Each and every mining operation from a simple sand-and-gravel pit to the largest integrated mine-mill-concentrator-smelter-refining complex has, as its foundation, a quantity of extractable natural resource the reserves. Without reserves, there is no mine, and any concentrating or extracting plant, no matter how sophisticated, is simply so much scrap metal. And, of course, without resources there are no reserves. It is remarkable, therefore, especially in this age of careful planning, high quality engineering, and state-of-the-art financial analysis, that such a fundamental and vital item is so little understood and the subject- of so much confusion. Time and time again it has been the experience of the author, when called in to a mining operation that has run into trouble in reaching projected production targets, to find that the designed-for tons were not reaching the concentrator/extraction plant, and/or the grade of such tonnage was substantially below the forecast and design grade of the plant. The mill blames the mine for delivering below standard tons and/or grade and the mining engineer blames the geologist for overly-optimistic assessment or incorrect interpretation of the deposit. The geologist blames the mining and metallurgy division for wrongly interpreting his data and conclusions, or simply fouling-up a fine orebody.

Over the past half-century, researchers have commented on the complexities of ion-exchange processes, but have been forced to use gross assumptions to simplify the associated mathematics sufficiently for mathematical models to be of practical use, given the available computational power. This paper reviews the development of increasingly complex models as computational power has increased over the past half-century, from the direct application of Fick's Law in 1947, through to today's models requiring finiteelement methods. The assumptions required for and the associated limitations of the various models are presented and the associated computational complexities are discussed. A case study is presented in which a continuous loss of capacity in an acid resin was observed over about sixty cycles of loading and elution. Resin poisoning does not explain this observation. This paper presents the capacity loss data, speculates on possible causes of the phenomenon, discusses why conventional kinetic and equilibrium mechanisms cannot explain it and concludes that the need to develop a more rigorous model is apparent. The significance of this observation is that standard tests done for a new resin application could significantly overestimate the commercial performance of the resin concerned, highlighting the importance of computer simulation in this field of process engineering.

Abstract- Since the 1957 initiation of deposition of mill tailings at the Heath Steele mine, New Brunswick, periodic detailed studies of the tailings geochemistry and mineralogy have been con­ ducted, thereby providing a unique opportunity to examine the geochernical evolution of a sulfide- rich mine-tailings impoundment. When deposited, the tailings contained about 85 wt% sulfide minerals, 1 wt% to 3 wt% carbonate minerals, and 12 wt% to 14 wt% aluminosilicate minerals. Mineralogical examination of samples of the tailings from deep in the impoundment indicates that little oxidation occurred prior to tailings deposition. The mill process-water deposited with the tailings was neutral to slightly basic and contained low concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn and As. Sampling of the tailings five years after deposition indicated that sulfide-oxidation reactions, occurring near the tailings surface, had decreased the tailings-water pH and increased the concentrations of Fe, SOi-, Cu, Zn and Pb (up to 10 000 mg/L, 25 000 mg/L, 2.5 mg/L, 200 mg/L, and 4.5 mg/L, respectively) . In 1975, ten years after decommissioning, the tailings could be divided into three zones: an upper oxidation zone in which sulfide oxidation is actively occurring, a hardpan layer, 15 cm to 20 cm thick, composed of tailings cemented by secondary Fe minerals, and an underlying reduction zone in which the tailings are relatively tinoxidized (Boorman and Watson, 1976). Chemical analyses indicated the presence of low-pH waters containing very high concentrations of SO42- , Fe, and other metals (up to 63 600 mg/L SO42-, 28 600 mg/L Fe, 10 mg/L Pb, 600 mg/L Cu and 4000 mg/L Zn), suggesting that there was a period of intense sulfide oxidation between five and ten years after tailings deposition. More recent sampling, conducted some 20 years after the end of tailings deposition, indicates that relatively little change has occurred in the last ten years, thereby suggesting that the hardpan layer has provided an impediment to the downward movement of dissolved constituents . Analyses of the tailings solids show increased accumulations of many metals at or near the depth of the hardpan layer. Evaluations of the long-term evolution of the tailings can be enhanced by comparison of descriptions of the tailings with descriptions of the gossan that overlay the massive­ sulfide orebody prior to mining. At Heath Steele, this comparison suggests that many of the mechanisms controlling the distribution of metals in the tailings will probably persist over geologic time.

