, K+, Si, Sr2+, H2S et CH4 et appauvries en Mg2+, O2, SO4 2- comparé à l’eau de mer environnante. Selon le calcul du zéro-Mg, nous en déduisons que les fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux sont dérivés du réservoir géothermal sous l’île de Milos car leur composition chimique est la même. Les prélèvements des fluides de chaque source hydrothermale représentent un mélange de fluides hydrothermaux dérivés des réservoirs géothermaux supérieur et inférieur, d’une source dérivée du manteau, d’un fluide très enrichi en chlorure produit par la séparation des phases et de l’eau météorique enrichie en CO2 et chauffée par la vapeur."

Fully grouted cable bolts have been used in underground mining industry for more than 40 years and are becoming more and more popular especially when severe geological conditions are encountered, such as high stresses and large cross-section excavations. The axial performance of cable bolts are mainly relied on the load transfer process between the cables themselves and surrounding rock masses via grout annulus. Therefore, the selected grouts play a significant role in determining the reinforcement quality for underground openings. In order to better understand the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout, which is one type of cementitious grouts commonly used in Australian underground coalmines, plenty of unconfined compressive tests are conducted on it. Following diverse standards, two different kinds of samples are prepared and tested with the w/c ratio ranging from 0.35 to 0.45. During the test important mechanical properties including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratios and so forth are recorded. Based on experimental results, the effect of w/c ratio on the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout is studied. Beyond that, influences of sample size on the failure mode, peak strength as well as residual strength of this kind of grout are summarised and analysed.CITATION:Chen, J, Hagan, P C and Saydam, S, 2014. Samples of coal from six beds in the Roslyn-Cle Elum field of Washington were subjected to float-and-sink tests to determine their amenability to the production of high-ash boiler fuel for on-site power generation. Grindability tests and analyses of ash were made. All of the coals would require some degree of cleaning to insure a product of 25 percent ash. With two of the coals the entire size range would have to be washed. With the other four, it would suffice to clean only the coarse coal and bypass the raw fines.

"AbstractThe Bureau of Mines, Ottawa, in conjunction with Eldorado Mining and Refining (1944), Limited, has developed an automatic concentrator for uranium ores.A brief review of radioactivity is given which shows the present limitations for obtaining •good results by electronic concentration. The ores after being mined, or at any other stage of a concentrating process, can be analysed for the uranium dissemination and from these results the possibility of an economical concentration can be estimated.The electronic and mechanical parts of the equipment are described. Difficulties in the operation's, and means by which they have •been and are •being overcome, are discussed. The capacity of the units, the results obtained, the man-power required, and other pertinent data are presented. Simple control analysis on the percent U3O8 has been developed.Research is continuing along lines to develop a more completely automatic unit using a scintillation detector, and applying a few new ideas and some devices that have been developed in colour sorting.IntroductionIt is well known how important the Geiger counter is in the field of exploration for uranium. It was in late 1946 that Dr. C. Lapointe, of the Bureau of Mines, Ottawa, first started work on an automatic picking unit to concentrate uranium ores. He used the principle that if a number of pieces of unknown ore, some of which contained uranium, were individually brought up close to a Geiger-Müller tube, then the pieces containing uranium could •be easily picked out due to their activity. Since then a good deal of work has been done by the Bureau of Mines in conjunction with Eldorado Mining and • Refining (1944), Limited, to develop an electronic concentrator."

