The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of manganese from known domestic occurrences. Eight of these deposits were found to have demonstrated resources totaling 420 million metric tons with an average grade of 10 percent contained manganese. They were found to be submarginally subeconomic. Economic evaluations of the eight deposits resulted in incentive prices ranging from $8 to almost $35 per long ton unit (22.4 pounds) of contained manganese. Comparing these prices with the current market value of $1.70 per long ton unit of manganese clearly illustrates the submarginal nature of the domestic ores analyzed. These domestic resources would probably not be developed except in the case of an extreme national emergency. Production from the eight deposits would take 3 to 6 years to develop, and the final product would be manganese ore concentrate, which could be used in the production of ferromanganese. If preproduction development began in 1981, annual production would peak in 1987 with 900,000 metric tons of recoverable manganese. Thereafter, production would see a steady decline unless additional resources were located or technologic improvements were made to allow processing of lower grade material, or unless mining and processing of ocean manganese nodules began to take place.

This paper presents a case study of the deformation-based design, construction, and performance of stone column ground improvement (GI) beneath a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall and bridge abutment with heights up to 50 feet. As part of the widening of Interstate 5 (I-5) to allow High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in Tacoma, Washington, a new approach and span over the Puyallup River will be constructed. During the soils investigation and design phase of the project, low plasticity silts (ML) inter- bedded with silty sand layers and organic silt where identified as being potentially liquefiable. Stone column ground improvement was designed using a deformation-based approach to address static settlement and seismic stability of the proposed MSE embankments. The deformation-based design of the stone columns resulted in significant savings over a limit equilibrium-based approach. This paper presents the results of sonic coring taken from the initial stone columns installed and compares these results to the real-time data acquisition reports from the stone column installations. Vibration monitoring results during stone column installation are included. Settlement monitoring at the face of the MSE wall and buried vibrating wire settlement monitoring elements are presented and compared to the original settlement predictions.

This paper discusses the potential role of underground space and tunnelling in urban planning in Australia. The paper gives examples of the infrastructure and commercial applications of underground space which have been effectively used overseas but have been slow to be considered as a part of urban planning in Australia. In particular, the paper looks at underground quarrying and underground commercial development and their potential use in the urban environment. Existing sites and potential sites for quarrying and/or commercial use have been classified using a system developed by the author. Underground quarrying may provide some solutions for planning problems involving sand and aggregate supplies, waste disposal and other uses. Commercial development involving underground excavation may be accepted if the cost of underground commercial development can be shown to be equivalent to the cost of above ground development. The paper concludes that one role of the underground construction industry is to promote tunnelling and underground space amongst architects, town planners and planning decision-makers. The Australian Underground Construction and Tunnelling Association (AUCTA) and the Australian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT) should be instrumental in actively promoting the use of underground space in society.

Mining has a record of achievement in developing and adopting new technology to facilitate the extraction of increasingly challenging resources. Certainly larger, or more capable, mining equipment has allowed mining companies to mine mineral deposits at lower unit costs; however, there has also been the advent of computerized systems that aid in the management and tracking of mining operations. Unfortunately, the latter computerized systems have not always had the success anticipated with their implementation. This paper explores the view that increased transparency of the planning and operating cycle in a mine, as provided by certain computerized systems, can result in some resistance from those whose work becomes ?exposed?. Examples are drawn from industry-leading technologies for both mine management and reconciliation that illustrate the issues and challenges that result. The adoption of appropriate change management principles is suggested as a best practice in planning and mitigating the challenges in implementing technologies which increase transparency in the mining environment.

Concerning production of low phosphorus steel critical grades at ArcelorMittal Tubarão site, bottom blowing system plays a very important role. For those systems with independently controlled tuyeres, some non-uniform bottom blowing patterns seem to be promising in improving metal-slag mixing; however, based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results of ArcelorMittal Tubarão’s post oxygen bottom blowing, this may not be generalized. Also, from industrial trials it became clear that higher the bottom blowing flow rate, the closer were the end point P to the equilibrium. Despite this result an analysis of the apparent mass transfer coefficient has shown a week correlation with the classical power stir correlation suggesting a more complex kinetic limiting step for phosphorus removal.