Following the Paris Agreement adopted in 2015 and the SDGs, reduction of CO2 emissions has been taken up as an issue worldwide, and the steel industry, which has a particularly large emission, is required to significantly reduce it. Most of the CO2 generated in the steel industry is generated from the ironmaking process, due to the use of coke and its raw material coal in the ironmaking process. JFE Steel Corporation has been considering the use of hydrocarbon-based gaseous fuels and liquid fuels as a partial alternative to coke breeze used in the sintering process since 2006, immediately after the Kyoto Protocol came into effect in 2005. In a laboratory study, a pot test was used to investigate the effect of the type of fuel, its amount and its injection method on the heat pattern in sinter bed. As a result, the authors developed a technology, in which a predetermined amount of gas fuel or liquid fuel was injected from the surface of sintering bed to extend the holding time of 1200°C or higher at which liquid phase sintering occurs in the layer, to improve the sinter strength while reducing the amount of coke breeze. The authors succeeded in putting this technology to practical use using hydrocarbon-based gas fuel in 2009 and achieved a maximum annual reduction of 60 000 tons of CO2 per sintering machine. In this report, the authors introduce the results of laboratory studies on the use of various energy sources, the practical application of the technology for injecting hydrocarbon-based gaseous fuel into the sintering machine, and the operational results.

Nuclear explosive fracturing has been suggested as a method to make hard rock amenable to extraction by a modified block-caving method. To evaluate this possibility, conventional and nuclear blasting practices are discussed, underground mining methods for large deposits and their costs are described, and the cost of fracturing ore with a nuclear explosive and subsequent mining by a modified caving system is estimated and compared with both open-stope and block-caving mining costs. While the direct cost of fracturing the ore in hard rock with a nuclear explosive is less than with conventional explosives, additional costs imposed by the use of nuclear explosives may make their use unattractive for deep mining.

A study was undertaken using various methodologies to determine the optimum loading and hauling configuration for different haul routes at Callide Mine, a coal mine located in central Queensland. The study involved development of an effective flat haul model that was used to estimate production rates in truck and shovel circuits that employ two excavators of differing capacities then Queuing Theory to construct a capacity constraint model for scheduling purposes to assist in truck allocation and finally a cost model to determine the most cost effective fleet configuration.The model was calibrated using haul road design and performance data of trucks and excavators currently in use at the mine. The study examined the effects of cycle time for different truck and excavator fleet configurations on production rate and costs.The study found haulage cost was directly related to cycle time while production rate reduced with cycle time. The study indicates the approach taken in combining a cost model with a capacity constraint model offers a simple and effective method of scheduling an optimum number of trucks in a haulage circuit.CITATION:Campbell, S and Hagan, P, 2012. Some project managers accept unsatisfactory economic evaluation modelling because they are unaware of what constitutes good practice. They tend to leave it to the evaluation specialist or others to decide. The AusIMM has published on its website a draft set of guidelines for technical economic evaluation which will allow these project managers to take control and demand worldÆs best practices.The style of the guidelines is described and the source of a worked spreadsheet example in Excel is given.Economic evaluation in project management is described. A simple test for the acceptance or rejection of evaluation work is offered. The nature of modelling and evaluation in each of the three study phases of concept, prefeasibility and final feasibility are described. Suggestions on the selection of specialists for each phase are given. The three levels of evaluation thinking are described, namely, modelling, valuation and evaluation. Finally the meaning of æfinancial analysisÆ is explained.The conclusion is that æthe role of an economic evaluation specialist is to create models and evaluations for the whole project team to readily understand and use: it is not to create models for his/her own useÆ.CITATION:Card, P, 2012. WALLACE MCKEEHAN, Douglas, Ariz. (communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must be secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