Definite progress has been made in accident prevention in Illinois during the past few years; the State Department of Mines and Minerals is receiving excellent cooperation from coal companies and employees, the companies are making greater effort to maintain their mines in good condi- tion, and the employees are eliminating more unsafe practices. As a result, some coal companies have made commendable safety records that prove that coal can be mined with a comparatively low accident rate. However, there is need for further improvement, as the accident rate of the State as a whole is much higher than it should be. During the 55-year period 1882-1936, in- clusive, reports of the State Department of Mines and Minerals show a total of 7,005 (an average of 127.36 per year) men killed in and around the coal mines. Of this number, 6,425 (91.7 percent) were killed underground, 346 (4.9 percent) in the shaft, and 234 (3.3 percent) on the surface. Of the fatalities underground, 3,300 (51.3 percent) were killed by falls of roof, sides, or face coal, 1,167 (18.1 percent) by haulage, 639 (9.9 percent) by handling explosives, 579 (9 percent) by explosions, 151 (2.3 percent) by electricity, and 589 (9.1 percent) by other means. Of the fatalities in the shaft, 171 men (46.5 percent) were killed by falling down the shaft, 14 (41.6 percent) by the cage, and 31 (8.9 percent) otherwise. On the surface, 113 (48.2 percent) of the fatalities were due to railroad cars, 51 (21.7 percent) to machinery, and 70 (29.9 percent) to other causes. The fact that 7,005 lives (an average of 127.36 per year) were lost during 1882-1936 is sufficient evidence that in the past too little interest has been taken in safety by either the management or workers. A realization of this deplorable loss of life should act as an incentive to the industry to make greater effort to prevent accidents in the future. After an accident occurs, the facts pertaining to it become history, and anything that may be done afterward cannot change in any way the damage that has already been done, such as loss of life, personal injury, and destruction of property. The main benefit that can be derived from an acci- dent is that suitable procedure may be adopted and some lesson may be learned to aid in preventing a similar accident in the future. "The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) has been developed by Search Minerals to extract nickel and cobalt VALUES (from nickel laterite ores (saprolites) and Caron plant residues. The technology consists of sulfuric acid atmospheric leaching of the ores or residues followed by neutralization and recovery of nickel and cobalt. The acid addition is carefully controlled to maximize nickel and cobalt extraction while minimizing overall consumption of acid by various gangue reactions. The final recovery processes can be tailored for maximum economic benefit. The use of resin-in-pulp processing is advocated as the most cost effective method for initial recovery of nickel and cobalt from lower grade materials. INTRODUCTIONCommercial processes for laterite ore treatment vary according to laterite type and local conditions. The two general categories of laterite ore are saprolites and limonites.Saprolites are generally treated by pyrometallurgical processes for reduction of nickel to matte or ferro nickel alloys. The high cost of drying, chemical reduction and electric furnace smelting requires that the saprolite grade for economic processing is of the order of 1.8% nickel or higher. There are of course large amounts of saprolite that fall below this “cut-off” grade that are not currently economic.Limonites can be treated by the Caron Process which involves drying of the ore, a reduction roast of the whole ore to reduce nickel and cobalt (and some iron) to the metallic state followed by ammonium – ammonium carbonate solution to leach nickel and cobalt. Nickel and cobalt recovery are low (70-85% for Ni and 20-50% for Co). The Caron plant tailings therefore contain high levels of unrecovered nickel and cobalt. Relatively few plants have used the Caron Process and new installations are not anticipated due to the high energy cost of drying and reduction roasting. Nevertheless, plants in Brazil (Niquelandia), Australia (Yabulu) and Cuba continue to operate.The high pressure acid leach (HPAL) process was pioneered at Moa Bay in Cuba in the 1960’s in the treatment of limonites. In the 1990’s the HPAL process was touted to revolutionize the nickel industry with low capital and operating costs for new installations. Murrin Murrin, Cawse and Bulong in Australia were started and in each case the technical difficulties of operating at extreme temperature and pressure conditions and the challenges in “ramping up” a complex hydrometallurgical facility conspired to cause these plants to fail economically. At present, Cawse and Bulong are closed and Murrin Murrin continues to operate after undergoing a financial restructuring."

The Los Bronces porphyry copper deposit is located in the high Andes of Central Chile. Ore is mined from several tourmaline breccias and from an earlier porphyry. After years of experience in the geostatistical estimation of reserves in different zones of the ore body, we believe that success lies in considering the evaluation as an integrated process beginning with the analyses of the drilling density and sampling methodology, ending with the critically important reconciliation between the estimated and the actually extracted ore, in general, when errors or differences occur, focus is centered in the calculation stages of geostatistics. However, this paper demonstrates that all the evaluation stages are equally important and require the direct and continuous geologic input to ensure the best possible estimate within the frame of the geologic constraints.