Additionally, to ensure success, the real-time optimization platform must be incorporated into the site’s internal process control system (Nunez, 2022). This paper provides an overview of practical lessons and best practices for autogenous (AG), semi-autogenous (SAG), and ball mill (BM) grinding. It highlights the implementation of advanced instrumentation, specifically vibration sensors on the rotating mill shell. The paper also delves into the application of advanced analytics necessary for generating new measurements that accurately represent real-time grinding activity in the mill. These Advanced Analytics Measurements (AAM) are compared with well-known grinding curves to determine the optimal grinding point. The discussion focuses on key industry opportunities using real-time mill shell vibration results to derive new correlations and optimize the grinding process.

ARTHUR JARMAN, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (communication to the Secretary*) : All designs for modern metal¬lurgical and chemical laboratories should provide each student's desk with a hood or cupboard for the removal of fumes, but I doubt the advisability of placing air-baths and similar apparatus close to the hot plate. It seems to me that unless the draft be exceptionally strong the fumes from ordinary wet assay work will corrode the iron-work of the fittings, in which case the baths would have to be removed to a general desk in order to lighten the work of the laboratory attendant. Since the laboratory described by Mr. White has been in use for two years, I should like to ask if any inconvenience has resulted from this corrosion. If not, it is certainly an important improvement to have the air-baths and similar apparatus placed -on the student's desk. The hoods described by Mr. White are supplied with a good draft by means of a fan, which gives them a great advantage over those at the metallurgical laboratory at the University, Sydney, in that no doors to the hood are needed. Each hood in the laboratory at Sydney is connected by a glazed earthenware drain-pipe with a vertical flue, 20 ft. high, having a lighted gas jet at the bottom to assist the draft. Although the draft is good, fumes of sulphuric acid cannot be drawn o$ unless the doors of the hood are lowered more than half-way. In my opinion, a fan should be used for the purpose of creating the draft, and glazed drain-tile should invariably be used for the flues because no other material possesses the same advantages. "This study investigated the psychrometric properties of ventilating air in GAL coal mines. Related measurements were done in underground openings and have been arranged as input data for computer programs prepared for ventilation network and psychrometric analysis.Results obtained from network analysis have been used for psychrometric analysis of ventilating air. Changes in heat and moisture content of air in two major path s between entry and discharge of ventilating air have been investigated. Psychrometric processes occurring in the mine were determined and are shown graphically in Figures 1 and 2. Special attention has been given to determine the changes in psychrometric properties and processes involved in the faces. Results are outlined in this paper.IntroductionThe psychrometric properties of mine air are important factors to mine productivity and efficiency. Therefore, psychrometric analysis should be made for all underground mines; any undesired situation observe d could be corrected by taking the necessary precautions.The analyses were done as a case study for GAL mines, the only mechanized lignite coal mine in Turkey. In this mine, workable reserve is about 300 million tons of coal and yearly planned production is 2.2 million tons. Production is continuing from a coal measure-bed having two coal seams with average thicknesses of 1.52 m and 1.72 m respectively. A 0.85 m shale band exists between these two seams.Two full y-mechanized faces, approximately 220 m long, usually work simultaneously. All measurements, including mine gases and air velocity, are done by sensors connected to a control room by a monitoring system.In the analysis, a line diagram is utilized to described the mine on which every junction and branch is numbered."

Introduction The manufacture of some asbestos products involves the use of asbestos in combination with water, cement and granular fillers. This type of production is often called the wet or semi-wet process and requires the use of either pressure or vacuum to eliminate the excess water in the fibrous blend so that the product may develop the proper strength during the curing stage. Asbestos - cement products available today are numerous and are a valuable contribution to the building industry. Their production in quantity depends upon the type of equipment employed, the speed at which it can be operated, and the factors involving the? blending of asbestos, cement, water, and fillers. Assuming that all mechanical troubles at a plant have been eliminated or are under control it is still advisable to study the basic properties of the raw materials used in the asbestos-cement products. The type of cement used is an important factor, but usually the manufacturer of the cement is willing to work with the asbestos development engineer and recommend the proper type to be used for the product. The source of the water should not be overlooked as a general factor involved in the production cycle. Waters containing a high percentage of contamination such as silts, humus, or soluble salts may adversely affect the setting of the cement or cause a slowing down of the production rate in the factory. Asbestos in combination with cement is an ideal material fo1 building products. It is inorganic, will not deteriorate, and can be handled by mechanical equipment with a minimum reduction of fibre length. The many physical properties peculiar to asbestos fibres should be well understood by the manufacturer. They may be briefly enumerated as follows: fibre strength, fibre composition, sliminess, length, harshness, softness, and filterability or porosity. This last named property is important and it is the purpose of this paper to present some basic studies on filtration as applied to production problems.