Many modern industries rely on rare earth elements (REEs) to produce products that are essential to both civil and defense applications. In a prior study (Vass et al., 2019), the authors showed that REE grades in acid mine drainage (AMD) and associated byproduct precipitates from AMD treatment (AMDp) warrant evaluation as a feedstock for REE production. The current work extends that effort through a broad survey of 141 AMD treatment sites in Northern and Central Appalachia. In this study, 185 raw AMD and 623 AMDp field samples were obtained and analyzed to assess the REE and major metal concentrations. Results show that an average of 282 μg/L and 724 g/tonne of REEs occur in AMD and AMDp respectively. Additionally, both basins contained similar distributions of REEs, and these distributions tended to favor heavy and critical REEs when compared with traditional REE ore deposits. Geospatial analysis identified a total resource of 340 tonnes stored at the 141 sites sampled in this study. While this analysis did not quantify the basin-wide REE inventory, it does indicate the impact that processing cut-off grades will have on the overall AMDp resource base.

"Abstract When addressing the performance of deep foundations, many parameters play a role, from adequate soil investigation to performance monitoring and testing. The correct understanding of pile construction, though, remains crucial. After a long period of empirical design and regulations, the last decades have been the ones of theoretical considerations and extensive codes writing. The interaction between technology and design, however, still plays a determinant role. The introduction of hydraulics and the exponential increase in available power on one hand, the miniaturization and the introduction of electronics in control and monitoring systems on the other hand have exerted a major influence on new foundation systems or the evolution and control of existing systems. It appears important to try to take execution related parameters and their control during execution more deeply into account when assessing the final result of the deep foundations and the achieved level of safety and reliability. In this contribution, we will try to analyze how systems, equipment and pile production monitoring and testing can influence the pile performance, and if/how this influence could/should be translated in adapted safety or installation factors. This analysis will run through different categories of piles: driven, augercast and displacement auger piles and bored piles. INTRODUCTIONThe global performance of a deep foundation depends on different aspects (Poulos, 2003):1. Ground investigation2. Design and analysis3. Construction4. Testing5. Performance monitoring6. Remediation and performance enhancementThis paper intends to address the importance of pile construction and the control of it on the final performance of the pile-group of piles. There has been an increasing interest for theoretical analysis over the last 20 years, followed by an increasing impact of regulation and codes. Without denying the importance of the latter, the author wants to point out how installation procedure and project specific parameters can largely influence the reliability of the deep foundation. In this context, detailed and prescriptive standards can miss their objective of intended improvement of accuracy and reliability, but even worse they can adversely impact engineering judgment. In today’s construction world, it is possible to gather installation information which can be of outmost importance for the final deep foundations performance. Therefore, the increase or decrease of installation reliability through adequate pile testing and performance monitoring should be emphasized and should be taken into account in the codes. This is the case already in most advanced codes, but in a limited and insufficiently refined way. After reviewing how codes deal with this issue today, we will show some recent examples of unexpected results due to pile installation. We will try to put these examples into a broader perspective by highlighting some reference and/or recent literature considerations. Finally we will try to summarize how pile testing and installation documentation can increase reliability and attempt to open the debate on how codes could/should allow for more engineering judgment."

At the 1976 Annual Meeting of AIDE, Alan Merson reminded his audience that economic' success comes to those who understand things as they are, rather than as they have been or what ideology says they should be (1). He went on to say that, measured by this standard, the mining industry is in trouble. The mining firms had recognized long ago the importance of effective lobbying in Washington and the state capitals. But, he pointed out, those methods are nearly worthless anymore in coping with many land use problems because the critical decisions are likely to be made at the local level. There the tactics are far different as are the relations of the decisionmakers to the parties before then. Furthermore, in his estimation the trend is to leave land use regulation largely to the local level of government. All who are concerned for access to land for mineral development will be benefited by reading Professor Merson's paper lie is speaking effectively about the context of decisionmaking for specific cases, the shape of things in the here and now. There is, however, a longer-tern set of considerations that if pursued will be likely to foster the creation of public support for mining developments. At that sane meeting I spoke on two foundations of the long-term relationships: namely, the growth in requirements for minerals implied by projections of increasing consumption; and a rationale for fostering mineral exploration and development. I mentioned in passing the social decisionmaking process for public uses of land (2). This paper is intended as a complement. The growth of requirements for Minerals and the rationale for development based on the Entropy Law will be only mentioned. The main concern will be on the process of social decisionmaking in the context of access to land for mineral development.

