Direct sulphuric acid leaching of nickeliferous limonites is the process of choice to recover nickel and cobalt from equatorially located lateritic ores. These ores are rich-in-iron (-45 wt%) existing in the form of goethite enriched with nickel. The merit of this process is due to its high nickel selectivity because of simultaneous iron separation and acid regeneration. Under acid leaching conditions (-250 to 270°C) iron follows an acid dissolution-hydrolytic precipitation path yielding a very low concentration level depending on temperature and acidity of the final leach liquor. The primary precipitation product of iron is hematite which also forms as a scale on reactor internals along with co-existing aluminum. In this paper, an overview of the behaviour of iron solid products under process conditions is made. The evolution of goethite to hematite transformation, as well as the role of iron in reactor scale production, are studied using SEM/EDX characterization techniques.

"The influences of citric acid (CA) on the flotation behavior of cassiterite using styrene phosphonic acid (SPA) as the collector were studied via single mineral flotation tests, contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations in this paper. The results of single mineral flotation tests revealed under the conditions that pH=4 and the dosage of SPA 100 mg/L, the recovery of cassiterite reached 76.78%. The addition of 20 mg/L AC decreased the recovery by 12.42% at pH=4. Contact angle measurements demonstrated the adsorption of CA prior to SPA made the cassiterite more hydrophilic. The results of zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations indicated the chemisorption of C6H7O7- and C6H6O72- filled parts of the Sn site on cassiterite surface and prevented the SPA from getting adsorbed. The hydrophilic effect of AC was stronger than the hydrophobic effect of SPA and the flotation of cassiterite was crippled. INTRODUCTION Tin is an important metal which is widely used in medical instruments, marine engineering materials, electronic and electrical devices, welding, weapon manufacturing and organotin compounds industries (Angadi et al., 2015). Cassiterite is the only mineral from which the tin can be extracted, thus it is of great importance to efficiently exploit the cassiterite mineral. Flotation is an indispensable method for the recovery of cassiterite (Li et al., 2015). However, cassiterite is usually in association with many other gangue minerals which are of similar floatability, such as quartz, calcite, fluorite, iron oxide, wolframite, scheelite and tourmaline (Sreevinas, 1997). So some modifiers are necessary in the cassiterite flotation process. The amounts of the modifiers used in the flotation must be judicious and the overmuch modifiers may cripple the recovery of cassiterite (Parsonage et al., 1987). Nevertheless, the research about the effects of the modifiers on the flotation behavior of cassiterite has been rarely reported. JOHN HAMRIC: Our next speakers are Richard Ghent, manager of environmental health and safety for CF Industries, Hardee Phosphate Complex, in Wauchula, Florida. Richard has 20 years' experience with environmental health and safety affairs. He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina. With him is Daniel Warnock, who is supervisor of safety and training also at the Hardee Phosphate Complex. Daniel's experience is in safety programs and electrical training. Their presentation is "Regulations Versus Management Practice." RICHARD GHENT: Written procedures give structure to safety programs. At their best, they are brief and understandable to facility personnel and clearly identify roles and responsibilities. At worst, they attempt to recite the entire regulation they are intended to address. Some regulations, such as OHSA's Hazard Communication Standard, require employers to develop, implement, and maintain a written program. As written programs and procedures are developed, some basic questions arise: Is the program designed to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements or does management expect the program to go beyond compliance to some higher level of performance? Management may have difficulty in measuring and communicating performance expectations in safety. A facility with 4 million safe work hours does not suddenly become unsafe the day their safety record is broken. Generally, management expects safety programs to meet regulatory requirements and to protect the employer from enforcement actions and fines from regulatory agencies. Management also expects that safety programs will result in a safer work environment with fewer incidents, accidents, and near misses. But it is difficult to know when a safety program has succeeded. If the program is expected to go beyond compliance, what other standards should be included (e.g., ANSI standards, company management practices, lessons learned from inspections and audits, recommendations from safety committees, etc.) in the

The Bureau of Mines studied toxic products produced by burning eight fire-resistant mines conveyor belts, a brattice cloth, and an electrical cable insulation obtained from laboratory-scale burning experiments under various air-flow conditions. Generally, CO product concentrations for most materials were noticeably higher then the NO2 and HC1 levels that were measured; also, no phosgene was detected. However, several of the fire-resistant belt samples yielded HC1 concentrations that were above the reported lethal level for 1/2 to 1-hour exposures, although these data were limited to flow conditions where air dilution effects were small; the belt materials that showed this behavior included samples of polyvinyl chloride, styrene butadiene, styrene butadiene blends, and a British neoprene which yielded the greatest amount of toxic vapor. In addition, some results are presented on the phosphoric acid concentrations that may be produced from the decomposition of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate when dispersed on a burning coalbed.