The properties of top slags play a very important role in secondary steelmaking. Fluxes should be chosen based on the ladle furnace (LF) slag requirements like viscosity, melting temperature, sulfide capacity, etc. CaF2 and CaO-Al2O3-based synthetic slags are the most used fluxes in secondary steelmaking to improve slag fluidity and interfacial chemical reactions. CaF2 is obsolete due to fluorine pollution and CaO-Al2O3 based slags have 40–50 wt per cent Al2O3 and 30–40 per cent CaO which is not beneficial for desulfurisation. Yet another drawback is that LF slag disintegrates into fine powder during cooling due to phase transformation C2S (2CaO.SiO2). Hence, there is a need for the development of low melting fluxes with high CaO content and the capability to prevent slag disintegration. The current work studied the effect of 0–9 wt per cent B2O3 on physico-chemical properties and characterisation of LF slags. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were carried out to identify mineralogical phases present in slag and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis was done to understand the changes in bonds of B2O3 added LF slag. The characteristic temperature of slag was determined by a hemispherical method using high-temperature microscopy. Empirical models were used to calculate viscosity, break temperature, and sulfide capacity. FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by GTT-Technologies) simulations were carried out to find the equilibrium phase fractions and percentage of liquid slag at different temperatures. New phases such as Ca11B2Si4O22 and Ca2B3O5 were formed in LF slag with B2O3 addition. Based on the results, 0.5–1.0 wt per cent B2O3 was found to be sufficient to prevent C2S-driven disintegration of LF slag. Also, the melting temperature and viscosity of LF slag were reduced by adding 3–8 wt per cent B2O3 due to the formation of BO3 planar triangular structure and low melting eutectics in slag. Liquid slag started forming at a temperature as low as 800°C when B2O3 is >6 wt per cent. It was found that the sulfide capacity, viscosity, and break temperature of the slag decreased with increasing wt per cent B2O3. Based on the analysis carried out, B2O3 can be a promising fluxing material in secondary steelmaking, for improving the desulfurisation kinetics and valourisation potential of LF slag.

Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. There has been ho single guide to stack sampling that met the needs of those who have the need to know.

The copper concentrate market is becoming increasingly unstable. In the early 1990s large concentrate stocks were built up and the glut was cleared only after treatment charges rose so sharply that 'non-traditional' custom smelter capacity, such as in Kazakhstan, could be employed, By 1994 the market had shifted and Western smelters were unable to secure enough concentrates to operate full out. The reason for these sharp swings in the market balance is that virtllally all the recent mine development has been non-integrated. With different companies developing new mine . and smelter capacity, it is inevitable that the pace of expansion in the two sectors will not be coordinated. For many years the Japanese smelters were the major buyers from the new mm-integrated mines. However, Japanese smelter capacity is unlikely to increase appreciably in the future and this stabilizing influence will be very difficult to replace. This paper will examine the likely concentrate/smelter balance over the next five years and will forecast the likely direction of? treatment charges. It will also touch on the critical variables in assessing the viability of new greenfield custom smelter capacity, such as proximity to concentrate sources, by-product sulfuric acid prices and, most importantly, tariff protection.

Let it be emphasized on behalf of the industry that coal opera- . tors, individually and collectively, have given primary consideration to the appointment of a mine or community physician who is charged with the responsibility of caring for the sick and injured. However, it too frequently happens that with the selection or appointment of the camp doctor many operators wash their hands of further responsibility toward the health and the working efficiency of their employees. The coal industry is so organized in most of the coal-producing areas that not only is the health of the individual miner an important production problem but the collective health of the entire mining community is a fundamental operating problem. This is particularly demonstrated when epidemics of communicable diseases attack entire communities, with resultant loss of life and production and general community distress. The problem and responsibility of maintaining high health standards among miners and their families should be given as much consideration as safety, economical production and efficient distribution are given in the successful operation of coal mines. Company Policy In the inauguration or administration of a medical program for a large mining operation or for an individual mine, the first question to be solved is what the company policy is to be with respect to the following factors pertinent to a medical program: 1. On what basis will the company and the employees finance the program ? 2. Should a contract doctor or a full-time doctor on salary be employed ? 3. What measure of service is to be rendered the employee and his family in return for his monthly contribution to the medical program?