The innovative methodology developed by the author allows the elaboration of an Angle Roll Pass Design based on the practical observations of the rolling process and applies mathematical criteria, using the Ekelund´s formula supported by Advanced Excel tools (Reach Goal, PROCV-PROCH, Macros) and AutoCad. The first step is the definition of the number of stands, roll dimensions, gear boxes reduction, initial stock, average reductions, spread factors, finishing speed and type of grooves. For each pass are calculated: bite angle, spread, section reduction, lost and gain of temperature, separating force, speed, torque and motor power. After these calculations and checking of the parameters, the program calculates the dimensions of the passes transforming the flat passes into shaped ones. With these dimensions it is possible to draw the grooves using AutoCad and check section reductions. This methodology was already used for the development of a new project and also to check the parameters of existing ones, with comparison of the results and has shown to be reliable in real and tested projects. It is an innovative process that is not available in known literature.

The following notes have been compiled more for the reason that the district is little known to the outside world for its gold production, than for the hope of giving valuable information. The district of Canutillo lies about 15 miles south of the city of Freirina (1at. 28' 50' S. long. 70" 75' W.), and contains nine principal veins, all within a radius of a mile; 50 or more claims have been located on these veins, and this paper refers chiefly to those belonging to the Anglo-Chilean Exploration Go., Ltd., on which the greater part of the development work has been done. In all probability the mines were first worked by the Incas, who, under Tupac Yupangui, captured the country as far south as the Mauli river, between the years 1430 and 1470, and imposed a yearly tribut,e of gold and copper, which was forwarded by carriers on foot to Cuzco, the Inca capital in Peru. In the year 1535, soon after the time of the Spanish conquest, the stories of these consignments, together with those of supposed precious stones, led Diego de Almargro with a band of 400 soldiers to explore as far south as the Incas had gone, in the hope of finding the source of the precious metal, which he believed to have come from some definite point instead of being, as was afterwards proved, the collection of innumerable districts scattered over the entire length of the country. The method of winning the gold used by the Incas or by the natives whom they forced to work seems to have consisted in removing the ore by hard-wood wedges driven by stone-hammers, while a human shoulder-blade worn along its rounded edge, found in one of the mines, had evidently done duty to its second owner as a scraper or shovel. "This chapter outlines the organization of mine/ mill complexes in Canadian mining companies. Many factors unique to the Canadian mining industry will affect the design of the organization in the future: geographic location, the size and the type of orebody, etc. Mining companies cannot choose where new operations will be located, that is dictated by the location of the orebody. New mines are seldom started near established communities. Rather, the towns usually grow up near the mines. The remoteness of most Canadian mining operations has caused severe problems in attracting and/ or retaining all levels of employees. This means that training has a high priority within each operation.Another factor affecting mine/ mill organizations is the size of the operation. Larger operations generally require more departments and increased specialization to manage equipment and manpower effectively. Thus, for mine/mill complexes, organizational charts are less standardized than in other industries. It is often necessary to organize around the work force rather than develop a chart and then acquire the trained personnel to fill the diagrammed positions.The information presented in this chapter has been derived from the responses received from a survey of Canadian mining operations.Principles of OrganizationOrganization can be defined as deployment of personnel to accomplish definite goals. In the mining industry, the major goals are typically the projected number of tons and grade of ore mined on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Organizing involves establishment of authority relationships with provisions for both vertical and horizontal co-ordination within the company structure. Vertical co-ordination is the delegation of responsibility and communication of goals and reporting of progress between the supervisor and subordinate. Horizontal co-ordination is communication between departments at positions of equal authority to determine methods of achieving predefined goals. The organization structure must reflect the objectives and plans of the company, and must clearly define areas of authority.Two criteria for effective organization are departmentalization and manpower planning."