Of the treatment of the slime-pulp of gold- and silver-ores by cyanidation, agitation is an essential part. When prepared for treatment, this pulp, consisting of ore reduced to such fineness that approximately 80 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen, is mixed with a certain proportion of water, carrying in solution the cluantity of cyanide (KCN) and other chemicals required. The water-constituent of the pulp thus prepared usually ranges from 1 to 2 parts by weight to 1 of the dry ore. Thus constituted, the pulp is charged into treatment-tanks, the shape and capacity of which vary, according to the quantity of pulp to be treated daily and the method of agitation to be employed. Tanks have no other function in a cyanide,plant than that of being economical and corlvellient containers or receptacles for holding the pulp, solutiou, or water used in the operations. It is by agitation that the solids in the pulp charged into the tanks are kept in suspension in, and mixed with, the solution in the proper proportions required for the treatment. If the proper mixture of solution to dolids be determined to be 2 to 1 by weight (which is, approximately, 5 to 1 by volume), this proportion should be maintained in every part of the charge; that is, each solid particle of the pulp, whether it be of' 180- or 400-mesh size, should be surrounded by five times its own volume of solution throughout the whole period of treatment. The reason is, that the amount of chemicals ascertaiued to be necessary for dissolving the gold and silver contained in the solids, is held in uniform solution in the water-constituent of the pulp, and, therefore, the determined proportions of solution and solids must be maintained at all times during treat-

Hard rock TBMs are very often open machine layouts, with just a part roof shield over the front of the machine. The whole system is designed for fast face advance and the economy of the project often depends entirely on the rate of advance. Typically, hard rock conditions will demonstrate stable and good ground for a major part of the tunnel. However, short sections of crushed shear zones with clay and gouge material may cause serious time delays. Spiling rock bolting has been proven to be very efficient under such circumstances, provided the fully grouted rebar bolts can be placed in a controlled and practical manner.Environmental restrictions are becoming more and more a part of tunnel excavation projects. Even hard rock TBM tunnelling may require a strict ground water control, because of consequences on the ground surface from lowering the ground water level. Such consequences may be surface settlement, negative influence on ground water resources or damage to vegetation.Pressure injection ahead of the advancing tunnel face (in this paper named pre-injection), using microfine cement and chemical grouts, is today a proven technology. As examples can be mentioned (Garshol, 1997) about 100 km of pre-injected tunnels below Oslo City and about the same length of subsea tunnelling elsewhere in Norway. Examples from other parts of the world are also available, like below Stockholm, Sweden, the Inland Feeder project and Hollywood Metro both in Southern California.To take advantage of spiling rockbolts and pre-injection, it is an obvious prerequisite to be able to drill the necessary boreholes in the right positions and at the correct angle. In drill and blast excavation this is simple, but in TBM projects it has repeatedly turned out to be difficult. More than once owners have accepted bids containing reassurance from the contractor that the drilling method will be sorted out later. Experience shows that if ælaterÆ means after start of the TBM operation, it is often too late.

The Chelopech Copper/Gold Mine, located in west-central Bulgaria, has been in operation since 1953 producing a low-grade copper/gold concentrate containing up to six percent arsenic by weight. The penalties and restrictions imposed on smelting this concentrate, have seen the past operators of the mine strive to find a balance between achieving acceptable metal returns from the smelters and installing novel or unproven technologies in the face of changing political and economic climates. This paper documents the colourful history of the concentrate processing alternatives that have been investigated and implemented over the 45 year life of the Chelopech Mine, culminating in the high pressure oxidation option that is now the focus of a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) presently being undertaken by GRD Minproc Limited. The fundamental chemistry of the preceding alternatives is outlined followed by a discussion as to why each was ultimately not employed. A detailed description of the technology proposed in the DFS is given including: pressure oxidation, arsenic fixation, SX/EW copper recovery, CIL gold recovery and AVR/SART cyanide/copper recovery processes. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Project was established in 1975 by the Department of Energy (DOE) under Public Law 193 to develop the necessary technology for safe disposal of radioactive wastes from the defense programs of the U.S. The technology development involves extensive theoretical, numerical, and laboratory programs, as well as construction of the WIPP facility in southeastern New Mexico for in situ testing and waste storage demonstration. If after the demonstration, the facility is found to comply with regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency, then the facility will become a repository for Transuranic (TRU) waste. The underground portion of the facility is 655 m beneath the ground surface in massive natural salt deposits of the Salado formation, as shown in Figure 1.