To succeed in today's competitive coal market, coal companies must continuously improve production and lower cost. However, the coal industry's historical management practices must change to remain viable? The practices of the current day efficient coal mine manager are reviewed and examined using W. Edwards Deming's definition of management. The statistical tools, including Pareto Charts, Control Charts and Scatter Diagrams, which identify the problems management must approach differently to increase productivity at a coal mine, are discussed.

Intermittent exposures to heat, and the retention of heat acclimatization by N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), R. KOK, M.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor), P. L. jOOSTE, M.Sc. (Stell.) (Visitor) Twenty-one heat acclimatized subjects were assessed for the degree of acclimatization attained with respect to heart rate, rectal temperature, and sweat rate during a standard four-hour heat-stress test. Thereafter, they were put on light duties in cool environm ents for four weeks, except for four hours of exposure to heat every seventh day. Their state of heat acclimatization was again assessed two days after the final week's exposure. Although heart rates and body temperatures showed significant increases over the initial values, no differences were observed in sweat rates and, in general, the subjects were rated as still adequately acclimatized to heat.

Large diameter raise boring is a common raise excavation method in the Australian mining industry. Geotechnical investigations were conducted on several large diameter raise bore projects at Gwalia Mine to assess the potential for instability and potential back-reaming problems. A thorough geotechnical analysis and subsequent back-analysis was conducted on a vent raise excavated at 5.5 m diameter and 810 m length.The geotechnical investigation for the vent raise included collection of data from an acoustic televiewer survey that was conducted on the pilot hole. The survey results provided structural data and an insight into the effects of stress on the pilot hole. Structural analysis was conducted using a combination of information obtained from the acoustic televiewer survey and geotechnical logs of the diamond drill core drilled close to the site.Further information was collected from drillers’ plods from pilot hole drilling and back-reaming to conduct a back-analysis of the completed shaft, and this was compared with the structural analysis.The key finding from this review was that the acoustic televiewer survey of the pilot hole accurately identified locations with blocky conditions. This is an important supplement to the information available from the main geotechnical investigation hole, as this was offset from the shaft location over most of its path.CITATION:Stephenson, R M and Sandy, M P, 2014. AS most of you probably know, Australia has had many strikes. The two places that had the worst reputation were the Broken Hill mines and Port Pirie, where the smelter was located. About four or five years ago, the smelter changed hands. The new proprietors - immediately endeavored to get on better terms with the men and made such progress in that respect that, the men came to them and said, "There is no use giving us any more money. You have just raised our pay one- bob a day, but the store-keeper and the boarding-house keeper have raised their prices. The boarding housekeeper raised our board three bob a week and the storekeeper took the rest of it and we are no better off." Learning that what the men needed most was firewood wood the company bought the wood on a tract of ground across Spencer's Gulf and- sent men over to cut it. The wood was brought to the works and given to a man to cut up. He thought he had an easy job and loafed, but when the committee representing the men discovered that his loafing added to the cost of 'the wood, it promptly disciplined him and made -him work as he had never worked before. The next question that arose was the distribution of the wood. The committee got bids from several cartmen whose prices varied from about two to five shillings. It gave the work to the next to the lowest bidder. The fact that if delivering the wood cost more, the user would have to pay for it, was an entirely new idea to the men.

"IntroductionThe purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the Lynn Lake nickel area of northern Manitoba. The geology of the area will not be discussed in great detail, nor will the mining op; rations presently being conducted. Both subjects will be treated briefly and, in addition, mention will be made of some of the problems encountered in mapping in the area. some of the questions which still remain unanswered, methods of prospecting that have been applied and the future possibilities of the area.For present purposes, the Lynn Lake area will be considered as extending from west of Lynn lake to east of Barrington lake. Thus, more correctly, it should be termed the Lynn Lake-Barrington Lake area. It comprises five 15-minute map-areas, or a total of 800 square miles, in a block 47 miles east-west and 17 miles north-south.Lynn lake itself is about 120 miles north of Sherridon, Manitoba, the closes t rail terminal. The area is part of the Granville Lake sheet which was mapped by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1932, 1933, and 1935, the results being published in Summary Report 1933. Part C, and as Maps 343A and 344A on a scale of four miles to o.ne inch. In 1940, the McVeigh Lake area was mapped by the Geological Survey of Canada on a scale of 1,500 feet to 1 inch and a map was issued in 1945."