"The Scully Mine deposit lies within the group of metasediments that together comprise the rocks of the Labrador Trough. The ore itself still retains the bedding characteristics of the parent rocks and on this basis has been divided into three main members, namely: Upper, Middle and Lower. The Upper and Lower both show many of the bedding characteristics of the cherty taconites of the northern U.S.A.; the Middle member is a coarse-grained friable specularite rock. The ore minerals are hematite (normally present in the specular variety) and magnetite, although the latter rarely occurs in concentrations greater than 20 per cent. Gangue minerals are quartz and the hydrated iron oxides. Manganese oxides also occur as accessory minerals. The outcrop area of the orebody is in excess of 2 square miles, displaying a complex pattern of faulting and folding, which has been formed as a result of at least two orogenic periods."

Aluminum alloys in particular, have certain limitations when subjected to welding process. This is mainly present because aluminum alloys have high thermal conductivity, high contraction in solidification and high hydrogen solubility. Taking this into account, the FSW process has great potential for this application, since it is autogenous, held without metal melting and without the use of slags or shielding gases. From this concept, the aim of this study is to evaluate the joining of thin sheets of aluminum alloy 3105 H26 with 0.7 mm of thickness. To performing of the tests, some parameters were analyzed, such as: tool penetration in the sheets, attack angle, the type of welding tool and penetration control mode (position or force). The results indicated that the force control mode is most suitable for thin sheets, and the transient state at the beginning of welding was the most critical part to control the welding quality.

Over the past twenty years, steelmakers have introduced improved practices for reducing the inclusion content of steels. The success of these practice changes can be monitored in a variety of ways. Chemical analysis of the bulk sulphur and oxygen contents provides a relatively simple means to assess the impact of these changes. However, microscopical test methods are still needed to assess the nature of the inclusions present. Traditional chartbased measurement methods have wide acceptability, and their data are well understood by both purchaser and producer for heat acceptance purposes. However, these methods do have inherent weaknesses which limit their usefulness for quality control, SPC, and database applications. Image analysis-based chart measurements are an improvement over manually generated chart ratings, but the data still do not lend themselves to databases and statistical comparisons. ASTM Committee E-4 on Metallography has developed a stereologicallybased image analysis standard test method, E 1245, which provides the necessary data in a form which is easily databased and analyzed statistically. This paper describes E 1245 and shows how data from different heats and melting practices can be compared statistically to ascertain valid test differences.

This paper will cover the problems confronting an owner when planning and estimating the cost of a proposed tunnel. Three factors are known: the length, size and the time allocated for the completion of the work. In general the difficulties encountered when driving a tunnel in California are the greatest at the lower elevations and in the Coast Range and are minimal in the Sierra Nevada mountains particularly in granitic formation. The writer will discuss the experience gained from observing the driving of about 120 miles of tunnel in California as well as the repairs of some tunnels. SIZE OF TUNNELS It is known that a small tunnel may be more costly to drive than one of somewhat larger dimensions. This fact was found to be true when a tunnel about 4,000 feet long was constructed to eliminate 7 miles of canal. The formation was lava so it was anticipated the ground would be self supporting because of the small bore. Actually the tunnel required support for most of its length and working conditions were poor. It became apparent that a larger size could have been driven at no additional cost and probably in less time. DOES it pay to do really good work? Quite likely the practical millman will answer that it does not. The preparation of ores for market is primarily a business enterprise, and by and large the individual operator does not bother his head about squandering our national resources or making easier the job of the smelterman. Having accepted such ore as he may get fro111 the mine, his job is to make the best possible showing with his mill fro111 the standpoint of financial return. His success is measured in dollars and cents, and he has no rightful reason to expect more than scant acknowledgment of any other achievements from the stock- holders of his company who in the last analysis are his employers.

THE ease and promptness with which the public as a whole becomes accustomed to and takes advantage of the work of the engineer, using the term in a broad sense, is almost startling. Surprise at, and fear of radical innovations in transportation and private service quickly give way to blasé indifference, followed instantly by all manner of criticism that these things are not better constructed and managed. Does the street car stop a few minutes on a switch?-summon the State Commission. Is the Overland Express fifteen minutes late on a three thousand mile run?-Congress is memorialized to make the great railroad companies attend to their business. Does central not respond instantly when we take down the telephone receiver?-anathema!! Do the electric lights go out for a minute or so?-the darkness is illuminated by caustic sarcasm and other kinds of spoken English consigning all engineering and engineers to perdition; everyone apparently forgetting how steep the hills were before the days of street cars, how far away San Francisco was before the days of the locomotive, the telegraph and telephone, and how difficult it must have been to study by the light of a tallow candle.