Measurement while drilling (MWD) techniques can provide a useful tool to aid drill and blast engineers in open cut mining. By avoiding time consuming tasks such as scan-lines and rock sample collection for laboratory tests, MWD techniques can not only save time but also improve the reliability of the blast design by providing the drill and blast engineer with the information specially tailored for use. While most mines use a standard blast pattern and charge per blasthole, based on a single rock factor for the entire bench or blast region, information derived from the MWD parameters can improve the blast design by providing more accurate rock properties for each individual blasthole. From this, decisions can be made on the most appropriate type and amount of explosive charge to place in a per blasthole or to optimise the inter-hole timing detonation time of different decks and blastholes. Where real-time calculations are feasible, the system could extend the present blast design even be used to determine the placement of subsequent holes towards a more appropriate blasthole pattern design like asymmetrical blasting.

This paper discusses the utilization of chromium slag, which presently has no useful application in China, as a resource. The following research has been done in this paper: (1) After determining the composition and properties of chro- miumresiduewedecidedtotesttheideaofusingchromiumslagasacomponentin synthetic MgAl O spinel material. (2) Through experiments on sintering and 2 4 electric melting of refractory materials we determined the best conditions for a practical process. (3) We compared the performance of the refractory material obtained with traditional spinel refractory materials and confirmed the excellent performance ofoursystem. Bubbles play a vital role in flotation, and their properties directly affect the flotation performance. Xanthates are one of the major collectors used in sulphide mineral flotation. It is often believed that their main function is to render the desired mineral surface hydrophobic, which is essential for the mineral particles to attach to air bubbles. This paper takes a systematic approach to assess the influence of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) at the air–liquid phase and its interaction with the frother in the concentration of range 10–5×104 ppm. Bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation cell using a photographic technique and the stability of bubbles was quantified in terms of coalescence time -, the time required for a bubble pair produced at adjacent capillaries to merge into a single bubble. Bubble size reduction of up to 26% was observed with increasing PAX concentration in the cell. The bubble coalescence experiments using PAX only showed that the bubbles coalesced quickly at lower concentrations (10–50 ppm), but they stayed extremely stable at higher concentrations (1×102–1×104 ppm). Further experiments were carried out where the concentration of PAX was fixed at 1 ppm and 4- Methyl-2-pentanol (MIBC) concentration was varied. The synergetic action of PAX and MIBC significantly improved the stability of bubbles in the mixed system, and is even compatible with a stronger frother. The results strongly suggest that the role of PAX at the air–liquid phase should be considered in the practice of sulphide flotation. Keywords: Bubble size, bubble coalescence, PAX, bubble stability

It is standard practice in geotechnical studies for mine design to drill a series of inclined oriented boreholes into the proposed pit walls. However, this investigation tool is often used without an adequate understanding of the inherent shortcomings in the method and the many potential sources of error. Of the more commonly used orientation methods in Australia the clay imprint technique is probably the most reliable. Contoured stereographic plots of oriented core data are frequently characterised by diverse pole distributions and low concentration maximums compared with line mapping data. Common sources of error producing these poor results are misinterpretation of orientation marks or imprints, inaccurate marking of the reference line, errors in the structural measurement of the defects, lack of continuity information and blind zones sub-parallel to the borehole direction which correction methods frequently do not fix. Line mapping is the preferred method of structural data collection due to the lower overall cost, availability of continuity information and higher accuracy. The projectability of field mapping data to final wall positions can be assessed with a good understanding of the regional geology and local structural patterns. Where field mapping is not possible due to a thick regolith cover, core orientation should be carried out by experienced personnel to minimise the many potential errors.A series of case studies are presented which compare oriented core with mapping and highlight the inherent problems with the technique.