WESTERN phosphate resources which lie in Ida- ho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming, have seen great expansion of activity in recent years. Growth has been two-pronged: expansion in fertilizer use, and since 1949, into the elemental phosphorous industry. Elemental phosphorous, produced in the electric furnace, goes largely into chemical making. Phosphate ore was first recognized in the West about 1889. Production started in 1906, and for many years consisted of underground operations by small companies operating sporadically. In 1920 Anaconda Copper Mining Co. opened the underground Conda mine near Soda Springs in southeastern Idaho, and has maintained and increased its operations since then. About 1930 Montana Phosphate Products Co. began underground mining in Montana and has remained a steady producer. In 1945 San Francisco Chemical Co., one of the oldest companies in the western field, initiated strip mining at the Waterloo mine near Montpelier, Idaho, and later at Leefe mine near Sage Junction, Wyo. In1946 J. R. Simplot Co. began open pit mining at Gay mine near Fort Hall, Idaho. In 1950 Victor Chemical Works began underground development work in the area of Maiden Rock, south of Butte, Mont.: and has since mined there. Monsanto Chemical Co. began open pit mining near Soda Springs, Idaho, in 1951.

In the early winter of 1919 the Pittsburgh petroleum laboratory of the Bureau of Mines undertook the work of testing fuel oil samples representing purchases of the United State Shipping Board for ships sailing from the port of New York. fuel oil was, at this time, being bought on a contract which involved specifications issued by the United States Navy under dace of October 2, 1920 (See Bulletin 1, Oil Division, U. S. Fuel Administration.)The object of the Bureau of Mines in undertaking this inspection work was twofold. (1) The Bureau was in position to give, and the Shipping Board needed, reliable laboratory service for checking the quality of the fuel oil purchased, the value of which ran into millions of dollars for,year's supply. (2) It was believed, and later demonstrated, that the existing specifications did not insure the obtaining of a reliably satisfactory quality of oil.The objection to the specifications concerned the employment of a clause limiting the gravity of the oil. The inadequacy of gravity specifications for several types of petroleum products has long been recognized, and there was every reason to reason to believe that they were no more desirable for fuel oil than for gasoline, kerosene, or lubricating oil. A first and obvious objection was the fact that it is somewhat difficult to make accurate gravity tests on ""heavy"" residuum fuel oils. (The Bureau found it necessary to employ or such tests a rather tedious procedure involving the use of a picnometer and an accurate balance, as the simpler methods, employing hydrometer or displacement balance, proved unreliable in a large proportion of cases.) A second and more important objection was that gravity tests, even when accurately made, do not provide a reliable index of the actual quality of the oil.

While computer assisted engineering, design, and planning have been accepted as tools for specific technical and engineering jobs within the industry, integrating mine-wide monitoring and control systems into mining operations has been slow. This paper reviews the state of the art of mine monitoring and control systems and provides insights into future trends and developments.

The thermodynamics and kinetics of the reactions involved in fuming zinc from oxide slags using coal or coke were first studied in 1955 and have been the subject of many investigations since that time. The key reaction is ZnO(in slag) + CO Zn(g) + COl. This paper will review the some of the recent work, and will add new insights obtained in experiments carried out by the authors. In the first series of experiments it was shown that the reaction 2Fe2+ + ZnO = 2Fe3+ + Zn(g) or 2FeO + ZnO = Fe2O3 + Zn(g) does not occur at an appreciable rate, as is expected from thermodynamic considerations. In the second series of experiments it was shown that zinc does not fume from the slag at a significant rate unless a reductant has been added. This again is in accord with thermodynamic considerations, but is in contradiction to some of the experimental results reported in the literature. A third series of experiments was carried out with excess coke being present, so that the rate of supply of reductant was not in any way controlling the rate. The kinetics of zinc oxide reaction were then found to be independent of the zinc oxide concentration, but increased with increasing basicity, and temperature. The presence of high concentrations of FeO in the slag also improves the kinetics. At low zinc oxide concentrations iron oxide reduction occurred in parallel with zinc oxide reduction. We propose that (under the conditions of this work) the kinetics were controlled by a chemical step, namely the rate of desorption of an adsorbed CO2 species. This is the same mechanism as reported by Belton and co-workers for the kinetics of the reduction of FeO. This explains why the reduction of metal oxides in slags by hydrogen is often faster than by CO.