Tectonic activity in northern New Mexico during late Oligocene and early Miocene time presaged events which led to the development of molybdenite deposits at Questa. East-northeast directed crustal extension produced north-northwest striking tensional fracture systems paralleling the early Rio Grande rift. A sequence of Oligocene andesite flows and breccias is overlain by a thick early Miocene rhyolite ash-flow tuff. Eruption of the tuff initiated collapse of the Questa cauldron: the south margin of which occurs as an east-northeast striking, north-dipping structurally weak zone. Continued east-northeast post-cauldron extension permitted the high level emplacement of granite stocks with coeval rotational deformation of fault blocks composed of cauldron fill and [ ] floor. The stocks occupy north-northwest fracture zones in the south margin of the cauldron, and porphyry dikes occupy east- northeast striking faults that define the south margin. These two fracture systems have played a dominant role in localizing the intrusive porphyries and associated mineral deposits at Questa. A molybdenite-bearing breccia matrix and related stockwork mineralization generally occur within volcanic rocks. Mineral deposits are spatially related to fault zones and the upper con- tact of their source intrusives. Deposits are localized in fault zones up to several thousand feet long and 100 to 500 feet in diameter. Magmatic-hydrothermal solutions from the source aplite porphyries have produced potash metasomatic alteration which is strongly centered on the mineral and ore zones. Alteration in ore is represented by orthoclase, quartz and secondary biotite. This pattern grades into secondary biotite and propylitic zones forming successively weaker alteration assemblages away from ore. Younger phyllic and argillic assemblages are particularly widespread only where strong north-northwest extensional fracture zones cross the south cauldron margin.

NO matter what position we hold, workman, foreman, superintendent, manager, president, or what not, let us fail to give or to make good products, then see how quickly we'll be called to account for- our work by the buying public. The waves of progress taught us that millions were wasted in unnecessary strikes-we also learned that many losses were due to neglect on the part of manufacturers to give the same consideration and attention to the human element of their factory as they gave to their machinery. The employees learned also that the employer was their agent who found purchasers for the product of their labor. So between the two we learned that many years of labor were needed in order for a worker to recover his wasted savings, or for the manu¬facturer to replenish his loss. Treat 'em rough, and tell 'em nothing, was not very far from the true relationship between management and employees in manufacturing plants in the early days. Today just exactly the opposite views are held by executives whose function is the handling of employees. Men today want to know what it is all about. They are intelligent enough to comprehend the facts, and to use them constructively, and it is good business to give them the information.

Home appliance recycling law was put into force in April 2001 in Japan. Specified kinds of home appliances, such as air conditioners, television sets, refrigerators and washing machines, should be recycled according to the law. Mitsubishi Materials Corporation (MMC) in cooperation with home appliance manufacturers is operating five home appliance recycling plants in Japan. MMC established complete treatment system of recyclable materials generating from home appliance recycling plants, which is formed by unique collaboration among home appliance recycling plants, copper smelter and refinery, and cement plants. Recyclable materials containing copper and precious metals are only handled and treated within the MMC group. By using this lock-in system, safe treatment and traceability of materials are guaranteed as 100% materials recycle.

This report is the first of a series dealing with the oil-shale reserves of the Green River formation in the Rocky Mountain Region. The known oil-shale reserves of northwestern Colorado at present considered to have economic value apparently are confined to the Piceanco Creek basin between the Colorado and White Rivers. The number of sampled sections is small, but there can be little doubt that the Piceance Creek basin is a potential source of enormous quantities of liquid fuels and the related byproducts obtained from oil-shale processing. The partly blocked and inferred oil-shale reserves of 25-gallon-a-ton shale are estimated to have an oil yield of 125 billion barrels and the reserves of 15-gallon-a-ton shale are estimated to have an oil yield of 494 billion barrels. The number of available sampled sections is inadequate for making firm estimates.

This paper describing the mining methods employed and setting forth prevailing, costs at the property, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with properties in various mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Vipond mine is a gold property located at Timmins, Ontario, Canada, and operated by the Vipond Consolidated Mines (Ltd.). For the past fiscal year (ended July 31. 1930) ore was mined and milled at the rate of 310 tons per day, and the value of the bullion produced was $896,397.61.

The Bureau of Mines substantially reduced shale degradation in a coal mine by two spray coat applications of a water-base epoxy sealant. More than 12,700 square feet of passageways were treated, and in 18 months only one failure occurred. This failure was due to improper spray application, Material costs averaged 13 cents per square foot, and labor costs were 7 cents per square foot. Labor included moving all materials into the mine, the setup time for each of the areas coated, and application of coatings.

This report contains information on the cells or containers used to hold a known small depth (usually 1 mm. or less) of the dust-containing liquid from impinger, 5/6/ filter-paper,7/ and other samples collected from the air while the particles revealed by a microscope (equipped with a 16-mm., 0.25- or 0.50-N. A. objective and ordinarily used with axial light-field illumination) are counted in order to obtain an index of the concentration of dust in the sampled air. Information is given on such subjects as the kinds of cells available, kinds used, actual depths of cells, and construction of simple, inexpensive cells.