This paper deals with the geology of the Smallwood mine in relation to its influence on mining and milling operations. Structure within the orebody, and variations in ore grade and material types, will be described and associated with the various drilling, blasting and milling operations. The orientation of planes of weakness, either bedding or jointing planes, and contacts between extremes in material types influence the size of the broken material. Generally speaking, variations in grinding rates and recovery can be associated with stratigraphic sequence and metamorphism.

BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

Recently, a new hybrid geopolymer/biopolymer (GP/BP) cementitious material was developed for improving the performance of pumpable roof supports in underground mines. This study demonstrates the application of the hybrid GP/BP cementitious material and validates its effectiveness in full-scale. In this regard, eight (8) full-size (0.61 m diameter and 1.52 m height) cribs were produced in collaboration with Minova International Ltd and tested at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) Laboratory. These full-size cribs were produced with different material configurations to evaluate the effect of water to solid (W/S) ratio, Portland cement (PC) content, and BP dosage. The results demonstrated and validated the effectiveness of the hybrid GP/BP cementitious material in increasing the peak and residual bearing capacities of pumpable cribs and eliminating the issue of deterioration when exposed to air compared with the conventional Portland cement/fly ash (PC/FA) cementitious material currently used in practice. On average, the peak uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and the highest residual UCS after peak of the full-size cribs produced from the hybrid GP/BP cementitious material are 1.90 and 1.33 times of those of the PC/FA-based full-size cribs by one company and 2.32 and 1.66 times of those of the PC/FA based full-size cribs by the other company, respectively.

Since the development of the ICC-ES AC358 acceptance criteria, the use of helical piles as deep foundation solutions has grown in popularity and expansion of desired applications. With this has come a desire to use larger diameter shafts to support larger loads. Helical piles employ a unique method to predict performance by correlating the final installation torque to the ultimate load carrying capacity for both tension and compressive loads. This capacity-to-torque factor is commonly denoted as the ‘Kt’ factor. Previous publications from multiple authors have estimated the capacity-to-torque relationship both empirically and theoretically for helical piles.  Most of these prior studies focused on smaller shaft diameters from 1.5-inch square to 3.5-inch round.  Current trends have motivated the helical pile industry to utilize larger diameter pile shafts than are not well represented by the prior publications, including AC358. This paper presents an expanded body of empirical data comprised of full-scale load test results of helical piles with diameters ranging from 1.5 inches up to 18 inches. The curve fitting methods used to develop the AC358 equation are re-examined and offers an alternative that better fits the test data. The current methodology uses a simple exponential curve with a limit of zero as pile shaft diameter increases. This implies that at some point a helical pile’s diameter would become so large that it would have zero capacity, which is illogical. Utilizing a horizontal asymptote, other than zero, in the curve fitting analysis provides a better fit to the data.  The better fit increases to the capacity-to-torque ratio for larger diameter piles on the order of 15% to 30%.  Also, presented are some key insights that the authors offer for consideration in further development of this critical relationship.

Although viscosity is known to be important in processing and handling finely ground urea, its effect has never been fully quantified. This report describes the methods used and the results obtained in the initial phases of a broad investigation of the influence of viscosity of water suspensions of minerals in flotation, thickening, filtering, and other mineral-dressing unit operations. Several types of vis-cosimeters were tested before reliable and reproducible results could be obtained on mineral suspensions. After the viscosimeter used in the research was calibrated and standardized, tests were made on six pure minerals to study the relationship of pulp density, particle size, crystallinity, and cleavage on viscosity. An orifice-type viscosimeter equipped with a mechanical stirrer gave as good results as other types and was more flexible, faster, and simpler to operate. The orifice-type viscosimeter, when calibrated and standardized with glycerin and water mixtures, proved satisfactory over a wide range of viscosities. The accuracy and reproducibility were reasonably constant between 1 centipoise and 200 centipoises, the anticipated range in common mineral-dressing unit operations.