ABOUT three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. ? This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some com-ments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. Introduction Inco is the major North American nickel producer. Initially based in Sudbury, Ontario, its past exploration activity was directed toward finding new nickel deposits. New nickel sulfide discoveries outside Sudbury have included Thompson, Manitoba; Shebandowan, Ontario; and Widgiemooltha in Western Australia as well as a host of nickel laterite deposits. The company is currently diversifying into other commodities, including gold. Inco's exploration department participated in uranium discoveries in Saskatchewan and chromite discoveries at Tiebaghi in New Caledonia. In addition, it found new gold deposits at Lupin, Northwest Territories; Crixas, Brazil; Hoyle Township, Ontario; and Casa Berardi in Quebec. Crixas and Casa Berardi are currently being evaluated by underground exploration. Figure 1 shows some Canadian Shield gold locations where Inco is or was an active participant. Base metal developments Base metal exploration in shield areas has been greatly eased by applying scientific studies. Archean nickel sulfide deposits have been found using komatiitic-flow models (Fardon, 1971). Volcanogenic massive sulfide model has been applied to copper-zinc deposits (Sangster and Scott, 1976). Such deposits were subsequently seen developing on the sea floor through black smokers (Spiess, MacDonald, and Atwater, 1980). Sedimentary processes were recognized early as important in ore formation, particularly in the southern hemisphere (King, 1976). And many ore deposits are now regarded as a simple part of the geological column (Stanton, 1960 and 1972). Petrographic work on alteration patterns in and around ore bodies was used to develop standard porphyry copper models (Lowell and Guilbert, 1970). Epithermal models for precious metals followed. Stratigraphic zonation patterns have been formulated for base metal deposits, including keel facies, ore facies, and cap or distal facies. Gold developments The work on base metal deposits naturally spilled over into precious metal exploration when the gold price was allowed to float on world money markets. Early work on elements associated with gold deposits, especially arsenic, tellurium, selenium, and mercury, pioneered more detailed geochemical work (Bagby and Berger, 1985; and Groves, Ho, and Houstoun, 1984). Geochemical patterns have been recognized around microfine gold deposits. And the study of gold precipitation patterns in modern geothermal systems has helped understand gold deposition. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was noticed that numerous Archean banded iron formations contained anomalous gold values. From this and other observations, the syngenetic exhalite gold model has developed. Gold deposits also occur along shears in some plutons such as the Belmoral mine in Quebec. This indicates the importance of epigenetic processes in ore formation. Shield ore settings Initial studies recognized that the major gold camps in the Canadian Shield were mostly in greenstone belts and found along "breaks," especially zones of faulting and sedimentation. Gill (1948) wrote, "Only recently, as a result of detailed mapping, has the importance of major schist zones such as the Larder Lake, Cadillac, Porcupine Creek, and Destor Breaks been recognized. These zones of persistent adjustment mark broad belts favorable for ore occurrence." The importance of shearing in ore location and regional greenstone stratigraphic position close to late sedimentary packages was clearly understood. And structural models have been further developed for some Canadian ore deposits (Hubert, Trudel, and Gelinas, 1984). In the Beardmore-Geraldton camp of northwest Ontario, the importance was soon recognized of fold noses in banded iron formation, as localizers for gold ore. This importance had also been recognized in Western Australia,
